Mary Berry reveals secret to happy marriage with 93-year-old husband

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

We’re at a riverside club near her Oxfordshire home for our photoshoot and interview and it’s nice to be greeted by a woman with perfect manners, who looks as pleased to see you as she would when lifting a perfectly cooked chicken out of the oven. In her 91st year [her 90th birthday was on 24 March], she’s here with Freddie, one of her two working cocker spaniels, who, despite already having had an hour-long walk in the countryside, looks up at her imploringly. I know how you feel, Freddie. We all want to have a bit of attention from Dame Mary.

I first met her 31 years ago when she was plain Mrs Berry and I attended an Aga cookery course at her home. Three decades on, she’s as beady as ever, inspecting what she’s about to wear and complimenting her assistant on her pink jumper. She’s filmed a new six-part series, Mary at 90: a Lifetime of Cooking, in which she looks back at her long career on television, as well as concocting modern twists to some of her own favourite recipes, with six famous faces, including Jamie Oliver, Gabby Logan and Tom Allen.

ITV footage from the 70s shows Mary demure, round-faced, with perfect RP, in a chintzy blouse. But behind those periwinkle eyes and that fluting voice lies ferocious drive. “Life is competitive. And whether you’re going for a job, or playing a sport, it’s good to do everything well,” she says now.

She is also a culinary time capsule, noting (and using) the advent of five spice, fennel, fresh ginger. She can pinpoint the arrival of tin foil. “I was working for Home and Freezer Digest, and I remember the editor coming in and saying, ‘Look what’s arrived from America!’ The first thing we said was, ‘Do we use the shiny side or the dull side? Does it matter?’”

Former The Great British Bake Off presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, current judge Paul Hollywood and former judge Mary Berry. BBC

Today, she has written more than 70 books that have sold over five million copies. Despite her drive, it was Delia Smith who pointed out, years ago, visiting Mary and her husband Paul Hunnings at their home, that she was underpaid. “Oh, Delia was absolutely brilliant. She came to stay with her husband Michael and we chatted about all sorts of things. I mean, you should never discuss money, sex or religion. But we did discuss money. She said, ‘You’re not being paid enough for your writing. I know an agent, Felicity Bryan, and I’ll ring her tonight.’ And the next day I got a postcard from Felicity saying, ‘Can we meet?’ And I’m still with her agency for my books.” [Bryan died in 2020.]

Looking back at the archive footage, it’s clear that TV chefs today don’t know how lucky they are. Mary recalls her first appearance in the mid-70s on Good Afternoon, ITV’s magazine show, in which she was to demonstrate the principles of a freezer. “I wrote a book for Marks & Spencer about how to freeze things well, because if you put something in the freezer which is grotty, it will come out grotty.

“There was no background help [for the TV appearance]. I had to bring in everything, every pot, pan, knife. All the food, vegetables, fish, mince, seasoning. I would be picked up in a taxi in the dark and arrive at Thames Television, where the tables were still set with newspapers from last night’s bulletin. They’d build a kitchen, and stick a clock on the wall, but the drawers didn’t open. There was no drain; water from the tap would empty into a bucket beneath my feet. If I turned the tap on too strongly, to wash a cabbage, say, and got carried away chatting to Judith [Chalmers, the Good Afternoon presenter], the bucket underneath would overflow and we would be paddling in water.”

After her initial invitation, Mary became a regular, standing alongside Chalmers, showing viewers how to cook. She could hardly have known it, but her first job for the Electricity Board in Bath, demonstrating how electric ovens can create the perfect sponge, was ideal training.

Watching herself back, Mary is helpless with laughter. “My voice! It was so high-pitched. But I had one aim. And that was to get people to cook and enjoy it as much as I did.” Recipes would be provided for viewers, but only ones who bothered to send in that historical artefact, a stamped addressed envelope. “Ask young people today what an SAE is, and they just look at you,” she marvels. As for brand Berry, was there a specially curated look? Zero attention. “There was no make-up. No wardrobe. You just arrived in your own clothes. And I would bring in daisies I’d picked from the garden.”

When Mary made her debut on The Great British Bake Off in 2010, it cemented her name with a new generation. She landed the job after an audition, “But I said, ‘I do need someone with a second opinion, and [a rare moment of vulnerability] I’m really not very good at bread. It’s not my forte.’ So that’s how Paul Hollywood came. And gosh, he was very different from me. I don’t want tears. So, if something had collapsed in the middle, I’d say to a contestant, ‘Do you know what you could do with that? You could just scoop a little bit out, fill it with fruit and cream, and you’ve got a pudding.”

Later, when Bake Off moved to Channel 4 in 2017, she stayed with the corporation. “I feel very cherished by the BBC, and it was quite right I stayed with them,” she says. And so, Mary’s TV career continued, with series such as Classic Mary Berry and a plethora of Christmas specials.

Away from the screen, she likes to play croquet, read, walk her dogs and cook with her grandchildren. She is trim but doesn’t go to the gym. “Why go to the gym when you can walk a dog for an hour?” She has kept up with new food trends (she has a lot of plant-based recipes in her latest show) and technology. “You have to go with the trends, and yes, we are on Instagram.”

She regrets her parents weren’t around to see her being made a Dame at Windsor Castle in 2021. “I am a great believer in genes. And my father was a remarkable man. My parents set an amazing example to me. When I found that I was going to be made a Dame, I couldn’t ring and tell them, but they are up there and looking down on me, and I know they’re quite pleased,” she says, smiling. “Your own children don’t notice, of course.”

Mary enjoys a positive attitude, which helped following the death of her son William, who was killed aged 19 in a car crash in 1989. It was after this tragedy that she started teaching Aga courses at her home, although I recall there was no indication that she had been bereaved. She was just as charming and chirpy as she is today. Perhaps the whole routine helped keep up her morale.

“I think of William every day. Of course I do. And if he were to walk through that door over there, I would say, ‘Where the hell have you been?’ I’m still very proud of him. I think of the joy he gave us. He was a lovely child, but you have to step back and think – I had wonderful parents, I’ve got two more children, Annabel and Tom, and my grandchildren. I mean, it would be devastating if you only had one child. I am very fortunate. And I have a husband who is 93.”

She says the recipe for her marital success is that she steps out of the house when she can see an argument brewing. “Paul always says that the secret to our long marriage is his saying, ‘Yes, dear’ to everything, and then going his own way. But we don’t argue. If any disagreements come up, I open the back door and just go out and maybe pick some flowers or get some apples. It’s amazing if you can walk away.

“Of course, if I was living in a top-floor flat, that would be difficult. But we respect each other. And I’m very lucky. He has mellowed in his old age and he’s become very appreciative of me. So I look after him, and it’s a great pleasure. That’s what I promised to do. For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer. And we are very happy in our dotage.”

Not that I can see Mary having an argument about much, with anyone. She is totally charming and enjoys a good relationship with all her guests in the new series, particularly Jamie Oliver: “I didn’t get any school qualifications, and neither did he,” she says.

Which of her guests learnt the most from cooking with her? “Oh, Alan Titchmarsh,” she says immediately. “We made spaghetti with salmon, and he hadn’t a clue. But he was so keen. To me, the huge reward was that 10 days after we recorded the show, he sent me an email with a picture of a table, all laid with the pasta dish and a glass of red wine. He said, ‘I did exactly what you said, and I’m very proud of this.’”

She smiles. “He gets the star. That is what I love. People stop me in the supermarket and say, ‘You inspired me to cook’. That is what television does. It’s a huge cookery class, for two or three million people. If I do things well, people will make them at home.” That was the aim all those years ago. Still is.

Their happy pace: A shadow lifts from women’s sprinting

by jummy84 October 11, 2025

Track is sport in its purest form. No rotating orb to smash through a net like in football; no mastering the tools like in golf; no hurling projectiles at each other like in tennis or badminton; no judging the swing through the air or deviation off the surface like in cricket; no harnessing the machine like in Formula 1; no inherent violence like in boxing or wrestling. Instead, it’s one pair of legs simply striving to outrun another over a designated distance in a scintillating battle of strength, grit and technique.

At the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last month, the US’s Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the 100m and 200m with margins of victory that were Bolt-like: 0.15 seconds and 0.46 seconds respectively. (AP)

Within track, the sprints are the most unadulterated expression of human excellence.

They don’t need guile like the middle-distance races do; nor do they call for the fine balance between pace and endurance that the marathon exemplifies. The sprints are raw pace, unbridled power, and a visceral desire to hit the tape faster than the next person while holding nothing back over 10, 20 or 40 seconds. The starting gun sounds like a suggestion in the longer races, a signal in the middle distances, and a call to arms in the sprints.

But sprinting has long battled the most-dreaded D-word in sport: doping.

On the men’s side, Michael Johnson changed the paradigm in the 400m in the 1990s, dominating the field and obliterating the world record to lift the cloud over the previous decade, when dope allegations flew thick and fast. In the 100m and the 200m, Usain Bolt’s arrival in the Aughts pulverised the past in a manner that only the greatest athlete ever could have.

Meanwhile, women’s sprinting was unable to shake off the real and perceived injustices of history. The 100m and 200m world records have been held by the American Florence Griffith-Joyner since 1988, and the 400m record by the German Marita Koch since 1985. Neither athlete ever failed a dope test, but suspicions have lingered about the use of performance-enhancing drugs that were not detectable at the time. Their records, fair or foul, are marked by invisible asterisks that women’s athletics has desperately wanted to erase.

The only way to do that is to go faster. And the wait may soon be over.

BRAVE NEW WORLD

It was a windy February day in 2001. In Dunbar, population 600, a census town in Georgetown County, South Carolina, preachers Melvin Jefferson and Johanna Jefferson welcomed a sixth child into their family. They called her Melissa.

At just five weeks old, baby Melissa underwent surgery to pump out curdled formula from her stomach. When she was 17, she donated stem cells to her father, who was suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome, after the hospital waitlist did not throw up any suitable candidates for a transplant.

Eighteen months before Melissa Jefferson was born, in the summer of 1999, the borough of Dullen, population 7,600, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, was graced by the arrival of its newest resident. With less than a year to go for the 2000 Summer Olympics, former track stars Willie McLaughlin and Mary McLaughlin called their third daughter Sydney.

Sydney McLoughlin’s early troubles were more within than without. As a young athlete, she constantly sought validation, beating herself up any time she felt she hadn’t done well enough. Battling these demons, she turned to the Christian gospel and emerged track-ready again.

Sydney McLaughlin-Lavrone’s 400m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo was the second-fastest in history, within two-tenths of a second of the time set by Koch 40 years ago.
Sydney McLaughlin-Lavrone’s 400m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo was the second-fastest in history, within two-tenths of a second of the time set by Koch 40 years ago.

This September, over the course of a week at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Sydney McLaughlin-Lavrone, now 24 and 26 years old, their double-barrelled surnames underlining their marital statuses, were crowned the queens of modern sprinting.

Jefferson-Wooden is the first woman since the Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 2013 to win the 100-200 sprint double at the Worlds. Her margins of victory in Tokyo were Bolt-like: 0.15 seconds in the 100m and 0.46 seconds in the 200m. Her timings were the fourth (100m) and eighth (200m) fastest ever recorded.

McLaughlin-Lavrone, the world’s pre-eminent 400m hurdler for the past five years — she has set or broken the world record six times since 2021 and won gold medals in both the Tokyo and Paris Olympics — inexplicably decided to switch to the 400-flat earlier this year. Her run at the Worlds was the second-fastest in history, within two-tenths of a second of the time set by Koch 40 years ago.

And so, through these two champions, born six seasons and 700 miles apart, the suspicious gap with the Dirty ’80s was narrowed at long last.

Though the Jamaican trio of Elaine Thomson-Herah, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson pushed closer and closer to the 100m and 200m marks over the past decade, and the Frenchwoman Marie Jose-Perec got within 0.65 seconds of the 400m record in the late 1990s, the final step has proved elusive.

It was fitting that Fraser-Pryce, now 38, finished sixth when Jefferson-Wooden won the 100m gold at the Worlds to complete the passing of the baton. In the 400m final, McLaughlin-Lavronne’s winning time of 47.78 was just 0.2 seconds faster than that of the Dominican Republic’s Mariliedy Paulino, who won silver but ran the third-fastest 400m ever.

The sign of a simultaneous revolution across the three sprints is here at last. At Tokyo 2025, Jefferson-Wooden and McLaughlin-Lavronne infused new life into women’s athletics. It feels, and not a moment too soon, like we’re closer than ever to finally moving on.

He shared, “It so happened that he offered me the second lead. I couldn’t believe my eyes, my ears that Dev Sahab was sitting in front of me. His son, Sunil, was also there. He told me, ‘He’s (his father) offering me a film. I said, ‘Wow!’ I went home and told my mother I was getting the second lead. The whole society went like, ‘Wohooo, Jaggu hero!’”

Jackie Shroff Was Replaced By Mithun Chakraborty

Remembering his replacement, Jackie Shroff shared, “After 15 days, Dev Sahab called and asked me to visit him. When I went there, he told me, ‘Mithun is here. YFN Lucci Has A Young Thug Feature On His Album & Fans Aren’t Too Happy

YFN Lucci’s decision to include Young Thug on his new album track “Still Waiting” has stunned fans, especially given the deeply personal and v*olent history between the two rappers.

Their feud dates back to 2017, when Young Thug called himself the new Tupac. Lucci responded by mocking the comparison.

In 2022, things took a darker turn when prosecutors claimed in a sweeping RICO indictment that affiliates of Young Thug’s YSL crew had asked Thug for permission to attempt a hit on Lucci while he was incarcerated. Lucci, who was also in jail at the time on separate charges, was reportedly the target of a jailhouse st*bbing attempt allegedly linked to this rivalry.

With all this history, the new collaboration has fans confused and upset. Many took to social media to question why Lucci would feature someone previously connected to such dangerous conflict.

The track is set to be unveiled at midnight with Lucci’s album, “Already Legend.”

What are your thoughts on this truce?

The True Story Behind Fonzie’s Infamous ‘Jump the Shark’ Episode on ‘Happy Days’

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

These days, it’s common parlance for TV fans to talk about a show “jumping the shark” when it starts declining in quality, usually due to some unexpected plot point or storyline. The origins of the expression date back nearly half a century, to the Happy Days episode “Hollywood, Part 3,” which aired on September 20, 1977 — the episode in which Henry Winkler’s Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli accepts a challenge to jump over a shark while waterskiing. The episode has long baffled fans — but as it turns out, one of classic TV’s oddest moments was set into motion by Winkler’s father, who insisted his son tell producers about his waterskiing skills.

For some fans, including comedian Jon Hein, that episode was the beginning of the end of Happy Days. Hein popularized the phrase “jump the shark” through his website of the same name, after recalling a college discussion with friends about when shows started going downhill, as he told Michigan Today in 2016. During that chat, Hein’s roommate said, “When Fonzie jumped the shark.”

Constance Wu has criticised Andrew Barth Feldman over his casting in the Broadway musical Maybe Happy Ending.

Constance Wu has criticised Andrew Barth Feldman over his casting in the Broadway musical Maybe Happy Ending

The actress, 43, says she is “so disappointed” after a series of conversations about Asian American representation, and shared her sentiments in a statement on Instagram revealing that she and Andrew had spoken on the phone about the controversy.

She wrote: “It was a peaceful call and we spoke at length, followed up by several emails/texts. It made me hopeful. But after a recent voice memo he sent me, all I can say is that I am so disappointed in him. And feeling pretty discouraged.”

Andrew joined the cast of the South Korea-set musical on 2 September for a nine-week run opposite his girlfriend Helen J Shen.

He replaced Darren Criss, who took a hiatus from the show on 31 August and is scheduled to return on 5 November.

Darren, who is Filipino American, previously led the production in the role of Oliver.

Constance added: “It’s hard to keep speaking up when it feels like no one is listening anymore in this new era. It’s exhausting and increasingly lonely. Once again, Asian Americans are left unheard, unacknowledged, invisible. Sadly, we’re used to this.

“A dozen or so folks bts at @maybehappyending have remained silent perhaps in the hopes that this will all fade away and you know what? It has. Your plan is working, guys – I heard your box office doing great.”

Writers Hue Park and Will Aronson responded earlier, saying in a joint statement: “We wrote a show about robots so we could engage more intimately with the most basic human questions of love and loss, creating the roles of Oliver and Claire to be avatars of these universal questions.

“They were meant to be products created by a global company, and so never bore Korean names, even in the Korean version of the show. At the same time, we understand that for many in the AAPI community, the makeup of our opening night cast became a meaningful and rare point of visibility.

“We’ve heard how strongly people connected to that representation, even if it wasn’t our original intent, and how this casting decision has re-opened old wounds.”

Constance also referenced a petition launched by B.D. Wong, who wrote on Instagram on 10 August that Andrew’s casting was “taken as a hard slap in the face of both the Asian actor community and the Asian audience.”

B.D. added more than 2,400 people had signed the petition, which he described as “a detailed articulation of our POV.”

Constance concluded: “I’m sorry to the thousands of people on @wongbd’s petition whose signatures he and the producers have yet to publicly acknowledge.

“And honestly, I’m sorry ABF that you’ve been (perhaps unfairly) saddled with this responsibility by your producers. But sometimes we don’t choose our responsibilities, they choose us. So the question that remains is: what are you choosing to do with it?”

Maybe Happy Ending, which follows two robots in Seoul who form an unlikely romance, was written by Aronson and Park and won six Tony awards, including best musical, in June.

Andrew’s limited run as Oliver continues until 1 November.

Shah Rukh Khan Wishes PM Narendra Modi Happy 75th Birthday

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has sent a special birthday message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, admiring his energy and “inspiring journey.” The actor expressed his wishes with folded hands in a video, stating that Modi’s energy at age 75 “even beats young people like us.”

Shah Rukh extended warm wishes to the Prime Minister on his birthday, praising his dedication and hard work. “Your journey from a small city to the global stage has been very inspiring,” Shah Rukh said. “Your discipline, hard work and dedication towards the country can be seen in this journey. I pray that you always stay healthy and happy.”

The video’s timing remains uncertain; however, Shah Rukh did not wear a sling on his arm. The actor paused filming for his movie King in July after a shoulder injury required him to undergo minor surgery. He recently shared that he is taking physiotherapy sessions for his shoulder and had been spotted wearing a sling during public outings last month.

Apart from Shah Rukh, several other celebrities, including Akshay Kumar, Vikrant Massey, Vicky Kaushal, and Kangana Ranaut, also wished the Prime Minister on his birthday.

Shah Rukh’s Upcoming Projects

Shah Rukh Khan, last seen in Dunki in 2023, is currently working on Siddharth Anand’s upcoming film King. The cast reportedly includes his daughter Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Saurabh Shukla, and Jaideep Ahlawat. During a recent #AskSRK session on X (formerly Twitter), Shah Rukh confirmed that he will soon resume shooting.

He will also make a special appearance in his son Aryan Khan’s directorial debut, The Bads of Bollywood, which premieres on Netflix on September 18.
