CBS News’ Jonathan Vigliotti Pens Book On Los Angeles Wildfires

by jummy84 October 27, 2025
written by jummy84

CBS News Correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti has penned a book on covering the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year and the implications for the city as it prepares for the Olympic Games.

Torched: How a City Was Left to Burn, and the Olympic Rush to Rebuild L.A. will publish on May 12 from Atria/One Signal.

Per the publisher, Vigliotti “brings readers inside the inferno that devastated Los Angeles, weaving on-the-ground reporting with the deeper story of how a century of unchecked development and political mismanagement set the stage for disaster.” The book also will place the fire within the larger history of Los Angeles, and whether the post-fire rebuild in advance of the 2028 Games will address prevention of similar disasters and the “rampant inequities this blaze brought to global attention.”

Jonathan Vigliotti

Vigliotti, based in Los Angeles, joined CBS News in 2015, and his work has appeared on Sunday Morning, Face the Nation and 48 Hours. He was recognized with an Emmy and an Edward R. Murrow Award, and has covered the Syrian civil war, the Mediterranean refugee crisis and Arctic climate change, among other stories worldwide.

Vigliotti is the author of Before It’s Gone: Stories from the Front Lines of Climate Change in Small-Town America, also published by Atria/One Signal.

MSNBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff also is publishing his account of covering the fires, Firestorm: The Great Los Angeles Fires and America’s New Age of Disaster, set to be published in Janaury.

Los Cinco Cardones’ Debut Shows Their Versatility » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

The title track of Los Cinco Cardones’ debut, El Quinto Cardón, sits just about at the album’s center. It’s a spellbinding ten minutes of desert-tinged jazz, keys lifting like a midnight wind, guitar echoing over open sand, bass rolling along on a high-speed night drive, sax soaring into a cloudless midnight. That is both the record’s heart and its pinnacle: the quartet performing not just a piece but a cohesive landscape, breathtaking and dreamlike. Here is where the band move with the tightest fit, everything glowing, everyone creating. It is outstanding.

I start my review five tracks in, not because “El Quinto Cardón” is representative of the rest of the album–no two of its tracks are alike enough for such a claim–but because I can’t stop listening to it in all its lengthy, evocative glory. Part of me thinks I would like an entire album of this song.

A wiser part of me, though, knows that what makes this piece so mesmerizing is that it arrives amid a very eclectic mix. Each of the eight tracks of El Quinto Cardón has its own feel, profoundly so. El Quinto Cardón opens with the straight-ahead grooves of “El Baile De Los Cardones”, a warm introduction to the group on which each member gets at least a moment in the spotlight: bandleader Sebastian Maschat on drums, Sebastian Dimarco on bass, Diego Sole on guitars, and Howard Clifton on sax and keys. “Afresque” picks up the pace with broad Afrobeat references, giving Clifton a chance to loosely emulate Fela with swinging brass.

The band skip into unexpected meters on “Clowns are the Real Magicians”, in which Clifton’s lilting keys are crucial in delivering on the whimsy promised in the title, as are subtle horn squeaks at the end. There’s an esoteric flair to “Ode to Being Weightless”, in which Clifton sings over retro, agile riffs. After monumental “El Quinto Cardón” is a trio of more fast-paced numbers: melodica-infused “Peyotito”, guitar-driven and progressive-tinged “Sheep of My Parrish”, and quirky Afrobeat-meets-fast march “Afrencera En Onze Típico”.

It’s hard to imagine getting bored at a Los Cinco Cardones gig. El Quinto Cardón is an impressive show of the group’s range, and their musicianship throughout is unquestionable. It’s a promising sampler, well-balanced between freedom and structure. The diversity of the band’s repertoire is intriguing, if sometimes hard to parse as a single record. Simply put, a lot is going on. Even so, the band hit marvelous heights, and there are moments here that are truly exhilarating and well worth the time spent listening.

Los Cinco Cardones don’t necessarily need to pare down their stylistic field, to be sure. There is much to be said for how wide a net is cast on El Quinto Cardón. Each member does exceptional work with complex meters and thoughtful melodies. Would they be better off sticking to a single mood for a single album? Maybe the focus would make it easier for me to stop listening to one track over and over.

Then again, maybe the group know better than to try to reuse textures they’ve already put to good use. Whatever their strategy, I look forward to the quartet’s next directions, however many there are and however far they go before making yet more turns.

Official Trailer for ‘Selena y Los Dinos’ Doc About Selena Quintanilla

by Alex Billington
October 21, 2025

“Selena was bigger than what she thought she was.” Netflix has revealed the trailer for a documentary film titled Selena y Los Dinos, made by filmmaker Isabel Castro as her second feature after Mija. This doc first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and played at SXSW, Hot Docs, AFI Fest, and will be out to watch in November. Selena y Los Dinos celebrates the life and legacy of the Queen of Tejano, Selena Quintanilla, who along with her family performed, triumphed, and redefined genres, captured in never-before-seen footage from the family’s personal archive. It’s also the tragic true story of what happened to her – she was shot and killed at the age of 23 by her friend and the former manager of her Selena Etc. boutiques. Her story has been told before: in 1997, Warner Bros made Selena starring a then-unknown Jennifer Lopez; and in 2020, Netflix released Selena: The Series starring Christian Serratos. This doc celebrates her life and successes above all. “Whether a lifelong fan or just discovering Selena, Castro offers an intimate new lens to experience Selena’s legacy and a reason to want to belt out ‘Como la Flor.'” Definitely looks like a good one.

Here’s the official trailer for Isabel Castro’s doc Selena y Los Dinos, direct from Netflix’s YouTube:

Selena y Los Dinos Trailer

Selena Quintanilla — best known as the “Queen of Tejano Music” — and her family band, Selena y Los Dinos, rose from performing at quinceañeras to selling out stadium tours. The celebration of her life and legacy is chronicled through never-before-seen footage found in the family’s personal archive. A heartfelt tribute to Selena Quintanilla that deftly captures the singer’s exuberance, humility, and the profound bond she shared with her family. Interviews with those close to her reveal the heart and sacrifice behind her rise to fame, while nostalgic home videos transport us back to the 1990s, offering never-before-seen glimpses into their lives on tour. The warmth of the home videos is like sitting with the Quintanillas and reliving their journey firsthand. Selena y Los Dinos is a documentary film directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Isabel Castro, director of Mija previously, and a few short films and other projects. Produced by Simran Singh, Julie Goldman, Christopher Clements, J. Daniel Torres, David Blackman. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Netflix will debut Isabel Castro’s Selena y Los Dinos doc film streaming on Netflix worldwide starting November 17th, 2025 coming soon. Anyone want to watch?

A Week In Los Angeles Using A Klarna Card

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

4:30 p.m. — If I want to make it to the next day, I’m going to need some food in my house, so off to the grocery store we go, where I buy ingredients for a few recipes I have in mind, plus a little bouquet of flowers to brighten my home. To be completely honest, grocery shopping is an adulting task that I’m still getting used to. The total amount is a lot, but I justify it because it’ll be cheaper than eating out. And by using my Klarna Card, I can easily track how much I’m spending in the app. And the beauty of this card — and how it differs from other cards — is that I can use it two ways: as a regular debit card wherever Visa or virtual payments are accepted (so, pretty much everywhere) and as a way to plan for a bigger purchase and pay later.

Janelle Monáe’s Wondaween 2025 Returns to Los Angeles

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

The month-long festivities will take place across the city in cemeteries, theaters, secret locations, and the Hollywood Bowl

Janelle Monáe and the Wondaland Arts Society are bringing back her month-long, city-spanning Halloween bash to Los Angeles.

Wondaween 2025 kicked off earlier this month with Cinespia, which took place at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Oct. 11, and will continue with Monáe Manor at the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride.

Monáe will also host a “spine-tingling evening of creative conversations on horror” alongside guests Danny Elfman, Akela Cooper, and Janelle’s costuming team Sasha Glasser and Alex Navarro at USC’s Eileen Norris Cinema Theatre; a game night at the Spare Room on Oct. 23; and a screening of Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs on Oct. 27 at the Fine Arts Theatre.

The Hollywood Bowl will also feature Tim Burton‘s The Nightmare Before Christmas in Concert on Oct. 25 and 26 with Elfman singing as Jack, Monáe as Sally, Keith David as Oogie Boogie, Riki Lindhome as Shock, and John Stamos as Lock.

Trending Stories

The seasonal spectacle will reach its untimely ending the night before Halloween at a secret location with only 1,000 unfortunate souls allowed entry (if that’s you, sign up at the mailing list at the Wondaween website for your chance to attend). Monáe will lead the night as host and a press release bills the macabre evening as a “costumed celebration with surprise DJ sets throughout the night, unlimited rides, bites, progenys, and vamps from all around the world.” The gathering will most likely also see Monáe reveal her annual costume: In past years she’s played the headless bride, “Flyyyrene” (a reference to the fly that topped Mike Pence’s head during the 2020 debate), The Fifth Element’s Diva Plavalaguna, and E.T.

“Halloween is such a happy space for me. It has been since I was a kid. It opens a larger conversation of how do we become agents of joy? How do we become agents of happy? How do we become agents of imaginations?” Monáe told The Hollywood Reporter last year. “I’m just doing what I want to see more of. Bringing Halloween experiences and creative experiences is heart work, not hard work. I do this because my heart needs it.”

Paul Pierce Arrested For Alleged DUI After Being Found Asleep Behind The Wheel On Los Angeles Freeway

by jummy84 October 10, 2025
written by jummy84

NBA legend Paul Pierce has found himself in legal trouble after being arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers discovered the former Boston Celtics star asleep behind the wheel of a Range Rover late Tuesday night on the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley. Authorities had been responding to a multi-vehicle crash nearby when they spotted the SUV stopped in active lanes near Lankershim Boulevard.

“When officers approached, they found the driver, later identified as Paul Pierce, asleep at the wheel,” the CHP said in a statement. “Officers noted signs of alcohol impairment and conducted a DUI investigation.”

Pierce, 47, was cited for misdemeanor DUI and released from custody. The case will be reviewed by the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.

Pierce, known as “The Truth,” was a 10-time NBA All-Star and 2008 Finals MVP with the Boston Celtics.

What are your thoughts on this arrest?
