Sony Pictures International to Unveil IP Adaptation Strategy at Tokyo

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Sony Pictures International Productions is set to showcase its IP adaptation playbook at the Tokyo International Film Festival‘s TIFFCOM content market, with executive VP of creative production and head of SPIP Shebnem Askin leading a deep dive into the studio’s strategy for turning local hits into global franchises.

The session comes as international interest in IP adaptations reaches fever pitch across the content industry. SPIP, which has carved out a distinctive niche producing local-language films across 10 countries, will pull back the curtain on how it strategically develops remake projects and localizes IP across diverse markets.

Askin’s presentation will spotlight SPIP’s track record of cross-cultural adaptations, including the Spanish remake of Argentine IP “Ten Days Without Mom” (“Padre No Hay Más Que Uno”), the Spanish reimagining of Italian property “I Hate Summer,” and multiple adaptations of French IP “Price of Parenting” in Italy, Mexico and Spain. The studio has also produced a Thai remake of “50 First Dates,” a Brazilian version of “Friends with Benefits,” and Italian and Mexican remakes of SPIP’s German production “25 km/h.”

Japanese IP figures prominently in SPIP’s strategy. The division recently produced a Mexican adaptation of “Shall We Dance?” and secured international distribution rights for the Chinese remake of “YOLO,” the comedy-drama from China’s top-grossing female director Jia Ling.

Under Askin’s leadership, SPIP has built a robust theatrical business anchored by three local-language franchises: the “3 Investigators” movies in Germany, “Father is the Only One” in Spain, and the powerhouse “Kingdom” franchise in Japan. Recent releases include Korean thriller “Highjack, 1971,” Taiwanese feature “Dead Talents Society,” Mamoru Hosoda’s “Scarlet,” and the studio’s first Thai production.

Beyond theatrical releases, SPIP has delivered 11 direct-to-streaming movies for Amazon Prime, Netflix and Max in Mexico over the past three years, including Argentine film “The Heart Knows” and Netflix Italy originals “The Price of Family” and its sequel “The Price of Nonna’s Inheritance.”

The newly rebranded Tokyo IP Market: Adaptation & Remake launches its first open pitch session featuring Kadokawa, Kodansha, Shufu to Seikatsu Sha, Square Enix, Toei and Nihonbungeisha. The expanded market now includes visual content production companies alongside publishers holding original rights to Japanese manga and novels. Other highlighted programming includes a keynote from Tetsu Fujimura on the “One Piece” live-action adaptation and Japanese IP, Japanese animation seminars featuring Studio4°C, and the MPA/DHU/TIFFCOM Pitching Contest with “Elvis” producer Schuyler Weiss among the judges. The Tokyo Gap-Financing Market has selected 23 projects for presentation.

TIFFCOM is organized by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and Unijapan.

The 22nd edition of TIFFCOM runs Oct. 29-31 at Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center Hamamatsucho-Kan during the Tokyo International Film Festival. The market aims to foster international co-productions and content business development through seminars, project markets, pitch contests and networking opportunities.

International Impact Book Awards Bring Literary Glamour to Hollywood

Hollywood rolled out the red carpet for a new kind of star at the International Impact Book Awards Author of the Year Gala, an unforgettable evening that celebrated the power of words, courage, and human transformation. Held for the very first time in Hollywood, the event was hailed by many as “the Oscars of books”, a dazzling fusion of creativity, purpose, and inspiration that positioned authors where they belong: center stage.

The gala honored literary voices from around the world whose works inspire, challenge, and shape global culture. From heartfelt memoirs and business strategy guides to powerful fiction and spiritual storytelling, every author celebrated that night represents the courage to share one’s truth with the world.

The visionary behind this momentous occasion is Nim Stant, the Founder and driving force of the International Impact Book Awards. Her mission has always been clear: to elevate authors to the same level of recognition and respect as any celebrated artist.

“As the Founder of the International Impact Book Awards, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude at the Author of the Year Gala in Hollywood,” said Stant. “This evening was more than a gala; it was a gathering of visionaries, leaders, and dreamers. It proved that with courage and persistence, we can create spaces that not only honor books, but elevate authors into history.”

Stant added, “When I created the International Impact Book Awards, my mission was to give authors the recognition they deserve. Seeing them celebrated like the stars reaffirmed my belief that stories shape culture and that our platform is where those voices rise.”

And as she reflected on the culmination of years of effort, Stant expressed: “Standing on the red carpet at our Author of the Year Gala in Hollywood was surreal. I poured years of vision, sacrifice, and determination into building this stage for authors and to see it come alive in such a powerful way reminded me that dreams, when pursued relentlessly, can become legacies.”

The evening featured keynote speakers Mike Torchia and Kimberlin Brown, who captivated the audience with inspiring messages about resilience, purpose, and creativity. The event was covered by Beverly Hills Journal, Beverly Hills Living, and SISI Hollywood, further solidifying the gala’s arrival as a prestigious addition to Hollywood’s cultural calendar.

Among the night’s most celebrated honorees was Sean Kanan, acclaimed actor, producer, and author, who received the Most Influential Author Award. Kanan, known for his roles in Cobra Kai and The Bold and the Beautiful, was the celebrity of the evening embodying the bridge between literature, film, and entertainment. Each of these authors embodies the spirit of the Awards, transforming pain into purpose, ideas into movements, and stories into legacies.

A Night That Redefined Literary Prestige

The Author of the Year Gala was more than a ceremony; it was a cultural milestone. The red carpet shimmered with elegance and anticipation as authors, producers, and thought leaders gathered to celebrate the written word. Flashbulbs illuminated faces filled with gratitude and pride, each author standing as proof that literature remains one of humanity’s most powerful tools for connection and change.

Behind every award presented stood years of dedication, struggle, and belief in the transformative power of ideas. From emerging writers to seasoned voices, every honoree embodied the mission of the International Impact Book Awards: to amplify stories that heal, educate, and empower.

This first-ever Hollywood edition didn’t just raise the bar, it redefined it. It bridged the world of publishing with the cinematic energy of Hollywood, reminding everyone that books are often the birthplace of films, movements, and revolutions of thought.

As the lights dimmed and applause echoed through the room, one message resonated clearly: authors are not merely storytellers, they are architects of legacy.

The International Impact Book Awards are now poised to expand globally, with new initiatives and partnerships that continue to give writers the recognition they deserve, one story at a time.

Brazil Submits ‘The Secret Agent’ For Best International Feature Oscar

Brazil Submits ‘The Secret Agent’ For Best International Feature Oscar

by jummy84 September 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent has been submitted as Brazil‘s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th annual Academy Awards.

The film was picked this afternoon by the Brazilian Cinema Academy.

The Secret Agent is led by Wagner Moura and also stars Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leon, Carlos Francisco, Alice Carvalho, and Hermila Guedes. The film was produced by Emilie Lesclaux. Co-producers include Nathanaël Karmitz, Elisha Karmitz, Fionnuala Jamison, Olivier Barbier, Leontine Petit, Erik Glijnis, Fred Burke, and Sol Bondy.

The film’s synopsis reads: Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. He arrives in Recife during carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son, but soon realizes that the city is far from being the non-violent refuge he seeks.

The Secret Agent debuted at this year’s Cannes Film Festival where it won Best Actor for Moura and Best Director for Filho, who is best known for his last fiction feature, Bacurau. That film debuted in Competition at Cannes in 2018 and won the Jury Prize. His last feature was Retratos Fantasmas, a documentary that debuted at Cannes in 2023.

Neon will release the film in the United States. Mubi has the rights in the UK, Ireland, India, and Latin America, excluding Brazil.

Brazil picked up the Best International Feature Film Oscar last year with Walter Salles’s I’m Still Here. The decision on who would represent Brazil at the 98th Academy Awards has been a hot-button topic in the country. Filho’s The Secret Agent has been the obvious frontrunner with its two Cannes wins. However, Mascaro’s The Blue Trail has been a local box office hit. And Marianna Brennand’s debut feature Manas was given a recent boost when Sean Penn joined the production as an EP alongside Salles and two-time Palme d’Or winners Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, and I’m Still Here producer Maria Carlota Bruno.

In a Sunday Instagram post, I’m Still Here star Fernanda Torres praised the strong set of submissions, enthusing: “Brazilian cinema is reborn like a phoenix”. Name-checking The Blue Trail and Manas, Torres said her personal preference was for The Secret Agent.

AMPAS will announce the shortlist for the category on December 16, with nominations to be announced January 22, 2026. The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15, 2026.

International Trailer for Kristen Stewart’s ‘The Chronology of Water’

“Disappear into your imagination! Nobody’s in the room but you and that pen!” Les Films du Losange in France has revealed the first official trailer for Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut – a new film titled The Chronology of Water, based on the book of the same name. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and will next stop by the Vienna & London Film Festivals. No US release date is set yet – it’s expected sometime in early 2026. An Olympic swimming hopeful flees her abusive home via a Texas scholarship. After losing her scholarship to addiction, she studies further under Ken Kesey in Oregon. Through writing, family, and self-discovery, she overcomes her troubled past. Stewart isn’t in the film – she co-wrote and produced and directed it. Imogen Poots stars as a young woman who finds her voice through the written word & her salvation as a swimmer – ultimately becoming a triumphant teacher, mother and a singular modern writer. The full cast includes Thora Birch, Earl Cave, Tom Sturridge, Kim Gordon, & Jim Belushi as iconic novelist Ken Kesey, who mentors Lidia. I did not care for this film – it’s a big mess.

Here’s the first French trailer for Kristen Stewart’s film The Chronology of Water, from YouTube:

The Chronology of Water Poster

Brought up in an environment torn apart by violence and alcohol, Lidia Yuknavitch seemed destined for self-destruction & failure until words offered her unexpected freedom through literature. The Chronology of Water, adapted from Yuknavitch’s autobiographical bestseller, follows Lidia’s journey to find her own voice in an exploration of how trauma can be transformed into art through re-possessing our own bloody histories, particularly those uniquely experienced by bodies of women and girls. The Chronology of Water is directed by acclaimed Americana actress / producer / filmmaker Kristen Stewart, making her feature directorial debut after a few other short films. The screenplay is written by Andy Mingo and Kirsten Stewart, adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir of the same name. It’s produced by Ridley Scott, Charles Gillibert, Yulia Zayceva, Max Pavlov, Svetlana Punte, Michael Pruss, Rebecca Feuer, Kristen Stewart, Maggie McLean, Dylan Meyer. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The film opens first in France on October 15th, 2025 this fall, then in select US theaters starting January 2026.
