AIIMS trained gastroenterologist shares what happens to your body when you eat eggs for two weeks

If you are looking for a multi-tasker protein, you may want to consider eggs as a valuable addition to your diet. Protein is that one macronutrient that is non-negotiable when it comes to daily intake. Protein, in particular, needs to be a prominent part of your diet, as reaching the daily target is essential for optimal health and body function. Since protein is an indispensable part of the diet, let’s ensure the source is high-performing, supporting other bodily functions as well.

Dr Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford Universities, in a November 23 Instagram post, revealed what happens if you eat eggs for two weeks. In the post, he unpacked the egg’s robust nutritional profile.

The gastroenterologist shared the nutrient composition. Breaking it down, he highlighted that the entirety of the egg contains protein, making it very nutrient-dense. The yolk has 2.5 grams, while white contains 4 grams. He described it as a ‘high-quality protein,’ making it a top protein pick.

He listed out the various benefits and how it helps your body if you make eggs a daily part of your diet:

1. Protects vision

Eggs carry nutrients that protect your eyesight and prevent the risks of eye-related issues. Dr Sethi added, “Eggs help prevent macular degeneration and cataracts.” Both are age-related vision problems. As per the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, when macular degeneration happens, it becomes difficult to see things clearly in the centre of your vision. The side vision stays fine, the distorted vision is confined to the centre of vision, as this condition affects the macula, a part at the centre of the retina. And as for cataracts, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the eyes’ lenses turn cloudy, making vision very hazy or blurry.

2. Supports brain health and fatty liver

Eggs are rich in a nutrient which makes them a brain booster and a liver-friendly food. Dr Sethi said, “They are also high in choline, which supports brain health and helps prevent fatty liver.” Fatty liver is one of the most common lifestyle diseases. Press Information Bureau’s July 2024 report stated that every third Indian has fatty liver, suggesting how common this liver condition has become. Similarly, with hectic lifestyles becoming stressful and putting brain health under pressure, eggs offer support for cognitive functions too.

3. Beneficial for cholesterol and blood sugar management

There are many doubts regarding eggs and cholesterol, with some of them being that eggs are responsible for a cholesterol spike. But the gastroneologist assured that they actually support you by raising the good cholesterol. Along with this, eggs also offer the benefits of better blood sugar management and, in turn, keeping your energy high.

“While eggs are high in cholesterol, they can raise your good HDL levels, plus eating them for breakfast helps stabilise blood sugar, keeping you energised throughout the day,” the doctor explained.

Alternative for vegans

Those who are vegetarian or vegan and can’t add eggs to their diet, Dr Sethi suggested tofu as an alternative.

Do you have constipation? Study says eat kiwis and drink mineral water to improve your gut health

A study by King’s College London has found that kiwi fruits can help relieve constipation. The research stated that magnesium oxide supplements may help reduce constipation symptoms, as per aBBC report. The report claimed that drinking water rich in minerals is preferable to tap water.

Consume Kiwis to fight constipation

One in ten people experiences persistent constipation, which can significantly lower a person’s quality of life. According to theNational Health Service (NHS), if you have not had a bowel motion at least three times in the past week, or if you are going less frequently than normal, you are constipated.

Dr Eirini Dimidi from King’s College London told the BBC: “People can report up to 30 different symptoms of constipation.” According to the latest guidelines, one should focus on fruits and drinks to fight constipation.

On that note, Dr Dimidi explained that people must eat two or three kiwis every day to improve constipation. “Even without the skin, it’s good and contains fibre,” Dimidi added.

The fibre in kiwi fruit has an effect on the gut that can cause bowel contractions and increase the volume of faeces. “Kiwi also increases water content in the gut, which may soften stools,” Dr Dimidi revealed. On the other hand, the fruits can improve immunity since they are rich in vitamin C. Additionally, kiwis can help manage blood pressure as they contain potassium.

Eating eight to ten prunes and some rye bread as a daily snack can also have a comparable impact.

The benefits of drinking mineral water

Dr Dimidi also claims that mineral water “is better than tap water”. Magnesium is an essential mineral that acts as a laxative. The study indicates that consuming magnesium oxide supplements has many advantages.

Magnesium oxide supplements can lessen lower abdominal pain, bloating, and straining as well as facilitate bowel movements.

According to Professor Kevin Whelan, the new guidance “marks a promising step towards empowering health professionals and their patients to manage constipation through diet”.

The British Dietetic Association also lauded the research by King’s College London. It said the latest guidance was “a more diet-focused and evidence-based approach to the management of chronic constipation”.

3 Snacks To Eat For a Better Night’s Sleep

by jummy84 November 15, 2025
written by jummy84

How you eat can have a major impact on your energy throughout the day, and even impact how well you sleep. The common advice is to get enough protein, avoid eating between meals, and be sure to have your last meal of the day four hours before bedtime. It all seems reasonable—that is, until you’re lying in bed with a growling tummy and a mind that won’t stop obsessing.

Turns out that having an afternoon snack can make all the difference—provided that the snack in question contains the right nutrients, of course. In fact, according to the principles of chrononutrition, which involves eating according to the body’s biological needs at a given moment, eating certain nutrients in the afternoon can drastically your nighttime snooze.

Why have a snack?

In the late afternoon, the body’s blood sugar levels naturally dip. As an added bonus, serotonin, the hormone that promotes feelings of wellbeing and regulates sleep-wake rhythms, is synthesized into melatonin when the sun begins to set, thanks to the amino acid tryptophan. Both of these factors can influence our appetite, which is why we often crave a snack as soon as the work day begins to end.

In other words, craving an afternoon snack is perfectly natural. But choosing what to eat when the craving hits is key. The goal is to provide the body with energy without causing blood sugar to spike—and, to eat something healthy that will provide sustenance without ruining our appetite for dinner.

The importance of magnesium and tryptophan

For a restful night’s sleep, “it’s best to target foods rich in sleep-inducing nutrients such as magnesium and tryptophan,” explains Dr Laure Hyvernat, a gut microbiota expert.

Increasing magnesium intake through diet or supplements, has been shown to significantly improve sleep quality. Magnesium also has a powerful calming effect. Avocados, dark chocolate (90% raw cacao), and walnuts are excellent sources of this precious mineral. Most of us suffer from magnesium deficiency due to high levels of stress and poor digestion, which adds up to poor absorption of nutrients.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and precursor of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Eating tryptophan-rich foods will facilitate the synthesis of melatonin and have a positive impact on your nights. It is also the precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin, also known as the happiness hormone. Tryptophan is found in large quantities in bananas, almonds, and chocolate, or more precisely in cacao, so choose a version with at least 90% cocoa.

Afternoon snacks that improve sleep

Banana

“Rich in tryptophan, magnesium, B vitamins, and carbohydrates, the banana is the ideal fruit to have at snack time. As an added bonus, it’s rich in prebiotic fiber, which nourishes your microbiota and thus contributes to a strong immune system during germ season,” says Hyvernat.

Dark chocolate

Chocolate with a high cocoa content makes a great snack thanks to “its rich magnesium content, which helps you cope with everyday stress,” notes Hyvernat. Just one caveat about chocolate: It can be energizing because it contains caffeine and theobromine, so avoid eating it too close to bedtime.

Almonds

“One handful of almonds boosts tryptophan,” says Hyvernat, who recommends “activating” them by soaking them for an hour or so in a glass of water, then draining and drying them before eating. “This step not only makes them crunchier, but also deactivates their phytic acid, an anti-nutrient that prevents the proper absorption of the minerals such as iron, zinc, and calcium.”

3 recipes for healthy afternoon snacks

Bananas, almonds, and chocolate can be eaten alone, or used as ingredients to make tasty, sleep-improving afternoon snacks. Below are a few healthy options that Hyvernat recommends:

New Orleans Guide: Where to Stay, Eat, Drink, and Revel in the Big Easy

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Opened in June 2025, this contemporary Asian restaurant by Chef Ashwin Vilkhu is a love letter to family dinners from his childhood growing up in New Orleans. The Farouki Farouki interiors are inspired by golden hour in his family’s home where he learned to cook, and the restaurant is named after the street his family lived after they moved from New Delhi to New Orleans in the 1980s. The four-course dinner takes guests on a sensory tour of his most cherished flavors, including the crab, brie, and Champagne soup, which pairs beautifully with a crémant.

For an easygoing snack and drink, head for Bar Pomona in the Marigny. The interiors read like a countryside diner (in the best way) and on Mondays they serve up lasagna alongside natural wines from regions such as the Jura and Savoie.

If you’re not already a tiki cocktail convert, this is the place to try it. The founder, Jeff Berry, is credited with reviving vintage tiki cocktails to their original glory in the 1990s, and the menu weaves together premium spirits with compelling flavors like anise, pandan leaf extract, and almond.

Rightfully earning its position on The New York Times’s 2024 Best New Restaurants list, this seafood-driven Mexican spot in the Bywater neighborhood is in a league of its own. Co-owned by sisters and Mexico City natives Ana and Lydia Castro (the former a James Beard Award-nominated chef), Acamaya is one of the most exciting new additions to New Orleans’s storied hospitality scene. There’s no point giving ordering advice here—everything on the menu is just that good.

Caribbean flavors meet Cuban heritage at this French Quarter mainstay that’s helmed by executive chef Alfredo Nogueira. The bar has been open for over a decade, but each visit offers something new thanks to its seasonal approach to ingredients. The cocktail menu is sensational (first-timers should get the classic Hurricane & Table) and flavorful dishes like the sweet plantains and fish rundown complement each other from start to finish.

A New Orleans fine dining classic, Brennan’s has been an institution since opening in 1946. The restaurant is credited with inventing the flaming dessert, Bananas Foster, which is theatrically prepared table side and worth a visit for alone (though it’s worth mentioning the Eggs St. Charles on the brunch menu are to die for).

Perched on a quiet corner along Magazine Street, this uptown restaurant sits in a 19th-century building that once sold provisions like butter, fresh cream, and imported teas. The menu is helmed by James Beard Award-winner Chef Justin Devillier and offers a creative, contemporary spin on traditional New Orleans cuisine. Whatever you do, don’t leave without trying the blue crab beignets.

There are few culinary experiences in New Orleans more stimulating than the tasting menu at Emeril’s. Celebrity Chef Emeril Lagasse opened the flagship restaurant in 1990 and it’s now deftly guided by his son E.J. Lagasse. Expect it all—a lavish butter cart, Petrossian caviar, the finest and freshest Louisiana meats and produce—all savored within an elegant dining room designed with floor-to-ceiling glass that showcases the kitchen in its entirety, which you get a mini tour of at the beginning of your evening. (Might we suggest opting for the wine pairing with your tasting menu?)

There’s no such thing as the best po’boy in the city—there are too many fine contenders, each offering their own standout style. While Liuzza’s by the Track, Domilise’s, and Parkway Bakery & Tavern are worthy shout-outs for this Louisiana classic, Verti Marte is an undeniable top pick. Don’t expect to be seated—this is a cash-only deli in the French Quarter. But what it lacks in table space, it more than makes up for in flavor.

Jimmy Eat World Tease ‘Loud’ EP With New Song

by jummy84 November 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Jimmy Eat World have rounded up a handful of digital-only singles as well as a new track, “Failure,” for the Something(s) Loud EP, which will be released Nov. 14 in physical form by the band’s Exotic Location Recordings label.

“Failure” was recorded during 2019 sessions for the album Surviving but was ultimately held back from that project. The song was co-produced by the band and Justin Meldal Johnsen, while Failure leader Ken Andrews engineered and mixed. Check out its skateboarding-themed video below.

Something(s) Loud also includes “Something Loud” in both original and acoustic versions, “Place Your Debts” in its maiden form plus a TW Walsh remix and a cover of Crooked Fingers’ “Call to Love” with Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino.

“By 2021, it felt like distancing restrictions were finally easing and we could get back on the road,” Jimmy Eat World’s Jim Adkins says. “Our Surviving album had barely been released before we were performing live again and reconnecting with fans. Coming out of the pandemic, it didn’t feel right to tour without offering something more, so we took the chance to share a few more tracks we’d been working on. At the time, it seemed like listeners were gravitating toward playlists rather than full albums, so we decided to meet them where they were.”

Although details are scant, Jimmy Eat World are promising “more big plans” in 2026.

Fortis gastronologist says ‘sweets are more harmful than you think’; shares the right way to eat them this Diwali

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

Diwali is synonymous with lights, laughter, and an endless array of sweets. While indulging is part of the celebration, overdoing it can take a toll on your health. Dr Shubham Vatsya, gastroenterologist and hepatologist, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, Delhi, explains in his October 17 Instagram post why sweets can be more harmful than you think and shares the right way to enjoy them this festive season. (Also read: Fortis gastroenterologist warns your daily fruit juices are actually ‘sugar syrups’ with hidden health risks )

Dr. Shubham Vatsya highlights the negative effects of sweets on skin and overall health.(Pexels)

Are sweets really ageing your skin

“Sweets are more harmful than you think! This Diwali, your glow won’t come from the lights, it’ll come from your choices. Every extra bite of dessert silently sticks to your collagen, stealing your skin’s bounce and speeding up ageing,” Dr Shubham wrote in the caption.

He adds, “It’s not just about weight anymore, it’s about youth. So before that extra piece of mithai… just ask yourself, glow chahiye, ya wrinkles?”

“Do you want to glow this Diwali or just wear jewellery? The choice is actually decided by sweets. People think sweets only make you gain weight. But every extra bite of sweets slowly reduces your youthfulness,” warns Dr Shubham.

How can you enjoy sweets without harming your health?

According to Dr Vatsya, sweets contain sugar that binds with collagen and elastin proteins in your body, the very proteins that keep your skin tight and youthful. This process, known as glycation, doesn’t just affect your skin. “This sugar also weakens your blood cells and accelerates the ageing of your organs,” he explains.

He further cautions that overindulging in sweets can double the risk of diabetes, heart problems, and brain-related issues. Dr Vatsya advises, “If you want to stay young and healthy, never make sweets a daily habit.”

This Diwali, while celebrating with lights, laughter, and family, it’s important to enjoy sweets in moderation and prioritise your long-term health.

What to eat to boost both your gut and mind? Try yoghurt, idli, chaas and more

What to eat to boost both your gut and mind? Try yoghurt, idli, chaas and more

by jummy84 October 14, 2025

The gut and brain are interconnected through an axis called the gut-brain axis. It is a two-way network that influences each other. According to Harvard Health Publishing, this connection is the reason why emotional stress can trigger digestive issues, and further, in turn, gut imbalances can impact mental health. In fact, the gut communicates with the brain through various pathways, from nerves to the immune system. This means to keep your mental wellbeing healthy, you need to eat foods that also benefit your gut health.

Add yoghurt to your diet as it is a rich source of probiotics. (Picture credit: Unsplash)

Prakriti Poddar, mental health expert and global head of mental health and wellbeing at Roundglass Living, shared with HT Lifestyle that the gut is the ‘second brain’ and it is very vital in regulating the emotional state, moods and emotions. So what you eat is not only crucial for nutrient absorption but also impacts emotions and cognitive functions.

What happens when your gut is well-balanced?

Gut balance begins by nourishing your gut microbiome first. “Gut is home to trillions of microbes, and it communicates directly with your central nervous system through the gut-brain axis,” Prakriti added.

A balanced gut health enhances your mental well-being. Prakriti revealed how gut bacteria help in reducing your stress and anxiety. She said, “When the gut is balanced, it supports calm, focus, and resilience. About 95% of the body’s serotonin, known as the ‘happiness chemical,’ is produced in the gut, which helps regulate mood and sleep. Beneficial bacteria in the gut also create gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that helps reduce stress and anxiety while improving rest.”

It puts things in perspective to realise that these gut microbes are actively influencing brain chemistry, helping regulate key neurotransmitters which are crucial for determining mood.

Foods you need to add to your diet

Idli is a popular Indian breakfast which is good for gut health because of the fermentation process. (Picture credit: Shutterstock)

Fermented foods are one of the top picks for good gut health. And since good gut health influences the mind positively, you need to eat fermented foods, fibre-rich sources for mental wellbeing too.

“To support both gut and mind, choose foods that nourish this ecosystem. Fermented foods, such as yoghurt, idlis, kimchi, and chaas, aid digestion and are excellent additions. Whole grains provide fibre, nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and pistachios, along with seeds like chia or flax seeds, supply healthy fats, while colourful fruits and vegetables offer antioxidants,” Prakriti recommended.

So if you fix your diet and make it multitask for you by including gut-friendly foods, you can both nourish your mind and improve gut health. A healthy gut is one of the pillars of a happy mind.

Navratri 2025: Fasting rules to follow, what to eat and avoid during the 9-day festival of Shardiya Navratri

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Navratri 2025: Shardiya Navratri is just around the corner, and devotees of Maa Durga are preparing to celebrate the nine-day festival with great devotion and enthusiasm. This year, it will be observed from Pratipada to Navami of Ashwin Shukla Paksha, falling between September 22 and October 2. During this period, devotees worship Maa Durga’s nine forms, known as the Navadurgas. (Also read: Navratri 2025 calendar: When is Shardiya Navratri? Know correct dates and auspicious colours of all 9 days of festival )

Fasting is a significant part of the festival. Across the country, many devotees observe day-long fasts throughout Navratri, while some follow the tradition of “jodas,” fasting on two days out of the nine. Regardless of whether one is fasting, devotees are advised to follow certain dos and don’ts during this auspicious period.

Rules to follow during Navratri fasting

  • Navratri fasting is not just about abstaining from certain foods, it also involves lifestyle practices and guidelines:
  • Avoid strict fasting if you are a small child, elderly, pregnant, or nursing.
  • Skip regular salt, meat, eggs, onions, and garlic; use rock salt (sendha namak) instead.
  • Stay away from alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs.
  • Stay hydrated with water, milk, and fresh fruit juices.
  • Wake up early, take a bath, wear fresh clothes, and offer prayers to Maa Durga.

  • Black clothing is considered inauspicious during this period.
  • Avoid haircuts, nail treatments, or shaving.
  • Both men and women can observe the fast; if nine days is difficult, fasting for a few days is acceptable.
  • Evening meals should be sattvic, fruits, milk, and juices are suitable for daytime consumption.
  • Charity and helping others are encouraged.
  • On Ashtami and Navami, Kanya Pujan is performed, where young girls are worshipped as manifestations of Goddess Durga.

Foods you can eat during Navratri

1. Flours: Buckwheat, rajgira, and water chestnut flour for rotis, puris, and other dishes.

2. Sabudana: Sago is used to make khichdi, vadas, and kheer.

3. Fruits and Dairy: Fresh fruits, milk, yoghurt, and homemade juices.

4. Vegetables: Gourd, potato, spinach, tomato, and capsicum.

5. Rock salt: Use instead of regular salt.

6. Samak eice: Also called Varai or Barnyard Millet, a substitute for regular rice.

Foods to avoid during Navratri

1. Wheat, rice, and their products

2. Pulses and beans

3. Onion and garlic

4. Meat, fish, and eggs

5. Alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs

6. Packed or canned foods
