‘Death By Lightning’ Netflix Editors on Garfield and Guiteau Showdown

by jummy84 November 13, 2025
written by jummy84

[Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers for “Death By Lightning”]

Before we see anything that leads the failed lawyer and frustrated Republican job-seeker Charles Guiteau to shoot President James Garfield, the Netflix miniseries “Death By Lightning” tells us that history forgot both of these men. Fans of “Assassins” may bristle at that a little, but the statement acts as a tragic leveler, bringing both the show’s Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen) and Garfield (Michael Shannon) onto the same volatile playing field.

This parity between the show’s protagonists was essential for the “Death by Lightning” editing team, which consisted of Joseph Krings and Joe Leonard over the course of production and initial picture cuts, then Anna Hauger and Michael Ruscio, along with additional editors Derek Desmond and Bridget Case, for the remainder of post. It enabled the true engine of the series to be the movement between Garfield and Guiteau over the course of the former’s surprise Republican nomination and brief anti-corruption-focused administration. It also demanded that the editors really find empathy for both president and assassin, and imbue that feeling into how they cut the series.

Nowhere is that clearer than in the scene that both Hauger and Krings told IndieWire hit them the hardest. In Episode 3, “Casus Belli,” Guiteau finally worms his way into a meeting with the man he feels he’s helped elect president, angling for a consul post in Paris or Vienna (he’s learning both French and German!). But standing before the object of all his obsessive hopes, Guiteau can’t come out and say what he wants. He has to tell Garfield, first, how much he feels he knows him, and how much Garfield means to him, and a plea almost bursts out of his chest: “Help me!”

It is, to use the parlance of a different age, a big yikes.

The scene lasts no more than three minutes and 30 seconds, but the “Death By Lightning” editing team makes every one of them an agonizing parasocial nightmare. Ruscio told IndieWire that the sequence felt like DeNiro and Pacino finally meeting in “Heat” — “You’re withholding it and then, when it comes, it really delivers at a point where the audience is craving and sort of been hungry for it. And it just delivers so beautifully,” Ruscio said.

Part of the beauty is in how the edit continues to be just tantalizingly withholding. There are 10 different camera setups to capture the sequence: A couple of medium wide shots to establish the space, a close-up of them shaking hands, a medium shot of each man with the other out of focus in the foreground, then a closer medium of each, and a final devastating wide of Guiteau left alone in the doorframe at the end. The scene keeps lingering on Guiteau an awkward extra second, as his praise of Garfield doesn’t land with its audience, and in the moments of highest vulnerability and disappointment, the scene uses the shots that just show each man alone, unable to connect with each other.

“I always like to go into an edit and into a scene or to an episode with a certain amount of empathy for every character,” Hauger told IndieWire. “When Garfield meets Guiteau, you really get this depth of understanding of Guiteau’s longing, and you also get the disappointment at the end when he’s not getting the answers that he wants from Garfield and it’s — Matthew Macfadyen’s performance in that scene is tremendous.”

The mark of great performers, though, is that they give the editors a lot of different colors of an idea or emotion to play with. “He’s so desperate when he’s finally engaging with Garfield, but you know, you can’t play a desperate character desperately. Matthew found a way to really get that humanity in there, and I think the work that we did was really honing in on the performances so everyone could key into who these men were,” Ruscio said.

“Death by Lightning,” to its very great credit, shows that aspects of who these men were could be very funny. Garfield’s farm might be in Ohio, but he has a pretty Clark Kent role as the Good Man of the series, and so, in the scene with Guiteau and elsewhere, has to be quite straightlaced and unmoveably principled — much less fun than Bradley Whitford’s exasperated James Blaine or Shea Whigham’s ultimate dude take on Rosco Conkling. But not no fun, thanks to his wife, Crete (Betty Gilpin).

“Betty Gilpin came with just such a spirit for play. Whenever she would have a scene with Michael, she would just do something weird and crazy and he’d have to react to it and it really opened up Michael to having more variations in his performance,” Krings told IndieWire. “Then he’s like, ‘Oh, OK, we can play here and we can be a little bit more comic and I can be more fun and open.”

Even with the more outwardly buffoonish Chester Arthur (Nick Offerman), the editors felt that some of their job was to get out of the way every time he shouts for “Sausages!” but also some of it to seed little glimmers of someone more serious and more noble throughout, so that his arc feels earned when he finds himself with unexpected responsibility. “You go too far in one direction, and you’re going to have trouble balancing it with the seriousness of the show or the gravity of the show. So it was a really interesting challenge from the very beginning,” Leonard told IndieWire.

For the editors, the moment between the two men in Episode 3 encapsulated the rich mix of humor, tragedy, vanity for fame, and longing for remembrance that are at the heart of “Death By Lightning” and make it feel immediately relatable to a contemporary audience. That is, very much, by design — from the writing, direction, and performances, of course, but also through how long the editors choose to linger on a face and let us understand and emotion, through when they decide to cut to a crushingly confused reaction.

“We are always looking to find the connections and the parallels, but it was such a joy to get to work on something based in a really interesting historical [setting] that actually has these connections to what’s happening now,” Leonard said. “We’re naturally, as filmmaking people, going to want to work [towards] that. The story is being told right now, so it has a relevance to now,” Leonard said.

There is something oddly hopeful about that relevance, despite the tragic ending. All this has happened before, and all of this will happen again, “Death By Lightning” proves — but never meet your heroes.

“Death By Lightning” is now streaming on Netflix.

D’Angelo Son Swayvo Twain Reflects on Weeks With Father Before Death

by jummy84 November 13, 2025
written by jummy84

D’Angelo’s son, Swayvo Twain (born Michael Eugene Archer Jr.), spoke out for the first time since his music icon father’s funeral in a heartfelt post to Instagram on Wednesday (Nov. 12), which featured parts of his emotional eulogy at the neo-soul legend’s memorial service last month.

“My dad, he came down to Atlanta. He spent three weeks with me. Anything we ever missed, any questions I ever had, anything I wanted to ask him about — anything — we just had every conversation,” Twain recalled. “Every laugh and every moment, man. It really just cleared my spirit, man. That’s the time I needed him the most ever. He stood right there.”

Twain explained how he gained a ton of clarity following his father’s funeral. “My mom [Angie Stone] passed and it left me with a lot of questions,” the 28-year-old added. “After [D’Angelo’s] funeral, I gained a lot of answers to things.”

Twain, a rapper and singer in his own right, is the eldest child of D’Angelo, who has two younger siblings: 26-year-old Imani and 15-year-old Morocco.

D’Angelo died at 51 years old following a battle with cancer on Oct. 14. “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” his family said in a statement to Billboard. “After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, Oct. 14, 2025.”

“We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind,” the statement continued. “We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”

There was an outpouring of tributes from the music community, including heartfelt messages from Doja Cat, Tyler, the Creator, Jill Scott, The Alchemist and DJ Premier.

Sharon Osbourne struggling to sleep alone since Ozzy’s death

12 November 2025

Sharon Osbourne has struggled to sleep alone since her husband Ozzy Osbourne died.

Sharon Osbourne is mourning husband Ozzy

The 73-year-old matriarch was left devastated when her beloved spouse died in July aged 76 and she and her children Jack and Kelly Osbourne have now released the first episode of their The Osbournes podcast in over a year to honour the late rocker and reflect on their own grief.

The trio recorded the episode sitting around a large wooden table covered in magazines featuring the Black Sabbath frontman, and Sharon admitted:

“I hate going to bed at night.”

Kelly said: “I mean, I slept with you for the first two months so that you weren’t on your own. But then I felt like you needed some space.

“I wake up and for the first three seconds I feel normal. And then I remember everything. Mornings are the hardest for me.

“What is the morning? Because it happened in the morning. And I used to spend most of my time with Dad in the morning.”

The 41-year-old star admitted she didn’t realise just how “horrible” it would feel to lose her beloved dad, who had been in poor health for years before his death from a heart attack.

She tearfully said: “I never realised just how horrible grief is. I never knew I was capable of loving somebody so much and missing somebody so much. I just, I never thought there’d be a day where he wouldn’t be here.”

Sharon asked: “But then how blessed are you to have had a dad like him?”

Kelly noted her dad would “hate” to see her crying and admitted she has taken comfort from her three-year-old son Sidney, who she has with rocker fiance Sid Wilson.

She said: “I’m just so grateful that Sidney got to meet him. And that they had such a special little relationship.

“If it wasn’t for my baby boy…”

Father-of-four Jack agreed: “Having the kids has been a huge help.”

The 40-year-old TV personality has found some positives in his grief.

He explained: “It is both horrible and beautiful in the way that it forces you to unpack and examine things. Like, yeah, it sucks that he’s gone, but also, for me, it has led to a huge amount of gratitude and love and like really cherishing moments that at the time you take for granted.”

The public outpouring of grief for the Paranoid hitmaker has been “so helpful” to his family, but Sharon admitted she doesn’t think Ozzy would have realised how much he meant to people.

Kelly said: “The outpouring of love has been so helpful to us. I never could have even imagined it to be as helpful as it has been to know that we’re not alone in our grief, in our sadness and that the rest of the world loved him as much as we did…

“I haven’t seen an outpouring like that since Princess Diana died. I didn’t expect it.”

Sharon added: “Ozzy, he wouldn’t believe it. He wouldn’t. He didn’t realise how much he was loved and that was his beauty because he never took it for granted from anyone. He never took it for granted I’m this, I’m that. He had no idea.”

Death Unearth ’90s Madonna Cover From Late Frontman Chuck Schuldiner

by jummy84 November 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Since Death’s Chuck Schuldiner passed away in 2001 from a brain tumor, the metal band have raged on his honor, along with many tribute bands doing the same. Yesterday, though, the group came across a ’90s Madonna cover featuring the late vocalist and guitarist.

“Found this today going through some things,” the caption on the official Death Facebook page reads. “Chuck recorded this in the early stages of his battle with cancer, I remember it well. Chuck sitting in his bedroom with his stealth and a drum machine. I’m not sure how many people outside of the family and a few friends have heard this but it’s all yours. Chuck’s version of Madonna’s 1998 single ‘Frozen.'”

The track comes from Ray Of Light, and the goup definitely took creative liberty with their rendition, doubling its three-minute running time and using it to shred on animated guitars. Watch the surprisingly high quality video of the song playing in a car here.

Cleto Escobedo, the beloved Jimmy Kimmel Live! bandleader of Cleto and the Cletones, died on November 11, 2025. He was 59. Jimmy Kimmel was the one to break the news in a heartbreaking statement, encouraging others to “cherish your friends and please keep Cleto’s wife, children and parents in your prayers.”

“Early this morning, we lost a great friend, father, son, musician and man, my longtime bandleader Cleto Escobedo III,” Kimmel wrote via Instagram alongside a picture of Escobedo on stage. “To say that we are heartbroken is an understatement. Cleto and I have been inseparable since I was 9 years old. The fact that we got to work together every day is a dream neither of us could ever have imagined would come true.”

Below, learn about Cleto and what happened to the beloved bandleader from Kimmel’s show.

What Happened to Cleto Escobedo?

Kimmel did not elaborate on what happened to his friend and bandleader, Escobedo.

How Did Cleto Escobedo Die?

It’s still unclear how Escobedo died at the time of publication. Kimmel only noted in his announcement that Escobedo died on the morning of November 11, 2025.

What Did the Cletones Say About Cleto’s Death?

The band, which also consists of Escobedo’s father, Cleto Escobedo Sr., Jeff Babko, Toshi Yanagi, Jimmy Earl and Jonathan Dresel, has not publicly addressed their lead musician’s death at the time of publication.

How Long Did Jimmy Kimmel & His Bandleader Cleto Know Each Other?

As previously noted, Kimmel and Escobedo have known each other since they were kids. The late saxophone player grew up near the comedian in Las Vegas.

Calling Escobedo a “child prodigy,” Kimmel recalled his friend’s immense talent back in 2015. “Like, the whole school would gather to watch. He’d get standing ovations. It was a crazy thing,” Kimmel said in 2015, per ABC7.

Since Escobedo became a professional musician and went on to tour with talent such as Earth, Wind and Fire, Paula Abdul and Marc Anthony. This, in turn, helped him land his spot on Kimmel’s late-night talk show in 2003.

“And I just thought, oh my God, you know? I have a talk show. Cleto has to be my bandleader,” Kimmel previously said, per ABC7, while remembering how “nervous” he was if Disney told him, “We don’t want your friend to be the bandleader.”

“So, I took the president of ABC to see him play with his band, and he loved it,” Kimmel said. “Of course I wanted great musicians, but I wanted somebody I had chemistry with. And there’s nobody in my life I have better chemistry with than him.”

“Maut Mubarak Ho Meena Kumari,” When Nargis Hearbreakingly Revealed How Dharmendra Was The Reason For Pakeezah Actress’s Slow Death!

"Meena Kumari, Maut Mubarak Ho," When Nargis Hearbreakingly Celebrated Pakeezah Actress's Death!
Nargis Celebrated The Death Of Superstar Meena Kumari For A Heartbreaking Reason! (Photo Credit – Instagram/YouTube)

Meena Kumari and her tragic end is one of the most heartbreaking stories from the dark chapters of Bollywood. A superstar, who died young, at the age of 38, after she completely immersed herself in alcohol and addiction. Reports say that when she died, her family could not afford even Rs 3500 to pay the hospital. The doctor who treated her settled the bills so that the family could take the dead body!

When the Pakeezah actress died, her contemporary and close friend Nargis congratulated her in an open letter, which was the most heartbreaking tribute by a contemporary to her friend and competitor! In the letter, Sanjay Dutt’s mother also recalled what pushed her friend towards death!

Maut Mubarak Ho Meena!

On Meena Kumari’s death, Nargis wrote an open letter, which was published in an Urdu magazine and it read, “Maut Mubarak Ho Meena, Meena, today your baaji congratulates you on your death and asks you to never step into this world again. This place is not meant for people like you.”

The Traumatic Marriage

The superstar and Kamal Amrohi fell in love and got married but it turned into a traumatic one owing to the actress’s stardom and the director’s decline as a creative spirit. So much so that once Nargis had to interfere and ask Kamal Amrohi‘s assistant to stop using the actress for their financial gain since she was suffering a lot!

Meanwhile, a slap incident made her move out of her husband’s home, but she drowned herself in alcohol, which landed her in a hospital. Nargis‘s open letter mentions how she tried cajoling Meena out of this addiction, but she could not!

Dharmendra – The Man She Loved!

The letter in the Urdu magazine was translated and published in Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai: Urdu Memoirs of Cinema Legends by Yasir Abbasi, which has been excerpted in an article by Indian Express. The letter further said, “If Meena has ever loved anyone passionately, the person is Dharmendra. If Meena ever turned crazy in love for someone, it was Dharmendra.” However, after a misunderstanding, Dharmendra walked out of Meena Kumari’s life, and “Slowly, she began to inch towards death,” said the letter.

Meena Kumari died on March 31, 1972, at the age of 38, after struggling with liver cirrhosis. Meanwhile, Nargis passed away nearly a decade later on May 3, 1981, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Dharmendra, on the other hand, continued to have a successful career in Bollywood, alongside a loving marriage of 43 years with Hema Malini. The actor was recently admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital. Following his hospitalization, a rumor suggested that the veteran passed away. However, his family members confirmed that he is stable and recovering.

Social media personality Michael Willis Heard, known for coining the popular “Yes King” meme, died, according to multiple outlets, which referred to a statement from a family member. Other content creators also paid tribute to Heard while grieving his death.

Here is what we know about the late social media personality known for his “Yes King” meme and his death.

Who Was Michael Willis Heard? About the ‘Yes King’ Meme

Heard was famous for sharing a positive outlook on life with his social media followers in addition to creating the viral “Yes King” meme.

Did the ‘Yes King’ Meme Creator Die?

According to Heard’s daughter, yes, he died. Multiple outlets have cited the Facebook user known as Mykel Crumbie, who announced his death on November 9, 2025.

“My daddy man.. I’ma miss you so much king this is crazy to me and you really messing up the family with this one [sic],” she wrote in a Facebook post that day. “IDC who didn’t love my father and didn’t like his lifestyle and WISHED DEATH ON HIM! THIS WAS THE GREATEST MAN TO LIVE ON THIS EARTH! The love and compassion he had is unmatched.”

Heard’s daughter added that he “came to everyone with LOVE and touch soooo many lives [sic]!” calling herself a “blessed girl so blessed to have him as MY DAD!”

“This is so hard for us as a family but this too shall pass and we will grow stronger,” she concluded. “I just know my dad is up in glory having an amazing time. I love you daddy ima see you again dont worry about me [sic].”

How Did ‘Yes King’ Personality Michael Willis Heard Die?

No one from Heard’s family has revealed his cause of death, though rumors about his health spread on social media. Fellow social media personality Dayvon Augustus paid tribute to Heard in an Instagram post, claiming they had known each other for years and that Heard allegedly suffered from an asthma attack and a subsequent heart attack before he died.

“RIP, Michael Willis Heard! Some of you may know him as a content creator of many sorts, he was a life coach as a well as a pastor,” Augustus wrote alongside photos of Heard, including one of him appearing to be in a hospital bed. “I’ve known him for years and got news this morning that he died from [an] asthma attack that led to a heart attack that led to him being brain dead. As shocked as I am about this news I also know this is one man who lived his life as freely and fully as possible so I have no doubts that he has transitioned without many regrets!”

Augustus added that So DebNair, Heard’s husband, informed him of the “Yes King” creator’s death. “Light & Love to his family and his ex-husband @SoDebNair, who broke the news to me this morning! MAN! Life is literally crazy!” The caption also included a note claiming that Heard’s daughter “provided” images of him in the hospital.

As for DebNair, he referred to Heard as his husband in his own Instagram post, which read, “My heart is so broken, I don’t have alot of words but my husband passing away is insane. Thank you for everyone for reaching out. If you know, you know. I’ll miss him forever.”
