Late night television is going through major changes in 2025. CBS confirmed that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end next year, just weeks after Stephen Colbert picked up another Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series. Over at ABC, Jimmy Kimmel also added to his résumé with a Creative Arts Emmy win for Outstanding Host for a Game Show thanks to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. But his celebration was short-lived — ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been suspended indefinitely following backlash over Kimmel’s recent on-air remarks about the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s killing.

As viewers come to terms with Colbert’s looming exit and Kimmel’s show being pulled from the schedule, questions are swirling about the future of late night and what might come next.

Below, Hollywood Life has a breakdown of why The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is ending.

Was The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Canceled?

Yes, CBS is canceling The Late Show franchise after more than three decades on the air. Stephen took over the show in 2015, and it was originally hosted by David Letterman.

When Is The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Ending?

The Late Show will end in May 2026, CBS executives announced on July 17, 2025.

Why Is The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Ending?

CBS decided to gut The Late Show with Stephen Colbert due to financial reasons, network executives explained in a statement released on July 17, 2025, obtained by Variety.

“We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire The Late Show franchise in May of 2026,” CBS executives said. “We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.”

The executives added, “This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

The merger between Paramount Global — the parent company of CBS —  and Skydance Media is expected to close this year.

Paramount has doubled down on its claim that canceling Stephen’s show was financial. Despite facing criticism from Stephen himself, the network has maintained its answer, with Paramount Global TV Media Chairman George Cheeks following up about the situation.

“The challenge in late night is that the advertising marketplace is in significant secular decline,” George said in an August 2025 press conference, per TV Insider. “We are huge fans of Colbert, we love the show, unfortunately, the economics made it a challenge for us to keep going.”

Is Stephen Colbert Leaving The Late Show?

Stephen did not leave The Late Show voluntarily. Per Variety, the comedian was informed of CBS’ decision on July 16, 2025, and he informed the audience at the next episode’s taping.

What Is Stephen Colbert’s Late Show Salary?

Stephen is reported to have made a salary of around $15 million per year with CBS while hosting The Late Show.

Stephen Colbert Gets Standing Ovation at 2025 Emmys

by jummy84 September 15, 2025

Stephen Colbert received a rousing standing ovation while presenting at the 2025 Emmys on Sunday night. With his Late Show set to end next May, the host seized the moment to jokingly pitch his staff to potential future employers.

“While I have your attention: is anyone hiring because I have 200 very qualified candidates who will be available in June,” he said. “I also brought my resume but I haven’t had the chance to update my headshot.”

Later in the evening, Colbert received the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show.

CBS announced the cancelation of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert in July, calling it “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night” and unrelated to Paramount’s upcoming merger with Skydance. Still, some critics have speculated that Colbert — one of Donald Trump’s most outspoken adversaries —may have been offered as a sacrificial lamb to placate the Trump administration to help get the merger over the finish line.

Stephen Colbert Addresses Charlie Kirk’s Shooting Death

Stephen Colbert condemned the shooting of Charlie Kirk on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Late Show.” His statement came in a pre-taped segment that aired before the opening credits ran as normal.

“Good evening, everybody,” a solemn Colbert said. “After our scripts for tonight’s show were finished, we learned that Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist, was killed at a speaking engagement in Utah. Our condolences go out to his family and all of his loved ones. I am old enough to personally remember the political violence of the 1960s, and I hope it is obvious to everyone in America that political violence does not solve any of our political differences. Political violence only leads to more political violence. And I pray with all my heart that this is the aberrant action of a madman and not a sign of things to come. And now, ladies and gentlemen, the show that we had prepared for you.”

Kirk died on Wednesday after he was shot at a college event in Utah. He was 31.

Colbert isn’t the only late-night host to speak out against Kirk’s shooting. Jimmy Kimmel took to Instagram to demand an end to “the angry finger pointing” in the wake of the incident.

“Can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human?” Kimmel wrote. “On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

Donald Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social on Wednesday afternoon. In his post, he wrote, “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

Lady Gaga Performs “Vanish Into You” on Colbert: Watch

Lady Gaga stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night to perform “Vanish Into You,” a song from her 2025 album Mayhem.

For her performance, Lady Gaga opted for a more intimate, scaled down presentation of the Mayhem track. She sang in front of the piano alongside two guitarists (one acoustic and one electric), and only began playing the piano at the start of the second verse; throughout, the projections behind her ranged from black-and-white portraits of Gaga performing to images of cloudy skies in a thunderstorm. Meanwhile, Gaga provided a mesmerizing, heartfelt vocal performance (as usual). Watch the rendition below.

Gaga’s Colbert appearance arrived in the midst of a busy few days — last weekend, the star closed out her final New York performance of her lauded “Mayhem Ball” tour, won Artist of the Year (and performed) at the VMAs on Sunday, and made her much-anticipated appearance as Rosaline Rotwood in Netflix’s Wednesday, for which she offered the new song “The Dead Dance” last week.

Watch Lady Gaga’s Perform ‘Vanish Into You’ on ‘Colbert’

by jummy84 September 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Lady Gaga stopped by The Late Show to perform her song “Vanish Into You.” Hot off her win for Artist of the Year at the MTV VMAs on Sunday night, Gaga performed an intimate, emotional rendition of the piano-led ballad.

“Vanish Into You” appeared on Lady Gaga’s most recent LP, Mayhem, which dropped in March. The song was written by Gaga alongside Andrew Watt, Henry Walter, and Michael Polansky, and produced by Gaga with Watt and Cirkut. The track was notably the first song she wrote for the album and seemingly references her fiancé Michael Polansky. “In ‘Vanish Into You,’ I imagine that I just want to disappear into the person I love most,” the singer told ELLE.

Lady Gaga recorded Mayhem at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-la Studios. “The album started as me conquering a fear: to return to the pop music my earliest fans loved,” she said in a statement. “This record allowed me to reclaim a huge part of myself. It’s about enjoying everything I am and sharing that joy with my fans.”

She told Rolling Stone that she wanted to harness some of the darker sound and imagery from The Fame Monster and Born This Way. “I wanted to traverse old ground while breaking new ground, which I think is hard to do,” she said. “There are a few moments on the album where some people might say, ‘Oh, that reminds me of this,’ because I do have a style, but I made an effort musically to push myself to a new place.”

Not only did Gaga take home the award for Artist of the Year at the VMAs, she also performed live from her show at Madison Square Garden for the televised ceremony. Gaga joined the broadcast for a performance of “Abracadabra” and “The Dead Dance.”

While accepting Artist of the Year, Gaga spoke about the importance of artistry. “Being an artist is an attempt to connect the souls of people all over the world. Being an artist is a discipline, a craft meant for reaching into someone’s heart, where it grows its roots and reminding them to dream,” she says. “Being an artist is a responsibility to make the audience smile, dance, cry, release at any turn. It is a method of building understanding and celebrating community. I hope as you navigate through the mayhem of daily life, you are reminded of the importance of the art of your life that you can count on yourself and your simple skills to keep you whole, your rehearsal, your discipline, your craft, deserves to be rewarded for its passion.”
