An Engaging and Potentially Profitable Form of Modern Entertainment – Hollywood Life

Mobile games, whether puzzles, social casino games, or another format, have become a dominant force in the entertainment industry. Mobile gaming made up 49% of the video games market in 2024, followed by 28% for console games and 23% for PC games; generating about $92 billion in revenue, mobile games alone were more profitable than the music and film industries combined.

The popularity of mobile gaming is as undeniable as its profitability, and the industry’s rise to the top of the entertainment market provides insight into what users expect from innovation and engagement moving forward. As a whole, the mobile gaming industry shows how technical advancements, changing user behavior, and a shift toward social and accessible entertainment can have an impact on the market.

Insight Into the Rise of Mobile Gaming

As it stands, the global mobile gaming market is positioned to reach or surpass $126 billion by the end of this year. By 2030, the market could exceed $164 billion and include upwards of two and a half billion users. While the majority of revenue is expected to be generated in the United States, mobile gaming is a phenomenon in China and the majority of the world with no clear equal in the entertainment industry.

The emergence of casual and social games on mobile devices has significantly contributed toward this industry trend. This is especially the case for social casino games and apps with similar technology, which leverage the potential of gambling mechanics to create engaging gameplay without necessarily including monetary elements. Ultimately, user retention is a critical aspect of mobile gaming’s success.

“With the increasing cost of attracting new players,” an article read, “developers must find more efficient ways to engage and retain users. The challenge extends beyond just getting users to download the game; it also involves keeping them actively engaged, invested, and making purchases over time.”

Innovation Contributes to Improvement in Engagement

The past few years have seen significant innovation within and surrounding the mobile gaming industry. In addition to this, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology are contributing toward user experiences as well as industry optimization. Some of the most notable developments in mobile gaming include the introduction of 5G capabilities, improved graphics processors in most leading devices, as well as cloud gaming solutions.

Outside of mobile platforms, the integration of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices has created new possibilities in the mobile gaming industry. Players who have been able to secure AR or VR goggles have also been introduced to new methods of interacting with mobile content and the digital environment. Certainly, innovation and affordability in this space could contribute toward industry change.

AI technology has found its way into numerous global industries, and mobile gaming is no exception to the trend. Developers are actively integrating AI into their own processes and their final products. One of the most compelling applications of AI is that the technology may be able to personalize a game experience, thereby optimizing retention and contributing toward a game’s profitability.

The Social Element of Mobile Gaming

From leaderboards to multiplayer, community events to rewards systems, games that integrate some form of social interaction tend to find more success than the alternative. After all, games have become a new way for individuals to maintain social connections outside of in-person engagement. If a game doubles as a social platform and benefits from the accessibility of a mobile device, it is likely to stick.

“When people with a shared interest can come together in a multiplayer game, there is potential for positive, prosocial interaction among them both in the game and outside of it,” a paper stated.

Free-to-Play Monetization Strategy

The majority of contemporary mobile games attempt to include some form of multiplayer element, as well as a free-to-play model. This creates a high level of accessibility for players, while offering optional in-app purchases to acquire digital assets or more fully enjoy the game. Additionally, advertisements and battle passes create opportunities for revenue generation without disrupting gameplay.

The Future of Mobile Gaming

As mobile games expand their market dominance, the future of the industry has significant potential. Mobile-first game design prioritizes accessibility for the majority of players, while short sessions and intuitive user interfaces attempt to optimize the user experience. Additionally, innovations in cross-platform play empower mobile gamers to enjoy console and PC-restricted titles. Certainly, the mobile games industry is positioned for continued growth.

TAICCA & Taiwan’s Mirror Fiction Invest $10M In Mirror Entertainment

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Taiwanese IP development company Mirror Fiction Inc has launched a film and TV production company, Mirror Entertainment, with a $10M (NTD310M) co-investment with Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA).

The Taipei-based outfit is developing ten films and TV series projects over the next five years, several of which will be produced with international partners.

Eight projects were announced at a launch event at Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF) today, including three inspired by true events or global issues: Godless, adapted from a true story about a female serial killer in Taiwan; Until The Next Appointment, a Switzerland-set comedy about the impact of internet usage on children; and thriller Diamonds And Bread, about a diamond theft linked to an international conspiracy.

Mirror Entertainment will be headed by chairperson Tung Cheng-yu, who is also the CEO of Mirror Fiction. Tung is an established figure in Taiwan’s IP development field with experience across journalism, publishing and film production. She also co-scripted Tsai Ming-liang’s 2013 drama Stray Dogs, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Venice Film Festival, and executive produced award-winning drama series Port Of Lies.

Other members of Mirror Entertainment’s management team include General Manager Lo Chun-Han; Lily Chen and Patrick Jia, Content Development & Production Department Directors, who will act as producers on Mirror Entertainment projects; and Glenis Tsai, International Business Development Director, who will connect the company’s projects with domestic and international markets.

Mirror Fiction has also brought on board Ruen Tai Shing Co and Field Stone Investment Holding as co-investors in the new venture alongside TAICCA. The TAICCA investment is sourced from Taiwan’s National Development Fund, which has previously invested in local film and TV companies including Mandarin Vision, Damou Entertainment and Screenworks Asia.

Mirror Fiction is an IP incubation platform which has previously invested in films including A Sun and The Falls, both of which were selected as Taiwan’s submission to the Best International Film category of the Oscars; as well as box office horror hit The Rope Curse 3. The company also produced Port Of Lies, a series about a lawyer defending a migrant worker accused of murder, which won seven prizes at Taiwan’s Golden Bell Awards, as well as Freddy Tang’s feature film April, which recently screened at Tokyo International Film Festival.

Other projects announced at the launch event today include Gangster Priest, a black comedy about a gangster who has trouble leaving behind his life of crime; and horror film Hopscotch, which explores how family trauma is replicated through new generations.

Mirror Fiction also plans to adapt its own properties including hit internet novel The Cleaning Guide For Murderers; and Promise To Bring You Home, a story about baseball in Taiwan’s indigenous communities, which picked up the Glory IP award today at TCCF Pitching.

What 185,000 Events Have Taught Me About the Power of Entertainment

by jummy84 October 22, 2025
written by jummy84

By David Bevan, Founder and Director of Alive Network Entertainment Agency

When I founded Alive Network back in 1999, live entertainment at events was often seen as an afterthought — something to book once the venue, catering, and logistics were in place. Over two decades later, having supplied performers to 185,000+ events ranging from weddings and private parties to corporate celebrations for brands like BBC, Google, Microsoft, and Bentley, I can say with certainty: entertainment is not an optional extra. It’s the glue that holds an event together, the spark that transforms logistics into experiences.

Entertainment is the Emotional Anchor

Events are about people. While venues and catering provide structure, it’s the entertainment that creates emotional connection.

  • A live band can turn a corporate dinner into a celebration.
  • A magician or caricaturist can break the ice at a networking event.
  • A DJ or saxophonist can lift energy from polite conversation to unforgettable dancefloor moments.

Sometimes all it takes is the energy of a live rock and pop band to shift a room from polite conversation into a full-scale celebration. When audiences remember an event years later, it’s rarely the menu they recall — it’s the feeling created by entertainment.

The Business Case for Entertainment

It’s not just about fun; there’s a clear ROI for organisations investing in live performance:

  • Engagement: Staff and guests are more receptive when they’re relaxed and entertained.
  • Branding: The entertainment chosen reflects the host organisation’s values and creativity.
  • Memorability: Attendees are far more likely to share, post, and talk about events that had a unique entertainment element.

From networking mixers to large-scale conferences, choosing the right corporate entertainment can transform a formal agenda into a memorable shared experience. Over the years, I’ve seen entertainment elevate events into PR moments in their own right — generating social content, boosting brand affinity, and even securing repeat attendance.

What 185,000 Events Have Taught Me

  1. Fit is everything – The right act for one audience may miss the mark for another. Tailoring entertainment to audience demographics and event objectives is key. For inspiration, we’ve curated our Top 50 corporate event bands — proven acts that deliver energy and engagement across different audiences.
  2. Diversity matters – From string quartets to street performers, variety not only delights but also makes events more inclusive.
  3. Quality is non-negotiable – Professional performers elevate the entire event; one weak act can undo months of planning.
  4. Entertainment is logistics too – Booking the right act isn’t just about talent, but about reliability, timing, and seamless integration with the wider event schedule.
  5. Adaptability wins – Over 25 years we’ve seen everything, from last-minute weather changes at outdoor weddings to CEOs unexpectedly joining bands on stage. The best entertainment can pivot and still deliver magic.

Looking Ahead

As hybrid and immersive events grow, entertainment will continue to evolve. We’re already seeing greater demand for interactive performers, digital integrations, and personalisation at scale. Yet the essence remains the same: creating experiences that connect people on a human level.

After more than two decades and £130m of work secured for our artists, I believe the future belongs to event planners and businesses who recognise that entertainment isn’t just an addition — it’s the foundation of unforgettable events.

Astrological Insight & Forecast On AI & Entertainment — Saturn’s Age-Old Role In Reshaping Showbiz Make Way For Human-Machine Collaborations

by jummy84 September 30, 2025

Artificial Intelligence has arrived like a tidal wave, transforming the entertainment industry in ways that few could have imagined. Films can now be written, edited, and even acted by algorithms. Music can be composed in seconds, and faces that never existed can command the screen. For traditional structures of show business, this is both exhilarating and unsettling. From an astrological perspective, such upheavals are not random. Saturn’s cycles have always coincided with deep restructuring, testing industries and cultures until only the most adaptive survive. With Saturn moving from Aquarius into Pisces, the twin forces of innovation and imagination are colliding, forcing the entertainment industry to rethink its foundations. To understand where we stand today, it helps to look back at how Saturn has repeatedly reshaped art, culture, and technology over the decades.

When Saturn entered Aquarius in the mid-1960s, the entertainment industry began to change in ways that echoed the very spirit of that sign. Aquarius is the sign of innovation, rebellion against tradition, and collective progress, and true to its symbolism, technology and culture reshaped how people experienced art and performance. Satellites like Telstar and Early Bird made it possible to broadcast live television across continents, turning entertainment into a global event. The Beatles’ performances and world news could suddenly be shared across oceans in real-time. At the same time, color television was moving into the mainstream, adding a vivid new dimension that audiences could no longer imagine living without. Music was undergoing a revolution of its own. The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and The Rolling Stones were breaking away from tradition, and rock music became a vehicle for rebellion and individuality.

Youth culture, for the first time, emerged as the dominant tastemaker in fashion, film, and music. Cinema too was undergoing an upheaval, with the New Wave movements in Europe and directors like Stanley Kubrick pushing boundaries of storytelling and technology. Broadway embraced counterculture with experimental productions such as Hair. Behind the scenes, lighter cameras and portable sound equipment made it easier to film outside studios, giving rise to cinéma vérité and new forms of documentary realism. Psychedelic art and music expanded the imagination further, probing altered states of consciousness and changing how art was created and experienced.

These shifts were not accidental. Saturn in Aquarius tested the entertainment industry by dismantling conventions and introducing innovations that, though disruptive at first, laid the foundation for the decades that followed. The entertainment landscape that emerged carried Saturn’s signature: skepticism, experimentation, resistance, and finally, enduring change. A similar cycle unfolded when Saturn returned to Aquarius in the early to mid-1990s, a fertile period for entertainment innovation across the world and in India. The internet, powered by Mosaic and later Netscape, entered public life, and studios began experimenting with websites to market films and music.

In 1994, Sony launched the PlayStation in Japan, and by 1995, it had reached the West, transforming gaming into a global mass industry. That same year, the DVD format was announced, destined to replace VHS and digitize home video, while RealAudio foreshadowed streaming by making live internet audio possible. Film was revolutionized by CGI. Jurassic Park, released in 1993, proved that digital effects could create lifelike creatures, while Toy Story, released in 1995, became the first fully computer-animated feature film. Independent cinema rose through Sundance and Miramax, with directors like Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, and Richard Linklater reshaping the landscape.

At the same time, cable and satellite television expanded. In the US, niche channels multiplied, while in India, newly liberalized markets saw Star TV, Zee TV, Sony, MTV, and Channel V redefine home viewing. Cable operators mushroomed, Doordarshan’s monopoly collapsed, and audiences suddenly had choice and variety. Saturn in Aquarius once again dismantled the old order and seeded innovations that would dominate decades later. Another three decades on, in the 2020s, its return coincided with the rise of OTT platforms. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, JioCinema, Zee5, and SonyLIV became mainstream during the COVID-19 lockdowns, reaching every corner of the country. Regional cinema flourished, breaking through language barriers and finding pan-India audiences. Just as satellite TV dethroned Doordarshan in the 1990s, OTT has weakened Bollywood’s theatrical dominance today. And now Artificial Intelligence is adding yet another layer, from dubbing and subtitling in multiple languages to AI-driven personalization, reshaping not only what audiences watch but how they watch it.

Another major breakthrough of this era came in the editing room. Non-linear editing, or NLE, allowed filmmakers to abandon the old linear, reel-to-reel process and embrace a flexible, digital system. Avid’s Media Composer, launched in 1989, grew into a powerful force by the mid-1990s. The Oscar for Best Editing, awarded to The English Patient in 1996, which had been cut on Avid, confirmed that the industry was changing. Saturn in Aquarius demanded restructuring once again, and by the early 2000s, NLE had become the industry norm. Digital cinematography soon followed. George Lucas tested digital cameras for Star Wars: Episode I in 1999 and shot Attack of the Clones entirely on digital in 2002. The transition was slow, resisted by purists who loved celluloid, but by the early 2010s, digital filmmaking and projection had become dominant. As before, Saturn in Aquarius dismantled tradition and forced new technologies into place, leaving the industry transformed.

Nearly 60 years after the 1960s shift, and three decades after the revolutions of the 1990s, Saturn’s return to Aquarius has coincided with another technological upheaval, this time in Artificial Intelligence. The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 and the explosive rise of AI-powered tools gave ordinary people access to powers once unimaginable. As in earlier cycles, the entertainment industry is the arena where this upheaval is being felt most keenly. AI can generate flawless actors who never age, compose music in moments, edit films, design soundscapes, and even write scripts. Just as the shift from black-and-white to color television changed storytelling forever, and just as digital editing and cinematography restructured filmmaking, AI is adding a new layer of vividness, interactivity, and possibility.

ChatGPT ChatGPT
The Rise Of AI-Powered Tools Began With ChatGPT (Photo Credit- ChatGPT Screenshot)

The parallel with the counterculture of the 1960s is also striking. Then, young people drove the rebellion against convention with their music and their art. In the 1990s, young filmmakers embraced digital tools to bypass old hierarchies. Today, Gen Z and digital natives are the ones adopting AI most quickly, bypassing studios and using these tools to create films, songs, and visual art without gatekeepers. What once required massive budgets and armies of professionals can now be attempted by students with laptops. The youth today shoot YouTube videos and Instagram reels that go viral, and short films made on phones have gone on to win prestigious awards.

With AI, they will soon be able to produce full-fledged films on their computers, even if the technology is still evolving. Distribution has been democratized as well. Social media, YouTube, and OTT platforms have already weakened the stranglehold of theaters, television networks, and record labels. Anyone can release a film, song, or show online, and audiences themselves decide what succeeds. Saturn in Aquarius, which rules networks and collective systems, has ensured that creativity is no longer confined to those with access to traditional distribution channels.

Now Saturn has moved into Pisces, the sign where Venus, the planet of art and creativity, is exalted. Pisces governs imagination, illusion, and endings, and it is here that Saturn’s stern influence is being felt most directly in show business. Old systems of stardom may fade, studios that resist change may collapse, and careers built on traditional structures may not survive. Yet Pisces also rules dreams and boundless creativity, and under Saturn’s discipline, imagination is being shaped into usable and lasting forms. Out of endings, new beginnings will emerge.

Songs co-created by humans and algorithms, films starring entirely virtual casts, and interactive forms of entertainment that blend reality and dreams are no longer distant possibilities but the natural outcomes of this cycle. At the same time, Saturn in Pisces is testing the industry with new external pressures. Donald Trump’s policies, including the imposition of a 100% tariff on all movies made outside the US, are a reminder that political barriers can weigh as heavily as technological ones. For global cinema, such measures threaten to fragment distribution and restrict audiences, adding another layer of challenge while the industry is already being forced to reinvent itself under the influence of AI.

Donald TrumpDonald Trump

The symbolism of Pisces is evident in the rise of holographic performances of departed musicians, AI dubbing that allows actors to speak in dozens of languages with their own voices, and experiments with dream simulations and subconscious mapping. Voice cloning, text-to-speech, and AI-driven dubbing mean that, in theory, every piece of content could be available to everyone, everywhere. The implications are profound. Markets for entertainment will expand by transcending language barriers, cultures will gain new avenues to understand one another, and xenophobia could diminish as the world grows closer to being a true global village.

This runs directly against the rigidity that has defined linguistic and cultural boundaries for decades. At the same time, augmented reality and virtual reality are poised to take cinema into uncharted territory, where audiences will not only watch stories but step inside them, experiencing films as immersive worlds rather than passive spectacles. Entertainment is dissolving its limits, moving into realms once thought impossible. Yet Saturn ensures there are no shortcuts. Just as the dotcom boom ended with a crash that pruned away the unsustainable, AI in entertainment will face lawsuits, backlash, and a shakeout that eliminates the weak while forcing the survivors to endure and evolve.

When Saturn leaves Pisces in 2027 and enters Aries, the sign of new beginnings, the entertainment industry will not look the same. Stars may be partly digital, productions largely automated, and creativity increasingly a collaboration between humans and machines. What Saturn is dismantling now, it will rebuild then in bold and pioneering form. Seen as a cycle, the pattern is unmistakable. In the 1960s, Saturn in Aquarius oversaw the global spread of television, color broadcasting, and counterculture music, while in India, it coincided with the cautious beginnings of Doordarshan. In the 1990s, Saturn in Aquarius drove the rise of the internet, satellite TV, digital editing, CGI, and gaming, while in India it dismantled Doordarshan’s monopoly and opened homes to Star, Zee, and MTV.

In the 2020s, Saturn in Aquarius has opened the door to Artificial Intelligence, reshaping creativity and distribution globally, while in India, it has cemented the dominance of OTT and regional storytelling. Each time, Aquarius has broken old systems, democratized access, and introduced tools that seemed radical at first but soon became indispensable. Now, with Saturn in Pisces, we are witnessing endings, transitions, and reinventions, before Saturn enters Aries in 2027 to inaugurate a new beginning. The script of show business has always been rewritten under Saturn’s gaze, and this time, the collaboration is not just between humans but between humans and machines.

Is joy recession proof? Only 22% would give up live entertainment if financially squeezed

by jummy84 September 30, 2025

New report from AEG unveils the unparalleled power of live music and events in the UK

  • 46% of live music fans prioritise spending on live entertainment even during times of economic uncertainty
  • Feelings of excitement (70%), joy (63%) and even euphoria (32%) make fans unwilling to cut live event expenditure
  • The halo effect has seen one in two fans make a purchase decision based on a brand’s association with a live music event
  • Consumer attention at live events greater than when speaking with family and friends

As a nation of live entertainment fanatics1, nearly half (46%) of live music fans2 prioritise spending on live entertainment, even during times of economic uncertainty. Consumers are unwilling to forgo opportunities to feel positive emotions, like joy and excitement, and make lasting memories.

According to The Live Effect – a new report from AEG Global Partnerships, the sponsorship arm of the world leader in live sport and entertainment, which investigates the power of live music for consumers and brands in the UK – only one in five (22%) would cut live entertainment if they needed to reduce their spending due to financial pressures. Consumers are more likely to cut spending on luxury grocery items (41%), dining out (31%), fitness memberships (30%) and even international holidays (30%) to hold onto live experiences.

Among dedicated live music fans, who have attended at least six shows in the past three years, only 16% would give up live entertainment – ranking it 13th out of 14 categories on the chopping block and highlighting the value music-loving consumers place on live events.

The feel-good factor

Strategy experts from AEG’s Global Partnerships division put the inclination to prioritise live events down to the impact of positive emotions. Anticipation builds from the moment of booking, with 59% feeling highly excited when purchasing live music tickets – second only to booking a holiday (70%).

When attending events, music fans feel excitement (70%), joy (63%) and even euphoria (32%). Many also feel a sense of freedom (35%), inspiration (35%) and nostalgia (34%). For all but 2% of fans, these feelings extend far beyond events themselves, with around one in five (22%) agreeing that the positive emotions become lasting memories.

Halo effect

Positive emotions and cherished memories ensure that live music remains a high priority despite economic instability and high inflation, but they also create a halo effect for brands who can elevate experiences. Nearly half (49%) of fans have made a purchase decision based on a brand’s association with a live entertainment event, increasing among traditionally hard-to-reach Gen Z and Millennials consumers (73% and 65% respectively).

Heightened emotions at live music events also impact attention. The Live Effect reveals that fans’ attention at live music events (rated an average of 8.10 on a scale of 1-10) is greater than when talking with family and friends (7.62), watching a movie in a theatre (7.51) or browsing social media (5.70), allowing partner brands to land messages more effectively and build deeper connections.

Seven in ten (70%) say they have felt ‘at home’ among people who understand them at a live music event, while 63% report making an immediate connection with strangers. Remarkably, half (53%) even feel more understood by fellow fans than by people in their everyday lives.

Paul Samuels, President – Global Partnerships at AEG International, said: “In times of economic instability, sometimes we need a little joy and excitement in our lives, which is why so few fans are prepared to curb their spending on live entertainment in the face of financial hardship. Brands that can elevate fans’ experiences through authentic activations can harness the halo of the positive emotions and heightened attention to shift perceptions, increase consideration, boost sales and build lasting relationships with niche or hard-to-reach groups of consumers.”

50 Cent’s Louisiana Entertainment District Approved In Shreveport

50 Cent‘s plans to further his entertainment endeavors in Shreveport, La., will continue after gaining approval to develop the downtown area of the city from the Shreveport City Council. According to local news outlet KTBS, construction is expected to begin as early as the fourth quarter of this year, or the first quarter of next.

Before the affirmative vote, District A Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor noted, “I think we need to note for the record this is one of the largest economic development deals in this city, in this region, that we’re having.”

The outlet reported that the rapper is investing $50 million from his own pocket, and that the proposed Film and Entertainment Gateway Economic Development District would levy a 2% sales tax inside its boundaries, with all revenue flowing into a dedicated trust fund for redevelopment projects, with rules set for how money could be spent.

“Positive vibes all roads lead to SHREVEPORT art, entertainment, music film&Television,” exclaimed the 50-year-old when sharing the news on Instagram. “let’s work!”

The “Many Men” performer first launched the G-Unit film and television studio in Shreveport back in December 2024, leasing the Millennium Studio.

“We already know that 50 Cent is a mighty mogul in the entertainment business,” Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor said at the time. “But, the residual affects for local businesses here is what’s going to be felt. We have rebranded Shreveport in the entertainment industry, and now we are considering ourselves back again as an entertainment mecca.”

According to Complex, in March of this year, the Shreveport City Council unanimously voted in favor of a 30-year lease agreement between Stageworks Louisiana and the Hip-Hop mogul’s entertainment company.

“I didn’t even know I had to speak,” 50 shared of the news.  “Somebody set me up. … This is exciting, man. I’m really just excited to be able to be here today. It’s important. This project is a legacy project for me. I don’t think I’ve done anything that directly affected as many people as this project will here in Shreveport, and I’m just excited to get to it.”

Prop Store’s  Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction Sells Dark Side

There has to be a truly exceptional reason to get anyone, including anyone on the IndieWire staff, to walk into the Times Square Planet Hollywood at 10 a.m. on a Tuesday. In fairness, Planet Hollywoods do tend to have fun movie memorabilia or replica props as part of their decor; the restaurant’s themed focus on filmmaking from the ‘90s onwards has, in its own way, raised an awareness of production design and costumes as items of value and not just souvenirs for cast and crew.

But on this particular Tuesday at 10 a.m., the third floor of New York’s Planet Hollywood had millions of dollars worth of film rarities displayed under museum-grade glass, with glossy catalogues authenticating the provenance of an original stormtrooper helmet, a belt and bullwhip used in “The Last Crusade,” Picard’s Ressikan Flute from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” episode “The Inner Light,” and the lightsaber used in Darth Vader’s dueling sequences (and therefore wielded by the late, legendary fight coordinator Bob Anderson) in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Return of the Jedi.”

'Dead Man's Wire'

Darth Vader, Indiana Jones, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard certainly constitute a “return to office” exception.

The Planet Hollywood display was presented by Prop Store which, since 1998, has been an auction house specifically for film and television memorabilia; the company runs live auctions of over 1,000 lots three times a year. They’re always trying to spread the word beyond their coterie of regular collectors, but it says something for them to be so hyped that they’re willing to hand-carry lightsabers and stick “Men in Black” neuralyzers in an overhead compartment on the flight from LA to New York to market their September 4-6 live auction.

What’s striking about Prop Store’s work — at least to this civilian IndieWire staffer who has never won a live auction bid on eBay — is just how methodically each item is documented and vetted, even sometimes restored. Staff do what COO Brandon Alinger called “screen matches,” where they go through films frame-by-frame in 4K (or even higher resolutions) in order to spot individual scratches and characteristics of props, and separate the genuine articles from inauthentic replicas (and the odd Halloween mask).

The Darth Vader combat lightsaber, for instance, was X-rayed in order to determine that the steel rod, which was used for fight sequences (the sinister red “light” and sound effects were added in after the fact, of course) was indeed assembled in the correct way. The catalogues detailing all of Prop Store’s work are full of pull quotes from the filmmakers, stills from the films, references to other props and inspirations, in addition to meticulous photos of each prop available to bid on. It all looks identical to the material one would find in a fine art auction.

Just like the art world, Alinger told IndieWire that the company does have a lot of “regulars” who are consistently interested in film memorabilia as a whole, or in specific genres/franchises. Occasionally, museums will work with benefactors to put up bids for their collections. But they’re always trying to reach more fans.

The allure of movies and the consolidation of Internet fandoms had deepened the value of the marquee franchise and blockbuster items Prop Store tends to auction. While Alinger would expect items from the original “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” films to be highly prized — they’ve had 40-50 years to appreciate — newer franchise items are just as sought-after, “especially Marvel,” Alinger said.

No doubt there is a cinema and cultural studies thesis to be written about why that is; but it is sufficient for this article’s purposes to say that it’s a mindfuck to stare at a weathered, metal cylinder with a rod sticking out, its black paint slightly peeling, and know that you’re looking at something someone is about to spend possibly millions of dollars to own.

But one also thinks of Ralph McQuarrie, who did the original concept work on the lightsabers, or “Star Wars” set designer and prop maker Roger Christian, and how they must feel, knowing their work has gone on to become, as Alinger put it, “the Ruby Slippers” of their generation of cinema.

George Lucas is probably fine. But Alinger has never seen fans so excited for something.

“Out of anything we’ve handled here at Prop Store, I would say that lightsaber has the potential to reach the highest sale price. But it’s also generated the most response, the most interest from fans,” Alinger said. “We’ve had so many people reaching out to us and saying, ‘I can’t believe you have this,’ or people want to come and attend these in-person previews like the one we’re at now. It’s just something that people have gotten very excited about.”

It will likely be later in the first day of the live auction, sometime on September 4, when Darth Vader’s dueling lightsaber will go up onto the virtual block. Anyone can sign up to bid or simply to watch Prop Store’s live auctions, which take place at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.
