Cardiologist explains heart attacks are deadlier in women than men, highlights ‘gender gap’ in heart health

Heart disease is often perceived as a ‘man’s disease,’ but in reality, it is the leading cause of death among women. Yet, many symptoms in women are overlooked, misinterpreted, or misdiagnosed, partly because standard tests and treatments have historically been based on male patterns. From hormonal changes and stress to lifestyle and genetic factors, a wide range of elements influence women’s heart health – making awareness, early detection, and gender-specific care crucial for prevention and survival.

Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a cardiologist and heart transplant surgeon, specialising in advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support, working with Baptist Memorial Health care, is raising awareness about women’s heart health, highlighting that heart disease is the leading cause of death among women – yet it remains largely overlooked and underdiagnosed. In an Instagram video shared on September 21, the cardiologist outlines eight facts about women’s heart health and emphasises that many of these risks go unnoticed due to medical ignorance, often resulting in misdiagnoses and preventable deaths. He also talks about symptoms, risk factors and ways to stay healthy.

Prevalence of heart disease fatalities

According to Dr Yaranov, “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women – yet many still think it’s a “man’s disease.” It’s time to change that!” He also mentions that it is the biggest health concern in women, which is frequently overlooked.

Heart attack symptoms

Dr Yaranov stresses that women usually do not experience the “classic” heart attack symptoms, which are common in men and regarded as the norm. He explains, “Instead of crushing chest pain, many feel nausea, fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath – often leading to misdiagnosis.”

Heart attack fatalities

The cardiologist points out that heart attacks can be deadlier in women, as compared to men. He explains, “Women are more likely to die within the first year of a heart attack than men, partly because symptoms go unrecognized or untreated.”

Detecting heart disease

According to the cardiologist, “Plaque builds up differently in women’s arteries, making heart disease harder to detect.” Standard heart disease tests were designed according to the patterns of men, which can be misleading for diagnosing women.

Emotional health

Dr Yaranov highlights the importance of the role of stress and emotional health linked to heart disease in women. He elaborates, “Conditions like anxiety and depression can increase heart risks, but they’re rarely part of heart health conversations.”

Post-menopause risks

Post-menopausal women are more prone to the risk of heart disease. The heart surgeon highlights, “The natural drop in estrogen removes a layer of protection, increasing the chances of high blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart attacks.”

Treatments

Dr Yaranov points out the appalling disparity of receiving life-saving treatments between men and women. “Whether it’s medication, stents, or even CPR, women receive them less often than men – yet they need them just as much,” the cardiologist adds.

Prevention

The doctor stresses that most heart diseases are preventable. He suggests, “A heart-healthy lifestyle, regular check-ups, and listening to your body can make all the difference.”

Dasha Talks ‘Cutthroat’ Women, Men Who ‘Can Do No Wrong’ in Country

When it comes to men and women in country music, the playing field is far from level. During this week’s episode of Rolling Stone‘s Nashville Now podcast, singer-songwriter Dasha shares her firsthand experience with the uneven balance of power in Nashville, especially when it comes to what artists can and cannot say.

“Especially in the country world, men, for the most part, can do no wrong. The more they’re outspoken and the more they express their opinions and go outside the lines, the more someone’s like, ‘Oh, he’s so cool,’” Dasha says.

But were a woman dare to be outspoken, she’d expect blowback, often from the genre’s very fans.

“Women are so cutthroat. If I saw a woman breaking the rules online a bit, in the country world, wearing some shorts that her cheeks are out, I’d be like, ‘Go queen!’ But they’re like, ‘You stupid bitch,’” Dasha says of online commenters.

After some therapy, Dasha says she’s able to better deal with the comments she receives. In the past, she’s read them and tear up. “Now, when I see those comments, I’m like, ‘Thanks, Karen from Minnesota, you’re feeding my algorithm. Appreciate you, girl.’”

Dasha, who broke out with the viral hit “Austin (Boots Stop Workin’),” is gearing up for the release of her new EP, Anna, on Oct. 10th. On Friday, she dropped the latest track from the project, “Train.”

Struggling to lose weight after 30? Fitness coach Lars Meidell shares diet tips and smart strategies to shed pounds, burn fat, and stay healthy in your 30s.

Losing weight can feel tougher as you cross 30, with slower metabolism, busy schedules, and changing hormones making fitness a challenge. Fitness coach Lars Meidell shares in his September 18 Instagram post the most effective diet tips to help you shed pounds and stay healthy in your 30s and beyond. How do calories add up and cause weight gain over time

“This is 7,700 calories of chocolate,” Lars explains. “But there’s also 7,700 calories in 1kg of fat. This means you’d have to eat all of this chocolate on top of your maintenance calories to gain 1kg of fat. Doesn’t sound realistic to eat all of this in one day, does it?”

He adds, “So why is it that over time we gain weight even if we’re not eating huge amounts of food at once? The truth is, people get fat because calories add up gradually.”

Lars illustrates this with a simple example: “Here’s 550 calories worth of nuts, bread, and chocolate. If you just eat one of these portions on top of your maintenance calories for 14 days, you’ve gained 1kg of fat.”

What’s the key to losing stubborn fat

He advises, “You don’t have to cut out all the foods you love to live a healthy, happy, and sustainable life. But if you want to lose those stubborn love handles and achieve a toned, lean, flat stomach, you need to stop making mistakes like this.”

“To make it work, it’s crucial to know your daily calorie and protein goals, especially if you’re a man over 35. I’ve recorded a three-step guide showing how you can get the most effective nutrition plan,” concludes Lars.

‘They Offered Me Rs. 1.65 Crore, Men And Women Sharing Bed Is Unacceptable For Me’, Tanushree Dutta On Rejecting Bigg Boss

Every season of the reality show Bigg Boss grabs headlines, whether for controversies, dramatic twists, or celebrity revelations. Recently, Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta opened up about the show in an interview and made it clear why she has never been a part of it. Speaking to one of the media houses Tanushree revealed that the makers have approached her repeatedly over the years, but she has consistently declined their offers because she values her privacy and refuses to compromise on her principles.

Tanushree Dutta

“For the last eleven years, they have been trying to get me on the show,” Tanushree said. “Every season, I get a call, and every season I refuse. I even scold them sometimes. I simply cannot live in such an environment. I don’t even share my home with family members because I like my own space, so how can I stay in a house full of strangers?”

Tanushree Dutta

The actress disclosed that she was offered a huge paycheck to participate but still chose to stay away. “They once offered me ₹1.65 crore because a Bollywood actress of my level had been paid that much,” she revealed. “A stylist from the Bigg Boss team even told me they could increase the amount if I agreed, but I turned it down without a second thought.” Tanushree further explained that no amount of money could convince her.

Tanushree Dutta

“Even if they offered me the moon, I wouldn’t do it. The idea of men and women sharing beds and fighting under one roof is unacceptable to me. I’m particular about my diet and lifestyle. How could anyone think I would sleep next to a man on a reality show for publicity? I am not that desperate, no matter how many crores they offer.” Over the years, Bigg Boss has paid record sums to some contestants. During Bigg Boss 14, wild-card entrant Aly Goni earned around ₹16 lakh per week, taking home approximately ₹2.8 crore, while actress Rimi Sen was offered about ₹2 crore for her stint in Bigg Boss 9.

5 Fall Denim Styles For Men and How to Style Each

by jummy84 September 15, 2025
written by jummy84

I’m thrilled to say hello to everyone who’s reading this and to share with you a glimpse into some of the insights I’ve gained through my 15-year career in fashion. I’m a Canadian-born fashion enthusiast and style expert, currently working for luxury retailer Holt Renfrew, which, for those who know, is Canada’s fashion mecca! I’m excited to share with you some exciting stories from my travels and my personal styling tips that I apply to all aspects of my life.

September is one of those months that signals a shift into a new way of dressing. As we hang up our summer staples, we start to think about what we need to buy for the fall season. For me, fall fashion is my favorite time of year. As someone who’s always on the go, I can’t live without a trusty pair of jeans. I don’t think I’m ready to step into the skinny trend once again, but I recently tried on five different fits that will carry me through the next couple of months. I like to have fun with my style while simultaneously looking clean and put together. Below, I’ve shared some of my favorite denim styles out there right now that achieve just that. In addition to my perfectly curated collection of fall denim, I’ve also shared how I am styling each pair. The hope is that these looks will serve as your cheat sheet to easy and stylish fall dressing all season long.
