Haq Movie Review: Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi Excel in This Compelling Film

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

The real case that inspired Haq stems from the landmark Shah Bano judgment of 1985, a legal earthquake that redefined how India understood women’s rights, secular law and religious identity. When a divorced Muslim woman sought maintenance under Section 125 of the CrPC, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution’s promise of equality was not contingent upon personal law. This ruling forced India to confront a hard question, whether justice could be selectively interpreted based on religion, and whether a Muslim woman was entitled to the same dignity, respect and protection as any other woman in this country. Haq, based on Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat Ki Beti, reinterprets that battle for contemporary India, where these same arguments still quietly simmer under political speech, domestic space, and cultural caution.

In the film, Yami Gautam Dhar plays Shazia Bano, the fictionalised Shah Bano figure, and her performance is the spine of Haq. She plays Shazia not as a symbol, but as a woman who has lived, loved, hurt, doubted, questioned, and yet stands to fight. There is restraint here, but also ferocity, an emotional fluency that never slips into artifice. Her courtroom scenes have a rare clarity. She fights not with chest-thumping melodrama but with lived conviction. The shifting weight in her shoulders, the hesitations in her voice, the quiet with which she absorbs pain, all of that adds a truthful fragility beneath her courage. It is easily one of Yami’s strongest, most commanding screen turns.

Emraan Hashmi, as Abbas Khan, is equally compelling, playing a man shaped by privilege, belief and inherited power structures. He is not painted as a cardboard bigot; he is someone who has never questioned the script handed to him, and that is what makes his downfall tragic instead of theatrical. The more he clings to his ego, the more the system crumbles beneath him. Vartika Singh, as the second wife, leaves a striking impact. She is not reduced to glamour; her arc is empathetic, sensitive, and beautifully textured. Her confrontation moment opposite Yami is one of the film’s most emotionally loaded scenes. And Sheeba Chaddha, as the supporting lawyer on Yami’s side, injects gravity, wit and an unwavering steadiness; she knows exactly how to play strength in silence. Danish Hussain too makes an impact as Yami’s supportive father.

Much of this impact works because the writing is sharp, intelligent and deeply internalised. Reshu Nath’s screenplay understands the emotional minefield of faith versus constitutional rights without turning the narrative into an academic lecture. She builds conflict through spaces of doubt, lived contradiction and internal bias, not just external provocation. And Suparn S Varma’s direction keeps the storytelling grounded and balanced. He refuses sensationalism, he resists easy villainy, and he allows silences to speak. His directorial hand ensures Haq is not a polemic, it is a lived human drama.

While a more non-linear structure could have given the story even greater depth, what Haq achieves is still powerful, it centres the Indian woman’s agency over her life and her choices, irrespective of religious identity. It reminds men that responsibility cannot be abandoned through doctrine. It highlights how law must protect the vulnerable without fear. Haq calls for empathy not uproar.

Haq is a reminder that clarity, reason and moral courage can indeed be cinematic. Watch it for its sincerity, for its grace, for its argument but above all, watch it for the performances that give this battle a beating, breathing human heart. And watch it because it believes that the Indian woman, regardless of faith, deserves the Constitution as her shield, not the mercy of men.

The Jonas Brothers — Kevin, Joe, and Nick — are set to bring holiday cheer to fans with their upcoming film A Very Jonas Christmas Movie. Disney+ released the official trailer on Monday, offering a glimpse into the heartwarming and humorous story that explores family, fame, and festive spirit. Written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, and directed by Jessica Yu, the film will premiere on November 14 on Disney+ and Hulu.

The trailer opens with the trio wrapping up a concert in London before planning to fly home to New York for Christmas. While Nick and Kevin chat with their wives, Priyanka Chopra and Danielle Jonas, in sweet cameo appearances over video calls, Joe decides to unwind at a local bar. There, he confides in a stranger, admitting, “As the Jonas Brothers, we’re great. But as brothers, whatever magic was there is just… dead.” Their holiday plans take a chaotic turn when they discover their private jet has been destroyed, leaving them stranded and forced to spend Christmas together in unexpected circumstances.

Alongside the brothers’ heartwarming journey of reconnection, the film also explores Joe’s budding romance with Lucy, played by Chloe Bennet. Their charming date scenes show Joe telling his brothers, “We had a connection,” only for Kevin to tease, “How many connections have you had this month?” and Nick to add, “Joe can’t count that high.”

“Being with Mabel, it’s an honest encounter with life.” Roadside Attractions / Lionsgate have revealed the first official trailer for a wonderful film based on a true story called H is for Hawk, adapted from the book of the same name. This premiered at the 2025 Telluride & London Film Festivals this fall, and is expected to open in theaters starting in December during the middle of the awards season. H is for Hawk follows Helen, who, after the sudden death of her father, loses herself in the memories of their time birding & exploring the natural world together and turns the ancient art of falconry—rooted in European tradition—training a wild goshawk (more info) named Mabel to navigate her profound loss. But as she teaches Mabel to hunt & fly free, Helen discovers how deeply she has neglected her own emotions and life. And that she must learn to fly, too. What begins as an act of endurance transforms into an intimate journey of resilience and healing. The film stars Claire Foy as Helen, and Brendan Gleeson as her father, along with Sam Spruell, Josh Dylan, Lindsay Duncan, and Denise Gough. This looks like a beautiful film about a very beautiful bird.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Philippa Lowthorpe’s film H is for Hawk, direct from YouTube:

Intro from the London Film Festival: “When Cambridge academic Helen’s (Claire Foy) father dies, the grief sends her spiralling into an abyss. In an effort to process her loss, she retreats from the human world to train a fearsome Northern goshawk. Foy gives an exceptional, career-best performance as Helen, while Charlotte Bruus Christensen’s cinematography & Sarah Finlay’s production design help director Philippa Lowthorpe access the gravity and emotion of this story.” H is for Hawk is directed by British filmmaker / theater director Philippa Lowthorpe, director of the films Swallows and Amazons and Misbehaviour previously, plus theater work and episodes of “The Crown”, “The Third Day”, & “Willow” most recently. The screenplay is written by Emma Donoghue and Philippa Lowthorpe. Based on the book of the same name written by Helen MacDonald. Produced by Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. This first premiered at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival earlier this year. Roadside Attractions will release Lowthorpe’s H is for Hawk film in select US theaters this December 2025, and it also opens in January 2026 in the UK. Look good?

“Let it bro, let it bro, let it bro.” This looks so exceptionally cheesy. Disney+ has released an official trailer for a very cringe Christmas movie called A Very Jonas Christmas Movie, a holiday adventure comedy streaming later this month. They haven’t really made any new Jonas Bros movies in a while, but here we go, reminding us they still exist. Three famous brothers race against time and face mounting challenges during a chaotic journey from London to New York, desperate to make it home in time for Christmas with their loved ones. This musical comedy stars (obviously) the Jonas Brothers – Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas, & Nick Jonas – along with Chloe Bennet, Billie Lourd, Laverne Cox, K.J. Apa, Andrew Barth Feldman, Andrea Martin, Kenny G 🎷, Justin Tranter, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, Danielle Jonas, & Randall Park. This seems to be a Jonas / Disney+ riff on the classic Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, but they have no on screen chemistry and the jokes are really, really bad. Have a look anyway though you’ve been warned.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Jessica Yu’s A Very Jonas Christmas, direct from YouTube:

A Very Jonas Christmas Movie Poster

In A Very Jonas Christmas Movie, Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas face a series of escalating obstacles as they struggle to make it from London to New York in time to spend Christmas with their families. The screenplay is written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger. It’s produced by Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas, Nick Jonas, Adam Fishbach, Spencer Berman, Scott Morgan, Isaac Aptaker, Elizabeth Berger. With music by Justin Tranter. Made by 20th Television & Disney Television. Disney will debut Jessica Yu’s A Very Jonas Christmas movie streaming on Disney+ starting November 14th, 2025 coming soon this fall. Anyone want to watch this?

“Every character he meets will start adding a little bit more color into his life.” This looks so delightful. Searchlight Pictures has debuted a new promo featurette for the heartfelt film titled Rental Family, made by the filmmaker known as “Hikari” who also directed episodes of the series “Beef” & the film 37 Seconds. Rental Family already premiered at TIFF a few months ago and opens in theaters later in November this fall. Discover the joy of unexpected connections. A lonely American actor living in Tokyo starts working for a Japanese “rental family” company to play stand-in roles in other people’s lives. Along his journey, he finds surprising connections and unexpected joys within his built-in family. This stars Oscar winner Brendan Fraser, along with Takehiro Hira, Mari Yamamoto, Shannon Gorman, & Akira Emoto. This fun promo focuses on explaining the story and the concept it explores – the idea that in Tokyo, Japan you can just rent a person for whatever – to be your friend, your boyfriend, your family member. I’m really looking forward to watching the film. I think this very wholesome, uplifting story is what we could use more of now.

Here’s the “Building a New Family” featurette for Hikari’s film Rental Family, on Searchlight’s YouTube:

You can rewatch the first official trailer for Hikari’s Rental Family movie right here for even more footage.

Set against modern-day Tokyo, Rental Family follows an American actor (Oscar winner Brendan Fraser) who struggles to find his purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese “rental family” agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his new clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that soon blur the lines between performance and reality. Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the quiet beauty of human connection. Rental Family is directed by the Japanese filmmaker known as Hikari (aka Mitsuyo Miyazaki), director of the film 37 Seconds previously, plus episodes of the series “Beef” from A24. The screenplay is written by Stephen Blahut and Hikari. Produced by Julia Lebedev, Eddie Vaisman, Shin Yamaguchi, and Hikari. This is premiering at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival this fall. Searchlight will then debut Hikari’s Rental Family in select US theaters starting on November 21st, 2025 coming soon this fall. Who’s planning to watch this?

The First Movie Shot in the Rohingya Language

The First Movie Shot in the Rohingya Language

by jummy84 November 3, 2025
written by jummy84

The failure of the the law to protect people who need it, particularly refugees, has long been a subject of director Akio Fujimoto’s work. His “Passage of Life” sees an undocumented Burmese become torn apart in Tokyo after circumstances force them to uproot themselves again and move to Myanmar, where the children have never lived, having been born and raised Japanese. 2020’s “Across the Sea” concerns the exploitation of foreign workers, as it follows a trio of Vietnamese women working in Japan who are unable to get hospital treatment after their employers confiscates their passports.

“Lost Land” is Fujimoto’s third link in this powerful chain of dramas concerning the extreme hostility of the establishment towards displaced people, this time focusing on the Rohingya, an Islamic people effectively without a country following genocide in Myanmar. The film concerns what it feels like to have no floor beneath one’s feet; it’s a film in constant, jarring, elliptical forward motion as it charts the journey of a Rohingya family from Bangladesh to Malaysia. (It also feels of a piece with the Tokyo International Film Festival competition title “Mother Bhumi,” also interested in the region’s history, particularly towards the “various ethnic groups that were embittered against each other by the dictums of British rule.”)

HEDDA, from left: Tessa Thompson, Nina Hoss, Imogen Poots, 2025. ph: Parisa Taghizadeh /© Amazon MGM Studios /Courtesy Everett Collection

Fujimoto’s film quickly leaves the small comforts of home, as it watches children (real life siblings Muhammad Shofik Rias Uddin and Shomira Rias Uddin) play hide-and-seek before their aunt and uncle, frantically pack for their emigration; they immediately have to make unpleasant choices in leaving behind what material possessions they have in order to better care for the kids. The older sister, Somira — aged nine — is quickly and tragically forced to grow up in the space of a week as she finds herself responsible for her four-year-old brother Shafi during this harrowing exodus. Boat captains bark at the families to give up their phones and shut down what little expression the passengers can muster (one man sings “I wonder when I can return to our home country”). Later in the journey the family run afoul of smugglers in Thailand, which leads to an even more desperate situation as the children have to fend for themselves.

Fujimoto shoots in an almost documentary-like, fly-on-the-wall style from the very beginning, but this isn’t to say that the film is cold or analytical in its depiction of this story. The camera often orbits the children from their point of view, highlighting what they see and feel (such as the claustrophobia of the boat they board to Malaysia), and the flight-or-survival instincts they’re forced to learn. Fujimoto deliberately makes the camera operator feel present in the scene being depicted as a kind of invisible witness: In some moments you feel the cameraperson stand up along with the characters, or in one scene where the children steal some bamboo out of desperation, they feel present as they run with them. The plight of the Rohingya is often discussed in terms of its scale, so Fujimoto’s visual efforts to pare things down to a human level feel incredibly meaningful.

The director pieces the film together in elliptical fashion. It starts with title cards announcing “Day One” and “Day Two,” but then suddenly skips ahead to “Day Eight” and then “Day Fourteen” as time begins slipping. A story from Somira’s aunt about a mango tree which survived the burning of their village is met with the response of a dreamlike montage of the fire, narrated with a prayer for lost souls from the Qur’an. That sequence then slips to show that a passenger on the boat has died, specifically an old man who affirms that “compared to our past, this is nothing.” The torment of “Lost Land” is perpetual, never aestheticizing misery but rather operating in the sense that it mourns for those in the stories relayed to the director (Fujimoto worked directly with Rohingya people in the making of the film, which is notably the first to use the Rohingya language). Crucially, the tragedies of the film don’t come from a sense of the filmmaker’s cynicism, but from compassion.

That feeling is made clear in a sequence that’s practically shot like the testimonials in a doc: a montage of Rohingya refugees discussing the dreams they’ll achieve once they reach Malaysia. Those dreams include opening a car business, becoming a teacher, or in the case of the children, buying shoes and a hat. The film feels at its sharpest when the main family is embedded with other groups of refugees, which allows it to function as a window into a series of wider stories both about what the Rohingya refugees are forced to endure in their search for a home, as well as the outright hostility of the police towards them in various countries. Though interested and in some cases hopeful for its characters in rare moments of kindness and charity, there’s no magical thinking to be found here, as the tragic final notes of the film’s ending linger painfully even as one character clings to the memory of the aunt’s mango tree, as though to make the point that while the sharing of stories can provide some kind of personal salvation, that salvation can only go so far.

Grade: B+

“Lost Land” premiered at the 2025 Tokyo International Film Festival. It is currently seeking U.S. distribution.

Our Editor Tested the Sundays Furniture Movie Night Sofa

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

I’ve recently become obsessed with couch shopping—specifically tracking down the perfect “cloud couch.” One TikTok led to another, and before I knew it, I was deep in a rabbit hole of research. After watching countless videos, one in particular stood out to me: the cult-favorite Movie Night Sofa from Sundays Furniture.

If you’re not familiar, the Vancouver-based brand was founded in 2019 by four friends with backgrounds in furniture design—named in celebration of Sunday mornings at home. Every piece is made to last, focusing on durability, timeless design, and real-life functionality (not just aesthetics). They even recently launched a sister company, Hetta, too.

As I’ve been testing the company’s Movie Night 3-Piece Modular Sofa for the past month, here’s my honest review.

The Movie Night Sofa Review

The first video I saw of the couch was from Devin Raimo, who started off by saying, “So, I get asked all the time how I keep my couch so white with two dogs… the trick is to buy a washable couch.” That instantly caught my attention.

I’ve always wanted a white sectional, but as someone who avoids wearing white clothes (because every single time I do, I somehow end up with a stain), I was nervous. The idea of a washable white couch felt like a game-changer—and that’s exactly what made me want the Sundays Movie Night Sofa.

The best part—aside from how comfortable it is—is the material. Sundays’ signature LiveLife performance fabric is stain-resistant, moisture-repellent, and comes with fully removable, washable slipcovers, so I don’t have to worry about spills on the all-white upholstery.

When it came to choosing a color, I knew I wanted that classic “cloud couch” look, and after debating between Cream Linen and Brie, I decided on Brie.

Sundays Furniture Movie Night Couch.

The Movie Night Couch is Sundays’ best-selling item, and it’s easy to see why. It has deep, sink-in seats, oversized, cloud-like cushions, and a design that’s ideal for movie nights (as the name clearly suggests). I wanted a couch that actually felt cozy to relax on—and it’s exactly that.

After a couple of weeks of using it, my partner literally said to me, “It’s the best couch I’ve ever experienced.” I love it so much—the only con is that I wish I had more space to turn it into a sectional.

That being said, it’s fully modular, so you can really configure it to fit your space. If I move to a bigger apartment—or out of New York into a home—I can easily add on to it. I currently have the 3-piece sofa, but I’d love to add an ottoman or more seats later. For smaller NYC apartments, the two-seater is also a popular choice.

The couch comes in two seat depths: standard and large. I went with the standard, which is already really deep, but the large is also an option if you want an extra lounge-y feel.

Overall, the Movie Night Sofa lives up to the hype. See all the details below, and shop the couch for yourself.

Colors

If you’re torn on which color to get, like I was, Sundays offers free swatches so you can find the fabric that feels right for you. You can order them directly from the website under the “Order Free Swatches” section on the product pages.

Care Instructions

Water-based liquids will literally bead off, so you can easily clean them up with a paper towel. For tougher stains, you can use mild soap and water or remove the slipcovers to wash them. It’s recommended that if you machine wash them, you do so on a cold, gentle cycle—or do dry cleaning instead.

Price

The Movie Night collection starts at $2580, and the 3-piece modular with the standard seat depth is $3,790.

Delivery

The sofa came with free delivery and white-glove in-home assembly, which was truly seamless. On delivery day, the team helped me decide where to place the couch, set it up, and removed all packaging—at no extra charge.

Returns

If the couch isn’t the right fit for you, you can return it in its original condition within 30 days for a $150 fee.
