Neurologist warns against these 3 simple habits that can damage your brain: ‘Wearing headphones to bed leads to…’

Brain health is a crucial element of your overall wellbeing, as your brain controls all bodily functions and mental processes, including movement, thoughts, emotions, and memory, among others.

If you are one of those people who wear headphones to bed, you should know that loud sounds can damage the hair cells in your inner ear and over time can raise your risk of hearing loss and dementia. (Freepik)

While diet, exercise, and rest are important components of maintaining brain health, your lifestyle habits also significantly impact your brain’s well-being. Sometimes, however, there are some inconsequential practices that we believe do no harm, but are risking cognitive decline and brain disorders.

3 things that can harm your brain

In a November 4 Instagram post shared by Dr Bing, MD, MPH, a neurologist and biostatistician, he listed three things that he absolutely avoids as a neurologist and recommends others avoid as well. The habits include practices such as wearing headphones for extended periods or to bed, neglecting gum health, and sitting on the toilet for an excessive amount of time. Here’s how they damage your brain.

1. Wearing headphones to bed

Dr Bing cautioned against wearing headphones to bed. Here’s why: “If you are one of those people who wear headphones to bed, just make sure that the sounds that you’re playing are quiet and not loud because loud sounds can damage the hair cells in your inner ear and over time can raise your risk of hearing loss and dementia.”

Moreover, the neurologist emphasised that wearing earbuds and headphones for extended periods can trap moisture and bacteria. This can increase the risk of developing an ear infection.

“If you’re listening to loud sounds during sleep, it might interrupt your deep sleep and disrupt your lymphatic system, which is your brain’s nightly cleaning cycle that cleans out toxins,” he added.

2. Ignoring gum health

Next, the neurologist advised against ignoring gum health. Sharing his routine, Dr Bing revealed, “Every night, I floss and I water floss and then I brush because recent studies have shown that gum health might be related to someone’s brain health.”

The neurologist cited a 2025 study which found: “People with more gum disease and cavities had almost double the risk of stroke, and other studies have linked poor oral health to dementia and cognitive decline.”

3. Sitting on the toilet for more than 5 minutes

Lastly, the neurologist advised against sitting on the toilet for more than 5 minutes. He divulged, “This is because sitting too long and straining can cause blood to pool in your legs and drop your blood pressure, especially if you have certain underlying conditions, and not enough blood going to your brain can cause someone to faint.”

Unfortunately, the neurologist revealed that he sees such examples almost every week. However, he excused those with chronic bowel disease, as they might not have a choice, but otherwise, he cautioned, “Do not linger on the toilet.”

Noida psychologist shares how constant screen time is causing ‘Popcorn Brain Syndrome’ in teenagers and young adults

by jummy84 November 2, 2025

With screen time at an all-time high, many youngsters are constantly switching between apps, videos, and games. This digital overload is affecting focus, memory, and mental health. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Jaya Sukul, Clinical Psychologist and Founder of Headspace Healing, Noida, sheds light on the emerging “popcorn brain” syndrome and how it impacts young minds. (Also read: Psychiatrist shares how late-night scrolling, anxiety and stress are fueling a sleep crisis among Gen Z )

Dr Jaya Sukul explains ‘Popcorn Brain Syndrome’ and how to reclaim focus in a screen-filled world. (Freepik)

What is Popcorn Brain?

“Popcorn Brain isn’t your brain literally popping,” says Dr Sukul. “It’s the sensation of your neural circuits being overstimulated by constant digital inputs. You may find yourself jumping quickly from one thing to the next, struggling to focus, and feeling restless offline because life seems slower than your online feed.”

She explains that modern lifestyles, social media, and continuous digital exposure have reshaped brain activity. “Your brain craves novelty, and devices exploit this craving, keeping you in a state of hyper-alertness. Over time, this can drain your energy, increase stress, reduce focus, and even affect sleep,” Dr Sukul adds.

Who is affected?

While Popcorn Brain is most commonly seen in teenagers and young adults, Dr Sukul warns it is also affecting people aged 30-45. “It’s not the same as internet addiction,” she clarifies. “Internet addiction is a clinical syndrome that disrupts work, relationships, and daily life. Popcorn Brain affects your quality of life, attention, and emotional well-being, but it doesn’t necessarily ruin relationships or career performance.”

Symptoms to watch for include:

  • Irritability and anxiety
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Difficulty focusing or paying attention
  • Feeling hyper-vigilant or stressed
  • Life offline feels dull or uninteresting
To address 'popcorn brain', Dr Sukul advises creating screen-free zones, taking breaks from devices, practising mindfulness, and consuming media intentionally.(Google Gemini)

How to ease Popcorn Brain

Dr Sukul suggests several strategies to reclaim focus and peace of mind:

1. Create screen-free zones: Designate areas in your home where phones and devices aren’t allowed.

2. Schedule device breaks: Take intentional breaks from screens to reset your brain.

3. Practice mindfulness: Meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises can help improve focus and calm overstimulation.

4. Work in focused bursts: Short periods of concentration followed by breaks enhance productivity.

5. Be intentional with media consumption: Ask yourself, “Who is in control, me or my phone?”

6. Avoid mindless scrolling: Passive browsing actively overstimulates your brain and reinforces Popcorn Brain symptoms.

“By consciously managing digital consumption and including mindfulness practices, you can reclaim your attention, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being,” Dr Sukul concludes.

Kim Kardashian recently revealed her brain aneurysm diagnosis in the season 7 premiere of The Kardashians. Know more about what it is and why it could be scary.

ICYMI, Kim Kardashian has revealed a shocking health update – she has been diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, which her doctors link to stress from her high-profile divorce with Kanye West. The 45-year-old reality TV star opened up about her condition in the season 7 premiere of The Kardashians, which aired on October 22. While aneurysms can often go unnoticed, they carry serious risks if they rupture.

Dr Kunal Sood, an anesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine specialist, explains the key risk factors for brain aneurysms, as well as how they are detected and effectively managed. In an Instagram video posted on October 25, the doctor explains what makes an aneurysm dangerous and shares the treatment options that can help minimise the risks.

What is brain aneurysm?

According to Dr Sood, aneurysms are more common than people think, and explains, “It forms when a weak spot develops in a blood vessel and the brain, and slowly balloons outward, like a thin patch on a worn balloon.” However, most aneurysms are harmless and often discovered by chance – the real danger begins when one ruptures. The doctor warns, “If one ruptures, it can cause bleeding around the brain, which is called a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which can be life-threatening.”

Risk factors

Dr Sood highlights the following factors that can increase the likelihood of aneurysms forming or rupturing:

  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Family history of aneurysms
  • Certain genetic conditions such as polycystic kidney disease or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

Detection and management

According to Dr Sood, aneurysms are usually detected through MRI or CT angiography. Once identified, their management depends on size and risk. Small, unruptured aneurysms are often carefully monitored, while higher-risk cases may require surgical clipping or endovascular coiling to prevent rupture.

Kim Kardashian is an open book. The Kardashians reality TV star has juggled motherhood and her divorce from ex Kanye “Ye” West with brand-new ventures in Hollywood, business and prison reform. While teaming up with Hulu again for All’s Fair, Kim revealed during the season 7 premiere of her family’s series that she had a brain aneurysm in the past — and pointed to the stress from her and Ye’s divorce.

This wasn’t the first time that Kim revealed a health issue. Below, read on to learn about Kim’s psoriasis, brain aneurysm and more.

Kim Kardashian Was Diagnosed With Psoriasis

The Kardashians star first began to deal with psoriasis in her mid twenties. She wrote about her initial flare-up via a blog post on her sister, Kourtney Kardashian‘s website, Poosh, in 2019. “When I was 25, I had my first psoriasis flare-up. I got a common cold, and since psoriasis is an autoimmune condition, this triggered it,” Kim penned at the time.

Before Kim lived in a lavish California mansion, she lived in an apartment and was able to get help from her dermatologist neighbor. “It was all over my stomach and legs. Luckily, in my apartment complex at the time, my neighbor was a dermatologist,” she explained in the same post. “I showed it to him, and he said to come into the office and he would give me a shot of cortisone and then hopefully it would go away (since it was my first big outbreak). I did this and my psoriasis completely went away for about five years.”

Psoriasis is known as a skin disease that can cause “a rash with itchy, scaly patches” as reported by the Mayo Clinic. Over the years, Kim has experienced these rashes and has documented her outbreaks through photos and videos shared on social media. Later in the blog post, the SKIMS co-founder revealed that she a consistent “spot” that will often reoccur on her right lower leg. “I can always count on my main spot on my right lower leg, which consistently stays flared up. I have learned to live with this spot without using any creams or medication—I just deal,” she wrote. “Sometimes I cover it up and sometimes I don’t. It doesn’t really bother me.”

Kim inherited the skin condition from her mother, Kris Jenner, who only passed down the trait to Kim. Additionally, Kim suffers from psoriatic arthritis, a type of arthritis triggered by her skin condition. Most recently, in October 2023, she opened up to Refinery29 about her chronic condition. “I’m still very confused about my psoriasis and what triggers it,” Kim told the outlet. “Sometimes I’ll be completely stressed out and I’ll be completely clear with my psoriasis. Sometimes I’ll be zen as can be, not a care in the world, and my psoriasis will completely flare up. They say it should be the opposite. I’ve kind of given up on trying to figure it out.”

Kim Kardashian’s Brain Aneurysm: Symptoms & the Suspected Cause

During the October 2025 season 7 premiere of The Kardashians, Kim revealed that doctors found a brain aneurysm. According to Mayo Clinic, a brain aneurysm is considered common and is described as a “a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain.”

In one clip from the show, Kim was seen going through an MRI scanner. She later told her family that a “little” aneurysm was found. After asking “why the f**k” it happened to her, doctors told Kim that aneurysms are typically cause by stress.

An aneurysm that has not ruptured typically doesn’t have symptoms, but they’re found in an imaging test. A ruptured aneurysm, however, is more serious and can cause a severe, sudden headache, nausea and vomiting, a stiff neck, blurred or double vision, sensitivity to light, confusion and even a seizure, per Mayo Clinic.

Kim Kardashian’s Preeclampsia and Placenta Accreta

Not only has the SKKN BY KIM founder suffered from psoriasis, but she also experienced various complications during her prior pregnancies. Kim gave birth to her daughter, North West, in 2013 and her son, Saint West, in 2015. Due to her complications during those two pregnancies, the Selfish author chose to use a surrogate to have her youngest children Chicago (b. 2018) and Psalm (b. 2019).

Kim had to give birth to North about six weeks early due to suffering from preeclampsia. The Cleveland Clinic reports that preeclampsia is known to be a “serious blood pressure” condition and can threaten the life of both the mother and child. In December 2019, Kim shared a video via Instagram explaining what she had experienced during those pregnancies.

Not only did Kim have preeclampsia, but she also suffered from placenta accreta during the pregnancies. This can occur when the placenta does not detach and remains attached to the uterus. “I actually had to have five different operations within a year and a half to fix the damage that all of that did inside,” the makeup maven said in the clip. Eventually, Kim used her remaining two embryos to conceive both Chicago and Psalm via a surrogate.

Taylor Swift Donates $100K to Young Fan With Brain Cancer

by jummy84 October 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Taylor Swift is keeping her giving streak going by donating a life-changing chunk of change to Lilah, a 2-year-old Swiftie who’s battling brain cancer.

The pop star quietly contributed $100k to a GoFundMe page raising money for the toddler and her family as Lilah undergoes treatment for “a very rare aggressive form of brain cancer” with only “58 documented cases in the U.S. last year,” according to the fundraiser’s description. Shortly before she received the diagnosis, doctors had removed a mass that turned out to be a stage 4 tumor in her brain.

Along with her donation, Swift wrote, “Sending the biggest hug to my friend, Lilah! Love, Taylor.”

After noticing that the 14-time Grammy winner had donated, a wave of Swifties also joined the cause, leaving $13 contributions and adding supportive messages to Lilah inspired by Swift’s lyrics. “We protect the family,” one person wrote, quoting the singer’s The Life of a Showgirl track “Father Figure.”

“Lilah – Keep dancing through the lightning strikes until your sky is opalite!” another donor commented, referencing Showgirl‘s “Opalite.” “All of us Swifties are [rooting] for you.”

What makes the outpouring of love for Lilah even sweeter is how the little girl’s mom, Katelynn, has previously posted about how much her daughter loves Swift. “Lilah loves Taylor’s music and during her cancer treatment she always found joy in it,” Katelynn wrote on TikTok earlier in October, noting that Lilah thinks of Swift as her “friend.”

Swift is known for shelling out donations to people in need, and in June, she visited patients in a children’s hospital in Florida. Lilah’s treatment also isn’t the first cause the Eras Tour headliner has inspired fans to support. This past month, Swifties helped raise $2 million for the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s otter conservation efforts after Swift sported one of the organization’s vintage T-shirts.

Kim Kardashian Reveals She Experienced A Brain Aneurysm

According to TODAY, Kim Kardashian revealed her diagnosis during the recent season 7 premiere of ‘The Kardashians.’ In a clip from the show, Kardashian was seen undergoing an MRI where the aneurysm was apparently picked up. Per the outlet, an aneurysm is a “bulge or ballooning in the wall of a blood vessel,” which can occur in any part of the body and even be fatal. Additionally, the diagnosis can range from “having no symptoms for an unruptured aneurysm to a medical emergency for a ruptured one.”

“They’re like, ‘It’s just stress,’” Kardashian recalled of what doctors explained to her.

“I’m happy [the divorce] is over. People think that I have the luxury of walking away… My ex will be in my life no matter what. We have four kids together,” Kardashian explained, seemingly revealing the cause of her stress.

Per the outlet, later in the episode, Kardashian even noted that she was experiencing a psoriatic flare-up. She reportedly added that the last time she experienced one was during her and Ye’s divorce.

“Everyone around can handle it, but like, protect my babies because they’re going to know things, they’re going to grow up, they’re going to see. My job as a mom is to just make sure that at a time when [Ye’s] behavior is happening, is just to make sure that they are protected,” she explained, seemingly referencing her ex as the cause for her present flare-up.

Taylor Swift Donates $100,000 to Swiftie Battling Brain Cancer

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

Earlier this month, a woman named Katelynn Smoot shared a heartwarming video of her young daughter, who is battling cancer, watching the music video for Taylor Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia.” In the clip, little Lilah points at the screen and says, “That’s my friend!”

The video quickly went viral, with fans flooding Smoot’s @standwithlilah social media page with messages of love and support for Lilah, who is fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer. Just a few weeks later, on Friday, Lilah received a touching surprise from her “friend” Swift — a $100,000 donation to her GoFundMe for medical care, and a sweet message: “Sending the biggest hug to my friend, Lilah! Love, Taylor.”

The quiet donation from Swift, spotted by Swifties, has inspired other fans of the pop star to follow suit by contributing to the fundraiser, each in increments of $13, in honor of Swift’s favorite number. As of publication, the fundraiser has raised over $167,000 in donations from more than 2,000 people.

After the six-figure donation, Smoot shared a video of herself and Lilah dancing to “The Life of Ophelia,” reacting to the news and sharing their gratitude for Swift’s generosity. “Thank you beyond words, Taylor Swift. We can now just focus on being here with our girl. Truly, we are so grateful… You have no idea what this means to our family,” she captioned the post.

On the page, Smoot has shared her and her daughter’s love for Swift — and how she birthed a “little Swiftie” after attending the Eras Tour while pregnant with her. “Lilah’s name was originally going to be Willow,” Smoot explained in one video, referencing the Folklore favorite. “We were set on that name my whole pregnancy, but ultimately ended on Lilah.”

Trending Stories

On the GoFundMe, which has been running since Lilah started chemotherapy in March, Smoot explained baby Lilah was diagnosed with a “very rare aggressive form of brain cancer” earlier this year after suffering a seizure. An MRI found a stage 4 tumor, which was removed in March, and she has since been undergoing chemo. In an August update, the Smoots updated donors about the treatment.

“After [an MRI and LP], she will start 6 weeks of proton radiation, where our family will have to travel to [Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia] for her to receive,” they wrote. “We will be a few hundred miles away from home. All the donations we receive will help us with travel expenses and paying bills as we are still out of work while Lilah is in treatment.”

Drinking in moderation? Study warns even small amounts of alcohol may seriously harm brain health

by jummy84 September 26, 2025

Published on: Sept 26, 2025 09:27 pm IST

Light drinking may cause cognitive decline, as a study revealed it carries a risk of developing neurodegenerative disease.

Much like alcohol has the heavy drinker, tipping over into borderline addiction, this beverage also has its share of light drinkers. Some people enjoy it casually, once in a while, at parties or restaurants, drinking in small amounts. Previous studies also suggested the likelihood of light drinking benefiting brain health.

Light drinking also causes cognitive decline!(Freepik)

ALSO READ: Study reveals this common social drink raises depression risk in women and it is not alcohol

But a recent study published in the BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine on September 23, 2025, debunked this idea that light consumption has any positive effect. In fact, it may actually act as a risk factor for neurodegenerative disease, dementia.

No safe limit for alcohol consumption?

Alcohol wrecks havoc on cognitive functions of brain. (Shutterstock)
Alcohol wrecks havoc on cognitive functions of brain. (Shutterstock)

Often, it is said that if something is consumed in moderation, the effects aren’t disastrous, as long as one adheres to the safe limits. Likewise, the same was applied to alcohol, too. But the protective effects seen in the previous studies from light alcohol consumption were actually false, as people who later developed dementia actually drank less in the years leading up to the diagnosis, so this challenges the previously established findings.

The researchers conducted a large study, including data from over half a million people, along with genetic information from 2 million more. In other words, the study was very extensive. The findings revealed that any alcohol consumption actually increases dementia risk. In addition, genetically predisposed people have a 15 to 16 per cent higher chance of developing dementia. Genetic risk here means being genetically vulnerable to alcohol use disorder.

What does it mean?

The findings imply that even small amounts of alcohol in the long run damage your brain, setting you up for dementia later in life. The researchers urged that public health advice should not depict light drinking as safe or harmless, as it too carries significant risks. This is particularly true for middle-aged adults who have a high risk of cognitive decline; cutting down on alcohol may help reduce the risks of dementia later in life.
