Wizards Beyond Waverly Place

The sequel to Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place returns for a second season with back-to-back episodes, featuring a crowded house of young wizards now that protégée Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) has been joined in the magic trade by Russo brothers Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). While Justin (David Henrie) helps train the young wizards for the Family Wizard Competition, expect guest-star appearances by Selena Gomez (reprising her role as Justin’s sister Alex), What We Do in the Shadows alum Harvey Guillén as Gossip Stone and Criminal Minds‘ Kirsten Vangsness as Bigelow McFigglehorn, a member of the Wizard Tribunal. Kenzi Richardson in 'Vampirina: Teenage Vampire' Season 1 Episode 1

Disney / Mitch Haaseth

Vampirina: Teenage Vampire

The supernatural fun continues on a music-heavy comedy series starring Kenzi Richardson as Vampirina — or as her friends call her, “Vee” — a tween vampire from Transylvania who’s left the crypt to sink her teeth into a performing-arts boarding school. As one does. Living Single‘s Kim Coles costars as the Wilson Hall Academy of the Arts’ Dean Merriweather, with Jiwon Lee as Vee’s perky roommate Sophie and Milo Maharlika as Demi, a 600-year-old ghost sent by Vee’s parents to keep a spectral eye on Vee. The entire season will begin streaming on Disney+ on October 15, with the first single (“Slay”) available today.

Naika Toussaint as Amber, Miranda Cosgrove as Dawn, Madeleine Arthur as Cinderella, Madison Pettis as Lexi, Hannah Stocking as Eve and Pierson Fodé as Trey in 'The Wrong Paris'

Diyah Pera / Netflix

The Wrong Paris

What would Emily Cooper (of Emily in Paris) do? Have a meltdown, most likely. Which is country girl Dawn’s (Miranda Cosgrove of iCarly fame) initial reaction when she signs on as a contestant for the Honey Pot dating show, set in Paris, where she hopes to pursue her art-school dreams. But reality (as in reality TV) sets in when she discovers the show is actually set in Paris, Texas. This being a romcom, you won’t be surprised to learn that the cowboy bootcamp has an upside: the bachelor himself, a hunky hayseed named Trey (Pierson Fodé) who takes a shine to Dawn.

The Rainmaker

Novice lawyer Rudy (Milo Callaghan) squares off in court on the opposite side of his girlfriend Sarah (Madison Iseman) for a high-stakes evidentiary hearing in a pivotal episode of the legal drama based on John Grisham’s bestseller. Sarah and her new mentor Brad (Wade Briggs) know their jobs at Tinley Britt are on the line, while Rudy keeps trying to prove himself to his boss Bruiser (Lana Parrilla), though he has a risky habit of ignoring all of her advice and warnings. Adding to the anxiety: the results of the bar exam are beginning to come in.

Described by the New York Times as “a tough, relentless movie about life and death in battle,” writer-director Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s unflinching 2025 real-time war film set during an ill-fated Iraq War mission makes its streaming debut. (The movie premieres on HBO Saturday at 8/7c.) The ensemble cast includes Reservation Dogs‘ D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Shogun‘s Cosmo Jarvis, Heartstopper‘s Kit Connor, Will Poulter (The Bear), Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), and Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before).

'Chief of War' Season 1 Episode 8

Apple TV+

Chief of War

War clouds are forming on several fronts in the penultimate episode of Jason Momoa‘s historical epic set in the pre-unification Hawaiian Islands of the early 1800s. Grieving the slaughter on the beach of hundreds of innocent villagers by European invaders, Ka’iana (Momoa) is losing faith in war chief and future king Kamehameha’s (Kaina Makua) resolve. And there’s another enemy within, with the battle-hungry Keoua (Cliff Curtis) on the rampage.

Elizabeth Olsen in Afterlife Rom-Com

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

I told myself that I wouldn’t say that “Eternity” is too long, but isn’t it always? If not the premise, that is at least the guiding principle behind David Freyne’s sincere, somewhat amusing, and sweetly overextended rom-com, which splits the difference between “After Life” and “Defending Your Life” with its story of a newly deceased woman named Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) being forced to choose which of her two husbands — the smoldering Luke who died in the Korean War (Callum Turner), or the absolute Larry she was married to for the 67 years that followed (Miles Teller) — she’d like to join forever in the great beyond.

Each of the fellas has their upsides (Luke is hot, and Larry is comfortable), but committing to either of them until the end of time seems like a pretty bleak proposal. Likewise, none of the gimmicky themed realms that Joan is offered to “live in” — Capitalist World, Studio 54 World, Weimar World, (“Now with 100% less Nazis!”) — feel like the kind of place you’d want to spend more than a few hours, let alone several billion years. “‘Til death do us part” is romantic, practical, and offset by the backdoor insurance policy of divorce. “‘Til the sun explodes, and then maybe even longer after that” is an ungodly prison sentence. Freyne’s hyper-agnostic film may not believe in heaven or hell, but it has some pretty vivid ideas of what the latter could look like.

A more ambitious — and less conservative — movie might have used this premise to dig a bit deeper into the commitments that people make to each other on this mortal coil, but “Eternity” is content to circle the idea that life is beautiful and worth treasuring because it doesn’t last forever. That much is clear from the moment Freyne and Pat Cunnane’s high-concept script (a real Black List special) first drops us into the Hyatt-like Junction where souls process what’s happened and have seven days to pick their final destinations from a variety of convention floor displays. The options range from bleak to bleaker, as everything about the set-up exudes all the romance and splendor of shopping for a time share. It’s enough to make us yearn for the gender reveal party where Larry choked to death on a pretzel; at least that came with the promise of an ending.

'Nuremberg'

But the film’s characters are too caught up in their post-mortem love triangle to realize they’re essentially fighting over what meal Joan should choose to eat every single day of her infinite afterlife: her favorite comfort food, or a rare delicacy she’s been fantasizing about ever since her last taste of it in 1953. Larry is the first dead person we follow into the Junction, and like everyone else his physical form reverts to reflect how it looked when he was at his happiest, which for him was in his mid-30s after he first got married. Cute. The kind of nondescript everyman who loved to complain even though he walked through life without much want or trouble, Larry feels like a guy you’d meet in the buffet line on a cruise ship. He’s as nice as he is nondescript, and the jaded but personable Afterlife Coordinator assigned to his case (Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Anna) can’t wait to meet and forget her next client.

That changes, and how, when Anna realizes that the Junction’s handsome local bartender is Joan’s first love, and that Joan is the reason he took a service job in purgatory rather than choose a permanent vacation in paradise; Luke has been pouring beer and scrubbing glasses for more than half a century in the hopes that he and Joan might be reunited when she dies. Which, conveniently enough, she does just a few moments before Larry is meant to board a train for the godforsaken eternity he’s chosen for himself (Beach World). Suddenly, and to the great delight of both Anna and her fellow AC, Ryan (John Early), there’s some real juicy drama in the Junction. Which man will Joan choose, Captain America or the guy whose farts she’s had to smell for the last six decades? Like a metaphysical riff on Netflix’s “The Ultimatum,” she’ll get a trial run with both of them before having to make up her mind.

“Eternity” does what it can to leverage its heady concept into a heart-stirring tale of love and longing, but the world-building — or lack thereof — invariably gets in the way of the emotion that Freyne is hoping to generate from it. While the movie’s three-sided romance is never quite as artificial as the Junction where so much of it takes place, its angles lose their sharpness over the course of a story that has so much scenery to attend to, and each of its main characters is left to fight an uphill battle against the archetype that threatens to define them.

The cast is game for the challenge (and fun to watch do the “old people in A24-era bodies” thing), even if their best efforts aren’t quite enough to give “Eternity” the emotional undertow it needs to become more than a semi-charming thought exercise. Teller’s upbeat, go-with-the-flow charm makes him easy to accept as a simple guy who just wants — and expects — his afterlife to resemble the one he left on Earth, and the fact that he’s more of a leading man than a characer actor lends an extra zing to the constant jokes about how much hotter Callum Turner is, like any of us could hope to compete with the future Mr. Lipa (someone in the movie compares Luke to Montgomery Clift, and Turner channels that matinee idol energy to a tee).

Olsen, meanwhile, has the most thankless and important role in the story, but her mid-century war bride routine is charming enough to make the whole thing feel effortless, and the interiority she rescues from the script only makes it more convincing that two good-looking men would fight each other to — or is it from? — the death to be with her forever. While Joan flip-flops about her feelings more often than John Kerry on the campaign trail (a painfully outdated reference that’s still a few decades too recent for Larry to use or Luke to understand), her anguish is palpable enough to anchor the movie to something real as it runs between different fantasy worlds. For their part, Early and Randolph both feel held down in a less fortunate way; much as this gifted pair compensates for the comedy that “Eternity” can’t wring out of its leads (and have solid chemistry to boot), you can almost feel them being smothered by the schematic nature of a story that doesn’t have room for them to cut loose.

It’s a story that’s better told by its setting than with its action — one that doesn’t really go anywhere, and still takes the scenic route to get there. In that light, Zazu Myers’ production design probably deserves top billing here. We don’t get to see enough of the Junction to disabuse us of the sense that it’s a glorified Broadway backdrop (complete with painted skylines and cloth scrims to indicate whether it’s day or night), but the well-observed tackiness of its mid-century aesthetic, and the related impression that purgatory didn’t exist until Don Draper invented it as an advertising opportunity, helps underscore the idea that life in any realm is only as tolerable as the people with whom you choose to spend it.

“Eternity,” however doesn’t have any interest in that kind of cynicism, to the point that it forgoes the most logical ending — a shared embrace of the void — for a different kind of forever. In doing so, it somewhat forfeits the film’s prevailing message — that life is beautiful as a result of its brevity and occasional bitterness — in favor of a more digestible morale about the paradises we create for ourselves here on Earth. It’s a fitting compromise for such a pleasantly unobjectionable rom-com; one that’s scared of forever, but takes almost just as long just to end up back where it started.

Grade: C+

“Eternity” premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. A24 will release the film in select theaters on November 14 before expanding on November 26.

Movie Review: In ‘The Baltimorons,’ emergency dental work prompts an unlikely rom-com | Hollywood

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

There are all kinds of movies that are either endangered or practically extinct. The big-studio comedy. The original musical. But the sweet and shaggy regular-people movie — more a province of the 1970s, always one that required a little hunting down — is a particularly rare breed.

Movie Review: In ‘The Baltimorons,’ emergency dental work prompts an unlikely rom-com

“Baltimorons” is one of those little movies you might stumble across and be surprised that it hooks you. It does so despite — or more likely because — of its complete lack of flashiness or any self-evident attempt to “hook you.” Instead, it manages that simply with low-key charm and a warm, unpretentious humanity.

Director Jay Duplass’ film is about a young Baltimore man in recovery for two things. Cliff has quit both drinking and improv comedy. If “yes, and” had been his personal mantra, he’s now, after a failed suicide attempt seen in the movie’s first moments, pledged to give up both for his girlfriend, Brittany .

It doesn’t take us long to grasp that this state of affairs is trying for Cliff, a gregarious and easygoing guy, but an aimless one. The alcohol isn’t so much the problem, though. More difficult is going cold turkey on riffing his way through life.

On Christmas Eve, while Cliff is heading to Brittany’s family home for a holiday celebration, he trips and chips his tooth. With most dentist offices closed, he ends up at the door of Didi . Their interactions are, at first, awkward. Cliff is informal and prying; Didi, many years his senior, is more official. As a partner for Cliff’s eager conversation, Didi, a woman with a defeated, just-getting-through-the-day, middle-aged melancholy, would seem about the least genial match.

But each gets little windows into the other’s life. Didi, divorced, learns her daughter won’t be with her that evening — a phone call overheard by Cliff. And when the dental work is done, Cliff realizes his car has been towed. Didi reluctantly offers a ride, and, from there, the two end up on an unlikely Christmas Eve odyssey together, without the supernatural qualities of Dickens but nevertheless with ghosts from the past along the way, such as Didi’s ex-husband and Cliff’s former improv troupe .

“Rom-com” or “May-December romance” would be reasonable labels to put on Duplass’ film, written by him and Strassner. But part of the freewheeling charm of the film is that it doesn’t try to define the relationship that evolves during its lightly paced night. These are just a couple of people a bit disappointed by life, who find each other at the right time.

Jay Duplass and his brother, Mark Duplass , first made their mark in the early ‘00s with micro-budget comedies like “The Puffy Chair.” “The Baltimorons,” though, doesn’t feel like it’s trying to shake up the movie industry. Like its characters, it’s just trying to get by, and maybe find a little companionship along the way.

“The Baltimorons,” an Independent Film Company release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for language. Running time: 100 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Sweet RomCom ‘French Lover’ Trailer with Omar Sy & Sara Giraudeau

by Alex Billington

“Finally, something cool is happening. Enjoy it, girl.” Netflix has revealed the official trailer for a sweet new romantic comedy movie titled French Lover, arriving for streaming to watch later in September. It hasn’t played at any fests but that doesn’t matter it looks fun anyway. Abel Camara, the biggest star of the moment, crosses paths with girl-next-door Marion. Neither of them suspects this will be the beginning of a great love story. This is a fun twist on the usual romantic comedy concept – here it’s the guy who is the glamorous, out-of-your-league, dreamboat and the girl is the more homebody, regular lady who wins his heart. Why not? Though this is becoming more common, especially within many Netflix movies. Starring Omar Sy & Sara Giraudeau, with Pascale Arbillot, Alban Ivanov, Cindy Bruna, and Agnès Hurstel. When a jaded famous actor randomly encounters a down-on-her-luck waitress in Paris, their unexpected love story begins — but will it survive the glare of the spotlight? It looks very cheesy but charming enough to watch and enjoy.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Lisa-Nina Rives’ film French Lover, direct from YouTube:

French Lover Poster

Abel Camara (Omar Sy) is a star, a sex symbol. A child prodigy, he grew up in front of the cameras. He who seems to have everything—success, money, and the public’s love—is going through a rough patch. Marion (Sara Giraudeau), on the other hand, is far from the glitz and glamour; in the middle of a divorce, she’s juggling odd jobs to get by. When Abel and Marion meet, an emotional roller coaster begins that is far from obvious… French Lover is directed by newcomer French filmmaker Lisa-Nina Rives, making her feature directorial debut after working for many years as a script supervisor previously, including on Omar Sy’s film Two Is a Family (2016). The screenplay is written by Hugo Gélin, Noémie Saglio, Lisa-Nina Rives; based on a format created by Shirli Mushoyef. Produced by Hugo Gélin. Netflix debuts Rives’ French Lover film streaming on Netflix worldwide starting September 26th, 2025 coming soon. Who wants to watch?

Blake Lively To Star In ‘The Survival List’ Rom-Com At Lionsgate

by jummy84 August 21, 2025
written by jummy84

After working with Blake Lively on the Another Simple Favor films, Lionsgate has acquired the Tom Melia spec The Survival List as a starring vehicle for the actress, which she’ll also produce, Deadline has confirmed.

An action rom-com, the film follows Annie, a highbrow reality TV producer who against her wishes, is assigned to a new show hosted by famous survival expert Chopper Lane. However, when a shipwreck strands them on a deserted island, Annie discovers Chopper is a fraud and knows nothing about survival, leaving her in charge of figuring out how to keep them alive. Forced to work together, they begin to discover an unlikely chemistry.

Marc Platt, the Oscar nominee behind the Wicked films and the recent live-action How to Train Your Dragon, is in talks to produce alongside Lively. Scott O’Brien will oversee the project for Lionsgate.

Recently caught up in a legal battle with Justin Baldoni surrounding their hit Sony film It Ends with Us that continues to unfold, Lively has just been seen starring in Amazon MGM & Lionsgate’s Another Simple Favor, where she reteamed with director Paul Feig and co-star Anna Kendrick. The sequel premiered on Prime Video in May after premiering at SXSW.

Set to release sequel Wicked: For Good via Universal in November, after seeing Wicked gross over $756M worldwide, Platt’s other recent global hit How to Train Your Dragon made over $626M in thesters.

Melia is a British writer best known for Rye Lane, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and was nominated for Outstanding British Film at the 2024 BAFTAs, also scoring 16 nominations at the British Independent Film Awards. He’s also written for the Sky drama series Brassic, as well as the Sky comedy Bloods.

Do You Think Thama Is Somehow Connected To Tumbbad?
Bollywood

Is Ayushmann Khurrana’s Horror Rom-Com Connected To Cult Classic Tumbbad?

by jummy84 August 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Does Maddock Films’ Thama Have Any Connection To Tumbbad?(Photo Credit –YouTube/Facebook)

The teaser for Thama is creating waves among the audience. The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe fans are already thrilled and can’t wait to see Thama on the big screens. Following the teaser release, we have been speculating about its possible connection with the cult classic horror mystery film Tumbbad.

Why Is Thama’s Connection With Tumbbad Speculated?

Many believe Tumbbad is one of the best films India has ever produced. The movie got the real buzz after its re-release last September. The film is based on human greed and focuses on ‘Purti ki Devi,’ which means ‘The Goddess of Prosperity.’ Hastar, the film’s main evil, is Purti ki Devi’s son.

When you watch the teaser of Thama, you see a similar depiction of a deity who appears to be like Tumbbad’s Purti Ki Devi. You can pause the trailer around 00:45 to see the portrayal. Now, if you compare it with the poster of Tumbbad, the deity in that movie is very similar. This is why we couldn’t help but assume about the Tumbbad and Thama connection, but there is no truth to it. The observation is only part of a speculative theory.

It’s possible that Thama may follow the path of Tumbbad to show the greed angle or may just take a reference from Purti ki Devi, but there is no chance of a crossover between the two films. Additionally, both movies belong to different universes, making it more unlikely to have a direct connection as such.

When Is Thama Expected To Release In Theaters?

The next installment of Maddock Horror Comedy Universe is set to be released this Diwali. The date is yet to be announced, but Diwali is the occasion that the Maddock is promoting as the release date of the movie. This means that you just have to wait a few more months as Diwali will take place between October 18 and 23, 2025.
