Cleto Escobedo III Remembered by ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ Bandmate

by jummy84 November 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was hit by tragedy this week when bandleader Cleto Escobedo III died from an undisclosed illness. “To say that we are heartbroken is an understatement,” Kimmel said in a statement. “Cleto and I have been inseparable since I was nine years old. The fact that we got to work together every day is a dream neither of us could ever have imagined would come true.” (Watch Kimmel’s 22-minute monologue tribute here.) The gig was also a dream for Jimmy Kimmel Live! keyboardist/musical arranger Jeff Babko, who worked alongside Escobedo for over 30 years, and considered him one of his closest friends. Babko hopped on the phone with Rolling Stone to look back at their time together.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen television like Jimmy’s monologue the other night. It was something else. We were all feeling a lot, and I think it really showed what kind of family Jimmy created over there. If it’s not legit blood family, it’s one step removed. It’s pretty deep. And with Cleto gone, it’s all hitting hard. These events — the good ones and the bad ones — show our little show-family at its closest. It’s not making it easy.

I met Cleto in 1994. I was just out of college, on my first tour with Julio Iglesias. We’d play Caesars Palace a few times a year in the old Circus Maximus ballroom, the last of the old Vegas rooms still standing. Cleto’s dad was the valet, the butler backstage. Sammy Davis Jr. had gotten him that job years before, and Julio absolutely loved him. Cleto Sr. spoke Spanish, understood Julio in ways most people didn’t — his needs, his personality. He introduced himself to me right away, the friendliest guy, and he treated us musicians with this deep respect when most people treated us like the help. Only later did I learn he had been a musician himself, which explained everything.

Every time I was backstage, Cleto Sr. would tell me, “You gotta meet my son. He’s in L.A. He’s new to town. You’re the L.A. guy.” And then I came home and started following this band, Cecilia Noel and the Wild Clams. Wild is an understatement. Part Latin, part funky L.A. music, part simulated sex show, part complete insanity. Monday nights, Thursday nights — I was there every chance I got. Cecilia eventually asked me to join; I didn’t need rehearsal. I’d memorized the whole show just by being in the room.

And Cleto Jr. was in that band. Singing, playing sax. We really bonded there. One night after a gig, we all ended up at Jerry’s Famous Deli in Studio City. Cleto was holding court with the backup singers, telling horrible stories about his ex-girlfriend, animated and loose and hilarious. And I remember thinking, How do I not know this guy? He liked the way I played, especially the wah-wah pedal I used on keyboards. We kind of found each other right away — instant click. We became inseparable from that Jerry’s Deli moment.

We started doing everyday life together — cotton commercial auditions with the whole 13-piece band shoved into a tiny casting office (the band didn’t get the spot, but the overweight trumpet player did, which we thought was hilarious). We were broke together. If one of us needed $100 to get through the weekend, whoever had it loaned it. We ended up in the same apartment building — he was downstairs, I was upstairs. We hung out constantly. We built a little act at Café Cordiale on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks, playing twice a month for six years. He was too humble to make a fool of himself onstage, and I had no problem doing that for both of us. That little band became the nucleus of the Cletones.

By the early 2000s, our Cordiale gig had become a kind of valley sensation — part middle-aged pickup joint, part musicians hang, and absolutely packed. Rumor was Jimmy Kimmel was going to get his own show after The Man Show ended. One night Jimmy came in with [executive] Lloyd Braun from ABC. We did our act — R&B, Stevie Wonder, Rufus, some bizarre Borscht Belt rock-and-roll humor. Lloyd stayed for three songs, smiled, left. Next thing we knew, we had a gig. This was late 2002.

Cleto was out with Marc Anthony at the time, and I was juggling touring with Toto and working on The Martin Short Show. But the call came: help build the show open, figure out the music. We all knew most shows aren’t built to last — three weeks and gone. But we knew we loved Jimmy, and we knew we loved Cleto. We were all in.

The early days of Kimmel were chaos. Total party. The green room was a party. The show was trying to be what late night really was in Hollywood, which, it turns out, is not sustainable. We’d get three-week, six-week, nine-week pickups. The smell of pizza at rehearsal meant celebration: We got renewed again. That was how we lived. Two years in, it started to feel like maybe we would stick around.

Cleto had zero experience as a bandleader. None. If you asked him, he’d say, “I just hired the baddest motherfuckers I know and hoped for the best.” And that’s exactly what he did. Thankfully, Toshi [Yanagi],and I had done the Martin Short Show, the Wayne Brady Show, a few pilots — we had enough TV tricks to keep the train on the tracks. And Cleto trusted us. Always. He hired people he knew knew more than he did, which made him the best kind of leader.

Watching him with his dad was something beyond words. His dad had hung up his horn to get a steady job, to raise a family. He hung up his dreams. So when he picked up that horn again — because his son was giving him the stage he deserved — it was powerful. Music did what words could never do. It was soul-to-soul transmission. All of us — me, Toshi, Junior — we’re only children. That bond with a parent is deep. The three of them had this magic triangle. When Senior played with Junior, it was like watching someone step back into the life they were meant to live.

Musically, Cleto loved groove. He loved Stevie Wonder, Rufus, Donny Hathaway, Tower of Power, Sting. He loved the truth. His playing was soulful, genuine — no math, no patterns, no cerebral showing-off. Just purpose and soul. Every note meant something.

We connected deeply on early Late Night With David Letterman — Paul Shaffer, Steve Jordan, Hiram Bullock. If you shared that OG Letterman DNA, you instantly understood each other’s humor, timing, worldview. Letterman was our connective tissue. It fast-tracked me into his life, and honestly into Jimmy’s.

As the show evolved, our music evolved. Early on we were trying to pilfer the KROQ playlist — Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters — instrumental versions that kept the energy young. But as the show grew up, we leaned into what two saxophones are supposed to do. A little more classy, a little jazzier. And Cleto always trusted me to write music that featured what we did well. He gave us freedom. If I needed to miss a show to record a film score, he insisted I go. “You never know how long a show will last,” he’d say. He was never threatened. He just wanted his people to shine.

And now — now that he’s gone — it’s hard to imagine coming back without him. For decades, Toshi, Cleto, and I could communicate entire conversations with a single look. Cultural opposites, but an only-children family. One of us is missing now.

The end was brutal. He got sick, and I won’t go into details, but I’ve never seen doctors and nurses love a patient like they loved him. He knew every RN, every tech, every doctor. Even when he couldn’t communicate, they experienced Cleto through us. They felt his spirit. I’ve never seen medical professionals break down like that. It was a testament to him — his kindness, his light.

Jimmy got everything right in that monologue, except one thing: it was a BB gun, not a shotgun, shooting down kites. Cleto corrected that story eight times. But Jimmy painted the picture. Cleto was humble. He wanted respect, but hated attention. Hard place to live. Those who knew, knew. And he got his flowers.

Trending Stories

Standing next to his dad during that monologue… I’ve never had to try that hard to be the strong one. His dad showed up in a suit, with his horn, ready to play. We played Grover Washington — the solo Cleto had air-saxophoned in his hospital bed just a week earlier. We played a song Cleto and I wrote for his mom 30 years ago. And we were going to play “Hard Times” by Ray Charles. I said to Senior: “That’s kind of your song, are you OK to play it? I thought we would play it without a sax, just as a tribute to you guys.” And his dad said, “You know, Jeff, I always hoped that he would play this when I died. This is wrong. It wasn’t supposed to go this way. But I have to play this for Junior.” And he played like I’ve never heard anyone play.

So we know this wasn’t by choice. He fought until the bitter end to stay here for his family. Last night, his his wife said, “I never wanted to do this alone.” And I said, “You couldn’t be less alone.” He spent a lifetime building friendships — deep, wide, loyal friendships. A chosen brotherhood. And I’m just so lucky I got to be his friend.

Noochie Brings ‘Live From the Front Porch’ to the Kennedy Center

by jummy84 November 13, 2025
written by jummy84

On November 9, rapper and Live From The Front Porch creator Noochie hosted a live version of his performance series at Washington, DC’s venerable Kennedy Center. The event showcased acts like Noochie, The Blackbyrds, R&B singers Christopher Williams and Alex Vaughn, as well as DC legends DJ Kool, Stinky Dink, and “Queen of Go-Go” Ms. Kim performing with the backing of The Front Porch band—bringing the essence of his viral series to a live audience.

The event was originally scheduled for April 2025 but was delayed after President Donald Trump was controversially elected as Board Chair of the Kennedy Center. Many acts have since pulled out of programming at the venue, but as Noochie tells Rolling Stone, he felt compelled to see the show through. He tells us about planning the show, his favorite moments of the night, and what it means to him to have accomplished it.

It felt so “Black family reunion.” The stigma of all the shit around the Kennedy Center was not even a thought. I even said it on stage: “If this was the Sixties, they would call this a sit-in—if you’re somewhere you’re not welcome or supposed to be at.” Nah, we’re supposed to be everywhere we want to go. That’s how I look at it.

I was supposed to start planning the show in August ’24, but there were so many Front Porch shoots we were doing. I was like, with the date being announced in August but originally being April 4, 2025, I’ve got so much time. I’m like, “I’m going to shoot so many Front Porch episodes, it’s no telling who I’ll have relationships with by then who could be part of the show.” We had endless people in that window before I was even thinking about it. So I really wasn’t focused on what the show was going to be.

We got things going when the changing of the guard at the Kennedy Center happened. We ended up postponing the show from April 4 to November 9. We didn’t know what was going to happen. A lot of acts I reached out to weren’t trying to do it because they’re at a certain level and their brand could be impacted. But they also advised me, “You’re not at this established point where this should harm your brand. There’s a lot of opportunity in doing it.”

Editor’s picks

I didn’t do any social media on it. The show did all the numbers without us posting it. I definitely wanted to, but I saw all the comments the Kennedy Center was getting. I believe in the brand already. The show sold out originally, but we ended up pushing it back, so people returned their tickets and had to buy them again. But it was causing confusion where the audience was like, “Are they still doing the show?” I’d rather people just look it up and see if it’s happening versus me inviting this toxic conversation on my social media. People talking shit who aren’t even about to go to the show anyway. I’d rather just do the show, then get to the next one. That’s not what my page is about. I’m the type of nigga to stand up against something or stand for what we stand for. Sometimes everybody might not understand what you’re doing.

I just felt like this was something I had to do as a commitment. I used to go to the Kennedy Center and people would be like, “Man, you gotta bring The Front Porch to the Kennedy Center.” I’m like, “Just tell me who to talk to.” They pointed me in the right direction; I reached out to Simone Eccleston, and we made it happen. It felt like one of those contract negotiations where it’s like, “We’re trying to get it done, I fuck with you. I see what y’all are going through, but we’re going through shit because of this as well.” But we figured it out eventually. I was in there because the employees wanted it in there. And I also thought, man, we’re taking it from the mud to the most prestigious—supposed to be the most prestigious—spot at the time.

Now it’s somewhat of a stain, but it is what it is. Once we pushed it back, we ended up doing another show at Bethesda Theater last month that ended up being our first show, and this was a 500-seater. We had the same style of show, and my manager helped me put that one together from the ground up. That shit was dope and set the precedent of, “Alright, this is what our shows look like.” We’ve been booked for private events where we’ve curated stuff like this before, but these were the first ticketed events open to the public.

I always had an idea of how to run a show—almost similar to the BET Awards or something. I’d host it for a second, do a song, come back out, and it goes back to the other guests. That was always the format. And not telling the crowd who was coming out was always something I wanted to do too. We don’t tell people who we’re dropping for Live From The Front Porch YouTube episodes; we just drop and they take it how they get it. Most of the time that’s exciting to people, and at the live show it’s even more exciting. You’re part of it, and it’s the same thing you’re used to on the computer. The platform is nothing but curation—from the artist that’s on there, the songs they’re doing, the instruments that are up there, the aesthetic, whether it’s night or daytime—it’s all curation. So if you trust that curation, this is the same thing you’re used to.

One of the first acts I thought of was The Blackbyrds. They’re just DC. That was one of my favorite episodes, which I felt was underrated. I appreciate them, and I feel like they appreciate the platform. I reached out to Keith Kilgo and The Blackbyrds, and he said he was down. And then Christopher Williams was here, and we shot his episode a while ago, but we just dropped it a couple weeks ago and it did crazy numbers immediately. I’m like, alright, let’s see if we can get Chris on here too. He’s killing it—he sounds like he just started. So to bring that energy would be dope.

I did about three or four songs. It felt dope to align with stuff that’s already classic and not feel like the opening act—to not have people walking out during the parts they may not be familiar with versus this popular-ass song they’ve known all their life.

The Front Porch band is the musician community in the DMV. I try to keep it local so if Front Porch guests are intrigued by these musicians and want to work with them, they can. For this show, I used the same band that I just shot a Front Porch guest with last week. So the goal is to make it so these people on The Front Porch can branch out. I want to be that vessel for the musicians and for the artists.

My bro, Reginald “Reggie” Grier, is production manager. I pretty much ran point with him on this one. I worked with my guy Will Benitez on the screen, but I pretty much gave direction to everybody. I didn’t say, “Draw this and do that,” but it was like, “Let’s do this type of music. Let’s bring out Stinky Dink on this part, let’s do DJ Kool, let’s bring out Christopher Williams, Blackbyrds—that’s me.” My crew from the video series weren’t required to do much. It wasn’t a production day for them; they could come and enjoy the show. But a lot of the camera crew shot the event. Some of my audio techs were working with their audio techs. Even with the screen, our guys were working with their guys on the screen, so maybe six in total participated.

Watching the crowd from backstage, the venue was empty and then seeing that shit fill up—they had a camera on the crowd and I’m like, “This shit happened.” Even though I could see the tickets sold out before, to see it happen, it’s like, “Damn, okay, they showed up for you.”

After we played the intro video, people appreciated that. And me talking about, “It’s a family reunion,” I’m damn near doing comedy between the sets, just talking. I’m having conversations with the crowd, I’m doing “Tell your neighbor something.” I’m saying, “God is good all the time.” I’m like, “Okay, this is a Black crowd—we good.” The crowd was majority women, but it was so many different age groups. It was like, alright, they all appreciate it. There was so much different shit we gave them. You could see everybody appreciate something different. We ended with a go-go set. By the time we got to that part, everybody was up. Even if they thought it was about to be over, this shit turned back up, and I had Stinky Dink come out. He’s got a DC classic track called “One Track Mind,” and when he came out and hit that with the band, it was like a switch got flipped.

For me, completing this show means, “You got the keys, bro. If you want to get shit done, you can do it. As long as your intent stays pure, why shouldn’t it happen?” I don’t want evil to happen; I just want me and everybody around me to prosper. Everybody is of the culture.

There were a lot of people in that crowd. There were a lot of colors in that crowd. I just had a conversation with an upcoming Front Porch guest, and they called me “enterprise-minded,” and that’s how I feel. This shit’s only happening because you kept coming out here rapping on your porch while it was cold, while it was hot, while people were walking up the street. You’re sitting out here looking like you’re crazy—it was like, this shit’s going to lead to something. Something’s going to happen.

Trending Stories

For the DMV, it lets you know we aren’t just a stop for people to come through, get a bag, and roll out. It’s a hub. It’s an entertainment hub, a music hub, it’s a Black hub. So I feel like this put a magnifying glass on our culture and what we can do and how innovative the DMV is—and DC specifically, because that’s what people are gonna say. I ask every guest, “What made you want to come do The Front Porch?” They say, “I just saw it and wanted to do it.” I was like, bro, that was my goal. I want artists to see this shit and want to come do it.

I’m happy that we passed the controversy now because I feel like we proved something. Through the adversity and the economy, we were still able to have a successful show and a hell of a turnout for this product we built on the porch. I wouldn’t necessarily want to touch the Kennedy Center again. My goal would be to do bigger shows or a Front Porch festival. Sell out Capital One Arena. Take this shit to that level. Make sure that we elevate.

Dharmendra health updates Live: Actor discharged from hospital, Bollywood events cancelled

by jummy84 November 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Dharmendra health updates Live: Dharmendra is going back home today.

Veteran actor Dharmendra, 89, was discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Wednesday morning after his family decided to continue his treatment at home, the doctor treating him told PTI. He had been admitted a few days ago for certain medical tests, though neither the family nor the hospital revealed details about his condition.

On Tuesday, rumours about Dharmendra’s death circulated widely, prompting his family to dismiss the reports and appeal for privacy.

“The media seems to be in over-drive and spreading false news. My father is stable and recovering. We request everyone to give our family privacy. Thank you for the prayers for papa’s speedy recovery,” daughter Esha wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.

Dharmendra’s wife, actor-politician Hema Malini, also condemned the “irresponsible” media coverage of his health in a post on X, calling it “unforgivable.”

“What is happening is unforgivable! How can responsible channels spread false news about a person who is responding to treatment and is recovering? This is being extremely disrespectful and irresponsible. Please give due respect to the family and its need for privacy,” Malini wrote.

Meanwhile, several Bollywood stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, were spotted visiting the veteran actor at the hospital.

The He-Man of Bollywood has a cinematic career spanning over six decades, with more than 300 films to his credit. Dharmendra is celebrated for his performances in classics such as Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Phool Aur Patthar, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Seeta Aur Geeta, Raja Jani, Jugnu, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Dost, Sholay, Pratiggya, Charas and Dharam Veer, among others.

In 2023, he appeared in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar—a romantic comedy starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt as the lead couple, Rocky and Rani. The film revolves around their contrasting personalities and their decision to live with each other’s families for three months before getting married.

Event Engine at Event Tech Live 2025

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

What do we do?

We develop powerful web applications for events that are designed for ease of use. Our tools help organise, market and deliver events – online, in-person or both. We know and love events. We run our own. We sponsor some. We attend loads. We watch, listen, make connections, ask questions and explore better ways of working.

Who are we?

We’re a bunch of tech nerds who love helping organisers and their communities in whatever ways they need.

What’s our ‘why’?

We’re driven to become better people. To grow together as a team with trust, care and honesty, calling out values and skills in one another. And whatever emerges from that – we aim to let it infect and transform every business and every event we touch.

Our products

Event Engine’s Rondayvoo suite presents both ready-to-go and customised web tech for event organisers. Specifically:

  • Rondayvoo Match
An adaptable matchmaking platform for optimised networking – from Hosted Buyer programs to straightforward buyer-supplier or peer-to-peer curated connections.
  • Rondayvoo Builder
Our event website CMS – use-as-they-are or customise the templates. Or we’ll work with you to create an entirely bespoke site infrastructure that does exactly what you need.
  • Rondayvoo Live
A virtual event website ‘framework’ that integrates with an unlimited range of streaming, networking, messaging and interactivity platforms. If one fails, we switch in realtime.

Our approach

We don’t set out to own as much as possible. Making tech that’s easy to integrate is a given. But even moreso, we’re freed from the need to reinvent great things that are already available. We build products in whatever way makes the most sense for our clients – either by making use of existing open source or commercial platforms with a proven track record, or by building our own solution, or creating a blend. Our love for events is matched only by our passion for new and improving web technologies.

Our commitment to quality

We are committed to delivering the highest quality in our applications and services and our own rigorous coding guidelines are adhered to with scrutiny. This means that our team’s dedication to excellence supersedes all product evolution timelines. Each team member is educated, experienced and skilled in their field, ensuring that all projects meet our toughest standards. We thoroughly test our products, explore multiple scenarios, and implement redundancy measures to raise the standards of service delivery and customer satisfaction.
