Cardi B’s ‘Am I the Drama?’ Rollout Report Card: Podcast Grades

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

In 2018, Cardi B aced just about every aspect of her first career album rollout. Invasion of Privacy was released to rave reviews, spawned another immediate smash in the J Balvin and Bad Bunny collab “I Like It,” debuted atop the Billboard 200 and eventually won a Grammy for best rap album. Her videos were iconic, as were her interviews, and the deep cuts on the album were just as rewarding as the big hits, all of which fit together perfectly. It was a borderline-perfect album era — one that, perhaps unsurprisingly, took her seven years to even attempt to follow up.

With this Rollout Report Card episode, host Andrew Unterberger is joined by Billboard staffers Kyle Denis and Emily Fuentes as we look at everything surrounding Am I the Drama? — both in the seven years that separated it and Invasion, and now the three months since its actual announcement. We attempt to grade all aspects of the rollout, and whether or not the longest-anticipated album in recent pop or hip-hop memory (and Cardi’s tireless promotion of it) managed to live up to our expectations.

As we hand out our letter grades for all the most important factors in Cardi’s Am I the Drama rollout — from the live performances and music videos to the new songs and overall “albuminess” — , we answer all the most pressing questions about the Drama: Did Cardi need a bigger budget for some of her music videos? Which of the album’s advance singles deserved a better reception than they got? Why didn’t we get any official live performances on this album cycle? Should Kelly Rowland have her own talk show? Is it possibly to have an album-y 23-track LP that ends with two half-decade-old singles? How do we feel about Lizzo doing 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up” karaoke? And perhaps most importantly: After seven years, does it feel like Cardi B is officially, properly back?

Check it out above — along with a YouTube playlist of some of the most important moments from this fascinating album campaign, all of which are discussed in the podcast — and subscribe to the Greatest Pop Stars podcast on Apple Music or Spotify (or wherever you get your podcasts) for weekly discussions every Thursday about all things related to pop stardom!

Rap star Cardi B admits she’s ‘very dramatic’

by jummy84 September 24, 2025

24 September 2025

Cardi B is “very dramatic”.

Cardi B has confessed to being overly-dramatic

The 32-year-old rap star is well-known for her outbursts on social media, and she raised eyebrows earlier this year when she removed photos of boyfriend Stefon Diggs from her Instagram account – but Cardi insists people shouldn’t read too much into her online behaviour.

During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Cardi explained: “I’m dramatic. That’s the thing.

“Like, something that to people is a big deal, to me is not a big deal at the moment. And then it’s like, ‘Ugh.’ It became something that is not.”

Asked whether she archives the photos or deletes them from her phone entirely, Cardi explained: “I just archive. But I’m very dramatic. Like I’m the type of person that’s like, ‘Oh, okay.'”

Cardi’s decision to remove Stefon from her social media accounts actually annoyed her boyfriend at the time. But the loved-up couple are now able to laugh about it.

The rap star said: “He was like, ‘Why would you do that?’ But you know, that’s the type of thing that we laugh about.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Cardi claimed that Offset, her estranged husband, wants her to “pay for [his] taxes”.

The chart-topping star filed for a divorce from Offset over a year ago, and she claims that financial disagreements are now slowing down the process.

Cardi said on a livestream: “The only reason why I’m still married is because somebody wants me to pay for their taxes

“Y’all wanna know the tea? The only way I can get out of my marriage is if I pay for somebody else’s taxes, even though I pay for my own, and give them one of my properties. I’mma fight for that. This is not no love s***. I’m not gonna stop living my life.”

Cardi claims that Offset – who stars in the rap group Migos – wants “millions of dollars” in order to finalise their divorce.

She said: “On a contract, I’m practically still married, because somebody [wants to] hold me hostage, if I don’t give them millions of dollars to get out of it.”

Cardi B: AM I THE DRAMA? Album Review

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

AM I THE DRAMA? acknowledges the stylistic transformation of New York rap, with production largely in the hands of Sean Island and DJ SwanQo. But Cardi maintains a respectful distance from the prevailing trends. Instead, she plays with bursts of experimentation, adopting new flows without sacrificing legibility. “Pretty & Petty” does double duty: The hook is readymade for ubiquity as a TikTok trend while the verses constitute one of the most punishing diss tracks of the year. She practically prances over the beat, a grittier, New York-ified take on the cadences and melodies associated with Mustard’s L.A.

In the vein of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” the apparent glee with which Cardi crushes Boston rapper Bia, four years into an escalating beef, magnifies the effect: “Name five Bia songs, gun pointin’ to your head/Baow, I’m dead/That melatonin flow puttin’ us to bed/I’m doing you a favor, Epic, run me my bread.” As if to prove her point, the song’s release coincides with steep exponential growth of Google searches for Bia name. Devastating. The album is at its most enjoyable when Cardi is in this prickly mode: “Hello,” “Magnet,” the 2 Chainz-written “Salute.” The bilingual, Dyckman-ready “Bodega Baddie,” a turbo-charged merengue bop, makes a promise akin to Rihanna’s mythical reggae album; at under two minutes, it’s a brief glimpse at a worthwhile style for Cardi to linger on.

It’s been a long seven years. Exercises in catharsis abound in the form of heartbreak songs, recorded in the shadow of divorce. With few exceptions, these are grating rap ballads on which even the specifics of a toxic relationship feel generic. The default formula of a sung chorus registers as vacant, even when entrusted with the capable Summer Walker, Lizzo, and Kehlani. Cardi joins many of her streaming-era peers in shunning the self-editing that made Invasion of Privacy, at 13 songs, effective. That work, when offloaded to the listener under the guise of generosity, lands instead as risk aversion.

In certain realms of pop, the songwriting process has become a compacted, impenetrable underbrush, with observers desperate to gather more meaning from a list of song credits than is actually possible. Cardi’s lablelmate, Pardison Fontaine, remains a stubborn yet compatible presence and, with writing credits on 19 of 23 songs, her most consistent collaborator. For fans, this makes him a trustworthy creative partner; for skeptics, it damns Cardi as a talentless hack and Pardi her sub rosa crutch.

But, as she has herself articulated, Cardi’s musical talent has not historically been that of an effortless generator of songs; what she has mastered, as a rapper and elsewhere, is locating an idea, seizing it, and transmuting it into something her own: a style of rap that is both outrageous and easily digestible, designed to travel well from the strip club to the Super Bowl. Always walking the line between edgy and accessible, Cardi summons the breakthrough of early aughts rap more than she does her contemporaries; this is the stuff of high-end recording studios, not improvised bedroom setups.

An ingenious cultural interpreter of sorts, Cardi transported the exclamatory trill “okurrr” from its drag origins to the late-night talk show circuit so effectively, and without any apparent sacrifice of authenticity, that it is often falsely attributed to her. “Am I the drama?” too, has its origins in drag. It was Scarlet Envy, as a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race, who first wondered, cheekily, about her culpability. But, as an album, AM I THE DRAMA? seems to signal that, for Cardi, the question functions better as a rhetorical one: It doesn’t really matter whether she’s the drama; even if she didn’t start it, Cardi will be the one to end it.

Cardi B Replaces The Weeknd At 2025 Global Citizens Festival

by jummy84 September 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Cardi B has officially been tapped to headline the 2025 Global Citizen Festival, stepping in to replace The Weeknd after his sudden withdrawal from the lineup.

The Weeknd’s decision to pull out, according to organizers, was due to a personal emergency, though details remain private.

The annual festival, set to take place on Saturday, September 27, in New York City’s Central Park, is a cornerstone event in the fight against global poverty, blending star-studded performances with activism-driven calls to action.

“We are incredibly grateful to Cardi B, who has joined the Global Citizen Festival lineup,” wrote Global Citizen CEO and co-founder Hugh Evans in a statement.

“She’s an outstanding performer, who will light up Central Park in spectacular fashion. We wish The Weeknd support and want to thank him and his fans for all taking action with us to help end extreme poverty.”

For Cardi, the opportunity to headline holds deeper meaning than just music.

“This one’s not like other music festivals — this one is about coming together to help children around the world, and I’m so proud to support such an important cause,” she shared in a statement. “New York City — see you Saturday. Let’s get it!!!”

Fresh off the release of her long-awaited sophomore album Am I The Drama?, which is projected to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Cardi’s appearance will be second time performing at the festival.

She previously took to the stage in her hometown back in 2018, after the release of her debut studio album Invasion of Privacy.

The festival will be hosted by actor Hugh Jackman and includes performances from Tyla, Ayra Starr, Mariah the Scientist, and others.

Beyond entertainment, the Global Citizen Festival aims to secure tangible global commitments.

These include delivering clean, reliable energy to 1 million people in Africa, generating $200 million for Indigenous and local entrepreneurs to preserve land within the Amazon rainforest, and raising at least $30 million to fund community-based education programs that improve children’s literacy.

Tickets to the Global Citizen Festival are free and available through the Global Citizen app.

Cardi B Reveals Hold-Up On Offset Divorce, Alludes To Ex Wanting Her To Pay His Taxes & Sign Over One Of Her Properties: Imma Fight For That

It’s not lingering love that’s keeping #CardiB and #Offset married.

During a recent live chat on X, Cardi clarified that she’s “legally separated” from Offset, and the only reason their divorce hasn’t been finalized is because someone wants to hold her “hostage.”

While she didn’t directly name her husband of seven years, Cardi suggested Offset’s #divorce demands include having her pay his taxes and hand over one of her properties, two things she’s ready to “fight.” She also said the separation hasn’t affected her children’s lives, emphasizing that their schedules remain unchanged.

Celebrities React To Cardi B’s ‘Am I The Drama?’ Album Release

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Cardi B is taking over everyone’s timelines today with the release of her new album, Am I The Drama?.

The Bronx rapper built up the anticipation by teasing her sophomore effort sporadically with singles, check-ins via guest verses, and updates. Over seven years have gone by since her monstrous debut, Invasion Of Privacy, which made landfall on April 6, 2018, and went on to win Rap Album of the year at the 2019 Grammys.

Now, the mother of three (soon to be four) is back and hungrier than ever. Her new 23-track project boasts an elite list of guest appearances from names like Janet Jackson, Tyla, Cash Cobain, Summer Walker, Lizzo, Kehlani, Selena Gomez, Lourdiz, and Megan Thee Stallion. It was led by previously released singles like “Outside” and “Imaginary Playerz.”

Amid the hype surrounding the album, the “WAP” artist announced several opportunities for fans to catch her in person. Starting today, she’s heading out on a string of meet and greet appearances across several cities. After that, she’s embarking on her first-ever headlining arena tour. Visit the full list of dates and ticket details here.

Listen to the newly released Am I The Drama? album above and check out celebrity reactions below.

  • Summer Walker

Summer Walker and Cardi B have a good public working relationship, as Cardi hopped on the extended version of “No Love” back in 2022 and the singer is featured twice on the new project. The Over It songstress went to her Instagram stories to show support and give flower to Cardi for working hard during the promo run.

“First of all, y’all need to do listen to Cardi B’s new album, because it’s Cardi B. She’s been promoting the f**k out that album. She’s been out on the streets, the subway, everything. Second of all, she got kids to feed. Third of all… I’m opening that b**ch up, and I’m on it twice,” she boasted.

  • Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus showed love in the rapper’s TikTok comments by calling the LP “really something beautiful.” It’s worth noting that the singer-actress has publicly voiced her support for Cardi, including on “Cattitude” when she said, “I love you, Nicki, but I listen to Cardi.”

  • 21 Savage

Cardi B and 21 Savage made headlines back in 2018 with their well-received “Bartier Cardi” collab, which appeared on her debut album, Invasion Of Privacy. It’s only right he circled back with a supportive nod to her new project as he alerted his 20+ million Instagram followers that his “sis” finally shared her sophomore effort.

  • Kehlani

Kehlani and Cardi made magic on her first album with “Ring,” and the collab was so good they had to run it back on the next one. The two linked up for “Safe” on AM I THE DRAMA? and Kehlani made sure to let her collaborator know how much she admires her work ethic, especially as a fellow mom.

The R&B songstress went all out with her congratulatory message dedicated to her, writing on Instagram: “congratulations my hearttttt. @iamcardib , watching you do this pregnant twice now? inspirational. my second time walking on to set and being MIND BLOWN seeing a little tiny person with a big ole belly on set for hours & hours being a complete joy. i’m really proud of you. i’m really honored to witness you. really inspired by you honestly, you’re such a f**kin powerhouse. you’ve built something that can never be taken away from you, all while being a BAD A** MOM! you deserve everything girlie. thanks for calling me again, we not the little Ring girls from 2018 anymore lol N U DESERVE TO FEEL SAFE ? love you , take ovaaaaaa.”

  • Safaree

Safaree gave his public co-sign of the new album on X, which was a particularly eye-catching post because he is Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend, and the two rapstresses have been at odds for several years. The fans in the replies caught on, as one person warned, “Oh they bout to come for your NECK!!”

  • Coi Leray

Coi Leray tapped into AM I THE DRAMA? right when it dropped and posted “Man Of Your Word” to her IG story.

  • Shakira

She’s a woman of a few words on social media, but her co-sign is powerful. Superstar Shakira posted Cardi’s LP just a few hours after it released and sent her 90+ million followers to the album on Spotify.

Cardi B And Kehlani Channel TLC’s “Creep” In New Music Video “Safe”

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Cardi B and Kehlani have brought their collab “Safe” to life, turning the standout track from Cardi’s sophomore album Am I The Drama? into a cinematic moment. In the music video, the “Up” rapper and “Folded” songstress tap into their inner TLC, recreating the iconic “Creep” scene with silky matching pajamas and a playful dance routine.

The clip opens with Cardi and Kehlani moving in sync as she delivers the hook: “I don’t need a rich ni**a, just somebody that can make me feel, safe/ I dealt with a couple ni**as, but nobody ever made me feel, safe like you/ ’Cause when I’m with you, I just know I’m fine/ You take all the pressure off my mind (all the time)” — with Kehlani echoing “safe” in the background.

As the storyline unfolds, Cardi takes on the role of a pregnant girlfriend to her on-screen partner. Their romance quickly turns dark after a heated argument between the two sends roses crashing to the floor and Williams storming out the door. Moments later, tragedy strikes when a gangster shows up at Cardi’s door and fatally shoots her.

Williams’ character returns home only to be distraught by the bloody aftermath. Watch below.

“Safe” featuring Kehlani hails from Am I The Drama? which dropped today (Sept. 19). Standing at 23 tracks, the project features a star-studded lineup including everyone from Lizzo to R&B/Pop icon Janet Jackson.

The LP has standouts like “Dead” and “Shower Tears,” both featuring Summer Walker, the aformentioned “Safe” with Kehlani, “Better Than You” with Cash Cobain, and “Nice Guy” with Tyla. In addition to “Safe,” the collaborative track “Principal” with Janet Jackson is another crowd favorite especially for the simple fact that Cardi was able to secure the “Pleasure Principle” icon, herself.

AITD also has cuts like the circulating songs, “Bodega Baddie” and “Imaginary Playerz,” as well as interesting titles like “Man of Your Word,” which could be an ode to her divorce with Offset, and the return of “WAP” featuring Megan Thee Stallion.

To further push the album, Cardi B announced her first-ever headlining Little Miss Drama Tour kicking off post-pregnancy in February and running through April 2026. She will be hitting the major cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Atlanta, and others.

Cardi hopped on X to remind her fans that she’s locked in, although expecting baby No. 4. “Album drops Friday! Thank you everybody for the love and support…by the time tour comes I’ll be doing splits, somersaults backflips and handstands,” she wrote. “I want this really bad and I’m on a very strict plan.. trust me I’m determined to give my fans the best album AND tour experience!!”

“I owe this to myself, and I owe this to my past. They’ve been waiting for such a long time. I know we don’t live for the fans, but I owe this to y’all,” she added.
