How Did Jeffrey Epstein Die? Autopsy, Jail Footage & Suicide Questions – Hollywood Life

Jeffrey Epstein is still making headlines six years after his death. The late disgraced financier and convicted child sex offender’s death has been challenged by conspiracy theorists, who claimed that the jail surveillance footage outside of Epstein’s cell wasn’t reliable. Furthermore, his autopsy report raised eyebrows. So, what really happened to Epstein when he died?

Epstein’s former confidante Ghislaine Maxwell fueled the conspiracy theories when she shared how she thinks he died.

“In prison, where I am, they will kill you, or they will pay — somebody can pay a prisoner to kill you for $25 worth of commissary,” Maxwell said, according to the transcripts and recordings from her conversation with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. “But I don’t know of any reason why, and I don’t believe in the blackmail or in any of this, I don’t think Epstein had a hit on like that. If it is indeed murder, I believe it was an internal situation.”

Learn what we know about Epstein’s death below.

What Was Jeffrey Epstein’s Official Cause of Death?

Epstein’s official cause of death was ruled to be suicide by hanging using a bedsheet, most likely using the top bunk of his bed and pitching himself forward to hang, according to law enforcement. However, conspiracy theorists have challenged this.

On August 10, 2019, Epstein was found dead in his jail cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York City. The Bureau of Prisons said that Epstein was given life-saving measures immediately after he was found, and first responders took him to a hospital. He was pronounced dead that day.

The Department of Justice’s Inspector General’s investigation criticized prison guards and officials, alleging negligence, misconduct, and outright job performance failures” in Epstein’s death, according to multiple outlets.

On the night of Epstein’s death, prison officials did not check on him every 30 minutes. The two guards assigned to Epstein’s cell fell asleep and failed to check on him for around three hours. Moreover, they falsified records to hide their mistake, according to The New York Times.

What Did Epstein’s Autopsy Report Reveal?

Epstein’s autopsy report sparked doubt about his manner of death. Dr. Michael Baden was in the room for Epstein’s autopsy, and he raised questions about the fractures in his larynx and hyoid bone, calling those “extremely unusual in suicidal hangings” and aligning with “homicidal strangulation.”

“There’s evidence here of homicide that should be investigated, to see if it is or isn’t homicide,” Baden said, per PBS. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson, who conducted the autopsy, said she stood “firmly” behind her findings of Epstein’s death.

Were There Signs of Foul Play in Epstein’s Injuries?

As Baden indicated, the injuries to his larynx (located between the throat and the windpipe) and hyoid bone (between between the base of a person’s mandible and their third cervical vertebra) appeared to be signs of foul play.

However, this wasn’t the first time that Epstein tried to kill himself. On July 23, 2019, weeks before his death, Epstein was found semiconscious in his jail cell on the floor with marks on his neck. He was placed on suicide watch. Less than a week later, prison officials took him off of suicide watch and put him in a special housing unit.

Did Jail Surveillance Footage Malfunction?

After conspiracy theorists claimed there was a one-minute gap in Epstein’s surveillance footage, the Department of Justice released the footage in 2025. It only showed the outside of Epstein’s cell the night he died, but no one was seen entering or exiting it.

Who Was Epstein’s Cellmate & What Did He Say?

Epstein’s cellmate in July 2019 was former New York City police officer Nicholas Tartaglione, who was awaiting trial on four counts of murder. Tartaglione was not in the cell where Epstein died, and he was cleared of any involvement in Epstein’s first apparent attempt at suicide.

Epstein was supposed to have a cellmate with him after being moved into a special housing unit. However, that didn’t happen.

If you or someone you know is in emotional distress or considering suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Regina King Opens Up About How Son’s Death Changed Her Outlook On Life

by jummy84 August 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Regina King is opening up about how the death of her son Ian has transformed her perspective on life. The acclaimed actress says the event has led her to be more present and even inspired a meaningful entrepreneurial venture.

In her new Haute Living cover story, the Shirely actress said,

“I think in life, it’s harder and harder to have those meaningful moments. And that’s why, when I have them now, they feel even more special. We have them less and less as time goes on, and we have to work harder to have them.” When speaking about how she lives differently now while carrying grief, she said, “I one thousand percent live in the moment more. I don’t know if that’s something that just comes with time, or with pain, or with the pandemic — probably all of it. But I feel it.”

Her son Ian died by suicide in January 2022 at the age of 26. He was her only child and she shared him with her ex-husband, Ian Alexander Sr..

The Oscar-winning actress is focused on keeping her son’s memory alive in her life, most recently in the form of an orange wine. Her newly launched brand is named MianU — short for “me and you” — and was inspired by the wine Ian introduced her to.

“It was kind of an epiphany I had that came from a place of continuing to create memories in Ian’s spirit. I’m still here, on this plane, separate from him, and I’m surrounded by people talking about their children — engagements, weddings, new chapters — [while mine is gone],” she told the outlet. “I still love talking about Ian: I just don’t have the chance to create new memories in the way they do. But I’m not focused on that. This is my way of creating something new, together.”

The wine is deeply meaningful to her because it reminds her of her son constantly, with each and every moment. “Every time a cork opens, or every time I’m pouring a glass, I’m thinking of Ian. I’m thinking of him 24/7 anyway, but always in this moment, I can see his face. And for people who never got the chance to dance with Ian, maybe they’ll be curious. Maybe they’ll ask. His name is right there, in the middle of it all. He’ll never be forgotten… If you see me, you see Ian,” she said.

Another way the Boondocks talent also aims to keep her son with her at all times is by intentionally speaking “about him in the present, because he’s always with me,” and remembering “the joy and happiness that he gave all of us.”

To shop MianU wines, head to their official site and view King’s announcement here.

Main cast members Lily Collins, Ashley Park, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Lucas Bravo and more are reprising their roles, but production paused in late August when Assistant Director Diego Borella suddenly died while working on set. Local Italian news outlets reported that he collapsed from a “sudden heart attack” while preparing to film a final scene at the Hotel Danieli in Venice, Italy.

Filming has been suspended following Borella’s tragic death, according to Il Messaggero.

Hollywood Life has rounded up everything we know so far about the upcoming season of Emily in Paris.

Will Emily in Paris Take Place In Rome?

Season 5 officially began production in Rome this May, with filming continuing in Italy over the summer before the cast and crew return to Paris later in the season.

At the end of Season 4, Emily relocates to Rome to help open a new Agence Grateau office and spend time with her new love interest, Marcello (played by Eugenio Franceschini). Still, series creator Darren Star confirmed that the show’s title isn’t changing. “Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome… It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris,” he told Tudum by Netflix.

Collins echoed the excitement during a Good Morning America interview on September 16, 2024, saying, “We got to explore Rome, and I’m really hoping that in season five, we get to explore more of Italy.” She added, “We had the best time. The whole cast felt a little bit like Emily did in season one, running around the city wide-eyed, with everything feeling so exciting.”

Emily in Paris Season 5 Cast

Season 5 of Emily in Paris will bring back many fan favorites, with a few notable changes. Collins returns as Emily Cooper, alongside Park (Mindy), Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie), Lucas Bravo (Gabriel), Samuel Arnold (Julien), Bruno Gouery (Luc), William Abadie (Antoine), and Laviscount (Alfie).

Who Are the Menendez Brothers? 5 Things to Know About Lyle & Erik – Hollywood Life

Lyle and Erik Menendez have been serving life sentences for the brutal murders of their parents on August 20, 1989, when the brothers — then 21 and 18 — shot and killed José and Kitty Menendez inside their Beverly Hills mansion.

More than three decades later, the Menendez brothers were thrown back in the spotlight as the focus of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The 10-episode series reexamines the central question at the heart of their case: were they cold-blooded killers motivated by greed, as prosecutors claimed, or victims of years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as the defense argued — and as the brothers still maintain?

On May 13, 2025, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic resentenced Lyle and Erik to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole after serving more than 35 years. Their parole hearings were scheduled for August 2025, and Erik was denied parole, while Lyle still awaits his fate as of August 22, 2025.

Here’s what to know about the Menendez brothers and their infamous case.

Lyle & Erik Menendez Had Promising Futures

At the time of their parents’ murders on Aug. 20, 1989, Lyle was a student at Princeton, and Erik was an incoming freshman at UCLA. The brothers had grown up in Beverly Hills, enjoying a privileged life thanks to their wealthy parents — Jose, a Hollywood executive, and Kitty, a former beauty queen.

Lyle and Erik Were Arrested Seven Months After Their Parents’ Murders

After Jose and Kitty were found brutally shot to death in their Beverly Hills mansion, Lyle and Erik spent money recklessly, burning through an estimated $700,000 of their parents’ wealth on cars, jewelry, and even purchasing restaurants and cafes. But their eventual downfall occurred when Erik confessed to his psychiatrist, Jerome Oziel, who then shared the information with his mistress, Judalon Smyth. Smyth informed the police, revealing that Erik had confessed to the murders in therapy and that there were audiotaped recordings of the confession. The brothers were subsequently arrested in March 1990, sparking a multi-year legal battle over the admissibility of Oziel’s recordings.

“I never thought I believed in evil, but when I heard those boys speak, I did,” Smyth told investigative journalist Dominic Dunne in 1990.

Lyle & Erik Were Convicted of First-Degree Murder

The brothers claimed at trial that their father — who was nearly decapitated by a point-blank blast from a 12-gauge shotgun — was a violent pedophile. These allegations were backed by testimony from two of the brothers’ cousins, Andy Cano and Diane Vander Molen, who said Lyle and Erik had confided in them about the sexual abuse when they were children. As for their mother, who was shot 14 times, the brothers said she was an alcoholic and enabled and encouraged her husband’s abuse.

Their first trial, which began in 1993, ended in a deadlocked jury. In the second trial, the judge limited testimony about the alleged abuse and barred the jury from considering manslaughter charges instead of murder. Both brothers were convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“Erik and Lyle Menendez have been incarcerated for 34 years and six months, and I believe that they are in prison for killing their lifelong abusers,” said Robert Rand, who has spent considerable time with the brothers since the crime and is the author of The Menendez Murders: The Shocking Untold Story of the Menendez Family and the Killings that Stunned the Nation.

“The correct verdict for the Menendez brothers’ trial should have been manslaughter, not murder.”

Lyle & Erik Both Married While in Prison

Despite their brutal crime and life behind bars, there was no shortage of women interested in the Menendez brothers. Lyle married Anna Eriksson on July 2, 1996, but they divorced on April 1, 2001, after she discovered he was “cheating” on her with another woman through a pen pal relationship (as conjugal visits are not allowed). In November 2003, Lyle married Rebecca Sneed, a former magazine editor turned attorney. They had been in contact for nearly a decade before marrying in a ceremony at Mule Creek State Prison. Despite their 2024 separation, Sneed continues to support Lyle and advocates for his and Erik’s release.

Erik also found love, marrying wife Tammi Ruth Saccoman on June 12, 1999, at Folsom State Prison.

Lyle & Erik Menendez Have Amassed a Huge Following

Nearly 35 years after murdering their parents, a significant number of teens are calling the brothers’ sentence unfair and unjust. The account menendezsupporterrr—which demands “Justice for the Menendez brothers”—has over 12.9M likes and 258.1K followers. Another account, ..menendezbrothers, states in its bio, “They are victims. don’t sexualize them,” and has 109.1K followers and 9.6M likes.

Lyle Menendez has been denied parole one day after his younger brother, Erik Menendez, had the same result. The brothers, who fatally shot their parents, Kitty and José Menendez in 1989, were initially sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. But that changed earlier this year during a May resentencing hearing when a judge made them eligible for parole. Supporters are still rallying around the Menendez brothers and advocating for their release, as many wonder why Lyle and Erik were denied a chance to walk free.

Find out why Lyle was denied parole and what this means for him and Erik below.

Why Was Lyle Menendez Denied Parole?

Like his younger brother, Lyle was denied parole. The board informed Lyle that they rejected his possibility for parole because there “are still signs” that he is a risk to the public, Parole Commissioner Julie Garland said during the Friday, August 22 hearing, according to multiple outlets.

“We find your remorse is genuine,” Julie continued. “In many ways, you look like you’ve been a model inmate. You have been a model inmate in many ways who has demonstrated the potential for change. But despite all those outward positives, we see you still struggle with anti-social personality traits like deception, minimization and rule breaking that lie beneath that positive surface.”

Julie offered Lyle some hopeful remarks in the end. She advised him, “Don’t ever not have hope. … This denial is not … it’s not the end. It’s a way for you to spend some time to demonstrate, to practice what you preach about who you are, who you want to be.”

What Were Lyle Menendez’s Prison Violations?

Julie noted that Lyle’s “rule breaking” behind bars was part of the board’s reason for denying him — specifically, his illegal long-term use of a cell phone. Julie told Lyle that he lost family visit privileges because of his illegal possession of a phone in March 2024, which he did not argue. Instead, Lyle tried to defend his mobile phone use, saying he tried to stay in touch with his family and that he didn’t believe the phone was harmful to anyone.

Lyle also acknowledged that August 20 was the anniversary of his parents’ murder, calling it a “crushing day for so many in [his] family.”

“I think about all the phone calls on that day with the shattering news and the loss and the grief,” Lyle added.

Why Was Erik Menendez Denied Parole? His Prison Violations

Parole Commissioner Robert Barton told Erik that he was denied parole because of multiple violations throughout his prison sentence, including having at least three altercations with other inmates, committing tax fraud in 2013, smoking marijuana and using supplies to make wine, using a mobile phone, allegedly having “excessive physical contact” with his wife, Tammi Menendez, and having art supplies inside his cell.

“Contrary to your supporters’ beliefs, you have not been a model prisoner, and frankly we find that a little disturbing,” Robert told Erik during his 10-hour hearing.

Lyle Menendez managed to find love during his prison sentence. After divorcing his first wife, Anna Erikkson, Lyle married his second wife, Rebecca Sneed, in November 2003. Despite presenting a united front while Lyle and his brother, Erik, awaited their resentencing trial, Rebecca announced in November 2024 that they she and Lyle separated “a while” ago. Supporters of Lyle and Erik naturally wondered what led to his and Rebecca’s split.

Hollywood Life is breaking down Lyle and Rebecca’s separation below.

Is Lyle Menendez Married in 2025?

It is unclear what Lyle’s legal marriage status is as of 2025. He was still legally married to Rebecca in November 2024. However, Rebecca stated in a Facebook post that they had separated and remained friends.

“Lyle and I have been separated for a while now but remain best friends and family,” Rebecca wrote in the post on November 22, 2024. “I continue to run his Facebook pages, with input from him, and I am forever committed to the enduring fight for Lyle and Erik’s freedom, as has been so evident over the years.”

Lyle’s now-estranged wife added that she will “continue to update you all on the progress of the case” because she believes “we all have the common goal of seeing the guys walk free!”

“I will never stop fighting for them,” Rebecca vowed at the end of her statement.

Why Did Lyle Menendez & Rebecca Sneed Break Up?

After cheating rumors circulated online about Lyle’s marriage, Erik’s stepdaughter, Talia, took to her Instagram Stories to “share something important.” She did not mention Lyle by name in her message. However, Talia’s followers took her statement as a hint.

“I want to make it clear that Erik and Lyle are two separate individuals,” Talia pointed out. “The decisions of one brother shouldn’t overshadow the truth about the other. I’d appreciate it if people would consider my dad for who he is, and not based on the actions of someone else.”

As for Rebecca, she insisted in her Facebook post that she and Lyle did not split due to infidelity.

“Guys, this is NOT a cheating scandal,” Rebecca wrote.

Does Lyle Menendez Have a Girlfriend?

It’s unclear if Lyle is officially dating anyone while separated from Rebecca. However, the Daily Mail reported on November 21, 2024, that Lyle was in a relationship with 21-year-old University of Manchester student Milly Bucksey. According to the outlet, Lyle allegedly met her through a Facebook group run by Rebecca, and Milly has visited Lyle in prison at least once.

His Current Relationship Status & Ex-Wives – Hollywood Life

Lyle Menéndez and his brother, Erik Menéndez, are best known for their highly publicized 1993 trial over the murders of their parents. The brothers shot and killed their mother, Mary Louise “Kitty,” and father, José, claiming they were victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents. Despite their life sentences, the Menendez brothers still attracted significant attention from the public, including a few women. In fact, both brothers married while behind bars, with Lyle actually marrying twice.

Here’s everything you need to know about Lyle’s relationship history with two women while serving his life sentence.

Who Is Anna Erikkson?

Lyle’s first wife, Anna Eriksson, was born in Chicago and began modeling as a teen for Lord & Taylor before transitioning to modeling in Europe during the 1980s, as she told PEOPLE in 1996.

Eriksson explained that she first wrote to Lyle during his trial, sending a message that read, “Hang tough,” which started their correspondence. “All I can say is that we’ve connected, even though we’ve never touched,” she told the outlet. Eriksson moved to L.A. to be closer to Lyle, and they were married on July 2, 1996, just before he and his brother were convicted of their parents’ murders.

However, the Los Angeles Times reported that the California Department of Corrections did not “recognize the wedding” and deemed it “not a legal marriage” since it took place over the phone. On April 1, 2001, it was announced that Lyle and Anna had filed for divorce. Eriksson reportedly decided to end their marriage after discovering Lyle’s romantic involvement with another woman — Rebecca Sneed.

Who Is Rebecca Sneed?

Similar to Eriksson, Menendez and Sneed began their relationship through letters. On November 20, 2003, Lyle married Rebecca, a former magazine editor who had transitioned into a defense attorney from Sacramento. They had been corresponding for nearly a decade before their wedding, which took place in the visiting area of California’s Mule Creek State Prison.

Despite the challenges of their unique situation, Lyle described his past marriage to Sneed as “healthy” and “built around finding creative ways to communicate.” During ABC’s Truth and Lies: The Menendez Brothers, he shared, “I’ve found I can have a healthy marriage that is complicated and built around conversation and finding creative ways to communicate, sharing, without all the props that are normally there in marriage in terms of going out to dinner and having as much intimate time together and so on.”

He added, “One thing I’ve learned is that your physical comfort is much less important than your connection with the people around you.”

During a past interview with People, Lyle explained, “Our interaction tends to be very free of distractions, and we probably have more intimate conversations than most married spouses do. We try and talk on the phone every day, sometimes several times a day. I have a very steady, involved marriage that helps sustain me and brings much peace and joy. It’s a counter to the unpredictable, very stressful environment here.”

Acknowledging the challenges Rebecca faced, Lyle said, “People are judgmental, and she has to put up with a lot. But she has the courage to deal with the obstacles. It would be easier to leave, but I’m profoundly grateful that she doesn’t.”

Is Lyle Menendez Still Married?

According to Rebecca, she and Lyle separated “a while” ago, she wrote in a Facebook post on November 22, 2024, per E! News.

“Lyle and I have been separated for a while now but remain best friends and family,” Rebecca explained in her Facebook post. “I continue to run his Facebook pages, with input from him, and I am forever committed to the enduring fight for Lyle and Erik’s freedom, as has been so evident over the years.”

After vowing to keep supporters updated on Erik and Lyle’s upcoming hearing, Rebecca clarified, “This is NOT a cheating scandal.” She was seemingly referring to the online rumors that her estranged husband had cheated on her with a younger woman.

Rebecca’s social media post contradicts what Lyle said about their marriage weeks prior. According to a statement obtained by NBC News, Lyle reflected on his experience being a husband while still in prison.

“This coming November will be my 20th wedding anniversary,” Lyle wrote in his statement. “Learning to be a husband and a partner from inside a prison has been challenging. It has also changed my life in so many positive ways. … Her unwavering support and belief in me is something I am most grateful for and has played no small part in my journey to be a better person.”

Is Erik Menendez Married?

As for Lyle’s brother, Erik, he has been married to his wife, Tammi Saccoman, since 1999. Erik met Tammi while in prison, and the two began their relationship through letters.

Erik Menendez was denied parole three months after his and brother Lyle Menendez‘s successful resentencing hearing. The court deemed Erik, 54, a moderate risk to the community if released from San Diego, California’s Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. Meanwhile, supporters of the brothers — who have been incarcerated since 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez — were shocked about the results of Erik’s Thursday, August 21, hearing. After all, he’s obtained a college degree and participated in volunteer programs while serving his original life sentence. So, why was he denied parole?

Below, Hollywood Life has gathered all the information we know about Erik’s failed parole hearing and the court’s decision.

Why Was Erik Menendez Denied Parole?

Erik was denied parole because the parole board considers him a moderate risk to the community outside of prison, and they cited his prison violations.

Erik Menendez’s Prison Violations: What Were They?

According to Parole Commissioner Robert Barton, Erik has multiple prison violations that contributed to the board’s decision to reject him.

“Contrary to your supporters’ beliefs, you have not been a model prisoner, and frankly we find that a little disturbing,” Barton told Erik during the 10-hour hearing, for which Erik appeared via video call.

The following are some of Erik’s prison violations:

  • At least three altercations while in prison
  • His 2013 tax fraud
  • Having art supplies, wax candles and spray paint inside his cell
  • Allegedly having “excessive physical contact” with wife Tammi
  • Smoking marijuana in his cell with another inmate
  • Using supplies to make wine in prison
  • Use of a mobile phone

Barton pointed out during Erik’s hearing that he’s been involved in at least three fights or altercations while behind bars. One happened in November 1997 with a person Barton identified as “Mr. Brown” after Erik was transferred to the RDJ Correctional Facility.

“I was guilty of mutual combat. I fought back,” Erik admitted during the hearing, according to multiple outlets.

Barton later questioned Erik about the tax fraud he committed in 2013, which Erik defended he was coerced to plan due to an imminent threat from a prison gang.

“I was in tremendous fear,” Erik said while claiming that one of his friends in prison was stabbed and raped by the gang in question. “This was a great opportunity to align myself with them and to survive.”

In February 2018, Erik invited a person into his cell to smoke marijuana, Barton said. It was also revealed that he had supplies in his cell to make wine, to which Erik admitted was because he felt “miserable” in prison.

Barton later pointed to Erik’s violation of using a cell phone, saying, “The phone, again, in the abstract, it’s easy for the people on the outside to look at that and go, ‘What’s the big deal?’ [But that] doesn’t change the fact that you knew what you were doing, and you knew why you were doing it.”

Lastly, Erik was also found with his wife, Tammi Menendez, engaging in “excessive physical contact” inside the prison chapel while her then-9-year-old daughter, Talia, was in the room. Erik defended himself by saying, “I was pushing the line occasionally in the visiting room with my wife because I was attracted to her, and we had sexual feelings for one another, and we had no way to really express those.” However, Erik maintained that he and Tammi did not engage in sexual activity and said they just “snuggled” while Talia read a book in the room.

Barton concluded that Erik’s “institutional misconduct showed a lack of self-awareness.”

Does Erik Menendez Have a Child?

Erik does not have a biological child, but he is a stepdad to his wife Tammi’s daughter, Talia, whom she had from a previous relationship. Talia is an adult now.

Did Lyle Menendez Get Parole?

Lyle’s fate will be decided on August 22, 2025, one day after his younger brother’s parole was denied.
