Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert Give Trump Credit for Gaza Deal

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert gave their reactions to the Gaza peace deal on Monday night. Both late night hosts conceded that President Donald Trump successfully helped broker a breakthrough ceasefire that resulted in Hamas releasing the remaining Israeli hostages, while still finding plenty of other things to criticize the president about.

“What a day for Donald Trump,” Kimmel said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “You know what? He finally did something positive today and I want to give him credit for it — because I know he’s not the type to take credit for himself … While we’re only in the first phase of what will undoubtedly be a long and tricky process, but the fact is the bombing has stopped, the hostages have been released, and Trump deserves some of the praise for that. So I know it sounds crazy to say, but good work on that one, President Trump. Now maybe you can not invade Portland. Just an idea.

“Trump’s been lobbying hard to try to win the Nobel Prize for peace,” he added. “Now Trump’s focused on winning the prize next year, which is fine. Let him keep trying to make peace. I’m fine with coming up with prizes and trophies to motivate. Give them the ‘Nobel Re-Open the Government and Leave Healthcare Alone’ prize.”

Colbert, who was off last week, opened with a breathless rundown of all the news he missed: “The government shutdown is headed into its third week; Trump fired more than 4,000 federal workers; the DOJ charged New York Attorney General Leticia James with fraud after Trump’s pressure campaign; Trump sent troops to Chicago and Portland and is threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act; Trump announced a whopping 100 percent new tariff on China, which caused the stock market to have its worst day in six months — and Taylor Swift dropped her new album, The Life of the Showgirl, to merely mixed reviews,” Colbert said on CBS’ The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. “Well, those reviewers are just jealous of her talent and of Travis Kelce’s majestic redwood.”

Then Colbert got to the peace deal, and he had quite a lot to say about it.

“There is some good news out there today: Thanks to Trump’s newly brokered ceasefire in Gaza, all living Israeli hostages and almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners have been released,” Colbert said to audience cheers. “It’s important. Credit where credit is due — Donald Trump did something good.”

Colbert paused for a quick beat. The audience remained silent.

“Are we still canceled?” Colbert asked, looking offstage. “You sure? I tried.

“It’s kind of surprising to see him do something good,” Colbert marveled. “It reminds me of in Empire Strikes Back when Darth Vader revealed this shocking secret.”

There was then a quick cut to the famous climax of the Star Wars film, only instead of Vader intoning, “I am your father,” he said, “I am an organ donor.”

“Despite the deal on Friday, in a truly foreseeable turn of events, Trump did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize,” Colbert continued. “How dare you, Nobel Committee? The man is a paragon of peace. He walks in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King … After losing his campaign for the thing you don’t campaign for, Trump said he didn’t do the peace deal for the Nobel. And the White House communications director, Steven Chung, agreed, saying, ‘President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian.’ We remove that heart from one of the detainees in our ICE facilities. He keeps it in the Oval Office next to the Diet Coke button in a little bowl.”

Colbert then said, “On his flight over to Israel, Trump was asked by Fox News whether the ceasefire he brokered might help him in the afterlife,” before playing a clip of Trump responding, “‘I don’t think there’s anything [that’s] going to get me into heaven.’ I agree with Donald Trump. While Trump tries to bring peace to the Middle East, he’s trying just as hard to bring war to the Midwest. And personally I’m horrified to see how he’s stomping on my old stomping grounds of Chicago, Illinois, where I lived for over a decade. ICE has been terrorizing communities in the Windy City, going door to door in front of elementary schools, arresting immigrants, legal or otherwise, arresting U.S. citizens without any due process and teargassing journalists who are merely reporting on what they’re doing.”

Here are last night’s monologues from ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS’ The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, below:

Watch Sam Smith Perform ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’ ‘To Be Free’ on ‘Colbert’

The musician will kick off their To Be Free residency at New York City’s Warsaw this month

Sam Smith appeared on The Late Show to showcase two songs, a cover Bill Withers 1971 classic, “Ain’t No Sunshine” and their own single “To Be Free.” Smith performed his rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine” with the help of two guitarists, giving the iconic song a stripped down approach.

For the emotional “To Be Free,” which Smith dropped over the summer, Smith was joined by a sole musician on stage and illuminated from behind. A chorus of backup singers then brought in their voices to accompany them.

Smith released “To Be Free” in July after temporarily shelving the song, written during the making of their fourth studio album, Gloria. Smith didn’t believe it was a fit for the record, but wanted to share it with fans later. It features TwoCity Chorus, a 22-piece choir helmed by Ant Clemons and Brandon Pain.

“It was created during a time in my life where I became free within myself,” Smith said in a statement. “I’ve never had a recording experience like I did making this song. It’s one vocal and guitar take from start to finish—one live performance of me and my friend Simon Aldred in a pure state of music and expression.”

The music video for “To Be Free” was filmed at Warsaw, one of Brooklyn’s oldest venues. In October, Smith will spend 12 nights performing in the same space for the To Be Free: New York City residency. The run of live shows kicks off on Oct. 8 and extends through Oct. 31. Smith will then take the residency to the Castro Theatre in San Francisco for a run of eight shows next February.

Stephen Colbert reacts to ‘wonderful news’ Jimmy Kimmel is returning to ABC

Stephen Colbert says the “long national late-nightmare is over” as Jimmy Kimmel is set to return.

Stephen Colbert is delighted to have Jimmy Kimmel back on air

The 61-year-old star is delighted after his friend and fellow late night host’s suspension was ended by Disney, with his show returning to ABC on Tuesday (23.09.25) evening.

Speaking on The Late Show, Colbert said: “We do, like, 160 of these a year or something, and when I have the chance, it’s always nice to start the show with some good news.

“Well, just a few hours before we taped this broadcast, we got word that our long national late-nightmare is over, because Disney announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to air on ABC tomorrow, Tuesday night.

“Come on! Wonderful news for my dear friend Jimmy and his amazing staff.”

Colbert had previously referred to the decision to take Kimmel’s show off air early last week as “blatant censorship”.

The host – whose own programme is due to end next year – had said: “Tonight, we are all Jimmy Kimmel.

“Yesterday, after threats from Trump’s FCC Chair, ABC yanked Kimmel off the air indefinitely. That is blatant censorship.

“It always starts small. Remember, in week one of his presidency, call it Gulf of America. Sure, seems harmless, but with an autocrat, you cannot give an inch.

“If ABC thinks that this is going to satisfy the regime, they are woefully naïve.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was put on “indefinite” pause last week following comments the host had made about the killing of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, prompting a backlash and allegations of freedom of speech being suppressed.

On Monday (22.09.25), the Walt Disney Company confirmed the programme would return to the airwaves.

They said in a statement: “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.

“We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart Reacts to Jimmy Kimmel’s Return to Air

by jummy84 September 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and Seth Meyers are celebrating Jimmy Kimmel Live! returning to the air after ABC lifted the show’s suspension.

The Late Show host said in a teaser for his show’s Monday night opening monologue, “We do, like, 160 of these a year or something and when I have the chance, it’s always nice to start the show with some good news.”

“Just a few hours before we tape this broadcast, we got word that our long national late nightmare is over, because Disney announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to air on ABC tomorrow, Tuesday night,” Colbert added, followed by cheers from him and his live audience.

“Wonderful news from my dear friend Jimmy and his amazing staff. You know, I’m so happy for them. Plus, now that Jimmy’s not being canceled, I get to enjoy this again,” he said, showing off his Emmy Award again.

“Once more, I am the only martyr in late nights. Wait, unless CBS, you wanna announce anything?” Colbert quipped in reference to the network canceling his late night show in July.

The Daily Show‘s Stewart quipped on his Monday night show that “Jimmy Kimmel’s flying high like Advil today.” His joke referenced Trump’s announcement earlier Monday that the U.S. FDA has now linked the use of Tylenol to increased risks of autism, despite decades of evidence that it is safe.

Stewart then said he wanted to get “serious” for a moment. “That campaign that you all launched, pretending that you were going to cancel Hulu while secretly racing through four seasons of Only Murders in the Building… congratulations,” he said regarding people threatening to cancel Hulu and Disney+ in protest of Kimmel’s suspension.

“Wasn’t it interesting to try and figure out all the tentacles Disney has in your daily life? It’s one thing to swear off cruises, but the Avengers, no,” Stewart continued. “How is it possible that by getting rid of one company, I can’t watch Winnie-the-Pooh or Monday Night Football or listen to early Hilary Duff?”

Meyers, the host of Late Night, also said on his show, “Minutes before we started taping, we got word that our friend Jimmy Kimmel will be back on the air,” as his audience erupted in cheers.

“A massive national backlash to Trump’s crackdown on free speech, even among conservatives. I haven’t seen a poll yet, but I think if you asked Americans if the president should be dictating what TV hosts can and can’t say, you’d get about 3 percent positive and…” Meyers continued before cutting to a clip of Trump saying, “97 percent negative.”

ABC parent The Walt Disney Co. announced early Monday that Kimmel’s show would be returning to broadcast after its brief suspension ignited a national debate over free speech and the Trump administration’s pressure tactics.

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” the company wrote in a statement. “It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was initially suspended after a comment the host made during his Sept. 15 episode, which he suggested Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin was a MAGA conservative, caused a stir online. FCC chair Brendan Carr also threatened ABC’s affiliate licenses over the remark, which led some to preempt Kimmel’s show at the time.

While Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return Tuesday night, Sinclair Broadcast Group shared later on Monday that it will preempt the show, noting that “discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return.”

Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert react to Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension – National

Late-night hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert opened their shows Thursday by addressing the news of Jimmy Kimmel Live! being taken off the air “indefinitely” following remarks host Jimmy Kimmel made on Monday night about the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

On Wednesday, ABC suspended Kimmel’s late-night show after comments he made about Kirk’s killing led a group of ABC-affiliated stations to say they would not air the show.

Earlier on Thursday, The Daily Show announced on social media that Stewart would step in as host. He typically only hosts the Monday edition of the program.

Jimmy Kimmel suspension: Comedians express concerns over free speech censorship

“From Comedy Central, it’s the all-new, government-approved Daily Show, with your patriotically obedient host, Jon Stewart,” the show kicked off.

Halfway through the show, Stewart referenced Trump’s state visit to the U.K. this week and mentioned Trump’s comments about Kimmel during a press conference on Thursday with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, Starmer’s country house in the English town of Aylesbury.

When asked about the dismissal of Kimmel and free speech in America, Trump said, “Well, Jimmy Kimmel was fired because he had bad ratings more than anything else.”

“He said a horrible thing about a great gentleman known as Charlie Kirk. And Jimmy Kimmel is not a talented person. He had very bad ratings and they should have fired him a long time ago,” Trump continued. “So, you know, you can call that free speech or not. He was fired for lack of talent.”

Stewart began: “You may call it free speech in jolly old England, but in America, we have a little thing called the First Amendment, and let me tell you how it works.”

He then went into an explanation about a “talent-o-meter,” which he joked was a device on Trump’s desk that lets him know when someone’s “talent quotient, measured mostly by niceness to the president,” reaches a low level.

“At which point, the FCC must be notified to threaten the acquisition prospects for billion-dollar mergers of network affiliates,” Stewart said. “These affiliates are then asked to give ultimatums to even larger mega corporation that controls the flow of state-approved content. Or the FCC can just choose to threaten those licences directly. It’s basic science.”

Stewart went on to joke that he doesn’t know who the “Johnny Drimmel Live ABC character is,” but “the point is, our great administration has laid out very clear rules on free speech.”

“Now, some naysayers may argue that this administration’s speech concerns are merely a cynical ploy, a thin gruel of a ruse, a smokescreen to obscure an unprecedented consolidation of power and unitary intimidation, principle-less and coldly antithetical to any experiment in a constitutional republic governance. Some people would say that,” Stewart said. “Not me, though…. I think it’s great.”

Stewart also interviewed journalist and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Maria Ressa and asked for tips on coping with the current moment.

Ressa recounted how she and her colleagues at the news site Rappler “just kept going” when she was faced with 11 arrest warrants in one year under then-Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte.

“We just kept doing our jobs. We just kept putting one foot in front of the other,” Ressa said.

Colbert, who recently announced the cancellation of The Late Show, told his audience Thursday that he stands with Kimmel and his staff.

“And if ABC thinks this is going to satisfy the regime, they are woefully naive and clearly, they’ve never read the children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Kimmel. And to Jimmy, just let me say, I stand with you and your staff 100 per cent,” Colbert said.

He also responded to remarks Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr made about the importance for broadcasters to push back on Disney programming “they determine falls short of community values.”

“Well, you know what my community values are, buster? Freedom of speech,” Colbert said.

On Thursday, Jimmy Fallon opened his Tonight Show with a monologue addressing Kimmel’s suspension.

“To be honest with you all, I don’t know what’s going on. And no one does. But I do know Jimmy Kimmel, and he’s a decent, funny and loving guy, and I hope he comes back.”

ABC, which has aired Jimmy Kimmel Live! since 2003, did not immediately explain why it suspended the show on Wednesday. But its announcement came after broadcasters Nexstar and Sinclair said they would stop airing Kimmel’s show on their ABC-affiliated stations.

Story continues below advertisement

Carr had also warned that the network and its local affiliates could face repercussions if Kimmel was not punished.

Carr had called Kimmel’s comments “truly sick” and said the comedian appeared to intentionally try to mislead the public about the alleged shooter’s political leanings. He later applauded the decisions to stop airing Kimmel’s show.

In a statement shared on social media, Sinclair cited “problematic comments regarding the murder of Charlie Kirk” in its decision. Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, called Kimmel’s comments “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse.”

Sinclair called on Kimmel to “issue a direct apology to the Kirk family” and asked him to “make a meaningful personal donation to the Kirk Family and Turning Point USA.”

The broadcast group also announced that ABC stations will air a special in remembrance of Kirk on Friday, during the Jimmy Kimmel Live! timeslot.

In a post on his Truth Social platform Wednesday night, Trump applauded ABC for “finally having the courage to do what had to be done” and claimed that Kimmel “has ZERO talent.”

Kimmel, whose contract with the Walt Disney Co.-owned network expires in May 2026, did not immediately comment on the suspension.

Stephen Colbert’s ‘Colbert Report’ Character Returns for ‘The Word’

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Stephen Colbert pulled out all the stops in defending his late-night competitor and friend Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday. That included pulling out his old Comedy Central character: Stephen Colbert the political pundit and host of The Colbert Report.

Cue the bald eagle screech.

“Hello, nation,” Colbert said in character. “Daddy’s home.”

The faux Colbert jumped right back into his signature segment, “The Word,” which puts the conservative words coming out of his Republican mouth at odds with contradictory text in a side-chyron. To get us out of this “free-speech crisis,” Colbert suggests we all just…don’t say anything. And certainly not aloud.

Regarding the First Amendment, Colbert said, ”You can have your rights just as long as you don’t use them.” (Chyron: “Like a gym membership.”)

“Give up, America. Just give up and stop saying anything that might upset the president,” Colbert concluded. “If you think that’s a terrible idea, no you don’t.”

Watch the segment below.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended after mocking MAGA Republicans for scrambling to distance their own ideologies from those of Charlie Kirk’s alleged murderer, Tyler Robinson. Both sides of the aisle have been playing a game of hot potato with Robinson’s perceived political affiliations.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.

The joke cost Kimmel at least a few nights of ABC’s airtime — discussions about whether and when Jimmy Kimmel Live! would and could return are still ongoing at the highest levels within The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC. Read the inside story on how Kimmel’s Disney suspension was handed down here.

Colbert still has a talk show — until next May at least. His guests on Thursday’s show were CNN’s Jake Tapper and The New Yorker editor David Remnick. Both heavily criticized Trump for meddling and Disney for, as Tapper put it, “acquiescing” to power.

In the old days, The Colbert Report’s lead-in was The Daily Show. Well, Jon Stewart is back in that chair — sometimes — read here to see how he tackled the Kimmel crisis. Over on NBC, Jimmy Fallon had something to say about this whole mess — as did Seth Meyers.

Stephen Colbert Defends Jimmy Kimmel: “This Is Blatant Censorship”

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Stephen Colbert, unsurprisingly, delivered a passionate defense in support of Jimmy Kimmel during Thursday night’s episode of Late Show. According to CNBC, which attended the taping, Colbert called Kimmel’s suspension “blatant censorship” and criticized it as the work of an “autocrat,” referring specifically to Donald Trump.

“With an autocrat, you cannot give an inch,” Colbert told his audience. He also dedicated the evening’s episode to Kimmel and his staff, saying: “Jimmy, I stand with you and your staff 100%,” Colbert added.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was pulled indefinitely earlier this week after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatened ABC over Kimmel’s comments regarding Charlie Kirk’s death. Meanwhile, Colbert will lose his own late-night show next May. CBS described Colbert’s cancelation as a “purely financial decision,” though critics have speculated the show may have been sacrificed to help complete Paramount’s merger with Skydance.
