Joan Shelley: Real Warmth Album Review

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Home is not just a point on a map. In the music of Joan Shelley, it’s often embodied by the people who make up a place. For a long time, Shelley’s musical (and literal) home was Louisville, where she was born and raised, where she absorbed so much of the folk music that still inspires her, where she caught her first glimpse of musical community, and where she has collaborated regularly with local players and artists. In the years between 2022’s The Spur and last year’s Mood Ring, however, the woman who once daydreamed about spending humanity’s final moments in her beloved Kentucky, “holding my dear friends and drinking wine,” relocated much further north, to small-town Michigan, with her partner Nathan Salsburg and their daughter.

Throughout her career, Shelley has brought that conception of home wherever she’s gone, whether to End of an Ear Studio in Louisville, where she recorded songs for Mood Ring, or to Wilco’s Loft in Chicago, where she made 2017’s Joan Shelley with two generations of Tweedys. Most recently, she brought it to Toronto, where she fell in with a crew of local musicians to record her sixth album, Real Warmth. Working closely with Ben Whiteley, who plays bass for the Weather Station and Jake Xerxes Fussell and who produced the new record, Shelley and this community of artists devise musical palettes that help bring out new rhythmic elements in her music.

Her collaborators make their presence known immediately. On opener “Here in the High and Low,” they lend a fresh counterpoint to her lilting melodies, the electric guitars and spry percussion churning up an assertive energy. It’s an invocation, meant to welcome and rouse you. There have always been jazzier undercurrents running through Shelley’s music, but here they come to the forefront, especially when Karen Ng’s saxophone flutters around the edges of “On the Gold and Silver.” Real Warmth indulges more instrumental passages, like the coda of “Field Guide to Wild Life,” although sometimes her fellow musicians crowd out the deft picking that has always been a hallmark of her albums.

Generally, these Canadians help chase down Shelley’s idea of home as something to protect, as a place full of people whose pain she would readily bear for them. “God, if I could guard you, take your fire, then burn me now,” she sings on “Everybody”; she might be addressing her partner or their daughter, or her band, or anyone listening to the song. Whiteley and their crew—which includes Weather Station singer Tamara Lindeman, Doug Paisley, Salsburg, and Shelley’s daughter—make her songs sound a little less solitary. In turn, she invites the listener into the music: “Join in the song, join in the band,” she sings on “Here in the High and Low.”

The Real Reason Behind Salman Khan’s Sudden Departure From Battle Of Galwan Sets Revealed | Glamsham.com

written by jummy84

Having completed a difficult shoot in Ladakh, Salman Khan will start the second schedule of his action drama Battle of Galwan next week in Mumbai. Apoorva Lakhia directs the film, which dramatizes the 2020 Galwan Valley skirmish between Indian and Chinese forces—a fierce hand-to-hand battle that turned the tide of recent Indian military history.

As per Pinkvilla, the Mumbai schedule will be among the most important in the film and comprise both intense action sequences and emotional scenes. One source shared that Salman and the team shot in extreme conditions in Ladakh, where temperatures went as low as 10°C and oxygen levels didn’t rise beyond being dangerous. Though Salman had some minor health issues, the actor persevered to finish his portion of work in the 45-day Ladakh shoot schedule, working 15 days on the set.

The next schedule will witness the cast switching over to controlled sets, where they can concentrate on the patriotic action as well as the emotional core of the film. Salman has taken a brief halt to recuperate before going back to work.

In July, fans saw Battle of Galwan for the first time through a motion poster that gave Khan a rugged, battle-hardened appearance. With blood on his face, a stern moustache, and resolute eyes, the teaser promised a performance based on strength, sacrifice, and country pride—against the background of a tense military environment.

The movie hopes to be a moving tribute to India’s military forces, bringing attention to an unusual and heart-wrenching incident in contemporary military history. Although the release date has not been announced, the hype surrounding Battle of Galwan indicates that it will be one of Salman Khan’s most gripping and significant performances to date.

Late night television is going through major changes in 2025. CBS confirmed that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end next year, just weeks after Stephen Colbert picked up another Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series. Over at ABC, Jimmy Kimmel also added to his résumé with a Creative Arts Emmy win for Outstanding Host for a Game Show thanks to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. But his celebration was short-lived — ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been suspended indefinitely following backlash over Kimmel’s recent on-air remarks about the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s killing.

As viewers come to terms with Colbert’s looming exit and Kimmel’s show being pulled from the schedule, questions are swirling about the future of late night and what might come next.

Below, Hollywood Life has a breakdown of why The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is ending.

Was The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Canceled?

Yes, CBS is canceling The Late Show franchise after more than three decades on the air. Stephen took over the show in 2015, and it was originally hosted by David Letterman.

When Is The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Ending?

The Late Show will end in May 2026, CBS executives announced on July 17, 2025.

Why Is The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Ending?

CBS decided to gut The Late Show with Stephen Colbert due to financial reasons, network executives explained in a statement released on July 17, 2025, obtained by Variety.

“We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire The Late Show franchise in May of 2026,” CBS executives said. “We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.”

The executives added, “This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

The merger between Paramount Global — the parent company of CBS —  and Skydance Media is expected to close this year.

Paramount has doubled down on its claim that canceling Stephen’s show was financial. Despite facing criticism from Stephen himself, the network has maintained its answer, with Paramount Global TV Media Chairman George Cheeks following up about the situation.

“The challenge in late night is that the advertising marketplace is in significant secular decline,” George said in an August 2025 press conference, per TV Insider. “We are huge fans of Colbert, we love the show, unfortunately, the economics made it a challenge for us to keep going.”

Is Stephen Colbert Leaving The Late Show?

Stephen did not leave The Late Show voluntarily. Per Variety, the comedian was informed of CBS’ decision on July 16, 2025, and he informed the audience at the next episode’s taping.

What Is Stephen Colbert’s Late Show Salary?

Stephen is reported to have made a salary of around $15 million per year with CBS while hosting The Late Show.

Cardi B Album Rollout: Using Real Life Experience

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

More than any artist, Cardi B paved the way for social media personalities and reality stars to parlay their internet following into a music career. In the lead-up to her sophomore album, Am I The Drama?, she’s taking it back to reaching her audience through a string of viral skits, public appearances, and an emphasis on physical sales. At the risk of sounding like an armchair A&R, Cardi’s grabbed the rollout baton from Clipse and stoked our collective anticipation for her album, out Friday.

Her first skit, on September 3, doubled as a celebration of winning her civil battery case against former bodyguard Emani Ellis. “Just because I won this case…I still got lawyers.” she joked, imploring fans to buy Am I The Drama? CDs for $9.99. The special “Courtroom Edition” CD covers showcase her different viral hairstyles during the trial. “I swear to God, if I don’t sell these albums, I’m gonna have to give up my Rolls-Royce,” she mock cried. She dropped the following promo video days later in Harlem, lampooning 125th Street’s infamous vendors with CDs and vinyl strewn on the sidewalk. The video’s caption read, “My label said I gotta get out in these streets and sell this album,” as she hawked the $9.99 physicals (and incense) while Bob Marley’s “One Love” played in the background.

Her next clip was in a boardroom, where she joked that after shooting her lavish “Imaginary Players” music video, Atlantic Records had scaled back its spending. With expert comedic timing, she opened an envelope and revealed that her “budget” had dwindled to just $50. “I have to get out on the road and sell these CDs and [vinyl] myself,” she said. And the beginning of that journey took her to New York’s MTA, where she did a skit selling CDs and vinyl on a train. She had so much attention to detail that she used the same Welch’s candy box that candy sellers on the train typically use. The latter two clips felt especially familiar to New Yorkers used to people selling items on sidewalks and in between trains.

Editor’s picks

Collectively, the videos didn’t just help promote the album; they needled wannabe industry insiders. Nowadays, music fans can’t just enjoy the music, they need to speculate about first-week sales and the permutations of an artist’s label situation like they’re a manager. Cardi’s meta promotion gets at how invasive music fandom has become while placating those same fans.

The theme of the videos, chronicling her selling music like a starving busker, is another example of Cardi playing into her biomythography. She’s repeatedly expressed her frustration with Atlantic Records over the past few years, especially since the regime that signed her was replaced last September. In July, she made an X post about “being tried by these new people,” shortly before the release of her single,  “Outside” — a release that she’s said was contentious between her and the label. In August, she likened  Atlantic to a “correctional facility” in a since-deleted Instagram post. She’s seen fans speculate about acrimony at Atlantic, and how it may play into the rollout of her new album. Instead of ignoring the fracture, she’s comedically leaned into the turmoil.

Even during her recent rollout, she’s criticized Atlantic for “underestimating” the turnout for her New York City Bodega Baddie pop-up. In an Instagram post, she explained that she wanted to give attendees QR code coupons for her digital store, but the crowd was too ruckus to do so. That snafu might be a good problem for Am I The Drama?, however, demonstrating that her demand is still there.

It’s been a long wait for her latest project. Since the Invasion of Privacy, she has released songs and done features, but her fans have been anticipating a second album. In her June 2024 Rolling Stone cover story, she told writer Mankaprr Conteh about the perfectionism that’s delayed the project: “I take my music so fucking seriously that that’s why I don’t put it out. Because if it’s not perfect to my ear, if every fucking word doesn’t sound like it’s pronounced right, if the beat is overpowering the words or the words is overpowering the beat, I don’t want to put it out.” It’s also worth wondering how pregnancy may have delayed the album; she’s given birth to three children since her April 2018 debut release. Today, she revealed to Gayle King that she’s pregnant with her fourth child and her first with her boyfriend, NFL star Stefon Diggs. Even so, it looks like it’s all steam ahead on her new album; she tweeted shortly after clips from the interview went viral that “by the time tour comes I’ll be doing splits, somersaults, backflips and handstands.”

Cardi B is a natural star. Before she was a rapper, she was a well-known stripper and social celebrity who parlayed outrageous Vine skits into a spot on Love & Hip-Hop: New York — the rest is history. Her career ascended quickly in part because of her sense of humor and charisma. She radiates a bold, no-filter charm that feels familiar to her fellow New Yorkers and captivates the rest of the world. It’s why, despite not dropping an album since 2018, she’s been on shows such as Rhythm + Flow and films like Hustlers, and F9, also doing voice acting for Baby Shark’s Big Movie!  No matter how this album performs, there will always be opportunities for her in front of a camera.

Trending Stories

It’s refreshing to see Cardi get back to having fun. As entertaining as she is, she’s also been in the social mediasphere too often behind civil suits, back-and-forths with other rappers, label drama, and issues with Offset, her ex and the father of her children; her latest album title isn’t surprising. With these self-deprecating skits, she’s going back to what worked for her on day one. In a cheesy movie about a rapper, their manager or partner would have a come-to-Jesus moment with them about reminding fans why they love them, and they’d go to a cipher, or hold a free concert in the park to reacquaint the people. For Cardi, returning to her essence is just about doing silly skits back home in New York.

Clipse were able to parlay a concentrated media press run into commercial success, turning their buzz into a Vatican performance. While Cardi hasn’t done as many interviews, speaking with Billboard, Kelly Rowland, and King, she’s still won goodwill with fans and shifted the discussion from controversy to her comedic chops. If she can put effort into promoting her album, get outside, and head on a national meet and greet tour, there’s no excuse for pretty much anyone else.

Calvin Harris Says Financial Adviser Stole $22M Via Real Estate Fraud

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Calvin Harris is taking legal action against his longtime financial adviser for allegedly duping him into investing $22.5 million in a doomed real estate project “to simply steal” funds from the star DJ.

The allegations are revealed in new court documents filed Friday (Sept. 12) by Harris (Adam Wiles) against Thomas St. John, the Scottish music producer’s financial adviser of over a decade. Harris filed a petition to enforce a temporary injunction in his ongoing arbitration against St. John, and in the process, publicized the details of that private arbitration, which has been taking place behind closed doors since June.

Related

Harris’ June 28 arbitration demand, obtained by Billboard, levels more than a dozen civil claims against St. John and a group of alleged co-conspirators, including breach of contract, fraud and malpractice.

“Out of necessity, Mr. Wiles surrounds himself with professionals, including TSJ, in whom Mr. Wiles placed his trust to ensure his earnings are protected, his investments are smart, and his family and future are secure,” reads the arbitration demand. “However, instead of acting in Mr. Wiles’s best interests, TSJ and the other respondents completely and absolutely breached that trust.”

According to the documents, St. John bought a tract of land in Hollywood in 2021 with plans to develop a recording studio and creative office space. Harris says St. John later became strapped for cash and took advantage of their relationship to sign $22.5 million over to the project in the DJ’s name in 2023.

Of this $22.5 million investment, $10 million was in the form of a loan, which St. John allegedly never paid back. The other $12.5 million was an equity stake in the real estate project — but Harris says this investment “has been, at best, a complete boondoggle, and, at worst, a complete fraud.”

“Mr. Wiles has not received a single penny in return for that investment, and, indeed, respondents have not even started developing or building the project,” reads the arbitration demand. “In fact, shortly after Mr. Wiles purportedly made this $12.5 million investment, TSJ … distributed over $11 million dollars to himself.”

Harris says he has “no idea what exactly happened” with his money. According to the petition, St. John has since shifted the focus of his real estate project away from a recording studio and toward a residential development.

In early August, retired judge Michael R. Wilner was appointed to oversee the dispute as an arbitrator. Harris and St. John agreed on a temporary injunction that freezes certain assets while the matter is litigated, leading Harris to file the court petition on Friday seeking to confirm and enforce this injunction.

A lawyer for St. John, Sasha Frid, says in a statement provided to Billboard on Monday (Sept. 15) that his client “denies any wrongdoing” and that Harris “actively pursued” an investment in the Hollywood real estate project.

“Unhappy with the pace of the project, he chose to pursue private arbitration to assert his discontent,” says Frid. “It’s no secret that due to interest rates and other market factors real estate projects are taking longer to build. But the development is very much viable and expected to have a $900+ million valuation when completed.”

Reps for Harris did not immediately return a request for comment.

The Real Reason ‘The Rockford Files’ Was Abruptly Cancelled

by jummy84 September 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Fans of The Rockford Files probably wondered, “Is that all there is?” when James Garner’s private-eye drama ended abruptly in 1980, midway through Season 6. The NBC show, which celebrates another anniversary on September 13, ended with a sixth season only half the length of the others — cut short due to an ugly, protracted legal battle between Garner and Universal Studios. It wasn’t until the 1990s, after the lawsuit was resolved, that a series of CBS TV movies continued Jim Rockford’s story.

Here’s what happened in the last episode of the original series, and why it all came to a screeching halt.

The Real Emmy Winners Are Women Over 50

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s not every year we can say this, so when we can, we say it with our full chests: It was a great year for women over 50 in TV.

At the 2025 Emmys, which will be broadcast this Sunday on CBS, 13 women over the age of 50 are nominated for their performances across the drama, comedy, and limited series categories. Four of the nominees—Jean Smart, Kathy Bates, Catherine O’Hara, and Deirdre O’Connell—are even over the age of 70. In an industry (and society, for that matter) which has historically discarded women after they’ve aged out of the “sexy love interest” role, this is a welcome win.

For decades, we’ve heard some of the most talented women in the game express fear that they will “age out” of Hollywood, or that there were no good roles available aside from “concerned grandmother” or “evil stepmother” or any other role that would certainly fail the Bechdel test. Back in 2014 Meryl Streep remarked on our “youth-obsessed” culture, telling People that after she turned 40 in 1989 she was “not offered any female adventurers, or love interests, or heroes, or demons. I was offered witches because I was ‘old’ at 40.”

At least this past year, things have clearly improved for both TV and movies; 4 of the 10 women actors who were nominated for Oscars in 2025 were over the age of 50—including three in the leading actress category.

However, the awards show circuit doesn’t always reflect reality. In 2024 Ms. Magazine bemoaned the dearth of roles for women over 40, citing a study from San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, which found these roles had decreased 6 percent between 2015 and 2022. In their recently released 2024–2025 report, the Center found that women characters have remained younger than their male counterparts (though, as anyone who’s ever watched a teen drama knows, actors will often play younger than they are in real life).

Jay-Z Defends Times Square Casino Bid As Cultural Investment + Says It’s About ‘Strengthening’ Broadway & Creating ‘Real Value’ Within The Community

Jay-Z is doubling down on his love for New York City by investing in what he calls a “world class destination” in the heart of Times Square. He shared his vision in a new interview with City & State New York.

Through Roc Nation, Jay-Z has partnered with SL Green and Caesars to propose a casino at 1515 Broadway.

“New York City is the entertainment capital of the world,” he said. “Caesars Palace Times Square is an extension of culture.”

He believes the project will support the community and Broadway.

“Casino visitors will buy tickets, fill seats, book dinners before shows, and keep hotels full,” he explained. “This project isn’t about taking away from Broadway – it’s about strengthening it.”

Addressing critics, he emphasized responsible gaming programs and investments in arts and public resources.

“Our goal is to create opportunity and ensure this project delivers real value,” he added.

When asked what he loves most about NYC, he said, “The attitude, the culture, the energy. You can’t replicate New York anywhere else.”

Do you think the casino project is a good idea?

Real Estate began their Atlas anniversary tour last night, and it meant the debut of a new guitarist, following the departure of Julian Lynch. Joining the band is James Richardson, a multi-instrumentalist best known for his work on tour and in the studio with MGMT. A representative for Real Estate confirmed that Richardson is a new full-time member of the band.

“You might notice a new and friendly face on stage with us this fall,” Real Estate shared on Instagram. “Please join us in welcoming @jomdry to the Real Estate Family! This dude rocks !!! … and he’s played on some of your favorite records of all time, I’m sure of it.”

Richardson has been a fixture in MGMT since Congratulations, and the band’s Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have spoken fondly of him in interviews with Pitchfork. Beyond his work with MGMT, Richardson has played on Cameron Winter’s Heavy Metal, Snail Mail’s Lush, Cola Boyy’s Prosthetic Boombox, and more.

Julian Lynch joined Real Estate in 2016, following the departure of founding guitarist Matt Mondanile, who was fired after being accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women.

Real Estate began their tour last night in Los Angeles. The North American tour continues into October.
