“Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat,” the band wrote on Saturday

Sam Rivers, the founding bassist for Limp Bizkit, died on Saturday. He was 48. The band confirmed the news on social media.

“Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat,” Limp Bizkit wrote on Instagram, sharing a photo of Rivers. “Sam Rivers wasn’t just our bass player — he was pure magic. The pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.”

Rivers and Fred Durst met while in Jacksonville, Florida and first played together in the short-lived Malachi Sage. In 1994 after that band fizzled, they teamed up with Rivers’ cousin and drummer John Otto to form Limp Bizkit. Shortly afterward, guitarist Wes Borland joined them, rounding out the original lineup that expanded to include DJ Lethal.

“From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced,” the band continued in its statement on Saturday. “His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous.

“We shared so many moments — wild ones, quiet ones, beautiful ones — and every one of them meant more because Sam was there.”

“He was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of human. A true legend of legends. And his spirit will live forever in every groove, every stage, every memory,” the band wrote. “We love you, Sam. We’ll carry you with us, always. Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends.”

This is a developing story…

Sam Fender has won the 2025 Mercury Prize.

Sam Fender has won the Mercury Prize

The 31-year-old musician has received the £25,000 prize for the best British or Irish album of the year for People Watching, and Sam subsequently admitted to feeling surprised by his own success.

Sam – who was visibly shocked when his name was announced to the audience – told the BBC: “I didn’t think that was going to happen at all. I’ve spent the last 10 minutes crying.”

Sam received a rapturous ovation from his hometown crowd at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle.

The singer – who also received a nomination for his second record, Seventeen Going Under, back in 2022 – actually dedicated his accolade to Annie Orwin, his former mentor.

Sam – who earlier performed the title track of his award-winning album – said: “I was honoured and lucky enough to be with her in the last week of her life, and the title track was about her and about grief.

“Then the rest of the album is very much local stories, little pictures of Shields, and the people I’ve grown up with.

“So, very much like every other album I’ve done, but I think we got it right this time.”

This year’s awards ceremony was moved from London to Newcastle in an effort to make the music industry feel more inclusive, and less London-centric.

Jo Twist, the chief executive of the BPI, which organises the awards show, said: “Talent is everywhere but opportunity isn’t.

“So it’s only right that we bring these large scale shows (outside London) to show there are opportunities within the music industry without having to move city.”

Sam felt particularly thrilled to receive the award in his home city, observing that Newcastle has “always been in an isolated bubble” from the rest of the UK music industry.

The singer – who overcame competition from the likes of Pulp and Wolf Alice to win the award – added: “So for it to be recognised is really important. Hopefully it can be the beginning of many other wonderful things.”

Jacob Anderson & Sam Reid on Louis & Lestat Commodifying Vampirism in Season 3 (Exclusive)

by jummy84 October 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Everyone’s heard about rock star Lestat (Sam Reid) in The Vampire Lestat, the third season of Interview With the Vampire. The bigger mystery is what the new Louis (Jacob Anderson) will be like as the AMC series continues to give him a new story that’s not found in Anne Rice‘s books.

While Louis is still a “vampire capitalist” in the present day, as executive producer and writer Hannah Moscovitch describes, it’s the fact that he’s commodifying vampirism that’s noteworthy. In the video interview above, filmed in TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine’s New York Comic Con 2025 studio, Anderson, Reid, and Moscovitch tell viewers what to expect from Louis and Lestat’s wildly new lives now that the human world knows that vampires exist.

“He knows what he’s good at now,” Anderson says, adding that Louis learned in Season 2 that he’s “not an artist,” but he understands art and knows “how to maximize it and make something out of it and build.”

“There was a point in the writing room where we were talking about Louis selling vampire souvenirs,” Moscovitch reveals. “It’s not quite that in the show.”

“But it’s not a million miles away from that,” Anderson notes.

Reid grimaces at the thought of vampire souvenirs. “I hear souvenirs, I think of Claudia,” he says.

Lestat’s going to be thinking about Claudia (Delainey Hayles) a lot in Season 3. He’s emotionally haunted by her death from Season 2, and the memories of everyone he’s ever loved are occupying his every thought, whether he wants them to or not.

Louis and Armand’s (Assad Zaman) depictions of Lestat in the first two seasons highlight his performative nature, a trait that remains true about this troubled vampire, no matter how his exes paint him. His rock-star persona is equally performative (and its own form of vampire commodification), but his artistic process now pushes him to be more “revealing,” according to Reid.

“He’s searching for perfectionism,” Reid explains of Lestat’s music, but “he manages to express everything and nothing through his art.”

“He’s like a really sincere troll,” Anderson teases.

The actor, who’s a successful musician himself (he writes music and performs under the name Raleigh Ritchie), is sincere in his praise of Reid’s musical performances during filming. Reid struggles to accept the compliments, but Anderson and Moscovitch insist on giving them.

“Sam’s being modest, but it’s really special and I’ve not really seen anything like it,” Anderson shares. “People are involuntarily clapping at the end of takes.”

“The crew [cries] often over the beauty of the music,” Moscovitch adds of Daniel Hart’s songs he’s written for Lestat’s band.

Alessandro Nivola didn’t want his son Sam Nivola to take up acting

by jummy84 October 12, 2025
written by jummy84

11 October 2025

Alessandro Nivola “tried to talk” his son Sam Nivola out of pursuing an acting career.

Alessandro Nivola was unconvinced about son Sam Nivola following his parents into acting

The Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale star has admitted that he wasn’t best pleased when Sam, 22, told him that he was dropping out of Columbia University to try his luck in the acting profession.

Alessandro, who has Sam with his wife Emily Mortimer, told People: “I didn’t want him to leave. I tried to talk him out of it and he would have none of it.

“And I think it was really the moment that I just threw up my hands and said, ‘Sam, you know, I just want you to be happy’, that we really started to get along.”

Alessandro has recalled how Sam – who starred in the third season of The White Lotus – dropping out of college was the moment he “really announced” to his parents that he was serious about acting.

The 53-year-old star said: “Since then, it’s just been great, and I’ve watched him go from strength to strength.

“And you know if there’s one thing that I think he’s really benefitted from growing up with two actors… it’s just having spent so much time on sets and watching us do stuff like this.

“So, when it sort of started to come to him, it wasn’t a novel experience. He’d at least had a glimpse of it as a very young guy.”

Alessandro previously suggested that he and his pal Ethan Hawke were planning to make movie that would star both of their sons as younger versions of themselves.

The Brutalist star said: “Ethan Hawke and I have been cooking up this movie called Satan Is Real about a pair of brothers called the Louvin Brothers.

“And then we were thinking that now that Sam and (Ethan’s son), Levon Hawke, are becoming stars, that the best way for us to green light the movie will be to write in a section that has us as younger versions.”

Meanwhile, Sam previously revealed that he was glad not to have relied on parents to get acting jobs.

Asked about being a “nepo baby”, he told Variety: “Other than my genes, I don’t think I can attribute much of my success to my parents. I feel proud that I’ve done it for myself, and sometimes in spite of them.

“[With my first role] I didn’t get my dad’s agent to call up so-and-so. I did it by myself. I didn’t want to give anyone an excuse to be able to say that anything I’ve achieved has been because of anyone other than me. And I’m proud of that.”

Watch Sam Smith Perform ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’ ‘To Be Free’ on ‘Colbert’

by jummy84 October 2, 2025
written by jummy84

The musician will kick off their To Be Free residency at New York City’s Warsaw this month

Sam Smith appeared on The Late Show to showcase two songs, a cover Bill Withers 1971 classic, “Ain’t No Sunshine” and their own single “To Be Free.” Smith performed his rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine” with the help of two guitarists, giving the iconic song a stripped down approach.

For the emotional “To Be Free,” which Smith dropped over the summer, Smith was joined by a sole musician on stage and illuminated from behind. A chorus of backup singers then brought in their voices to accompany them.

Smith released “To Be Free” in July after temporarily shelving the song, written during the making of their fourth studio album, Gloria. Smith didn’t believe it was a fit for the record, but wanted to share it with fans later. It features TwoCity Chorus, a 22-piece choir helmed by Ant Clemons and Brandon Pain.

“It was created during a time in my life where I became free within myself,” Smith said in a statement. “I’ve never had a recording experience like I did making this song. It’s one vocal and guitar take from start to finish—one live performance of me and my friend Simon Aldred in a pure state of music and expression.”

The music video for “To Be Free” was filmed at Warsaw, one of Brooklyn’s oldest venues. In October, Smith will spend 12 nights performing in the same space for the To Be Free: New York City residency. The run of live shows kicks off on Oct. 8 and extends through Oct. 31. Smith will then take the residency to the Castro Theatre in San Francisco for a run of eight shows next February.

Sam Smith to Reopen San Francisco’s Castro Theatre With 2025 Residency

The historic Castro Theatre in San Francisco is reopening next year — and they got a queer music icon to do the honors of inaugurating it. On Tuesday, Sam Smith announced that they will bring their To Be Free concert residency to San Francisco for a run of eight shows next February.

“I love San Francisco, and The Castro, especially, has been so central to the Queer community here over the years,” Smith said in a press release. “These shows will also celebrate the official reopening, so it’s truly an honor to become part of this iconic venue’s history.”

Smith is scheduled to perform at the Castro Theatre on Feb. 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18, 20, and 21.

The Castro, which first opened in 1922 as a movie palace, temporarily closed its doors in early 2024 to undergo extensive renovations. These renovations included restorations to its iconic neon sign, the installation of new chandeliers, a new cooling and heating system, additional restrooms, and improvements to ADA accessibility for patrons.

To celebrate the announcement of the new shows — with tickets on sale Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. PT — Smith also released a cover of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

The video features Smith walking through the Castro Theatre mid-renovation, strolling the streets of San Francisco’s historic queer district, and finally standing among queer fans outside the lit-up theatre, where Smith collects tickets at the entrance.

Smith is currently hosting their New York City residency for “To Be Free” at the Warsaw. They have shows scheduled for 12 dates in October, six in November, and six more in December. The residency runs — now set for NY and SF — celebrate Smith’s single of the same name, “To Be Free.”

“I’ve never had a recording experience like I did making this song. It’s one vocal-and-guitar take from start to finish — one live performance of me and my friend Simon [Aldred] in a pure state of music and expression,” they said of the song. “I wrote it five years ago while writing my last album, Gloria, and then parked it because I knew it was not a song for that album. It was created during a time in my life where I became free within myself.”

Sam Prekop Stays Modular On New Synth LP

Sam Prekop Stays Modular On New Synth LP

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Sam Prekop may be most familiar to astute listeners as the frontman of eclectic Chicago band the Sea & Cake, but he’s also built a robust catalog of modular synth-driven projects as a solo artist and in collaboration with Sea & Cake drummer John McEntire. The focus remains electronic on Open Close, due Friday (Sept. 26) from Thrill Jockey, many songs from which were written for recent live performances with ambient legend Laraaji.

“I felt it was a good idea to get this stuff recorded, because a lot of work had gone into it for it to just dissipate,” Prekop tells SPIN of Open Close, which revels in layered grooves and ever-morphing soundscapes. “The basic arc and flow of the record is there from the live set, but I added quite a bit as well that I couldn’t pull off live.” One example is the heavily overdubbed middle section of “Light Shadow,” while “Para” and “Opera” were written later “in response to what I felt was missing from the record.”

“The main sequence/body of ‘Light Shadow’ is very minimal — for sure not more than two chords. I find sequences that work like this fascinating in that for me, I just don’t get tired of listening to them, which I take as a good sign,” Prekop says by way of explaining what he loves so much about working with modular synths. “It has taken me a while to realize that a certain ‘musical’ complexity is not always the most interesting route to take. The sequence felt so malleable and seemed to work effortlessly with whatever I tried to layer above and around it.”

Prekop was initially drawn to the instruments during a period of frustration at his “somewhat limited guitar-playing abilities. Messing around with modular synths just opened a whole new approach and sound world for me. It did, however, take years to figure out how to make interesting music with this stuff, and, no surprise, it’s just as challenging as playing a guitar.”

Moving the music into a live setting has been part of that challenge, and Prekop admits he “wasn’t really that familiar with Laraaji’s work” beyond the beloved, Brian Eno-produced 1980 album Ambient 3: Day of Radiance before they teamed up. “I went into it having no idea if it would work or not,” he says. “I spoke with Laraaji before the first show to strategize a bit and basically pick a key to play in. The first time we played together was at soundcheck before the first show. I think we were both relieved within the first five minutes — we could tell it was going to be fine and I was really quite surprised that what we do works together so well. Our performances also evolved in surprising ways.”

Asked to compare Open Close to his 2020 solo LP Comma or his acclaimed 2022 McEntire collaboration Sons Of, Prekop sees a clear common thread. “Open Close is related to the Sons Of record with regard to process, as it was also developed from ‘live’ recordings, but John and I added a lot to it in the studio,” he says. “The long forms of the pieces are related as well. How they unfold over quite a bit of time, which references back to what happens live, is something I’ve been interested in taking on as a challenge for a few years now. Playing modular shows with John for some years now has been great and it was super exciting to make a record together, which is something we had thought about since the beginning. Comma is more a traditional collection of ‘songs’ and in a way felt like a departure and a bit more ‘pop’ than my previous synth records. I think a big differentiation is I felt I could have sang on many of the pieces on Comma. Maybe on the next one.”

Prekop will celebrate Open Close with a concert tonight at New York’s Public Records, and says “there are plans to do something with the recordings” made during the prior Laraaji concerts. As for fans of the Sea & Cake, which hasn’t released an album since 2018 and has only played live on a handful of occasions since then, future activity will likely hinge on the availability of McEntire and bassist Doug McCombs, who are both founding members of fellow Chicago experimentalists Tortoise. That group’s first album in nine years, Touch, is due Oct. 24 from International Anthem.

“I do really miss playing in a ‘rock band’ and I have been thinking about singing more these days as well,” Prekop concedes. “It’s looking like John and Doug will be pretty busy with Tortoise for a while, but I do need time to come up with new songs, so the timing might be just right. I’m sure at some point we’ll be getting something happening again.”

“‘It’s not over.’ Some sort of code…” Prime Video has revealed the official trailer for a thriller series titled Lazarus, arriving to watch starting in October this fall. Based on an original story idea and written by the New York Times best-selling author Harlan Coben and BAFTA-winner Danny Brocklehurst. Lazarus follows a man who returns home after his father’s suicide and begins to have disturbing experiences that can’t be explained. It’s not based on any of Harlan Coben’s books, it’s something he came up with just for this new series. “Like father, like son.” A forensic psychologist investigates cold case murders after returning to his family home following the death of his father – likely discovering there’s a connection between his father’s death and his sister’s murder 25 years ago. Starring Sam Claflin as Young Laz, Bill Nighy as Doctor L, and Alexandra Roach as Jenna Lazarus, with David Fynn, Karla Crome, Kate Ashfield, and Roisin Gallagher as Laura. This looks like it has some clever twists and turns built into it, though it’s yet another new murder mystery series. What are the bigger implications? Who did it? Is his dad now an AI hologram?

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Harlan Coben’s series Lazarus, direct from PV’s YouTube:

Sam Fender becomes first artist to tour with all electric trucks

With his ‘People Watching’ shows this summer, Sam Fender became the first artist to complete a set of live dates with all electric transport.

The final run of the tour, taking the singer-songwriter from Manchester to Edinburgh and Belfast to Stradbally in Ireland, used four fully electric vehicles in partnership with Mercedes-Benz Trucks, covering over 900 miles.

Each night, four eActros 600s carried stage sets and equipment between cities and venues, charging while on the road.

The ‘Rein Me In’ singer commented on the achievement: “We’ve just finished our summer tour where we used some Mercedes-Benz electric trucks with help from KB Event. Hopefully, this will show what can be achieved on future tours, and other artists will jump on board too. Big thanks to everyone involved, and to Massive Attack for pioneering the way with more sustainable touring.”

Richard Burnett of KB Event added: “Transport is a key part of any live music tour, but we wanted to make the ‘People Watching’ tour as green and sustainable as possible. Until now, electric trucks weren’t seen as viable for big tours, but the eActros 600 has shown they can deliver the performance, the range, and the reliability.”

Meanwhile, the Music Venue Trust shared earlier this month that funds raised from his UK tour in late 2024 provided a package of over £100,000 to help support almost 48 independent music venues across England, Scotland and Wales.

Fender is currently playing shows in North America and will head to Australia in November. Find US tickets here and Australia tickets here.

A week ago, ‘People Watching’ – which came out in February – was announced to be on the Mercury Prize 2025 shortlist, alongside albums from the likes of CMAT, Fontaines D.C. and Wolf Alice.

His third album overall, it became his second to receive a Mercury Prize nomination after 2021’s ‘Seventeen Going Under’. There could be new music coming next year, too, with Fender telling the crowd at his huge Wythenshawe Park gig on August 16, “I’m gonna go away at the end of this lot of shows and sort my shit out and get my voice as good as possible and make another album and fuck loads of new tunes next year.”
