Kantara Chapter 1 advance booking is going at a breakneck pace, indicating a bumper opening for the Rishab Shetty-starrer prequel.

Rishab Shetty’s heavily anticipated film, Kantara Chapter 1, is releasing in theatres this Thursday (October 2) on the occasion of Dussehra. The film is a prequel to Kantara, the 2021 blockbuster, and hence, carries a lot of buzz. The original film was a huge hit not just in Karnataka, but in north India as well. And the prequel seems to be going even bigger.

Rishab Shetty plays the lead in and directs Kantara Chapter 1, a prequel to the 2022 film Kantara.

The advance booking for Kantara Chapter 1 opened on Sunday, four days before the film’s release. In a little over 24 hours, the pre-sales for day 1 have touched ₹5.7 crore gross, selling 1.7 lakh tickets already. This breakneck pace of ticket sales has already ensured that Kantara Chapter 1 will have a bigger opening than Kantara, which opened at just ₹2 crore in India back in 2022.

It’s still three days to go for the release of Kantara: Chapter 1, and the film is already outpacing the advance booking collections of recent big releases like Pawan Kalyan’s OG and Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2. Neither of these films had touched ₹5 crore in advance bookings three days before the release. Kantara: Chapter 1 is also outperforming Yash’s KGF: Chapter 1 in pre-sales. The 2019 film was the highest-grossing Kannada film for three years, and the first from the language to cross ₹250 crore worldwide gross.

Kantara Chapter 1 should look to not just surpass but comfortably beat the ₹400-crore gross of the first Kantara, given its hype and scale. And it has taken a good start in that direction with healthy advance bookings. So far, the bulk of the sales have been in Kannada, but as more screens open up in the Hindi belt over Monday and Tuesday, the numbers should pick up. As of now, Kantara Chapter 1 has earned ₹36 lakh in advance bookings in Hindi, and just over ₹5 lakh in Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam combined. The rest of the collections have come in the original Kannada version.

Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, Kantara Chapter 1 explores the origins of the mythology and story told in Kantara. Set ten centuries before the original film, Chapter 1 stars Rishab Shetty, but in a different role this time. Joining him in the cast are Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Devaiah. The film releases across India on 2 October.

Sujeeth’s action thriller has collected more than Rs 131 crore worldwide, which is Pawan Kalyan’s maiden Rs 100 crore opener and the 15th Indian film to reach this mark on its opening day.

A highlight achievement for They Call Him OG is its record-breaking domestic paid premieres, which grossed an unbelievable Rs 30.50 crore in India alone. Most of this came from the Telugu states, highlighting Pawan Kalyan’s huge fan base. This broke earlier preview records set by top films like Chennai Express, Stree 2, Pushpa 2, and Hari Hara Veera Mallu.

The total global premiere gross collection for They Call Him OG amounts to about Rs 63.30 crore—a feat unheard of before for Pawan Kalyan. All eyes now are on the coming Telugu movie The Raja Saab, which is also predicted to take OG’s record-breaking feat to task.

According to the report, Homebound earned ₹30 lakh on Friday. It collected ₹50 lakh nett in India as per early estimates on Saturday. This is much less than Ishaan’s film Dhadak, which earned ₹11.04 crore on day two, and Phone Bhoot, which collected ₹2.75 crore as per Sacnilk.com. Vishal’s Salaam Venky had opened at ₹55 lakh on day two of its release.

The Hindustan Times review of the film read, “Vishal Jethwa and Ishaan Khatter bring vulnerability to their roles, their chemistry as childhood friends fully convincing. Ishaan’s emotional breakdown hits hard in one scene, while Vishal’s turn in the climax lingers long after. Janhvi Kapoor delivers an earnest performance, while Shalini Vatsa, as Chandan’s mother, quietly grounds the film with grace.”

“Overall, Homebound is not just a film about friendship, caste, or migration. It is a reminder of humanity brought to its knees by a pandemic, and of the invisible lives that bore the heaviest weight in our country,” it added.

Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound has been selected as the official Oscar entry from India in the Best International Feature category. Homebound is inspired by journalist Basharat Peer’s article Taking Amrit Home, also titled (A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway).

It portrays the childhood friendship between a Muslim and a Dalit who chase a police job that promises them the dignity they have long been denied due to their surnames. Martin Scorsese serves as an executive producer on the film, which is produced by Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla. According to officials, the Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested the accused, identified as Dilip Chaudhary, from West Bengal. He allegedly posed as an associate of dreaded gangsters Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar while threatening Sharma. Police revealed that Kapil Sharma received seven threatening calls between September 22 and 23, along with intimidating videos. The threats were made from different numbers, demanding the comedian pay a hefty ransom.

Following Sharma’s complaint, the accused was tracked down in West Bengal, taken into custody, and brought to Mumbai for interrogation. In a major breakthrough in the suspected ₹60-crore fraud case, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has found that businessman Raj Kundra is suspected to have diverted about ₹15 crore into a bank account of a company belonging to his wife, Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty. The case involves Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, a defunct celebrity-biased teleshopping channel floated by Shetty, Kundra, and actor Akshay Kumar.

Official sources say the ₹15 crore transaction is under the scanner as the investigators feel the amount is way too high for what may normally be paid as charging for advert and promotional services. The EOW, therefore, is going to call for questioning Shilpa Shetty to ascertain the validity and intent of the transaction. She will be questioned on billing entries and on reconciling the cost of advertising the company allegedly incurred.

The EOW also added that some important documents remain to be filed by the Resolution Professionals (RPs) who were appointed for dealing with the finances of the company. These RPs were earlier called for questioning but have not presented all necessary documents, hampering the investigation process.

The investigation also revealed that a part of the total ₹60 crore funds was allegedly diverted to sister companies, which is indicative of another financial mismanagement and diversion of funds. Sources opined that the flow of funds could have been a deliberate plan to mask financial trail and keep the regulators in the dark.

Another important disclosure in the case relates to complainant Deepak Kothari, director at Lotus Capital Finance Services. He charged that he was deprived of an assured 26% equity stake in Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd. Investigators are suspecting this could be a tactical decision to steer clear of reporting shareholding trends to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), violating compulsory disclosure norms.

Raj Kundra, who has been in the EOW’s radar, was questioned for more than five hours on September 15 at an unknown location to avoid media attention. “We recorded the statement of Kundra today and will call him again next week. Several witnesses are still to be identified,” an official stated.

As the probe goes deeper, further high-profile grilling can be anticipated. With Shilpa Shetty set to be called in and further rounds of interrogation for Kundra, the case continues to attract a lot of attention.

The Salman Khan-hosted reality show Bigg Boss 19, famous for its fights, drama, and controversies, has now landed in legal trouble after the makers allegedly used two songs – Katrina Kaif’s Chikni Chameli and Imran Khan’s Dhat Tere Ki – without proper authorisation.

According to Mid-day India, Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) has sent a legal notice to Bigg Boss 19 makers, citing that the show has used songs – Chikni Chameli from Agneepath and Dhat Tere Ki from Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in episode 11 of the show, but without permission.

The songs were used in episode 11 that streamed on September 3. PPL India has accused Endemol Shine India, which backs the popular reality show, of using these sound recordings without securing the “mandatory public performance licence”. The notice, dated September 19, was served by advocate Hiten Ajay Wasan and names the production house’s directors – Thomas Gousset, Nicolas Chazarain, and Deepak Dhar – as responsible parties.

“Both songs are licensed to Sony Music Entertainment India, one of the 450-plus music labels whose public performance rights are exclusively administered by PPL. PPL argues that because Endemol Shine India did not obtain a licence under Section 30 of the Copyright Act 1957, the use amounts to a ‘wilful infringement’,” said a source from the legal team.

The organisation has called upon the show’s producers to pay ₹2 crore in damages, along with the requisite licence fees. They also issued a cease-and-desist notice from using its sound recordings without authorisation.

Endemol Shine India and streaming platform JioHotstar are yet to react to the news.
