8 Rom-com Films of Varun Dhawan for Your Next Movie Night

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Romantic comedies hold a special place in Bollywood. They promise joy, laughter and a decent dose of heartwarming moments. Arguably, no modern Bollywood actor embodies that spirit better than Varun Dhawan. His easy charisma, infectious comic timing and heart-on-his-sleeve performances has made him the face of 21st-century Hindi rom-coms. From his debut performance in Student of the Year to Badrinath Ki Dulhania and the family-centric warmth of Jug Jugg Jeeyo, the actor’s journey through the genre has been remarkable. He has played the role of the playful college boy to the responsible and grown-up lover.

1. Student of the Year (2012)

Rom-com fans love Rohan Nanda. Every star needs a perfect launchpad and for Varun Dhawan, it came in the form of Karan Johar’s glossy and youth-driven Student of the Year. The confident and stylish rich kid with a vulnerable heart made an unforgettable first impression. The film was a celebration of friendship, rivalry and first love. Varun’s character wore designer outfits and rocked in dance competitions. His chemistry with Alia Bhatt was playful yet sincere and hinted at the strong on-screen partnerships they would later share.

2. Main Tera Hero (2014)

Varun Dhawan

Two years later, Varun turned the volume up with Main Tera Hero. Interestingly, the movie was directed by his father, David Dhawan, the king of 90s slapstick romance. Varun channelled the manic energy of Govinda and Salman Khan with his own youthful twist. As Seenu, the mischievous small-town boy with big-city ambitions, he danced through chaos and confusion involving not one, but two -leading ladies. The co-stars included Ileana D’Cruz and Nargis Fakhri. The film’s humour was deliberately over-the-top and Varun owned every bit of it.

3. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014)

Varun Dhawan

Released in the same year, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania showed an entirely different side of Varun. He wasn’t the loud prankster anymore. Humpty was an endearing Delhi boy hopelessly in love with the strong-willed Kavya (Alia Bhatt). The boy-meets-girl story felt rooted in everyday life.

Varun’s character was relatable. He played a man who was flawed but full of heart. He was willing to stand up to tradition for love. His crackling chemistry with Alia Bhatt gave the film its emotional pulse. Together, they created one of the decade’s most loved screen pairs. The movie proved to be a simple story with warmth and relatability.

4. Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017)

Varun Dhawan

If Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was about fun and heart, Badrinath Ki Dulhania brought in doses of maturity. Varun played the role of Badri. He is a small-town man raised in a patriarchal environment. Varun explored a new kind of romantic hero. He is one who learns and grows through love. Opposite Alia Bhatt’s fiercely independent Vaidehi, Badri’s journey from entitled lover to understanding partner became a reflection of changing gender dynamics in India. What could have been a frothy rom-com instead became a story that teaches empathy and respect.

Varun was able to balance humour and intensity with ease. The film cemented his reputation not just as a bankable rom-com star but as an actor unafraid of evolving. It remains one of the few mainstream Bollywood romances that combine entertainment with social awareness.

5. Dilwale (2015)

Varun Dhawan

While Dilwale is remembered primarily as the reunion of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, Varun Dhawan’s presence added a refreshing youthfulness to the mix. As Veer, the younger brother of SRK’s character, he brought charm, humour and a bright spark of romance opposite Kriti Sanon. The film’s scale was massive! The fast cars, exotic locales and sweeping emotions were larger-than-life. Amidst all, Varun managed to carve out his own space within the ensemble. His track offered a lighter, more playful romantic energy that balanced the film’s dramatic core.

6. Judwaa 2 (2017)

Varun Dhawan

A reboot of his father’s and Salman Khan’s iconic Judwaa, this film brought Varun into full-blown entertainer territory. Playing twins Raja and Prem, one street-smart, one soft-spoken, he delivered a performance brimming with old-school comedy and cheeky romance. Rom-com elements ran throughout the film, with Varun’s interactions with Jacqueliene Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu adding sparkle to the chaos. While critics were divided, audiences loved the nostalgia and the unabashed humour.

7. Jug Jugg Jeeyo (2022)

Varun Dhawan

A decade after his debut, Varun Dhawan’s rom-com persona had matured and Jug Jugg Jeeyo reflected that growth. Here, he played Kuku, a married man facing the complexities of love after the honeymoon phase fades.

Set against the backdrop of family weddings and intergenerational relationships, the film explored how love evolves with time. It was witty yet grounded and funny yet reflective. Varun’s chemistry with Kiara Advani felt fresh. Moreover, his interactions with senior co-stars like Neetu Kapoor and Anil Kapoor were widely praised.

Interestingly, Jug Jugg Jeeyo shows Varun Dhawan in a more grounded and emotionally aware avatar. He still maintains his funny person but he appears more human than ever.

8. Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari (2025)

Varun Dhawan

Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari had generated massive buzz as a return to Varun’s rom-com roots. Directed by Shashank Khaitan, the man behind the Dulhania films, the movie promised to blend classic romance with contemporary flair and it delivered.

For fans, this project feels like a full-circle moment: Varun reuniting with the genre that defined his stardom. In this movie, Varun starred alongside Janhvi Kapoor Rohit Saraf, Sanya Malhotra and Maniesh Paul.

More than a decade into his career, Varun Dhawan stands as one of Bollywood’s most dependable romantic-comedy star. He is a performer who can make audiences laugh, cry and dance all within the same film. His filmography is an example in how to keep a genre vibrant without letting it stagnate.

“Allow yourself to fall in love again… This is your big moment.” Aura Ent. has debuted their official trailer for an indie romantic comedy film titled Under the Stars, the latest from filmmaker Michelle Danner after her other film The Italians last year. Out on VOD this month if anyone wants to visit Italy. “Sometimes the greatest love story will be your very own.” Under the Stars follows a novelist in a passionless relationship who decides to head to Italy. The twist is that Alex Pettyfer plays the lead character, and Andy Garcia is his Italian host, Giacomo. Once he arrives in Italy, he unexpectedly falls for a spirited local girl who challenges everything he knows about love. It looks like there’s also two love stores in here! Starring Toni Collette, Andy Garcia, Alex Pettyfer, Rob Estes, Jessica Serfaty, and Eva De Dominici. A very rustic charm.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Michelle Danner’s film Under the Stars, direct from YouTube:

Hoping to reignite his passion, he travels to Italy for inspiration – only to unexpectedly fall for a spirited local who challenges everything he thought he knew about love and himself. Under the Stars is directed by American acting coach / author / director Michelle Danner, director of the films How to Go Out on a Date in Queens, Hello Herman, The Bandit Hound, Bad Impulse, The Runner, Miranda’s Victim, and The Italians previously. Madison Bailey On Life After Outer Banks & New Rom-Com

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

After playing stubborn, anti-capitalist, one-of-the-boys Kiara “Kie” Carrera for four seasons on Outer Banks, Madison Bailey is entering her rom-com era. In Prime Video’s Maintenance Required, she plays Izzy, one part of an all-female mechanic shop who loves wearing head-to-toe pink as much as she loves giving manicures to people as they wait for their car repairs. Izzy’s best friend Charlie (Madelaine Petsch) owns the shop and is in a complicated situationship with Beau (Jacob Scipio), her anonymous online crush she doesn’t realize is also her corporate rival IRL. While sparks fly on and offline for Charlie and Beau, her besties Izzy and Kam (Katy O’Brian) provide the comedic relief and humor often lacking in recent romance movies. The movie is a classic rom-com (a nice modern twist on You’ve Got Mail) that allows Bailey to show off, as she puts it, a “more feminine” side we have yet to see from her onscreen.

“You two need to figure this out.” Night Breeze & Entertainment Squad debuted the official trailer for a romantic comedy film titled I Really Love My Husband, an indie romantic comedy from filmmaker GG Hawkins. This is getting released on VOD in November after a small theatrical run in September. Filmed in the beautiful lush islands of Panamá, IRLMH follows Teresa and her “golden-boy” husband Drew who try to enjoy their honeymoon (albeit a year late), but what should be effortless intimacy keeps snagging on small hesitations & unspoken irritations. Enter Paz, the charismatic expat who manages their rental, and someone both Teresa & Drew begin to lay eyes on. After some intimate moments (and shroom ingestions) the couple invite Paz to help spice things up — for better or for worse. Starring Madison Lanesey, Travis Quentin Young, and Arta Gee. IRLMH is a sharp, funny, and emotionally resonant exploration of modern love, identity, and the complexities of commitment. Trusting ambiguity over tidy answers, while letting audiences simmer in questions of desire and commitment, with distinctive blend of humor and sensitivity. This seems like it’s more than about marriage itself, it’s also about sexuality and fluidity and being honest. Take a look.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for GG Hawkins’ film I Really Love My Husband, from YouTube:

I Really Love My Husband Poster

I Really Love My Husband Poster

On a honeymoon in the lush islands of Bocas del Toro, Panamá, Teresa & her “golden boy” husband Drew try to settle into married life – only to find their postcard escape sharpening the edges of what’s already fragile between them. What should be effortless intimacy keeps snagging on small hesitations & unspoken irritations, and Teresa notices the gap between the ideal she’s projected onto Drew and the man besides her. When they meet Paz, the charismatic expat who manages their rental, their balance shifts. Teresa is drawn in – part curiosity, part longing – that attraction exposes what she’s been avoiding: the possibility that her desires don’t fit the story she’s been telling herself. Awkward truths tumble out in half-jokes, glances carry more weight than confessions, and the tropical setting turns ironic – a paradise that won’t let them hide. What follows is a low-boil, funny-uneasy dance among 3 people, where miscommunications and mixed signals peel back questions of commitment, fantasy, and who gets to define a marriage. The closer Teresa gets to naming what she wants, the more the trip offers a reckoning with the cost of honesty.

I Really Love My Husband is written and directed by American indie filmmaker G.G. Hawkins, making her feature directorial debut after a few short films and TV series previously. From a story by GG Hawkins, Madison Lanesey, and Scott Monahan. It’s produced by Elle Roth-Brunet; co-produced by Maria Ventura, Natalie LeVeck. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Entertainment Squad already debuted GG Hawkins’ I Really Love My Husband film in select US theaters in September – it will also be out to watch on VOD starting November 4th, 2025 this fall. Movie Review Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari | A Frothy Romcom That Finds Its Charm In Familiarity | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Shashank Khaitan’s Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari arrives with a title that immediately reminds one of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety—playful, tongue-twisting, and promising frothy entertainer. Much like Luv Ranjan’s 2018 romcom, Khaitan’s film also thrives on the chaos of relationships set against the backdrop of family, weddings, and music-filled festivities. Yet at its heart, the narrative owes more to Hollywood’s I Want You Back (2022), where jilted lovers team up to sabotage the impending union of their former partners, only to rediscover their own spark.

The story unfolds around Sunny (Varun Dhawan) and Tulsi (Janhvi Kapoor), two lovers whose paths cross when they discover that their respective former partners are about to marry each other. Driven by a mix of nostalgia and wounded pride, they embark on a scheme to derail the wedding and win back what they believe they’ve lost. It’s a premise that’s ripe for both situational comedy and emotional tension, and Khaitan keeps the tone largely light, rarely letting the narrative slip into melodrama.

What works best here are the dialogues. The film is peppered with lines that are unabashedly funny, occasionally even surprisingly sensible, and often sharp enough to catch the audience off guard. Several sequences are staged for outright laughter, and more often than not, they succeed. Maniesh Paul emerges as the surprise package of the film, with a comic timing that elevates predictable stretches into genuinely hilarious moments. Adding to the mix is Bollywood’s trademark wedding spectacle—songs staged amidst rituals and ceremonies—that provides the film with its festive flavour and commercial pull.

That said, the story never quite escapes predictability. From the moment the central plot is set in motion, it becomes fairly easy to guess where Sunny and Tulsi’s journey will end. Khaitan doesn’t attempt to subvert expectations, instead relying on charm, chemistry, and comedy to carry the film through. For some viewers, this may feel like a missed opportunity to dig deeper; for others, it will be precisely the breezy, uncomplicated ride they came looking for.

In the end, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari doesn’t reinvent the romcom wheel, but it doesn’t pretend to either. Think of it as a Bollywood cocktail that borrows the festive chaos of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and the narrative hook of, I Want You Back, shaken up with Khaitan’s flair for witty writing and colourful staging. The result is a film that may be familiar, even formulaic, but remains undeniably entertaining.

“You can’t avoid the inevitable. The universe is always going to find a way.” Stan in Australia has revealed the amusing official trailer for a romantic comedy movie called One More Shot, a time loop New Years Eve party story about a woman trying to win over a guy. This premiered at the 2025 Melbourne Film Festival recently and will be out in Australia next month, but has no US release date just yet. An end-of-millennium house party becomes an endless, tequila-fuelled time loop in this funny film starring Emily Browning. Armed with a bottle of time travelling tequila, Minnie arrives at a swanky beach house on New Year’s Eve, 1999, only to discover that her former flame Joe, has brought his new girlfriend. When Minnie takes a shot and is suddenly transported back to the moment she arrived at the party, she soon realises she has a bottle’s worth of chances to win Joe’s heart. But as she tries to rewrite the night, things quickly spiral out of control and no matter what she does or how many times she resets, she can’t escape herself. Also starring Aisha Dee, Sean Keenan, Hamish Michael, Ashley Zukerman, and Pallavi Sharda. This looks fun enough to watch, though the tequila swig concept is clearly going to get out of hand at some point. Get a look below.

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Nicholas Clifford’s film One More Shot, direct from YouTube:

One More Shot Trailer

One More Shot Trailer

On New Year’s Eve, in 1999, with Y2K anxieties in the air and “Coco Jamboo” on the radio, anaesthetist Minnie (Emily Browning) jumps at the chance to attend a party with her ex Joe – whom she still hasn’t gotten over. But everything goes wrong when she realises he’s there with a new girlfriend. One swig from a bottle of tequila after midnight and, in the blink of an eye, Minnie has travelled back in time to the start of the party – a process that, she discovers, repeats with every drink she takes. Each do-over presents a new opportunity to fix her mistakes or compound them further. But will any of them allow her to win back Joe’s heart, or understand what it means to live with the consequences of her actions? One More Shot is directed by Australian filmmaker Nicholas Clifford, making his first feature film after the “Monologue” TV series and many other shorts previously. The screenplay is written by Alice Foulcher & Gregory Erdstein; from a story by Heather Wilson. Produced by Virginia Whitwell, Nick Batzias, Elise Trenorden, Jim Wright. This just premiered at the 2025 Melbourne Film Festival last month. Stan debuts Clifford’s One More Shot film streaming on Stan in Australia starting October 12th, 2025. No US release date is set yet. Look fun?
