Meghan Markle Faces New Controversy Over Alleged Non-Returned $1,695 Designer Dress from 2022 Photoshoot

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has once again found herself in the center of a controversy, this time involving a high-end designer gown worn during a 2022 magazine photoshoot. The issue resurfaced after Meghan appeared in a promo for her upcoming Netflix holiday special, With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration, wearing what appears to be the same emerald green, galvanized gown from the 2022 shoot.

The dress, reportedly valued at $1,695 (approx. ₹1.5 lakh), was originally borrowed for the photoshoot, according to multiple entertainment reports. The resurfacing of the gown in recent promotional content triggered online debate and speculation regarding fashion loan protocols and whether Meghan had permission to retain the piece. According to several media outlets, journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis discussed these claims on a podcast, stating that Meghan allegedly kept clothing and jewelry from a high-profile photoshoot without returning them.

However, no official confirmation has been provided by Meghan Markle, her team, or the magazine involved. Reports caution that the situation might stem from a simple misunderstanding. Some sources even argue that the allegations may be exaggerated, noting that royals often archive significant garments as part of their public image records. Social media users quickly identified the green gown in Meghan’s Netflix holiday promo as the same dress from the 2022 photoshoot.

This observation revived rumors that emerged last year, suggesting Meghan may have taken items from shoots without notice, claims that remain unverified. Another report suggested that Meghan took the dress without asking, based on comments attributed to Grigoriadis on Andrew Gold’s Heretics podcast. She was quoted expressing surprise, questioning why someone of Meghan’s financial standing, living in a $15 million Montecito mansion and reportedly worth $100 million, would retain items she could easily purchase.

Samay Raina’s digital show India’s Got Latent had become the talk of the internet shortly after its release. ‘Stranger Things’ Skirted Controversy & History At Season 5 Premiere

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

The world premiere of Stranger Things‘ fifth and final season Thursday night was a largely joyous affair for everyone involved (save for the time close to 1,000 invited guests had to spend cooped up in the Chinese Theatre with their phones locked as the screening started an hour late.)

The cast and creators smiled and posed for photos on the red carpet as they appeared to be enjoying each other’s company. That included stars Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour who hugged and shared a laugh in front of photographers.

The two were closely watched at the premiere, their every movement and word scrutinized, as their reunion came days after a Nov. 1 Daily Mail report that claimed that the British actress, who plays girl with supernatural abilities Eleven on the show, had filed a harassment and bullying complaint against Harbour, who portrays her adoptive father Jim.

The controversy, fueled by the silence by all parties involved and Harbour’s ex-wife Lily Allen’s recently released “revenge album,” threatened to overshadow the premiere. It didn’t happen, with the cast and creators presenting united front, Brown and Harbour arriving together, Netflix releasing video of them and Brown posting a joint photo on social.

Nobody addressed the accusations directly, with Brown and Harbour praising each other in separate interviews and co-creator Ross Duffer telling THR that “nothing matters more than just having a set where everyone feels safe and happy.”

According to sources, there was a tiff between Brown and Harbour, and she did complain about his behavior, however it may not have been as recent as the report suggested but earlier in the series’ run. It was dealt with, and there hadn’t been issues since, sources said.

After posing on the red carpet, Brown, Harbour and the rest of the cast took the stage inside the Chinese Theatre, introduced by the series’ creators, Matt and Ross Duffer.

The Duffer brothers, the series director/executive producer Shawn Levy and Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos and Chief Creative Officer Bela Bajaria spoke before the screening of the Season 5 premiere episode, all becoming emotional as they did.

“I was in a magical place 10 years ago when Stranger Things was pitched to Netflix,” Sarandos said, noting that while House of Cards put the streamer on the original series map, “our real moment was when we put on Stranger Things,” a show that “moved the culture.”

Stranger Things was the first hit produced and fully owned by Netflix (earlier standouts like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black came from outside studios), and its massive popularity turned it into a lucrative brand and merchandizing bonanza for the tech company.

The Duffer brothers thanked the people they considered to have played a crucial role in Stranger Things‘ success, including Dan Cohen, the former executive at Shawn Levy’s company who was the first to champion their script after many rejections, Levy who embraced it, Sarandos, who got it on the platform, and the fans who helped to make it into a world phenomenon. They also acknowledged Bajaria for her support of the show over its last two seasons.

The speeches made it seem like Sarandos was the one who took the Stranger Things pitch and greenlighted the series. As Chief Creative Officer at the time, Sarandos did have ultimate greenlight authority, and his role in Stranger Things‘ success is undeniable. There were others, too.

Several years ago, the Duffers presented a different version in an essay for Time Magazine about Cindy Holland, Netflix’s former head of English-language scripted originals under Sarandos.

“When we pitched Stranger Things to Netflix, we were told Cindy Holland was the key,” they wrote in 2018. “As it turns out, she’s also extremely difficult to read in a room. We left the pitch certain of only one thing: Cindy hated it. One day later, she greenlighted our show, and our lives changed.”

There was no mention of Holland in any of the on-stage remarks at the premiere. That is not unusual — it is standard Hollywood practice for executives to be erased once replaced. Still, an occasion such as the end of an extraordinary successful show could call for an exception.

Another detail from the on-stage remarks was not lost on the attendees. The Netflix executives made a point to introduce the Duffer brothers — who are set to leave the streamer in April for a film and TV deal at Paramount that will allow them to make theatrical features and reunite with Holland and another former Netflix exec involved in Stranger Things‘ ascend, Matt Thunell — as being “a big part of the Netflix family.”

Season 5 of Stranger Things premieres Nov. 26 with Part 1, followed by Part 2 on Dec. 25 and the finale on Dec. 31.

The Miss Universe Walkout Controversy, Explained

The Miss Universe Walkout Controversy, Explained

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Hold up. What is going on with the Miss Universe pageant? There was some sort of walkout? Because a man was being disrespectful to one of the contestants? Creating a genuine girl power moment that was captured on video? Consider us sat.

Let’s get into the Miss Universe pageant walkout, explained.

What happened?

In the now viral video, which you can still see on the Miss Universe Thailand Facebook page, Thai pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil lectures the contestants on the importance of promoting the host nation, Thailand. He specifically calls out Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, by name, and accuses her of refusing to participate in a group photo shoot, which was to be posted on social media.

“You don’t like to post everything because your director from Mexico ordered you to not pay any attention, to post about the host country? If you follow the orders from your national director, you are a dumb,” Itsaragrisil said, per The Independent. When Bosch tried to respond, Itsaragrisil quickly shut her down, saying, “I didn’t hear you asking to talk.”

Bosch protested that she has “a voice” and said that Itsaragrisil was not “respecting me as a woman.” In response, Itsaragrisil called for security to remove Bosch. At this point, the other contestants can be heard gasping in surprise. Many of them, including 2024 Miss Universe winner Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark, walked out with Bosch in protest.

Who is Nawat Itsaragrisil?

Itsaragrisil is a popular Thai media personality as well as the national director of Miss Universe Thailand and an executive of the Miss Universe Organization. He is also the owner of the Miss Grand International pageant.

As is usually the case with these sorts of things, this is not the first time Itsaragrisil has come under fire for his comments and treatment of women. For one thing, he has a history of body-shaming contestants.

In 2016 it was reported that Itsaragrisil body-shamed then Miss Iceland, Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir. “Stop eating breakfast, eat just salad for lunch, and drink water every evening until the contest,” he told her. Just this past May he reportedly body-shamed Miss Grand International winner Rachel Gupta, causing more widespread backlash.

Who is Fátima Bosch?

Bosch won the Miss Universe Mexico title back in September, representing the Tabasco region, where she was born, per Excelsior.

Madhur Dixit Thanks Toronto for ‘lovely Meet and Greet’ Amid Controversy

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Madhuri Dixit is making headlines for her Dil Se… Madhuri event in Toronto. The actress faced backlash for allegedly arriving nearly three hours late. Fans who attended expressed their thoughts on social media and criticised the organisers for promoting the event as a concert when it was perceived to be a talk show. Some individuals also criticised Madhuri’s late arrival, while others described the evening as a disappointing experience and a complete waste of time and resources.

However, following the event, the Dil To Pagal Hai actress shared a post on Instagram thanking her fans and expressing her gratitude. She also announced dates of her further meet and greet events that will take place in New Jersey, Boston, Chicago, Houston, New York. This did not sit well with the fan and they demanded an apology from the actress for a similar event that took place on November 2. The confusion ensued when fans thought that the November 2 event would be a dance and musical night, but actually it was a ‘Meet and Greet’ event instead.

“Why were you 3 hours late with no apologies?” read one comment while another person wrote, “Madhuri Dixit Nene. I grew up loving you and watching you. As of now. Toronto is very disappointed in your show. They were misled. False advertising on what the show was supposed to be. What everyone was expecting and what actually happened.” Complaining about a fake advertisement for the Toronto show, another netizen added, “But you owe Toronto an apology for fake advertising…your own post on your profile doesn’t call it a Meet and Greet. You say an evening of dance , music and celebrations”

Meanwhile, Atique Sheikh, the event organiser stated recently that although the actress was on time, she got late due to ‘miscommunication from the management.’

He said in a statement, “It was a management miscommunication. That’s how some fans must have gotten confused, we can’t have a concert in a small banquet. It was pretty well mentioned before about the show being a Fan Meet. Madhuri ji has worked with us in the past as well and something like this has never happened. She in fact performed on her hit songs. Our idea was to present her celebrated journey in the industry and have a fan interaction.”

Miss Universe 2025 Controversy: Thai Director Issues Apology For Calling Miss Mexico ‘Dumb’ Resulting In Mass Walkout

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Tensions flared at Miss Universe Thailand 2025 when Thai director and Miss Grand International (MGI) president Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly clashed with Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, during a livestreamed sashing ceremony, sparking global controversy and contestant walkouts. What was meant to be a glamorous celebration of beauty and diplomacy turned chaotic on November 4 in Bangkok.

Nawat Itsaragrisil Called Fatima Bosch Dumb

According to reports, Nawat reprimanded Bosch for skipping a sponsorship shoot to attend a Telemundo filming session. As seen in the viral livestream, he was heard saying, “Stop! Sit down. If anyone wants to continue the contest, sit down,” after which Bosch exited the venue—followed by several contestants standing in solidarity. Later, Nawat appeared to escalate matters, saying, “Everyone can come back except Mexico. She’s talking too much.”

Fátima Bosch later took to TikTok, condemning Nawat’s remarks. “What your director did is not respectful. He called me dumb because of his issues with the organisation. I’ve done nothing wrong. We are empowered women, and no one can silence our voice,” she said. Her poised yet firm statement went viral, earning massive praise from fans and fellow contestants.

Miss Universe 2024 Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark also supported Bosch, writing, “Standing up for yourself is not always easy, but it’s one of the most important acts of self-respect.” Meanwhile, Miss Universe Bonaire 2025, Nicole Peiliker-Visser, urged reconciliation, saying, “We can fix this. We’re having such a great time in Thailand.”

In response, the Miss Universe Organisation (MUO) launched an investigation and dispatched a high-level delegation led by CEO Mario Búcaro to Thailand to ensure a professional environment and uphold the organisation’s values of transparency and unity. While the pageant schedule remains intact, MUO imposed restrictions on Nawat, with pageant president Raúl Rocha confirming the move in a social media statement reinforcing MUO’s stance on respect and professionalism.

Nawat Issues An Apology

Days later, a remorseful Nawat publicly apologised. During a welcome ceremony, he grew emotional, saying, “I want to apologise to everyone. I didn’t realise how big this issue would become.” In a livestreamed statement, he added in Thai, “If anyone feels bad or affected, I sincerely apologise—especially to the 75 contestants who were present.”

He also clarified that MUO’s CEO, Mario Búcaro, would soon arrive in Thailand to assist in resolving the situation, stating, “He is very kind and will fly in tomorrow so we can work together in alignment.”

The dramatic episode has since ignited widespread discussion about respect, professionalism, and women’s empowerment within global pageants—reminding the world that beauty competitions are not just about crowns, but also about courage, dignity, and voice.

Has Sydney Sweeney Commented on American Eagle Jeans Ad Controversy? – Hollywood Life

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Sydney Sweeney appeared in an American Eagle campaign titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” and the internet has been in flames ever since. Dropping in July 2025, the campaign featured the 27-year-old actress advertising the new denim line, and it divided social media over race and beauty standards. Now that American Eagle has addressed the debate, has Sydney?

Below, get an update on Sydney’s reaction to the criticism.

Why Did the Sydney Sweeney American Eagle Ad Spark Criticism?

There are several reasons why the “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” ad created a social media firestorm. People accused American Eagle of glamorizing racist rhetoric by using the term, “great genes,” interchangeably with “great jeans.” Since Sydney is a white, blonde actress, critics claimed the advertisement favored the blue-eyed, blonde-haired, white female image rather than a woman of color.

Others slammed AE for sexualizing the actress in its campaign. Sydney is seen in various videos getting dressed with the advertised jeans and leaning into the hood of a car, with the camera focusing on her figure.

Numerous social media commenters threatened to never buy from AE again, but others have defended the brand while blasting the critics for turning the campaign into an argument. Conservative media personalities have also slammed the “radical left” for politicizing the ad.

Has Sydney Sweeney Commented on the American Eagle Jeans Ad?

Yes, Sydney broke her silence on the matter during a November 2025 interview with GQ.

“I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans,” the actress said, adding that it was “surreal” to see Donald Trump and JD Vance support her jeans campaign.

Nevertheless, Sydney didn’t see the full scope of the scrutiny her ad was under, and she attributed that to her hectic filming schedule.

“I kind of just put my phone away,” she said. “I was filming every day. I’m filming Euphoria, so I’m working 16-hour days and I don’t really bring my phone on set, so I work and then I go home and I go to sleep. So, I didn’t really see a lot of [the backlash].”

This wasn’t the first time that Sydney responded to criticism. While training for her highly physical role in the upcoming Christy Martin biopic, Sydney was bullied by social media trolls over her body. In response to the comments, Sydney shared an Instagram video in December 2024 featuring screenshots of derogatory online remarks followed by clips of her working out in preparation to portray Christy. She did not include a caption with the post.

What Did American Eagle Say About Its ‘Great Jeans’ Ad?

About a week after being mauled with frustrated comments online, American Eagle released a statement on social media defending its advertisement.

“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,” AE insisted in its statement. “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”

Ashnoor Kaur Body-Shaming Controversy: Bigg Boss 19 Contestants Face Backlash! | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Controversy has erupted inside the Bigg Boss 19 house after contestants Kunickaa Sadanand, Amaal Mallik, Shehbaz Badesha, Neelam Giri, and Tanya Mittal were caught body shaming fellow contestant Ashnoor Kaur. Their insensitive remarks triggered outrage among viewers, celebrities, and Ashnoor’s family, who have called out for accountability on the show.

The issue began gaining attention when Ashnoor’s father, Gurmeet Singh, took to Instagram to express his anger at the defamatory comments aimed at his 21-year-old daughter. He shared a video compilation of what the contestants had said and wrote, “Why is everyone so insecure about a 21-year-old? Oh, I know… they can’t match her levels of dignity and grace.” His response quickly went viral, with fans praising him for standing up for his daughter.

The viral clips showed composer Amaal Mallik and Shehbaz Badesha mocking Ashnoor’s appearance. “Ande jaisi shakal hai (she has an egg-like face),” said Amaal. Shehbaz added, “She has become a thepla.” Meanwhile, another group comprising Kunickaa Sadanand, Tanya Mittal, and Neelam Giri was seen gossiping about Ashnoor’s fitness routine and body type. Sitting at the dining table, they wondered how the young actress, who follows a detox diet and works out every day, had not shed those extra kgs. “Kitni moti hai, sara din gym karti hai fir bhi itni moti kaise? Uske dresses hum par zyada suit karenge,” Neelam and Tanya said, making fun of her body type.

Tanya even went ahead to say that Ashnoor looked older than the rest of them, while Kunickaa added, “Even my 13-year-old granddaughter knows what to eat and what not to.” In another clip shown during a task, Tanya was heard calling Ashnoor “haathi” (elephant), further fueling viewers’ anger.

The audience quickly took to social media, condemning the behaviour of the contestants and asked host Salman Khan to take up the issue during Weekend Ka Vaar. The fans asked for strict action to be taken as such remarks were “unacceptable” and “disgusting” on national television.

The dignified Ashnoor Kaur, who carries herself with poise on-screen and off, got immense support from her fans and celebrities alike. Celebrities such as Rohan Mehra, Kamya Panjabi, Manu Punjabi, and Gauahar Khan extended open support on social media for her, saying that body shaming needs to be stopped and that reality shows should have kindness instead.

Kim Soo Hyun’s 500 KRW Lawsuit: A Seven-Month-Old Controversy Heats Up! | Glamsham.com

Top South Korean actor Kim Soo Hyun is set to appear before the 22nd Civil Division of the Seoul Central District Court on November 21, in connection with a lawsuit filed by a cosmetics company. The brand, identified as Cosmetics Brand A, is seeking damages worth 500 million KRW (approximately $350,000 USD) following the early termination of his endorsement contract.

Originally slated to end in August 2025, the brand abruptly cut ties with the actor in March, citing “serious reasons” that allegedly prevented the continuation of their partnership. In an official statement, the company explained, “We found it difficult to take immediate action regarding the contract termination without first hearing the statements of Kim Soo Hyun and his agency. After reviewing their position, we judged that there were serious reasons preventing the fulfillment of the advertising contract. The termination was then initiated through our legal representatives.”

The company emphasized that its decision was made to uphold the brand’s integrity and maintain consumer trust amid growing concerns over the actor’s personal controversies.

In response, Kim Soo Hyun’s legal representative, attorney Go Sang Rok, has firmly denied all allegations affecting the actor’s reputation, particularly those linking him to late actress Kim Sae Ron. Attorney Go stressed that Kim never had any inappropriate relationship with Sae Ron during her minor years and provided personal letters as part of the defense.

“These diary-style letters were written to Kim Soo Hyun’s actual partner while he was serving in the military,” Go stated, aiming to clear the actor’s name and prove that the claims were baseless.

As the court date approaches, the case continues to draw attention, with fans and industry watchers awaiting further developments in one of the year’s most talked-about celebrity legal disputes.

Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Controversy: History Behind MAGA's Reaction

Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Controversy: History Behind MAGA’s Reaction

by jummy84 October 19, 2025
written by jummy84

When the NFL, Roc Nation, and Apple Music announced that Bad Bunny would be the 2026 Super Bowl halftime performer, the noise started almost immediately. On one side, there were cheers and excitement: His fans recognized the historic nature of the performance, which will go down in the books as the first Super Bowl halftime entirely in Spanish. Plus, the announcement came toward the tail end of yet another massive year for Bad Bunny — after a triumphant 31-date residency in Puerto Rico, an Amazon stream of the concert that broke records, and the blockbuster success of his chart-busting album Debí Tirar Más Fotos.

On the other side, there was just as much commotion, but these conversations were almost hysterical — and far uglier. Conservatives blasted the NFL’s choice, taking issue with pretty much every facet of Latin music’s most visible star. His music? Unlistenable. His politics? Unacceptable. His lyrics in Spanish? Un-American.

Bad Bunny has been such a beloved figure across the global music landscape precisely because he’s been authentically himself, embracing fashion and aesthetic choices that subvert gender norms and refusing to make palatable, commercial pop in English. He’s been unafraid to speak his mind in his songs, often speaking out about difficulties in Puerto Rico, like gentrification, economic difficulties, and the long-term impacts of colonization. And while he isn’t a polemical artist who staged long tirades against the administration, he has stood up about issues he cares about, such as the rights of immigrants amid the government’s cruel deportation policies. In an interview with i-D magazine, he shared part of the reason he opted against touring in the U.S. was because he didn’t want ICE to terrorize his largely Latino fanbase outside his concerts.

This makes him a target for conservatives. Newsmax host Greg Kelly called for a boycott of the NFL, insisting that Bad Bunny “hates America, hates President Trump, hates ICE, hates the English language! He’s just a terrible person.” Even the highest levels of government have gotten involved. Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security secretary, threatened that immigration agents would be “all over” the event. Trump later went on Newsmax to bash the artist, saying, “I never heard of him. I don’t know who he is,” Trump said. “I don’t know why they’re doing it, it’s crazy, and then they blame it on some promoter that they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Editor’s picks

Turning Point USA, the conservative youth-focused group founded by the late Charlie Kirk, decided it would organize a “counterprogram” during Bad Bunny’s performance, calling it “The All-American Halftime Show” to celebrate “faith, family, and freedom.” A website contact form gives followers a chance to request music and artists, including worship music, country, and “anything in English.” MAGA supporters drafted inane petitions to replace his performance and even called for his deportation — despite the fact that Puerto Rico is a territory of the U.S. and he’s an American citizen.

As maddening and outsized as the reaction feels, it’s part of an unfortunate, small-minded tradition of sidelining and othering Latin artists in the United States, even though these musicians are often American and represent huge swaths of the population. These moments are callous and drenched in xenophobia, yet they go back decades. In 1968, for example, the Puerto Rican artist José Feliciano performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the 1968 World Series — only he did it in a stripped-back, Latin-influenced style on his acoustic guitar. The performance became a lightning rod; many people took it as if it was some kind of counterculture protest and were confused by Feliciano’s long hair and sunglasses (which he wore because he was born blind.) They raged to radio stations and sent him hate mail, with some even calling for his deportation — even though Feliciano, like Bad Bunny, was born in Puerto Rico and is a U.S. citizen. History, and ignorance, repeats itself, and in this case, it had dire consequences on Feliciano’s career for a few years.

Related Content

“I was a little depressed, to tell you the truth,” Feliciano said later. “And then they stopped playing me. Like I had the plague, or something.” Years later, in 2018, he reflected on the incident and shared that his rendition was actually his way of honoring his country from a deeply felt place. “When I did the anthem, I did it with the understanding in my heart and mind that I did it because I’m a patriot,” Feliciano said. “I was trying to be a grateful patriot. I was expressing my feelings for America when I did the anthem my way instead of just singing it with an orchestra.” (Perhaps not coincidentally, Bad Bunny paid homage to Feliciano as a pioneer and trailblazer, bringing him onstage during his 2023 headlining set.)

Other examples of bringing Latin artists onto mainstream stages have come with an unnecessary amount of controversy, even decades later. Take the 1999 Grammys: Back then, Ricky Martin was a star on the rise, having successfully plotted a career from child boy band Menudo to breakout solo act. He had already become a household name in Latin music, and his album Vuelve was nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Pop. His label head Tommy Mottola began pushing to have Martin perform one of the tracks — the famed “Cup of Life” FIFA anthem that Martin had written for the 1998 World Cup — as an opening number for the Grammys telecast. Despite Martin’s stage presence and star power, producers for the awards show disapproved of the idea, convinced a Latin act singing primarily in Spanish wouldn’t work for the show.

Mottola later recalled how intense the pushback was. “There was tremendous resistance from the Grammys,” Mottola told Billboard. “They did not want an ‘unknown’ to perform, yet we had already sold 10 million copies of Vuelve worldwide. To me, that was absolutely UNACCEPTABLE.  We had enormous leverage at that time with almost every major superstar on our label. We heavily voiced our ‘opinion and influence’ and said: ‘Ricky must have a performance on the Grammys!’ No was not an option.”

It took Mottola fighting for that moment to make it happen — and a standing ovation and thousands of records sold later eventually proved that the Grammys short-sighted biases didn’t hold any water. It seems even more ridiculous today, now that Latin music continues to generate more than $1 billion in revenue. Bad Bunny later played that same slot at the Grammy awards — and while he didn’t appear to face opposition from the show’s higher-ups, he did go viral when captions popped up on the CBS telecast, describing his lyrics as “singing in non-English.”

The all-too-frequent xenophobic knee-jerk reaction to Latin acts is often triggered by language alone. Just this June, the singer Nezza, who is of Colombian and Dominican descent, was asked to do the national anthem at a Dodgers game. She had prepared to do “El Pendón Estrellado,” a Spanish version written in 1945 by Clotilde Arias after the Division of Cultural Cooperation of the Department of State asked for translated versions of the “Star Spangled Banner.” (These were solicited as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Good Neighbor Policy” toward Latin America.) According to some reports, Dodgers officials told her at the last minute she couldn’t perform in Spanish — but she did so anyway, angering conservatives and sparking outrage and insults online.

Nezza explained her decision at the time in a statement to Rolling Stone, saying “representation matters.” She added, “For anyone clutching their pearls, it’s important to know: in 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself commissioned an official Spanish version of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ to honor and include Latin Americans. That version — ‘El Pendón Estrellado’ — tells the exact same story, word for word in meaning, and is set to the exact same melody. The heart of the anthem does not change with the language. So why was I told I couldn’t sing it? Make it make sense.”

Longtime prejudices have meant that Latin artists have been regarded with suspicion, doubt, and even outrage throughout music history, but these attitudes have twisted into something far more intense and sinister as a result of the current administration. Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance comes at a time when the government has antagonized Latino communities, spread anti-Latino rhetoric, and treated immigrants with abject cruelty, callously celebrating images of forceful, often violent arrests and brutal detainments. Even speaking Spanish is othered by conservatives and painted as anti-American. As soon as Trump came into office, he passed an executive order to make English the official language of the U.S. while the White House removed Spanish translations from its official websites. On social media, viral videos have shown right-wingers confronting people speaking Spanish and associating the language with those who don’t “belong” here, ignoring the fact that 18 percent of the population is bilingual.

But despite the rhetoric rooted in such an ugly history, Bad Bunny will still take the stage in February, and he’ll perform his songs in the language he wrote them in. That moment will represent millions of people in this country, including many of the Latinos who make up 20 percent of the population. What he chooses to say or do will ultimately be up to him, just the inherent act of him stepping under that spotlight will be a political statement — one that will speak to his roots, his lineage, and the history of Latin artists who have helped bring him here. No matter what, it will be a moment of self-expression — and one that’s deeply American, too.
