Shawn Johnson and Andrew East on Season 4, Preparing for the Show, and More (Exclusive)

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Shawn Johnson and Andrew East may be former professional athletes, but Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test was far from a cake walk for the couple.

“We’re very used to, I don’t want to say physical pain, but coming from elite athletics, we know how to deal with that,” Johnson tells TV Insider. “It’s an expectation. The mental side was way different than anything I think Andrew or I had ever dealt with before, so that was new.”

They both agree that the mental portion of the show was much harder than the physical portion for them, even though they attempted to train for the grueling physical challenges before filming.

“I thought it was going to be all physical challenges, so I was like, ‘Let’s make sure we’re in good shape and our cardio’s good and our strength’s good,’ but there was so many different types of challenges beyond just the physical challenges that you can’t prepare for,” East explains. “It’s like, how do you face your biggest fear? You have to just face it and see how you do in that situation. … It takes a really unique skillset to do well on that course. It’s way more than just physical prowess.”

Johnson says she tried to work on “holding [her] breath underwater” and “rucking because [she] knew the [backpacks] were heavy,” adding, “I think the only thing we really did was work out to make sure we were feeling good.”

Scroll down for more from our chat with the Season 4 cast members, including how they supported each other through the course, despite competing individually, and more.

Tell me a little about getting cast for the show – was one of you approached first or was it always a two-for-one deal?

Shawn Johnson: I had been asked in previous seasons and, unfortunately, always had to say no because I was either pregnant or postpartum. This time when they came back, they offered both of us, and I was like, “Oh heck yes.” I’d rather do it with my husband, anyways.

Andrew East: I think what made us want to do it is we are kind of adrenaline junkies. We knew there’d be a lot of exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. I think we walked away wanting to keep those experiences once-in-a-lifetime and not do them again because it was a really grueling experience but definitely worth it.

Was there any hesitation knowing you were going to be away from the kids for a few weeks and everything?

East: There was for sure hesitation about leaving our kids, but we talked to all the doctors and psychologists and they were like, “We think your kids will be OK for this duration of time.”

Johnson: We brought in, like, a full army for our kids. They didn’t even notice we were gone.

East: They were with their cousins and nana and papa and the whole thing. It was great. I think they probably preferred us leaving. But it was so fun to do together, and I’m glad we did that.

Were you able to work together on the show at all, or was it totally an individual thing?

Johnson: Totally individual, which was fine. We were separated pretty quickly and we would still see each other throughout the day, but we were rarely on the same team. The teams change multiple times a day. You go from singles to doubles to big teams to small teams. But it was almost better that way. We were both independently there for our own challenging to see how far we could go. We were just big cheerleaders for each other.

East: The whole vibe of the show, too, is that everyone is kind of competing against each other, but you’re also not in certain ways. Everyone’s rooting for each other and it feels like if one wins, the whole team wins. I feel like that was the case for Shawn and I and all the cast members. It was really fun to know Shawn and know where she had more she could do and maybe where I could push her in certain ways and if she’s in a really uncomfortable spot, maybe I can show her some good old love in that moment. It was great and I feel like we all got closer together.

Were there ever moments when you saw one another struggling and weren’t able to help the other one?

Johnson: I mean, yeah. We both saw each other go through moments of struggle. It definitely hurts as a spouse to see that. Andrew saw me get concussed and be given a broken nose, and I saw him crack ribs. It was wild that way. But it also challenged both of us to have faith in each other’s strengths and just be like, “I’m here for you if you need me, but you got it.”

East: That was really cool where I know what Shawn’s capable of in a really unique way, I think, so in some ways it was like, you don’t need my help and I’d just remove myself from the picture. Honestly, I would put my money on Shawn in any type of competition or if she’s facing any other competitor. So I knew that she was going to crush it the whole way.

Had you watched past seasons of the show, and were you able to talk to any former cast members about their experiences?

Johnson: We had. So we had watched all the seasons and we have a lot of friends who have been on the first three seasons. A lot of advice – it’s only so transferable because every season’s very different and you don’t know what the challenges are going to be. But I think everyone said the same thing, which is just focus on getting to the next meal. Basically don’t look at the bigger picture, just do little steps day by day.

East: Everyone said it was way harder in person than what the show shows. It’s the little things. Like they really intentionally build the whole experience to make you uncomfortable. They did a good job with that.

What would you say surprised you the most about the experience?

Johnson: I think my favorite thing about the experience was the relationships with the DS and the recruits. I think it’s such an eclectic cast. We’re all from different walks and industries and styles of life, but we all became so close, so fast, and really trusted each other with our lives. The DS imparted their wisdom and their stories and learning they’re truly just trying to make you better was really special.

Was there anyone on the cast that you got close with that you didn’t expect?

Johnson: I didn’t know Brianna [LaPaglia] before at all, and we got to be really close on the show.

East: It was fun because it was such an eclectic crew. Some of the crew was on other reality shows. This was my first reality TV experience, and I think it was very shocking at how stressful the entire experience was. You’re not filming and going back to some fancy hotel room and eating a fancy meal. It’s 24/7 stress and you don’t know what’s going to happen and when. It was constant surprises, is what I felt like.

What are you excited for people to see this season?

Johnson: I am itching to see it. I cannot wait. Because the only thing I remember is myself. I feel like, when we’re doing the show, it’s so intense, you’re so focused on doing your job and helping your team, we actually don’t get to watch a lot of each other go through these moments. Everybody’s on a very specific journey that the DS are helping them with. So I think it will, I don’t know, finish the story for me, to see everyone’s journey and everyone’s struggles and see how they handled it all. I’m so excited to watch it.

East: I’m excited because I think there’s a little bit of everything in it. We laugh, we cry ,we had near-death experiences, we had deep talks. I think it will just be a good TV show to watch. So I’m really excited to watch it.

Middle East move signals start of global expansion for Strata

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Strata, the brand experience agency which is part of the Strata Group has begun its first steps towards international expansion with a strategic focus on the Middle East. Senior Account Manager Gabriella Duranti-Hey has relocated to the region on an extended assignment to explore business development opportunities, meet existing and prospective clients and assess the potential for establishing a long-term presence.

The move is part of a phased international growth strategy, placing a dedicated team member in-market to strengthen relationships with clients already operating in the region, particularly across pharma, medical aesthetics, luxury, automotive, technology and financial services.

“This is an exciting opportunity to grow our footprint in a region that holds huge potential,” said Gabriella. “Many of our clients have asked when we’ll have a presence here. Being on the ground enables us to explore what’s possible and where Strata can add value. It’s the first step in what could become a broader global expansion for the group.”

The initiative follows extensive desk research and a business plan developed in 2024. By embedding talent locally, Strata is taking a deliberate and informed approach to international growth, drawing on proven models of success within the sector.

Cole Mulkerins, CEO of Strata, commented, “This marks a pivotal moment for Strata. Expanding into the Middle East is not just about geography, it’s about deepening client relationships, unlocking new markets, and positioning ourselves for long-term, sustainable growth. It’s the first step in a wider international vision that will see our agencies explore new regions while maintaining the creativity and client service we’re known for.

Having a trusted team member on the ground gives us the insight and agility to grow organically in a way that aligns with our values and our ambition. It’s an exciting evolution for the business and a natural next step.”

The Middle East also provides a strategic launchpad for future growth across Asia Pacific, North America and Africa, aligning with the longer term ambitions of Strata and the wider Group.. Further updates on Strata’s international plans will be shared later this year.

Veteran Showrunner Tom Fontana Elected President of WGA East

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Tom Fontana, the respected showrunner known for HBO’s “Oz” and NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street,” has been elected president of the Writers Guild of America East.

The WGA East electoral results were disclosed Thursday evening. Fontana defeated novelist and screenwriter Charles Kipps for the top elected post at the union that represents more than 7,500 film and TV scribes who live east of the Mississippi River.

Sasha Stewart was elected Secretary-Treasurer. Michael Rauch was elected Vice President of the Film/Television/Streaming sector. Nicole Conlan, Chris Gethard, Liz Hynes, Sarah Montana, Sharyn Rothstein and Erica Saleh were elected to serve on the Council representing Film/TV/Streaming members.

Sie Morley, Nitish Pahwa and Samantha Smylie were elected to serve on the Council representing Online Media members.

Fontana will succeed Lisa Takeuchi Cullen at the helm of WGA East. She served two terms as president and lead the guild through its tumultuous five-month strike in 2023. Last year, the WGA East also saw a transition in its senior management as Sam Wheeler came on board as executive director.

According to the WGA East, participation in the board and officers election was strongest among the guild’s bedrock of members who work in Film/TV/Streaming, as some 14% (4,363) of those eligible members cast ballots. In Broadcast/Cable/Streaming News, votes were cast by 7% of eligible voters (1,251). For those in the guild’s Online Media sector, the turnout was 5% (1,966).

Ulla Johnson Brings a Palette of Nature and Sunsets to the Upper East Side for Spring 2026

by jummy84 September 14, 2025
written by jummy84

The Upper East Side has not, historically, been a key location for New York Fashion Week runway shows. But as the presentations have become more scattered across Manhattan and Brooklyn over the past decade — the post-Bryant Park tents era — that’s changed in a big way. As an Upper East Sider, I’m …

Anna Domino: East and West Album Review

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

If Domino’s world on East and West feels topsy-turvy, maybe it’s because the album was made in a state of intense, nearly paralytic anxiety. In 1983, she met the owner of the small indie label Les Disques du Crépuscule during a night out in New York—or did someone send her demo tape to their office in Brussels?—and the label flew her to Belgium to record with a band of local musicians at an unfinished studio, where Domino realized she was “unprepared, shy and inarticulate with no real way to convey what I heard in my head.” She “mimed, stumbled, and crammed everything I could” into her 10-day session, and returned to New York convinced that the label would deem her a lost cause. A few months later, a test pressing of East and West appeared in her mailbox.

You can’t hear any of that drama in the serene and stoic final product. Her elegiac cover of Aretha Franklin’s “Land of Dreams” saps the original of its desperation and desire; Domino sings that “I imagine you oh so close,” but you get the sense she’s more interested in exploring the “land of this wonderful dream.” On “Review,” Domino’s disaffected take on a breakup banger, the frustration of lyrics like, “I’ve taken all of my time/And spent it on you” is quickly supplanted by thoughts of moving out of their shared apartment: “Busy with my inventory/And the pictures and chairs/Picking up what’s left lying on the stairs.” Halfway through, co-producer Blaine L. Reininger’s mewling violin skates into view and becomes the track’s focus, as if Domino got bored of pretending that she gave a damn about the ex anymore. She’s not one to waste time being didactic, but if there’s a lesson to be taken from these five songs, it’s that one is company. Far from some hard-won realization or proto-men-are-trash platitude, it seems to exist at the core of Domino’s being, like it’s never even crossed her mind that other people might actually prefer the company of others.

This idea isn’t always explicit, and, in fact, I suspect Domino would laugh at the attempt to wring such blunt meaning from songs that are so expansive and explorable. A quiet no-wave hymnal like “Everyday, I Don’t” probably only really makes sense to her; it begins mid-thought, with the curious line “And I don’t,” and ends when another figure enters the frame: “12:44, there’s a knock on my door/You want more.”

In 1986, Domino told Record Mirror that “there is a kind of despair that comes into my music. It’s not like I’m afraid of death or anything… it’s just when you know about something and you’re not able to do something about it.” It’s a typically vague statement that seems to allude to an aspect of dramatic irony Domino sees in her own work. There is a performed, hermetically sealed quality to some of these songs; when she exclaims “Look out!” on “Trust, in Love,” it does feel a little like she’s playing Greek chorus to herself, and in my mind’s eye, she strolls a version of New York that looks more like the set Kubrick made for Eyes Wide Shut. Perhaps Domino was simply describing the twitch of anxiety that follows an especially vivid dream—waking to the suggestion that those rotted teeth and naked speaking engagements hold some deeper meaning that you can’t access.

I don’t hear any despair in Domino’s music, especially not in “Everyday, I Don’t.” To me, “Everyday, I say that I won’t, and I don’t” represents the exact opposite of powerlessness. It’s an ultraquotidian mantra, the perfect encapsulation of the freedom Domino found in New York City: the power to step away from the party, slip into bed, and explore the endless universes inside your head.

Watch The Maccabees bring out Jamie T for ‘Marks To Prove It’ and ‘Sticks ‘N’ Stones’ at All Points East headline gig

written by jummy84

The Maccabees were joined by Jamie T during their All Points East headline show. Check out the footage below.

The indie band topped the bill at Victoria Park last night (August 24), after first announcing the gig in October 2024 and ending their eight-year hiatus. The huge gig also coincided with the 10th anniversary of their fourth and final album, ‘Marks To Prove It’, which was released back in 2015.

To celebrate, they brought out Jamie T for a surprise performance of the LP’s title track – marking the first time they’ve played it with him since their 2017 “final” gig at Alexandra Palace.

Two years prior to that, Jamie T also joined them during their Glastonbury 2015 set to perform the track.

He also stuck around to play his 2009 hit ‘Sticks ‘N’ Stones’ with the newly reformed band. Ahead of this gig, he brought out The Maccabees‘ guitarist Hugo White to perform the song during his huge 2023 Finsbury Park show, and before that, at Glastonbury 2022. White also produced Jamie’s T 2022 album ‘The Theory of Whatever’.

Check out the moment below.

In the run-up to their All Points East gig, Felix White and co. also reunited for a huge show at this year’s edition of Glastonbury and, before that, played their first gig back on June 20 at London’s The Dome for a charity gig in aid of MS Society.

While at their South London practice space, the band told NME that it felt like “no time has passed” in their eight-year hiatus. “It’s so strange,” Felix told us in January. “In the chunk [of time] from the last show, you could conceive of The Maccabees as a different existence, but as soon as we started playing, it was as if we hadn’t stopped.”

When asked about the possibility of new music then, he added: “The plan is to do [All Points East] and see how much we love it.” Sam Doyle then chimed in, jokingly saying that they were reluctant to look too far ahead as they “might hate each other by August.”

More recently, Felix said that announcing the band’s return “almost felt embarrassing” after their “definitive” break-up, and confirmed that they are “not writing anything at the moment”.

While at Glastonbury, the band spoke to NME again about playing their first show back together earlier this year. “There was a lot of feeling in that room. It surprised me, actually, because I was finding that on stage, in a split second, I was euphoric and then I was actually crying at Tufnell Park Dome and then feeling other things,” Felix said.

“You felt all this feeling inside your body that the action of playing the music brings out in us, and it was all happening in there and just felt amazing.

At their Glasto set, The Maccabees were joined by Florence Welch, who provided guest vocals on ‘Love You Better’ before performing Florence + The Machine‘s ‘Dog Days Are Over’. NME gave the performance a full five stars and praised the slot as “their most euphoric show to date”.

The band currently have no future performances lined up, but did recently say that they are “tempted” by the idea of recording new music together.
