Indie Music Leaders Launch UMG-Downtown Deal Opposition Campaign

by jummy84 October 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Leaders across indie music are once again teaming up to speak out against Universal Music Group’s proposed acquisition of Downtown Music Holdings with a new campaign.

Dubbed “100 Voices,” the campaign argues that the deal, which is currently the subject of an investigation by the European Commission, “poses a serious threat to competition, diversity and fair access across the music industry,” according to a press release. Downtown operates distribution platforms FUGA and CD Baby, the royalty accounting service Curve and the indie publishing admin services provider Songtrust, among others — all of which are heavily utilized by independent labels and artists.

The “100 Voices” publication was delivered in person on Thursday (Oct. 2) to Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity. Dombrovskis is leading the current phase of the investigation into the proposed deal, the results of which were originally slated for release in December but are now set to be revealed sometime next year (the probe was halted last month because documents were not submitted in a timely manner, according to the Commission.

This isn’t the first time the indie music community has rallied against the proposed acquisition. As soon as the deal was announced, independent companies and organizations including IMPALA, Beggars Group, IMPF, A2IM and Secretly Group began releasing statements asking regulators to block it. In July, more than 200 indie music execs from companies including Better Noise, Dead Oceans, Hopeless Records and Sub Pop published an open letter urging the European Commission to enter a “Phase II” investigation of the deal. “A concentration of this magnitude would narrow the range of voices, styles and cultures that reach the public,” the letter read. “It would give UMG further power to shape digital services, influence monetization thresholds and extract more, at the expense of the independent sector.”

In response to the outpouring of concern, Nat Pastor and JT Meyers — co-CEOs of Virgin Music Group, the UMG subsidiary that would acquire Downtown — sent a memo to staff that rebutted some of the indie community’s claims, stating in part: “Our motivation for the merger and our excitement about it are rooted in this singular opportunity: by combining Downtown’s and Virgin’s unique capabilities, the unified company will offer an even more robust and flexible suite of services to independent labels everywhere.”

Pieter van Rijn

Downtown Music CEO Pieter van Rijn also blasted the opposition in an open letter published in September, in which he claimed “misinformation” about the pending acquisition was designed to “undermine our longstanding and trusted client relationships” while ignoring the ways in which the deal would more effectively serve independents.

A press release announcing the “100 Voices” campaign, unveiled on Friday (Oct. 3), includes quotes from several indie executives arguing against the deal, which can be found below. A full list of signees is available at the campaign’s website.

Martin Mills, founder/chairman, Beggars: “We are now operating in an industry increasingly shaped by global corporations, whose dominance over digital infrastructure effects everything from artist visibility to revenue. This ongoing consolidation amounts to a systematic weakening of the independent sector’s ability to compete on fair terms.”

Bruno Roze, founder/artistic director, I Love You Records: “If Downtown’s services fall under UMG’s control, we fear higher costs, reduced access, and the loss of independence that small labels like ours need to survive. This deal risks creating a music ecosystem where one corporation controls too much of the infrastructure, leaving less room for diversity, innovation, and fair competition. For the long-term health of independent music, it should be blocked.”

Downtown Music

Nacho García Vega, president, International Artist Organisation: “Artists rely on a pluralistic infrastructure that reflects diversity in both ownership and access. Allowing UMG to consolidate control over a major independent player would move the industry further toward a two-tier system, where market dominance — not creative merit — determines visibility and success.”

Francesca Trainini, vp, PMI Italia: “This is a crucial moment for the future of Europe’s music landscape. The Commission’s intervention shows these concerns are being taken seriously. The risks of reinforcing the leader and losing a big competitor are clearer today than ever before. Remedies would be ineffective in today’s music market. We trust the Commission will take the necessary steps to protect competition, access, and diversity across the sector.”

Birte Wiemann, project manager, Cargo Records Germany: “When unchecked growth disrupts an ecosystem, diversity suffers. If UMG acquires Downtown, entire independent structures are absorbed, giving UMG new power over DSPs and data that weakens independents. The result is less diversity, more homogenised output, and a cultural niche increasingly sidelined.”

No simulcast deal for Jays’ game Friday night

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

TORONTO – Baseball fans in Canada should not expect a repeat of a deal that allowed Sportsnet to air a simulcast of Apple TV’s Friday Night Baseball broadcast that featured the Toronto Blue Jays last week.

As a result of the agreement, the streamer was given the rights for Friday’s game between the Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays.

“Apple has it exclusively,” a Sportsnet spokesperson said Thursday afternoon in an email.

Sportsnet, the Canadian team’s domestic rights-holder, reached a deal with the Blue Jays, Apple TV and Major League Baseball ahead of last Friday’s game between Toronto and Kansas City.

That matchup had the potential to be a playoff clincher for the Blue Jays. The Royals pounded Toronto 20-1 that night but the Blue Jays would secure a post-season berth two days later.

Entering Thursday’s games, there was a scenario that could have seen the Blue Jays move into a potential clinch situation for the American League East Division title on Friday.

But when Toronto defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-1 and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3, the Blue Jays’ magic number was trimmed to three. That left Saturday as the earliest possible clinch date.

Instead of airing on Sportsnet, Friday’s Jays-Rays matchup will only be shown on Apple TV+, leaving non-subscribers without a viewing option.

There were no plans to change that arrangement, a baseball source confirmed Thursday.

Almost all Blue Jays games air on Sportsnet, but a handful of Toronto games throughout the 162-game season air on Apple TV+ as part of the streamer’s partnership with MLB.

Toronto is looking to win the East crown for the first time since 2015. The Blue Jays hold the tiebreaker over the Yankees in the event they finish the regular season on Sunday with the same record.

The top two division winners will earn byes to the best-of-five division series. The other four AL playoff teams will play in best-of-three wild-card series.

Toronto made the playoffs three times between 2020 and ’23 but was swept in the wild-card series each time.

The Blue Jays haven’t won a post-season game since 2016. Toronto’s last World Series title came in 1993.

Sportsnet and the Blue Jays are owned by Rogers Communications.

A similar scenario exists this week. Depending on results from Thursday’s games, the Blue Jays could have a chance on Friday to win the American League East Division title for the first time since 2015.

Entering play Thursday, the Blue Jays had a magic number of four to clinch the East. Toronto was tied with the New York Yankees for first place but the Blue Jays hold the tiebreaker advantage.

Chances of a Friday clinch scenario were certainly possible but appeared unlikely.

A Toronto win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night, coupled with a New York loss to the Chicago White Sox, would trim the Blue Jays’ magic number to two.

However, the slumping Blue Jays had dropped six of their last seven games entering the series finale against the Red Sox, who were only three games back in the East.

The Yankees, meanwhile, were looking to complete a three-game sweep of the lowly White Sox, who are in last place in the American League.

On Friday, the Blue Jays-Rays game will start a couple minutes after the start of the Yankees-Orioles matchup. If Toronto entered that game with a magic number of two, the Blue Jays would claim the East crown if they beat the Rays and if New York lost to Baltimore.

The regular season continues through Sunday.

The top two division winners will earn byes to the best-of-five division series. The other four AL playoff teams will play in best-of-three wild-card series.

Kehlani Slams A.I. Artist Xania Monet’s $3 Million Record Deal

by jummy84 September 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Kehlani is pushing back against artificial intelligence taking over music after Xania Monet, a virtual artist, inked a $3,000,000 deal with Hallwood Media and already landed spots on the Billboard charts.

According to Billboard Pro, poet Telisha Jones is the creative force behind the A.I.-powered sensation. To bring Xania to life, Jones leaned on Suno technology, the same platform currently tied up in copyright battles with major record companies. When Jones took a Zoom meeting with record executives earlier this month, she landed on the 3 mil deal from former Interscope executive Neil Jacobson’s Hallwood Media.

“She’s been writing poetry for a long time,” Jones’ manager, Romel Murphy, told Billboard. “90 percent of her lyrics are her own true stories, and the other 10 percent are inspired by the stories of her friends and community. What’s making the songs catch is not a hook and a bridge and a catchy chant, it’s just the lyrics, and they are pure.”

Kehlani, however, isn’t buying into the hype. The Grammy-nominated singer argued that Jones’ poetry could’ve found its own lane without taking from rising musicians. “Maybe she should write a poetry book. I love to support a good poet. I cannot paint. So I’m not going to create A.I. paintings and sell them, taking up space from up-and-coming painters,” she said. “This is the antithesis of art. Just because you can don’t mean you should.”

Despite the controversy, Monet made her Billboard debut the week of Sept. 20, entering at No. 25 on Emerging Artists and No. 21 on Hot Gospel Songs with “Let Go, Let God.” Another single, “How Was I Supposed to Know,” hit No. 1 on R&B Digital Song Sales, No. 3 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales, and No. 22 on overall Digital Song Sales.

Kehlani, however, doubled down on her criticism in a social post. “This is so beyond out of our control. Nothing and no one on Earth will ever be able to justify A.I. to me,” she wrote. “I’m genuinely sad for people who are trying to come up and their space is being taken up by a computer program. I.T., not she, is taking all of the data it’s collected on us and what we want, and is tailoring to us. Even down to the voice.”

She closed with the reminder: “Art is not a money grab. Music means something significant to culture, to humanity, to people. Me personally, I’m going to value it that way for the rest of my life.”

See Kehlani passionately speak on A.I. entering the music space above and listen to Xania Monet below.

Sportsnet and Apple TV reach deal for Jays game

TORONTO – Baseball fans will now be able to watch the Toronto Blue Jays’ potential playoff clincher Friday night in Kansas City on the team’s regular broadcast home in Canada.

Sportsnet, the club’s Canadian rights-holder, said Thursday it had struck a deal with Apple TV to simulcast the game on Rogers airwaves.

Entering Thursday’s games, Toronto’s magic number to clinch a post-season berth was three.

Before the deal, only Apple TV subscribers would have been able to watch the Blue Jays’ series opener against the Royals, which could seal Toronto’s spot in the 12-team post-season.

“This is a really exciting time of year for Blue Jays fans, and we wanted to try and find a way for Canadians to watch Friday’s game on Sportsnet, especially at this pivotal moment of the season,” a Rogers spokesperson said in an email. “In working with the Blue Jays, Major League Baseball and Apple TV, glad we found a way.”

Michael Jordan’s Son Marcus Cuts Deal To Settle DUI Case, Must Write 250-Word Apology Letter To Arresting Officer

An apology can go a long way.

#MarcusJordan, son of NBA legend #MichaelJordan, has entered a pretrial diversion program in Orange County, Florida, to resolve his DUI case stemming from a February arrest. Per the agreement, signed on Sept. 12, he must complete 50 hours of community service, install an interlock device on his vehicle, submit to random drug testing, give a $1,000 charitable donation, and write a 250-word apology letter to the arresting officer

If Marcus fulfills these requirements within 12 months, prosecutors have agreed to dismiss charges of DUI, ketamine possession, and resisting arrest without violence. The case originated from an incident where Marcus’ Lamborghini SUV became stuck on train tracks while he was allegedly under the influence. Jordan has since publicly stated that he is sober and committed to making amends.

Shraddha Kapoor is one of the most loved actresses in Bollywood. Known for her charisma, incredible talent, and down-to-earth nature, Shraddha continues to win hearts to date. With a career spanning over two decades, she has proved her worth as a versatile actor in the industry. Let’s look back at the time when Shraddha Kapoor reflected on struggling with anxiety. Read on to know more

Shraddha Kapoor On Struggling With Anxiety

In a chat with Pinkvilla, Shraddha opened up about battling anxiety for over six years. She shared, “I didn’t even know what anxiety was. We didn’t know about it for a very long time. It was just after Aashiqui, where I had this physical manifestation of anxiety. There’s this pain happening where there was no physiological diagnosis. We got so many tests done, but there was nothing wrong with me in the doctor’s report. It’s bizarre because I kept thinking why I was getting that pain. Then I kept asking myself why that is happening.”

Shraddha Kapoor Says To Embrace It

“Today, it’s something that I still deal with but it has become so much better than what it was. Also, somewhere you have to embrace it. You have to accept it as a part of yourself and approach it with a lot of self-love. That made a big difference. A very very big difference because I think one of the most important things is to try to understand yourself. Whether you have anxiety or not, you always need to understand who you are or what you stand for,” Shraddha concluded.

More About Shraddha Kapoor

Born to actors Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kolhapure, Shraddha Kapoor marked her Bollywood debut in 2010 with the film Teen Patti. The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, and R. Madhavan, among others. Some of her notable films include Tu Jhooti Main Makkaar, Stree, and Chhichhore.
