The new CBS reality TV series features a group of contestants competing as opening acts for legendary country music star Keith Urban on his national tour.

‘The Chair Company’ Scores Strong Premiere Ratings for HBO

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

A good number of viewers joined Tim Robinson in trying to figure out what’s happening with The Chair Company. Its Sunday lead-in, Task, is also drawing solid ratings heading into its finale.

HBO says 1.4 million viewers watched The Chair Company’s debut over three days on the HBO cable channel and HBO Max — making it the biggest comedy series premiere for HBO in more than five years (since Avenue 5 in early 2020). The show stars Robinson as a guy who gets drawn into a rabbit hole after a workplace mishap.

Robinson also co-created the well-reviewed series with his I Think You Should Leave and Detroiters collaborator Zach Kanin.

Task, meanwhile, has grown its audience each week since its Sept. 7 premiere. HBO says the penultimate episode drew 4 million cross-platform viewers over three days, the highest tally yet and 32 percent ahead of of the show’s premiere audience of just above 3 million.

The series premiere has grown to 10 million viewers over the past six-plus weeks, and Task as a whole is averaging 6.7 million viewers to date across platforms, HBO says. That’s right in line with series creator Brad Ingelsby’s last HBO show, Mare of Easttown, which at the same time during its run stood at 6.8 million viewers. Mare went on to amass 13 million viewers per episode in HBO’s 90-day measurement window.

As is usually the case with HBO shows, both The Chair Company and Task have brought in the great majority of their viewers from streaming on HBO Max. The Chair Company’s on-air premiere Sunday scored 124,000 viewers, or about 9 percent of its three-day total. Task drew 401,000 viewers Sunday, 10 percent of the episode’s three-day tally.

Square Eyes Acquires ‘The Kartli Kingdom’ Ahead of IDFA World Premiere

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Vienna-based sales outlet Square Eyes has secured international rights to “The Kartli Kingdom,” directed by Tamar Kalandadze and Julien Pebrel. The film is set to world premiere in the International Competition at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), taking place Nov. 13-23.

“Kartli” refers both to Georgia’s medieval kingdom and a Tbilisi sanatorium sheltering refugees from the 1990s war in Abkhazia, meant as temporary but lasting 30 years. The collapsing building became a recreated “country”: a farm, garden, terraces, and rooms where old VHS tapes revive memories of Abkhazia, their lost paradise. Through Tamuna, Irma and others, the film reveals the exile’s trauma and shared resilience. Even if time seems frozen in Kartli’s walls, nothing stays the same.

“Our film narrates a community’s story through the shelter of Kartli: past, present and imagined future, lending gentleness, violence, sadness, memories, and humor,” Kalandadze and Pebrel commented. “These layers of time merge in editing, combining image and sound materials. Memories, words and tales of Kartli’s past shape its inhabitants’ lives, forming foundational myths. These stories, like an underground stream, resurface during conversations, interrupting scenes we filmed. Archival footage adds bursts of collective memory, showing the 1992 war’s impact on the community.”

“We love how the film gives us a glimpse inside the walls of the Kartli sanatorium, where the collective memory of the 1992 war in Abkhazia and the current lives of the residents mix into a touching and poetic documentary,” stated Wouter Jansen, CEO of Square Eyes. “The mix of these two narratives makes the film a perfect match for our catalog.”

“The Kartli Kingdom” is produced by Ketevan Kipiani for Giorgia’s Sakdoc Film and Jean-Baptiste Bonnet for Habilis Productions in France. Square Eyes is in charge of world sales.

Sydney’ Season 3 Premiere? Boss Explains Resignation (Exclusive)

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the NCIS: Sydney Season 3 premiere “Gut Instinct.”]

NCIS: Sydney is making us wait a bit longer to find out who that mystery woman was waiting for Blue (Mavournee Hazel) at the end of the Season 2 finale. In fact, the Season 3 premiere introduces a new mystery about the forensic scientist.

When the new season begins, Blue has resigned, having sent in a video. Doc (William McInnes) doesn’t buy that’s all there is to it. Meanwhile, JD (Todd Lasance) has signed up for a dating site, giving DeShawn (Sean Sagar) and Evie (Tuuli Narkle) plenty to mock him for (especially with those photos), and making things a bit awkward with Mackey (Olivia Swann).

Below, showrunner Morgan O’Neill breaks down the premiere and teases what’s ahead for Blue, Mackey and JD, and more.

How long is it going to take before Mackey realizes that the therapist in the psych eval was right and she can’t just ignore what happened?

Morgan O’Neill: You’ve hit on the overarching theme of the third season of NCIS: Sydney, and the reason I think it’s such a cool framing device for our entire season is that we all have to deal with that at some point, right? I mean, it’s a really human revelation that you have to deal with your past or your past is going to deal with you. And Mackey being stubborn, it’s going to take her longer than it takes most people. But one of the things that she has in her corner is her team, and in particular JD, because JD is that kind of sounding board for her. And you’ll see at the end of the first episode, they have a moment where they kind of acknowledge each other’s failings and strengths all at once. And so I feel like with the benefit of the team and a little bit of time, Mackey will eventually come to realize that you can’t outrun your past, but it’s going to take a few bumps along the way. That’s just the nature of Mackey. That’s how she rolls.

How is she going to deal with that?

She refuses to deal with it in an obvious way, and then she has to deal with the ramifications of not dealing with it. And so her past comes to her and in a really confronting way. Like a lot of us, she’s not going to deal with the problem until she has no option but to deal with the problem. And that’s when the problem has come to her and is sitting right on her doorstep. So, without spoiling what happens, suffice it to say that it becomes a pretty big deal for Mackey, and in not dealing with it, she drags the whole team into it.

There’s this mystery of what happened to Blue. What can you say about what’s going on with her and why she sent that resignation video?

Well, as we know, the end of the second season of NCIS: Sydney ends with Blue coming home after Darwin,  and there is a strange lady sitting in her living room, and from the expression on Blue’s face, it’s pretty clear that she’s an unwelcome visitor. And then we open in Season 3, Blue’s no longer there, and we work out that she’s resigned and everyone’s a little bent out of shape by it because she’s such a beloved member of the team and they misconstrue the arrival of Trigger [Claude Jabbour] is somehow the replacement for Blue, which clearly he is not, but it feels especially to Doc that something’s hinky, that this is not the way Blue would’ve departed if she had departed of her own volition. And so he refuses to accept that she has simply decided to move on and send in a video resignation. And he’s probably, I dare say, right to think that that doesn’t all add up. And the team is doing their best, obviously, to be professional and to be grownups and to sort of put a happy face on the whole thing — she may have moved on to something that she’s more excited by — but I think deep down, all of them know that something is not as it should be. And when we get to Episode 2, we’ll realize why.

JD signed up for a dating site. The humor in that has already started. Are we going to see him going on dates, hear about them, and see him decide it’s not for him? How much comedy are you getting out of that?

A lot is the short answer. JD is such a beautiful character in my view. There’s a level of self-deprecation that makes him so appealing to me, I think, and to a larger audience. He has that ability to find humor in his own circumstances, which I find a very appealing quality. But what it also does in Australia is it puts an enormous target on your back because if you’re willing to acknowledge that life is strange, then the rest of the team is going to come down to you like a ton of bricks and they do.

The reality is, for JD, he’s found himself in a situation where he’s kind of been in denial for the first two seasons of the show about his emotional situation. Like a lot of people going through those really tricky life-altering events, he’s hoped against hope that somehow it gets itself back together again or the ship is set back on course or whatever, but it’s not. He’s living in his friend’s garage, and it’s been two years, and he’s got to get his s**t together. So I think the events of Darwin have probably shaken him out of that stasis, and he’s decided that whatever deeply buried, repressed feelings he may have for his friend and colleague, Michelle Mackey, he’s not going to succumb to them, and he’s going to do the exact opposite. He’s going to fill that void with whatever he can. And as it is in the 21st century, that’s kind of online dating. So he jumps in boots and all, but he’s really, let’s be honest, ill-equipped to be playing in that pond as his dating profile photographs will tell us.

Daniel Asher Smith/Paramount+

It’s a stopgap measure at best, and it obviously provides a huge amount of comedy for our team. But what it’s really telling me as an audience, I suppose, is here is the guy desperately trying to be professional. He’s trying to keep things tidy in the workplace because Darwin has probably brought out a whole bunch of emotions that he feels are unhelpful in a team environment. And so I guess he’s overreacting, and his overreaction is in the form of going on a dating site. And having been on dating sites myself, it’s the wild west out there, I can tell you.

How does Mackey feel about that? Because we already get the bit of awkwardness about it in the premiere, and it feels like they both know how the other one might feel, and it’s just like, let’s just not acknowledge it.

Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head. You’ve got to remember, these are two charismatic, clever, empathetic, courageous, attractive, and single people working shoulder to shoulder for 70 hours a week. That’s a combustible situation, but they’re also super professional, and they’re the leaders of this team; they’re kind of notionally mom and dad for the rest of the squad, and acknowledging that they may have feelings for one another would be totally counterproductive to the team environment. So, they try and be as professional as they can, but they’re humans. And so it’s an imperfect way of wallpapering over what might be going on underneath.

bitchy | Amal Clooney wore a pink Tamara Ralph to the LFF ‘Jay Kelly’ premiere

by jummy84 October 13, 2025
written by jummy84

The BFI London Film Festival has been humming along for the past week. There have been some good premieres, but weirdly, most of the premiere fashion has kind of sucked. This is my justification for not covering most of the premieres, my bad. But these days, you can always count on Amal Clooney to bring some showgirl glamour. Amal’s showgirl aesthetic predates Taylor Swift’s by a good eight years, in fact. In any case, here are some photos from the big Jay Kelly premiere at the BFI LFF. I’m also including photos of Noah Baumbach (the writer-director) and Greta Gerwig, who wore an incredibly unfortunate suit. Sidenote: it’s very funny to see this film making the rounds at film festivals, because it looks like the dreck that came out of a dying studio with six screenwriters. They’re seriously pushing George for Best Actor, I guess. I predict a Golden Globe nomination and nothing else.

As for Amal’s showgirl look, this is Tamara Ralph Couture. Amal surprisingly loves pinks, and while this paler pink doesn’t look bad on her, she definitely looks better in a more saturated color. I’m not crazy about the tiered skirt, but that’s not specific to this look (I just don’t like tiered skirts). I also feel sorry for tall women – they should be able to wear feathers without anyone making a Big Bird comment. But yeah, the feathers are very Big Bird. Also: Amal recently took eight inches off her hair (according to Vogue). It looks SO MUCH healthier.

Meanwhile, George recently confirmed that everyone is on board for Ocean’s 14, the fourth film in a franchise which most people forgot about. Back in the day, I liked Ocean’s 11. I remember thinking Ocean’s 12 had a terrible script, and I remember very little of Ocean’s 13. Well, George claims that Julia Roberts, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle are all on board for the fourth film, and that they have a “great” script. He also said: “We just got the budget approved at Warner Bros. and we’re trying to set up. It’s just scheduling, so it’s just setting a start date for us. Probably start in about nine or 10 months, shooting.” Oh, good. Brad Pitt the (credibly accused) domestic abuser, back together with George Clooney the ratf–ker.

PS… Someone pointed out that George has been wearing lifts these days and now I can’t unsee it.

Star Trek fans may have said goodbye to two of the Paramount+ series in the franchise in the last two years (Picard in 2023, Discovery in 2024), but there are new additions still to come. One of them is Starfleet Academy, and now, thanks to the panel at 2025 New York Comic Con on Saturday, October 11, we know when it will premiere: January 15. We also now the full roll-out schedule for their first season.

During the panel, Paramount+ also released a new trailer, which you can watch above, introducing the cadets, teasing interactions between Holly Hunter’s captain and chancellor and Paul Giamatti’s villain, and more.

Plus, Stephen Colbert shared in a video, which you can watch below, that he will be the voice of Starfleet Academy’s Digital Dean of Students, giving daily announcements to the students and alerting them of anything that needs their immediate attention.

This new series was first said to be in development in February 2022. Just over a year later, it was announced that Paramount+ had picked it up to series (in March 2023).

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!” co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau said in a statement at the time.

“We are excited to introduce Star Trek fans to a whole new generation of Starfleet officers in training as they navigate the rigors of the Academy and the brink of adulthood in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” added Domenic DiMeglio, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Data, Paramount Streaming. “Introducing new characters and compelling storylines, this all-new original series will serve as a fantastic addition to the franchise and Paramount+, bringing new generations of viewers and long-term Star Trek fans alike together to enjoy the next chapter in the iconic Star Trek universe.”

The series has yet to premiere, but it has already been renewed! Below, we’re taking a look at everything we know about the latest Trek series. Keep checking back for updates!

When will Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premiere?

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1 will premiere on Thursday, January 15, 2026, with the first two episodes. The rest of the 10-episode season will be released weekly on Thursdays, with the finale dropping on March 12.

What is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy?

The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. This young group of cadets will come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Who’s in the Starfleet Academy cast?

Holly Hunter stars as Nahla Ake, the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy and Captain of the U.S.S. Athena, who also happens to be a long-lived half-Lanthanite.

“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” said Kurtzman and Landau in a statement.  “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of Star Trek.”

Paul Giamatti has been cast in the recurring role of part Klingon, part Tellarite Nus Braka, the season’s villain with an ominous past connected to one of the cadets.

Said Kurtzman and Landau, “Sometimes you’re lucky enough to discover that one of the greatest actors alive is also a huge Star Trek fan, and meeting Paul was one of those miraculous moments for us. The sheer delight with which he dove in on Starfleet Academy is only surpassed by the gratitude we feel about him joining our incredible cast.”

Discovery‘s Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), and Oded Fehr (Admiral Vance) and Voyager‘s Robert Picardo (The Doctor) are reprising their roles. Notaro and Picardo join as series regulars, and Fehr and Wiseman join as guest stars.

And playing cadets are Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, and Sandro Rosta.

Rosta is Caleb Mir, an orphan with a troubled past – and unlikely Starfleet cadet. Diané is Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon cadet who dreams of becoming a medical officer. Brooks is Series Acclimation Mil, a.k.a. Sam, the first of her kind to ever attend Starfleet Academy. Hawkins is Darem Reymi, an aspiring captain from a wealthy home world. Shepard is Genesis Lythe, an admiral’s daughter determined to make her own name in Starfleet. Steiner is Tarima Sadal, a Betazoid and daughter of the president of Betazed.

Gina Yashere recurs as Commander Lura Thok, a Klingon/Jem’Hadar hybrid who is the chancellor’s First Officer and Cadet Master.

And at New York Comic Con 2024, it was announced that Tatiana Maslany will be a recurring special guest star in Season 1. No character details have been revealed.

Is there a Starfleet Academy trailer?

Yes, and more than one! In addition to the one at the top, there’s also the trailer that was released at 2025 San Diego Comic-Con. It offers a look at the series’ iconic campus in San Francisco plus the new starship and integral part of the Starfleet Academy campus, the U.S.S. Athena.

“You are all the first Academy class to return to our campus in San Francisco after more than 120 years,” Captain Ake tells the cadets. “Some of you are here for your families, some for yourselves. Together, you are the best and the brightest from across the galaxy, a tapestry that is Starfleet. You will learn the skills that shaped our greatest officers. Like them, we’ll ask you to give more of yourselves than you know you have. To dream without limitations, whatever challenges came before today led you to this moment. You, here now, you weave together the future, so go out and seek, explore, boldly go where no one has gone before. It is my great honor to welcome you all to Starfleet Academy.”

Be sure to watch the video — below — to the end for a look at Giamatti’s villain, plus check throughout to see the names of legendary characters (the James T. Kirk Pavilion is just one instance!).

Will there be a Starfleet Academy Season 2?

Yes! At New York Comic Con 2024, the series was given an early renewal for Season 2. The news came as the show was still in production on Season 1 in Toronto.

Who’s behind the new series?

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive produce the series alongside executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber. The series’ premiere episode is written by Gaia Violo and directed by Alex Kurtzman. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Plus, Jonathan Frakes, Trek legend and director extraordinaire, told TV Insider he’s “[looking] forward to Starfleet Academy” when discussing his work behind the camera still to come in May 2024.
