Screenwriter says Kerala State Film Awards jury owes women apology over Best Lyricist to alleged abuser Vedan

The Kerala State Film Awards were announced on Monday evening. There has been backlash since then, including from Deedi Damodaran.

Filmmaker-screenwriter and founding member of Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), Deedi Damodaran took to her Facebook account on Wednesday to slam the jury of the Kerala State Film Awards. She called them out for giving the Best Lyricist award to Hirandas Murali, better known as rapper Vedan, who was accused in a rape case earlier this year. She also stated that the jury owed the women of Kerala an apology. (Also Read: Child actor Deva Nandha slams Prakash Raj after he snubs children’s categories at Kerala State Film Awards)

Vedan received bail from the court after a case was filed against him in July this year for the alleged rape of a doctor.

Deedi Damodaran slams state awards jury over platforming Vedan

Vedan was given the Best Lyricist award for penning the lyrics of the song Kuthanthram from the 2024 hit Manjummel Boys. The winners of this year’s awards were decided by a jury headed by Prakash Raj. In her Facebook post, Deedi stated that the lines by Vedan, “viyarppu thunnititta kuppayam” (the shirt stitched with sweat), were “magnificent”, but the award was“stained by blood” from the wounds of the victims. She also wrote that no song can erase or conceal that.

Deedi further wrote, “The jury’s decision amounts to a breach of trust against the government’s policy declarations at the recent film conclave that those who exploit women will not be protected,” adding, “Even if this decision cannot be reversed through legal means, the film jury owes an apology to the women of Kerala for etching such a verdict into the history of cinema.” The screenwriter made her post after Vedan celebrated his win on Instagram by writing the exact lyrics she pointed out.

Sexual assault allegations against Vedan

In 2021, Vedan was accused of alleged sexual misconduct during the MeToo movement. However, no formal complaints were filed. In July this year, a rape case was filed against Vedan at the Thrikkakara police station in Kochi, Kerala. A young doctor accused the musician of sexually assaulting her multiple times between August 2021 and March 2023 under the guise of marriage after they met via social media.

In August, the Kerala High Court granted him anticipatory bail in the case, stating that “labelling physical intimacy as rape after a relationship ceased to exist is illogical and harsh.” He was arrested on record in September and released on bail. In August, a music researcher had also filed a sexual harassment complaint against Vedan, and the Ernakulam Central police registered a case against him. A chargesheet was filed against him in October. In November, the HC amended a previous condition imposed on him, allowing him to travel abroad for work.

Haq Movie Review: Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi Excel in This Compelling Film

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

The real case that inspired Haq stems from the landmark Shah Bano judgment of 1985, a legal earthquake that redefined how India understood women’s rights, secular law and religious identity. When a divorced Muslim woman sought maintenance under Section 125 of the CrPC, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution’s promise of equality was not contingent upon personal law. This ruling forced India to confront a hard question, whether justice could be selectively interpreted based on religion, and whether a Muslim woman was entitled to the same dignity, respect and protection as any other woman in this country. Haq, based on Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat Ki Beti, reinterprets that battle for contemporary India, where these same arguments still quietly simmer under political speech, domestic space, and cultural caution.

In the film, Yami Gautam Dhar plays Shazia Bano, the fictionalised Shah Bano figure, and her performance is the spine of Haq. She plays Shazia not as a symbol, but as a woman who has lived, loved, hurt, doubted, questioned, and yet stands to fight. There is restraint here, but also ferocity, an emotional fluency that never slips into artifice. Her courtroom scenes have a rare clarity. She fights not with chest-thumping melodrama but with lived conviction. The shifting weight in her shoulders, the hesitations in her voice, the quiet with which she absorbs pain, all of that adds a truthful fragility beneath her courage. It is easily one of Yami’s strongest, most commanding screen turns.

Also Read: Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi’s Most Hard-hitting Dialogues From HAQ
Emraan Hashmi, as Abbas Khan, is equally compelling, playing a man shaped by privilege, belief and inherited power structures. He is not painted as a cardboard bigot; he is someone who has never questioned the script handed to him, and that is what makes his downfall tragic instead of theatrical. The more he clings to his ego, the more the system crumbles beneath him. Vartika Singh, as the second wife, leaves a striking impact. She is not reduced to glamour; her arc is empathetic, sensitive, and beautifully textured. Her confrontation moment opposite Yami is one of the film’s most emotionally loaded scenes. And Sheeba Chaddha, as the supporting lawyer on Yami’s side, injects gravity, wit and an unwavering steadiness; she knows exactly how to play strength in silence. Danish Hussain too makes an impact as Yami’s supportive father.

Much of this impact works because the writing is sharp, intelligent and deeply internalised. Reshu Nath’s screenplay understands the emotional minefield of faith versus constitutional rights without turning the narrative into an academic lecture. She builds conflict through spaces of doubt, lived contradiction and internal bias, not just external provocation. And Suparn S Varma’s direction keeps the storytelling grounded and balanced. He refuses sensationalism, he resists easy villainy, and he allows silences to speak. His directorial hand ensures Haq is not a polemic, it is a lived human drama.

While a more non-linear structure could have given the story even greater depth, what Haq achieves is still powerful, it centres the Indian woman’s agency over her life and her choices, irrespective of religious identity. It reminds men that responsibility cannot be abandoned through doctrine. It highlights how law must protect the vulnerable without fear. Haq calls for empathy not uproar.

Haq is a reminder that clarity, reason and moral courage can indeed be cinematic. Watch it for its sincerity, for its grace, for its argument but above all, watch it for the performances that give this battle a beating, breathing human heart. And watch it because it believes that the Indian woman, regardless of faith, deserves the Constitution as her shield, not the mercy of men.

Tom Blyth Stars in ‘High Finance’ Thriller Film ‘Bull Run’ Official Trailer

“I was thinking we could do some number-crunching tonight – if you’re free.” Vertical has revealed their official trailer for a financial thriller film called Bull Run, made by filmmaker Alfredo Barrios Jr. as his feature directorial debut. It premiered at a film festival last year and will be out to watch on VOD later this month. In banking terms, a “bull run” is a period of sustained upward price movement in a market, such as stocks or cryptocurrencies, driven by investor confidence and optimism. The film follows a young former hockey player turned “high finance” banker working in NYC. In the wilds of Wall Street, one junior banker discovers that the only thing more dangerous than billion-dollar deals are the men signing them. Starring Tom Blyth with Chris Diamantopoulos, Jay Mohr, Zach Villa, Jordyn Denning, Ashwin Gore, Helena Mattson, Trevor Gretzky, Troy Garity, Sam Daly, and Alyshia Ochse. This film looks okay, but I’d rather recommend the excellent Fair Play film instead, also set in the cut-throat Wall Street offices.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Alfredo Barrios Jr.’s film Bull Run, direct from Vertical’s YouTube:

Bull Run Poster

“Greed has its limits.” Bobby Sanders (Tom Blyth), a hustling, fast-talking ex-pro-hockey-player-turned-junior-banker, navigates the quirky and somewhat surreal world of high finance as he confronts life’s meaning within his gilded cage. Bull Run is directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Alfredo Barrios Jr., making his feature film directorial debut after working on some TV series and a few short films previously. The screenplay is written by Alfredo Barrios Jr and Bill Keenan. Produced by Bill Keenan, Doug Ellin, Karen Baldwin, Howard Baldwin, Andrew Sugerman, Bill Immerman. This first premiered at the 2024 Newport Beach Film Festival last year but didn’t show up anywhere else. Vertical will release Barrios Jr’s Bull Run movie in select US theaters + on VOD starting November 14th, 2025 this fall. Anyone interested in this?

Border 2 is among the most awaited sequels of Indian cinema, and now it will hit the silver screens on January 23, 2026, during the Republic Day week. The movie has been in the news ever since it was announced- promising to be a stirring patriotic drama and a sequel to J.P. Dutta’s iconic 1997 classic titled Border.

On Wednesday, the makers shared a first look of Varun Dhawan, who steps into the uniform of a brave Indian soldier for this high-octane war drama. In the striking poster, Varun is in full gear, oozing intensity and pride. The image instantly sent social media abuzz, with his fans hailing the transformation and patriotic aura of the actor.

Sharing a powerful first look on social media handles, the makers write, “Border uska farz hai aur Bharat uska pyaar! #Border2 releasing on 23rd January, 2026.” The tagline translates to “The border is his duty, and India is his love,” aptly giving away the essence of the film-a perfect combination of emotion, sacrifice, and valour.
While more details pertaining to the cast and storyline are kept under wraps, the sequel is expected to pay tribute to the courage and selflessness of India’s armed forces with a modern cinematic touch. Border 2 is all set to revive the spirit of patriotism and brotherhood which made the original film a landmark in Indian cinema.

The film stars Varun Dhawan in the lead and is touted as one of the most ambitious projects of the actor. According to fans and trade experts, Border 2 could emerge as one of 2026’s biggest patriotic blockbusters as it celebrates the valour of soldiers guarding the nation’s frontlines.

Stunning Trailer for ‘The Tale of Silyan’ Doc Film from North Macedonia

“You poor bird. From today on, we will live together.” National Geographic has unveiled the official trailer for one of the best documentaries of 2025 – a film titled The Tale of Silyan, from acclaimed Macedonian filmmaker Tamara Kotevska, best know for her doc Honeyland from 2019. She filmed a farmer for years in a town in North Macedonia following him and his friendship with one of the local white storks. The story follows Nikola, who is unable to sell his land & crops. His family abandons him to look for a future abroad. Nikola gets a job at a landfill, where he comes across an injured white stork, Sylian. Nikola saves the bird, with the two forming a bond. Through folklore, striking images and intimate observation, Kotevska crafts a story about absence and resilience, and about the delicate thread that ties human survival to the natural world. It’s a beautiful, stunning, amazing film about our connection with nature. My rave review from the Venice Film Festival is quoted in it: “a spectacularly cinematic creation it’s almost completely unbelievable that it’s actually a documentary and these are all real people and this is a real story.” A must watch new doc.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Tamara Kotevska’s doc The Tale of Silyan, direct from YouTube:

The Tale of Silyan Doc Trailer

The Tale of Silyan Doc Poster

Via AFI Fest: “Documentarian Tamara Kotevska returns with a poetic & lyrical documentary set in rural Macedonia where family farms are struggling as their traditional way of life has become unsustainable. Looking down on this are the town’s majestic storks perched in enormous nests atop telephone poles while their clattering beaks provide a constant soundtrack. Rooted in the Macedonian myth of Silyan — a boy transformed into a stork after defying his father — [drawing] a parallel to its subject, Nikola, a weathered farmer left behind when his adult son and family depart for Germany in search of a more secure future. When Nikola encounters an injured stork and tends to the fragile bird, a tender bond forms — one that reflects both his yearning for companionship and the looming uncertainty of his vanishing way of life.” 🇲🇰

The Tale of Silyan is directed by acclaimed, Oscar-nominated Macedonian filmmaker Tamara Kotevska, director of the doc films Honeyland and The Walk previously, and a few other short films as well. Produced by Tamara Kotevska, Jean Dakar, Anna Hashmi, Jordanco Petkovski. This premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival this fall (read our review). National Geographic will debut Kotevska’s The Tale of Silyan doc in select US theaters starting on November 28th, 2025 coming soon this fall. Who wants to watch this doc?
