Several health studies have linked the consumption of sugar with many diseases. A 2022 Harvard Health report states that consumption of added sugar leads to higher blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes, and fatty liver disease, which are in turn linked to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke.

Scared of these alarming effects of sugar consumption, many people swap it with artificial sweeteners. But are they any better? Did you know your sweet tooth could also be causing ageing in your brain?

Are sweeteners speeding up your brain’s ageing?

In an Instagram post shared on September 11, Dr Sanjay Bhojraj, MD, an interventional cardiologist and functional medicine doctor, highlighted the fact that sweeteners may be harming our brains and explained how they cause brain ageing. He wrote, “Small swaps today. Stronger brain tomorrow.”

Dr Bhojraj explained, “Most people swap sugar for artificial sweeteners, believing they’re the safer choice. But new research is sounding the alarm.”

He cited a neurology study conducted with 12,000+ adults and pointed out: “Could artificial sweeteners be stealing years from your brain? Researchers observed clear patterns in cognitive health. This isn’t just about replacing sugar. I’ve seen this story before: choices that look harmless end up silently costing health and longevity.”

Harmless choices silently cost health and longevity

The cardiologist warned, “Artificial sweeteners can disrupt metabolism, interfere with the gut-brain connection, and add long-term stress to your cardiovascular and cognitive systems. What feels like a safer choice today may quietly accelerate decline tomorrow.”

Additionally, he highlighted several facts associated with sweeteners that prove that they are harmful to the brain. Here’s what the expert said:

  • High sweetener intake was linked to a 62 percent faster cognitive decline
  • Equivalent to 1.6 years of accelerated brain ageing
  • Strongest impact on people under 60 and those with diabetes

He added, “The good news? Longevity isn’t about luck – it’s about making smarter decisions based on science, not shortcuts.”

Cardiologist warns ‘even moderate alcohol can literally shrink your brain’: Long-term use may lead to dementia

Dr Alok Chopra, a cardiologist shared in a September 10 Instagram post: “Protecting your heart means protecting your brain. Alcohol quietly sabotages both.” He wrote in his caption, “Moderation isn’t protection — alcohol can still shrink your brain.” Also read | Neuroscientist warns ‘avoid these 3 drinks because they are damaging your brain’

Dr Chopra has explained that even ‘moderate’ use of alcohol affects your brain. (Freepik)

Dr Chopra went on to explain how even ‘moderate’ use of alcohol can ‘literally shrink your brain’. According to him, chronic alcohol use reduces brain volume, affecting decision-making and memory. Dr Chopra shared that alcohol alters sleep cycles, and impairs memory, attention, and executive function, potentially contributing to dementia.

Moreover, alcohol increases anxiety, depression, and mood swings while reducing impulse control, he added. Dr Chopra further explained that alcohol triggers inflammation, damaging neurons and increasing the risk of neurodegenerative conditions.

He shared the five effects of alcohol on the brain:

Brain shrinkage

“Chronic alcohol use reduces overall brain volume. Frontal Lobe (decision-making) and hippocampus (memory) are most affected. Resulting in memory issues, poor focus and slower thinking,” Dr Chopra said.

Neuro-inflammation

He added, “Alcohol triggers inflammation, damaging neurons and neural pathways. It is also known to increase the risks of neurodegenerative conditions over time.”

Sleep disruption

According to Dr Chopra, “Alcohol alters sleep cycles, reducing REM ( rapid eye movement) and deep sleep. Poor sleep affects memory, mood, and the brain repair processes.”

Cognitive decline

He said, “Alcohol impairs working memory, attention span, and executive function. Long-term use may contribute to alcohol-related dementia.”

Emotional and behavioural changes

Dr Chopra said, “It increases anxiety, depression, and mood swings and reduces impulse control and heightens risk-taking behaviour.”

Bollywood veteran actor Jackie Shroff, fondly known as Jaggu Dada, is well known for his social initiatives. Along with supporting various charitable causes, he often urges people to plant trees and care for the environment. Recently, he shared a powerful video highlighting a different social concern, the chaos of Mumbai’s traffic. In the clip, Jackie expressed anger after witnessing an ambulance stuck in a heavy jam, fearing that the patient inside might lose their life due to the delay.

The actor posted the video on his Instagram handle, capturing the tense situation. From inside his car, he can be heard saying in frustration, “He will die on the way. Roads should be made properly, and people should understand. But where is their brain?” Jackie criticized the drivers blocking the ambulance, urging them to give way and recognize that it was a matter of someone’s life and death. His emotional reaction struck a chord with many viewers.

Netizens quickly began reacting to the clip. One user suggested, “Dada, please make a video on the quality of the roads too. The potholes themselves cause half the traffic jams.” Another commented, “Wow Dada, well said,” while several others tagged Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, urging Jackie to raise the issue of road construction with him. Some praised the actor for using his platform to highlight such a serious problem that affects countless lives every day.

On the professional front, Jackie Shroff was last seen in a cameo role in the film Tanvi the Great. Up next, he will appear in Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday’s upcoming movie Tu Meri Main Tera, Main Tera Tu Meri, produced by Karan Johar and slated for a December 31, 2025, theatrical release. He is also part of the star-studded cast of Welcome to the Jungle, alongside Akshay Kumar. Even as he continues to work in films, Jackie remains committed to social causes, using his voice to call attention to pressing issues like traffic mismanagement and public safety.

Pushkin Industries Revs Fall Podcast Slate; Inside David Byrne’s Brain

Pushkin Industries is revving up a broad slate of shows for the fall as the audio studio looks to capitalize on the “network effect” among its creators and hosts that has been built up since the company’s founding in 2018.

Eric Sandler, chief strategy officer for Pushkin, discusses the company’s business vision, growth drivers and outlook in an interview on the latest episode of “Daily Variety” podcast. Among the highlights of Pushkin’s slate is a look back at “The Big Short” with author Michael Lewis. Pushkin will release the first audiobook edition of Lewis’ book, and Lewis will host a companion podcast to revisit the key events and key players of the 2008 mortgage crisis. The 2010 book led to the 2015 feature adaptation starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell and Brad Pitt.

“It speaks to the depth of the content that the creators we work with make,” Sandler says. “It’s ten years since the film, but it’s almost like a content pipeline reversal. Fifteen years ago, it was a best selling book. Ten years ago it was an Oscar winning film, and next month it’s going to be a companion podcast with an audiobook,” Sandler says. “It’s still as relevant today as it was when he wrote it.”

Sandler points to another example of what he calls Pushkin’s “network effect” to illustrate how the company uses audio as the content hub from which other media extensions sprout. Gladwell did a “Revisionist History” series “The Bomber Mafia” in 2021. It was then turned into a Pushkin audiobook. “And we did a little bit of a reversal of the pipeline, and we sold the print rights, and then it got optioned by A24 for TV-film,” Sandler says. “And so we want to create more opportunities for more storytellers to use this as a testing ground for content, really drive home really impactful stories, and be able to explore the funnel in a different way.”

David Byrne, as profiled in Variety‘s Sept. 2 issue.

Also in the episode, Jem Aswad, Variety‘s executive editor of music, details his recent sit-down with seminal musician David Byrne. As a longtime fan, Aswad brings great perspective to the profile of the former Talking Heads frontman published in Variety‘s Sept. 2 print edition and on Variety.com on Sept. 5. Meeting Byrne at his office was like getting a glimpse inside the psyche of an artist who has forged a sui generis career exploring music and storytelling in many different styles and forms, Aswad says.

Byrne’s “office is downtown New York, as you would expect. Of course, he rides his bike there. He rides his bike everywhere. It’s a loft-like space,” Aswad explains. “Walking in there is this vast floor to ceiling wall of shelves that are just loaded with stuff. And it’s sort of like looking at his brain, because it’s tons of vinyl and tons of CDs and tons of DVDs. There was a Grammy. There was an Oscar. I think there was a VMA Moonman as well. There were a couple of other things in there, but most striking were anatomical models. There were a couple of the human brain, and he actually opened the ‘American Utopia’ Broadway show, holding up a brain and talking about how our brains work.”
