India‘s Malayalam-language cinema superstar Mohanlal has been named the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film honor. The country’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting confirmed the selection, with the award to be presented at the 71st National Film Awards in New Delhi on Sept. 23.

The award – instituted in 1969 in memory of Indian cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke, director of “Raja Harischandra” (1913), India’s first full-length feature, who is considered the father of Indian cinema – is given for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.

Mohanlal, whose career spans nearly five decades, has acted in more than 360 films across the Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages. Known for acclaimed performances in titles such as “Kireedam,” “Bharatham,” “Vanaprastham” and the hit franchise “Drishyam,” he has already earned five Indian National Film Awards and multiple Kerala State Film Awards. He was previously honored with the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019, two of India’s highest civilian awards.

Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated the actor, writing on social media: “Congratulations to Lalettan @Mohanlal ji. From the adipoli, beautiful land of Kerala to audiences worldwide, his work has celebrated our culture and magnified our aspirations. His legacy will keep inspiring Bharat’s creative spirit.”

Mohanlal said the recognition was a “major honor for me and for Malayalam cinema,” crediting the audiences and colleagues who have supported his career.

Past winners of the Dadasaheb Phalke award include filmmakers Satyajit Ray, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal and Tapan Sinha, actors Soumitra Chatterjee, Waheeda Rehman, Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar, Rajkumar, Sivaji Ganesan, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Shashi Kapoor, Asha Parekh and Rajinikanth and musicians Manna Dey, Bhupen Hazarika, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.

U2 To Receive 2025 Woody Guthrie Prize

by jummy84 September 18, 2025
written by jummy84

U2 will be honored with the 2025 Woody Guthrie Prize during an Oct. 21 ceremony at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Ok., and group members Bono and the Edge will be on hand to accept. The award is given annually to artists who “best exemplify Guthrie’s spirit and work by speaking for the less fortunate through music, film, literature, dance or other art forms and serving as a positive force for social change.”

“U2 embodies the mission of the Woody Guthrie Prize, using music to confront injustice and inspire action,” says Woody Guthrie Center senior director Cady Shaw. “By presenting the 2025 Woody Guthrie Prize to U2, we honor a legacy of music that continues to challenge who we are and connect us the world over.”

U2 haven’t set foot in Cain’s Ballroom since performing there on April 4, 1981. The band returned to Tulsa again in 1983 and 2018 and is looking “forward to legally buying their own pints this time around,” per a statement.

Bono, Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. join past Guthrie Prize recipients including Pete Seeger, Mavis Staples, Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen and 2024 honoree Tom Morello, who previously told SPIN that Guthrie “is a North Star to guide one’s point of view in dealing with the music industry, dealing with a readiness to always be available, to stand up for the oppressed and to lace your music with not just purpose, but humanity. Woody Guthrie’s children’s songs are as beautiful and as impactful as his songs about immigrant rights and his anti-fascist songs. He’s one of the greatest artists of all time, and for them to think of me is a great honor.”

U2 have been off the road since wrapping its inaugural Sphere residency in Las Vegas in May 2024. Bono told Jimmy Kimmel in May that work was underway on the follow-up to 2017’s Songs of Experience, and described the sound as “four men who feel like their lives depend on it. And I remind them, they do. And you know, nobody needs a new U2 album, unless it’s an extraordinary one, and I’m feeling very strong about it.”

Expect “songs for the kitchen, songs for the speedway, the garage — just for every part of your life. Songs to make up to, songs to break up to. U2 makes a very unique sound when we play together, and I think, yeah, the sound of a room is what we’re going for.”

Hannah Beachler to Receive Variety’s Creative Impact Award at SCAD

Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler will be honored with Variety’s Creative Impact in Production Design Award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival.

Beachler made history when she became the first African American to take home a trophy in the production design category for her work on “Black Panther.” She has been Ryan Coogler’s go-to, with the two working on “Fruitvale Station,” “Creed” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” together.

“SCAD is delighted to partner again with Variety to present the Creative Impact Award to the extraordinary production designer, Hannah Beachler,” said Christina Routhier, senior executive director of the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. “Her work on ‘Sinners’—from the haunting juke joint to the textures of the Mississippi Delta—roots the film in authenticity while elevating the story into something otherworldly. The choices she made demonstrate the power of production design to shape narrative and deepen the cinematic experience. For our SCAD students in production design, film, and television, her artistry is an inspiring example of bold, innovative world-building, and we are thrilled to celebrate her contributions to moviemaking.”

“Hannah’s work is extraordinary. On behalf of Variety, I am thrilled to partner with the team at SCAD Savannah Film Festival and to recognize her work,” said Variety’s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay. ”The Creative Impact Award celebrates someone who has made an impact in their field, and Hannah’s work has done just that. From building Wakanda to the Mississippi Delta in ‘Sinners,’ hearing her talk about her process and research is going to be such a gift for the students at SCAD. Hannah’s insight into her process will be a masterclass, and will be an exciting morning.” Tangcay continued, “This is the first time we have awarded the Creative Impact in Production Design, and what better place to do it than in Savannah, and to present it to Hannah and celebrate her incredible career.”

Beachler will receive this award during the SCAD Savannah Film Festival which will run from Oct. 25 through Nov. 1.

Presented by the Savannah College of Art and Design, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival is filled with cinematic creativity from award-winning professionals and emerging student filmmakers. Each year, more than 63,000 people attend the eight-day festival. A distinguished stop on the road to the Academy Awards, the annual festival kicks off with a gala opening night screening, while the rest of the week features scheduled competition films, premiere screenings, workshops, lectures and panels. These events take place at SCAD’s historic theaters and industry-leading studio spaces throughout the historic city of Savannah, Ga.

As previously announced, Jon M. Chu will receive the Vanguard Director Award and Jennifer Lopez will receive the Virtuoso Award.

Variety’s chief awards editor Clayton Davis will also be returning to host the “Pixels and Pencils” panel.

Latto & Ice Spice Receive Mixed Reactions To Surprise Collab: They Could’ve Kept It

Pigs might be flying because #Latto and #IceSpice got in the booth…together. ?

On Wednesday (Sept. 3), a cover for a collab of the rappers hit the internet and had the people shook. It was initially speculated that the artists would drop the track, #Gyatt, on Friday. Given their history and previous beef, many were unsure if the news was even real. However, the rappers shocked fans by confirming the record, releasing it early, and teasing that a music video is on the way.

Reactions to the single are mixed. Some praised the collab, while others weren’t impressed, with one X user writing, “Latto and Ice Spice just dropped a song and they could’ve kept it.” A few even suspect that, despite seemingly squashing their feud, the two may still be trading subliminal shots in the lyrics.

What do you think? Happy to see more rap girlies coming together? #TJBReacts

Corporation for Public Broadcasting to Receive 2025 Governors Award

Corporation for Public Broadcasting to Receive 2025 Governors Award

by jummy84 September 2, 2025
written by jummy84

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting will be the recipient of the 2025 Governors Award at the Creative Arts Emmys, at which the Television Academy will recognize the organization’s five decades of “enriching America’s media landscape through funding and support for educational, cultural and public-interest programming,” the group announced on Tuesday.

On Sunday, Sept. 7, the trophy will be presented to Patricia de Stacy Harrison, the longest-serving president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Harrison has led CPB since 2005 — through the complex streaming age, in other words.

Unfortunately, an Emmy Award itself is not real, solid gold, which is what CPB really needs these days. In July, Congress voted to eliminate all funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. NPR and PBS were the highest-profile victims. In response, PBS has sued the Trump administration.

“The Governors Award recognizes and celebrates extraordinary contributions that transcend television and transform society,” Television Academy chair Cris Abrego said in a statement on Tuesday. “For more than half a century, CPB has been a steadfast champion of storytelling that informs, educates and unites us and ensures public media remains a vital space where diverse voices are heard and communities are served. With this award, we honor CPB’s enduring legacy and its extraordinary impact on the cultural and civic life of our nation.”

The Governors Award is bestowed by the Television Academy’s Board of Governors and honors an individual, company or organization that has made “a profound, transformational and long-lasting contribution to the arts and/or science of television.”

Previous recipients of the Governors Award include GLAAD, the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, Debbie Allen, Greg Berlanti, Tyler Perry, Star Trek, American Idol, William S. Paley, Hallmark Cards Inc., Masterpiece Theatre, Comic Relief and PBS.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting helped create PBS and has funded it, in part, for decades. It does not own PBS, however. Together, they have brought us iconic series like Sesame Street, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Finding Your Roots, Reading Rainbow, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and other seminal programming, including in the news space.

The 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be held over two consecutive nights, Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE. An edited presentation of the ceremonies will air Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. PT on FXX; the program will be available to stream on Hulu through Oct. 7.

The 77th Emmy Awards will telecast live from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS, and will be available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+.

Mariah Carey Will Receive Video Vanguard Award at 2025 MTV VMAs

by jummy84 August 21, 2025
written by jummy84

MTV has named Mariah Carey its 2025 Video Vanguard Award recipient. The seven-time MTV Video Music Award nominee will perform a medley of her biggest hits when the show airs live on CBS from UBS Arena in New York on Sept. 7.

The coveted award will be the first VMA the musician has received in her storied career. Carey is nominated this year in the Best R&B Video category for her action flick-themed video for “Type Dangerous.” It’s her first nomination as a lead artist since she was up for Best Female Video for “Touch My Body” in 2008. Other highlight career moments, including “Shake It Off” and “We Belong Together,” earned nods over the years, but the Moonmen never made their way to her.

The honor comes at a prime time for Carey, who will release her 16th studio album Here for It All on Sept. 26. The record marks her first since 2018’s Caution. Though she has largely kept details about the project under wraps, she did share another preview on her latest single “Sugar Sweet” with Shenseea and Kehlani.

For her Video Vanguard Award performance, Carey has quite a few options. She could dominate the performance on her own, with plenty of solo hits to fill the space, but her collaborative well runs deep, too. There’s Busta Rhymes, Boyz II Men, Latto, Miguel, Jadakiss, Snoop Dogg, Jermaine Dupri, and more who could join her for the set.

Earlier this year, Carey similarly received her first-ever BET Award when she was honored with the BET Ultimate Icon Award. “My life and career have been quite the adventure,” Carey said during her speech. “It took me a while, but I realized life is far too short to live for anyone else’s approval.”

Trending Stories

Both awards follow Carey’s second shutout from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Carey follows recent Video Vanguard Award recipients Katy Perry, Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, Jennifer Lopez, P!nk, and Rihanna.
