Cancer surgeon with 22 years of experience shares the ‘1 common habit’ silently destroying your immune system

Always scrolling late or binge-watching shows? Cancer surgeon Dr Tarang Krishna says proper sleep is the real key to keeping your immune system strong.

Always scrolling on your phone late at night or binge-watching shows till 2 AM? That ‘just one more episode’ habit might be silently hurting your immunity. Poor sleep makes you tired, stressed, and more prone to illnesses. Dr Tarang Krishna, cancer specialist and MD at Cancer Healer Centre, with more than 22 years of experience, shares in his December 2 Instagram post why catching quality sleep is the real key to keeping your immune system strong and your body healthy. (Also read: Surat paediatrician shares how too much love from grandparents can spoil kids; offers tips for parents to strike balance )

Prioritise sleep to recharge immunity and fight illnesses, advises Dr Krishna. (Unsplash)

Why is sleep so crucial for immunity

“You know the key to your immune system? And that key is sleep. Poor sleep weakens your immunity. When your sleep is disturbed, your body becomes more susceptible to fatigue, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and many other illnesses,” Dr Krishna explains.

He adds, “Our body has the natural ability to fight diseases, but we don’t use it properly. This is because during sleep time, we are often glued to our phones. To reduce inflammation in our body, we need proper sleep.”

How to strengthen your immunity through sleep

Dr Krishna further explains the science behind it, “When we stay awake, the hormone melatonin, which is the sleep hormone, doesn’t get a chance to work. And this is why our immune system cannot recharge. To strengthen our immunity, we need to let our system recharge, and proper sleep is essential for that.”

He advises prioritising consistent, uninterrupted sleep to allow the body to heal, recharge, and maintain a strong defence against illnesses.

Veteran Kannada actor ‘Mysore’ Srikantayya Umesh died on Sunday in Bengaluru at the age of 80. The comedy giant, who boasted of a six-decade-long career, had been suffering from cancer for a while now and died after prolonged illness and hospitalisation. Fans took to social media to pay tribute.

Veteran Kannada actor and comedian MS Umesh died in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Umesh dies at age 80

Umesh died on Sunday after he was recently admitted to the hospital, family sources confirmed to PTI. He had been suffering from cancer for a while and breathed his last at the hospital.

As soon as the news broke, fans mourned his death on social media. “M.S. Umesh, the giant of the comedy world in Kannada cinema, has left us all behind. M.S. Umesh, who stepped into the world of colours as the first hero of children’s films, acted in 350 films during his successful artistic life spanning 6 decades,” wrote one.

A fan reminisced, “His character in Venkata in Sankata movie was gem. Om Shanti Umesh sir.” Another thanked him for entertaining the audience all these years, writing, “Never deceiving art, breathing life into the roles given to him, making us laugh and smile, Umesh anna, who shone in those days, has bid goodbye to life… His acting will always remain alive.”

JD(S) leader and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy wrote, “Umesh would make audiences float in a sea of laughter through his fresh humour.”

MS Umesh’s legacy

‘Mysore’ Srikantayya Umesh, popularly known as MS Umesh or simply Umesh, first played the lead in Makkala Rajya (1960) after featuring in several stage shows as a child actor. Born on 24 April 1945 in Mysuru, he was only four when he played a role in Master K Hirannaiah’s theatre group. Despite his silver screen debut, Umesh faced a lull in his career and had to return to the theatre until Katha Sangama (1977).

His portrayal as Thimmarayi in the Munithaayi episode featuring Rajinikanth and Aarathi fetched him multiple laurels, and there was no looking back for him after that. Since then, he gained recognition through films like Nagara Hole (1978), Apoorva Sangama (1984), Shruthi Seridaaga (1987), Neenu Nakkare Haalu Sakkare (1993), and Venkata in Sankata (2007).

Throughout his career, Umesh worked with all the greats, including Rajkumar, Sivaji Ganesan, Vishnu Vardhan, Ambareesh, Srinath, Shankar Nag, Ananth Nag, Arvind Ramesh, B Saroja Devi, and Bharathi.

Does ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Have Cancer? – Hollywood Life

Grey’s Anatomy star James Pickens Jr., who has been on the show for 20 years, is now the epitome of the famous phrase, “life imitates art,” but for an unfortunate reason. Like his character on the show, the 73-year-old actor revealed that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“We caught it really early, and so they thought that would be the best route to take,” Pickens Jr. explained during an interview with BlackHealthMatters.com in November 2025. “I do have a rare variant that you don’t see very often. They wanted to err on the side of caution and keep an eye on it. It was rare enough that they wanted to make sure that they were crossing all the T’s and dotting all their I’s. But they hadn’t seen one that was detected as early as mine.”

Below, learn more about Pickens Jr.’s health in reality versus that of his on-screen character.

Who Is James Pickens Jr.’s Grey’s Anatomy Character?

Pickens Jr. plays the role of Dr. Richard Webber, whose cancer diagnosis was unveiled during the season 22 midseason finale. His specific type of cancer was not immediately revealed.

Does James Pickens Jr. Really Have Cancer?

Yes, Pickens Jr. revealed his prostate cancer was diagnosed early during a November 2025 interview with BlackHealthMatters.com.

“It’s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family,” the actor explained. “My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it. I’ve got a 90-year-old first cousin, who’s still alive, actually; he had it. His son has it. A couple of his brothers had it. No one, as far as I know, has succumbed to it.”

The Cleveland, Ohio, native received his diagnosis in 2024. During his interview, he recalled going back to the doctor and, “when my PSA numbers came back, my primary said, ‘Yeah, you know what? It’s ticked up some more. I want to send you back to the urologist.”

“The urologist looked at him and said,” Yeah, there’s something here. Let’s do an MRI,’ which we did, and it revealed, as he called it, something suspicious,” Pickens Jr. said.

What Is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is when cells within the male reproductive gland, the prostate, grow out of control. Pickens Jr. emphasized that early detection of a tumor is essential in battling the disease.

“I started getting my annual physical 34 years ago. And I started my PSA testing when I was 41; I’m 73 now,” he said. “My urologist said. ‘Because you were so diligent in that piece of your health, it was to your advantage. We were able to catch it so early because you were being tested.”

Is James Pickens Jr. Leaving Grey’s Anatomy?

Grey’s Anatomy fans are now concerned that Pickens Jr. will leave the show. Since the actor has been managing the illness since 2024 and caught the cancer early, it doesn’t appear that he will leave the series anytime soon. Only time will tell, though.

James Pickens Jr., who’s best known for playing Dr. Richard Webber in Grey’s Anatomy, shocked fans upon revealing his cancer diagnosis. What made the news even more unsettling was that his on-screen character’s cancer battle was revealed in the season 22 midseason finale. As fans grapple with the revelation, many are wondering whether or not James is leaving the show.

The actor spoke with BlackHealthMatters.com in November 2025 to discuss his illness.

“It’s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family,” James pointed out.

Below, Hollywood Life has the latest updates about James’ presence on Grey’s Anatomy.

Does James Pickens Jr. Actually Have Cancer? What Type He Has

Yes, as previously noted, James was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2024.

“We caught it really early, and so they thought that would be the best route to take,” the Ohio native told BlackHealthMatters.com. “I do have a rare variant that you don’t see very often. They wanted to err on the side of caution and keep an eye on it. It was rare enough that they wanted to make sure that they were crossing all the T’s and dotting all their I’s. But they hadn’t seen one that was detected as early as mine.”

During the interview, James recalled going back to the doctor and, “when my PSA numbers came back, my primary said, ‘Yeah, you know what? It’s ticked up some more. I want to send you back to the urologist.”

“The urologist looked at him and said,” Yeah, there’s something here. Let’s do an MRI,’ which we did, and it revealed, as he called it, something suspicious,” James elaborated. “They scheduled a biopsy, which revealed a tumor.”

Is James Pickens Jr. Leaving Grey’s Anatomy?

At the time of publication, James has not announced his departure from Grey’s Anatomy.

How Is James Pickens Jr. Doing With His Cancer Battle?

James appears to be managing his prostate cancer well. According to BlackHealthMatters, he underwent a prostatectomy to fight the disease, and he was hospitalized for about a day.

Jo Wilson’s Life Hangs in the Balance as Richard Webber Faces Cancer

by jummy84 November 14, 2025
written by jummy84

What To Know

  • The fall finale ends with one doctor’s life in jeopardy and another facing a scary diagnosis.
  • Plus, we saw the continued impact of a marital separation and other characters finding blossoming romance.
  • The series returns to resolve these cliffhangers on January 8, 2026.

[Warning: The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 6, “When I Crash.”]

The Wilson-Lincoln family just can’t catch a break. In Thursday’s (November 13) fall finale, Jo Wilson’s (Camilla Luddington) condition deteriorated rapidly after she began experiencing shortness of breath, and Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) discovered that her heart was failing. Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack), who’d just gotten on his feet after his own brush with death in the explosion incident, was a nervous wreck, but he supported Jo’s decision to pursue the most conservative treatment option(s) — first, mere medication, and second, a pump that would allow her twins to keep cooking a while longer.

However, neither proved to be feasible, and by the end of the episode, Jo was fading on the table, and Ndugu was forced to begin a C-section, despite not having done one since he was in medical school.

From the preview for the season’s return, on January 8, it looks like Jo’s survival is very, very questionable. This season started with Jo as one of the safest characters of all, and now? Things have turned completely upside down.

Also in jeopardy is Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), who, after lashing out at Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) a bit too much for anyone’s liking, revealed that this behavior is owed to something else. No, he’s not drinking again; rather, he’s been diagnosed with cancer. (It’s notable that the actor, who survived his own bout with prostate cancer, used this story opportunity to raise awareness for prostate cancer and the Black Health Matters organization in a closing PSA.)

Elsewhere in the episode, Wes Bryant (Trevor Jackson) proved his depth of character when helping Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd) treat a nonverbal autistic patient with a head laceration whose caretaker was in a touch-and-go surgery. Though Wes wanted to take their newfound bond to a new level — er, the level they actually started out on — she declined… but didn’t seem altogether disinterested.

Meanwhile, Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) had a moment of clarity of his own with the new intern, Dani Spencer (Jade Pettyjohn), who convinced him to try again on a difficult preoperative procedure and earned him a spot in a surgery, which he also got her into as thanks. And Benson “Blue” Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) and Kavita Mohanty (Anita Kalathara) finally gave in to their very obvious attraction to one another with a classic elevator kiss moment.

Last but not least, the separation between Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) took some wild new turns when she showed up to his trailer with their kids and found Nora (Floriana Lima) naked in his bed. After they worked together to pull off a risky rescue of a woman bleeding out beneath a bus, they had a heart-to-heart but agreed they weren’t rushing into things… with other people? With their divorce? All of it? Unclear. But whatever it is, Nora decided to call it off with Owen because she simply needs Teddy more than him. After all, Teddy’s literally the only one in the world who can fix her actual broken heart.

James Van Der Beek is parting ways with some of his Dawson’s Creek memorabilia amid his cancer battle.

The 48-year-old actor, who has been battling Stage 3 colorectal cancer, is selling several items from TV teen drama Dawson’s Creek and movie Varsity Blues in a partnership with auction website Propstore, where interested buyers can place their bids.

“I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now,” Van Der Beek told Propstore in a statement.

“And while I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore’s auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years.”

Van Der Beek, who starred as Dawson Leery in the hit show, is auctioning off items including wardrobe, props and set pieces, like Dawson Leery’s flannel, the necklace he wore in the series before he gifted it to Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) and Van Der Beek’s chair back from the set of the series.

All of the proceeds from the items sold will go to Van Der Beek to help “with the financial cost of fighting cancer,” People reports.

Van Der Beek first revealed that he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer last November in an interview with People.

“I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” the star told the publication. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

The actor did not give further details on his diagnosis, but shared in an Instagram post: “I’m in a good place and feeling strong.”

“I’ve been dealing with this privately until now, getting treatment and dialing in my overall health with greater focus than ever before,” he continued on Instagram. “It’s been quite the initiation, and I’ll tell you more when I’m ready.”

In the post, he said he decided to make the announcement before he’d planned, explaining that while he wanted to talk about it “at length” with People, another publication was getting set to run the story.

“That plan had to be altered early this morning when I was informed that a tabloid was going to run with the news,” Van Der Beek wrote.

An increasing number of younger people are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer in Canada and the United States — even though overall cases and deaths have fallen in recent years.

According to a 2023 study from the American Cancer Society, one in five cases diagnosed in 2019 were in people under 55, almost double the rate of 11 per cent in 1995.

It’s a similar situation in Canada, where colorectal cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Colorectal cancer starts in the colon or rectum, which are part of the large intestine, and can also spread to other parts of the body.

Unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol consumption increase the risks for this type of cancer, but family history is also a contributing factor.

James Van Der Beek is auctioning off Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues props to help with the financial burden of his cancer battle.

James Van Der Beek is selling film and TV props amid cancer battle

The 48-year-old actor – who was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer last year – is giving film and TV fans a chance to own memorabilia from his career with 100 percent of the proceeds from the items helping alleviate the cost of his health struggles.

He told PEOPLE magazine: “I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now.

“While I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore’s auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years.”

The items from James’ personal collection will be available next month in Propstore’s Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction from December 5 to 7.

Many of the items are being made public for the first time, with wardrobe, props and set pieces from the actor’s career.

One major piece of TV history being offered is the necklace Dawson gave Joey for prom in Dawson’s Creek, which is estimated to detch between $26,400 and $52,800.

The collection includes items from throughout the series – which ran from 1998 to 2003 – including James’ pilot episode costume, which could bring in almost $4,000.

There are also items from 1999 movie Varsity Blues, including his film-worn West Caana Coyotes Hat, and cleats.

Anyone interested in bidding for pieces of the collection can register now ahead of live in-room bidding in London on December 6, while global bidding will be available until the end of play on December 7.

In September, James made a surprise appearance during a Dawson’s Creek reunion, having had to drop out due to suffering from “two stomach viruses”.

However, he shocked fans on the night at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City on Monday (22.09.25) when he made a virtual appearance at the event in support of the F Cancer charity.

In a pre-recorded video, which was projected onto the stage, he said: “I have been looking forward to this night for months and months ever since my angel Michelle Williams said she was putting it together.

“I can’t believe I’m not there. I can’t believe I don’t get to see my cast mates, my beautiful cast in person.

“And just I want to stand on that stage and thank every single person in the theatre for being here tonight. From the cast to the crew to everybody who’s doing anything and has been so generous, and especially every single last one of you – you are the best fans in the world.

“Thank you for coming. It’s just absolutely humbling just how much you did for this night, and I just want to say thank you. Thank you to every single person here.”

Gastroenterologist suggests 6 science-backed snacks that can fight colon cancer: ‘Watermelon with lime to…’

by jummy84 November 9, 2025

Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is the third most common cancer globally, with more than 1.9 million new cases and more than 930,000 deaths globally in 2020, according to the World Health Organisation. It accounts for approximately 10% of all cancer cases and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.

Therefore, educating oneself about this cancer is a need of the hour, so that you can protect your colon and opt for a healthy lifestyle. In a November 8 Instagram post, Dr Joseph Salhab, a board-certified gastroenterologist and popular health influencer known as @thestomachdoc on social media, listed 6 snacks you can include in your daily diet to protect yourself from colon cancer.

6 snacks to fight colon cancer

Sharing the list of 6 snack combinations to fight colon cancer, Dr Salhab noted, “These foods had some of the strongest effects in lowering colon cancer risk.”

Additionally, he pointed out that these recommendations are science-backed, as some are included in a May 2023 meta-analysis: “Different types of fruit intake and colorectal cancer risk,” published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology.

Here are the 6 snacks Dr Salhab recommended:

1. Watermelon with lime

The first snack the gastroenterologist suggested in the video is eating watermelon with lime. According to him, the combination contains lycopene and vitamin C, which helps reduce the risk of colon cancer.

2. Walnuts with yoghurt

Next, he suggested having a handful of walnuts with some yoghurt. It contains omega-3 and probiotics, which can be beneficial for your colon health.

3. Avocado with salsa

The gastroenterologist recommended having avocado with salsa. In the video, he can be seen enjoying this combination on a toasted slice of bread. According to him, avocados and salsa are rich in fibre and prebiotics, which help boost immune cells in the colon.

4. Blueberry and chia seeds

Dr Salhab suggested making a blueberry chia pudding with blueberries and chia seeds. They have anthocyanins and soluble fibre, which nourish protective bacteria present in the colon.

5. Apples and cinnamon

Take a few slices of apple and sprinkle them with cinnamon. This snack contains pectin fibre and polyphenols, which produce more butyrate for anti-inflammatory effects.

6. Kiwi with honey yoghurt

Lastly, Dr Salhab recommended having kiwi with some yoghurt drizzled with honey, as the fibre present in kiwi can repair DNA damage in the colon.
