Film Club review: Dramedy has potential but it’s yet to be unlocked

by jummy84 October 3, 2025
written by jummy84

For one thing, Wood has already proven herself to be a delightful and engaging screen presence, so getting to hear her own screenwriting voice was a fascinating prospect.

For another, it’s always a thrill to see new British comedy series come to air, at a time when there are so many unique, funny and vibrant comedies out there (despite what some many would have you believe).

Then there’s the show’s charming concept, it’s quirky visual aesthetic, a central turn for Nabhaan Rizwan, I could go on – the point is, there were a lot of selling points.

It’s therefore a strange feeling to come out of watching all six episodes of Film Club and feel that it hasn’t quite made its mark yet, or fulfilled that desire I had. That’s not to say it wasn’t an enjoyable watch, or that it couldn’t achieve that potential in future – just that, right now, there are a few bumps in the road.

Film Club stars Wood as Evie, a young woman who hasn’t left the house in six months after suffering from a mental health episode, described as a ‘wobble’.

Every Friday, as a weekly escape, she and her friends, including best friend Noa (Rizwan), meet up in her mum’s garage and celebrate film. There’s a different film chosen for each week, decorations are put up to recognise that, costumes are required, phones are banned and a movie-related quiz takes place. It’s delightful. There’s just one snag.

That is that Evie and Noa are quite clearly in love with each other, despite never having expressed their feelings to one another. Oh, and Evie has a boyfriend, Josh. Oh, and Noa is moving to Bristol for his dream job, meaning film club won’t be continuing.

It’s all rather a lot for Evie to deal with, and over the subsequent weeks she goes on a journey of discovery, to reflect on her feelings for Noa, as well as to learn more about herself.

First things first, there are a lot of things about this set up that are really winning. The idea of the actual film club itself is so charming as to be almost ridiculous.

It’s crucial to note here, that this is not some hang-out for real, hardcore cinephiles. The films they watch each week are the most classic of classics that everyone will have heard of, and the vast majority of viewers will have seen – think Alien and The Wizard of Oz.

This gives the whole thing are a far more wholesome vibe, and the sense that this really is an excuse for socialising first and foremost. The characters have a passion for film (well, most of them do), but it’s their friendship that binds them, and this is just a fun way to express it.

It’s telling that this was conceived of during the Covid pandemic, at a time when physical meet-ups were impossible, yet it also feels deeply resonant today.

Even without restrictions, society has still become so much more virtual and isolated. A series preaching about the joys of social interaction, and showing characters simply enjoying each other’s presence by being a bit silly, with no fear of judgement, is not only endearing, but also kind of critical.

The characters here are also a complete joy to have on our screens, and Wood and her co-creator Ralph Davis have assembled a brilliant cast to bring them to life.

Wood herself is magnificent as Evie, whose positivity and passion are infectious and whose mannerisms are so fantastically specific and clear. Rizwan’s Noa is more straight-laced and, as is commented on at numerous times, formal, but has a habit of breaking out into incredibly bold accents and performances.

As a duo fronting the show, they’re both fantastic, with superb chemistry which feels like a real, long-lasting friendship.

Meanwhile, there are excellent supporting turns throughout, including from Liv Hill as Evie’s sister Izzie, with that sibling relationship between really well-drawn and observed.

Two real MVPs are Suranne Jones as Evie’s mum Suz, a genuinely distinct, brilliant character and such a departure from the typical ‘on-screen mum’ figure, and Adam Long as Josh, who may not be right for Evie, but has an endearing turn of phrase and a excitable energy.

Set up, all great, characters, delightful, intentions, utterly good-natured. So, what are these issues? Well, these come, instead, in the detail of the narrative and in the tone. On the latter, it’s key to note that reviewing comedy is hard – it’s so subjective and every individual will find different things funny.

Unfortunately, I personally just didn’t find Film Club all that funny. It’s operating on a grounded, low level of humorous interactions, and sure, there are some funny character beats throughout and some sequences that evoke a chuckle, but for the most part it’s just not something that provided me with any real, deep laughs.

Part of the reason for this is that, despite being billed as a comedy-drama, the synonym dramedy might work better, simply because the drama is really the first port of call.

That brings me neatly to the plot, and in particular, the central romantic tension between Evie and Noa – these two are perhaps just too meant for each other.

Of course, that concept has a long history in romantic comedies, both in film and on TV, but here it’s kind of absurd. Evie doesn’t seem to have any particular chemistry with Josh, she and Noa are practically an old married couple from the word go, and even his moving away doesn’t feel like enough of an impediment to giving it a go.

There’s barely even the standard question of both parties being worried to ruin the friendship if they were to be rejected – their chemistry is so utterly blatant that even they so don’t seem entirely oblivious to how one another feels.

Every time there’s a roadblock in their journey, it just feels like a slightly forced and mechanical way to drag out the will-they-won’t-they storyline.

However, if you’re not vibing with the central romantic story, there are still plenty of other subplots to go down. In fact, there are slightly too many, with this scattershot approach leaving some of the most crucial ones feeling under-developed.

For instance, Evie’s mental health storyline is drawn in the broadest brush strokes, and never really honed in on in any substantial or meaningful way.

The lack of specificity may be universalising, and therefore a comfort to some, but it means that when Evie does start to get better it’s slightly harder to feel her catharsis, simply because we’ve never been entirely sure what she was struggling with to begin with.

Again, this could be an intentional statement on the ways in which we relate to others in times of crisis, and everyone’s experiences surrounding the topic will be different.

Purely from a dramatic standpoint, it can be somewhat frustrating, as though the show is keeping us at arm’s length. However, on a real-terms level, if this series helps some people who are struggling feel more seen, then that is wonderful, and a real, tangible good.

Kai Assi as Ziggy and Owen Cooper as Callum in Film Club.

Kai Assi as Ziggy and Owen Cooper as Callum in Film Club. BBC/Gaumont/Ben Blackall

The way this storyline is dealt with just does seem to be part of a piece with a number of the other decisions made across the board. For instance, the film club conceit should be grounds to commit to a real episodic structure, wherein the films chosen are used as themes for the instalments, expressing what they’re trying to explore and doing so with aesthetic links.

At times, it feels this is the route the show is going down, and those are arguably some of the best moments of all. One dreamlike sequence involving a spacesuit, inspired by Alien, is fantastic.

However, as in a number of other areas, it fails to commit to this as a long-running structure, or indeed any structure or unifying concept. This keeps you on your toes, for sure, but sometimes a defined framework for episodes is good, helping to act as the glue holding everything else together.

Instead, we get what feels like many different versions of this show, with a number of different branches and characters being underserved – Adolescence breakout Owen Cooper in particular is largely wasted as local kid Callum.

As already expressed, none of this is to write Film Club off. If you’re looking for a really easy, cosy watch of an evening, something fairly light where you can spend time with likeable characters and superb performers, then this could very well fit the bill.

It’s also not to say that a second season couldn’t completely win me round on some of these quibbles. There’s so much potential here that I’d love to see a second iteration of this, one where some of the screws are tightened and a really clear theme, story and structure are honed in on.

But for now, Film Club isn’t quite the knockout personal favourite I wanted it to be – even if it’s still delightful to have a series which firmly celebrates friendship and film.

Film Club begins on Tuesday 7th October at 10pm on BBC Three and iPlayer.

New York’s venerable Manhattan Theatre Club has selected Associate Artistic Director Nicki Hunter to take over as Artistic Director when Lynne Meadow steps aside on December 1. Meadow has held the position of Artistic Director at the nonprofit theater for 53 years.

Hunter’s appointment was announced Thursday by MTC’s Board of Directors. Meadow, as previously announced, will assume a new role as Artistic Advisor.

Hunter first joined MTC in 2009 as an intern. In the 16 years since, she has held several key positions, including Artistic Associate, Line Producer and Artistic Producer before being promoted to Associate Artistic Director.

“I’m elated and deeply honored to be stepping into the role of Artistic Director of MTC,” said Hunter. “I’m inspired by the unparalleled body of work Lynne Meadow has created for the last 53 years as Artistic Director. She is a titan in our industry. I look forward to building on the theatre’s legacy to see it through to a successful and bold new era, working together with Chris Jennings, our Board of Directors and the theatre’s dedicated staff.”

During her five-decade tenure at MTC, Meadow has guided acclaimed shows by such playwrights as Christopher Durang, John Guare, Beth Henley, Terrence McNally, Eureka Day‘s Jonathan Spector and many others. MTC produces both Broadway and Off Broadway productions. The company’s current Broadway staging is Punch by James Graham, in previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater.

“I am thrilled that Nicki Hunter has been chosen to be my successor,” said Meadow. “I believe that she has the skills, talent and vision to lead us into an exciting new era and to create a vibrant repertoire for our three theatres. I have treasured 16 years of working closely with her and have been consistently impressed by her ability to identify talent, by her gifted producing instincts, and by her passion for new ideas.”

The search for MTC’s new Artistic Director was conducted by Diane Carlyle Executive Search, a firm specializing in nonprofit arts leadership.

The Impossible Fortune review: A new dawn for The Thursday Murder Club

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Soon she’s drawn into a case involving a missing person, murders, and a fortune in bitcoin. And of course she has to bring the gang along for some help, being forced to rely on them a lot more than usual.

The real strength of the series has always been Osman’s character work. The Last Devil to Die remains the series’ emotional peak, but this entry carries that thread forward, which proves a wise decision. Elizabeth, still mourning Stephen, isn’t as sharp as usual, and for the first time the investigation doesn’t belong solely to her. Instead, the others – Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron – step into the spotlight.

Joyce shoulders much of the responsibility, rallying the group and making decisions herself, even when it puts her in danger. Ibrahim continues his curious connection with Connie the drug lord, a relationship that’s proving unexpectedly rewarding for them both.

Meanwhile, Ron takes centre stage in the B-plot, wrestling with the reveal of his daughter’s abusive marriage and his own ageing body. His struggle with fading strength and identity delivers some of the novel’s most poignant passages, though admittedly leaving the reader wishing for even more.

As ever, Osman uses the cosy crime frame to explore themes often overlooked in the genre: loneliness, loss and diminishing independence. Here, Ron’s journey of letting go of his old self and embracing a new one is especially affecting and the novel would be even stronger if readers were able to linger on these themes just a little longer.

The mystery itself is more high-tech than usual, with missing bitcoin sparking a chase that draws in ruthless players. The wealth-obsessed leave chaos and death in their wake, and the investigation has real bite. As mysteries go in The Thursday Murder Club series, it’s a fairly exciting one with an element of the cat and mouse chase.

The Impossible Fortune isn’t quite as accomplished as The Last Devil to Die, which married a gripping plot with rich character exploration. But it serves as a necessary reset: easing Elizabeth into her new life, allowing her space to grieve, and giving Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron the chance to prove they’ve learned from her.

If the first four novels were largely centred on Elizabeth’s incredible talents, this one suggests a small reset to allow the rest of the crew to show just what they’re capable of too. The future’s looking very bright for this talented bunch.

Shilpa Shetty’s Bastian is not done with creating its legacy! The brand is looking forward to entering a new era! Recently, the social media page of Bastian Mumbai made an official announcement, stating that Bastian will undergo a transformation into Ammakai, a South Indian restaurant in Bandra, and it will also expand in Juhu with Bastian Beach Club, beginning from mid-October.

Biastian Bandra Will Now Be Called Ammakai

The statement read, “While you’re working hard at the ‘rumour mill’, today at Bastian, we’re serving ‘The Real Tea.’ Bandra was our beginning, and while that chapter closes, two new stories are waiting to be written. The Brand Steps Into a Next Era. Bastian Bandra, the flagship that started it, all bids adieu, the brand looks forward to opening new exciting new chapters in its culinary journey.”

“From mid-October, the iconic Bandra space will transform into Ammakai, a specialty South Indian restaurant. Meaning ‘the mother’s hand’, Ammakai embodies comfort, warmth, and authenticity. Ammakai pays homage to the depth of South Indian culinary traditions, recipes seeped in heritage, enriched with regional flavours, and brought to life with the impeccable service and quality synonymous with the Bastian name,” it added.

“At the same time, Bastian is expanding its vibrant spirit to the shores of Juhu with the Bastian Beach Club. This new coastal destination will capture the brand’s signature energy of indulgence and celebration. Bandra was where Bastian’s journey began, and it will always remain close to us. As we evolve, it feels right to honour the depth of South Indian cuisine through Ammakai while also bringing the energy and indulgence of Bastian to Juhu in a fresh new way. We’re closing one chapter, but two new stories are waiting to be written, and we can’t wait to welcome you into them,” it concluded.

This announcement refutes any rumours surrounding the shutdown of Bastian due to any financial issues. Instead, it’s a step ahead, with Shilpa Shetty at the fore once again.

The Thursday Murder Club ending explained: Who is the killer?

by jummy84 August 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Several characters soon fall under suspicion, including Tony’s shady former business partner Ian Ventham (David Tennant) and former employee Bogdan (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), and it doesn’t take long until the gang have infiltrated the investigation with help from junior cop Donna De Freitas (Naomi Ackie), much to the annoyance of her superior DCI Chris Hudson (Daniel Mays).

Various twists and turns ensue as the story unfolds and, while the film is mostly faithful to the book, there have been a few alterations including to the motives behind the murder.

Want to know more? Read on to have The Thursday Murder Club ending explained, along with full details of what’s been changed from the novel.

The Thursday Murder Club ending explained: Who killed the first victim, Tony Curran?

With the club already chasing several leads, things really take a turn at the protest against Ian Ventham’s continued developments and his plans to dig up the graveyard.

Ian is facing down the protestors when he suddenly collapses and is soon afterwards pronounced dead at the scene – with the probable cause of death given as an overdose of Fentanyl.

Shortly afterwards – with the gang realising they are all suspects – Elizabeth mentions the photo that was found at Tony’s murder scene, which saw him standing alongside a notorious criminal by the name of Bobby Tanner and a man who appears to be Jason Ritchie, Ron’s son (although she withholds this information from the others).

She explains that Tanner had been joint owner of Cooper’s Chase along with Tony and Ian – who are of course both now dead – and is therefore now the only surviving owner, with the gang agreeing to try and track him down.

When Elizabeth returns to her apartment, she finds that Bogdan (who she had previously introduced herself to as Marina, hoping to get information from him) is there playing chess with her husband Stephen – and that he has found out the truth about her identity. He also says he has something he wants to show her that night in the cemetery.

That night, Elizabeth meets Bogdan as promised and he shows her something very suspicious he’d found while digging up the graveyard: bones that had been placed on top of a coffin several years earlier, appearing to show evidence of someone trying to hide a body.

The Thursday Murder Club. Netflix

The following evening – after the remains have been dug up and Elizabeth and the gang get a dressing down from Chris for continuing to interfere in police matters – Elizabeth notices an intruder in her apartment who has mysteriously left flowers along with card that reads “back off”.

Then, the next morning, Donna tells her that the bones belonged to a man named Peter Mercer, which instantly prompts Elizabeth to take her to see former Thursday Murder Club member Penny (who is now in a coma) and her husband John.

Later, while Chris is questioning Jason – who has been arrested on suspicion of Terry’s murder – the gang (minus Elizabeth) arrive in his office to derail the interview, and Jason admits that the real reason he had been cagey was that he was with Ian’s wife at the time of the murder – and that they’d been having an affair. That rules him out as a suspect and he walks free.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth works out where the flowers she’d been sent had come from and is thus able to track down the sender: Bobby Tanner himself. She takes Donna with her to visit him at his florist business, and they question him – asking him directly if he’d had Tony and Ian murdered to get their shares at Cooper’s Chase. He denies it and says he is looking to sell the land as fast as he can.

During their discussion, one of Bobby’s workers come down and explains how he’s just picked up “another three Polish workers in Amsterdam” and had taken their passports.

Turns out, Tony and Bobby had been engaging in a practice of bringing in people to work illegally for their businesses and keeping their passports from them. This information appears to make things click for Elizabeth, who instructs all the rest of the gang – and the police – to rush back to her apartment as soon as possible.

All this time, Bogdan has been playing chess with Stephen again, with the latter beginning to question him about Tony’s murder – saying that he believes it was Bogdan himself who had committed the crime.

Bogdan calls him clever and reluctantly admits to his crime, saying it was an accident – that he had no intention of killing Tony and that he had merely been trying to get his passport back.

After this confession, Stephen succumbs to one of his bouts of memory loss, and Bogdan goes to make him a cup of tea, appearing to briefly toy with spiking it with some nearby medication. Elizabeth and co arrive back just after Stephen has taken a sip, and they stop Bogdan from escaping as he becomes aware of what is going on.

Thankfully, Joyce realises that Stephen hasn’t been poisoned, and furthermore that, since Stephen records all his chess games, Bogdan’s confession is on tape.

Faced with this knowledge, Bogdan reiterates that it was an accident, and that he had killed Tony in self-defence when the latter had lashed out after refusing to give his passport back. He also confirms that he didn’t poison Stephen, who he considers as a friend.

Who killed Ian Ventham and Peter Mercer in The Thursday Murder Club?

David Tennant in The Thursday Murder Club, wearing a white T shirt, grey jacket and snarling, with a picture of a woman on the wall behind him.

David Tennant in The Thursday Murder Club.

While that clarifies what had happened to Tony, it leaves things murky as to the murder of Ian – whose death now looks to be unconnected to Tony’s – and the remains of Peter Mercer.

While the rest of the gang are watching Jason competing on Dancing on Ice, Elizabeth decides to look back at previous files concerning the latter and comes across some very interesting information, which she then takes to her old friend John – who remains at Penny’s bedside.

She reveals that the file – which Penny had suspiciously never suggested as one of the cold cases during her days on the Thursday Murder Club – concerns a previous case in which Mercer’s girlfriend had been killed by a supposed masked intruder. Only, there had been no intruder – it was actually Peter himself who had killed her, and he had gotten away with it.

Looking at the photos, Elizabeth realised that, knowing Peter was guilty, Penny had taken matters into her own hands, killing him and hiding his body at the cemetery with John’s help. It was those bones that Bogdan had dug up all these years later.

John admits that Elizabeth’s theory is right, and also that he had killed Ian Ventham using a massive dose of Fentanyl to stop the grave from being dug up and exposing the crime, protecting his beloved wife.

What happens to John in The Thursday Murder Club?

Elizabeth admits that she’ll have to tell the police but agrees to give John a bit of time with Penny first, seeming to realise that John will use that time to apply both himself and his wife with a fatal dose of the remaining Fentanyl.

We then flash forward to Ibrahim delivering a eulogy at their funeral, saying: “Sometimes, good people do bad things. But what John did, he did for love. For the love of Penny. And their enduring love will span time and space, dancing into the stars together. We shall miss them, and we shall remember them always.”

How does the end of The Thursday Murder Club film differ from the book?

Although showing many of the same events, the film actually differs from the book in quite a lot of key ways – especially concerning the plot around the murder of Tony Curran.

There’s a whole plot involving Tony’s ties to drugs and organised crime – including a character named Turkish Gianni, the murder of a taxi driver, £100k in stolen cash and a trip to Cyprus – that is not featured in the film.

Meanwhile, although Bogdan was the killer in both the film and book, his role is significantly changed.

The whole passport scheme is a new plot line for the film, with the motive for murder in the book having been tied to the fact he had stolen £100k of Tony’s money many years ago after shooting Gianni in retribution for his own best friend being shot to cover up Tony’s murder of a taxi driver many years earlier.

He had been waiting for a chance to kill Tony ever since to complete his revenge, and does so while helping him install a new security system.

As for the plot involving Ian Ventham and Peter Mercer (named Peter Weber in the book), this is also altered, albeit less dramatically. Aspects of the story involving characters called Gordon and Karen Playfair and an increased role for Father Mackie are cut, making the version of the story in the film rather more streamlined.

Speaking about the changes to his original plot on The Rest Is Entertainment back in February, Osman explained: “There were certain people who part of their deal would be, ‘You will have complete creative control over the whole process, you can write it,’ which I didn’t want to do.

“With Amblin and Spielberg, when they came in, they said, ‘It’s definitely going to be in England, we’ll give you that assurance, but someone else is going to write it.'”

He added: “The plot, as I understand it, for The Thursday Murder Club movie is based on the first book but it’s not entirely the same, because you have to change things, is the truth,” he said.

“To have me looking over their shoulder every five seconds telling them that they couldn’t do this or they couldn’t do that I think would be hard.”

The Thursday Murder Club is now playing in select UK cinemas and will stream on Netflix from Thursday 28th August 2025. Discover a world of crime & mystery with Sky Essential TV for just £15 a month.

Kehlani & Ice Spice Shake Up The Club With Light Night Out

Okay, so BOOM! The Shade Room snagged footage of Ice Spice and Kehlani, and babyyyy they looked like they were having a timeeee at the club okay! The clip shows the duo turning up to Ice’s ‘Deli’ track. Ice, in true fashion, lip-synced every word while she backed it up on Lani. Kehlani clearly felt the vibes heavy as she danced up behind Ice with her hands on her hips at times. As if that wasn’t enough, LiveBitez dropped another video showing them getting litty amongst a packed crowd, giving straight “you had to be there” energy.

Is Soulja Boy Trying To Make Moves On Ice Spice?

Chile, before Ice Spice and Kehlani’s turn-up session started going viral, the internet had its eyes on Ice Ice for a totally different reason. The ‘Hannah Montana’ raptress started trending after Soulja Boy seemingly shot his shot at her when Wave Checkers shared recent pics of Ice on X (formerly Twitter). Soulja reposted the pics with the caption, All I need is 5 mins maybe 10 she gonna wanna marry a n***a. Fans quickly peeped that the line ended up coming from the classic ‘Friday’ movie.
