Venice 2025: ‘Kim Novak’s Vertigo’ Reexamines the Actress’ Legacy

by Alex Billington
September 2, 2025

This is the story of a beloved Hollywood actress and her life off screen outside of her movies. Kim Novak is the award-winning star of Hitchcock’s all-timer mystery thriller classic Vertigo, and tons of other classic movies like Pushover, Picnic, The Man with the Golden Arm, Pal Joey, Jeanne Eagels, Strangers When We Meet, Kiss Me Stupid, and many others. She’s now 92 years old and still going strong. Kim Novak’s Vertigo is a brand new documentary featuring Kim Novak reflecting back on her life in Hollywood before she left the film business for good in the 1970s. She got tired of being treated as simply a pretty woman. It’s the latest creation from Swiss doc filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe, known for his many acclaimed doc films about cinema history – including 78/52 (about Hitchcock’s Psycho), Memory: The Origins of Alien, Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist, Lynch/Oz, and this year’s Chain Reactions. Alexandre was lucky enough to befriend Kim – she literally talks about how she feels connected to him when he sits down to interview her in her home. This fascinating film is about identity and how Hollywood steals it. And about how she was able to discover herself in roles, even if she ended up getting tired of acting after decades of acclaimed work.

Novak’s original name was Marilyn Pauline Novak (her parents were of Czech descent); she took the name “Kim Novak” as a stage name when she entered Hollywood in 1954 after signing with Columbia Pictures. The film comes in at a brisk 77 minutes, and starts out with a fairly quick biopic look at her early days and life before arriving at Vertigo. Alexandre O. Philippe is not known for making linear, straight-forward docs and this is no exception. His narrative bounces around from Kim telling stories and leaving voice messages for him in modern times, to her work on Vertigo which was the first film Alexandre fell in love with while growing up, to her early days in Hollywood and acting legacy. Not much time is spent outside her film career – it never really explains what she has been doing since she left Hollywood in the 1970s. The real focus of Alexandre’s film is on her identity, which is especially unique because it’s also related to the three different characters she plays in Vertigo: Carlotta, Madeleine, and Judy. Novak reveals that she actually does not like being looked at and hated being the beautiful blonde of cinema, but of course did her best to play the roles anyway. She also discusses how she felt like more of a “reactor” than an actor. Alexandre is best at working in hundreds of film clips that perfectly depict whatever she is explaining about herself or her performances.

Many actresses, especially from this era, have talked about how much they despised the “beautiful starlet” status they were assigned as Hollywood actors controlled by studios. And ultimately this is what she got so tired of & why she left, which she repeats often. She also repeats over & over how much she had to fight to stay true to herself, and be herself, and stick to her own values & identity. The only problem is that for all this film gets into, she never actually explains what those values are and what “being herself” really means. Other than the fact that she is a huge animal lover – at one point she had a pet goat, and also a pet bluebird and dogs. Nonetheless, Kim Novak’s Vertigo is a heartfelt, touching, wholesome film featuring Novak being wonderfully honest about her life and her choices and her performances. There is obviously plenty of time spent on Vertigo, analyzing everything about her character & costumes. And most importantly, she explains how making this film with Alexandre allowed her to finally appreciate who she is all of these years later. it’s rather beautiful to see. This doc may only be enjoyed by die-hard film geeks and Kim Novak fans, but there’s still something endearing about watching her open up & speak freely about being a movie star. She seems so creative & charming. And I hope her life’s choices will inspire more woman to stay true to who they are, too.

“It Was a Crazy Scene and I was in Heaven”—Gene Pressman on Writing the Legacy of Barneys

Sure! I just watched his series about Mussolini, which is extremely good.

He’s a brilliant English director, and I really wanted an English director. If you read the book you’ll know I’m a film maniac, and during that ’67 to ’73 film enlightenment the English were so incredible, and even if Stanley Kubrick wasn’t English he lived there and was part of it…

I enjoyed your description in the book of going to see 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time while at college, high on acid: that must have been quite impactful. And then before you started at Barneys, you went to try and break into Hollywood at the dawn of the 1970s and were offered a porn audition by the producer of Deep Throat. These are just two of many personal episodes, from Woodstock to Studio 54 and onwards that put you right at the heart of the wider American story of the time.

I was really lucky to live at certain moments, exactly at the right age, at the right time, and to experience them. You know, I had nothing to do with it, other than being there, obviously.

How did this influence your work alongside your grandfather Barney, your father Fred, and your brother Bob at Barneys?

Well it wasn’t just about the American experience. I think that the more you can absorb in terms of other cultures and other people’s point of views from all over the world, and then bring it back and sort of put it in a mixer within an American sort of mentality is really, it’s a very special thing. Because Americans, for the most part, have been very lucky with this extraordinary sense of freedom to do whatever they want. That’s why, culturally, they’ve created so much, you know, because they’re not, they don’t have the same restraints, if you will. Whereas Europe benefits a great deal from its history of culture and that amazing sensibility, but this does cramp their style a little bit on the other hand, you know, but we won’t get into that.

For the fashion reader, a chunk of this book’s interest lies in hearing how first Fred and then you traveled the world with your colleagues from Barneys looking for the treasures your instinct told you could really excite your home audience. I love the stories about Dries, Alaïa, Paul Smith, Kenzo and Yohji Yamamoto for instance…

New Edition Reflects On Legacy Amid Street Renaming In Boston Hometown

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

August 30 will officially be known as “New Edition Day” in Boston.

The acclaimed, pioneering R&B sextet celebrated the honor along with a street naming ceremony in Roxbury, Massachusetts, where the the group was founded. “New Edition Way” will be housed at the corner of Ambrose and Albany Streets near Orchard Gardens (formerly Orchard Park Projects).

“It’s prestigious without a doubt,” Johnny Gill told VIBE of the feat. “To just know that 42 years of what we’ve done here as a group […] there’s a level of contribution that has been made from each and every one of us. When you look at this type of prestige, it’s written in stone. [Our impact] can’t be erased […] The hard work that’s been put in here has paid off in a great way.”

Michael Bivins, who was raised in those housing projects, reflected on a fonder, full circle memory. “The center where it’s going to happen at, that’s where we met,” he shared. “We used to eat in that center. We would get a free meal if you was in the gym […] and a lot of us was taking trays if food was left over.”

He continued, “To have the street [renaming] is one thing, but to have [it] right in front of the gym is another thing.”

Ronnie DeVoe praised his uncle, Brooke Payne, for being the true visionary behind New Edition and laying the foundation for their longevity. He noted, “It’s a testament to the gifts that God gave us and the talents that God gave us and Uncle B honing those skills to the point where the rough turned into the diamonds that we are today. To connect to our city and be recognized with something that’s going to be there forever is truly amazing.”

Not only did the men discuss the present commemoration like the community block party and giveaways, but also pondered how New Edition Day would be celebrated in the future. Considering it’s so close to their group anniversary (Sept. 9), they agreed that the celebration will be “ongoing” and most likely, combined— but not in a traditional sense.

Bivins spoke the different neighborhoods within the city of Boston that most people stay away from and confessed that his goal is unity across the board with New Edition at the forefront.

“There’s people in certain hoods that don’t go to certain places and it’s just what it is. It’s been that way for years. If we could find neutral zones to celebrate, that’s what I hope we do with years to go,” he explained.

For those unfamiliar with Boston territories, Bivins compared his neighborhood to New York City. “Roxbury is considered like Harlem. Queens is like Dorchester and Brooklyn is kind of considered like Dorchester [or] Mattapan.”

Despite Ricky Bell, Bobby Brown, and Ralph Tresvant not being present for the conversation, Gill, Bivins, and DeVoe confessed that New Edition still has new dreams that they want to see come true— like getting inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame among other things. They also just want to continue to remain in good health and spirits.

Bivins added, “I think that’s so important for us because of the taxing that it takes to be New Edition and the commitment that it takes. The fact that we’re living to talk to each other is just so important. Those are the things that I think are in front of us that keeps us being unique and trendsetters and just being special.”

Overall, similar to Jermaine Dupri’s recent praise of New Edition, they all agree, “It’s about time.”

John Fogerty to Play CCR Songs on “Legacy” Tour Dates

by jummy84 August 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Earlier this month, John Fogerty revisited his rich, rich past with the release of Legacy: the Creedence Clearwater Revival. Featuring 20 re-recorded CCR classics — including “Fortunate Son,” “Bad Moon Rising,” and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” — the album is very much about the iconic singer further cementing his place in music history.

But the 80-year-old also isn’t done forging his creative future, and as such, he’ll be bringing Legacy on the road this fall. The down-home fun begins on Halloween in Atlantic City and visits Nashville, Atlanta, Virginia Beach, and Newark, among other cities, before winding down November 14th in Boston. These 11 shows are being touted as “Legacy dates,” and remain separate from previously-announced dates in late September/early October.

Tickets for Fogarty’s “Legacy” tour dates go on sale beginning Wednesday, August 27th via Ticketmaster. Fans can also look for deals or get tickets to sold-out shows via StubHub, where orders are 110% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.

Legacy only came to because, after several decades, Fogerty owns the CCR catalog (more recently acquiring the masters). A press statement called the record a “full-circle moment,” with Fogerty himself saying that the LP is “my way of celebrating that — of playing these songs on my terms, with the people I love.” (Fogerty co-produced the record with his son, Shane Fogerty.) The other people Fogerty “loves” include collaborators Matt Chamberlain, Bob Malone, Bob Glaub and Rob Stone (which may serve as indication of Fogerty’s backing band on the road). Below, check out one song from Legacy, an especially stirring new take on “Bad Moon Rising.”

LEGENDS COME ALIVE!” – ‘Songs Of Paradise’ Trailer OUT With Soni Razdan, Saba Azad Honoring Raj Begum’s Legacy! | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 August 25, 2025
written by jummy84

The trailer of Songs of Paradise, featuring Saba Azad and Soni Razdan, is out, giving a poignant look into the life and legacy of Padma Shri awardee Raj Begum, the first female playback singer of Kashmir. Directed by renowned filmmaker Danish Renzu and co-authored with Niranjan Iyengar and Sunayana Kachroo, the film is a tribute to the legendary voice which transcended barriers and inspired generations of valley artists.

A Song of Brave Hearts and Melody
The narrative follows Noor Begum, essayed by Saba Azad and Soni Razdan in two different time frames, from a budding young singer to a tenacious cultural icon. Against the canvas of Kashmir, Noor’s life is about challenging social limitations, following dreams, and the redemptive forces of music. Her narrative is enriched by soulful songs by Abhay Sopori and Masrat Un Nissa’s haunting voice, bringing Kashmir’s rich musical heritage to life.

Saba Azad, who plays the younger Noor, described the role as a revelation. “As a singer, I was unaware of the phenomenon that is Raj Begum. This movie opened my eyes to her journey and her contribution. Songs of Paradise is not only a music story but also a tale of female strength and independence,” she said.

Honoring a Legacy
Veteran actress Soni Razdan, who plays the mature Noor Begum, called the experience deep. “The script touched me immediately. Playing Noor was all about harnessing the decades-long strength and cultural pride. This film is a strong reminder of Kashmir’s musical past,” she said.

Cast and Direction
Directed by Nicandra Alkemade for Excel Entertainment, Songs of Paradise is produced by Apple Tree Pictures Production and Renzu Films Production. The cast, which includes Zain Khan Durrani, Sheeba Chaddha, Taaruk Raina, Shishir Sharma, and Lillete Dubey, joins Azad and Razdan in a real star-studded cast.

“An extraordinary documentary about an extraordinary film.” Dark Sky Films debuted the official trailer for a documentary film titled Chain Reactions, another cinema history geek-out doc from the acclaimed filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe (best known for 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene, Memory: Origins of Alien, Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist, Lynch/Oz, and ohters). This premiered at last year’s 2024 Venice Film Festival and played at a bunch of other fests including Sitges, London, Denver, + Beyond Fest. Fifty years after Tobe Hooper’s iconic horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre shocked the world and forever changed the face of global cinema and popular culture, Chain Reactions charts the film’s profound impact and lasting influence. Featuring in-depth interviews with horror & experts and cinephiles including: Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King, and Karyn Kusama, each discussing aspects of the film and its impact on pop culture. It’s not just a love letter to the classic OG Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie (and the influence it had on genre movies forever) it’s a deeper look at the creation of this seminal work of horror cinema. This one is a must watch for any & all cinephiles.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Alexandre O. Philippe’s doc film Chain Reactions, from YouTube:

Chain Reactions Doc Poster

50 years after Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre shocked the world and forever changed the face of global cinema and popular culture, Chain Reactions charts the film’s profound impact and lasting influence on five great artists – Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King, & Karyn Kusama – through early memories, sensory experiences, childhood trauma. By crafting a dynamic dialogue between contemporary footage and never-before-seen outtakes, and also delving into personal impressions triggered by distinct audiovisual formats (16mm, 35mm, VHS, digital), Chain Reactions goes to the heart of how a scruffy, no-budget independent film wormed its way into our collective nightmares and permanently altered the zeitgeist. Chain Reactions directed by acclaimed Swiss filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe, director of many cinema history doc films: The People vs. George Lucas, The Life & Times of Paul the Psychic Octopus, Doc of the Dead, 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene, Memory: Origins of Alien, Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist, Lynch/Oz, The Taking, You Can Call Me Bill previously. Produced by Kerry Deignan Roy. This first premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival last year. Dark Sky Films releases Chain Reactions in select US theaters starting on September 19th, 2025. “I need to become more than a man… I need to become – a symbol.” TT Games has launched the official trailer for a video game called LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight arriving sometime in 2026 next year. FS usually doesn’t cover video games, but we’re making an exception this once – because this game is directly connected to all of the Batman movies over the years. They already made The Lego Batman Movie back in 2017, as well as the Lego Batman: The Videogame in 2008, with many game sequels over the years. It’s an open world game that begins with a young Bruce Wayne training under the League of Shadows and follows his transformation into Gotham City’s protector. Players will team up with iconic allies such as Jim Gordon, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul, while facing down the Dark Knight’s most infamous Rogues Gallery, including The Joker, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Bane, Ra’s al Ghul. DC’s Jim Lee praised the project as a “love letter to Batman’s legacy.” This trailer features recognizable shots recreated in the LEGO Batman game style from the movies Nolan’s Batman Begins & The Dark Knight, Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Burton’s Batman & Batman Returns, and everything related to The Caped Crusader. Check it out.

Games. The game will be available on PlayStation5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam & Epic Games Store). The LEGO Batman series was originally introduced in 2006 as a toy line, eventually becoming an animated series after Batman was featured in The LEGO Movie in 2014 (and his own movie later). LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will feature seven playable characters, including Batman, Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, Talia al Ghul. The video game will be available starting sometime in 2026. For more info & updates, visit the official site.
