Neurologist explains why resistance training is important for all ages: ‘Keeps bones dense, reduces fracture risk…’

by jummy84 November 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Bone density naturally declines as we age, but the good news is that regular exercise can slow this process and protect you from serious injuries later in life. If you’ve been putting off strength training, consider this your sign – your stability, balance, and overall strength depend on it. Simple, consistent resistance work can make the difference between fragile bones and a resilient, healthy body as you grow older.

According to Dr Bing, resistance training is important for everyone. (Unsplash)

Dr Bing, a neurologist, biostatistician, brain-health advocate, and health content creator, has explained why resistance training is essential at every age to maintain strong, healthy bones and muscles. In an Instagram video shared on November 12, the neurologist explains how lack of exercise weakens bones and makes them susceptible to fractures, and emphasises how resistance training helps build strength, stability, and long-term bone health.

Why is resistance training important?

Dr Bing highlights the importance of regular exercise, especially resistance training, for optimal bone health, no matter what age you are. He narrates the story of one of his patients – “I recently saw a patient in her 70s who came in after a simple fall at home. She tripped on a step, didn’t even fall from a height and she broke her femur and also suffered a brain bleed from hitting her head and then she had seizures from that. She was then found to have osteoporosis which is when your bones become weaker and more brittle.”

He notes that, unfortunately, cases like this are quite common because of a lack of physical activity. If we fail to challenge our muscles, our bones lose strength, and the balance and stability that naturally wane with age deteriorate even more quickly. The neurologist stresses the importance of resistance training and explains, “But why is resistance training particularly important? Well, because it loads the skeleton and stimulates your bone growth and it signals your body to keep your bones dense and that would drastically reduce hip and femur fracture risk.”

What happens when you skip resistance training?

Dr Bing emphasises, “If you don’t do resistance training in your lower body or your core, you won’t have strong quads, glutes, and core. And your body would have a hard time stabilising itself when you trip. And weak muscles mean that you have slower protective reactions as well. And you can’t catch yourself in time if you fall.”

The neurologist clarifies that you don’t need to be an Olympic-level weightlifter or squat 200 pounds. The key is routine muscle engagement – resistance bands, your own body weight, light dumbbells, or anything that makes your muscles work against some resistance.

Neuroscientist shares 3 major risk factors for developing Alzheimer’s disease: Vitamin deficiency, inflammation, more

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Alzheimer’s and dementia are often thought of as conditions that strike only in old age – but the groundwork for these diseases can be laid decades earlier. Certain risk factors and lifestyle habits that seem harmless in youth can silently increase the likelihood of developing cognitive decline later in life.

Robert Love, a neuroscientist specialising in Alzheimer’s prevention, has highlighted three surprising yet significant risk factors that are closely linked to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. In an Instagram video posted on November 10, the neuroscientist explains how vitamin deficiencies, poor sleep, and chronic inflammation can act as hidden triggers for dementia, ultimately increasing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Vitamin D deficiency

According to Robert, vitamin D deficiency is one of the surprising yet major risk factors for getting Alzheimer’s. He explains, “Most of us don’t get enough vitamin D because we spend most of our time inside. So, you can get 20 minutes of sunshine exposure a day, or you can take a vitamin D supplement. I do both.”

Inadequate sleep

Poor sleep isn’t just about feeling tired – it’s one of the major contributors to a wide range of health problems and a significant risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. Robert highlights, “Sleep is when you repair your brain. It’s when you rewire memories, wire up new memories, and it’s when you get a literal brain washing with the glymphatic system, which is basically like the lymphatic system for your brain.” He recommends making sure you limit your screen exposure at least an hour before bedtime by turning off your TV and phone, and prioritising at least eight hours of good sleep.

These are the risk factors outlined by Robert.(Image generated via ChatGPT)

Inflammation

Inflammation is another key risk factor linked to Alzheimer’s, and Robert emphasises that the process can begin as early as 30 years before any visible signs of dementia appear. He explains, “Inflammation is caused by a variety of things – stress, bad diet, sedentary lifestyle. So the best way to reduce your inflammation is to avoid ultra-processed food, spend time with people you love and spend time outside in nature.”

Thamma Ayushmann Khurrana Talks About His Box Office Achievements & Upcoming Sooraj Barjatya Film, “I Am A Quintessential Risk Taker…”

Exclusive: Ayushmann Khurrana Celebrates His 5th 100 Crore Film Thamma ( Photo Credit – Maddock Films )

Ayushmann Khurrana is currently enjoying the success of his horror comedy Thamma, also starring Rashmika Mandanna. Helmed by Aditya Sarpotdar, the film is the fifth offering of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, and it has led the MHCU to a 1000 crore total in India. Interestingly, Ayushmann is the only Indian actor of his generation who delivered two 100 crore films post-COVID!

The superstar, who is excited for the upcoming trajectory of MHCU, in an exclusive conversation with Koimoi, talked about his box office achievements and how he has never shied away from taking risks. He promised to continue taking risks with his upcoming line of films, which also includes Sooraj Barjatya’s next.

Ayushmann Khurrana On His Box Office Achievements!

The actor has delivered the 5th 100 crore grosser of his career, but Ayushmann emphasized being a pure artist at heart. Talking about delivering the highest-grossing standalone film of MHCU, the actor said, “I’m too right-brained to think about numbers. But one thing that numbers indicate is that you’re reaching out to as many people as possible, and for an artist, that’s very gratifying because what you want to do is for people, and their appreciation is the biggest appreciation.

Sequels Should Have Something To Say!

Discussing picking a sequel, the actor maintained, “I always believe you should not go for a sequel if you have nothing new to say.” However, is there a dilemma while picking a franchise that will work like the initial part? The Andhadhun actor affirms, “So if there’s a tight, ready script with something novel in there, which seamlessly segues to the next film, then of course, it should be an obvious sequel. But otherwise, just to gain something out of it, it doesn’t make sense. So I guess I’m for the freshness and uniqueness of scripts more than just going for sequels.

100 Crore Number Game – Not A Pressure!

Talking about delivering two 100 crore films in a post-pandemic world, Ayushmann Khurrana gladly credited it to his filmmakers. The actor said, “For me, numbers only indicate that you’re reaching as many people as possible. I also believe that I’m fortunate to work with very commercial minds like Dinesh Vijan, Amar Kaushik, Aditya Sarpotdar, and the previous films with Raj Chandel and Ekta Kapoor. I believe that this success, this 100 crore number game, makes me more courageous as an artist to take more risks, which I have taken pre-pandemic.”

He continues, “I would love to do films of that genre, which are probably not commercial, commercial (in quotes, on paper), but they still achieve a good feat at the box office. And, you know, commercial films like Dream Girl, Thamma, or future films like Pati Patni Aur Woh 2 or Sooraj Barjatya’s next film will make me more confident as a risk taker. Because I’m a quintessential risk taker, I will always do that.”

We wish the actor all the best of luck for his upcoming projects.

Stay tuned to Koimoi for exclusive interviews and Bollywood news.

Why audacity spells the end for risk averse events

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

As risk averse events cost brands millions in lost attention, it’s time to think beyond the template.

For business audiences prioritising strategic impact over pure spectacle, bespoke events are a necessity, not a luxury. However, today’s events landscape is suffocating under recycled formats and predictable experiences, ignoring the fact that the true power of a live event lies in its ability to surprise, provoke, and transform.

To achieve such hard hitting impact, bespoke live events demand original thinking and innovative technological mastery. And yet, the market is flooded with imitators. Consultants who promise customisation, but deliver conformity. Agencies that recycle ideas as well as plastics and call it innovation. We don’t play that game. We don’t retrofit. We reimagine. Every event we produce is built from the ground up in a singular expression of a brand’s ambition, voice, and purpose.

This is where maverick thinking meets excellence in orchestration. We challenge briefs. We push boundaries. We treat every event as a prototype for what’s possible. And we do it with the rigor of seasoned strategists and the audacity of creative pioneers.

David bottrill

As Managing Director David Bottrill says, “Our clients don’t come to us for safe solutions. They come to us for bold innovations. Because in a world of sameness, differentiation is the only strategy that counts. They know that powerful events aren’t just well-produced, they’re well-conceived, well-orchestrated, and well-executed.”

Our strategy is to approach each project as architects of experience, not creators of events. We don’t just lead with ideas. We also lead with technology. From immersive environments powered by AI to real time audience analytics that shape content in real time, we deploy the latest tools not as gimmicks, but as instruments of transformation.

Teresa crookTeresa crook

Teresa Crook, Head of IXM’s Creative Technology and Innovation team, is clear on the irresistible power of creative technology, “We’ve pioneered the use of AI-driven personalisation in live formats, allowing each attendee to experience a journey tailored to their interests and behaviours. We’ve integrated biometric feedback loops to measure emotional resonance in real time. And we’ve built hybrid platforms that not only stream, but also engage, convert, and extend the life of the event far beyond the closing speech.”

But technology alone doesn’t make an event unforgettable. Intent does. Every decision, from venue architecture to content orchestration, is made with precision. Whether the goal is to launch a product, galvanise a team, or nurture investors, we design experiences that perform.

Live experiences remain one of the most potent tools in a brand’s strategic arsenal. Trust is earned through nuance. Relationships are built through experience. And differentiation is achieved through intimacy. But only if they’re done right. Only if they’re designed to provoke, elevate, inspire, and ultimately move.

One thing’s for sure. Time’s up for risk averse conformity. The present demands an audacious approach that combines boutique thinking and service with global reach and scale. If you’re looking for a partner that sets trends rather than follows them, we’re ready. Because in a world of conformity, we’ll help you be the exception, not the rule.

As a passionate, fresh thinking experiential agency, with global scale and reach, Impact XM brings a sharp strategic lens and creative depth to create truly exceptional experiences. Experience real impact.

Bode’s Future at 42 at Risk, Mysterious Note to Vince

by jummy84 November 1, 2025
written by jummy84

What To Know

  • Bode’s future with Station 42 is in jeopardy as Richards warns Jake that the next battalion chief may need to let the Leone go due to ongoing issues in the latest Fire Country episode.
  • Sharon continues to grieve Vince’s death, distributing his belongings to the town, and shares an emotional moment with Bode as she reveals what his father left him
  • The episode introduces a new mystery when Eve discovers an ominous note in Vince’s guitar case, hinting at unresolved secrets.

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Fire Country Season 4 Episode 3 “The Tiny Ways We Start to Heal.”]

“The next battalion chief will need to cut bait and let him go,” Richards (Shawn Hatosy) warns Jake (Jordan Calloway) at the end of the latest Fire Country. The good news? He’s thinking that chief could be Jake. The bad news? The “him” he’s referring to is Jake’s best friend — sure, they may be on the outs right now, but that’s still true — Bode (Max Thieriot).

This comes after the episode begins with Richards eyeing the two as they discuss him and then fight after Bode learns his father left Jake his ax. Jake heard that Richards is asking around to see which stations need firefighters so he knows where to send people if he disbands 42, and Bode can’t believe he didn’t tell him immediately. Then, he’s upset that Vince gave Jake something that had been in the family for generations. Jake argues that Vince made his will after Riley died, before Bode was a firefighter, and Bode takes offense, thinking that Jake’s calling him out on his previously destructive behaviors. What’s important is they make Richards think they’re a solid house and that means faking it if necessary, Jake stresses.

“Sure, I’ll pretend if my dad had gotten out of that fire alive, he wouldn’t have ended your career right then and there for holding me back from helping,” Bode tells him, and Jake retorts, “I didn’t realize you were back to being the Bode who didn’t give a damn about anything other than himself. And if your dad had gotten out alive, he would’ve kicked your ass out again.”

Eve (Jules Latimer) is the one to clue Jake in on something he forgot: It’s Vince’s birthday. But when Jake tries to talk to Bode about it, the other man brushes him off (“Not your dad,” ouch!) during a call that Richards is looking at for 42 to prove the house isn’t dead and doesn’t need to be disbanded. And the firefighters both do and don’t.

Eike Schroter/CBS

Manny (Kevin Alejandro) continues to really step up, helping Audrey (Leven Rambin) when a victim’s injuries remind her of what happened with Finn in the Season 3 finale, and Richards takes note. (Maybe it’s just us, but Battalion Chief Manny Perez has a nice ring to it…) Jake tries to rein in Bode when he shouts at the guy who got stuck up on the zipline, whose friend fell (but fortunately survived), and who set off fireworks, all for a proposal. Bode’s upset that this guy could have caused another fire that consumed the town and brought them out to risk their lives. Richards finally intervenes and warns Bode to listen to his captain or he’ll be suspended.

Then, near the end of the episode, Richards opens up to Jake about his cats and garden, which he likes and loves and would much rather be with than at 42. He also admits that he thought he would be at 42 for the long haul, but now he’s thinking he can leave sooner rather than later — and that Jake can take over as chief.

“But leaders have to make hard calls, and whoever ends up in charge here is going to have to make a real hard one. 42 has a problem. Bode Leone. Yesterday, you handled him. That’s not going to be every day. I know he came out of con camp, I’m the first person to believe in the power of turning things around. I love a good redemption story. But Leone is not one,” Richards warns Jake. “The way things are going, there’s a damn good chance the next battalion chief will need to cut bait and let him go.” Uh-oh.

Meanwhile, Sharon (Diane Farr) continues to grieve for her husband. Since there are some people in Edgewater who lost everything in the fire, she’s sorting through Vince’s belongings to donate — and his favorite jacket accidentally ends up given away. She and Vince’s ex, Renee (Constance Zimmer), try to track it down, and when Sharon finds someone wearing it, she simply asks for a hug. She also continues to pass out the items that Vince wanted his loved ones to have. For Manny, it’s his challenge coin. (We also continue to get great moments that highlight Sharon and Manny’s friendship, with him offering to stay on her comfortable couch when she admits to struggling sleeping in the house alone and not wanting to ask Bode.)

Bode confides in Audrey that he doesn’t expect there to be anything for him from this father, given where their relationship was when Vince made out his will. But he’s wrong.

Sharon finds Bode in the locker room after he’s returned from the call and remarks he’s inherited his father’s lack of patience for fire hazards. She also wants to know why he hasn’t stopped by the house to find out what he left him. Bode explains he doesn’t expect anything, but Sharon reminds him that he and his dad were in a much better place when they lost him. She and Vince talked about that, Bode, the life he’s made for himself, and how proud they are of him all the time. Vince left Bode his wedding ring. “He loved you so much, right up to the day he died,” Sharon assures a crying Bode and wipes away his tears. “This is so hard,” she admits. “I miss him so much. I miss you, too.” Bode hugs her and tells her not to worry about him. It may be the best scene of the season so far.

Sharon should probably be worrying about Bode, however. The good thing is Manny and Audrey are keeping an eye on him — especially now that Audrey’s told Manny about the pills she found that he did not flush.

Oh, and the episode sets up a mystery. Eve finds a note in Vince’s guitar case (what he left her): “Vince, call me back or I will blow up your life. I have Sharon’s number and I will use it. From R.” Eve thinks it’s from Renee. Is she right? What is this about?!

What did you think of the latest episode? What are your theories about that note? Let us know in the comments section below.

World Stroke Day 2025: Chennai cardiologist warns of a ‘stubborn’ hypertension type that silently raises stroke risk

written by jummy84

World Stroke Day 2025: October 29 is observed as World Stroke Day, aimed at raising awareness about stroke prevention, treatment and recovery. The theme for this year is ‘Every minute counts,’ highlighting the importance of timely action, which helps to save lives. As per the World Stroke Organisation‘s data, 90 per cent of all strokes are linked to modifiable factors. On this day of observance, it is crucial to take a closer look at one of the most significant ones: hypertension.

There’s a type of high blood pressure which is stubborn, leading to strokes. (Picture credit: Shutterstock)

ALSO READ: Neurologist shares the 3S that silently increase your stroke risk

Several studies have been conducted that established hypertension as one of the primary risk factors for stroke. One of the recent study published in Cardiovascular Diabetology in August 2025 further reinforced this link, that when hypertension is combined with elevated stress-related blood sugar levels, stroke risks spike significantly. Hypertension is such a dominant and well-established predictor that newer studies are now combining it with other biological markers to get an even better picture of the stroke risks.

While you are already aware of hypertension, there’s one type of hypertension that is stronger and dangerous, because it stays high even after taking multiple medications.

To understand this type of hypertension, HT Lifestyle reached out to Dr Babu Ezhumalai, senior consultant – interventional cardiology, structural and endovascular interventions cardiology at MGM Healthcare in Chennai. He drew attention to this type of hypertension as it’s ‘stubborn.’ It is called resistant hypertension (RHTN)

What is resistant hypertension?

As per the cardiologist, resistant hypertension is more than ‘regular high blood pressure.’ If high blood pressure is dangerous, then this type takes it up a notch because it usually doesn’t respond to medications as easily.

“Resistant hypertension (RHTN) is a stubborn form where blood pressure stays high even after taking three or more medications, including a diuretic. What makes it especially concerning is its strong link to stroke, a risk many people are unaware of,” Dr Ezhumalai said.

Further, the condition progresses quietly, as the cardiologist added, “By the time warning signs appear, organs like the heart, kidneys, and brain may already be under strain.”

He cited a study from 2023 which found that, compared to patients without resistant hypertension, those with the condition had a 14 per cent higher risk of stroke.

If this type of hypertension is left unchecked, Dr Ezhumalai alerted that the chances of strokes silently increase. “Patients with RHTN are more likely to experience strokes, often without any obvious warning.” Other than stroke, he added, this hypertension also raises the risk of organ damage.

“About 10% of people with high blood pressure may have RHTN. In India, millions may be at risk without realising it, because the condition often shows no symptoms until serious complications occur,” he said, adding that the lack of early warning signs makes consistent monitoring essential.

What are the warning signs?

Headaches are one of the common signs. (Picture credit: Freepik)

“RHTN is usually silent. Headaches, dizziness, or nosebleeds may occur only in severe cases. Most damage to the heart, brain, and kidneys happens quietly over time,” the cardiologist described some of the signs.

Management

Resistant Hypertension can be managed with the help of lifestyle adjustments and medical care. Here are 4 key steps Dr Ezhumalai recommended for managing resistant hypertension:

  1. Regular monitoring is essential: Check your blood pressure at home and consider 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) to detect hidden spikes or nocturnal hypertension, both key risk factors for stroke.
  2. Diet: Even stubborn blood pressure can respond to lifestyle changes. Following a DASH diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy, while reducing salt intake, can help lower blood pressure.
  3. Exercise: Regular physical activity, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling, also contributes to better control.
  4. Stress management and quality sleep: Managing stress and getting adequate sleep play an important role, as both help reduce strain on the heart and brain and support overall cardiovascular health.

Dr Kunal Sood, an anesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine specialist, explains the key risk factors for brain aneurysms, as well as how they are detected and effectively managed. In an Instagram video posted on October 25, the doctor explains what makes an aneurysm dangerous and shares the treatment options that can help minimise the risks.

What is brain aneurysm?

According to Dr Sood, aneurysms are more common than people think, and explains, “It forms when a weak spot develops in a blood vessel and the brain, and slowly balloons outward, like a thin patch on a worn balloon.” However, most aneurysms are harmless and often discovered by chance – the real danger begins when one ruptures. The doctor warns, “If one ruptures, it can cause bleeding around the brain, which is called a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which can be life-threatening.”

Risk factors

Dr Sood highlights the following factors that can increase the likelihood of aneurysms forming or rupturing:

  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Family history of aneurysms

According to Dr Sood, aneurysms are usually detected through MRI or CT angiography. Once identified, their management depends on size and risk. Small, unruptured aneurysms are often carefully monitored, while higher-risk cases may require surgical clipping or endovascular coiling to prevent rupture.

Study reveals men’s brains shrink faster than women with age, shares what it means for Alzheimer’s risk

Women are more likely to get Alzheimer’s, but brain volume stays stable. Find out more about this contradiction and what it means.

With age, the risks of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease rise. As one grows older, the brain’s volume also shrinks in size, losing both grey and white matter over time. A study published in PNAS on October 13, 2025, revealed that the brain’s shrinking pace differs by sex, actually. Men’s brains shrink faster than women’s. So if there’s a correlation between brain shrinkage and neurodegenerative disease, what does it say about women’s increased vulnerability to Alzheimer’s disease?

What did the study find?

The study attempted to understand whether the brain tissue, grey and white matter, shrinks faster in men or women with age. So, according to the researchers, men’s brains with age become smaller in volume, particularly the cortex, shrinking more. However, women’s brains lose volume in certain selective areas, and more or less the cortex’s thickness remains stable. Cortex is associated with important cognitive skills like thinking, memory, and decision-making.

Although there’s no significant difference between men and women in regards to the shrinkage of the hippocampus, the brain area associated with memory, at least until old age. Women showed a decline in this area only later in life. But it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s because of a higher risk of neurodegenerative disorders. Instead, it demonstrates that women may live longer, hence the decline appears later because women reach older age more often than men.

What does it mean?

The interesting contradiction is sure to leave people scratching their heads. So, people with Alzheimer’s showcase a shrunken brain. And women are more vulnerable to Alzheimer’s. But here’s the catch: based on the findings, it implies that brain shrinkage doesn’t always indicate disease; it may be a part of the natural ageing process. Still, there needs to be more research to draw a complete picture of why women are likely to have a higher Alzheimer’s risk.

What's Going On? SNAP Benefits At Risk Of Being Stopped Next Month Amid Government Shutdown (VIDEO)

Food Stamp Benefits At Risk Amid Government Shutdown

Now hold up…we’ve heard about shutdown chaos before, but this one is hitting way too close to home. With the federal government still at a standstill, nearly 42 million Americans are at risk of losing their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits as early as next month.

SNAP’s Running Low And The Clock Is Ticking

According to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, the SNAP program — also known as food stamps — will reportedly run out of money in just two weeks if funding isn’t restored. Let that sink in: millions of families could be left without the help they depend on to eat. Rollins told reporters that the government shutdown has pushed the program to the brink. She said, “So you’re talking about millions and millions of vulnerable families, of hungry families that are not going to have access to these programs because of this shutdown.” While the Trump administration has found money to temporarily keep other services going, it’s not clear if they’ll do the same for SNAP. And, people are watching very closely.

Politics First, Food Stamps Second?

Like many others in the Trump camp, Rollins is pointing fingers at Democrats. The secretary claimed that they’re more focused on political agendas than feeding families. But Democrats are clapping back, too. The party claims that Republicans are the ones blocking a spending deal that would keep programs like SNAP afloat. And while the political blame game plays out, the USDA is already telling states to pause November food stamp payments. Now, that move has left state officials scrambling. In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul didn’t hold back. She called the decision “deliberate and unprecedented” and accusing the administration of using hunger as a political weapon.

Thanksgiving Is Coming — But Will Families Eat?

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the USDA is juggling numbers. With only $6 billion in backup funding, and an $8 billion price tag just for November’s benefits, there’s a serious shortfall. And unlike WIC, which was temporarily saved by a $300 million shift in funds, there’s not enough money left to cover both programs. That means 17 states have already had to stop accepting new SNAP applications. All this comes just weeks before Thanksgiving, a time when families rely heavily on these benefits. And unfortunately, food banks are already stretched thin. “We can’t let households who need help purchasing food become another casualty of this shutdown,” said Ty Jones Cox of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
