Sublime Revisiting Third LP In Full At Red Rocks

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Sublime will honor the 30th anniversary of their classic self-titled third album during an April 17-18 stand at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside Denver, and will perform the LP in its entirety for the first time ever at the first of the two gigs, SPIN can exclusively reveal. Tickets go on sale Friday (Nov. 14).

Sublime was released in July 1996, two months after frontman Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose at the age of 28. Despite the tragedy, it sold five million copies thanks to the enduring punk/rock/reggae-infused hits “What I Got,” “Wrong Way” and “Santeria.”

The band returned to activity last year, with Nowell’s son Jakob taking over for him on lead vocals in tandem with the original rhythm section of drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson. Sublime’s latest single, “Ensanada,” spent seven weeks atop the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, and will be featured on a new album, Till the Sun Explodes, due out sometime next year.

“Red Rocks Amphitheatre is one of the world’s most spiritual places,” Gaugh tells SPIN. “You can feel the power generated by the Earth here! I can’t think of a better place to play, for the first time, the Sublime self-titled album from cover to cover, than Red Rocks. One of our most magnificent albums on one the most magical stages, if not the most magical stage in the world.”

Adds Wilson, “Red Rocks is absolutely my favorite place to play in the world. The sound is amazing and I can’t wait to get back there and share this special event with everyone.”

Sublime’s other 2026 tour dates include the Innings Festival in Tempe, Az., on Feb. 22, Sonic Temple in Columbus, Ohio, in mid-May, and the U.K.’s multi-city Slam Dunk festival on May 23-24. Beforehand, the group will play a handful of radio station-sponsored holiday concerts next month in Tulsa, Ok., Chicago, San Jose, Ca., and Los Angeles.

Blueface Drags Jaidyn Alexis After Chrisean Rock’s Money Claims

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

The tea has been running over ever since Blueface got home from prison. Just days after his release, Chrisean Rock and Jaidyn Alexis went at it online after Rock claimed that Jaidyn asked Blue for money fresh out of prison. Now, Blue is weighing in and setting the record straight. He said Jaidyn barely held him down when he was locked up and even spent his money when she should’ve been looking out for him.

Blueface Puts Jaidyn Alexis On Blast For Spending His Money

For context, Blueface just got home from prison earlier this week after serving 21 months. Almost a week into his release, Chrisean and Jaidyn traded words after Rock accused Jaidyn of hitting up Blue for $1,000 after he got out. Now, Blue has stepped in to clarify things. He posted several messages on X (formerly Twitter), putting Jaidyn on blast for turning her back on him instead of supporting him.

“When I turn myself in I gave Jaidyn 90k told her to sit still she decided to do other things that’s fine tho obviously the money ran out so she said she needed some asap I called Lemi told em give 125k for the season off my relationship with the network she was posed to give me 30k of that an kept it to herself,” Blue wrote.

Then, in another post, he gave Chrisean credit for showing up and said she did more for him than Jaidyn. He claimed Rock held it down for a little, but Jaidyn supposedly checked out within his first week behind bars.

Blue Gives Update On His Relationship Status

Along with his posts about Jaidyn, Blue also seemingly dropped an update about his relationship status. He told fans he thought he was locked in with his girlfriend Angela, but now he’s back to looking for something serious.

“I got out thinking I had a girlfriend/angela 🔒 in but I guess nothing is ever really locked in so now I’m back on the prowl for some serious both of my Bm’s left me in prison stranded for dead if I wasn’t out today they’d still be f***** off…..they will never get the chance to do that again don’t let them run you off ladies,” Blue added.

Chrisean Rock Accuses Jaidyn Alexis Of Harassing Blueface For Money

Blueface seemingly aired out Jaidyn after Chrisean Rock called her out for hitting him up for cash.

“Jaidyn, idk what’s up with you but watch your mouth. I don’t wanna see you in harm’s way all because your bitter and sour heart. Karlissa not even showing the messages between her and Blue like how you took his kids from him just to ask for $1,000 through her,” Rock stated in a now-deleted post on X.

Jaidyn denied Rock’s claims, saying she thinks Rock just comes for her out of jealousy. “I never asked him or nobody for money the entire time he been gone please show me a message where I did.”  After that, Rock told her fans she’s taking a social media break. She said she’s moving solo until Blue changes the way he moves.

“Y’all aint gon see me at all unless I see a change with Blue, his momma and everything that come with that come. I’m standing Dolo. It’s too much fight it’s too much lame stuff going. I got not motives I just come as I am,” Rock wrote.

Taylor Momsen Rocks New Version of ‘Grinch’ Song

by jummy84 November 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Taylor Momsen is revisiting a holiday classic — with a rock twist.

The Pretty Reckless frontwoman has re-recorded “Where Are You Christmas?” 25 years after first performing the song as Cindy Lou Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The reimagined version appears on the band’s new holiday EP, Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas, released Friday (Oct. 31) via Fearless Records.

See latest videos, charts and news

The original ballad, co-written by Mariah Carey, James Horner, and Will Jennings, first appeared on the 2000 film’s soundtrack and was famously performed by Momsen at just seven years old. That same year, Faith Hill’s version reached No. 65 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Momsen’s 2025 update opens with a nostalgic snippet of her childhood recording before launching into a full-blown rock version, anchored by crunchy guitars and her signature gritty vocals. “Where are you, Christmas? Why can’t I find you?” she sings, giving the wistful lyrics new energy and edge.

The six-track EP also includes four original songs — “I Wanna Be Your Christmas Tree,” “Christmas Is Killing Me,” “Blues on Christmas,” and “When We Were Young” — as well as a reprise titled “Christmas, Why Can’t I Find You.”

“Pretty Reckless Christmas started as just one song, but the moment we got into the studio, it took on a life of its own,” Momsen said in a statement. “There was so much emotion, nostalgia and chaos wrapped up in it that it didn’t feel right to leave it standing alone. To really honor it, I needed to build a whole world around it. That’s how this project became a full body of work — something bigger, deeper and far more personal than I ever expected.”

Momsen’s last studio album with The Pretty Reckless, Death by Rock and Roll, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart in 2021, making them the first female-fronted band to hit No. 1 on the chart with their first four albums.

Meanwhile, “For I Am Death,” The Pretty Reckless’ first new music since its 2021 album Death by Rock and Roll, climbs to No. 1 on the ranking dated Nov. 8. It’s the band’s eighth leader and fourth straight, a streak that dates to 2020, when “Death by Rock and Roll” led for three weeks, followed by reigns for “And So It Went” and “Only Love Can Save Me Now” in 2021.

In 2013, The Pretty Reckless made its maiden appearance on the tally with “Heaven Knows,” a song that ended up reigning for four weeks beginning in March 2014. That kicked off a streak of four consecutive No. 1s, with “Heaven Knows” followed by “Messed Up World” (2014), “Follow Me Down” (2015) and “Take Me Down” (2016).

Official Trailer for Acclaimed Doc ‘Cutting Through Rocks’ from Iran

“You all have the power to do anything.” Film Forum has unveiled the official US trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled Cutting Through Rocks, made by the filmmakers Mohammadreza Eyni & Sara Khaki. This premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (listed as one of my favorite films at the fest) and it played at tons of other fests including Hot Docs, Visions du Réel, Edinburgh, Woodstock, Vancouver, and many others. As the first elected councilwoman of her Iranian village up in the north, Sara Shahverdi aims to break long-held patriarchal traditions by training teenage girls to ride motorcycles and stopping child marriages. When accusations arise questioning Sara’s intentions to empower all the girls, her identity is put in turmoil. But she fights back. A real, genuine badass and feminist hero – fighting for women and doing everything she can in her village. I’m a big fan of this film – I wrote in my recap: “An empowering, inspiring story of perseverance & progress no matter the circumstances or the oppression.” Worth a watch.

Official US trailer for Mohammadreza Eyni & Sara Khaki’s doc Cutting Through Rocks, from YouTube:

Cutting Through Rocks Poster

Patriarchy still reigns in the northwestern Iranian village where 37-year-old Sara Shahverdi—divorced, childless, and an avid motorcyclist—became the first woman elected to city council. Wife and husband team Khaki and Eyni followed Shahverdi’s journey over eight years, tracking her inspiring, upstream efforts to subvert economic systems and transform local attitudes (of men and women alike) that destine girls to matrimony and dependence. A midwife and one of nine children, Sara is both deeply connected to the everyday lives of her fellow villagers and a radical lone voice advocating—at great personal cost—for education over marriage, home co-ownership, and girls on bikes. Cutting Through Rocks is a doc film co-directed and co-produced by the filmmakers Mohammadreza Eyni (of The Friend’s House, Convergence: Courage in a Crisis) & Sara Khaki (also of Convergence: Courage in a Crisis). This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). Film Forum will debut Eyni & Khaki’s Cutting Through Rocks in select US theaters starting November 21st, 2025. Highly recommend this doc.

Laufey’s ‘Dream Concert’ Comes True at Red Rocks » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

The dude at the front desk of the Hampton Inn in Golden, Colorado, was a pleasant enough fellow, even if his popular musical knowledge was lacking. “So what brings you here?” he routinely asked, perhaps thinking Coors Brewery or Dirty Dogs Roadhouse in the middle of an early fall afternoon were the likely options for a middle-aged couple looking for a place to collapse after a brew or two.

“We’re going to Red Rocks,” was the reply, just wishing the quick delivery of room key cards wouldn’t further prolong the proceedings.

“Oh, yeah! Who’s playing?” was his Captain Obvious follow-up, when just a few feet to his left was a sign listing all the October acts heading to the majestic outdoors amphitheater in Morrison, just a couple of miles from his workplace.

The name “Laufey” brought a deer-in-the-headlights look, even after he was told the alternative artist was an Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter-producer who plays multiple instruments and has recently been performing in front of packed houses across North America.

Either clueless or unimpressed or both, he added, “The only singer I know from Iceland is Björk.”

Man, he never knew what he missed. For anyone else out of the loop: The pop queen, a fantastic young entertainer who seamlessly shifts genres from jazz to classical to her own show tunes that would rightly belong in a Tony Award-winning musical, wooed the masses numbering 9,000-plus on 8 October.

Touring Canadian and US cities the rest of the year before heading across the pond in 2026 behind her latest full-length album, A Matter of Time, released on 22 August, Laufey (pronounced LAY-vay) reigned over an adoring audience. While the male species was represented, the majority were young girls in frilly white dresses and stylish women in fringe, beads, and bows who sang along to each song while standing on their dancing feet for most of the show that lasted nearly two hours.

Following English singer-songwriter-actress Suki Waterhouse’s superb, wind-aided 40-minute set, some pre-show recordings ranging from Frank Sinatra (“Witchcraft”) to Chet Baker (“Look for the Silver Lining”) set the mood. Laufey recognizes the greats, no matter their age, race, or gender.

Performing with a crackerjack four-piece band on her left and a stunning string quartet on her right, Laufey also brought along her robust alto, several instruments and four athletically inclined dancers, who added ballet and stretchy steps while keeping the leading lady on her toes. There was no doubt. A star was born on this starry, starry night.

Classic Entrance

For starters, old-fashioned black-and-white opening credits straight out of a silent movie appeared on the giant video screens on each side of the stage along with an “Act I” designation, assuring the Red Rockers this extravaganza wasn’t going to be a typical concert.

Almost like “Clockwork”, her flashy first number of the album and set, the 2024 Grammy winner appeared shortly after the listed starting time of 8.10pm. She wasted no time in heaping praise on the scenic setting, saying enthusiastically, “I’m so, so excited to be here. This is probably the most beautiful venue I’ve ever played. It’s such a dream concert for me.”

The equally upbeat “Lover Girl” followed, with rhythmic handclaps setting the pace along with squeals of delight from the crowd. Yet the essence of her existence even revealed itself in one line on this celebratory evening: “Oh, what a curse it is to be a lover girl.”

Even if there was a hint of sarcasm, nobody dared to argue the point of a hitmaker whose most recent record debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart in early September. Humble, playful, warm, witty, charming and, yes, lovable, Laufey is living the dream, cursed or blessed.

She also continued to reinforce a message of empowerment while touching on her own insecurities. “Dreamer”, from 2023’s Bewitched, utilized a cool piano intro and some pretty backing track harmonies while delivering the spirited lyrical statement: “No boy’s gonna kill the dreamer in me.”

To some bossa nova beats, doubts of realizing those dreams linger in “Falling Behind”, from 2022’s Everything I Know About Love, ending with, “Everybody’s falling in love but me.”

The ballad “Silver Lining”, enhanced with a swooning croon and her red Gibson ES-335 electric guitar, brought out the lights from a throng of cellphone holders who also sang along to these harsh words: “When you go to hell, I’ll go there with you too.”

From devilish to angelic beliefs in a matter of seconds, Laufey gushed after the song, reiterating, “Thank you for lighting up the world up for me. It’s a very crazy feeling to feel like all my dreams are coming true. … I know you guys are busy and your time is valuable and the fact that you spent your time and money to come here, I don’t take it for granted, not for one second.”

Though many of her own songs (including 13 of the 15 from the latest LP that offers a cover of “Seems Like Old Times” as a bonus cut) are filled with romantic notions that either hit or miss, she doesn’t hesitate to put members of the opposite sex in their place.

“Bored”, from 2024’s Bewitched: The Goddess Edition, is a clearcut example of that impulse, with just the title eliciting loud cheers, laughs and screams by her supporters. In introducing the song, Laufey admitted it’s “kinda mean,” yet honestly conveyed that “it’s about that feeling when you’re with someone and you just kind of develop, how you say, ‘Ick!’ And why? Just like all of a sudden, everything about this person is starting to annoy you.”

It’s another ballad with her lovely voice providing a hostile thought, reminiscent of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain”:

Maybe you’re just way too vain to be interesting /
Baby keep talking but nobody’s listening
Lyrics from Laufey’s “Bored”

‘Welcome to My Jazz Club’

Laufey cooled down for “Act II” as the set transformed into a jazz setting that included the appropriate music, starting with “Seems Like Old Times”, initially recorded by Guy Lombardo’s orchestra in 1945. The gorgeous tune, covered by the likes of Kate Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, and Rosemary Clooney, first did a number on me when I heard Diane Keaton bashfully sing it as the title character in Annie Hall.

Keaton’s death three days after this show will make the song linger even more in my mind, along with its performance by Laufey, who takes those soothing, nostalgic notes to another level with a jolt of jazzed-up swing.

After her stunning rendition, Laufey explained, “I really want to find a way to make kind of like a unique, intimate moment in the middle of the set, where these guys really get to shine and I kind of get to dance a little, you know.”

Annie Hall couldn’t have said it better. The musicians for this accomplished mission were: Heather Rivas, keys; Dario Bizio, bass; and Maverick MacMillan, drums. (Guitarist Ryland Holland wasn’t part of the jazz ensemble.)

Along with her own originals like “Valentine”, “Fragile”, and “While You Were Sleeping”, “Act II” included a cover of “It Could Happen to You” from the Great American Songbook.

A piano-driven standard recorded by Bing Crosby in 1943 with music written by Jimmy Van Heusen, Laufey added a lemon-fresh zest while performing it on this A Matter of Time tour for the first time at Red Rocks, scatting included. This chanteuse brings to mind the glory days of yesteryear, with sultry torch singers like Billie Holiday and Julie London. Laufey on the Rocks? Yes, please!

Fashion Forward

Known for her Oddli-created felt crowns that were spotted throughout the crowd, Laufey took about a five-minute intermission while nearing the show’s halfway point to announce her “best-dressed guest” on a night when passion was displayed by a fashion-conscious audience.

A girl named Lucy, whose hand-sewn hoop skirt woven to include the clock theme that’s a central part of the third full-length studio album and stage design, appeared starstruck when walking up to meet Laufey. The excited winner received a special crown adorned with painted red rocks from “Mei Mei”. The artist’s popular life-sized bunny mascot will be the subject of the first-time author’s debut picture book that will be published next April.

Made for little kids (and fans of all ages), Laufey has developed a special connection with youngsters through her music and outside projects, recently launching the Laufey Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to benefit aspiring musicians.

Laufey 2025

Her affection for fellow artists is also apparent as this tour includes dates with various orchestras, along with a special opening act at Red Rocks and other cities. Laufey gave a shout-out to Waterhouse, cheerfully saying, “I feel so lucky when I get to have someone so cool and talented open for me. Really, I feel like I get a free concert every night. It’s honestly how I choose who will support me on tour. I am like, ‘Who do I want to hear every single night?’”

Multicultural (also half-Chinese; her mother is from Guangzhou) and multi-instrumental, Laufey mentioned she grew up fascinated with the cello as an orchestra member and “I always dreamt of getting cheers for playing” the instrument. “It’s been the greatest joy of my life to get to continue on this journey of recording songs with orchestras and playing with orchestras,” she said, turning to a grand piano to perform “Let You Break My Heart Again”. The weeper (“one of the very first songs I ever put out,” she offered) appears on the soundtrack album/concert film A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl. It includes the wistful-thinking line “Someday, someone will like me like I like you”.

Don’t be misled, though. Laufey isn’t a woebegone, down-on-her-luck outcast. Combating anger/disappointment with a deft sense of humor, this is a performer who can add comedic touches to tragic episodes. During a mid-set video, she even poked fun at herself for making a few outfit changes. (“It’s my show,” she acts with a sneer. “I can wear what I want.”)

Beauty and the Beat

The ever-changing stage displayed a spinning carousel in the background as the enchanting song of the same name opened “Act III” with Laufey accompanied by her acoustic guitar. “Forget-Me-Not” featured the beautiful sounds of string quartet players Michelle Shin, Lucinda Chiu, Chrysanthe Tan, and Juan-Salvador Carrasco. Dancers Olivia Zeimi, Julia Alaimo, Bostyn Brown and Dabria Aguilar returned for “Cuckoo Ballet”, a tick-tock clock starting an orchestral-like instrumental interlude on which Laufey played the cello.

Then the knives came out again like deep cuts from a sharp sword. In the sprightly “Mr. Eclectic”, leading off “Act IV,” she sings: “Talking ’bout some dead composer / You’re just a stoner patronizing me.”

In “Clean Air”, Laufey drops an F-bomb while sweetly telling off her target, “My soul has suffered, get the fuck out of my atmosphere.”

On the swirling “Tough Luck,” one of the finest cuts off A Matter of Time (that she coproduced with customary collaborator Spencer Stewart and new addition Aaron Dessner of the National), an ultimate loser hears:

Tough luck, my boy, your time is up / I’ll break it first, I’ve had enough /
Of waiting ’til you lie and cheat / Just like you did to the actress before me
Lyrics from Laufey’s “Tough Luck”

Overcoming obstacles while admitting her insecurities are “still kind of there,” Laufey addressed the latter ahead of “Snow White”.  Calling it “probably the most vulnerable song on my new album,” the words ring true: “The world is a sick place, at least for a girl.” This one was born in Reykjavik, while raised there and in Washington, DC, before graduating from the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Laufey remembers herself growing up in Iceland (with Junia, her identical twin sister) as “an orchestra nerd” with different hobbies, “and it was glaringly obvious to me that I was different, and I didn’t feel … like it was a good thing. I see it now as a good thing. …

“I really empower all of you to always share your feelings and even though it’s really scary, they can be a very powerful tool.” There’s obviously stainless-steel strength in the woman whose full name is Laufey Lin Bing Jonsdottir.

“Act V” started and ended with the magnificent fury of “Sabotage”.  Reaching her peak by ascending the stage’s high staircase, this for-real idealist who can follow up that explosive set closer with the tender encore “Letter to My 13-Year-Old Self” doesn’t mess around. It’s only A Matter of Time for infatuation to strike anyone willing to join Laufey’s winning troupe of loyal lovelies.

That includes the Golden guy who’s too busy checking in guests before checking out this team dream weaver.

Gracie Abrams’ Red Rocks Shows Will Be Livestreamed by Apple Music

The Secret of Us (Deluxe) tour might be over, but you can relive it on screen this fall

Gracie Abrams‘ The Secret of Us (Deluxe) tour might be over, but you can relive it this fall. Apple Music will stream the singer-songwriter’s Red Rocks show on Oct. 29.

Abrams played the iconic Morrison, Colorado venue on Aug. 11 and 12, where she performed her hit “That’s So True,” the fan favorite “Death Wish,” gems from the deluxe, and surprise songs (“Block Me Out” on Night One, “I Know It Won’t Work” on Night Two).

It’s unclear which show (or both) will stream, but Apple Music’s livestream is slated for Oct. 29 at 10 p.m. ET, and will be available afterwards on Spatial Audio. Zane Lowe will interview Abrams prior to the event.

Abrams released The Secret of Us, her second album, in June 2024, and dropped the deluxe version that October. The 2024 and 2025 tour legs allotted to 83 shows (including her Madison Square Garden debut). The two Red Rocks performances took place in the final month of tour, which concluded with two nights in Mexico City on Aug. 26 and 27.

Earlier this week, Abrams appeared in conversation with Cyndi Lauper for Rolling Stone‘s Musicians on Musicians package, and discussed her lengthy tour. “The whole thing is constantly shocking,” she told Lauper. “I also find the dopamine-hit piece of it all interesting to contend with, when you stop for even two days.”

Trending Stories

She added: “My greatest takeaway from touring, especially over the past year, because I was feeling kind of existential about it right after the election and everything was on fire … it turns out the best and highest use of my being here on this planet is for the two hours a night that people feel they can come and have some place to, at the very least, be around strangers who are expressing anything loudly. We don’t even really get that these days.”

Andrew Jarecki’s ‘The Alabama Solution’ Rocks Sundance Film Festival

[Editor’s note: This interview was originally published on January 29, 2025 and has been lightly updated for the film‘s HBO debut Friday, October 10. It will also be streaming on HBO Max and is currently in limited theaters for Oscar qualification.]

Andrew Jarecki was never more anxious about sharing a new project at Sundance.

At the festival, the veteran documentarian debuted his Oscar-nominated “Capturing the Friedmans” (2003), “Just a Clown” (2004), “Catfish” (2010), and Emmy-winning series “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” (2015), which he followed up with a popular sequel.

Earlier this year in Park City, Jarecki and his producer-turned-co-director Charlotte Kaufman premiered HBO’s “The Alabama Solution,” a hard-hitting exposé of the brutal Alabama state prison system, a six-year investigative project that deploys video footage taken on the contraband phones of the inmates themselves, as well as interviews by the filmmakers. The movie inspired a long, standing ovation at The Library, and the film’s activist subjects, Melvin Ray and Robert Earl Council, sent a pre-recorded video and participated in a live Q&A by phone from prison. It had an Oscar qualifying run in limited theaters starting October 3 and is a strong contender for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar, with a 90 on Metacritic.

This movie left my jaw open a few times. I gasped at the shocking conditions at the Alabama prisons: water sloshing on floors, strewn garbage, the rats accompanying solitary confinement. The filmmakers themselves became inured to the horrifying video footage the inmates sent them via their cell phones. They saw men’s faces bashed by prison guards, the bloody streaks left behind by men dragged after a beating. They learned of murders.

“First, you have to wrap your head around that this is a reality that’s happening in our country’s prisons,” Kaufman told IndieWire over Zoom. “Most people understand that America’s prisons are tough, but I don’t think people quite understand to what level is the cruelty, the trauma, the abuse, the negligence. The first couple of years of making this film was like having a bucket of ice water dropped on us every day.”

Six years ago in 2019, Jarecki’s daughter was reading a book about Anthony Ray Hinton, who had been wrongfully convicted in Alabama. Jarecki was reading articles about Montgomery and a memorial to people who had been victims of lynching. “It was Presidents’ weekend, and we said, ‘We got to go to Montgomery, maybe we’ll learn something,’” said Jarecki. “Pretty much by chance, I met a man who was the first Black prison chaplain in the state of Alabama, and we started talking. And because I’ve been interested in the justice system, and made a bunch of films in and around it, I started asking him about the prisons. He said, ‘Well, why don’t you come in and volunteer?’ And I said, ‘Would they let me in there?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, if you come and volunteer, you can do it.’”

That’s why Jarecki and Kaufman decided to check out the Alabama prisons. They eventually obtained permission to film the opening scene, an outdoor picnic for the inmates at Easterling Prison. “It was then that we started to be taken aside by these men,” said Jarecki. “And we discovered that there were things happening in the prison that nobody on the outside was allowed to see. So that was the initial way in.”

Once they got that first glimpse and whisperings of what was going on, the filmmakers felt “compelled to continue to look and to investigate,” said Kaufman. “The main response to all of this horror is a feeling of wanting to understand how it’s possible this is happening. As much as there’s sadness and outrage, feeling compelled to keep looking and to keep understanding.”

Another wrinkle: The two ringleaders of the activist movement inside the prisons, Council and Ray, who launched the Free Alabama Movement and were posting on social media like Facebook and YouTube, were in increasing danger. The film shows them hit and then slammed in the isolation tank. “We knew, as we started to learn about just how dark things were in the prison,” said Jarecki, “that people were regularly retaliated against. When we were told about these incredible leaders inside, Robert Earl Council and Melvin Ray, it was clear that they were going to be able to tell us things that we otherwise wouldn’t know, and give us a perspective from the view of somebody who’s in the midst of that horrible system. They had been working for many years fearlessly to get the word out. But trying to get through the walls of the prison is difficult.”

Anxiety about the potential reaction to the movie drove the filmmakers to keep a tight lid on the film before they showed it at Sundance. “It’s driven by our deep concern for their safety,” said Kaufman, “and wanting to be intentional of how we release it to the world, so that their attorneys, their defense committee, and they themselves, can be prepared, and that it’s not in a disorganized fashion.”

The mission and practice of the incarcerated subjects documenting their lives within prison walls even predated the film’s production. “When events were happening around them that they felt was important for the world to see, they were documenting it,” said Kaufman. “But obviously, one-off videos sometimes don’t portray the whole truth of what’s happening. They’ve shared with us, and then they gave us a lot of their time to have these in-depth conversations throughout six years. The fact that we were able to have those conversations not on the wall phone, which is monitored by the prison, but we were able to have them through this other means was extremely meaningful.”

Often the prisoners stand in the window holding their phones, so their faces are illuminated. They bought the phones from the prison guards. With no wifi, they nabbed cellular service signals in the sky, and figured out ways to charge the phones. “There would be conversations about, ‘Oh, you’re backlit.’ ‘When’s the next time we’re going to be able to talk?’” said Kaufman. “How precious do you want to be about those things? Because the most important thing is the dialogue, and the medium is the message. That’s part of the point of this film: Should it be that difficult to be able to have honest conversations and document what’s happening in our facilities?”

It’s not new to have cell phones in prisons across the country. “Cell phones have been present in Alabama’s prisons and in many prisons since 2013-14,” said Kaufman. “Not everybody is using the technology in such a brave way and ingenious way, as the men who are in our film, but they are present.”

For the moment, neither Ray nor Council are in solitary confinement. “The retaliation against them has been pretty varied over the years, and obviously for long periods of time,” said Jarecki. “The two of them together have spent a combined 14 years in solitary confinement. At the moment, they are, from a relative standpoint, stable. They’re keen to see people react to the film and see people absorb this material that’s been secret for so long. So they’re concerned, and we’re concerned, obviously, about any further retaliation by the administration.”

Kaufman sees the film as not all about the evils of the prison system. “As much as this film is about all of the darkness and the corruption and the cover-up,” she said. “It’s also a portrait of human resilience. And they are still very resilient.”

The movie introduces us to people who we would not otherwise get a chance to meet. And we can see their humanity. But we see the Alabama prison system denigrating convicted criminals, no matter their race, as somehow not deserving of being treated as human beings. “There’s this binary quality to the thinking about criminal justice,” said Jarecki. “There is a mindset that there are people who are criminals and people who are not criminals, and our job here is to just root out the bad ones and then lock them up forever, because society will be safe with no recognition of which crimes we prosecute. You could have a person that’s stolen a billion dollars in taxes. Maybe that person is going to get pardoned. You have another person that’s stolen $30 in baby formula. Maybe that person’s going to get locked up for a long time. So the system is seemingly illogical.”

It’s hard to witness in the film just how intractable and resolute the Alabama prison establishment and state government have been in refusing to do anything about what’s going on. “In the early days,” said Jarecki, “we thought, ‘surely they will recognize that when the Department of Justice is writing findings letters that say that horrible things are happening, the state is going to respond to that in some way, right?’ We’ve talked to people in the DOJ who’ve said, ‘Most of the time, when we bring up massive problems in a state’s prison system, constitutional violations, horrible conditions, the state is embarrassed, and the state wants to do something about that.’ Not so with Alabama.”

Of all the terrible prison systems in America, Alabama is the worst. “It’s the deadliest prison system,” said Jarecki. “That includes the highest level of drug overdoses, of murder, of rape and suicide. However, as you could see from the film, similar things are happening in many states, because these states are not allowing anybody to see inside, and so journalists don’t get access to these prisons. You say democracy dies in darkness. People die in darkness. We think of that as something that happens in some far off country or in the middle of war. There’s a great line from Melvin Ray: “How is it possible that a journalist can go into a war zone, but can’t go into a prison in the United States?”

While scholars have shown that mass incarceration is rooted in racism and historical slavery, Kaufman said, “This is a system that hurts everybody. It’s harmful to the guards, it’s harmful to those incarcerated. The cruelty doesn’t discriminate. The system is an equal opportunity disaster.”

Next Up: The film is generating an impact campaign. “The film is the beginning of what we hope is going to be an impact both in Alabama and outside Alabama,” said Jarecki. “Charlotte and I are both working a lot on that. It’s going to be a way of life for the next year.”

“The Alabama Solution” is currently in limited theaters and will make its debut on HBO and HBO Max Friday October 10.
