Curry Barker Made One of 2025’s Best Horror Films

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

We’re rapidly approaching the point where the most reliable route to becoming a horror director is to launch a short-form comedy career. Jordan Peele shocked the world with “Get Out,” Zach Cregger made it a pattern with “Barbarian” and “Weapons,” Danny and Michael Philippou jumped on the train with “Talk to Me” and “Bring Her Back.” Now, YouTube prankster Curry Barker has released one of the best horror films of 2025.

“Obsession” begins with the simplest of horror premises: Bear (Michael Johnston) is a shy and sensitive music store employee who can’t find the courage to ask his co-worker and childhood friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette) on a date. Rather than be honest with her and tell her how he actually feels, he wanders into a woo-woo crystal store and buys a One Wish Willow, a kitschy antique toy from the 1960s that promises to grant its owner one wish when they snap a branch in half. The cashier warns him that most of the customers who buy them have complained about the results, but it wouldn’t be much of a horror movie if he listened.

The Man in My Basement
'Fuze'

After dropping Nikki off at home after a night of bar trivia with their other co-workers (and weirding her out with his attempt to flirt while insisting they’re just friends), he snaps the willow and makes a simple wish: that Nikki would love him more than anything in the world. It isn’t long before she emerges from her house and asks to go home with him, and Bear thinks he just purchased a one-way ticket out of the friend zone.

Suddenly, Nikki is always horny for Bear, is eager to show public affection, and spends so much time with him that she basically moves in. For Bear, the new arrangement is great about 99 percent of the time… the only drawback is that Nikki occasionally snaps back into her old self and screams in utter terror for a few seconds, before resuming the love-bombing.

Even before the movie spirals out of control, Bear and Nikki’s mutual friends start pointing out how weird this all is. The other girls at work heard Nikki talking about how she saw Bear as a little brother mere hours before she turned into a lovestruck teenager, and it becomes clear that she’s going through something. Rumors start to fly — guesses range from drug addiction to a full mental breakdown, but somehow nobody guesses “novelty ’60s wish-granting toy with deadly consequences” — but the one thing they can all agree on is that Bear is taking advantage of a girl in a vulnerable state.

Social connections begin to dry up, party invitations get lost in the mail, and Bear soon finds himself with nobody to turn to when the new Nikki starts stabbing herself with broken glass, cooking his dead cat, and sealing his doors with duct tape to prevent him from leaving the house. All that he can do is call the customer service line on the back of the package — but when he hears that they have the soul of the real Nikki screaming for help, the hopeless romantic realizes that he bit off far more than he could chew.

“Obsession” is proof that the Cregger-ification of 2020s horror is in full effect, as its combination of sadistic violence, ironic needle drops, and comedy mined from people responding to tragedy in pathetically self-serving ways will merit plenty of comparisons to “Barbarian” and “Weapons.” It also wisely continues the recent trend of allowing forces of unexplained evil to simply exist in its world, finding its social commentary in the way humans react to things they don’t understand. Instead of turning the actual evils into metaphors.

The film‘s most compellingly unpredictable thrust lies in Barker’s choice to tell a story of something objectively horrible — in this case, a guy taking a woman’s entire soul away and turning her into a psychotic replica of herself so that he can have sex with her body and pretend they’re actually dating — exclusively from the perspective of the perpetrator. Navarrette delivers a brilliantly twisted performance as what’s left of Nikki, but given that her real self is stuck shrieking in call-center purgatory and only gets to emerge for seconds at a time, Bear is the human whose eyes we see everything through.

A sizable majority of the horror genre is built around men doing heinous things to women, with results ranging from deeply misogynistic to cathartically feminist. But “Obsession” is built around a much more contemporary male fear: being the problematic guy whose entire social circle knows he took advantage of a girl and wants nothing to do with him.

When we meet Bear, he isn’t some monster just waiting to snap. He’s a sensitive guy, frustrated by his lack of romantic success, and his heartbreak pushes him to put his own desires over his friend’s autonomy just long enough to ruin both of their lives. He doesn’t physically assault her, but he wades into a morally gray area for purely self-serving purposes, clearly haunted by the guilt of the irreversible cycle he set in motion. He also hates the fact that his friends are correct in their criticisms of him. (The fact that a movie like “Obsession” can even exist is evidence of the tiniest bit of social progress, as it would only work in a society where men feel like there are real social consequences to sexual misconduct.) Barker shows him no mercy for his actions, but leaves the door open to darker introspection. For most viewers, the terrifying question shouldn’t be “Could I end up like Nikki?” — rather, it’s, “Could I or someone I know be tempted to do what Bear did?”

That’s not to say that what happens to him is worse than what happens to her (at least at first), but Barker almost seems to be daring his audience to ask themselves how many “good guys” in the theater could be capable of a similar lapse in judgment under certain circumstances. Men and women will experience two very different types of fears when they consider the answer, but “Obsession” should keep everyone awake long after they get home from seeing it.

Grade: B+

“Obsession” premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. It is currently seeking U.S. distribution.

Superhero films show violence that is ‘almost pornographic,’ says Stephen King: ‘That’s wrong’

Bestselling author Stephen King slammed the excessive violence that are in display in the superhero films that are made in Hollywood.

Another Stephen King book, The Long Walk, is gearing up for release. Starring David Jonsson (Industry), Ben Wang (Karate Kid: Legends), Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete), and Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza), the dystopian horror thriller film has many shocks and horrors. (Also read: Sydney Sweeney refuses to comment on her controversial jeans ad as she promotes her new film at Toronto Film Festival)

Stephen King asks whether Superhero films need to show so much violence?

About the film

But the author had a condition for this adaptation, given that the film showed the violence that takes place as a totalitarian regime forces a group of young men to enter an annual walking contest in which they must maintain a speed of at least three miles per hour or risk execution. He shared that with director Francis Lawrence and screenwriter JT Mollner.

What Stephen King said

Speaking to The Times UK, Stephen explained his choice and said, “If you look at these superhero movies, you’ll see some supervillain who’s destroying whole city blocks but you never see any blood. And man, that’s wrong. It’s almost, like, pornographic… I said [for The Long Walk], if you’re not going to show it, don’t bother. And so they made a pretty brutal movie.”

Mollner added, “Even though he was writing about specific things at the time, I feel that relevance is generational and wanted to make sure we had that. The beauty, love and the story of friendship along with the brutality of hopelessness and terror. We wanted to go all the way. I knew that Stephen King wanted us to go all the way. I knew Lionsgate wanted us to go all the way. If this book got into the wrong hands, studio or filmmakers. It could’ve been neutered. So, I’m very grateful we were able to keep the teeth that the book has.”

The Long Walk is set to release in theatres on September 12.

Karan Johar Defends Bollywood’s Big-Budget Films: ‘Box Office Has No Rules’

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who is backing Teja Sajja’s upcoming film Mirai, recently defended the Bollywood industry amidst a year of underperforming big-budget productions. Speaking at a press meet for the film, he was asked if high production costs and inflated star fees were to blame, but he dismissed the notion, stressing that “every film has its own destiny.”

”All the actors have started understanding now that they have to contribute to the film’s vision,” he explained, stating that they are becoming more cooperative. He argued against placing films into a rigid box of expectations, saying, “You can’t say anything for sure.” He added that a film’s success is not guaranteed by a big vision or young actors, citing multiple examples of such films that have failed.

Karan emphasized that different eras bring different narratives, and that the audience ultimately determines a film’s success. He used two recent examples to support his point that there are no rules for the box office. He mentioned Saiyaara, a massive success starring a debutant, which earned an impressive ₹569.75 crore at the box office against a reported budget of ₹50 crore. He also highlighted the success of the animated film Mahavatar Narsimha, which grossed ₹319 crore worldwide.

Ultimately, Karan stressed that storytelling remains the cornerstone of cinema and that the audience’s verdict is what truly matters.

Directed by Karthik Gattamneni and Anil Anand, Mirai stars Teja Sajja, Shriya Saran, and Jayaram and is scheduled for release on September 12. Karan Johar’s other upcoming production, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, directed by Shashank Khaitan and starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, is slated for release on October 2.

EXCLUSIVE: Dark Sky Films is teaming up with sister company Watermelon Pictures on the acquisition of North American distribution rights to Mārama, the gothic horror feature from Māori writer-director Taratoa Stappard (Taumanu).

Set in Victorian England, 1859, Mārama is the story of a young Māori woman’s fight to reclaim her identity and indigenous culture. When she is mysteriously summoned from New Zealand to North Yorkshire, she uncovers her horrific colonial heritage and is compelled to confront and destroy the titled Englishman who devastated her family.

The film will have its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival on September 7th as part of the festival’s Discovery Programme.

The movie features Māori actor Ariāna Osborne (Madam) in the lead role alongside British actors Toby Stephens (Black Sails) and Umi Myers (Bob Marley: One Love), as well as New Zealanders Erroll Shand (Savage) and Jordan Mooney (The Bluff).

The acquisition agreement, which encompasses all North American distribution rights, was negotiated by the Dark Sky Films acquisition team and producers Sharlene George and Rouzie Hassanova. The former is a veteran genre presence while newcomer Watermelon is known for releasing From Ground Zero and working on The Voice Of Hind Rajab.

The film will be released in North American theaters in the first quarter of 2026. International sales at TIFF are being handled by Franziska McCray. Dark Sky and Watermelon are both owned by MPI Media Group.

Pic is produced by Sharlene George (Taumanu), CEO and Founding Partner of international production company The Sweetshop.  The film’s other producers are Rickylee Russell-Waipuka (Taumanu), Rouzie Hassanova (Radiogram) with Paraone Gloyne as Pou Tiaki Reo & Tikanga (Māori Language & Culture Producer).  Executive producers include Victoria Dabbs, Gal Greenspan for Sweetshop Entertainment, Jill Macnab and Phil Bremner for Vendetta Films.

The film was developed with support from Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga/The New Zealand Film Commission, imagineNATIVE, The Black List, Toronto I.F.F., Zurich I.F.F., and the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

Badie Ali, co-CEO of Dark Sky Films and Watermelon Pictures commented: “Taratoa Stappard has crafted a visually stunning, emotionally resonant film that redefines what gothic horror can be. We’re proud to champion Indigenous storytelling and bring this powerful, culturally rooted work to North American audiences.”

“Mārama is an Indigenous-led production in every sense,” added producer Sharlene George. “It’s a film that not only challenges conventions, but also puts Indigenous voices and worldviews at the heart of its storytelling.”

Writer-director Taratoa Stappard said: “Mārama is the first of my planned trilogy of Māori gothic horror stories about colonising violence being met with Indigenous retribution. I can’t wait to share my film with the world.”

Stephen King criticises the “pornographic” violence in superhero films

by jummy84 September 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Stephen King has criticised the depiction of violence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, describing it as “pornographic”.

The writer, who is most adapted living author in cinematic history, was speaking about the extent of the violence in the new film The Long Walk, which is based on his 1979 novel of the same name.

He told The Times that he insisted to screenwriter JT Mollner (Strange Darling) and director Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games) that the young characters in the film, who enter a walking contest in which all but the winner will be executed, must be shown being brutally killed.

“If you look at these superhero movies, you’ll see…some supervillain who’s destroying whole city blocks but you never see any blood,” he explained. “And man, that’s wrong. It’s almost, like, pornographic.”

“I said, if you’re not going to show it [in The Long Walk], don’t bother. And so they made a pretty brutal movie.”

Set in a dystopian United States, the film depicts 100 young men entering an annual walking contest in which they must maintain a speed of at least three miles per hour or they will be killed. The winner is the last remaining walker.

It stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson and Charlie Plummer and is released in cinemas on September 12.

It is one of four major King adaptations to be released on the big screen in 2025: The Life Of Chuck, with Tom Hiddleston and Chiwetel Ejiofor, is out now, Osgood Perkins’ horror The Monkey was a hit in the Spring, while Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man is coming on November 7.

This is not the first time that King has spoken about the MCU – in 2023, he criticised people that were piling in on the miserable box office performance of The Marvels, calling it “adolescent fanboy hate”.

“I don’t go to MCU movies, don’t care for them, but I find this barely masked gloating over the low box office for THE MARVELS very unpleasant,” he wrote. “Why gloat over failure?”

Last month, he spoke about his wishes for the end of the Trump presidency. “I think it would be impeachment – which, in my view, would be a good ending. I would love to see him retired, let’s put it that way. The bad ending would be that he gets a third term and takes things over completely. It’s a horror story either way. Trump is a horror story, isn’t he?”

A House of Dynamite review: One of Kathryn Bigelow’s very best films

by jummy84 September 2, 2025
written by jummy84

As the opening caption reminds us, after the Cold War, political agreements looked to dismantle the nuclear arms race, but “that era is now over”. As we all know, countries including the US, Russia, China, North Korea and India all have nuclear arsenals. The question is, is anyone ready to push the button?

In Bigelow’s film, scripted by Noah Oppenheim, an unidentified enemy launches an unprovoked single missile strike against America.

“Is this real?” asks one character, as the realisation dawns that this is not a drill. Events are initially played out largely in the White House Situation Room, as Rebecca Ferguson’s Captain Olivia Walker attempts to handle the situation, whilst also coping with the fact her husband and young son are at home, and, like millions of others, in grave danger.

GBIs – Ground Based Interceptors – are launched, but as one character notes, knocking a nuclear missile from the sky is like “hitting a bullet with a bullet”.

Kyle Allen as Captain Jon Zimmer in A House of Dynamite. Eros Hoagland/Netflix

Keeping it tight, the storyline covers about a third of the film’s running time, before Bigelow then switches locations, repeating events from other perspectives, including the Secretary of Defence (Jared Harris) and the President of the United States (Idris Elba), who is making a visit to a sporting arena, greeting young basketball players (he enters to rapturous cheers and the sound of Phil Collins’s drum-heavy anthem In the Air Tonight).

Bigelow has been here before, more or less. Her rather ponderous 2002 film K-19: The Widowmaker dealt with an impending nuclear submarine disaster. But A House of Dynamite is far more urgent, far more, well, explosive.

Of course, the film draws comparisons with the likes of Fail Safe and even Stanley Kubrick’s satire Dr Strangelove, but Bigelow’s relentless pacing and contemporary setting makes it feel utterly of the moment.

With a shrewdly-chosen cast, this is an ensemble to savour, including Jason Clarke, who featured in Bigelow’s hunt for Bin Laden tale Zero Dark Thirty, and Past Lives’ Greta Lee (as an expert in North Korean intelligence).

But this is not a film with a grandstanding singular performance (although Tracy Letts’s hard-hitting general comes close to stealing it). Rather, it’s a group of actors harnessing a collective energy to bring to life a terrifying story.

Giving you a unique fly-on-the-wall look at decisions that ultimately rest with the President, as he must consider whether to retaliate and usher in World War III or risk further strikes on American soil, it shows with clarity just how little time there is when it comes to deciding mankind’s fate.

“Surrender or suicide,” as the President is told, when he’s confronted with the “nuclear decision handbook”, which outlines three response strategies – “rare, medium and well-done”, as one operative says in a rare moment of black humour.

Although much of A House of Dynamite takes place in claustrophobic interiors – a world of big-screen monitors, desks, and half-drunk coffee cups – there are expansive moments that hit home, like the shot of buses pulling into Raven Rock in Pennsylvania, an underground facility for sheltering during a nuclear attack.

For sure, Bigelow has crafted a film that works both as nerve-shredding entertainment and as a thought-provoking anti-nuclear statement.

A House Of Dynamite is released in cinemas on 10th October 2025 and on Netflix on 24th October 2025.

Sivakarthikeyan says his wife Aarthy agreed to marry him before he made any money, became successful in films

written by jummy84

Tamil actor Sivakarthikeyan spoke about his wife Aarthy at a promotional event in Hyderabad for his upcoming film, Madharaasi, directed by AR Murugadoss. When asked if he had people in his life who supported him before he was successful, the actor got candid about his college friends and his wife standing by him through it all.

Sivakarthikeyan credited his wife Aarthy for sticking by him even before he had any money or was successful.

Sivakarthikeryan is grateful for his wife Aarthy

Sivakarthikeyan spoke about how his college friends were the first ones to notice he was talented and encouraged him to perform on stage. He said, “My college friends encouraged me to do mimicry and take the stage, saying that I’ll do really well.”

He then stated that Aarthy said yes to marrying him before he even became an actor, stating he’ll always be grateful to her. “And my wife Aarthy, she married me even before I came into cinema. In cinema, people will always find talent to showcase because it’s a business. But without expecting anything, I didn’t even have a proper salary, she said okay to me and thought I could take care of her. I should always be grateful to Aarthy,” said Sivakarthikeyan.

Sivakarthikeyan and Aarthy married in 2010 and have three children.

Sivakarthikeyan’s career

For the unversed, Sivakarthikeyan would perform mimicry and stand-up comedy on stage when he was still in college. In 2006, he took a three-month break from studies to be part of the comedy reality TV show, Kalakka Povathu Yaaru, winning the second season. While the 2008 Ajith Kumar-starrer Aegan was supposed to be his film debut, his portions were cut out.

His debut was in 2012 with the film Marina, and he also played a supporting role in the Dhanush-starrer 3 the same year. His life turned around in 2013 with the box office successes of Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga and Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam. In 2018, Sivakarthikeyan also ventured into film production with Kanaa. Years later, his career changed again when the 2021 and 2022 films Doctor and Don collected over ₹100 crore at the box office.

Sivakarthikeyan was last seen in the 2024 biographical film Amaran, in which he played Major Mukund Varadarajan. The film collected over ₹300 crore worldwide and is his most successful film to date. Apart from Madharaasi, which will be released on 5 September, Sivakarthikeyan will also star in Sudha Kongara’s Parasakthi, which will be his 25th film.

Abbott Elementary Films Episode During Phillies Game

by jummy84 August 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson and her sitcom cast were on hand at a Philadelphia Phillies game on Thursday night to shoot a season five bottle episode during the live event.

Their presence at Citizens Bank Park was marked on the Instagram page for the Philadelphia Phillies mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. A bottle episode is usually done to save on production costs. But Brunson, who comes from west Philadelphia and plays Janine Teagues on the ABC workplace sitcom, first teased a live event filming for the series in July at San Diego Comic Con.

“You can expect us to be filming at a live event,” a coy Brunson hinted at the time, before adding, “but I do think that Philly sports fans will be very happy.” Then Thursday night, with the Phillies playing the Atlanta Braves, Brunson and her fellow West Philly Abbot Elementary teachers were on hand, in the stands and on the field for a group photo, to shoot the anticipated episode.

Brunson, a two-time Emmy winner, wore a Phillies jersey as the single-camera comedy about a small group of teachers at a chronically underfunded public school left a studio audience behind to film at the sporting event. The bottle episode shoot had the blessing of MLB Studios, Major League Baseball’s in-house studio.

“As big fans of the series, MLB Studios initiated outreach to Warner Bros. and subsequently the Phillies to get the shooting process started. Collaboration between MLB Studios, the Phillies and the show commenced to shoot a bottle episode on-location at a Phillies game, with a goal of ensuring authenticity and access to the field,” a statement from MLB Studios obtained by The Hollywood Reporter says.

Abbott Elementary, for which Brunson also serves as creator and executive producer, wrapped up its fourth season by nabbing six Emmy nominations, including best comedy and best writing for a comedy series, which Brunson won for the series’ pilot episode in 2022.
