Oncologist debunks 5 myths about childhood cancer: Is it always fatal?

by jummy84 September 15, 2025

Childhood cancer is shrouded in myths and misconceptions, which delay diagnosis and treatment. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Ramana Gogi, principal consultant – medical oncology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, said, “The myths surrounding childhood cancer can create unnecessary fear or, worse, delay timely diagnosis and treatment. Doctors emphasise that informed awareness is the first step toward better outcomes.” Also read | Doctor breaks down the real cause of cancer in children: 4 things every parent should know

Myths surrounding childhood cancer can create unnecessary fear .

Dr Ramana Gogi further busted several myths:

Myth 1: Childhood cancer is extremely rare, so it can’t happen to my child

Fact: While childhood cancers are less common than adult cancers, they are not as rare as many believe. In fact, cancer is one of the leading causes of disease-related deaths in children. Knowing this doesn’t mean parents should panic, but it underscores the importance of paying attention to persistent, unusual symptoms.

Myth 2: Childhood cancers are caused by lifestyle choices

Fact: Unlike many adult cancers, childhood cancers are rarely linked to diet, environment, or habits. Most cases occur due to genetic changes or factors beyond anyone’s control. This means parents should not blame themselves; nothing in routine parenting causes cancer.

Myth 3: Symptoms are obvious and easy to spot

Fact: Many childhood cancers mimic common illnesses. Fatigue, fevers, bone pain, or bruising are often brushed off as infections, growth pains, or clumsiness. The reality is that symptoms can be subtle, which is why persistent, or unusual patterns need medical evaluation. Myth 4: Cancer in children is always fatal

Fact: This is one of the most damaging misconceptions. With advances in treatment, survival rates for many childhood cancers have improved dramatically. For some types, survival exceeds 80 percent. Early detection and specialised pediatric oncology care make a significant difference.

Myth 5: Treatment for childhood cancer is the same as for adults

Fact: Children are not small adults. Their bodies, metabolism, and long-term needs are different. Pediatric oncology teams tailor therapies to minimise side effects while maximising cure rates. In many cases, children tolerate treatments better than adults.

“Childhood cancer is frightening, but knowledge empowers families. Dispelling myths helps parents focus on what truly matters: recognising persistent warning signs, seeking timely care, and trusting that today’s treatments offer children not just survival, but the chance for a healthy future,” the oncologist added. Two Democratic lawmakers Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman were shot overnight in separate locations in June 2025. Hortman died as a result, but Hoffman survived and called for action to combat the ongoing violence in the United States.

Read on to learn what happened to Hortman and Hoffman.

Who Is Melissa Hortman?

Hortman, 55, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. She represented District 34B in Minnesota and was a member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL).

Apart from her political career, Hortman was a mother of two children and was married to her husband, Mark Hortman. She and her husband died after being shot in June 2025.

Who Is John Hoffman?

Hoffman is a 60-year-old member of the Minnesota Senate. Like Hortman, Hoffman is a part of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), and he represents District 34.

Hoffman survived the shooting. He returned to speak at the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting in Minneapolis to address the harrowing incident.

“I’m still slowly recovering from my gunshot wounds — nine of them,” Hoffman explained. “If you want to see the pattern on my body, it’s the same pattern that’s in my red door that I no longer have, although I do still have a long way to go.”

Hoffman added, “We must call Americans to action in ways that don’t incite intimidation and political violence, right? Having our own homes violated by pure evil cannot be the new normal, right? … I believe all Americans and Minnesotans want to talk to each other again without being demeaned and without the threat of violence.”

Hortman & Hoffman Shooting Details

Hortman and Hoffman were shot in separate locations in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, in what appears to be a related incident, per Fox 9. Their respective spouses were shot as well, according to multiple outlets.

Details On Lawsuit Filed By Angie Stone’s Children

Page Six reports that Angie Stone’s children, Diamond Stone and Michael D’Angelo Archer, filed a lawsuit on September 2 in Atlanta. The suit states that Angie originally survived the first crash when her Sprinter van was carrying her and her crew, but flipped over. While trying to escape, Angie was struck by an 18-wheeler, ejected, and trapped underneath, where she later died. The court docs also claim that the truck driver was distracted, the safety system failed, and he didn’t break before hitting the van at 70 mph.

Angie Family Speaks Out After The Fatal Crash

Days after Angie tragically passed away on March 1, her family issued a statement about her death.  Per 11Alive, her loved ones thanked everyone for their support.“It is with heavy hearts that the children of the R&B Singer Angie Stone along with her extended family want to thank you all for your love and well wishes at what is an extremely difficult time.” The statement also highlighted that Angie stood a strong example for Black women and girls and also championed Black men.

“Angie was an example for Black women and girls everywhere. Angie also loved and championed for Black Men with her number one hit entitled ‘Brotha.’ Angie Stone believed in giving back to her fans and the community with her Foundation, ‘Angel Stripes, the Angie Stone Foundation.’ She lived and died doing what she loved most, which was music,” the statement read.

According to AP News, the Alabama Highway Patrol said the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van carrying Angie and her team overturned on Interstate 65 and then collided with a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia truck. Emergency responders pronounced Stone dead at the scene and later rushed the Sprinter’s driver and seven other passengers to a hospital.

Matthew Perry death: ‘Ketamine Queen’ to plead guilty to selling fatal dose – National

by jummy84 August 20, 2025

A woman known as the “Ketamine Queen,” charged with selling Matthew Perry the drug that killed him, agreed to plead guilty Monday.

Jasveen Sangha becomes the fifth and final defendant charged in the overdose death of the Friends star to strike a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. Having initially pleaded not guilty, her change of plea means she’ll avoid a trial that had been planned for August.

Prosecutors had cast Sangha as a prolific drug dealer who was known to her customers as the “Ketamine Queen,” using the term often in press releases and court documents and even including it in the official name of the case.

A federal indictment charged Sangha with one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine, one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, one count of possession with intent to distribute ketamine and five counts of distribution of ketamine.

Sangha will officially change her plea to guilty at an upcoming hearing, where sentencing will be scheduled, prosecutors said. She could get up to 45 years in prison. An email sent to Sangha’s lawyers seeking comment was not immediately answered.

She and Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who signed his own plea deal June 16, had been the primary targets of the investigation. Three other defendants — Dr. Mark Chavez, Kenneth Iwamasa and Erik Fleming — agreed to plead guilty last year in exchange for their cooperation, which included statements implicating Sangha and Plasencia.

Perry was found dead in his Los Angeles home by Iwamasa, his assistant, on Oct. 28, 2023. The medical examiner ruled that ketamine, typically used as a surgical anesthetic, was the primary cause of death.

The actor had been using the drug through his regular doctor as a legal, but off-label, treatment for depression, which has become increasingly common. Perry, 54, sought more ketamine than his doctor would give him. He began getting it from Plasencia about a month before his death, then started getting still more from Sangha about two weeks before his death, prosecutors said.

Perry and Iwamasa found Sangha through Perry’s friend Fleming. In their plea agreements, both men described the subsequent deals in detail.

Fleming messaged Iwamasa saying Sangha’s ketamine was “unmarked but it’s amazing,” according to court documents. Fleming texted Iwamasa that she only deals “with high end and celebs. If it were not great stuff she’d lose her business.”

With the two men acting as middlemen, Perry bought large amounts of ketamine from Sangha, including 25 vials for $6,000 in cash four days before his death. That purchase included the doses that killed Perry, prosecutors said.

On the day of Perry’s death, Sangha told Fleming they should delete all the messages they had sent each other, according to her indictment.

Her home in North Hollywood, California, was raided in March 2024 by Drug Enforcement Administration agents who found large amounts of methamphetamines and ketamine, according to an affidavit from an agent. She was indicted that June, arrested that August and has been held in jail since.

None of the defendants have yet been sentenced.

Perry struggled with addiction for years, dating back to his time on Friends, when he became one of the biggest stars of his generation as Chandler Bing. He starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004 on NBC’s mega-hit series.
