Martin Freeman’s crime drama with Downton Abbey star leaving Netflix

by jummy84 September 15, 2025
written by jummy84

ITV crime drama A Confession is leaving Netflix very soon, meaning viewers have only a matter of weeks left to watch it on the streamer.

The six-part series, which was released in 2019 and is written by Jeff Pope, is based on the real-life murder of Sian O’Callaghan, who went missing in 2011 after a night out.

Martin Freeman (Sherlock) stars as Detective Steve Fulcher, the real-life police officer who went to great lengths in order to get justice to prevail, while Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey) appears as Sian’s mother, Elaine Pickford.

Alongside Freeman and Finneran, the drama also stars Imelda Staunton, Joe Absolom, Daniel Betts and Charlie Cooper.

A Confession is leaving Netflix on 30th September 2025, but is still available on ITVX, where it looks set to remain for the foreseeable.

Siobhan Finneran plays Sian’s mother.

Liam O’Callaghan previously opened up to RadioTimes.com about how he worked with writer Jeff Pope to tell the story of his sister Sian’s disappearance and murder.

He said: “As soon as we’d seen what Jeff had produced, we were happy with what was produced. It shows Sian as a person, it doesn’t focus on Sian’s life being taken.”

He added: “Which was important, for us. Because we didn’t really want that to be a focus, we didn’t want to have to envisage that or see it played out. So the fact that it steers away from that and just shows Sian as a person, and then also tackles Steven Fulcher and his actions – it’s a good piece of work.”

A Confession is available to stream now on Netflix until 30th September. Sign up for Netflix from £5.99 a month. Netflix is also available on Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream.

Donald Trump Dangerously Says Domestic Violence Isn’t A Real Crime

by jummy84 September 9, 2025
written by jummy84

On Monday (Sep. 8), Donald Trump gave a speech at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., where he shared his frustrations with local crime statistics still including incidents of domestic violence.

Trump bragged that his deployment of federal troops to the capital had transformed Washington from “the worst, the most violent city” into “a totally safe zone.” In his explanation, he claimed that the city was crime-free until domestic disputes were factored in.

“There’s no crime. They said crime is down 87 percent — no, no, no, it’s more than 87 percent, [it’s] virtually nothing,” he told the crowd. “Much lesser things, things that take place in the home, they call crime, you know — they’ll do anything they can to find something. If a man has a little fight with the wife, they say, ‘This was a crime, see,’ so now I can’t claim 100 percent. But we are a safe city.”

It isn’t surprising that Trump feels that way about DV cases, given his own history. Reportedly, Trump has had more than a dozen women accusing him of harassment, abuse, or sexual assault over the years — allegations he’s consistently denied.

Trump’s remarks came amid a federal appeals court upholding an $83 million defamation judgment awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s. That ruling follows a 2023 verdict finding Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll, as well as last year’s conviction on 34 felony counts tied to falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 campaign.

Stormy Daniels (Stephanie Clifford) exits the United States District Court Southern District of New York for a hearing related to Michael Cohen, President Trump’s longtime personal attorney and confidante, April 16, 2018 in New York City.

A 2018 report from Mother Jones revealed how Trump allegedly engaged in an affair with Daniels (real name Stephanie Clifford) in 2006 and asked her to spank him with a copy of Forbes magazine. The issue was a 2006 cover of himself and children.

Reportedly, Democratic political consultant Andrea Dubé and others who worked with Daniels in 2009 backed up her claims. They recalled that “one time he made her sit with him for three hours watching Shark Week.”

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery teaser: Teaser is finally here, and Daniel Craig is back as the clever detective Benoit Blanc.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery teaser: The teaser for Netflix’s hit detective franchise’s third instalment is finally here, and Daniel Craig is back as the clever detective Benoit Blanc. The makers dropped the trailer on Monday, giving fans a first look at the third film in Rian Johnson’s popular mystery series.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery teaser: Daniel Craig and Josh O’Connor in a still from the film.

What is the teaser?

This time, Blanc is faced with what he calls ‘the impossible crime’, the murder of a Catholic priest, played by Josh Brolin, during Mass. The movie promises suspense, drama, and plenty of suspects. Alongside Craig, the cast includes Glenn Close, Cailee Spaeny, Kerry Washington, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Josh O’Connor, Andrew Scott, and Brolin himself.

The film recently had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September. Glenn Close, who also stars in the film, shared her excitement about the project when speaking to PEOPLE earlier in August 2024, calling it “one of the best experiences of my life.”

About the film

Daniel Craig also sports a new look for this film, with longer hair and a three-piece suit. This marks a fresh style for Benoit Blanc compared to his previous appearances in Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion (2022).

Wake Up Dead Man will open in select theatres on 26 November before streaming on Netflix from 12 December.

Channing Tatum in True Crime Story

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Plenty of crime films make breaking the law look glamorous, but few are as wholesome as “Roofman.” Director Derek Cianfrance (“Blue Valentine,” The Place Beyond the Pines”) focuses on the human element of his true-crime inspiration in this superficial crowd-pleaser, based on the life of a North Carolina man who escaped from prison after the series of fast-food heists that gave this film its title. He then proceeded to live in the bowels of a Toys “R” Us store for more than six months, before being caught again after committing another armed robbery at the same store where he had been hiding out.

It’s the kind of yarn that earns the description “stranger than fiction,” and the details of how Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum, gaunter than usual but just as toned) was able to build a makeshift life out of items scavenged from a toy store are fascinating. (This was in 2004, so a lot of “Spider-Man” merch was involved.) Unfortunately, however, “Roofman” also capitulates to the feel-good demands of Hollywood storytelling, leaving the pricklier aspects of Manchester’s story on the table. And the film is forgettable as a result.

'Rental Family'

Here, “the human element” means Jeffrey observing the everyday dramas and petty power struggles at Toys “R” Us through a series of baby monitors he cleverly mounts in the manager’s office, not the crushing irony of him hiding out in a store overflowing with the same plastic status symbols that made him an outlaw in the first place. (As we learn early on, the humiliation of not being able to buy his daughter a bike for her sixth birthday was the inciting incident of Jeffrey’s criminal career.) The latter is way too political for this particular film, which is true even as “Roofman” is overwhelmingly on Jeffrey’s side.

LaKeith Stanfield co-stars as Steve, Jeffrey’s old Army buddy who has a sideline in fake passports. At one point, Steve leaves for a tour of duty in Afghanistan, and picks right back up with his forgery business when he gets back. He does this not because he’s a greedy person, nor for the thrill of it; in the America in which these characters live, a little law-bending is just what you have to do to get by. “Roofman” expends little effort considering the deeper (and, to be fair, more depressing) implications of this reality; instead, it shrugs and says that it’s okay, because they’re really not bad guys deep down.

This is especially true for the character of Jeffrey, who Steve accuses of being a “bad criminal” because he cares too much about the people around him. Tatum does stretch his acting abilities in scenes where Jeffrey’s con-man charisma is underlaid with desperation and deception, but there’s nothing in Cianfrance and Kirt Gunn’s screenplay to seriously challenge Tatum’s persona as a leading man. The opening scene is downright charming, as Jeffrey breaks into a McDonald’s before opening and takes three employees hostage, insisting that they put on their coats before he locks them in the walk-in freezer so that they don’t get cold. The manager doesn’t have a coat that morning, so Jeffrey lends him his.

Making Jeffrey any less likable would completely sink the second half of “Roofman,” which slows the pace to a meander as Jeffrey begins a sweet romance with Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a single mom who works at the Toys “R” Us. There’s a world where it’s creepy for Jeffrey to court Leigh after secretly watching her for months, but again, this isn’t that kind of movie. Instead, Cianfrance simplifies another complicated dynamic as Leigh, her daughters, and the married couple (Ben Mendelsohn and Uzo Aduba) who preach at her church embrace Jeffrey — or, as they know him, “John Zorn” — with the open-hearted naiveté that only church people can have. If Leigh has any reservations about “John’s” sudden appearance from “New York City,” or his extremely fake-sounding job, she doesn’t express them. This isn’t a flaw in her character, but yet another symptom of a working-class exhaustion that’s present, but never addressed, in the story.

Tatum and Dunst have good romantic chemistry, although Dunst really shines when “Roofman” briefly gets both more serious and more artfully shot late in the film. Her disappointment at learning that, no, she can’t just have something good happen to her for once is devastating, and too little screen time is dedicated to it. It’s all part of a moral footnote that feels like an obligation — okay, fine, maybe it’s not cool to be a criminal, even if you are smart and charming and unusually agile — compared to the film’s comedic scenes. Of these, Peter Dinklage emerges as an underdog MVP as the store’s dickhead manager, particularly in a scene where he catches Jeffrey naked and showering in the men’s room sink. On the whole, however, “Roofman” is more of a slog than a romp, largely because of an extended 119-minute run time that still leaves many of its juiciest elements unexplored.

Buzz around “Roofman” will undoubtedly focus on its true-crime elements, as well as the reconstituted Toys “R” Us store where much of the film takes place. Nostalgia is one thing, but if you really think about it, there’s something perverse about taking the husk of a chain store driven to bankruptcy by leveraged buyouts and rebuilding it using money from a movie studio partially owned by a private equity firm to tell the life story of a man who, by his own recounting, became a thief because he couldn’t provide for his children by doing things “the right way.” The difference is, Jeffrey Manchester went to prison for what he did.

Grade: C+

“Roofman” premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Paramount will release the film in theaters on Friday, October 10.

True Crime Gets Fresh Angles as FilmRise Expands Portfolio

by jummy84 September 5, 2025

FilmRise has inked deals for two true crime series that will explore the psychological elements driving fatal crimes.

The streaming distributor will co-produce “Murder in Mind” with CBS AMC Networks U.K. and Blue Ant Studios, while “Pushed to Death” represents a partnership between FilmRise, CBS AMC Networks and All3Media International.

Both 10-episode series will receive different treatment across markets. “Pushed to Death” will air under that title in North America via FilmRise, while U.K. audiences will see the same content as “Fatal Fall: Murder or Accident” through CBS AMC Networks U.K. All3Media International will shop the show globally using the British title.

The deals give FilmRise North American exclusivity across all platforms for both projects, continuing the company’s strategy of building its true crime brand.

“FilmRise has a strong track record of delivering true crime that resonates with North American audiences,” said Jonitha Keymoore, senior VP of content acquisitions at Radial Entertainment. “Viewers expect fresh angles into the genre, and both series deliver. ‘Murder in Mind’ examines the psychology behind killers, while ‘Pushed to Death’ uncovers a shocking pattern of fatal falls.”

The programming fits alongside FilmRise’s existing crime slate, which includes “Killers: Caught on Camera” and “Murdered at First Sight.”

“Much like our other popular series ‘Killers: Caught on Camera’ and ‘Murdered at First Sight,’ we like to develop shows that take a different angle from what’s already out there, keeping audiences engaged,” Keymoore added. “‘Murder in Mind’ dives into the psychology of what might make a ‘murderer,’ while ‘Pushed to Death’ shines a light on a lesser-explored type of crime.”

Sam Rowden, VP of content team at AMC Networks International U.K., called the U.K. version “a gripping and emotionally charged series that explores the intriguing mysteries behind these tragic deaths.”

“We’re thrilled to co-produce with FilmRise and collaborate with Coming Up Roses and All3Media International to bring this powerful narrative to U.K. audiences,” Rowden said.

The first series focuses on criminal psychology, examining what drives ordinary people to commit murder through case studies featuring interviews with investigators and those who knew the perpetrators. Back 2 Back Productions will handle production.

The second series investigates deaths involving apparent falls from heights — examining whether victims were pushed from locations like balconies, cliffs and bridges. Coming Up Roses is producing, with Oliver Wright serving as executive producer and Matt Gillbe as series editor.

“Working with the fantastic teams at both the CBS AMC Networks U.K. Channels Partnership and FilmRise on this dynamic series has been a complete joy,” Wright said. “Beautifully and sensitively produced, with access to key voices, and featuring extraordinary archive, every episode of this series gets under your skin.”

All3Media International’s Rachel Job highlighted the central mystery element: “We are delighted to be working with the brilliant team at Coming Up Roses and to partner with AMC and FilmRise on this true crime series.”

“With its gripping central question — was it a fall or a push — the show delivers an incredible hook through which to explore compelling, edge-of-your-seat true crime stories that will resonate with audiences worldwide,” Job said.

FilmRise operates more than 600 FAST channels and maintains a content library exceeding 30,000 titles spanning multiple genres including established true crime series like “Forensic Files” and “Unsolved Mysteries.”

Neil Young Officially Releases Donald Trump Takedown “Big Crime”

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

As conspiracy theories swirl around his current health , Donald Trump hasn’t exactly had the best couple of days. Well, Neil Young is about to make it just a little bit worse as he officially releases his latest protest banger, “Big Crime,” to streaming services everywhere.

If you recall, Young and his band Chrome Hearts debuted the song in late August during their soundcheck at Chicago’s Huntington Bank Pavilion. (The show featured something of a “protest medley,” as “Big Crime” was slotted alongside songs like “Be the Rain,” “Southern Man,” “Ohio,” and “Sun Green.”) Check out the music video below, which is a bare-bones performance piece that captures as much ’60s-era defiance as that same era’s robust psychedelic vibes. “Big Crime’ is also available to download via the Neil Young Archives.

The stomping anthem calls to “clean the White House out” and takes direct aim at the Trump administration’s takeover of Washington, DC’s law enforcement: “Don’t want soldiers on our streets/ There’s big crime in DC at the White House,” Young sings.

In the arsenal of Young’s many potent protest jams, “Big Crime” feels like a proper standout. Admittedly, the lyrics (written out below) aren’t as verbose and mighty as, say, “Rockin’ in the Free World.” However, when you pair “Big Crime” with other recent takedowns like “Let’s Roll Again” and “If You’re a Fascist, Get a Tesla,” we see that Young is trading in some of that wit and nuance for a directness that the MAGA folk need to really get the message.

If you want to potentially stick it to Trump alongside the Canadian crooner, Young has a handful of dates for September. Grab your tickets here.

Neil Young goes after Trump in new protest song, ‘Big Crime’ – National

Legendary Canadian rocker Neil Young debuted a new song this week, titled Big Crime, which not-so-subtly takes aim at U.S. President Donald Trump.

Young played the new track criticizing the Trump administration at his show in Chicago with his band The Chrome Hearts on Wednesday, and later posted the song’s lyrics on his Neil Young Archives website.

“There’s big crime in D.C. at the White House,” the 79-year-old rock icon sings in the chorus. Other lyrics aimed at Trump but not mentioning the president by name include “don’t need no fascist rules, don’t want no fascist schools, don’t want no soldiers walking on the streets.”

“Got to get the fascists out, got to clean the White House out, don’t want soldiers on our streets,” Young sings.

He also takes Trump’s signature slogan, “Make America Great Again,” and repeats throughout the song, “No more great again.”

Young’s new song makes reference to Trump sending thousands of National Guard troops and federal law enforcement officials into Washington in a bid to fight the violent crime he claimed had strangled the city. Last week, Trump said he wants US$2 billion from Congress to beautify Washington as part of his crackdown on the city.

The development in Trump’s effort to override the law enforcement authority of state and local governments comes as he is considering expanding the deployments to other Democratic-led cities, including Baltimore, Chicago and New York.

Young, who is a Canadian-American dual citizen, has directly criticized Trump in the past. In May, he told Trump to stop “worrying” about what Bruce Springsteen and other celebrities think of him.

In a post on his website, Young told Trump he should focus on “saving America from the mess you made” instead of arguing with celebrities who have criticized him, like his recent feud with Springsteen.

“What are you worryin’ about man?” Young wrote in the post. “Bruce and thousands of musicians think you are ruining America. You worry about that instead of the dyin’ kids in Gaza. That’s your problem.

“I am not scared of you. Neither are the rest of us. You shut down FEMA when we needed it most. That’s your problem Trump. STOP THINKING ABOUT WHAT ROCKERS ARE SAYING.”

Young added that Taylor Swift “is right” and “so is Bruce.” (Swift was a subject of one of Trump’s Truth Social posts in May. He wrote: “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’”)

“You know how I feel. You are more worried about yourself than AMERICA,” Young added. “Wake up Trump!! Remember what the White House is?”

“You are forgetting your real job. You work for us. Wake up Republicans! This guy is out of control. We need a real president,” Young concluded his post.

Young’s post came after Trump escalated his feud with Springsteen, calling for a “major investigation” into the rock legend after Springsteen branded the Trump administration as “corrupt, incompetent and treasonous” during a concert in England.

In early April, the Harvest Moon singer voiced concern that he may not be allowed to re-enter the United States after his European tour due to his criticism of Trump.

Young spoke out about his fears in a post on his Neil Young Archives website.

“When I go to play music in Europe, if I talk about Donald J. Trump, I may be one of those returning to America who is barred or put in jail to sleep on a cement floor with an aluminum blanket,” the folk-rock icon wrote.

“If I come back from Europe and am barred, can’t play my USA tour, all of the folks who bought tickets will not be able to come to a concert by me,” he added. “That’s right folks, if you say anything bad about Trump or his administration, you may be barred from re-entering USA. If you are Canadian. If you are a dual citizen like me, who knows? We’ll all find that out together.”

As Young has done many times in the past, he did not hold back about his feelings on Trump in his post, writing, “If the fact that I think Donald Trump is the worst president in the history of our great country could stop me from coming back, what does that say for Freedom? I love America and its people and its music and its culture.… Remember Freedom of Speech?”

Inside The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox and More True Crime TV Dramas

However, Knox says the Hulu show goes beyond the final verdict.

“This series is not just a courtroom drama that ends when Amanda Knox gets out of prison,” the 38-year-old explained to The Hollywood Reporter in an Aug. 18 video. “That’s typically how you see these stories told. This story is really anchored in the long consequences of the trauma that happened in the courtroom and how a person rebuilds their life and rebuilds their faith in humanity by taking risks. There’s a story of me, Amanda, taking a big risk to have faith and trust in people again and the benefits of that and the costs of that.”

Teaming up with Monica Lewinsky—another public figure quite familiar with being at the center of a media storm—Knox was eager to share that piece of her journey.

“That’s why it’s so important to show the afterwards,” she added. “Once you’ve been labeled and diminished and buried as a human being, how do you emerge as a person who is more complex and has more value than what society gave you credit for?”

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premieres on Hulu Aug. 20. However, it’s hardly the first true crime case to inspire a based-on-real-events story. Check out the other IRL dramas that became must-see TV.
