Apollo Hospital cardiologist shares warning signs of sleep trouble that may harm heart health: ‘Loud snoring…’

Sleep is the cornerstone of good health, and cutting corners means compromising on your well-being extensively. While getting adequate sleep is an essential health habit, sometimes your rest still gets interrupted, irrespective of your efforts. These interruptions can hint at underlying conditions that require prompt medical attention.

To learn more about these red-flag sleep interruptions, HT Lifestyle reached out to Dr Rajesh Matta, consultant interventional cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai. He emphasised that if someone frequently experiences sleep disruptions, it should not be taken lightly. A proper evaluation should be scheduled, as he noted that sleep is closely tied to heart health, and any unresolved sleep problems may lead to serious cardiac issues in the long run.

Signs you need to pay attention to

Dr Matta revealed that sleep-related problems can show up in various ways: some occur during sleep, some appear immediately after waking up, and others affect your health more gradually over time.

As soon as you wake up, your own body gives clues that sleep wasn’t as restorative as it should have been. Dr Matta urged that everyone should pay attention to how they feel after waking up in the morning, as some signs of poor sleep may also indicate heart-related concerns.

“Pay attention to morning symptoms. If you’re waking up with headaches, feeling unrested despite adequate time in bed, or experiencing a racing heart or palpitations, these could be red flags,” The cardiologist explained. “Excessive daytime fatigue that interferes with daily activities isn’t normal; it often indicates poor sleep quality that’s stressing your cardiovascular system.”

While post-sleep signs are usually more subtle and sometimes may be confused with tiredness, there are some sleep problems which show up as major disturbances during the night. The cardiologist shared, “Loud snoring, gasping, or choking during sleep are warning signs of sleep apnea, which dramatically increases risk for hypertension, arrhythmias, and heart failure.”

The other warning signs include difficulty controlling blood pressure despite medication, unexplained weight gain, or increased anxiety and irritability, as per Dr Matta. These are more long-term in nature, in contrast to the immediate signs mentioned earlier. But they all affect metabolic and cardiovascular health, and the cardiologist warned against ignoring them.

How to improve sleep?

Dr Matta recommended these 4 habits, which help to improve your sleep quality. Try adding them to your daily routine:

1. Establish a fixed wake time: This is more important than a fixed bedtime because it anchors your circadian rhythm. Within a week or two, one will naturally start to feel sleepy at an appropriate time.

2. Sunlight exposure: Get morning sunlight exposure within 30 minutes of waking; it sets your internal clock and improves sleep quality that night.

3. Do physical activity: Incorporate 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days, but finish at least three hours before bedtime. Exercise is one of the most powerful sleep aids, and it directly benefits the heart.

4. Create wind-down routine: 15 minutes of light reading or gentle stretching.

Can Melatonin Cause Heart Failure? What We Know About the Supplement – Hollywood Life

New research has raised concerns about the long-term use of melatonin supplements, which are widely available for purchase in the United States. With countless Americans having taken the supplement at least once in their lives, many are wondering if they are at risk of heart failure. So, could taking melatonin actually lead to heart failure?

Below, we break down the new study about melatonin and the risk, according to the data released by the American Heart Association as part of its Scientific Sessions.

Is Melatonin a Hormone?

Yes, melatonin is a hormone produced in the human body that helps the sleep cycle.

What Do Melatonin Supplements do?

Melatonin supplements help a person’s sleep-and-wake cycle. Those living with insomnia, for example, can take melatonin on a short-term basis to help their sleep pattern.

Taking melatonin at any point in the day can cause drowsiness.

— American Heart Association (@American_Heart) October 29, 2025

Does Melatonin Cause Heart Failure?

Technically, yes, but it depends on how much melatonin you take. Researchers revealed in November 2025 that long-term supplement users were more than three times as likely to suffer from heart failure and twice as likely to die from any cause. Additionally, they found that more than 100,000 adults living with chronic insomnia and taking melatonin for more than one year had a 90 percent higher chance of experiencing heart failure over the next five years.

However, the American Heart Association’s news release pointed out that the discovery “cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship” even though it raised safety concerns about the long-term usage of the supplement.

The preliminary research will be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025 this month, the AHA revealed in a news release.

Is it Still Safe to Take Melatonin?

Yes, short-term usage of melatonin is still safe, but the new research still raises concerns for those who have taken melatonin over the counter for more than one year. Marie-Pierre St-Onge, Ph.D., C.C.S.H., FAHA, and chair of the writing group for the American Heart Association’s 2025 scientific statement, said she was “surprised that physicians would prescribe melatonin for insomnia and have patients use it for more than 365 days, since melatonin, at least in the U.S., is not indicated for the treatment of insomnia.”

“In the U.S., melatonin can be taken as an over-the-counter supplement, and people should be aware that it should not be taken chronically without a proper indication,” St-Onge said, per the AHA’s news release.

Pune cardiologist with 19 years of experience shares why the calf muscle is called ‘second heart’

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Your legs are more than just for walking. It also regulates vital functions related to cardiovascular health. It is also often called the ‘second heart.’ To understand why the calf muscle is called the second heart, HT Lifestyle reached out to Dr Priya Palimkar, senior consultant – cardiologist at Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune, who has over 19 years of experience.

She confirmed that yes, commonly the calf muscles, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, are usually called as ‘second heart.’ The cardiologist revealed that it supports circulation and prevents venous problems. “The name ‘second heart’ indicates the importance of leg muscles in the blood recirculation from the legs to the heart. This is because pumping blood back is the primary task of the heart, and these muscles assist in this process.”

So, in other words, it helps to keep blood moving smoothly. While the heart is responsible for pumping the blood throughout the body, the calf muscles help for the extra push the blood needs for returning from the legs, back to the heart.

How does the ‘second heart’ work?

Now, how does the calf muscle help in circulation? As per Dr Palimkar, it works as a natural pump. “When a person is standing or walking, the force of gravity causes the blood to flow downwards into the veins that are located in the legs. As a result, the calf muscles are activated and they contract to harden and compress the deep veins which are close to them. Blood is prevented from being pulled back by the one-way valves in the veins; thus every contraction, it moves blood upward to the heart,” the cardiologist elaborated.

In fact, the calf muscles are called the second heart because they take on a supporting role for the heart. They ensure that blood does not pool in the legs and that the circulation is effective. It helps to make the heart’s job easier.

“The heart is then fed with a steady flow of blood, which not only keeps the volume of blood in the heart constant but also helps maintain the cardiac output and general circulation,” she further elaborated on how the calf’s ability to support circulation makes it directly impacts cardiovascular health.

Dangers of prolonged sitting

Sitting for long hours may disrupt circulation. (Picture credit: Freepik )
Sitting for long hours may disrupt circulation. (Picture credit: Freepik )

What happens when this natural pump system does not work? Dr Palimkar named the risks, “Malfunctioning calf-pump system significantly increases the likelihood of people having chronic venous issues, oedema (swelling), and even a higher chance of bad circulatory consequences. As an example, patients with a weaker calf-pump function suffer from the most severe stages of venous disease.”

To ensure your second heart stays strong, the cardiologist recommended exercising the calf muscles. She also urged being active and not sitting or standing for very long periods. Describing the risk, she said, “This ‘second heart’ effect is of a mechanical nature and depends on movement; very long periods of sitting or standing still can have the opposite effect, that is, they can make venous return slower and increase the risk of blood stasis (risk of blood staying in one place) in the legs.”

This is why one should stay active, keep moving, and avoid sitting or standing for long periods so that the cardiovascular functions work efficiently.

Jassi Weds Jassi REVIEW: Harshh Vardhan Singh Deo Starrer Wins Heart With Humour And Emotions

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Film:
Jassi Weds Jassi

Bubble Rating:
3.5 stars

Director: Paran Bawa

Cast: Harshh Vardhan Singh Deo, Rehmat Rattan, Ranvir Shorey, Sikandar Kher, Sudesh Lehri, Grusha Kapoor, Manu Rishi Chadha

Platform: Theatres

Jassi Weds Jassi Review

In a year packed with big-budget spectacles and over-the-top comedies that try too hard, Jassi Weds Jassi stands out for doing the exact opposite — keeping it simple, rooted, and genuinely funny. Director Paran Bawa crafts a delightful throwback to the era of Khosla Ka Ghosla and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. He reminded us that heart and humour often matter more than gloss and grandeur. To find out what happens, read our review of Jassi Weds Jassi.

Plot & Setting

Set in Haldwani, Uttar Pradesh (now Uttarakhand), in 1996, the story follows Jaspreet aka Jassi (Harshh Vardhan Singh Deo), a hopeless romantic on a mission to find true love. His quest leads him to Jasmeet (Rehmat Rattan), only to realise that before winning her heart, there is a big hurdle (without giving spoilers), Jaswinder (Sikandar Kher), also nicknamed Jassi

In the process, he disrupts the peaceful life of Sehgal (Ranvir Shorey) and his wife, Sweeti (Grusha Kapoor). Their own marriage is teetering on the edge of chaos. What unfolds is a hilarious series of misunderstandings, emotional twists, and warm moments of love and family.

Performances

At its core, Jassi Weds Jassi works because of its performances. Harshh Vardhan Singh Deo and Rehmat Rattan make for a fresh, endearing pair. Their chemistry feels effortless, sweet, awkward, and real. Harshh brings sincerity to his role, and Rehmat lights up the screen with her innocence and charm.

The veterans, however, steal the show. Ranvir Shorey is an absolute riot, delivering dry humour and comic timing reminiscent of his Khosla Ka Ghosla days. Sikandar Kher, in a surprising turn, flexes his funny bone with understated brilliance; his “tough guy” exterior blends beautifully with situational comedy. Manu Rishi Chadha adds earthy humour, while Sudesh Lehri and Grusha Kapoor lend their seasoned comic energy, though one wishes they had a bit more screen time.

Music

The music album of Jassi Weds Jassi deserves a special mention; it’s one of the most understated yet delightful soundtracks of 2025. Songs like “Chamkeela”, “Make Up Na Laya Kar”, “Bhool Jawanga”, and “Ishq E Desi” bring back the melody and fun of old-school Hindi film music. Each track feels situational yet hummable, with Chamkeela and Make Up already trending on Instagram Reels and Spotify, turning into sleeper chartbusters.

Direction & Writing

Paran Bawa’s direction is clean and confident. He doesn’t chase punchlines — he builds moments. The humour stems from situations and relationships rather than slapstick. The art direction and production design beautifully capture 90s North India, complete with vibrant weddings, quirky relatives, and the nostalgia of a simpler time.

The pre-climax sequence is the film’s crown jewel — a brilliantly executed Ramayana-inspired skit that pays tribute to Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’s iconic Mahabharata play. It’s meta, hilarious, and a smart homage that cinephiles will relish. The kidnapping scene later evokes the chaos and fun of Fukrey and 90s Hollywood comedies, adding to the film’s madcap charm.

Conclusion

Jassi Weds Jassi isn’t a flashy, laugh-a-minute blockbuster. It’s a clean, family-friendly comedy with heart — the kind of film that leaves you smiling as the credits roll. Yes, the first half could’ve been crisper, and a few jokes find their rhythm much later. But its second half more than makes up for it.

With genuine humour, warm nostalgia, and performances that click, Jassi Weds Jassi reminds us of a time when laughter didn’t need noise, just good writing, good actors, and a good heart. The film is a rooted, fun, and feel-good comedy that opens the wedding season with a smile.

Single Salma Review: Heart in The Right Place, but Execution Falters

by jummy84 October 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Nachiket Samant’s Single Salma is a film that means well, it wants to talk about choice, womanhood, and the complex mess of modern relationships, but the storytelling doesn’t always keep up with its good intentions. Its heart is firmly in the right place; its execution, unfortunately, isn’t.

Set in Lucknow, the film follows Salma (Huma Qureshi), a bright, no-nonsense woman who works for the city’s urban planning department. She’s the family’s emotional and financial anchor, engaged to Sikander (Shreyas Talpade), a dependable, well-meaning man who represents traditional stability. Salma, though, isn’t entirely convinced she wants the life that everyone else seems to have charted for her.

The film begins on a refreshingly grounded note. For once, government officers are shown working in earnest, preparing for a Smart City Conclave in London with genuine commitment. Even abroad, they’re seen learning and representing their city with professionalism, a detail rarely captured with such authenticity in Hindi cinema.

In London, Salma’s world shifts. She meets Meet (Sunny Singh), a charming planner from the London town planning department who believes in open relationships and is already involved with his girlfriend (Lauren Gottlieb). Drawn to his easy confidence and free-spirited approach to life, Salma finds herself pulled into unfamiliar emotional territory. When she gives in to her desire and loses her virginity to him, what follows is confusion, she wants something deeper, and later he too convinces himself he should marry her and follows her to Lucknow.

The film’s most compelling stretch comes when Salma becomes the target of public shaming after photos of her in a bikini are leaked online. Instead of melodrama, Samant crafts these moments with empathy. Her male colleagues rally to defend her, a quietly powerful reversal of stereotype. It’s a scene that captures both the vulnerability and dignity of a woman reclaiming her narrative.

Huma Qureshi carries the film on her capable shoulders, lending Salma warmth, humour, and a believable mix of confidence and self-doubt. Though her character feels like a patchwork of different ideas. She gamely rises above it all and gives her 100 percent. Shreyas Talpade plays Sikander with restraint and decency, and with his comic timing spot on. He’s the narrator of the film, something like the unreliable narrator of How I Met Your Mother and we wish was given a freer hand. Sunny Singh’s Meet exudes an easy charm that later gives way to unexpected introspection. Navni Parihar as Mrs. Shrivastav, Salma’s senior colleague, and Nidhi Singh as her outspoken best friend, add texture and energy, giving the film its liveliest exchanges.

However, despite the strong performances, Single Salma struggles with tone and rhythm. What begins as a layered exploration of identity and independence slips into formula, the conservative girl falling for the first man who makes her feel seen, mistaking attraction for love. There are moments that remind you of Queen (2014), but without its effortless flow or organic humour. Where Queen felt like an unforced journey of self-discovery, Single Salma feels more like a well-meant essay on liberation.

Sohail Sen’s music barely registers, and the film’s pacing, particularly in the second half, is uneven. The narrative loses its spark just when it should be finding its emotional peak.

Still, there’s sincerity in Single Salma, in its attempt to portray an independent woman not as a stereotype but as someone flawed, curious, and learning to define herself beyond societal labels. It’s a film that tries to empower through empathy rather than rebellion, even if the craft doesn’t always rise to the occasion.

All-in-all, Single Salma is a well-intentioned, occasionally moving story that needed sharper writing and lighter storytelling to truly shine.

Bigg Boss 19: Shehnaaz Gill’s Emotional Response To Trolls Calling Shehbaz Badesha A “Dependent” Brother Will Melt Your Heart! | Glamsham.com

Shehnaaz Gill has come out in strong support of her brother Shehbaaz Badesha, who is currently a contestant on Bigg Boss 19. In a recent interview with Zoom, the actress-singer opened up about her brother’s journey on the show and addressed comments about him being “financially dependent” on her.

Shehnaaz clarified that before Shehbaaz entered the Bigg Boss house, she had already warned him about the kind of taunts he might face. “When he was about to go inside, I told him to be ready because people would say he lives off his sister. His entry was also scripted differently — they wanted me to say certain lines, but I refused because I didn’t want him to be disrespected,” she explained. She added that while the introduction was meant to be humorous, viewers misunderstood it and took it seriously.

Reacting to Shehbaaz admitting on the show that he depends on her financially, Shehnaaz said there’s much more to their relationship than people see. “He has done so much for me. When I was in Bigg Boss, he handled everything for me — from management to decision-making. He even guided me about who was genuine and who wasn’t, and he was always right,” she said, praising her brother’s maturity and support.

Talking about his gameplay, Shehnaaz noted that Shehbaaz is being authentic in the Bigg Boss house. “He’s just being himself, but people can’t handle that. From the beginning, they’ve been comparing him to me and saying he doesn’t deserve to be there,” she said. Shehnaaz added that while her brother’s humor is genuine, some contestants have misunderstood his intentions.

The actress concluded by saying she is proud of Shehbaaz for staying true to himself despite criticism, and she continues to support him wholeheartedly from outside the house.

Mumbai orthopaedic surgeon explains the difference between heart attacks and cardiac arrest: ‘A heart attack is like a…’

by jummy84 October 27, 2025
written by jummy84

When it comes to heart-related emergencies, quick thinking and the right response can mean the difference between life and death. Yet, many people often confuse a heart attack with cardiac arrest – two conditions that sound similar but are vastly different in how they affect the body and how they should be treated. Understanding this distinction is crucial, as knowing what to do in those critical moments can help save lives.

Mumbai-based orthopaedic surgeon, health educator, and NutriByte Wellness co-founder Dr Manan Vora is explaining the key difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest – and sharing what steps to take during such medical emergencies.

In an Instagram video posted on October 27, the surgeon uses the metaphor of a house to explain the two conditions – “To understand the difference, imagine the heart is a house and the blood flowing is the plumbing system, the connecting pipes and the taps,” – and stresses that knowing the difference might actually save a life.

Heart attack

Dr Vora explains that a heart attack occurs when blood vessels become blocked, causing symptoms such as chest pain and dizziness – though the person typically remains conscious and responsive.

He elaborates, “A heart attack is like a blocked pipe. The blood cannot reach certain parts of the heart because of a blockage in the blood vessels. During a heart attack, the patient feels chest pain, dizziness and nausea. Crucially, the patient is still alive and breathing and may even be calling for help.”

Cardiac arrest

The surgeon likens cardiac arrest to a sudden electrical failure in a house – a metaphor he uses to describe how the heart abruptly stops functioning. He explains, “In a cardiac arrest, the heart suddenly stops beating. Consequently, blood stops circulating completely. This means you have no time and the patient needs CPR or a defibrillator right away.”

When blood flow stops, the person collapses almost instantly. Dr Vora highlights the gravity of the condition, stressing that cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency where every second matters.

What to do during emergencies?

Dr Vora emphasises, “If someone is going through a heart attack, you need to call an ambulance immediately. However, if they suddenly collapse and stop breathing, that’s a cardiac arrest, and you need to act fast with CPR.” He advises starting CPR right away and using a defibrillator if available. Prompt action is the key to handling emergencies like these because a few seconds can make the difference between life and death.

Did you know babies don’t sweat much? Physician explains why excessive sweating could be a sign of chronic heart disease

by jummy84 October 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Did you know that babies don’t actually sweat much? Unlike adults, their tiny bodies regulate temperature differently because their sweat glands are still developing. So, if your baby seems to sweat frequently or excessively, it might signal something more than just warmth or activity.

According to Dr Mezher, excessive sweating in babies could be a cause for concern. (Unsplash)

Dr Sermed Mezher, a family medicine physician and health content creator based out of England, shared the interesting fact that babies rarely sweat – and when they do excessively, it could be a cause for concern. In an Instagram video posted on October 27, the physician reacts to a clip of a woman showing her sweaty baby and explains that such excessive sweating may indicate an underlying medical condition.

Should babies sweat?

Dr Mezher explains that babies typically don’t sweat much because their sweat glands are still immature and not yet fully developed. In fact, the physician notes that babies are more likely to experience dry skin than excessive sweating.

He elaborates, “Instead, infants rely more on other mechanisms – like increased blood flow to the skin or changes in body position – to regulate their temperature. Because of this, mild warmth or activity usually doesn’t cause a baby to sweat noticeably.”

When to worry

Dr Mezher warns that persistent or uncontrollable sweating, especially while feeding or sleeping, is not normal, and can be a sign of chronic disease. Possible causes could be linked to heart problems, infections, metabolic or endocrine disorders. He points out, “That could include things like excessive production of thyroid hormone. It can also be an early sign of congenital heart disease for which they are coping for now, but sometimes a stressor can actually change that.”

Moreover, according to the physician, patients with cystic fibrosis can also experience excessive sweating as newborns. He explains, “This is associated with recurrent respiratory infections because of a mutation in the CFTR gene. This mutation changes how salts are secreted in the body leading to thick secretions that are tough to get rid of.”
