Inspector Zende review: Manoj Bajpayee’s conviction makes this sluggish yet funny film on Charles Sobhraj’s arrest work

Inspector Zende movie review

Director: Chinmay Mandlekar

Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Jim Sarbh, Sachin Khedekar, Girija Oak, Bhalchandra Kadam

Rating: ★★★

If Helen of Troy’s face was the one that launched a thousand ships, then Manoj Bajpayee’s is the one that can make you believe the impossible. Give him a script and he’ll have you convinced that aliens are running the local paan shop, and you would still be first in line to try it.

Inspector Zende review: Manoj Bajpayee stars as the titular character.

Inspector Zende comes across as a distant cousin of Manoj’s Srikant Tiwari from The Family Man, perhaps because the territory feels so familiar to him. The story follows the titular protagonist on his mission to catch murderer Carl Bhojraj (obviously Charles Sobhraj), with the pursuit unfolding as a quirky comedy.

Written and directed by Chinmay Mandlekar, the film plays out like a classic snake-and-mongoose battle, which is exactly how Zende himself frames it. It is based on real-life cop Madhukar Zende, who caught Charles not once but twice, a story that almost demanded a big-screen retelling. And what might look like cinematic exaggeration often turns out to be fact: Zende really did have two policemen sit on Charles during the train ride from Goa to Mumbai after his arrest!

The tone remains light. The squad of cops surrounding Manoj is as eccentric as he is, each with a quirk that marks them out. The gravity of Charles’s crimes, which earned him the nickname Bikini Killer, never disappears, but the film lets humour stand front and centre.

Where the film stumbles is in its pacing. The constant chase eventually wears you down, and after a point, you begin to wonder about the purpose of it all. The predictability does not help either, draining some of the energy from an otherwise lively setup.

In the performance department, Manoj Bajpayee plays Zende with his trademark conviction, blending charm into the role. Jim Sarbh looks every bit the suave Carl and nails the accent, bringing a touch of menace beneath the polish. Bhalchandra Kasam fits the role of Zende’s sidekick with ease, while Sachin Khedekar, though in a smaller part, leaves the right impression.

Overall, Inspector Zende is an engaging watch in parts, lifted by Manoj Bajpayee’s steady presence and a cast that rises to the occasion. Yet the repetition in storytelling keeps it from reaching the heights its premise promised. At three stars, this is a serviceable thriller with a humorous streak, more enjoyable for its performances than its plot.

Anurag Kashyap and Guneet Monga to Present Manoj Bajpayee’s Jugnuma

by jummy84 August 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Manoj Bajpayee is all set to headline the upcoming feature Jugnuma, whose English title is The Fable. Director Ram Reddy will be helming the project, making it his second feature directorial. He had earlier directed the 2016 Kannada National Award-winning debut Thithi.

Jugnuma had successful premieres across film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival and won the Best Film at Leeds International Film Festival and Special Jury Prize at Mami Mumbai Film Festival. Now, the makers have announced the India release date as well. Jugnuma will hit the big screen on September 12 and it will be presented by Guneet Monga Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap, who have come onboard as executive producers.

Set in the late 80s, the film follows Dev (Bajpayee), who discovers mysteriously burnt trees in his sprawling estate of fruit orchards nestled in the Indian Himalayas. In spite of all efforts, more fires break out, leading him to see himself and his family for who they truly are. The film also stars Deepak Dobriyal, Priyanka Bose and Tillotma Shome, among others.

“I had loved Raam’s Thithi, which was so rooted and genuine, and with Jugnuma, he has created a film that feels timeless,” Anurag Kashyap said in a statement. The filmmaker, who 0has previously collaborated with Bajpayee on the game-changing two-part epic Gangs of Wasseypur called his act in the film “unlike anything” the audience has seen before.

When Jaya Bachchan Predicted Big B Would ‘Rule Bollywood’ After Lashing Out At Manoj Kumar For Casting Amitabh In A Supporting Role

It’s always fascinating to learn about the golden days of Bollywood, how the movies were made, and what happened on sets. An old incident about Jaya Bachchan taking a stand for Amitabh Bachchan dates back to the release of the Manoj Kumar directorial Roti Kapda Aur Makaan in 1974. Jaya Bachchan blasted Manoj Kumar for casting Amitabh Bachchan in a supporting role.

Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan, who married on June 3, 1973, celebrated their 52nd anniversary this year. Although they frequently exchange words of great respect and affection, Jaya—renowned for being outspoken—has fought for her husband in front of celebrities like Rajesh Khanna and Manoj Kumar.

Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, starring Manoj, debuted in theaters in 1974. Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, and Shashi Kapoor also played key roles in the movie. Despite experiencing several failures at the beginning of his career, Amitabh had already scored a hit with Zanjeer (1973). He was well on his way to becoming the titan whose fame would last for decades and even generations. Despite this, Amitabh received comparatively less screen time than Manoj, who portrayed Bharat, and Amitabh, who played the role of his brother Vijay.

Jaya Bachchan Clashed With Manoj Kumar Over Amitabh Bachchan’s Limited Role In Roti Kapda Aur Makaan

Jaya Bachchan, who had only married Amitabh Bachchan a year prior, voiced her displeasure with her husband’s screen time in the Manoj Kumar-directed movie. Manoj was also the writer and producer of the action drama.

Amitabh was yet to have his breakthrough hit, even after making his feature debut in 1969’s Saat Hindustani. Five years later, Manoj asked the actor to be in his film Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, where he would play a key role. But rather than being the central star, he was cast as a supporting actor opposite Madan, Dheeraj Kumar, and Premnath.

Jaya Bachchan didn’t take this well. According to an IMDb report, the actress stated in a media interview that Manoj Kumar squandered Amitabh Bachchan’s talent for the movie. She claimed that Manoj purposefully reduced Amitabh’s screen time.

The film was one of the top-grossing films of the year. It is recognized as one of Manoj Kumar’s biggest box office hits. On a Rs 1.28 crore budget, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan reportedly brought in Rs 7.50 core at the box office.

Jaya Bachchan Defended Amitabh Bachchan Against Rajesh Khanna

Much earlier than this, in 1972, Jaya stood up to Rajesh Khanna on behalf of her then-boyfriend Amitabh Bachchan. Rajesh allegedly reprimanded Amitabh for visiting the sets of Bawarchi to meet his co-star.

Rajesh, the biggest star then, thought Big B had no chance of success since Amitabh’s movies failed to make money. In addition, he asked Jaya to avoid him. Jaya had responded angrily, saying Amitabh would eventually take over the business. The phrases were fictitious. Amitabh Bachchan, as we know it, is one of the biggest stars of the time.

5 Actors Who Rejected Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Bollywood

Devdas: Salman Khan, Manoj Bajpayee To Kareena Kapoor Khan

Salman Khan To Kareena Kapoor Khan, 5 Actors Who Rejected Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas! ( Photo Credit – Instagram; IMDb )

Devdas is one of the most iconic and successful films in Indian cinema’s history. It starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played his love interest, Paro. Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff also played pivotal roles. But did you know most of them weren’t the first choice of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali? Scroll below for some insightful details!

Based on a novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, the film revolves around a wealthy law graduate who returns from London to marry his childhood love. He delves into alcoholism and eventually destruction after his family rejects their relationship. It was the most expensive film made then, with a budget of approximately 44 crores.

Here’s a list of 5 actors who rejected Devdas:

1. Manoj Bajpayee

Manoj Bajpayee was among the possible options for the role of Chunnillal. However, he was doing only leading roles then and wanted to avoid playing a supporting character. He even openly said that he wanted to play the role of Devdas, but Sanjay Leela Bhansali had satisfactorily narrowed down on Shah Rukh Khan.

2. Govinda

The first actor in mind for Chunnillal was Govinda. He was a superstar then and did not want to play a side character. The Coolie No 1 actor also agreed to play, given the condition Shah Rukh Khan calls him and convinces him in the name of friendship. That’s what he told Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but it is unknown why things did not eventually work out.

3. Saif Ali Khan

After multiple rejections, Saif Ali Khan was approached for Chunnilal, but the actor reportedly demanded a huge paycheck. But he later clarified and claimed Sanjay Leela Bhansali closed the chapter without any discussion, so he did not really turn down the offer.

Ultimately, Jackie Shroff was roped in to play the supporting character and cine goers hailed him for his spectacular performance!

4. Kareena Kapoor Khan

Bebo had declared she would never work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali after their Devdas fallout. Kareena Kapoor Khan was finalized for the role of Paro and was even paid the signing amount. Out of the blue, she was dropped from the film and replaced by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. It was the start of her career and a huge blow for the actress, who later rejected Bajirao Mastani.

5. Salman Khan

Many would be shocked to hear that Salman Khan was the first choice to play Devdas. SLB knew his strengths and weaknesses after they worked together in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

However, Salman Khan rejected the offer, which gave a freeway for Shah Rukh Khan to be signed as Devdas. And honestly, we aren’t complaining!
