Erik and Lyle Menendez attracted national attention for their 1993 trial, in which they were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez on August 20, 1989. The brothers shot and killed their parents, claiming they had endured emotional and sexual abuse during their childhood. While incarcerated, both brothers have found love. For the younger sibling, his relationship has even led to fatherhood. Learn more about his stepdaughter and their relationship below.

Chris Morton/Online USA, Inc. JUNE 12, 1999 - SACRAMENTO, CA - Convicted parent-killer Erik Menendez has married a wealthy widow while behind bars. Erik, 28, tied the knot with 37-year-old Tammi Saccoman inside California's Folsom Prison. The bride wore a white trouser suit and the groom wore standard prison garb - a light blue shirt, blue jeans and boots. Erik and his brother Lyle are serving life sentences without parole for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion. The newlyweds are allowed only to hold hands and exchange a quick kiss during visiting hours, four days a week. So much for a honeymoon. Tammi first fell in love with Erik while watching television coverage of his murder trials. After he was sentenced, Tammi made several trips from her home in Minnesota to visit Erik. She moved to Folsom two years ago to be near him and opened a pet store which she runs - incredibly - with the wife of another convicted killer - "Billionaire Boys Club" leader Joe Hunt. Amazingly, Erik's brother Lyle ALSO got married while behind bars. Lyle Wed Anna Eriksson by proxy over the telephone in 1996. Who Is Erik’s Wife?

Erik Menendez has been married to his wife, Tammi Saccoman, since 1999.

Tammi was first married to Chuck Saccoman, and they lived with her teenage daughter from a previous relationship when she began watching the Menendez brothers’ trial on TV in 1993. With her husband’s consent, she started writing letters to Erik, and the two slowly developed a friendship.

In 1996, Tammi discovered that Chuck was allegedly raping her teenage daughter, beginning when she was 15 years old. Chuck turned himself in to the police and died by suicide two days later. At the time of his death, Tammi and her then-husband shared a 9-month-old daughter, Talia.

After Chuck’s death, Tammi and Erik’s correspondence became more serious. They met for the first time in August 1997. Tammi then moved to Sacramento to be closer to Erik and visited him four times a week. The couple got engaged the following year and married in 1999.

Who Is Talia?

Tammi’s daughter, Talia, is now in her 20s and prefers to keep her personal life private. However, she is active on social media, particularly through her Instagram account, @seterikmenendezfree, where she raises awareness about Erik’s case and advocates for his release from prison.

What Is Talia’s Relationship with Erik Like?

On her Instagram account, Talia occasionally shares glimpses of her life with Erik, alongside her focus on the case.

Like her mother, Talia and Erik bonded through letter writing, with Erik offering comfort after the death of her biological father. Today, she refers to Erik as “Dad.”

In 2020, Talia posted a photo of herself with Erik, captioning it: “My dad was more of a dad than most out in the real world.”

Were the Menendez Brothers Released? Update on Lyle and Erik Today – Hollywood Life

In 1989, Lyle and Erik Menendez — then aged 21 and 18, respectively — sparked a highly publicized trial after brutally murdering their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion. The case resurfaced in recent years with renewed interest, largely thanks to Ryan Murphy‘s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, followed by a Netflix documentary that featured previously unreleased phone call recordings between the brothers and director Alejandro Hartmann. With the series, documentaries, and ongoing public interest, many are still wondering if the Menendez brothers have a chance of being released from prison.

After their court hearing was pushed back multiple times in early 2025, their parole hearing is now taking place on August 21 and 22, 2025.

To learn more about their case and where they stand today, keep reading.

What Did Lyle and Erik Menendez Do?

The brothers murdered their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez, in 1989 with shotguns. After committing the crime, Lyle and Erik spent an estimated $700,000 of their inheritance, according to Time Magazine. They became suspects when Erik confessed to their psychologist, Dr. Jerome Oziel, during a therapy session.

Oziel’s mistress, Judalon Smyth, later reported the confession to the police. Despite the doctor-patient confidentiality typically afforded in therapy, Oziel played a significant role in the brothers’ trials, claiming they had threatened his life.

Were the Menendez Brothers Released from Prison?

Lyle and Erik have not been released yet, but they are scheduled for a parole hearing in August 2025. They were originally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, a habeas corpus petition citing new evidence could have led to new sentences for the two siblings. The 2023 petition includes a sworn statement from former Menudo member Roy Rosselló, who alleged that he was sexually assaulted by the brothers’ father, José, in the 1980s. Additionally, the petition highlights a letter Erik wrote to a cousin months before the killings, suggesting he was a victim of abuse. At the time, former District Attorney George Gascón confirmed that a new court hearing was scheduled for November 29, 2024.

Gascón also filed a motion on October 30, 2024, supporting the Menendez brothers’ request for clemency from Governor Gavin Newsom. Describing the brothers as “model prisoners,” Gascón told CNN that he believes there is a strong likelihood they would be granted parole if the case reaches the parole board. An attorney for one of the brothers expressed hope that they could be home in time for Thanksgiving.

However, Gascón was replaced by former federal prosecutor Nathan Hochman, who took office on December 2, 2024. A resentencing hearing, initially scheduled for December 11, 2024, was postponed. On November 25, 2024, Judge Jesic explained that he needed more time to review the case and wanted to give District Attorney Hochman the same opportunity. The new hearing dates were set for January 30 and 31, 2025, but were postponed again.

The Menendez brothers were scheduled to return to court on March 20, 2025, for a hearing to determine if they should be resentenced. However, DA Hochman announced he asked the court to reject Lyle and Erik’s request for a new trial.

“We looked again at the credibility of the letters, particularly this Andy Cano 1988 supposed letter weighed in the continuum of lies, and it calls into drastic question whether this is in fact a 1988 letter written by Erik Menendez to Andy Cano about this sexual abuse,” Hochman said.

In February 2025, ahead of their hearing, California GovernorNewsom urged the parole board to conduct a thorough risk assessment of the Menendez brothers. This investigation will determine whether they would pose a danger to the public if granted parole.

A month later, weeks before their resentencing hearing, Hochman said he did not support the brothers’ possible resentencing and claimed that Lyle and Erik have been telling “lies” for decades. Judge Jesic held a hearing on April 11 to announce that resentencing proceedings would continue on April 17 and 18, 2025.

According to NBC News in Los Angeles, Anamaria Baralt, a cousin of the Menendez brothers, said, “There have been some delays in this process that were unforeseeable, like the wildfires, that, of course, we have great patience for. This is another delay that is not so much, but we will continue to show up as a family.”

On day one of their resentencing hearing, Judge Michael Jesic ruled that the Menendez brothers can be resentenced to 50 years to life, which would effectively make the siblings eligible for parole. The California state parole board would also need to consider the case and issue a ruling on their potential release, which could take months, according to multiple outlets.

Where Are Lyle and Erik Now?

Both Lyle and Erik are at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in California. They were reunited in 2018 at the prison, after initially being sent to separate prisons following their 1996 conviction.

During their time apart, Lyle spoke to People in 2017, sharing that, despite the crime, the ordeal brought them closer. They stayed in touch by playing chess through the mail and writing letters to each other.  “We’re not twins, but when you’ve gone through the kind of chaotic childhood that we had, it’s almost like you are. You have that bond and that shared experience,” he said.

How Long Are Lyle & Erik’s Prison Sentences?

The brothers were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders of their parents. Their trials began in 1993, and they were found guilty in 1996.

Nearly 30 years after Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents, their case is back in court — and this time, they may have a chance at freedom. It began amid renewed public interest, sparked in part by Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. On October 24, 2024, former Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón held a press conference addressing the potential resentencing of the Menendez brothers. Though Gascón was later replaced by Nathan Hochman, who opposed a new trial and attempted to reverse the motion supporting resentencing, a judge resentenced them in May 2025, making them eligible for parole. But as they await their August 21 and 22, 2025, parole hearing, Erik’s lawyer told TMZ that he was battling kidney stones while behind bars and needed to be released immediately.

Hollywood Life has the latest update on Lyle and Erik’s resentencing below.

Were Lyle & Erik Menendez Resentenced?

During an October 24, 2024, press conference, former Los Angeles DA Gascón announced that he had “decided to move forward” with a review of Erik and Lyle Menendez’s case. He also formally recommended that the brothers be resentenced and made immediately eligible for parole.

— NBC News (@NBCNews) October 24, 2024

Gascón explained that resentencing under California law does not necessarily revisit the original crime, but rather evaluates whether the inmate has been rehabilitated and can be safely released into the community.

“There was no excuse for murder,” Gascón said, referring to the 1989 killing of José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez. “Because even if you get abused, the right path is to call police, seek help.” Still, he acknowledged the desperation that many abuse victims experience, noting that some, particularly women, “who have been battered for years … sometimes will murder their abuser.”

“I believe they have paid their debt to society,” Gascon added.

The Menendez brothers were scheduled to return to court on March 20, 2025, for a hearing to determine if they should be resentenced. However, DA Hochman announced he had asked the court to reject Lyle and Erik’s request for a new trial.

Judge Michael Jesic held a hearing on April 11, 2025, to announce that resentencing proceedings would continue on April 17 and 18, 2025. However, on the day the hearings were set to begin, the prosecution argued that a recently completed risk assessment — conducted by the California Board of Parole Hearings at the request of Governor Gavin Newsom — was necessary before the case could move forward. As a result, the hearings were rescheduled to the following month.

On May 13, 2025, Judge Jesic resentenced Lyle and Erik to 50 years to life in prison, which makes them eligible for parole. However, according to multiple outlets, the parole process could take months to years.

When Will Lyle & Erik Menendez Be Released?

It’s still unclear when — or if — the Menendez brothers could be released from prison. Their parole hearing was scheduled to take place in August 2025.

How Old Are Lyle & Erik Menendez?

When the brothers shot their parents in August 1989, Erik was 18, and Lyle was 21. The brothers are now 54 and 57, respectively.

Do the Menendez Brothers Still Have Money?

After more than 30 years behind bars, Lyle and Erik reportedly exhausted any money they once had. Their net worths are currently unknown.

Some still believe that the siblings killed their parents to inherit their money — an accusation that both Lyle and Erik have called inaccurate.

Why Did the Menendez Brothers Kill Their Parents?

Erik and Lyle have maintained the reason for fatally shooting their mother and father. During their 1990s trials, the brothers described the alleged emotional, physical and sexual abuse that they endured during their childhoods. During both of their trials, Erik and Lyle detailed what José allegedly did to them when they were children.

Throughout the trials, defense attorney Leslie Abramson maintained both Erik and Lyle’s claims about the alleged sexual abuse they faced. Although Judge Stanley Weisberg sentenced them to life without the possibility of parole in 1996, Erik and Lyle sought rehabilitation behind bars, which District Attorney Gascón pointed out in October 2024. Additionally, new evidence was handed over to the court for further review. The evidence included two key pieces of information: a letter that Erik had written to his cousin Andy Cano months before he and Lyle killed their parents, admitting how fearful he was of José, and an allegation from former Menudo band member Roy Rosselló, who claimed that he was sexually abused by José when he was a minor.

If you or anyone you know has been sexually abused, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). A trained staff member will provide confidential, judgment-free support as well as local resources to assist in healing, recovering and more.

The Life of a Showgirl: Meaning and Inspiration Explained

While announcing her 12th album would arrive Oct. 3, 2025, Taylor said that she selected just 12 songs for The Life of a Showgirl to keep “the bar really high” and make the record “just right” with a holistic theme (so no, there won’t be more songs coming).

The inspiration was about going “behind the curtain” of the Eras Tour.

“This album was about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during this tour,” Taylor said, “which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant.”

She continued, “It just comes from the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life, so that effervescence has come through on this record.”

On her days off from the tour, Taylor worked with hitmakers Max Martin and Shellback in Sweden to create these “infectious anthems,” including the titular track with Eras Tour opener Sabrina Carpenter.

In addition to “The Life of a Showgirl,” the tracks will be “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Elizabeth Taylor,” “Opalite,” “Father Figure,” “Eldest Daughter,” “Ruin the Friendship,” “Actually Romantic,” “Wi$h Li$t,” “Wood,” “Cancelled!” and “Honey.”

Where, When & How to Watch – Hollywood Life

Islanders will assemble one more time on screen alongside hosts Andy Cohen and Ariana Madix. After all the drama washed up ashore earlier this summer, the season 7 cast of Love Island USA came together for the reunion special, which airs later this month.

Below, Hollywood Life has gathered all the details fans need to know on how to watch the reunion and who will be there.

Who Won Love Island USA Season 7?

The winners of the seventh season of Love Island USA were Amaya Espinal and Bryan Arenales, who took home that highly coveted $100,000 cash prize. As of now, the couple seem to be going strong, but anything could have happened between their re-entry into the real world and the reunion taping.

Bryan and Amaya ended the finale on a high note, with Bryan telling her that he “definitely wanted to leave [the Villa] letting [her] know that [he wanted] to make stuff exclusive with [them] and prioritize [them].”

For her part, Amaya gushed, “I feel like I’m flying in the sky right now. To feel so seen and validated and for people to see how powerful our connection is… And like, boy, was this a ride, here on Love Island. But this, man, I would do this ride all over again if it led me to him.”

How to Watch the Love Island USA Season 7 Reunion

Fans can tune into the Love Island USA season 7 reunion on Peacock just like how they did with all season 7 episodes.

What Time Does the Love Island USA Season 7 Reunion Come Out?

The Love Island USA season 7 reunion episode will air at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on August 25 on Peacock.

Is Cierra Ortega in the Reunion?

Cierra Ortega said she wouldn’t be a part of the reunion special during her TikTok Q&A on July 27.

“At this time, I will not be at the reunion,” she said, adding, “I feel lighter knowing that my perspective, my thoughts and my feelings and my emotions is out there.” She also noted that sharing her story with social media followers was “the first step for [her] in moving on and beginning to close this chapter of [her] life.”

As fans recall, Cierra was booted from the island after fans found an old social media video of her using a racial slur. She apologized publicly after being released from the Villa.

However, Andy said that “everybody” showed up for the reunion, so there’s still a chance that Cierra could be in it. The Bravo king gave his Instagram followers updates from the taping on August 12 via his Instagram Stories. In one clip, Andy said, “Guys, Love Island reunions are no joke. We are on dinner break. It is 9:45. We’re going back in there soon. … This reunion — it’s good. And everybody’s here.”

What Does It Mean for Lyle & Erik? – Hollywood Life

The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José Menendez and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, and were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. But that might change nearly 30 years later. In late 2024, the Los Angeles County District Attorney formally recommended a potential resentencing for Lyle and Erik Menendez. An L.A. judge resentenced the brothers in May 2025, which makes the siblings eligible for parole. Now that a parole hearing is set for August 21 and 22, 2025, learn what this means about their possible release.

What Does Parole Mean?

Parole is also referred to as a provisional release from prison. If a prisoner is granted parole, they are released early on the condition that the inmate agrees to abide by certain rules. For example, they may be required to check in with their parole officer to evaluate whether or not they’ve followed their parole standards and/or restrictions.

Are the Menendez Brothers Getting Out of Prison?

Lyle and Erik have not officially been released from prison. District Attorney George Gascón announced on October 24, 2024, his recommendation to the court “that the life without the possibility of parole be removed, and they would be sentenced for murder,” which indicated that the brothers would be eligible for parole if a resentencing is accepted.

“I believe that they have paid their debt to society,” Gascón said about Lyle and Erik, whom have proved rehabilitation during their time in prison by “creating groups to deal with how to address untreated trauma, creating groups to deal with other inmates that have physical disabilities and may be treated differently,” the DA pointed out.

“Even in one case, Lyle [was] negotiating for other inmates as to the conditions that they live under,” Gascón acknowledged, while clarifying that there is “no excuse for murder.”

The DA further noted the influx of support from the public after Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premiered, and he acknowledged the new evidence supporting the brother’s claims of sexual abuse. In light of this, Gascón explained that while Lyle and Erik’s choice to murder their parents was wrong, they have grown up.

“All this was done by two young people,” the former DA added, referring to when Lyle and Erik were 21 and 18, respectively, when they fatally shot their mother and father. “Now they’re not as young. They had no hopes of ever getting out of prison. … I do believe that the brothers was subjected to a tremendous amount of dysfunction in the home and molestation.”

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman took office in December 2024, and since then, he has adamantly accused the brothers of lying. He told ABC News, “If they sincerely and unequivocally admit for the first time in over 30 years, the full range of their criminal activity and all the lies that they have told about it.”

Nevertheless, an L.A. judge resentenced Lyle and Erik to 50 years to life in prison in May 2025, which effectively made them eligible for parole. Two months later, Erik’s attorney told TMZ he was battling kidney stones and needed to be released from prison immediately.

Can the Menendez Brothers Get Parole?

Since 2018, the brothers have been living at San Diego’s Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. Now that they’ve been resentenced to 50 years to life in prison, they are eligible for parole, which could take months to get.

Erik’s parole hearing took place on August 21, 2025. Lyle’s is set for the next day. At the time of publication, there has been no update on Erik’s hearing.

If you or anyone you know has been sexually abused, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). A trained staff member will provide confidential, judgment-free support as well as local resources to assist in healing, recovering and more.
