‘Soulless BS’: Netizens slam AI music video of Jagjit Singh’s hit song Koi Fariyaad

by jummy84 October 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Jagjit Singh is celebrated as one of the most iconic voices in Indian music history. Among his many unforgettable songs, Koi Fariyaad from Tum Bin (2001) stands out, a track that captured the very soul of the film. The song’s emotional depth wasn’t easy to achieve, as director Anubhav Sinha once revealed, according to Filmfare: “Ghazal was to play a very integral part in telling the story. Faaiz Anwar was essentially a shayar and not a lyricist, but when I told him to write a ghazal for Tum Bin, the whole idea was I’d approve one sher (couplet) and then he would write the song around that.

AI music video for Koi Fariyaad

He would tell me a sher every now and then, and I kept refusing. Finally, I was at some shoot and he called me, and recited the lines ‘Ek lamhe mein simat aaya hai sadiyon ka safar. Zindagi tez bahut tez chali ho jaise.’ I jumped at it and said this is it! He started laughing and asked me if I was aware that it was the 82nd sher, which means I had already rejected 81 shers.”

AI-generated rendition of Koi Fariyaad

However, the latest rendition of the song, released by T-Series two days ago, has stirred some controversy. The music label launched an AI-generated rendition of Koi Fariyaad, keeping Jagjit Singh’s timeless voice and original lyrics intact, but presenting a stop-motion visual treatment where the people on screen appear eerily not-human. The new direction, by Shreya Mehrotra and Gourov Dasgupta, was produced by Cyberpunk Studio.

Netizens were quick to share their disappointment. On Reddit, one user said, “Man the song itself has so much emotion and then when u go watch the video u see this soulless bs 🥲🙏.” Others chimed in with comments like, “what a joke,” “T series Short Of Money. Old Songs And AI Videos,” and “sad song ko comedy song bana diya hai.” Several fans felt that AI could never capture the emotional nuance of the original actors, with one writing, “AI can’t ever replace Priyanshu and Sandali Sinha… AI can’t explain eye expressions ever.” Another tried to see the silver lining: “They are doing an experiment i guess.”

The AI-fication of music videos

This is not T-Series’ first foray into AI music videos. In August 2025, the label collaborated with Google’s Veo 3 model and Cyberpunk Studio to produce an AI-generated video bringing the late singer KK back to life.

But with Koi Fariyaad, it seems that the emotional essence of the song is difficult to translate through AI, sparking an ongoing debate amongst netizens. What do you think about this?

Netflix Hit Back, but Not Better

by jummy84 October 23, 2025
written by jummy84

When Erin Foster’s Netflix rom-com Nobody Wants This premiered last year, I discussed it through one of my favorite prisms: Is it good for the Jews?

My answer was a mixed “Yes.” The first season, in which a rabbi (Adam Brody‘s Noah) falls for a shiksa podcaster (Kristen Bell‘s Joanne) — “shiksa” being the show’s oft-repeated preferred slur, not mine — aimed for laughter and swooning, but simultaneously took a serious-minded approach to interfaith relationships and a specific and detailed approach to Judaism. I appreciated that effort, especially in a television landscape in which any expression of religion, much less Jewishness, is decidedly rare.

Nobody Wants This

The Bottom Line

Not a shanda, but not quite a mitzvah either.

Airdate: Thursday, October 23 (Netflix)
Cast: Kristen Bell, Adam Brody, Justine Lupe, Timothy Simons, Jackie Tohn
Creator: Erin Foster

I still expressed serious concerns about the show’s lack of generosity toward its Jewish female characters — particularly Tovah Feldshuh’s Bina and Jackie Tohn’s Esther — and I was perplexed by why both Joanne and her sister/podcast partner Morgan’s (Justine Lupe) lack of knowledge or curiosity about Jewishness so frequently resembled playful antisemitism.

Was the show itself also, you know, good? Well, my answer was similarly a mixed “Yes.” The appeal of Nobody Wants This hinged primarily on the chemistry between Bell and Brody, which isn’t uncommon for a rom-com. That the chemistry was palpable helped Nobody Wants This overcome its predictable reliance on genre clichés, while the supporting cast, especially Timothy Simons, Lupe and Tohn, helped elevate underwritten roles (though with Lupe’s performance, I was stuck pondering uncomfortable questions like, “If an actor is so charming that she makes you ignore that her character borders on antisemitic … is that GOOD?”)

Anyway, the show was a sensation, earning Golden Globe and Emmy nominations and reminding Hollywood pencil-pushers that the appetite for a proficiently made rom-com very much exists.

The second season of Nobody Wants This, then, is a reminder of why television prefers, whenever possible, to give its rom-coms a procedural coating. Moonlighting? A mystery-of-the-week procedural (but really, at its best, a rom-com). Castle? A mystery-of-the-week procedural (but really, at its best, a rom-com). Bones? A mystery-of-the-week procedural (but really, at its best, a rom-com). It just helps for your characters to have other things to do in addition to falling in and out of love. Otherwise, a distinct risk of repetition and exhaustion sets in.

Nobody Wants This doesn’t fall off a creative cliff in its second season, but a lot of the charm is diminished. The new creative team takes evident pains to adjust some of the character-based problems from the first season, but in the process of expanding the profile for several supporting players, Brody and Bell are left playing often identical beats of uncertainty and insecurity to the ones that worked well in the first season. In the process, the chemistry and overall appeal dwindle dramatically.

The new season, boasting Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan as new showrunners, picks up fairly soon after the first — though time generally doesn’t matter much in the world of Nobody Wants This, except for when people want to complain about things being “too soon” or “too slow.”

Noah and Joanne are basically living together, except for when the show wants to remind us of Joanne’s insecurity that they’re not formally living together. The whole “Joanne isn’t sure she’s ready to convert to Judaism” thing remains their primary bone of contention, though the writers give Noah a contrived professional crisis so that they have things to talk about other than why Joanne can’t commit to converting or not converting.

Adding to the rom-com hijinks are extended storylines with Simons’ Sasha, whose professional life has vanished entirely along with father Ilan (Paul Ben-Victor, almost totally absent); Esther hitting bumpy patches; and Morgan embarking on a romance with Dr. Andy (Arian Moayed), an accelerated love story that Joanne disapproves of but the show seems to find amusing rather than ultra-disturbing given its origins. We spend more time with Joanne and Morgan’s parents (Stephanie Faracy’s Lynn and Michael Hitchcock’s Henry).

The season premiere, written by Foster and featuring the return of Noah’s rec league basketball team, again positions Feldshuh’s Bina, frequently my biggest source of discomfort in the first season, as an ongoing adversary. Then she nearly vanishes in the second half of the season, which is one way of dodging the Jewish mom stereotyping.

Another way is to write characters out of a maternal role, like Esther, whose teenage daughter has become invisible (figuratively), allowing Esther to concentrate on more important things like getting bangs and waffling on whether or not she’s jealous of Sasha and Morgan’s friendship. Esther’s still a little mean this season, but she’s playfully mean and makes no effort to break Joanne and Noah up, so we can like her without complication. As for Morgan — still my most consistent source of laughs — giving her a relationship of her own, however bad that relationship is, makes her less prone to saying dumb things about Jewishness.

Thus, Esther and Morgan become less problematic characters and Bina becomes a frequently mentioned but less frequently seen afterthought. That’s a way of fixing those problems!

But new problems arrive with Noah and Joanne. In the first season, Noah was perhaps over-idealized, to a point at which it was hard to feel like the generally superficial and dithering Joanne was on his level. This season turns Noah into a smarmier, borderline sociopathic character — far more like Joe from Netflix’s You than anybody is likely to want to admit — whose condescension often became insufferable for me. I’d say I sympathized more with Joanne, but it’s almost like the writers realized that despite her being based on the series creator, she had no specific personality traits, so scripts are constantly trying to over-explain her limited eccentricities.

An episode featuring Brody’s real-life wife Leighton Meester tries to fill in some backstory blanks, as does an episode that spells out how Joanne’s parents’ divorce impacted her. But people kept making pronouncements about Joanne’s personality and I kept responding with, “Huh?” Plus, somehow Joanne and Morgan’s podcast is less plausible and less purposeful than it was last season.

There are still times that Brody and Bell generate some sweetness, but the heat and crackle between them is missing — by choice a lot of the time, but far from all of it. The entire first season sold the premise, “These two characters absolutely belong together, no matter the obstacles.” This season builds to a nearly identical finale decision and I was hard-pressed to care.

The vagueness extends to the season’s perspective on Judaism, which is simultaneously more and less.

The season is very invested in exploring Jewishness as a way of processing the world, which of course it is, more than as a “religion,” which of course it is for many people. At the same time, Nobody’s Wants This becomes like the rom-com version of one of those high school-set shows in which the book they’re studying any particular week ties in directly to the theme of the episode. Noah is constantly making sermons or toasts cribbed from Talmud for Netflix Subscribers. Then again, there’s a full Purim episode, so I shouldn’t quibble.

My biggest regret of the entire season is the lack of a return cameo from Leslie Grossman’s Rabbi Shira, whose lone episode last season represented one of its most meaningful spiritual moments. Sending up the no-stakes frivolity of progressive Reform Judaism, characters played by Seth Rogen and Kate Berlant get some insight-free chuckles. Plus, bringing in Rogen forces comparisons to Platonic, which had a tighter, funnier second season and emerged as a better “Los Angeles” show.

Or maybe Nobody Wants This just requires a mulligan after the creative overhaul of the second season. Reading THR‘s cover story after watching the season and writing most of this review, I find it amazing that the first season worked as well as it did and wholly unsurprising that the second season doesn’t seem as secure in who these people are or what their story is. Maybe season three will be what I actually want.

Vijay and Suriya’s 2001 Hit Friends Returns to Theatres in 4K This November

by jummy84 October 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Tamil cinema’s re-release fever is showing no signs of slowing down. After the return of Kushi, another early-2000s favourite is heading back to theatres. Friends, the 2001 film starring Vijay, Suriya and Ramesh Khanna, will once again grace the big screen on November 21 in a 4K remastered version enhanced with Dolby Atmos sound. The rerelease was officially announced by public relations officer Nikil Murukan earlier this week, sparking excitement among fans who grew up watching the feel-good entertainer.

A timeless friendship finds new life

Originally directed by Siddique, Friends is based on his 1999 Malayalam film of the same name. The Tamil adaptation follows three inseparable companions whose deep bond is tested when love, secrets and misunderstandings enter the picture. What begins as a carefree tale of friendship soon takes an emotional turn, exploring how trust and loyalty can be shaken but never fully lost.

The ensemble cast includes Vijayalakshmi, Vadivelu, Abhinayashree, Charle and Radha Ravi, each contributing to the film’s mix of humour and heart. When Friends first arrived in theatres as a Pongal release in 2001, it went up against Ajith Kumar’s Dheena and still managed to emerge as one of the year’s biggest hits. Audiences loved its light-hearted tone, Ilaiyaraaja’s melodious soundtrack and the rare pairing of Vijay and Suriya, two stars who would go on to dominate Tamil cinema in their own right.

A nostalgic celebration for a new generation

The re-release of Friends comes at a time when audiences are rediscovering the joy of watching classics on the big screen. Recent Tamil rereleases have performed remarkably well, proving that emotional storytelling never goes out of style. With Friends, the restoration aims to preserve the charm of the original while presenting it with the clarity and sound quality of modern cinema.

The film’s famous tagline for the re-release, “Some friendships never fade, they just return stronger,” captures the spirit of its comeback. For longtime fans, this screening is a chance to relive their memories in the theatre once again. For newer viewers, it is an opportunity to see Vijay and Suriya share screen space in a film that shaped the tone of early 2000s Tamil comedy dramas.

The original Friends stood out for balancing laughter with emotional depth. Siddique’s direction gave the story warmth and rhythm, while the chemistry between the leads carried the film’s heart. Two decades later, the rerelease not only celebrates that enduring friendship but also highlights how the themes of loyalty and forgiveness still resonate with today’s audience.

With Friends returning to cinemas worldwide on November 21, the season of nostalgia continues. The laughter, the music and the emotion are all set to come alive again, this time brighter and louder than ever.

Hit Brit Comedy Set for Return

by jummy84 October 12, 2025
written by jummy84

“The Inbetweeners,” the hit British teen comedy series that gave the world a foul-mouthed library of hilariously puerile quotes not to mention two hugely successful spin-off movies, looks set to make a comeback.

Banijay UK and Fudge Park Productions, the company founded in 2015 by show creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, have struck an agreement which they say “paves the way for the return of the hit comedy title.” In what guise “The Inbetweeners” will return and on what platform is as yet unknown, although Morris and Beesley suggested it would revolve around the original characters.

“Incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends),” they said in a statement.

Originally broadcast on E4 in the U.K. between 2008 and 2019, “The Inbetweeners” follows the misadventures of suburban teenager Will MacKenzie and his friends Simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland and Jay Cartwright at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive as they navigated school life, friendship, male bonding, lad culture and failed sexual encounters. It was originally conceived as a more realistic counterpoint to fellow hit Brit teen show “Skins,” showcasing an adolescence that is awkward and — as Morris suggested at the time — mostly “crap.”

Over three series “The Inbetweeners” set new ratings records for the channel and won multiple awards. Two hit movies followed, released in 2011 and 2014 respectively. The first set a record for the biggest opening weekend for a U.K. comedy at the time of its release with the sequel also breaking box office records.

Made by Bwark Productions, the original company founded by Morris and Beesley, which later sold to Zodiak Media (acquired by Banijay in 2016), the new deal unlocks what is described as “the rights and the potential to bring ‘The Inbetweeners’ back for new audiences across a range of platforms including film, tv and stage.”

“We are thrilled to announce this exciting partnership with Banijay who share our vision and ambition for one of the most iconic comedies in British history,” said Jonathan Blyth, managing director of Fudge Park. “This is a wonderful moment for fans, there are exciting conversations afoot and more news to follow.”

Patrick Holland, CEO Banijay UK added: “I have worked with Damon and Iain on a number of Fudge Park projects over the years and was delighted to pick up the conversation about the future of ‘The Inbetweeners’ with them. They have an infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audience old and new so I can’t wait to get going.”

Banijay Rights are distributors of “The Inbetweeners.”

Since ending the series, Morris and Beesley have worked on numerous projects, both together and apart, and teamed on “The Festival” comedy film and later the BBC series ‘The First Team.” Beesley also created the series “White Gold,” starring many of “The Inbetweeners” cast, while Morris co-wrote sports comedy “Next Goal Wins” alongside Taika Waititi, was among the creators of Apple series “Time Bandits” and recently directed Netflix feature “My Oxford Year.”

Shah Rukh Khan is back to hosting duties at this year’s Filmfare Awards, but if leaked videos from the rehearsals are anything to go by, the star will be doing much more than just dance this weekend. A video shared by a Shah Rukh fan club shows the 59-year-old star turning back the clock and dancing to Ladki Badi Anjaani Hai from his 1998 film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Shah Rukh Khan will perform at this year’s Filmfare Awards.

Shah Rukh Khan rehearses for Filmfare Awards 2025

SRK Fans United shared a video of Shah Rukh with dancers on the Filmfare Awards stage, apparently dancing during rehearsals. The actor, dressed in a casual grey sweatshirt with cargo pants, dances to Ladki Badi Anjaani Hai, recreating the song’s famous steps. The backup dancers dance alongside him.

The second part of the video shows a huge crowd gathered outside the venue, even though it is dark. The caption claims that fans crowded outside the stadium at 3 am where Filmfare Awards 2025 will be held, just to catch a glimpse of Shah Rukh Khan. “King Khan rehearsing for Filmfare award with crowd gathering outside the stadium at 3 am,” read the caption.

About the 2025 Filmfare Awards

The 70th Filmfare Awards will be held on October 11 in Ahmedabad. Shah Rukh is the host for the evening alongside Maniesh Paul and Karan Johar.

When he was announced as the host last week, the actor had said in a statement, “From the first time I held the Black Lady in my hands, to sharing countless memories with my colleagues and fans over the years; it’s been a journey of love, cinema, and magic. To return as a co-host for the 70th year is truly special, and I promise we’ll make it a night to remember, full of laughter, nostalgia and celebration of the movies we all love.”

Shah Rukh Khan’s King

Shah Rukh will be next seen in Siddharth Anand’s King, which marks his first on-screen collaboration with daughter Suhana Khan. The film boasts a large ensemble cast, including Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Rani Mukerji, Arshad Warsi, Jackie Shroff, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Raghav Juyal. It is set to release in 2026.

The Whole Bloody Affair’ to Hit Theaters

by jummy84 October 2, 2025
written by jummy84

What is Quentin Tarantino‘s greatest movie? Before you answer, we’re going to wager you haven’t seen it — namely because it’s never been released. Not really. Back in July, IndieWire declared Tarantino’s best film to be “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair,” which combines both theatrically released parts of “Kill Bill” and was Tarantino’s original vision as one complete movie.

After a handful of screenings at Tarantino’s own Vista Theater, Lionsgate is now giving “The Whole Bloody Affair” a proper release in theaters for the first time since it played Cannes in 2006. “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” will open in theaters from Lionsgate on December 5, 2025.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 30: (L-R) Joachim Trier, Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård attend the "Sentimental Value" Red Carpet during the 63rd New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center on September 30, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by Theo Wargo/WireImage)

The 258-minute long epic will be screened in 70mm and 35mm in select markets, it has a 7½-minute anime sequence that was never in the originally released films, and it removes the cliffhanger ending from Vol. 1 and the recap that began Vol. 2. It’s one truly epic film that if it’s not the best film he’s ever made we wrote is “certainly the most movie” ever made.

“I wrote and directed it as one movie — and I’m so glad to give the fans the chance to see it as one movie,” Tarantino said in a statement. “The best way to see ‘Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair’ is at a movie theater in glorious 70mm or 35mm. Blood and guts on a big screen in all its glory!”

When seeing it all as one piece, we wrote that “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” plays like Sergio Leone classics like “Once Upon a Time in the West” or “Once Upon a Time in America” that combine elements of Hollywood genre movies but breathe new life into them.

“While the concept is straightforward, the execution is remarkably complex. Tarantino spends over four hours teasing out every narrative, stylistic, and philosophical possibility raised by the premise before he strips it all back down again at the end and reveals the movie was about something simple — a mother getting back to her daughter — after all,” IndieWire’s review of “The Whole Bloody Affair” reads.

If you haven’t seen “Kill Bill,” it tells the story of The Bride (Uma Thurman), an assassin left for dead at her wedding who seeks revenge on her former boss and lover and needs to hunt down the four remaining members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. The film stars Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Gordon Liu, Michael Parks, and David Carradine as “Bill.” The film is produced by Lawrence Bender, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, based on the character of “The Bride” created by Q&U.

The release of “The Whole Bloody Affair” comes as we await more news of whatever Tarantino’s 10th feature film — and presumably last — will be. We will be getting more of Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth in a “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” film that David Fincher is directing based on Tarantino’s script. That movie will be released by Netflix. And we’re also soon getting a book series that will explore the “making of” behind all of Tarantino’s movies. He also in a recent podcast interview explained why he moved on from what was meant to be his 10th film, “The Movie Critic.”

Lionsgate also manages the library distribution rights to many of Tarantino’s other films, so it’s possible we get other special re-releases in the future. Those include “Reservoir Dogs,” “Jackie Brown,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Django Unchained,” “The Hateful Eight,” and “Death Proof.”

“Toilet: Ek Prem Katha,” directed by Shree Narayan Singh and produced by Akshay Kumar and Neeraj Pandey, is set in rural India and sheds light on the country’s sanitation crisis, which is deeply rooted in cultural and religious sentiments. What makes this cinematic gem intriguing is how it came to be on the big screen. Despite its eventual success, “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” faced significant early challenges. The script floated around the industry for a whopping four years, receiving rejection from several Bollywood heavyweights. However, fate had different plans.

Enter Akshay Kumar, known for playing socially conscious characters. After hearing the script, the superstar embraced the project wholeheartedly and became its driving force. His dedication to the story, combined with the film’s powerful message, had audiences flocking to theaters and critics raving.
