Cinematographer Kira Kelly on new Jordan Peele production ‘Him’

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Jordan Peele‘s Monkeypaw Productions has become known for making some of the most visually and narratively adventurous studio horror films of the last 10 years, from Peele’s own “Us” and “Nope” to movies the company has shepherded by other directors like Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman.”

Their latest offering, the hallucinatory football freakout “Him,” is one of Monkeypaw’s boldest offerings to date thanks to director Justin Tipping’s audacious merging of sports iconography and horror tropes; his story of a traumatized young athlete whose second chance at greatness turns into a nightmare combines the jittery energy of Gatorade ads with the creeping unease of a Stanley Kubrick or David Lynch film.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Jennifer Lawrence

The cinematographer tasked with translating Tipping’s concepts into vivid imagery is Kira Kelly, an Emmy-nominated (for Ava DuVernay’s documentary “13th”) director of photography whose work here is her best to date and puts “Him” alongside “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another” as one of 2025’s great visual achievements. By finding inspiration in wildly varied reference points ranging from Alejandro Jodorowsky’s “The Holy Mountain” to Nike commercials, Kelly has created a distinctive cinematic language for “Him” that powerfully conveys its young hero’s mental and physical breakdown.

“Early on, it was clear that Justin wanted to do something really different,” Kelly told IndieWire. “When we were shooting, there were scenes where I would look at him and be like, ‘Is this too much?’ And he would be like, ‘No, more.’ He really pushed us.” The key for Kelly was finding a visual language that would put the audience directly in the consciousness of Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers), the rising football star who starts to wonder if he’s at the mercy of evil supernatural forces when he arrives at fading pro Isaiah White’s (Marlon Wayans) compound for a highly unorthodox training session.

“We really tried to play with the idea of levels,” Kelly said, explaining that the lighting and production design were intended to express Cameron’s literal and metaphorical descent once he gets to Isaiah’s compound, a place that seems to spiral down into the ground. “He just keeps going deeper and deeper into this maddening place, and the lighting is very integrated into the location.” Kelly begins Cameron’s journey on the football field with dynamic camerawork and bright lighting, but as he spends more time at the compound, the compositions become more static and oppressive, with locked frames and more chiaroscuro lighting.

“We were going with a lot of graphic frames, a lot of center punching,” Kelly said. “I think I drove my camera operator Scott Dropkin crazy asking him, ‘Okay, are we totally centered?’” Kelly also relied heavily on top light in the film’s early scenes to give the movie an almost religious feeling; then, as Cameron plunges into hell, the halo gives way to more shadows and color combinations — like a beautiful but eerie juxtaposition of greens and blues in a hyperbaric chamber where Cam is confined — that subliminally evoke a sense of unease and danger.

Finding a new cinematic language meant finding new cinematic tools, and Kelly credits collaborators like key grip Rudy Covarrubias and lens technician Dan Sasaki with inventing ingenious solutions to the movie’s myriad technical challenges. For scenes in which Kelly wanted to create a visceral sense of Cam’s energy on the field, for example, the crew created a rig designed to capture the speed of the sports action in an atypical way. “We could have the camera moving as fast as the ball,” Kelly said. “40 miles an hour or something like that.”

Tipping’s desire to see the action from the point of view of the ball led to the creation of the “boomerang” rig. “It was just this crazy amount of truss where we underslung the camera and then used this winch system that let the camera loose so it would fly to the other end,” Kelly said. The camera department also attached RED Komodo cameras to Withers to capture his perspective during intense sports scenes, and at other moments simply attached a football helmet to the lens and had Wayans yell into it to replicate Cam’s point of view.

In terms of lenses, Kelly worked closely with Panavision’s Dan Sasaki, who customized T-series anamorphics to give the cinematographer the unique look she imagined. “He figured out a way to have the lens flares take on the color of whatever light source hit them,” Kelly said. “Historically, with anamorphic, you get a blue flare, and he was able to change the color of that flare.” Sasaki also modified lenses to make the most of Kelly and Tipping’s decision to rely heavily on centered and symmetrical compositions for their emotional effects.

“He created a beautiful fall-off on the sides of the lenses that really lent itself to that center-punching,” Kelly said, adding that the most extreme example of this was a lens Sasaki created that came to be known as the “ghost” lens. “It’s an old D portrait lens that’s 50mm where the center is resolved, but at the sides the bokeh smears in this crazy way.”

That lens is used extensively in a party scene after Cam takes a drink that is most likely spiked and feels his already tenuous grip on reality completely slipping away, one of many sequences in the movie where lenses and lighting are used to put the audience in a state of psychological terror. There’s also a recurring image in the film of Cameron being hit and the camera presenting an impressionistic view of the inside of his head as he suffers a concussion — it’s one of the most horrifying and unique motifs in the movie, and another one that required an unusual technical approach.

“Jordan and Hoyte van Hoytema had just done all of their stereoscope day for night footage in ‘Nope,’ so there was a conversation about whether or not there was a way we could shoot that footage with both a thermal camera and the Alexa 35,” Kelly said. Covarrubias built a rig where a FLIR thermal camera was mounted directly on top of the Alexa, allowing the filmmakers to capture a thermal image that could be seamlessly cut into at moments of impact to show Cam’s concussions.

“It took two ACs, one pulling focus on the FLIR and one pulling focus on the Alexa,” Kelly said. “Our first AC Megan Noche 3D printed a focus ring to hot glue onto it, it was the craziest homemade setup. But once we started seeing how it was all working, it was really exciting.” Kelly experimented with various forms of ice and heat to get varying looks on screen, and in visual effects, more imagery was added — “brains sloshing and all that stuff” — to finalize the harrowing depiction of Cameron’s physical trauma.

“There was a lot of just trying to figure out how to make these images happen,” Kelly said. “Justin created an environment that inspired a lot of out-of-the-box visual storytelling. That made the project really gratifying, especially given what we ended up pulling off with the amount of time we had and the budget. It’s really exciting.”

Universal Pictures will release “Him” in theaters on Friday, September 19.

Production House Vyjayanthi Movies Confirmed Deepika Padukone Being Replaced In The Sequel of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’

A shocking update has been revealed about the highly anticipated sequel to “Kalki 2898 AD”, as the leading lady of the film, Deepika Padukone, will not be a part of the film. The makers of the blockbuster epic confirmed her exit through an official announcement, leaving fans surprised and disappointed. Social media is now buzzing with questions about what led to her departure and who will step into the lead role opposite Prabhas in the sequel.

The production house Vyjayanthi Movies, which backed director Nag Ashwin’s futuristic drama, revealed the news in a statement on X. The post read, “We officially announce that Deepika Padukone will not be part of the sequel to ‘Kalki 2898 AD.’ After much deliberation, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we could not continue our partnership. A project like ‘Kalki’ demands unwavering commitment, and we wish Deepika the very best for her future endeavors.”

Let us tell you that Deepika’s chemistry with Prabhas in the first installment was widely appreciated, and fans were eagerly waiting to see the duo reunite on screen. Her sudden exit has now raised curiosity about the film’s new female lead and the future direction of the franchise. Interestingly, this is not the first major project Deepika has walked away from in 2024. Earlier this year, she also exited Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s “Spirit” after reporting creative differences.

Rumors suggested that Deepika requested an eight-hour work shift and other scheduling accommodations, which the director allegedly found unprofessional. Similar reports had circulated about “Kalki 2898 AD 2,” claiming that Deepika had asked for reduced working hours, a demand said to be a key reason behind her decision to quit the sequel. With Deepika officially stepping away, the spotlight is now on Vyjayanthi Movies to reveal who will replace her and how the film will maintain the momentum of its record-breaking first part.

Nicole Kidman Announces ‘Practical Magic 2’ Has Wrapped Production

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

With a swish of a wand and stir of a cauldron, Practical Magic 2 has officially wrapped production, star Nicole Kidman announced today on Instagram.

The Oscar winner shared a short behind-the-scenes clip of her and co-star Sandra Bullock walking away from the cameras on a sun-soaked meadow. Bullock, also an Academy Award winner, can be heard saying, “Profile shot? Let’s do a profile shot,” as Kidman bursts into laughter and embraces her.

“That’s a wrap on #PracticalMagic2! Thank you to the cast & crew for all your magic ✨,” Kidman captioned the video.

Kidman last commemorated the reunion of the Owens sisters on the first day of production in mid-July, posting a video of the duo filming a scene. “The witches are back,” she captioned the clip on Instagram. “Owens sisters’ first day on set!”

A sequel to the cult classic 1998 original about two polar opposite sisters who are descended from a long line of witches, negotiations for original stars Kidman and Bullock to return as Gillian and Sally Owens, respectively, were first reported in June 2024. Praised for its feminist themes, soundtrack and genre-bending nature, the film followed the two family members and their aunts as they reckoned with the Owens curse, which dooms any man who falls in love with them. At the end of the Warner Bros. pic, the sisters form a quasi-coven with the townsfolk to break the ancient spell, triumphing over the curse and finally being accepted in their community as witches.

The sequel to the spooky movie is slated for release Sept. 18, 2026, with original cast Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing also returning as Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances, the matriarchs who took in Sally and Gillian after their parents died. Meanwhile, newcomers include Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod. Character details for the new faces are under wraps, as Deadline exclusively reported.

Susanne Bier directs the followup from a script by Akiva Goldsman, a co-writer on the original, and Georgia Pritchett (Veep, Succession). Bier has worked with both Bullock and Kidman before, directing 2018’s Birdbox and series The Perfect Couple.

The original film, helmed by Griffin Dunne, was based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name, grossing more than $47 million stateside. Hoffman has since published two prequels to that book, as well as a 2021 sequel called The Book of Magic. Though plot details about Practical Magic 2 are scant, producer Denise Di Novi told Entertainment Weekly last year it would draw heavily from the source material.

Oscar-Winning Harry Potter Production Designer

by jummy84 September 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Stuart Craig, a UK production designer and art director who won Oscars for his work on The English Patient, Dangerous Liaisons and Gandhi, died September 7. He was 83.

Craig’s passing was confirmed via the British Film Designers Guild, which posted a message from BFDG member Neil Lamont on Facebook.

“It is with great sadness that I report that my friend and mentor, Production Designer Stuart Craig, passed away last night, 7th September 2025 aged 83, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease,” wrote Lamont. “Stuart was the UK’s and, most probably, cinemas most-revered film designer … a true giant!”

Craig’s early credits include The Elephant Man, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, Cry Freedom, Chaplin and The Secret Garden. He won his first Oscar in 1983 for Gandhi, and his second in 1989 for Dangerous Liaisons.

In 1997, he won his third Oscar for The English Patient, where he met Lamont.

DEADLINE RELATED VIDEO:

“Stuart and I first worked together on The English Patient, flying to Tunis to join him was one of the most important days of my career,” he wrote. “Straight out of the airport, on a recce of a local derelict, ruined building, 40 degrees, nervous, and I probably did one of the poorest surveys ever on a location. It turned out that we, subsequently, found better places. The experiences I had on this film, not only allowed me to see Stuart’s talent, his beautiful sketches, pencil drawings and vision, but also the way which he conducted himself in all walks of life, in the studio, the car, restaurants. A true gentleman, with grace, kindness and humility.”

Craig would go on to serve as production designer on all of the Harry Potter films and the Fantastic Beasts trilogy.

“I bet that anyone you ask, ‘which designer would you like to work with the most,’ the answer 100% would be Stuart Craig,” wrote Lamont. “Anyone who met him will remember their encounter forever.”

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner launch production company

by jummy84 August 30, 2025

30 August 2025

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner have founded their own production company.

Callum Turner and Dua Lipa recently announced their engagement

The 30-year-old pop star and her 35-year-old fiance have created a new company called TwentyTwo Films Limited, and the couple already have “lots of plan” in place for their joint venture.

A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “Dua and Callum are both very ambitious people and have lots of plans for ventures they want to do together.”

Dua has previously appeared in the movies Barbie and Argylle, and she wants to have more “creative control” over her projects moving forwards.

The loved-up couple already have “loads of ideas” for the long-term future of TwentyTwo Films Limited.

The insider explained: “She has dipped her toe in film before. But if she does further projects, she wants to have more creative control.

“She and Callum have loads of ideas that they think would work. It’s very early days but the wheels are in motion.”

Dua recently revealed that she’s been feeling “happier than ever” after getting engaged.

Speaking to Harper’s BAZAAR magazine’s global ICONS Issue, Dua shared: “I love love. It is a beautiful thing. It’s a really inspiring thing. You find yourself so intensely falling all the time in the best way possible. That vulnerability is so scary, but I feel so lucky to get to feel it.

“I’ve spent a lot of time being guarded or protecting my heart, and so I’m letting go of that feeling and just being like, ‘Okay, if I’m supposed to get hurt, then this is what’s going to happen.’ I have to just allow love.”

Dua explained that she also feels more comfortable than ever talking about her love life.

Despite this, the chart-topping singer acknowledged that “anything that’s very personal is very vulnerable”.

Dua – who has previously dated the likes of Anwar Hadid and Romain Gavras – said: “I’m happier than ever, so it feels like I’m doing a disservice by not talking about it.

“When you’re a public person, anything that’s very personal is very vulnerable. It’s not like I don’t want to share it.”

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Lighting Designer on Keeping Production in LA

by jummy84 August 25, 2025
written by jummy84

I am a Los Angeleno, born and raised, and I admired the entertainment industry even before I was a part of it. I’ve been fortunate to build a successful career in Los Angeles as a Lighting Designer, contributing to some of the most exciting and high-profile projects of the past 35 years. From scripted series to live telecasts to reality competition shows, I’ve worked alongside incredibly talented people, making magical moments. I love what I do, the people I do it with, and the city we call home.

For the past five seasons I’ve served as Lighting Designer on the technicolor explosion of artistry and self-expression that is “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which has been proudly made in Los Angeles since 2009. At a time when productions are increasingly leaving Los Angeles, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has remained firmly planted, holding onto its LA roots and much of the dedicated crew who helped build the iconic show.

Many of us have worked in production for decades. We’ve come up through the ranks, mentored by veterans who shaped this industry and were lighting stages with carbon arcs and tungsten sources. Our crew includes gaffers and key grips whose parents, and even grandparents, were in the industry. We’ve got camera operators who started out as PAs in the early days of reality TV, and passionate, young talent—many making the move to Los Angeles to break into the business— who hope this will be the first of many projects in a lifelong career. We’re the kind of workers who have long formed the backbone of this industry town: generational, skilled, and deeply invested in its future.

The work is hard, the pace is fast, and the expectations are high. Each week “RuPaul’s Drag Race” delivers something spectacular, whether it’s a Broadway-style musical, a scripted acting challenge, a high fashion photo shoot, or a lip sync smackdown for the ages, we’re constantly raising the bar. We are artists who want to create something timeless—a moment that people will remember, and that might even change their lives.

That level of creative ambition is made possible because of LA’s unmatched production ecosystem: the best crews in the business, cutting-edge rental houses, experienced collaborators, versatile sound stages, and reliable industry partners. These local, world-class resources allow us to be bold, flexible, and efficient.

Much of the success of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” can be credited to World of Wonder’s commitment to producing the long-running series in Los Angeles. They’ve proven there is no better place to make award-winning, culturally resonant television than right here at home. Their continued investment in LA’s production community not only helps sustain jobs and businesses, it preserves the legacy of craftsmanship, collaboration, and creative excellence that defines this town.

Production is in LA’s DNA. Let’s keep it that way.

Bonjour, Emily in Paris fans! The hit Netflix series is officially returning for season 5, and filming began earlier this summer on the next chapter of Emily Cooper’s adventures. Main cast members Lily Collins, Ashley Park, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Lucas Bravo and more are reprising their roles, but production paused in late August when Assistant Director Diego Borella suddenly died while working on set. Local Italian news outlets reported that he collapsed from a “sudden heart attack” while preparing to film a final scene at the Hotel Danieli in Venice, Italy.

Filming has been suspended following Borella’s tragic death, according to Il Messaggero.

Hollywood Life has rounded up everything we know so far about the upcoming season of Emily in Paris.

When Does Season 5 of Emily in Paris Come Out?

Netflix announced that season 5 of Emily in Paris will premiere on December 18, 2025.

After the success of Season 4, which ranked No. 1 on Netflix during its premiere, production for the upcoming season is scheduled to begin in May 2025.

Will Emily in Paris Take Place In Rome?

Season 5 officially began production in Rome this May, with filming continuing in Italy over the summer before the cast and crew return to Paris later in the season.

At the end of Season 4, Emily relocates to Rome to help open a new Agence Grateau office and spend time with her new love interest, Marcello (played by Eugenio Franceschini). Still, series creator Darren Star confirmed that the show’s title isn’t changing. “Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome… It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris,” he told Tudum by Netflix.

Collins echoed the excitement during a Good Morning America interview on September 16, 2024, saying, “We got to explore Rome, and I’m really hoping that in season five, we get to explore more of Italy.” She added, “We had the best time. The whole cast felt a little bit like Emily did in season one, running around the city wide-eyed, with everything feeling so exciting.”

Emily in Paris Season 5 Cast

Season 5 of Emily in Paris will bring back many fan favorites, with a few notable changes. Collins returns as Emily Cooper, alongside Park (Mindy), Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie), Lucas Bravo (Gabriel), Samuel Arnold (Julien), Bruno Gouery (Luc), William Abadie (Antoine), and Laviscount (Alfie).

Franceschini, who played Marcello in Season 4, has been promoted to a recurring role. Meanwhile, Camille Razat (Camille) will not return as a series regular, as her character’s storyline wrapped up in Season 4.
