NHS surgeon says certain pregnancy complications can be ‘failures of paternal biology’, so men need preconception too

by jummy84 November 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Pregnancy is often framed as a woman’s sole responsibility, with society quick to blame her body when complications arise. But growing evidence shows that men’s biology and genetics play an equally crucial role – influencing everything from placental development to pregnancy risks. Far from being a one-sided process, pregnancy is shaped by both parents’ contributions, and paternal factors can be just as decisive in determining outcomes.

Dr Karan Rajan, a UK-based NHS surgeon and popular health content creator, has highlighted how paternal biology and genetics shape pregnancy – from significantly influencing placental growth to contributing to certain pregnancy-related complications. In an Instagram video posted on August 28, the surgeon stresses, “Despite the biological reality, society still continues to act as though pregnancy is solely the woman’s responsibility and burden. But building a human Tamagotchi is not a solo project.”

How does the placenta form?

Dr Rajan emphasises that one of the most crucial aspects of pregnancy – placental formation – is largely driven by the father’s contribution, as it is primarily influenced by paternal genes. He humorously compares pregnancy to an aggressive land grab situation, explaining, “In fact, pregnancy is basically a massive internal land grab. The maternal immune system essentially fighting off the foreign placenta and the paternal genes pushing for more foetal growth.”

The placenta isn’t a gentle or passive organ; it actively embeds itself into the mother’s uterine lining to secure the nutrients the foetus needs. The surgeon elaborates, “The placenta isn’t a gentle, cooperative organ. It’s an almost parasitic entity that hijacks the mother’s bodies to get the foetus what it wants. The father’s gene determines how aggressive and how deep the placenta invades into the uterus and the demands on the mother. It’s like an alien species terraforming the uterus to maximize resource extraction from the mother to optimise foetal growth.”

Some pregnancy complications can be due to male genetics

Dr Rajan emphasises that since placental formation is heavily influenced by the father’s genes, some pregnancy complications like preeclampsia – which happens when the placenta doesn’t implant deeply enough in the uterus, leading to poor blood flow in the foetus – can be considered “failures of paternal biology.” He adds, “Paternal genes can also influence gestational diabetes, miscarriages, and even foetal growth restriction.”

Preconception for men

Dr Rajan highlights that sperm take roughly three months – around 64 to 74 days – to fully develop, meaning the lifestyle choices made during this window can directly influence fertility and the health of the placenta, which carries half of the father’s DNA. This makes a healthy preconception period essential for men.

He elaborates, “That means the diet, sleep, stress, alcohol, smoking, and environmental exposures in the three months before conception can directly influence sperm quality (DNA integrity, motility, morphology). Most fertility guidelines recommend men start optimising at least three months before trying for a baby – treating it almost like a ‘male preconception period’ – just as women are advised to optimise their health.”

There’s a reason Dior Sauvage is one of the most popular men’s colognes of all time. It opens with bright citrus, marine notes, and warm amberwood, balanced by spicy Sichuan pepper at the heart.

When Lauren Rivera and her now-husband planned their wedding and honeymoon, they each chose a signature scent for the occasion. He picked Sauvage. Three years later, the cologne transports her to that special time. “It brings me back to our honeymoon in Lisbon and Barcelona,” she says. “It triggers those memories in an instant.”

Name a teen who isn’t obsessed with Billie Eilish—we’ll wait. Playful and confident, Your Turn feels made for the next generation of fragrance lovers. The dice-inspired bottle looks great on a vanity, while the scent balances spicy cardamom and ginger with soft musk and creamy sandalwood.

“Your Turn is this balance of bright, spicy, sweet, and earthy that’s always evolving on your skin,” says Sinks. “The peach skin comes through here without turning it into a true fruity fragrance, and the ginger and cardamom add some spicy depth without weighing it down. It’s an effervescent scent that sparkles on the skin throughout wear and makes you look forward to the next time you spray it on.”

This $24 cologne smells like a cashmere sweater layered over a worn leather jacket: cozy with just enough edge. The mix of cardamom, black vanilla, and amber gives it warmth and dimension, while the tobacco and woods create a rich dry-down that lingers all night. R Madhavan says white women once avoided Indian men but not anymore: ‘Now they think we are entrepreneurs, say hello’

by jummy84 November 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Actor R Madhavan recently recalled that a few years ago, when Indian men travelled abroad, white women would often be cautious around them, assuming they were trying to flirt. He added that this perception has completely changed now.

Madhavan will soon be seen in Anshul Sharma’s De De Pyaar De 2

Madhavan reveals

Madhavan spoke about how the perception of male characters on screen has evolved during his appearance on BookMyShow’s Unscripted show on YouTube. He was joined by his De De Pyaar De 2 co-stars Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh and Meezan Jafri for the candid conversation.

Madhavan recalled that a few years ago, when Indian men travelled abroad, gori ladkiyan (white women) would often be cautious around them, assuming they wanted to flirt with. He added that this perception has completely changed now. In fact, he joked that white women today are more likely to approach Indian men, believing they’re entrepreneurs.

“Sari gori ladkiyan aise dekhti thi jaise unko line marne aaye hain (When we used to go abroad and go to a bar, all the white women would look at us like we were there to hit on them). Now, it is such that when an Indian enters a space, four white women walk towards us thinking we are some entrepreneur and they want to say hello. I have not seen that Indian in the movies yet,” he said, adding that he wants to see this version of Indian men in the movies.

Speaking about his desire to collaborate with new directors, Madhavan said that with years of experience behind him, he now wants to blend his learnings with a filmmaker’s fresh and refined storytelling approach. “The thing that is getting in my way right now is the filmyness of the industry in terms of the way they think. They all are making stories to please their mentors,” he said.

About Madhavan’s work

Madhavan will soon be seen in Anshul Sharma’s De De Pyaar De 2, the sequel to Akiv Ali’s 2019 film De De Pyaar De. The sequel also stars Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh, Gautami Kapoor, and Meezaan Jafri. The sequel appears to pick up where the first film left off. De De Pyaar De 2 is produced by T-Series Films and Luv Films. It will be released in theatres on 14 November.

He will also be seen in Dhurandhar. Some days back, Ranveer Singh unveiled the first poster featuring actor R Madhavan from Dhurandhar. Taking to Instagram, Ranveer shared the poster and called Madhavan’s character “Charioteer of Karma.” Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar also stars Ranveer, Arjun, Akshaye Khanna, and Sanjay Dutt. The movie is jointly produced by Aditya Dhar, Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar. Dhurandhar is slated to release in cinemas on December 5, 2025, followed by a premiere on Netflix.

25 Best Colognes for Men 2025, According to Fragrance Experts

by jummy84 October 31, 2025

When testing, we experimented with different application methods—from pulse-point spritzes to full-body mists—to see how each scent performed in real scenarios. We noted which ones lasted at least five hours with moderate sillage (strong enough for people to remember us by, but never overpowering), as well as those rare finds that lasted eight hours or more—even clinging to clothing for days.

We compared notes with fellow editors, fragrance experts, and even our friends and family to find ones that earned genuine compliments(Some lingered on clothing for days.)

We’ve spritzed, sniffed, and tested our way through the popular brands like Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, Hermès, and Prada—plus modern classics from Gucci, Burberry, and Bvlgari—to find ones that redefine what masculinity smells like today. Whether it’s a sleek, unisex blend from Byredo, the sensual depth of Mugler and Christian Dior, or the fresh hit of Chrome Le Parfum, our editors tried it all. We also reached for power players like Montblanc, Cartier, and Guerlain, exploring how today’s fragrances blur the lines between strength and softness, confidence and subtlety—because smelling good has never been just one note.

And if you’re not sure where to start, a cologne sampler set is a great way to explore. Testing a few smaller vials helps you see how different notes—fresh, woody, spicy, or musky—develop on your skin before committing to a full bottle. The Men’s Fragrance Discovery Set and Sephora’s Cologne Sampler Set with Redeemable Voucher let you play the field—spritz, sniff, and see what actually sticks before committing to the whole bottle.

Demi Moore says Tom Cruise was ‘embarrassed’ by her pregnancy while filming A Few Good Men

by jummy84 October 26, 2025

Demi Moore recently recalled a memorable moment with her co-star Tom Cruise during the filming of A Few Good Men. Speaking during an interview with writer Jia Tolentino at the New Yorker Festival on October 25, 2025, Moore shared that she was nearly eight months pregnant with her daughter, Scout Willis, during the film’s preproduction stage.

“I think Tom was quite embarrassed,” Moore told the audience. “I actually felt okay about it. I was moving around, though, right? But I could tell he felt that it was a bit awkward.”

The actress explained that Cruise’s reaction likely mirrored the norms of that period, when few Hollywood women were expecting children while working on major productions. At the time, Moore was one of the few leading actresses navigating both motherhood and a high-profile career, People reported.

“It’s one of the many things, for me, that I just felt didn’t make sense. And so I challenged that to say, you know, ‘Why not? Why can’t you have both?” she said. The Substance star added that she put immense pressure on herself to show women could maintain successful careers while raising families.

Moore on balancing pregnancy and acting demands

Moore admitted that she became “an overachiever” while trying to balance her pregnancy with work. “I look back at that time now, and I go, ‘What the f*** was I thinking?’” she said, reflecting on the challenges of rehearsing while heavily pregnant.

She also recalled breastfeeding and blocking scenes soon after giving birth. The actress noted that Hollywood now provides a more supportive environment for mothers, compared to the expectations she faced in the early 1990s.

Staying active before giving birth

Preparing for her role as a Navy lawyer in A Few Good Men, Moore stayed unusually active during her pregnancy. The Ghost star said she anticipated too much while trying to work out and get into a military uniform. “I did a two-and-a-half-hour hike the day my water broke, a 24-mile bike ride, and danced at a reggae club, hence why she came two-and-a-half weeks early,” the Indecent Proposal actress explained.

Moore added that she is proud that younger actresses no longer need to “prove themselves” the way she once felt she had to, saying the industry now allows women to embrace both motherhood and ambition without guilt.

“When it hurts, I come here and scream it out loud.” 🇧🇷 Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a Brazilian film titled The Son of a Thousand Men, based on highly acclaimed Brazilian novel. Ready for streaming in November this fall. A father without a son, a son without a father, and a shared dream. A village of one-of-a-kind encounters that turn into unlikely stories… Starring Rodrigo Santoro and inspired by the best-selling book by Valter Hugo Mãe, this Netflix film The Son of a Thousand Men, made by Daniel Rezende, shares a fable about solitude, love, and acceptance. Crisóstomo, a 40-year-old fisherman, decides to search for what he lacks: a son. Upon meeting Camilo, a 14-year-old boy, he ends up changing the lives of excluded and rejected characters, forming a non-conventional family united by a love for simple things. In addition to Santoro, it also stars Johnny Massaro, Rebeca Jamir, Juliana Caldas, featuring Miguel Martines as Camilo. It was filmed between Búzios, along the coast of Rio de Janeiro, and Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia. This has some absolutely amazing cinematography by DP Azul Serra. I’m hooked – I will be watching this.

Two more men arrested after Ian Watkins death

Two more men have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, in relation to the death of Ian Watkins.

Two more men arrested after Ian Watkins death

The former Lostprophets frontman – who was serving a 29-year sentence for a string of child sex offences – was fatally injured during an incident at HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire on the morning of October 11th.

Rashid Gedel, 25, and 43-year-old Samuel Dodsworth have been charged over the killing, and they are on remand awaiting trial, but now two other men, who are aged 23 and 39, have been arrested.

West Yorkshire Police Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle said: “Extensive enquiries remain ongoing in relation to the murder of Ian Watkins and these arrests form part of that.

“Ian Watkins’ family are being updated as the investigation progresses.

“However, we do not anticipate any immediate developments at this stage.”

The police added that both men are “in police custody and will be interviewed over the course of today, they will then be bailed and returned to prison while enquiries continue”.

An inquest in Watkins’ death is due to open on Friday (24.10.25) at Wakefield Coroner’s Court.

Police and paramedics were called to the prison after the paedophile singer was reportedly ambushed and fatally injured after a knife attack.

Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “At 9.39am this morning, police were called by staff at HMP Wakefield reporting an assault on a prisoner. Emergency services attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

“Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are investigating and inquiries remain ongoing at the scene.”

A Prison Service spokesperson added in a statement: “We are aware of an incident at HMP Wakefield which took place this morning. We are unable to comment further while the police investigate.”

Watkins, 48, was jailed in December 2013 for 29 years after admitting to a string of sex offences – including the attempted rape of a fan’s baby.

The disgraced musician was caught in 2012 following the execution of a drugs warrant at his home in Pontypridd, Wales, where a large number of computers, mobile phones and storage devices were seized by police.

Analysis of the equipment revealed Watkins’ depraved behaviour.

Of Monsters and Men Share Their Essential Things to Do the Next Time You’re in Reykjavík, Iceland

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

If you’ve been wondering what Of Monsters and Men have been up to in the six years since their last album, the answer is: a lot. The Icelandic folk-rock group released a documentary, Tíu, and an accompanying EP in 2023 to mark the 10th anniversary of their debut, My Head Is an Animal. In the years since, they’ve pursued solo projects, started families, and eventually regrouped to create what became their new album, All Is Love and Pain in the Mouse Parade.

The title may sound cryptic, but it clicks once you understand the record’s focus on duality—looking both inward and backward at the band’s lives, families, and communities, the collective “Mouse Parade.” The album has a quiet intimacy to its sound and delivery, and a warmth to its themes that feels grounded and familiar.

(Credit: Eva Schram)

No strangers to the screen, Of Monsters and Men’s song “Dream Team” appears in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. And who could forget their cameo in Game of Thrones, performing as a traveling theater troupe’s band during a Braavosi play as Arya Stark watched from the audience?

Next up, the band brings their unmistakable stage presence to North America this fall, with an extensive tour hitting nearly 20 cities and multi-night runs at both the Brooklyn Paramount and Hollywood Palladium. The tour continues through the U.K. and Europe in early 2026—on an itinerary that looks like Rick Steves himself might have planned it, except for one curious omission: their hometown of Reykjavík. Not to worry, since they’re the experts, Of Monsters and Men share their top 10 essential things to do if you find yourself aimlessly wandering Reykjavík, courtesy of co-vocalist Nanna Bryndís Hílmarsdóttir with input from the rest of the group.

The public pools are the best way to start your day, and it’s one of the things I miss the most when I’m not here. Vesturbæjarlaug or Sundhöllin are both great, but different. Soak in the hot tub, listen to people rant about politics, then do a cold plunge, sauna, and you’re ready for the day.

If you’re thirsty and hungry for some lunch after swimming, Kaffi Vest is right around the corner from Vesturbæjarlaug.

Bakeries

They are everywhere and they are all good in their own way. The one I find myself going to is Baka Baka. It’s right downtown, and next to it there’s a punk museum in a public bathroom…good little detour with your croissant in hand.

Coffee

Reykjavík Roasters is always solid. They have a few different locations, but I like the one in Ásmundarsalur. It’s a beautiful building that used to be the home and studio of Ásmundur Sveinsson, one of Iceland’s most-loved sculptors. Today the house is a coffee shop and an art space, with performances and exhibitions happening on the second floor. (And if you’re in Iceland before Christmas, they have a really lovely market with local artists selling their pieces.)

Record store for all your vinyl needs—you’ll find some Icelandic gems here. They also serve coffee and beer and sometimes there are live events, so it’s a good place to hang out for a while.

Ocean Time

There are many nice paths by the ocean for a walk. I like going to Nauthólsvík to swim in the ocean. Most of our beaches have black sand, so it’s a strange sight to see this manmade golden-sand beach. After dipping into the ocean, you can relax in the hot tub and order coffee.

The Reykjavík Art Museum has three locations. Plenty to explore, and all beautiful in their own way. The museums regularly exhibit works by Iceland’s most well-known artists. Always a good place to wander.

A Nordic-style bistro—good cocktails, good food, good times.

Drive Aimlessly / Rúnta

You’re never far from nature when in Reykjavík. Drive 30 minutes out of town and there’s plenty to see and many beautiful hikes. But if we are sticking to the downtown area, I’d say take the car and drive to an ice cream shop. Order a bragðarefur, then drive to the lighthouse at Grótta.

Best place for good wine… perfect place to end your night. Not loud, not too quiet. Just kinda perfect.

Two men charged with murder of Lostprophets’ Ian Watkins

13 October 2025

Two men have been charged with the murder of Ian Watkins.

Ian Watkins was killed in prison

The former Lostprophets frontman – who was serving a 29-year sentence for a string of child sex offences – was fatally injured during an incident at HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire on Saturday (11.10.25) morning and now Rashid Gedel, 25, and 43-year-old Samuel Dodsworth have been charged over the killing.

The pair will appear before Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Monday (13.10.25), West Yorkshire Police have announced.

Prison guards were said to have been unable to “save” the inmate.

A source told The Sun: “Guards were nearby and raced to the scene pretty quickly – but there was nothing they could do, and they could not save him.

“It was a horrific scene, with blood everywhere and alarms and sirens going off.

“Police and ambulances were called and the whole prison was locked down with all cons confined to their cells.”

The Welsh singer had previously been stabbed in an incident at the same prison in 2023 and suffered non life-threatening injuries after reportedly being taken hostage by three other inmates for six hours.

Two men arrested after Lostprophets’ Ian Watkins killed in prison attack

by jummy84 October 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Two men have been arrested following the prison attack that killed the convicted sex offender and former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins.

Yesterday (October 11), West Yorkshire Police confirmed that Watkins was attacked by a fellow inmate at HMP Wakefield and died from his injuries at the age of 48.

“At 9.39am this morning (Saturday), police were called by staff at HMP Wakefield reporting an assault on a prisoner,” a police statement said. “Emergency services attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are investigating and inquiries remain ongoing at the scene.”

Now, police have confirmed that two men aged 25 and 43 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently being held in police custody. A spokesperson for the Prison Service said they could not comment while the investigation is ongoing.

Watkins was serving a 29-year sentence, with a further six years on licence. He pleaded guilty to 13 sex offences in 2013, including the attempted rape of a baby, conspiring to rape a child, three counts of sexual assault involving children, seven involving taking, making or possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal.

In 2023, he was attacked and taken hostage by three other inmates, before being found and freed by officers and taken to hospital. It was later reported that Watkins had been stabbed with a “sharpened toilet brush” over a drug debt.

A 2024 book titled Life Behind Bars In The Monster Mansion by Jonathan Levi and Emma French claimed that Watkins had “spent thousands on protection” while in prison, explaining that rough justice is “particularly likely” to be “meted out” to paedophiles in jail.

In 2017, Watkins was reported to have been grooming a mother from his prison cell. The 21-year-old’s child was subsequently taken into care after social services were alerted of her contact with the disgraced singer.

‘We’re sickened,” said a spokesman from the NSPCC at the time. “It’s utterly bewildering that he could carry on grooming. It shows contempt for children he abused, and raises serious questions about supervision.”

At the time, it was said that prison officials in Wakefield reportedly found “nothing untoward” in their exchanges via letters and emails. A spokesman from Lincolnshire police meanwhile added: “We will always take action to safeguard vulnerable adults and children.”
