Monsoons don’t just increase your chances of health illnesses and infections, they can also bring cancer risks. Yes, you read that right. In an Instagram post shared on August 24, Dr Tarang Krishna, MD, a cancer specialist, shared how monsoon becomes a cancer trap if you don’t keep in mind a few safety measures.

Monsoon could be a cancer trap?

Sharing the post, captioned, ‘This monsoon, your pakoa, your tea, even your tap water could be cancer traps’, Dr Krishna stressed, “We love the rains. But do we really know what comes with them?” He warned of the harmful effects of eating monsoon fish, floodwater bringing in toxins inside your home, and dampness caused by the rains, and also suggested a few tips that could protect you.

Here’s what the doctor said:

Floodwater

Per the cancer specialist, floodwater brings poison. He explained, “Floods mix sewage, pesticides, plastic waste, and heavy metals. Studies show floodwater in Indian cities contains arsenic, lead, and cadmium – all carcinogens.”

According to Dr Krishna, these seep into:

  • Drinking water: Increasing bladder and stomach cancer risk
  • Soil and crops: Contaminated vegetables carry toxins for months.

Monsoon fish and food chains

The cancer specialist explained, “Monsoon floods wash away industrial pollutants and sewage into rivers. Fish caught in these waters accumulate mercury and PCBs (both linked to cancer). A study in Mumbai markets found over 30 percent of monsoon fish samples exceeded safe heavy metal limits. That ‘fresh monsoon catch’ curry can secretly carry cancer-causing toxins.”

Dampness = Mould factories

After heavy rains, damp walls breed moulds such as Aspergillus flavus, Dr Krishna pointed out. He added, “They release aflatoxins, among the most potent natural carcinogens. The World Health Organisation states that 25-28 percent of liver cancer cases in Asia are linked to aflatoxin exposure, even office ACs and damp homes can spread spores you breathe in.”

Lastly, the cancer specialist warned, “Monsoon safety isn’t just mosquito nets and raincoats. It also includes:

  • Boil and filter water: Avoid untreated borewell /handpump water
  • Check the monsoon fish origin: Stick to trusted sellers
  • Store food dry: Toss out anything damp or mouldy.”

Abrol, orthopaedics and joint replacement surgeon, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals said, “Our spine has natural curves that distribute weight and absorb shock. Each vertebra is cushioned with soft, gel-like discs that act as shock absorbers. Common posture habits that can harm the spine:

1. Slouching while sitting, and hunching over a desk or leaning forward, puts excessive pressure on the lumbar discs, especially the lower back.

2. Constantly looking down at phones or laptops misaligns the spine, increasing stress on cervical and upper back discs.

3. Standing for prolonged hours and leaning on one leg with the weight unevenly distributed strains the lower spine.

Early warning signs of slipped disc:

Poor posture may not cause immediate pain, but a slipped disc can lead to:

  • Sharp pain in the lower back or neck
  • Pain radiating to arms or legs (sciatica is common in a lumbar slipped disc)
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Muscle weakness
  • Difficulty in bending, sitting, or walking for long durations

How to do posture correction?

Dr S. D. Abrol shared 7 lifestyle and posture changes that can reduce the risk of getting a slip disc:

1. Sit smart: Use an ergonomic chair with lumbar support, keeping your feet flat on the floor, avoiding crossing legs, and ensuring your screen is at eye level.

2. Strengthen core muscles: A strong core reduces spinal strain. Gentle yoga, pilates, and physiotherapy-guided exercises help build stability.

3. Lift properly: Lift by bending at the knees, keeping objects close to the body, and avoiding bending at the waist.

4. Take regular breaks: Move your body by standing, stretching, or walking every 30–40 minutes if you sit for long hours.

Suvarna Sawant, chief dietitian and HoD, clinical nutrition and dietetics, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai, told HT Lifestyle that honey has many benefits.

Talking about its antibacterial and wound-healing abilities, she elaborated, “Honey fights germs by pulling the water away from microbes by osmosis, it is naturally acidic (low pH), and when exposed to moisture, it releases small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, which is considered a mild disinfectant. Honey has been used as a dressing on burns, ulcers and difficult-to-heal wounds. “

Other than sharing unusual first-aid properties, honey also improves sore throat and boosts digestion. The dietician added, “Honey mixed with warm water and lemon is an ideal remedy for sore throats and cough. Likewise, honey is also a great source of energy, with one tablespoon offering about 64 calories. It is also beneficial for the gut bacteria.”

6 ways to add honey to your regular diet

Honey can be included in your diet in many productive ways, and not just as a substitute, but as the hero ingredient, bringing in many benefits.

Suvarna listed out 6 ways to add honey easily to your meals:

  1. Stir 1 tsp honey into warm water with lemon (nimbu-honey paani) in the morning.
  • Honey + curd (dahi) bowl: Add fresh seasonal fruit (banana, chikoo, strawberries) for a quick snack.
  • On roti/chapati or toast at breakfast, you can also add a pinch of dalchini (cinnamon).
  • A teaspoon in warm milk at bedtime for a soothing finish to the day.
  • Mix a spoon into herbal chai/tulsi infusion or simple warm water before a workout for quick energy.
  • Lemon–honey gargle/tea when your throat feels scratchy (sip, don’t scald).

Which is better- raw or processed honey?

Now, since we are going down the rabbit hole of honey, from health benefits to meal options, let’s also take a closer look at the source of the honey, and which is better: raw or processed, for you.

The dietician weighed in on this and declared raw honey as healthy. “Raw honey is considered to be healthier as compared to processed honey. Its ability to fight off germs comes from a bee enzyme (glucose oxidase),” she added more about the advantage of raw honey.

Processed honey may not contain the antibacterial properties of raw honey, as Suvarna emphasised, “Due to heat and light, this enzyme and other bioactive compounds slowly degrade, so the processed, over-heated honey ends up losing most of its antibacterial ability and soothing effect. Processed honey is certainly better in taste and texture, but raw honey is comparatively superior for functional benefits.”

What does raw honey look like?

Further confirming this, a honey expert, Yusuf Galabhaiwala, Founder of HoneyAllDay, also shared with us that raw honey is better. Because it is not heated, its original taste and thickness remain intact.

Distinguishing between raw and processed honey, he said, “Raw honey may look cloudy or crystallise with time, but that’s completely normal. Those are signs that it hasn’t been processed. Processed honey is made to look perfect, clear, smooth, and pourable. But to achieve that, it’s heated and filtered heavily. In the process, it loses most of what makes honey special. The taste becomes flat, and the natural benefits are reduced.”

To be healthy, organic, raw honey is suitable, as it retains all the natural enzymes, nutrients, and antibacterial properties.

Bhumi said she started her day with running, followed by a nutritious breakfast with nuts and fruits, and dedicated an hour to exercise daily. She also prioritised completing 7,000-8,000 steps per day to stay active.

Vogue India quoted Bhumi as saying, “I’ve lost over 35kg, after gaining 30kg for a film. Since then, it’s been a constant process of improvement — but I didn’t do it by starving myself. Are saunas actually good for you? | Health

Finland is the undisputed sauna capital of the world, with approximately one sauna for every 1.6 people. But voluntary sweating is starting to catch on elsewhere: according to the British Sauna Society, a not-for-profit group promoting sauna culture, the number of public saunas in Britain has more than doubled over the past year.

Are saunas good for those who use them? Setor Kunutsor, a cardiologist from the University of Manitoba, thinks of saunas as a source of controlled, gentle stress. A short burst of heat gets the heart pumping faster, blood vessels opening wider, and the body beginning to sweat—changes that look a lot like what happens during a brisk walk. “A standard 15-minute sauna session triggers the same heart-rate and circulation boost you’d expect from moderate exercise,” says Dr Kunutsor. Over time, he says, these repeated pseudo-workouts might teach the body to better handle stress, dial down inflammation, and protect the brain and blood vessels.

There is some research to support this. A decade ago Jari Laukkanen from the University of Eastern Finland co-led an observational study based on data from more than 2,300 middle-aged men in Finland. He found that men who visited the sauna two to three times a week had a 27% reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared with those who went just once a week. The benefit increased to 50% for men who went four to seven times per week.

Later studies on the same cohort by Dr Laukkanen and Dr Kunutsor seemed to suggest benefits that went beyond the heart. The team found that going to the sauna frequently, compared with only once a week, was associated with an almost 80% lower risk of developing psychosis and a two-thirds lower risk of developing dementia.

The problem with such studies is that men who use a sauna every other day are likely to be wealthier and healthier than men who do not. Although the authors adjusted for age, socioeconomic status, physical activity and alcohol intake, it is still too soon to draw robust conclusions. Other confounding factors may still be unaccounted for, says Eva Prescott from Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg University Hospital in Copenhagen. There are also limited studies on women, younger people and those from non-European backgrounds, whose responses might be different from those of older white men. Nor is it clear if the Finnish results are directly transferable to countries like Britain, where sauna use is rarer, says Gabrielle Reason, director of the British Sauna Society.

To truly pin down if saunas have an effect on human health, scientists need to conduct randomised controlled trials (RCTs), the gold standard in evaluating health interventions. In such trials scientists randomly assign participants into experimental groups and control groups to eliminate bias. RCTs on sauna use do exist, but so far their evidence has proved inconclusive. One trial from 2022, again conducted by Dr Laukkanen and Dr Kunutsor, found that participants who combined sauna with exercise experienced greater improvements in blood pressure and cardio-respiratory fitness than those who only hit the gym. But a different RCT by other researchers did not find any positive cardiovascular health benefits from regular sauna use. The only way to get to the bottom of the issue is to do more and bigger RCTs until reproducible findings emerge. Until then, expect some heated debates.

Dr Aravind Badiger further shared key brain habits that can help in avoiding Alzheimer’s:

1. Stay active physically

Exercise regularly will boost blood flow to the brain, suppress inflammation, and stimulate the release of protective chemicals. Even 30 minutes of brisk walking, yoga, or cycling a day, five days a week, will sharply lower the risk of intellectual decline.

2. Challenge the mind

Brain exercise is mental exercise. Reading, puzzles, learning another language, or playing an instrument exercises brain links and builds cognitive reserve that delays dementia.

3. Eating food that nourishes the brain

4. Get enough sleep

The brain’s health is determined by having sufficient sleep. At deep sleep, the brain also removes harmful proteins such as beta-amyloid, which is linked with Alzheimer’s disease. Adults require 7–8 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night.

5. Reduce stress

Chronic stress and depression both accelerate brain aging. Evidence-based strategies to promote mental health and cognitive performance include mindfulness, meditation, relaxation breathing techniques, and physical relaxation activities.

6. Continue to be socially active

Developing relationships with people protects the brain, but social isolation raises the risk of dementia. Both intellectual and emotional stimulation can be obtained through encouraging communication, taking part in group activities, and having deep discussions.

Women’s health coach Dilan, who is a 10 year cancer survivor shared why he chose to follow intermittent fasting every single day for over 15 years – and it is not in order to lose weight or internet trends. He explains that it was a way of giving his body the rest it desperately needed. In an Instagram post from July 29, the health coach revealed how not eating breakfast helped his cancer journey.

A wake-up call after cancer

Dilan rejects the common belief that constant snacking or eating every 3 hours boosts metabolism, saying: “Because I learned (the hard way) what happens when the body never gets a break.” He further explained, “When you’re constantly feeding, your body is constantly digesting.”

His journey into fasting was not by choice – a cancer diagnosis forced him to reevaluate everything about his lifestyle, including food, stress and sleep. Reassessing his lifestyle choices made him realize that the body needs time to heal, which only happens when you stop interrupting it. Constantly ingesting food gets the body stuck in digestion mode, never getting the opportunity to repair.

What happens during fasting?

Dilan explains, “When you fast, even just for part of the day, something powerful kicks in. It’s called autophagy.” Autophagy is the body’s fundamental process for self-degradation, where cells break down and recycle their own damaged or unnecessary components. Dubbing it as ‘your cells literally start cleaning house’, the fitness coach further elaborated that when damaged cells are eliminated, inflammation drops and hormonal balance is restored, and the body gets a break.

Constant eating can backfire

Most people start consuming food the moment they wake up and keep eating until they go to bed, which according to Dilan, leaves little room for cellular repair, contributing to fatigue and inflammation. “You don’t need to fear hunger,” he stresses, “You need to fear what happens when your body never gets the chance to rest.”

For him, intermittent fasting is not a quick fix or a trendy diet – it is a sustainable way of life built on respect for his body and its potential to heal. After surviving cancer, fasting became his tool for balance, resilience, and long-term health.
