Want to personalise your rental place? 6 easy decor tips to make it feel like home

Does your rental home feel bland? While lease restrictions may make certain alterations off-limits, that doesn’t mean your interiors have to feel dull. A bare home, lacking warmth, can feel oddly empty and unwelcoming, even affecting your mood. With the right touches, your decor will even make your landlord stop and stare, in a good way, maybe even pick your brain about the creative process.

The solution lies in finding creative but reversible ways to personalise your space without inflicting any damage. HT Lifestyle reached out to experts to understand how one can decorate their rented homes safely without permanently affecting the structure.

Ritika Rakhian, founder and principal architect at Urban Mistrii, recommended eight hacks that cover all the essentials, from wall treatments to creating signature corners:

1. Start with movable furniture and decor

  • Furniture is your best ally in adding personality without permanent changes.
  • Invest in versatile pieces that work across different spaces, like modular sofas, nesting tables, and multipurpose storage units.
  • Layer in area rugs to define spaces, add warmth, and hide less-than-ideal flooring.

2. Use temporary wall treatments

  • If painting isn’t allowed, peel-and-stick wallpapers and decals can transform a blank wall instantly and be removed without damage.
  • For renters wary of even that, large-scale art, framed prints, or fabric wall hangings can add colour and texture without touching the paint.

3. Lighting

  • Swap out harsh ceiling fixtures for stylish pendant lights or floor lamps (keeping the original fittings safe to reinstall before moving out).
  • Warm-toned LED bulbs can make your home feel cosier and more inviting.

4. Layer textiles for comfort

  • Soft furnishings like cushions, throws, and curtains are easy to update and move with you.
  • They add colour, texture, and personality, plus, they help soften echoey spaces common in rentals.
  • Opt for curtains that complement your furniture and can be adapted to different window sizes.

5. Bring in greenery

  • Indoor plants instantly make a space feel more lived-in and vibrant.
  • From low-maintenance succulents to statement fiddle leaf figs, greenery adds life and improves air quality without any permanent alterations.

6. Create a signature corner

  • Dedicate one area, whether it’s a reading nook, a home office desk, or a coffee corner, to reflect your personality.

While it is good to decorate your rented space, it’s important to also not go overboard and overstep the rules. Ritika cautioned, “Always review your lease before making changes, and choose updates you can easily reverse when moving out. This ensures you leave the property in its original state and keep your security deposit intact.”

Another expert weighed in on this from a layout perspective. Parul Agarwal, co-founder and director at Renascent Consultants, shared his insights on the spatial aspect of the layout, that is, how you arrange furniture and decor pieces to make your spaces more lively. He said, “Observe how you naturally move through the rooms, how the light enters at different times of the day, and which corners feel most inviting. Simple adjustments, like orienting your furniture to take advantage of natural light or clearing pathways to make movement more intuitive, can transform the experience of living in the space.”

Talking about how one can apply visual interest, he elaborated, “Introduce visual boundaries with rugs, open shelving, or even a folding screen can help carve out dedicated areas for work, dining, or relaxation.”

For a beautiful rental home, these clever hacks make your home feel warm and truly yours without breaching any rules.

Jonas Brothers Dash Home in 1st ‘A Very Jonas Christmas Movie’ Trailer

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

The Jonas Brothers promise they’ll be home for Christmas in the first look at the sibling trio’s upcoming family-friendly holiday movie. But based on the brief trailer that dropped on Friday (Sept. 5), Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas will have to overcome some seriously silly obstacles if they’re going to be letting it bro, bro, bro this December.

According to a synopsis of A Very Jonas Christmas Movie — which is slated to premiere globally on Disney+ on Nov. 14 — the trio will “face a series of escalating obstacles as they struggle to make it from London to New York in time to spend Christmas with their families.”

In the trailer, the brothers take a bow in snowy London after a standing-room-only gig, with Kevin lamenting that he hasn’t seen his kids “in like a month.” Meanwhile, Nick FaceTimes with wife Priyanka Chopra and promises he’ll be home for the holidays as she shares a “we love you” from the fam back home. But when Randall Park (Shortcomings) asks them if they’re sure they can make it to the airport without him the next day, Nick assures their minder that it’s just one night. “We’ll be fine,” he says. Famous last words.

Cue the mayhem, as the boys dash through the snow in a stranger’s car, run around London and freak out as a pack of wolves surround them in the woods. “I’m sorry we never got to hear you sing Kevin!” Joe shouts as the snarling lobos close in. “I’m sure your voice is pretty okay!”

The film’s all-star cast also includes: Billie Lourd (The Last Showgirl), Laverne Cox (Doubt), KJ Apa (I Still Believe), Chloe Bennett (Valley Girl), Andrew Barth Feldman (Maybe Happy Ending), Andrea Martin (Only Murders in the Building), Kenny G and producer/songwriter Justin Tranter as themselves, as well as Park and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Cocaine Bear).

The JoBros — who are also listed as producers — star as themselves in the film directed by Emmy- and Oscar-winner Jessica Yu (Quiz Lady), with some promised cameos from the extended Jonas family universe.

The brothers are still on the road for their 20th anniversary Jonas20: Greetings From Your Hometown tour, which is slated to hit the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif. on Saturday night (Sept. 6).

Check out the trailer below.

Toronto Film ‘Dry Leaf’ Finds North American Home with Cinema Guild

Cinema Guild has bought North American distribution rights to “Dry Leaf,” Georgian filmmaker Alexandre Koberidze’s follow up to “What Do We See When We Look at the Sky?” which competed at the Berlinale in 2021.

“Dry Leaf,” meanwhile, had its world premiere at the 78th Locarno Film Festival in August, where it
competed for the Golden Leopard.

The film will have its North American Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and will go on to play at the New York Film Festival. Cinema Guild will open the film theatrically in 2026,
followed by a national theatrical rollout.

Set against the quiet landscapes of rural Georgia, “Dry Leaf” follows Irakli (David Koberidze), a
father searching for his missing daughter, Lisa, a young sports photographer who vanished while documenting football fields in remote villages. Joined by Lisa’s enigmatic friend Levani
Otar Nijaradze), he embarks on a journey across the countryside, encountering strangers,
children, and fragments of Lisa’s presence. Their fruitless search gradually becomes a
meditative odyssey until a mysterious event offers one final clue, drawing Irakli and Levani into
the unknown and rekindling a faint glimmer of hope.

“Alexandre Koberidze is a filmmaker of rare vision and with a distinct voice that we are honored
to help bring to audiences”, said Peter Kelly, Cinema Guild President, who negotiated the deal with Ioanna Stais of Heretic, which handles international sales on the film.

Stais said The Cinema Guild is a “partner we deeply trust to bring Alexandre Koberidze’s singular vision to audiences with the care and commitment it deserves.” The sales executive said the film is “bound to connect with viewers in a memorable way” with its “distinctive style and deeply human storytelling.”

“Dry Leaf” was produced by Mariam Shatberashvili and Luise Hauschild at New Matter Films,
alongside Koberidze whose previous feature “What Do We See When We Look at the Sky?” won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlinale. His feature debut, “Let the Summer Never Come Again” won the Grand Prix at FID Marseille.

Cardiovascular surgeon debunks 2 heart attack home treatment myths: Try this immediately instead of CPR, cayenne pepper

Cardiovascular surgeon debunks 2 heart attack home treatment myths: Try this immediately instead of CPR, cayenne pepper

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Published on: Sept 05, 2025 10:51 am IST

Cayenne pepper is not a proven treatment for heart attacks, as per Dr Jeremy London – aspirin, on the other hand, has been shown to help, the surgeon said.

Cardiovascular surgeon, Dr Jeremy London, took to Instagram on September 3 to address common misconceptions regarding immediate home treatments for heart attacks. The cardiologist debunked the efficacy of ‘coughing CPR’, explaining that while coughing can alter heart rhythms in a monitored setting, it does not restore blood flow to a deprived heart muscle during an acute heart attack at home. Also read | Cardiologist shares real reasons even fit and sporty people suffer heart attacks, sudden cardiac arrest during workout

Causes of heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest can be unpredictable, making it crucial to maintain regular health check-ups and be aware of family history.(Freepik)

Can CPR change the course of heart attack at home?

Dr London said in the video he posted, “I want to address a couple of myths that are frequently professed on social media and occasionally even in the standard press. The first is something called coughing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), or coughing during a heart attack.”

He explained: “Coughing can change abnormal heart rhythms to normal rhythms. In a heart attack situation, you have to understand that the reason your heart is so irritable and has abnormal rhythms is a lack of blood flow to that area below the blockage. Although we use coughing in the hospital setting when the patient is fully monitored, to do that at home, it’s not going to impact the blood flow to that blood-starved heart muscle, and it’s very unlikely that it’s going to change the course of your heart attack at home.”

Can cayenne pepper or jalapenos stop heart attack?

Furthermore, Dr London dismissed the use of cayenne pepper (commonly referred to as lal mirch or red chilli) or jalapenos as a home remedy, asserting they have no impact on stopping a heart attack. Instead, he emphasised the importance of taking aspirin – which is known to affect platelets and clotting – as a more effective immediate intervention.

Dr London shared, “The second (myth) is utilising cayenne pepper or jalapenos as an at-home treatment in an acute setting like a heart attack. They have absolutely no role and do not impact stopping an acute heart attack. So in this instance, reach for the aspirin that we know affects platelets, which affects clotting, that will prevent the heart attack from extending, as opposed to coughing and cayenne pepper.”

Mala Sekhri on creating a home for music, restoring its etiquette at India Music Retreat in Jaipur

Mala Sekhri on creating a home for music, restoring its etiquette at India Music Retreat in Jaipur

by jummy84 September 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Like everything else, the sanctity of music, too, is diluted. Artists think nothing of singing Raag Bhairav, a morning raga, at night or Megh Malhar during the full moon—a painful reality but one that has become a norm. For the uninitiated, Megh Malhar is a monsoon raga, so to speak.

India Music Retreat in Jaipur will see performances from various artistes across the country.

Raga shuffling apart, even music etiquette has been thrown to the winds. Aficionados rue the sparse attention span of those who listen less and understand little but must be seen at all events, which could help get them a Page 3 slot. These are the same people who think nothing of walking in and out in the middle of a concert and sometimes applaud even at the wrong time.

Correcting music etiquette

Among the many who decided to correct this is Mala Sekhri, Founder of MuseMusic: “In the current fast-forward culture, music is experienced in fragments: shortened slots in crowded auditoriums, distracted audiences, and commercial packaging. This has taken away from what music was meant to be for true listeners.”

The next thing Sekhri did was to restore what she terms as “subtlety of the baithak” and create the right “mahaul and an atmosphere of discovery and reverence”, under the auspices of The India Music Retreat.

Sekhri says it was more conviction than being commercially driven: “It is to restore the dignity of the performers and performance and through this build a sustainable meeting ground annually: in other words, create a home for music,” says Sekhri.

Upcoming retreat in Jaipur

Come September, and the city of Jaipur will perhaps have a soul-change, so to speak: “The decision to host the retreat in Jaipur was deliberate. Accessibility apart, it has spaces crafted for an ethereal listening experience and one that transports you away from this world, which is rushed and hustling. Music here resonates naturally,” Sekhri says.

This year’s festival, scheduled for mid-September, has an impressive line-up: Ustad Shujaat Khan, Wassifuddin Dagar, Jasbir Jassi and American Saxophonist George Brooks: an amalgam of dhrupad, thumri, ghazal, folk and much more.

Some of the other high points of the much-awaited festival are artistes reliving their music memories, Brunch with pianist Brian Silas, and tributes to accompanists, including table and tanpura players, among others.

Sekhri comes with a rich experience of hosting similar events in the past: “ a never-done-before experience”, as Sekhri says. Dariya Kinare, on the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, was memorable as was the one in Varanasi or Sur Mahal in Patiala in Punjab, among others. Given their success and the mesmerising experience, the forthcoming one in Jaipur is sure to make the cut: “Fingers crossed”, says Sekhri as she embarks on yet another edition of the journey of music and restoring its etiquette and “mahaul”, so to speak

Inside Dhanashree Verma’s home

Shared on YouTube on September 1, the video gives a glimpse inside Dhanashree’s home, where she is living alone for the first time, as she previously lived with her parents and then with her ex-husband, Yuzvendra Chahal. In the video, the choreographer revealed that she enjoys her space and prefers it.

Admiring Dhanashree’s taste in decor, Farah described her home as a lovely space with a ‘very positive vibe’. During the home tour, she shared a glimpse of her living area with an open kitchen concept and a cosy space dedicated to a home bar, the guest bedroom, and her personal music studio.

Stunning interiors and a gorgeous balcony

As for decorations, she revealed that a lot of the paintings on the walls are made by her grandmother, who has Parkinson’s disease, which contributed to their unique texture. Apart from the paintings, modern light fixtures and chandeliers, tropical and modern classic wallpapers, light wood furniture, ambient lighting, pastel closets in the kitchen, large windows allowing natural light, indoor plants, and a spacious balcony giving a stunning view of the Mumbai skyline, brighten up the space.

About Dhanashree Verma’s divorce

Dhanashree Verma and Yuzvendra Chahal tied the knot in an intimate wedding ceremony in 2020 in Gurgaon. However, the couple reportedly separated in 2022. In March 2025, they finalised their divorce.

Since then, Yuzvendra has been linked to RJ Mahvash due to their frequent public appearances together and posts for each other on social media. However, both have repeatedly called each other just friends.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Dhanashree will next be seen in Ashneer Grover’s upcoming reality show Rise And Fall.

Which wood is best for furniture? A guide to natural and engineered choices for your home
Lifestyle

Which wood is best for furniture? A guide to natural and engineered choices for your home

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

I’ve always believed that choosing the right material for furniture is like choosing the right fabric for a favourite outfit. It shapes the look, the comfort, and how long it will stay with you. Wood in particular is fascinating because it carries history, character, and a texture that can change the feel of an entire room. Over the years, I’ve been asked one question again and again. Which wood is best for furniture?

A mix of solid and engineered wood furniture adds balance, blending timeless beauty with everyday function for stylish, practical living spaces.

The truth is, there isn’t one answer. The answer shifts based on your project, your budget, and the level of attention you’re prepared to give the furniture later. Some woods are timeless classics, while others are modern, engineered options that make life easier. Let’s take a look at three natural and three man-made choices, with a few suggestions for where they shine.

Teak Wood

For centuries, Indian homes have relied on teak as their strongest furniture material. Strong, termite-resistant, and naturally oiled, it’s the kind of wood that grows better with age. Its golden-brown glow and fine grain give it a refined finish even without polish. Teak is on the expensive side, but it’s an investment that lasts for decades.

Works best for

  • Dining tables that can handle generations of use
  • Solid bed frames for long-term comfort
  • Outdoor furniture, since it can take on the elements

Sheesham Wood

Sheesham, often called Indian rosewood, is known for its bold grains and rich tones. Every piece feels different, which makes it perfect when you want furniture that looks unique. It’s strong and responds beautifully to carving, so it often becomes the go-to for statement furniture.

Works best for

  • Coffee tables that bring warmth to living rooms
  • Bookshelves and cabinets that also serve as decor
  • Bedside tables with subtle detailing

Mango Wood

Mango wood is gaining popularity for good reason. Once a mango tree stops producing fruit, the wood is reused instead of being wasted, making it a sustainable choice. It’s lighter and softer than teak or Sheesham, but still sturdy enough for most furniture. The fun part is how long it takes to finish and the colours, so you can experiment freely.

Works best for

  • TV units and sideboards with character
  • Accent chairs in bold painted finishes
  • Console tables that add charm to hallways

Plywood

Plywood offers strength and versatility that usually surprises those who work with it. Made by layering sheets of veneer, it resists warping and works well with laminates or veneers on top. It’s the sensible choice when you need a balance of durability and budget.

Works best for

  • Modular kitchens designed for daily use
  • Wardrobes and cupboards with sleek finishes
  • Office desks and furniture that need stability

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)

MDF is smooth and even, which makes it ideal for painted finishes. While it lacks natural wood grain, it creates a flawless surface for colour or design. It’s also affordable and easy to work with, though it’s best avoided in areas that get damp.

Works best for

  • Study tables with bright finishes
  • Children’s room furniture in playful shades
  • Decorative wall panels and partitions

Particle Board

Particle board is the budget-friendly option. It’s made from wood chips and resin, which makes it light and easy to shape. While it’s not as strong as plywood or MDF, it’s useful for furniture that isn’t expected to hold a lot of weight.

Works best for

  • Shelves for light storage
  • TV stands for smaller gadgets
  • Office workstations in budget setups

So, which wood is best for furniture? There isn’t one clear winner. Teak, Sheesham, and mango wood bring natural beauty and strength, while plywood, MDF, and particle board offer practicality and affordability. My suggestion is to mix them. When it comes to statement furniture, solid wood takes the stage, while engineered wood keeps things simple and functional. That way, your home feels stylish, comfortable, and sensible all at once.
