NFL Star Stefon Diggs In Paternity Dispute w/ Influencer As He Awaits Baby w/ Cardi B

#StefonDiggs is unsure if he’s the father of a months-old baby girl.

The New England Patriots player is involved in a paternity dispute with model and influencer Aileen Lopera, who claims he is the father of her child born in April. While Stefon hasn’t denied having a s3xual relationship at one point with the woman, he is “not certain” the child is his. To get to the bottom of things, he requested genetic testing, and in July, a judge ordered both parties to undergo it. It’s unclear whether the testing took place or what the results were.

Stefon is known for keeping his private life private, so the chances of any confirmation coming from him are slim. He even jokingly dodged questions recently when asked about the baby he’s expecting with his girlfriend, rapper #CardiB. His silence isn’t stopping Aileen from speaking out. Her lawyer said in a statement to PEOPLE, “My client looks forward to the day Mr. Diggs acknowledges and provides for his infant daughter in Los Angeles.”

8 Best Songs On Cardi B’s ‘Am I The Drama?’

by jummy84 September 20, 2025
written by jummy84

The gap between Cardi B‘s debut album, Invasion Of Privacy, and her long-awaited sophomore album, Am I The Drama?, was so long that the following things have been able to happen: Donald Trump finished his first term as President, unsuccessfully campaigned for reelection against Joe Biden, and then spun back to retake office when it seemed like Kamala Harris would lead this country to a new, better reality. The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl two months before Invasion, went through a few difficult years, lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023, and then got their lick back this past February. Kanye West and G.O.O.D Music dominated June 2018 with five different albums, one of which was Pusha T’s Daytona, which sparked their feud with Drake—only to lose nearly every affiliate over the next seven years and temporarily reconcile with Drizzy in the meantime.

The point is: people had been waiting a long time. So much had changed within the music industry, in the world, and with Cardi’s perception, that people doubted if she could put together a good album, let alone something that compared to her last. She maintained her presence via features and unfortunate drama, and incessantly told fans that the album was coming. Some reached the point where they said she should never release another project—partially because they feared the sophomore slump was looming, and also because they didn’t want to stress over anticipating something that may never come.

Well, at long last, Am I The Drama? is here. And for all the doubters, people who discredit her ability because of the machine around her, historical revisionists, or any form of naysayers, the 23-track LP delivered. The timing of it—after her difficult public divorce from Offset and new relationship with NFL Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs—couldn’t have been more opportune. The Grammy winner had something big to talk about, and some bubbling feuds with rappers that inspired her to rap with a fervor people may not have believed she possessed.

Most of all, Am I The Drama? is a reminder that she’s more than just a rapper. Invasion helped her to transcend genres, and this album continued that within Hip-Hop’s subgenres and beyond. We won’t touch on all 23 songs, but we do have VIBE’s picks of the eight best tracks from the LP. Hopefully, this sampler encourages you to take the whole, 71-minute journey and listen for yourself.

  • “Hello”

Cardi B previewed “Hello” at WWE SummerSlam 2025, and the reaction was “What is that record?” The full track did not disappoint in today’s era of snippets that sound better than complete songs. In a way, it had the energy of an intro despite being track two. The Bronx star keeps the hook and verses simple, but it’s the bounce and delivery that make this one a winner.

She not only flexes all her qualities, but puts the mirror in the face of her detractors. “It be you that’s hella mad/ It be me that’s getting tricked on by somebody’s baby dad/ It be me that’s lookin’ sexy, it be me that’s lookin’ cute/ It be me with body bustin’ out, this Miu Miu bodysuit,” she spits in the second verse. Whether you’re getting ready to go out, in the car with your girls, or at the gym, “Hello” is the quintessential soundtrack for many different environments.

  • “Pick It Up” Feat. Selena Gomez

“Pick It Up” is the album’s early that Cardi has crossover appeal. She tapped Selena Gomez, a major pop star she’s previously worked with, for a record that does not sound outside of either artist’s wheelhouse. Gomez brings the vocals, but her cadences and lyrics lean more toward Hip-Hop. Cardi raps, but utilizes a more refined melodic tone at certain points of the song. The beat utilizes rap drum patterns and pop-like synths for a very pleasing hybrid.

Both acts, who’ve had publicly chaotic relationships, wholly lean into their emotions in what could be considered a “spin the block” anthem. On the record, their partnerships are hanging in limbo, and neither wants their man to leave things unfinished. Even if someone can’t relate, it’s hard not to empathize with their creative expressions throughout the nearly three-minute song. This has radio hit, playlist monster, and TikTok virality written all over it.

  • “Safe” Feat. Kehlani

Cardi B and Kehlani in the "Safe" music videoCardi B and Kehlani in the "Safe" music video

“Safe,” featuring Kehlani, is an example of perfect A&Ring. Timing-wise, there is no better time to tap the Oakland, Calif. singer, given the creative space she’s in, and with her latest single “Folded” going crazy on the charts. Conceptually, the record is all about what the 30-year-old singer often covers in her music. Additionally, the production mirrors Jordan Adetunji’s “Kehlani,” a sexy drill banger from last year.

Cardi lands perfectly on this type of production, blending the sensual nature of feeling secure with someone with her Bronx aggression, which may force a man to step up and be her protector even though she clearly does not need one. The only reason this song doesn’t become a hit is if “Pick It Up” takes all the attention, and that will be a fun competition to witness.

The cherry on top of all of this is the variety of ways they use the word “safe” to create metaphors and similes that relate to comfort within a relationship, and how they weave in and out of each other’s lines on the chorus and verse. “‘Cause I feel safe like I just ran and slid across the plate/ Safe like we playin’ tag and you home base/ Ayy, safe like I got a big dog in a gate, rrr/ Safe like you one of these h*es, play in my face,” they rap. All of that to say, “Safe” is a home run.

  • “Man Of Your Word”

Cardi B at the 2025 Met Gala.Cardi B at the 2025 Met Gala.
Image Credit: Michael Buckner/Penske Media via Getty Images

“Man of Your Word” is an in-depth reflection on her drama-filled marriage with Offset. The production is mostly stripped back, allowing her stream of consciousness to take the forefront. Dougie F opens the record with a moving chorus, but it is Cardi B‘s confessionals that shine the most.

The best part is that she takes accountability in the areas where she faltered, while also calling out her ex’s mistakes. “Ni**a, I believed you, don’t know if I’m mad at me or you/ Once upon a time, I thought I needed you/ Even though I’m up, I always treat you like we even, dude/ See what special treatment do? Huh, I could’ve cheated too,” she raps.

There is clearly still love there, as she admits the seven years weren’t all bad despite the negative feelings she experienced. She even says she put her music ahead of checking in on his pain, and how that could have caused them to drift apart. Cardi B is typically very boisterous and assertive, but this tone and cadence remind people that she can be sensitive, making her feelings, the song, and her all the more endearing.

  • “Pretty & Petty”

Image Credit: Christopher Polk/Variety via Getty Images

A difficult divorce did not stop Cardi B from being, well, “Pretty & Petty” as the song title conveys. This track has a ’90s bounce to it, and the production elements fall in line. However, her attitude is very similar to that of certain rappers who have taken aim at her. Literally, she opens this song with “Name five BIA songs, gun pointin’ to your head/ Baow, I’m dead/ That melatonin flow puttin’ us to bed/ I’m doing you a favor, Epic, run me my bread.”

She unloads even more in the second verse, spilling tea about BIA’s life, as the kids say. Evidently, the Boston rapper was kicked out of a condo, hung around Diddy’s house, and her breath stinks. Now, in the spirit of Hip-Hop, these could all be fabricated, but people love lies and truths equally. One thing she did not lie about was the “London” rapper’s lack of commercial success in comparison to hers. And there isn’t much she can say in return.

This song lands at a perfect time as the Hip-Hop space is obsessed with all forms of rap beef. It will be interesting to see if BIA comes back with anything, but “Pretty & Petty” is great not just for the digs but also the overall song elements.

  • “ErrTime”

Cardi B at Revolve Festival.Cardi B at Revolve Festival.
Image Credit: River Callaway/Billboard via Getty Images

With “ErrTime,” Cardi may be a bigger fan of Southern rap than people may have realized. The production sounds like a 2000s Jeezy beat, but also a 2020s BossMan Dlow beat. She captures the essence of both rappers, dropping sharp liners and a quickly memorable “Oowoo” ad lib in between.

One of the underrated gems of this song is that she opts for a short verse to start, followed by a refrain, before returning to the chorus. Then she drops a longer second verse, spins back to the refrain, and closes with an outro. This song structure was commonplace in the 2000s, and clearly, Cardi and her team really did their homework on the type of songs that have staying power. You get the Latto bar in the refrain, the Don Julio reference in the chorus, and countless other lines throughout the verses. “ErrTime” is an anthem in every way.

  • “Principal” Feat. Janet Jackson

Cardi B at the GRAMMY Awards.; Janet Jackson at the American Music Awards.Cardi B at the GRAMMY Awards.; Janet Jackson at the American Music Awards.

Your eyes did not deceive you; Cardi B is on a song with Janet Jackson. “Principal” functions as a double entendre, being spelled like the authority figure in a school to convey both women’s statuses. However, it is used as “principle,” otherwise known as a fundamental truth or belief system. They drive this point home by flipping Janet’s 1986 jam “The Pleasure Principle.”

The record is all about Cardi ensuring her partner knows the deal: ignore the women chasing him, always be upfront with her, and understand that where she comes from informs who she is and how she operates in the relationship. Though her delivery doesn’t deviate from her beloved grittiness, the production is a bit brighter and dance-friendly. Don’t let the celestial Janet vocals make you miss the point, though.

“Take me to the trenches (Trenches), I don’t ever panic (No)/ Take me anywhere, just don’t take me for granted (Facts)/ You could spoil me all you want, you ain’t loyal, I don’t care (I don’t)/ My ni**as and my food is just two things I can’t share, bi**h,” she raps. It’s a very modern take on a vintage sound and a tried-and-true concept: loyalty is essential. It’s the principle of it all.

  • “Nice Guy” Feat. Tyla

Last, but most certainly not least, “Nice Guy” featuring Tyla. This is another pop-rap hybrid song that has the potential to go to the moon due to its talent, chorus, production, and content. The bubble-gum-esque record covers the progression of an innocent crush up to the paranoia and dismissiveness that come when the honeymoon phase bubble is burst. Both women yearn for their men’s intimacy and attention, but their feelings consume them to where they start to lose trust.

Eventually, their focus is to flex on someone they once craved and being petty. They’re human, it happens. The standout aspect of this song, though, is the South African artist delivering a full rap verse right before the final chorus. Tyla has demonstrated her versatility throughout her career, but not to this degree. Much like Selena and Cardi on “Pick It Up,” they found a happy medium between their signature sounds and concepts, ultimately creating a potential hit. The ladies will love this one.

Cardi B Goes Scorched Earth on Am I the Drama?: Review

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Asking Cardi B to mind her tongue is like asking an oceanic creature to abandon its undersea home. It’s not fucking happening. The Bronx MC lives and breathes controversy, even when she’s not intentionally courting it. Since her 2017 breakthrough single, “Bodak Yellow,” Cardi B has steadily revealed herself to be the high-profile celebrity of our time, a larger-than-life personality who is just as quick to dress down the average Barb as she is to eviscerate her own peers.

Between a messy divorce, babies (babies, and more babies), rap beefs, internet vitriol, and court cases, Cardi B has remained in the public eye. This is all despite the fact that she hadn’t released an album since 2018’s Grammy-winning Invasion of Privacy. Her new album, Am I the Drama?, confirms that yes, Cardi B is the reason for all of the chaotic situations she constantly finds herself in — but is she at fault, or is she just shining too bright? Cardi’s latest project is an offering of proof that she’s a blameless victim of hating-ass bitches and ain’t-shit n****s. It’s up to us to believe her.

In a recent Spotify conversation with Destiny’s Child royalty Kelly Rowland, Cardi shed light on the inspiration behind Am I the Drama? “Sometimes, fans or people will be like, ‘Oh, don’t give them energy,’” Cardi said. “‘They don’t deserve your energy,’ or like, ‘They don’t deserve your clout or your attention.’ And it’s like, nah, you know what? Fuck it. I’mma give it to you. It’s like, fuck it, I’mma give it to you. Because sometimes people be like, ‘Just ignore, ignore, ignore. Take the high road.’ And it’s like, ‘Fuck the high road.’” If you’ve if been paying even a smidgen of attention, you know that Cardi B’s aversion to going high when others go low is unsurprising. This album is her opportunity to get her lick back on everyone who has been praying on her downfall, be it for years or minutes.

The opening track, “Dead,” features R&B diva Summer Walker singing more passionately than we’ve heard her in a while, as Cardi raps about her foremost goal of killing the competition: “They say, ‘Cardi, you tweaking,’ nah, I don’t be tweaking enough/ Bitches be doing shit and I be letting it slide and I don’t be bringing it up/ Bitches be out here telling lies about me and y’all just be eating it up/ But when I drag her to hell, ‘Cardi, you evil as fuck!’” On the BossMan Dlow-inspired “Magnet,” Cardi menacingly sharpens a lyrical machete in a pointed attack against JT of the former Miami rap group City Girls. For nearly a minute straight, Cardi shatters the rapper’s image, without a single care or fuck to give.

“Pretty & Petty” is unexpected sonically, as it bangs like a song that West Coast newcomer AZ Chike would place on his own debut album. But thematically, it’s right on cue, as Cardi uses the entire song to re-escalate her beef with Boston rapper BIA, an artist she’s been targeting since her feature on last year’s “Wanna Be” remix with GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion. “Name five BIA songs, gun pointing to your head/ Bow, I’m dead,” she raps at the top of the track, before launching into an outright assault based on accomplishments. “You wanna beef with me, are you sure?/ Do she even got a BET Award?” (While a BET Award is a high honor in the Black community, it’s sometimes seen as low on the totem pole of awards across the industry.)

Cardi B Reignites BIA Feud In Scathing New Diss Track “Pretty & Petty”

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Cardi B‘s long-awaited sophomore album Am I The Drama? is proving the title is more than just a rhetorical question. The 23-track project arrived today (Sept. 19), and already has fans dissecting the lyrics and matching subliminals to names.

On the track “Pretty & Petty,” Cardi reignited her 2024 “beef” with Boston rapper BIA, claiming that the “London” rhymer doesn’t have five songs that people could name, nor a “look” that Cardi would want for herself.

“Name five BIA songs, gun pointed to your head/ Bow, I’m dead,” she rapped before also spitting, “I’d rather die on the surgery table/ Before I gotta walk around here lookin’ like you.”

Proverbially, Cardi twisted the knife even deeper, taunting that promoters only book “Diarrhea Bia” when “they can’t afford Coi [Leray],” and even questioned if BIA has a BET Award to her name. Cardi has 21, by the way, including both BET Hip-Hop and Social awards.

She then brought Diddy into the mix, lyrically asking BIA: “Why you always at Diddy house?/ I heard they combed that lil’ kitty out/ Tell these folks what’s it’s really about.”

And just when it seemed like the jabs couldn’t get any lower, The “Bodega Baddie” rapped, “I’m a bad bi**h and you mad/ ’Cause you built like your dad.”

The feud traces back to March 2024, when fans suggested Cardi was copying BIA’s style, something BIA seemingly co-signed with a “woozy” emoji on X.

Cardi later addressed it head-on in her verse on Megan Thee Stallion and GloRilla’s “Wanna Be (Remix)” by spitting, “Guess I’m a teacher since you wanna sub me… Bi**h please, don’t nobody wanna be ya (BIA).”

BIA wasted no time firing back in an untitled track where she accused Cardi of infidelity and questioned her pen game. “Put it on your hubby since you love lyin’ on your vows… I’ll be damned if I let an ni**a f**k a bi**h inside my house,” she spit. She also shaded Cardi’s multiple surgeries as “mid” and her speaking skills as “second-grade level.”

In response to cheating allegations, Cardi went the legal route, warning in an IG Live video, “I’m a sue you and you got to come with receipts. And not social media receipts, court receipts,” she said. “I will get every little f**kin’ red penny that you ever f**kin’ make, bi**h.”

Bia simply quipped, “SUE ME ??? That’s not Hip-Hop.”

For Icelandophiles who semi-learned the words to Sigur Rós and Sin Fang records back in the day, the wait for Múm’s return has been long enough. History of Silence, Múm’s first album in 12 years, nestles into the fibers of their longtime sound: whispered lyrics, gauzy strings, melodica, and percussive ambiance. Although their seventh studio album and follow-up to 2013’s Smilewound’s gets its name from dead air, Múm are lively and present throughout, be it the shimmering sounds of “Kill the Light” or the vividness of “Mild at Heart.” Recorded, deconstructed, reassembled, and refined over two years, History of Silence is a humble comeback that savors every second.

Kitba: Hold the Edges [Ruination]

Kitba makes bedroom-pop music that harks back to a time before “bedroom-pop” was really a thing. On Hold the Edges, the Brooklyn-based harpist and singer-songwriter, otherwise known as Rebecca El-Saleh, composes hall-of-mirrors synth ballads with the sumptuous textures and sing-songy quality of Frou Frou, their vocals, often Auto-Tuned, a nervy mix of the shellshocked and declarative. The mazy single “Soften,” one of many breakup songs on the LP, is about “being angry long after you feel you should be, wondering when your hardened heart will soften,” they said in press materials. “It’s twisting inside and chaos, vibratingly bright and tense.”

Cardi B Responds to Young Thug Pushing His Album Release Back

by jummy84 September 18, 2025
written by jummy84

Young Thug is happily clearing the way for the arrival of Cardi B‘s long-awaited sophomore album Am I the Drama? Friday (Sept. 19) by making sure his own upcoming album UY Scuti drops later.

“Yall know I wasn’t dropping Friday. It’s a ladies day,” he wrote on X Wednesday night (Sept. 17) with a heart emoji. “Do yo s–t @iamcardib.” She sent back her own words of encouragement by replying, “And you better step next week …you got this, You know this !!”

Ahead of Am I the Drama?, Cardi revealed the album’s 23-song tracklist Thursday (Sept. 18), which includes previously released singles “WAP” (featuring Megan Thee Stallion), “Up,” “Outside” and “Imaginary Playerz” as well as more collaborations with Summer Walker (“Dead” and “Shower Tears”), Selena Gomez (“Pick It Up”), Kehlani (“Safe”), Lizzo (“What’s Goin On”), Cash Cobain (“Better Than You”), Lourdiz (“On My Back”), Janet Jackson (“Principal”), and Tyla (“Nice Guy”).

As for Thugger’s UY Scuti, he initially revealed this Friday as the release date at the tail end of his apologetic “Miss My Dogs” video that dropped last week, which addressed his trials and tribulations with his girlfriend Mariah The Scientist, Drake, Gucci Mane, 21 Savage, Future and Lil Baby. In a since-expired Instagram Story from Wednesday, the Altanta-bred MC teased another track with producer 808 Mafia while writing “Next Friday,” meaning Sept. 26. UY Scuti is now expected to drop the same day as Mariah Carey’s sixteenth studio album Here for It All and Doja Cat’s fifth studio album Vie.

Earlier this week, Thug was announced as one of the performers at Coachella next year, marking another major post-prison performance following his headlining stint at Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash this past June and ComplexCon next month.

bitchy | Cardi B confirms her fourth pregnancy, her first with boyfriend Stefon Diggs

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Man, Cardi B is fertile. Cardi is expecting her fourth child, and first with her boyfriend Stefon Diggs. Cardi’s first three children were fathered by her first husband, Offset. For what it’s worth, Cardi and Offset’s divorce has not been finalized. She’s still technically married, although she has been the one pushing for the divorce to move faster, and Offset is the one dragging his feet. Cardi has only been dating Stefon Diggs for less than a year? The first rumors about them started last fall, but they didn’t really step out together until spring and summer of this year. Also: during Cardi’s trial several weeks ago, she absolutely looked visibly pregnant and she was waddling in and out of court. So, there was already a lot of gossip, but she only confirmed it today.

Cardi B is expecting another little one! The “I Like It” rapper, 32, revealed in an interview on CBS Mornings that aired on Wednesday, Sept. 17 that she’s pregnant with her fourth child, due before her tour launches in February.

“I’m having a baby with my boyfriend, Stefon Diggs,” Cardi B told anchor Gayle King, in a pre-taped interview. Responding to King’s messages of congratulations, Cardi — born Belcalis Almánzar — expressed her thanks and shared, “I’m excited.”

“I’m happy,” she said. “I feel like I’m in a good space. I feel very strong, very powerful that I’m doing all this work — but I’m doing all this work while I’m creating a baby.”

She went on to share about her relationship. “Me and my man, we’re very supportive of each other. We’re like in the same space in our careers,” she said. “I feel like we’re really great and one of the best at what we do. And me and him think the same way. ‘Yeah, you’re one of the greatest, but what’s next. What are we doing again? We have to do it again, all the time.’ We’re never, like, comfortable. We just have to keep going it and that’s just what we are.”

Diggs, a 31-year-old NFL wide receiver for the New England Patriots, makes Cardi B feel “safe,” she told King — both emotionally and physically. “You see how big he is,” she joked.

“He just makes me feel safe and very confident and very strong,’ said Cardi B. “Two weeks ago, I was literally having a panic attack. I was like crying and crying and crying, just because I was getting really nervous with the whole album rollout. People were coming at me very hard; you know, sometimes people love you, people hate you. And people was just saying very mean things about me.”

[From People]

I’ve been around the gossip mills long enough to remember when Cardi used to talk about Offset as a super-supportive partner too. I don’t know anything about Stefon and maybe he’s truly a great guy and everything. But I find this very chaotic and I doubt the relationship will last. That being said, Cardi seems like a great mom, and she loves her babies. When she has this baby, she will have four kids under the age of seven. *deep sigh* Better her than me.

More than any artist, Cardi B paved the way for social media personalities and reality stars to parlay their internet following into a music career. In the lead-up to her sophomore album, Am I The Drama?, she’s taking it back to reaching her audience through a string of viral skits, public appearances, and an emphasis on physical sales. At the risk of sounding like an armchair A&R, Cardi’s grabbed the rollout baton from Clipse and stoked our collective anticipation for her album, out Friday.

Her first skit, on September 3, doubled as a celebration of winning her civil battery case against former bodyguard Emani Ellis. “Just because I won this case…I still got lawyers.” she joked, imploring fans to buy Am I The Drama? CDs for $9.99. The special “Courtroom Edition” CD covers showcase her different viral hairstyles during the trial. “I swear to God, if I don’t sell these albums, I’m gonna have to give up my Rolls-Royce,” she mock cried. She dropped the following promo video days later in Harlem, lampooning 125th Street’s infamous vendors with CDs and vinyl strewn on the sidewalk. The video’s caption read, “My label said I gotta get out in these streets and sell this album,” as she hawked the $9.99 physicals (and incense) while Bob Marley’s “One Love” played in the background.

Her next clip was in a boardroom, where she joked that after shooting her lavish “Imaginary Players” music video, Atlantic Records had scaled back its spending. With expert comedic timing, she opened an envelope and revealed that her “budget” had dwindled to just $50. “I have to get out on the road and sell these CDs and [vinyl] myself,” she said. And the beginning of that journey took her to New York’s MTA, where she did a skit selling CDs and vinyl on a train. She had so much attention to detail that she used the same Welch’s candy box that candy sellers on the train typically use. The latter two clips felt especially familiar to New Yorkers used to people selling items on sidewalks and in between trains.

Collectively, the videos didn’t just help promote the album; they needled wannabe industry insiders. Nowadays, music fans can’t just enjoy the music, they need to speculate about first-week sales and the permutations of an artist’s label situation like they’re a manager. Cardi’s meta promotion gets at how invasive music fandom has become while placating those same fans.

The theme of the videos, chronicling her selling music like a starving busker, is another example of Cardi playing into her biomythography. She’s repeatedly expressed her frustration with Atlantic Records over the past few years, especially since the regime that signed her was replaced last September. In July, she made an X post about “being tried by these new people,” shortly before the release of her single,  “Outside” — a release that she’s said was contentious between her and the label. In August, she likened  Atlantic to a “correctional facility” in a since-deleted Instagram post. She’s seen fans speculate about acrimony at Atlantic, and how it may play into the rollout of her new album. Instead of ignoring the fracture, she’s comedically leaned into the turmoil.

Even during her recent rollout, she’s criticized Atlantic for “underestimating” the turnout for her New York City Bodega Baddie pop-up. In an Instagram post, she explained that she wanted to give attendees QR code coupons for her digital store, but the crowd was too ruckus to do so. That snafu might be a good problem for Am I The Drama?, however, demonstrating that her demand is still there.

It’s been a long wait for her latest project. Since the Invasion of Privacy, she has released songs and done features, but her fans have been anticipating a second album. In her June 2024 Rolling Stone cover story, she told writer Mankaprr Conteh about the perfectionism that’s delayed the project: “I take my music so fucking seriously that that’s why I don’t put it out. Because if it’s not perfect to my ear, if every fucking word doesn’t sound like it’s pronounced right, if the beat is overpowering the words or the words is overpowering the beat, I don’t want to put it out.” It’s also worth wondering how pregnancy may have delayed the album; she’s given birth to three children since her April 2018 debut release. Today, she revealed to Gayle King that she’s pregnant with her fourth child and her first with her boyfriend, NFL star Stefon Diggs. Even so, it looks like it’s all steam ahead on her new album; she tweeted shortly after clips from the interview went viral that “by the time tour comes I’ll be doing splits, somersaults, backflips and handstands.”

Cardi B is a natural star. Before she was a rapper, she was a well-known stripper and social celebrity who parlayed outrageous Vine skits into a spot on Love & Hip-Hop: New York — the rest is history. Her career ascended quickly in part because of her sense of humor and charisma. She radiates a bold, no-filter charm that feels familiar to her fellow New Yorkers and captivates the rest of the world. It’s why, despite not dropping an album since 2018, she’s been on shows such as Rhythm + Flow and films like Hustlers, and F9, also doing voice acting for Baby Shark’s Big Movie!  No matter how this album performs, there will always be opportunities for her in front of a camera.

It’s refreshing to see Cardi get back to having fun. As entertaining as she is, she’s also been in the social mediasphere too often behind civil suits, back-and-forths with other rappers, label drama, and issues with Offset, her ex and the father of her children; her latest album title isn’t surprising. With these self-deprecating skits, she’s going back to what worked for her on day one. In a cheesy movie about a rapper, their manager or partner would have a come-to-Jesus moment with them about reminding fans why they love them, and they’d go to a cipher, or hold a free concert in the park to reacquaint the people. For Cardi, returning to her essence is just about doing silly skits back home in New York.

Clipse were able to parlay a concentrated media press run into commercial success, turning their buzz into a Vatican performance. While Cardi hasn’t done as many interviews, speaking with Billboard, Kelly Rowland, and King, she’s still won goodwill with fans and shifted the discussion from controversy to her comedic chops. If she can put effort into promoting her album, get outside, and head on a national meet and greet tour, there’s no excuse for pretty much anyone else.
