5 health benefits of line dancing – according to science

by jummy84 November 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Rockhampton , Line dancing is enjoying a global resurgence, rising to a level of popularity not seen since Billy Ray Cyrus’ Achy Breaky Heart topped the charts in 1991.

5 health benefits of line dancing – according to science

But it’s no longer just for cowgirls and cowboys. While traditionally associated with country music, line dancing has evolved to include variations of waltz, swing, salsa, disco and rock’n’roll.

This kind of synchronised dance involves people in rows repeating choreographed steps. It doesn’t require a partner, so you can turn up solo and learn on the go. And its popularity is rising among people of all ages.

So, why has line dancing gone viral?

The craze is partly driven by social media users embracing line dancing’s easy-to-follow routines. But a post-COVID pandemic demand for gathering in community has also seen line dancing groups spring up in bars, clubs, community halls and outdoor areas.

It’s also nostalgic and accessible, with an emphasis on fun rather than skill.

While doing research on its health benefits, one of us decided to give line dancing a go. Unable to follow the steps at first, it was a lesson in humility. But a year later, Danielle is still happily pounding the floor each week in her line dancing group – and encouraging others to give this science-backed mood-booster a try.

Our research reviewed 16 studies about line dancing. Here are the health benefits we found.

1. It’s a workout

–

Line dancing is good exercise: it incorporates coordination and balance with a cardiovascular workout.

The steps can also be adapted to match the dancers’ abilities. Energetic young people might bootscoot and boogie while more mature dancers can shuffle and sway – all to the same tune.

Research has shown regular physical activity helps prevent many chronic conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and even some cancers.

In older people, line dancing has been shown to improve motor skills, flexibility and gait, reducing fall risk and helping to maintain good overall health.

2. Good for mental health

–

Our study showed line dancing boosts mental well-being, reduces anxiety and depression, and relieves stress.

This is largely due to endorphins, the pain-relieving chemicals the body releases during exercise. They improve mood and can leave dancers feeling elated and full of joy and self-confidence after a session.

But you don’t even have to participate to feel the benefits. There is evidence to suggest that watching dancing can stimulate some of the body’s mood-boosting responses and reduce stress.

3. It’s social – but you don’t need a partner

With more than 43 per cent of young people saying they feel persistently lonely, and elder isolation on the rise, finding connection with other people is more important than ever.

Research shows participating in sport – and particularly team activities – is a protective factor against loneliness.

Compared to partnered types of dance, such as ballroom, line dancing might seem like a solitary activity. But this actually means people can show up alone and still connect with others, uniting around an activity. People get involved with a community and may even develop friendships.

We found that line dancing can also break down cultural and social barriers and expand social support networks, helping to develop a sense of belonging and unity.

4. A workout for your brain, too

–

The combination of stomps, backsteps and kicks can be overwhelming at first. But the sense of achievement when you master these steps is worth it.

Studies have shown that, as line dancers become more proficient, their memory and brain function improve.

There is evidence that this can help prevent dementia and improve university students’ concentration.

5. Line dancing builds community

–

Our research found that line dancing has benefits beyond the individual.

For example, in one 2008 study, researchers interviewed 30 women aged over 60 about their involvement in line dancing. Many said it led them to become more engaged in the community, including volunteering.

But if you’re thinking of getting involved yourself, a word of warning: there may be no turning back. Line dancing can be profoundly addictive and seriously fun. SKS SKS

Dharmendra health updates Live: Actor discharged from hospital, Bollywood events cancelled

by jummy84 November 12, 2025

Dharmendra health updates Live: Dharmendra is going back home today.

Veteran actor Dharmendra, 89, was discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Wednesday morning after his family decided to continue his treatment at home, the doctor treating him told PTI. He had been admitted a few days ago for certain medical tests, though neither the family nor the hospital revealed details about his condition.

On Tuesday, rumours about Dharmendra’s death circulated widely, prompting his family to dismiss the reports and appeal for privacy.

“The media seems to be in over-drive and spreading false news. My father is stable and recovering. We request everyone to give our family privacy. Thank you for the prayers for papa’s speedy recovery,” daughter Esha wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.

Dharmendra’s wife, actor-politician Hema Malini, also condemned the “irresponsible” media coverage of his health in a post on X, calling it “unforgivable.”

“What is happening is unforgivable! How can responsible channels spread false news about a person who is responding to treatment and is recovering? This is being extremely disrespectful and irresponsible. Please give due respect to the family and its need for privacy,” Malini wrote.

Meanwhile, several Bollywood stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, were spotted visiting the veteran actor at the hospital.

The He-Man of Bollywood has a cinematic career spanning over six decades, with more than 300 films to his credit. Dharmendra is celebrated for his performances in classics such as Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Phool Aur Patthar, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Seeta Aur Geeta, Raja Jani, Jugnu, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Dost, Sholay, Pratiggya, Charas and Dharam Veer, among others.

In 2023, he appeared in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar—a romantic comedy starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt as the lead couple, Rocky and Rani. The film revolves around their contrasting personalities and their decision to live with each other’s families for three months before getting married.

Apollo Hospital cardiologist shares warning signs of sleep trouble that may harm heart health: ‘Loud snoring…’

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Sleep is the cornerstone of good health, and cutting corners means compromising on your well-being extensively. While getting adequate sleep is an essential health habit, sometimes your rest still gets interrupted, irrespective of your efforts. These interruptions can hint at underlying conditions that require prompt medical attention.

If you are sleep is often disrupted, there may be underlying issues which require attention. (Picture credit: Shutterstock)

To learn more about these red-flag sleep interruptions, HT Lifestyle reached out to Dr Rajesh Matta, consultant interventional cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai. He emphasised that if someone frequently experiences sleep disruptions, it should not be taken lightly. A proper evaluation should be scheduled, as he noted that sleep is closely tied to heart health, and any unresolved sleep problems may lead to serious cardiac issues in the long run.

Signs you need to pay attention to

Dr Matta revealed that sleep-related problems can show up in various ways: some occur during sleep, some appear immediately after waking up, and others affect your health more gradually over time.

As soon as you wake up, your own body gives clues that sleep wasn’t as restorative as it should have been. Dr Matta urged that everyone should pay attention to how they feel after waking up in the morning, as some signs of poor sleep may also indicate heart-related concerns.

“Pay attention to morning symptoms. If you’re waking up with headaches, feeling unrested despite adequate time in bed, or experiencing a racing heart or palpitations, these could be red flags,” The cardiologist explained. “Excessive daytime fatigue that interferes with daily activities isn’t normal; it often indicates poor sleep quality that’s stressing your cardiovascular system.”

While post-sleep signs are usually more subtle and sometimes may be confused with tiredness, there are some sleep problems which show up as major disturbances during the night. The cardiologist shared, “Loud snoring, gasping, or choking during sleep are warning signs of sleep apnea, which dramatically increases risk for hypertension, arrhythmias, and heart failure.”

The other warning signs include difficulty controlling blood pressure despite medication, unexplained weight gain, or increased anxiety and irritability, as per Dr Matta. These are more long-term in nature, in contrast to the immediate signs mentioned earlier. But they all affect metabolic and cardiovascular health, and the cardiologist warned against ignoring them.

How to improve sleep?

Dr Matta recommended these 4 habits, which help to improve your sleep quality. Try adding them to your daily routine:

1. Establish a fixed wake time: This is more important than a fixed bedtime because it anchors your circadian rhythm. Within a week or two, one will naturally start to feel sleepy at an appropriate time.

2. Sunlight exposure: Get morning sunlight exposure within 30 minutes of waking; it sets your internal clock and improves sleep quality that night.

3. Do physical activity: Incorporate 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days, but finish at least three hours before bedtime. Exercise is one of the most powerful sleep aids, and it directly benefits the heart.

4. Create wind-down routine: 15 minutes of light reading or gentle stretching.

Nutritionist says if you really care about your father’s health, make sure he is having these 3 superfoods daily

by jummy84 November 10, 2025

As we age, it is essential to focus on a balanced diet rich in protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, while limiting processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive unhealthy fats. But do you want to know about specific foods that can help keep your dad healthy and strong? Also read | 5 superfoods you must include in your diet

Allicin in garlic is the magic compound that helps lower cholesterol.(pixabay)

In a November 4 Instagram post, nutritionist Shalini Sudhakar shared her advice on improving men’s health through the daily consumption of three superfoods. According to her, you should ask your father to consume roasted garlic cloves first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to reduce cholesterol and protect heart health, as roasting them in ghee activates the beneficial allicin compound.

Shalini also recommended eating soaked fenugreek (methi) seeds before each meal to control sugar levels and safeguard organs like the pancreas and liver due to their galactomannan content. She further advised fathers to consume roasted pumpkin seeds an hour before bed for better sleep, joint strength, and cancer prevention, crediting the omega-3, selenium, and lignans within the seeds.

‘When and how to consume are very important’

“If you really care about your father’s health, ensure that he is consuming these three superfoods every day. Making him listen is very difficult, but you have to do it. When to consume – and how to consume – is very important, so don’t miss out on that… take very good care of the man who carried you in his heart and on his shoulder.”

Here’s what Shalini suggested:

6-8 roasted garlic pods on an empty stomach in the early morning

“The allicin in garlic is very important to reduce the cholesterol level and protect his heart health. Roast the garlic in two to three drops of desi ghee to activate the allicin compound, making it very effective,” she said.

Soaked methi seeds

Shalini added, “He needs the galactomannan to control the sugar levels and protect his pancreas, kidneys and liver. Take three teaspoons of methi seeds and soak them overnight. Ask him to have one teaspoon of methi seeds 15 minutes before breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

Roasted pumpkin seeds

“The omega-3 and selenium will prevent any kind of joint pains and nervous weakness and strengthen the joints and the bones. Most importantly, the lignans in pumpkin seeds will prevent cancer. Dry roast pumpkin seeds and ask him to have one tablespoon 1 hour before going to bed. It will also help him sleep much better,” she concluded.

Experts weigh in on the hidden health impact of Delhi air pollution, beyond lungs: Skin, hair, bones, and even fertility

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Every winter, as a dense grey haze blankets Delhi, the familiar conversations around pollution return. But the crisis today goes far beyond coughing fits and watery eyes – it’s silently disrupting deeper aspects of health, from hormonal balance and fertility to skin, hair, and even bone strength. Doctors across specialities are reporting a steady surge in pollution-related ailments among Delhiites.

Experts advise reducing exposure and wearing masks as temporary solutions to protect yourself from pollution.(Hindustan Times)

Also Read | Cancer surgeon suggests 6 food groups to protect against rising lung cancer risk due to Delhi pollution

HT Lifestyle spoke to three specialists for their insights on how Delhi’s toxic air is taking a toll not just on the lungs but also on the skin, hair, fertility, and bone health. The experts include Dr Karuna Malhotra – founder, cosmetologist, and aesthetic physician at Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic, Rajouri Garden; Dr Shobha Gupta – medical director and IVF expert at Mother’s Lap IVF Centre, Pitampura; and Dr Akhilesh Rathi – director of joint replacement, orthopaedics, and sports injury at Sri Action Balaji Hospital, Paschim Vihar, and founder of Rathi Orthopaedic and Spine Clinic, Dwarka.

Skin and hair

As the body’s outermost barrier and first line of defence, the skin and hair bear the brunt of toxic air exposure – taking some of the harshest hits from Delhi’s rising pollution levels. Dr Malhotra explains, “Air pollution in Delhi is a cocktail of particulate matter, industrial chemicals, and toxins. These particles are so tiny that they penetrate the skin barrier, triggering inflammation, pigmentation, dullness, early wrinkles, and stubborn acne flare-ups.”

Pollution particles trigger the production of free radicals that break down collagen, causing the skin to age faster. The cosmetologist also highlights that dermatology clinics across the city are reporting a surge in cases of contact dermatitis and eczema during peak pollution months.

Hair is just as vulnerable – pollutants settle on the scalp, clog follicles, weaken the roots, and interfere with the natural hair growth cycle. Dr Malhotra points out, “Over the past few years, I’ve seen a sharp rise in brittle hair, excessive hair fall, and itchy, flaky scalp conditions every time pollution peaks.” She stresses the need for double cleansing and antioxidant-rich skincare routines during this season.

Pregnant women and fertility

A growing yet often overlooked consequence of air pollution is its harmful impact on reproductive health – affecting fertility, hormonal balance, and even pregnancy outcomes. According to Dr Gupta, “Long-term exposure to toxic air increases oxidative stress in the body. This can disturb hormonal function in women, reduce egg quality, and in pregnant women, raise the risk of complications such as low-birth-weight babies and preterm deliveries.”

The gynaecologist explains that microscopic pollutants can enter the bloodstream and even cross the placental barrier. Expecting mothers with pre-existing respiratory conditions often experience heightened breathlessness, fatigue, and disrupted sleep during periods of severe pollution.

Men aren’t spared either – they are affected equally. Prolonged exposure to air pollution can drastically plummet sperm count and motility. Dr Gupta notes, “Among couples trying to conceive, we are increasingly seeing pollution-linked decreases in sperm health. This is now an emerging factor in infertility, especially in urban settings like Delhi.”

Bone health

While the effects of pollution on the skin and lungs are well recognised, its impact on bone health remains surprisingly underreported. According to Dr Rathi, “Air pollution interferes with how the body processes calcium and Vitamin D. Because people avoid going outdoors and sunlight is blocked by smog, Vitamin D deficiency becomes almost universal in winters.”

The orthopaedician points out that vitamin D deficiency weakens bones, raises the risk of fractures, and exacerbates conditions like osteoporosis. Moreover, pollutants can indirectly trigger inflammation in the body, intensifying joint pain – particularly among older adults.

Dr Rathi adds, “Many patients complain of stiffness, knee pain, and chronic fatigue during the pollution season. These are not just age-related changes; pollution is a key contributing factor.”

Experts advise following these steps to protect yourself from pollution, until a more sustainable solution is reached.(Image generated via ChatGPT)

A call for awareness and collective action

Dr Malhotra notes, “Pollution may be external, but its impact is deeply internal. Awareness and proactive care can prevent long-term damage.” While masks, air purifiers, and lifestyle tweaks can provide short-term relief, experts emphasise that meaningful change requires systemic, long-term solutions. Until then, individuals must take proactive steps to safeguard their health. Doctors recommend adopting antioxidant-rich diets, using air purifiers indoors, following regular detoxifying skincare routines, supplementing with vitamin D and omega-3s, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak smog hours.

Delhi’s pollution crisis has evolved from an environmental concern into a full-blown public health emergency. Toxic air is silently damaging everything from skin and hair to hormonal balance, fertility, and bone strength. What makes it even more alarming is its invisibility – few connect everyday issues like fatigue, joint pain, or hair fall to pollution. As the city battles its annual smog surge, experts urge citizens to protect themselves while pushing for systemic change – because clean air isn’t a privilege, it’s a fundamental right.

Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar shares ‘3 small lifestyle habits’ that can make a big impact on your health

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

In our fast-paced lives, we often focus on the big, dramatic changes, detox plans, crash diets, or intense fitness routines, thinking that’s the only way to improve our health. But the truth is, it’s often the little, everyday habits that quietly shape how we feel, how much energy we have, and how our body functions over time.

Rujuta Diwekar shares simple tips for better health without major changes.

Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, who has worked with stars like Kareena Kapoor, shared in her November 5 Instagram post 3 simple habits that can make a big impact on your health, without turning your life upside down. (Also read: Nutritionist shares how you can hit your daily 10,000 steps goal at home in 60 minutes with easy exercises )

1. Food: Bring root vegetables back

Rujuta’s first tip is simple: include root vegetables in your weekly diet at least three times. Think arbi, konfa, suran, rataru, foods from the farm and forest that have been largely forgotten in the era of broccoli, arugula, avocado, and asparagus.

“Why bring these back? First, for their antioxidant activity,” she explains. “If you’re feeling low this winter, antioxidants help prevent congestion, runny noses, and dry skin and scalp. They keep you feeling warm, bright, and healthy from the inside.” Second, root vegetables work as prebiotics. “If winter has left you with bloating or gas, these will help fix your gut health in a simple, natural way.”

And third, they support hormonal health. “Whether it’s perimenopause, menopause, irregular periods, or even trying to get pregnant, including these root vegetables in your diet, at breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even as an evening snack can help regulate hormones.”

Rujuta promises that in the coming weeks, she’ll share recipes to include these vegetables in a wholesome, tasty way, but in the meantime, your mom’s kitchen likely already has everything you need.

2. Exercise: The evening ‘scroll’

Rujuta’s second tip is all about movement, but it’s not intense. “It’s a light, easy stroll in the evening or post-dinner, just before bed. Make sure it’s a stroll, not a brisk walk. You should be able to hum your favourite song as you do it. No getting out of breath,” she says.

In India, this is called Shata Pavli; in the West, it’s humorously known as the ‘Fart Walk’. “It helps digestion, releases excess gas, improves sleep, and is especially beneficial for people with high fasting sugars,” Rujuta explains. A simple 10-minute post-dinner walk can make a huge difference over time.

Rujuta Diwekar emphasises disconnecting from screens before bed and after waking, promoting mental well-being.(Google Gemini)

3. Sleep and screen time

Finally, Rujuta stresses the importance of disconnecting from gadgets. “Stay away from screens for 30 minutes before bedtime and 30 minutes after waking up. This helps your body sync with natural rhythms, allows you to process your day, delete unnecessary mental clutter, and feel more like yourself.
