bitchy | Camila Cabello performed at a fan’s wedding after meeting her at a bar

One of my all-time favorite celebrity stories involves Keanu Reeves meeting a couple at a hotel bar in the UK. They were at the hotel for their wedding and invited him to the reception, which he ended up attending. Tom Hanks has also been known to do the same. He’s crashed at least two fan weddings. Queen Elizabeth surprised a couple by accepting an invitation to their wedding in Manchester. There’s just something about celebrities randomly deciding to mingle with us normies that is very endearing.

Camila Cabello has officially joined the Celebrity Wedding Crashers Club. While at a hotel bar in Iowa this past weekend, Camilla met a bride, Kelli, the night before the wedding. It was a chance encounter, but the bride told her that she was going to do her father-daughter dance to Camila’s song, “First Man.” Camila was so touched that she not only accepted an invitation to the wedding, but she also performed the song while Kelli and her dad did their dance.

Camila Cabello turned a chance fan encounter into an unforgettable wedding moment for a bride and her dad. The “Havana” singer, 28, met and chatted with Kelli Murray and her family at a hotel bar in Iowa on Friday night. Sept. 19, according to a pair of TikTok videos posted by Murray’s cousin. The bride told Cabello that she was planning to use her song “First Man” for her father-daughter dance, prompting the pop star to offer to come perform it live at the wedding on Saturday, Sept. 20.

One of the videos shows Cabello wearing a long black slip dress and holding a microphone at the wedding as she shared the story of how she came to be at Murray’s nuptials. She then noted, ” ‘First Man’ is a very special song to me. It’s a song that I wrote about my dad and about, you know, the moment that I get married.”

Cabello quickly added, “I have not been married yet,” joking, “I wonder if this will be my father-daughter dance [song].”

Continuing her story, Cabello said of her appearance at the wedding: “We kind of planned this, and it was kind of a little last-minute thing that we put together.”

She told Murray she was “really honored” to be a part of such a special moment.

“I’m such a daddy’s girl and I feel like your dad, if you’re lucky, is your first love, your first hero — the man that kind of sets the stage for the next man in your life,” she explained.

Cabello then said that she could tell from speaking with Murray and her dad, Mike, that he “loves the hell out of you.”

She ended her little speech by cheering, “To daddy’s girls!” before beginning her performance.

In the second video, Cabello can be seen singing as Murray and her dad swayed together on the dance floor. At one point, the Grammy nominee even worked the bride’s name into the lyrics of the song. Mike appeared visibly emotional, wiping away tears, as he danced with his daughter on her wedding day.

In the caption of the video, Murray’s cousin praised Cabello’s generous gesture, writing, “She was such a kind human and helped make pure magic last night.”

Cabello herself commented on the post, writing, “I’m honored I was a part of your family’s special day, u guys are precious 💕💕💕💕🥺😭.”

[From People]

This really was super sweet of Camila to do for this family. I genuinely enjoy when famous people do random sh-t like this. It’s endearing, but it also gives us a glimpse of who they are as real people. Obviously, not every famous person has the luxury of randomly popping by fan weddings, but it’s a testament to their stage presence when they can pull off something like this. Every time I hear about one of these encounters, I wonder what I have to do or where I have to be in order to magically run into someone like Sir Paul McCartney or the patron saint of my hometown, Long Island, Billy Joel. Kudos to Camila for accepting their request and really rolling with it. She did a fantastic job, and gave this couple a gift that they will remember forever.

bitchy | Tina Brown: King Charles is tired of ‘haughty, Hanoverian’ Prince William

by jummy84 September 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Two weeks ago, in the middle of Prince Harry’s four-day trip to the UK, Tina Brown’s Fresh Hell Substack landed like a bomb. Brown devoted a chunk of her Substack that week to analysis of King Charles’s relationships with his two sons. According to Brown, Charles is currently “less irritated” with Harry than Charles is with his dour, dull and lazy heir, Prince William. Brown’s colorful language and analysis of the situation gave the British media the perfect opening to breathlessly repeat everything she wrote with their own twist. Brown’s piece spelled out the big “secret” in the royalist media: that William’s laziness is a huge problem, and that William is basically having a nervous breakdown over Harry’s meeting with their father and Harry’s popularity within the UK. Well, I missed this, but Brown also wrote a New York Times column last week, published in the middle of the Trump state visit. Brown continued to analyze the melodramas within the House of Windsor.

… And yet, Charles’s first few years as monarch have been something of a quiet triumph. Seasoned by countless foreign tours, marinated in his constitutional role through years of practice and now magically aligned with so much of modern citizenry’s concerns (his decades-long campaign against pesticides and food dyes, by the way, now sounds like the sane bit of MAHA), Charles may be the last man standing who can exude global gravitas in the dumpster fire of our digitally dominated world.

It is all the more tragic that his diagnosis of an undisclosed cancer may make his reign a race against time, which added poignancy to his long-postponed reunion with his estranged son Harry last week. Charles knows that in these times of ugly political discord, a fractured royal family is a bad look. But it was also the fulfillment of paternal longing. It’s no secret that Charles desperately misses his prodigal son who, in earlier days, was always the fun, ebullient scamp compared with the haughtier, more Hanoverian William. It’s understandably enraging for William to see his treacherous younger brother, who spent the last five years trashing his family on TV and promoting a back-stabbing, best-selling book, bounding around the British charity circuit, doing a well-received side-dash to Ukraine and upstaging the photo ops of William’s own diligent engagements.

But Charles, I am told, is tiring of his elder son’s self-righteous intractability in the family feud, and wants to re-embrace Harry — if only he can keep his mouth shut. Harry’s subsequent interview with The Guardian, in which the imperturbably cocky prince said, “My conscience is clear,” suggests to his haters the futility of expecting Harry Hotspur to play the old royal game.

Here in America, we are obsessed with the process and drama of presidential politics, the burden of office, the daily colonoscopy of the White House press corps and the intolerable intrusions into our leaders’ private lives. Former First Ladies moan about the pressures they endure during hellish years in the White House bubble. But only the people born or married into the institution of monarchy know the real meaning of life in a cage, defined by duty, service and unceasing public scrutiny with no exit except death or flight. It’s more akin to taking holy orders than living a grand, red-carpet life waited on by obsequious servants — something Harry’s wife, Meghan, never understood.

[From The NY Times]

Again, this came out before this weekend’s briefing games, where the Daily Mail pitted palace sources against each other, all to further enrage the incandescent one. Charles has spent the past two weeks telegraphing the fact that he wants to reconcile with Harry in any way he can, and that the reconciliation should happen for several reasons, one of which is “putting Work-shy William on his heels.” It’s interesting, I guess, that the conversation has seemingly shifted in one month to this, where everyone is speaking openly about how much Charles hates William and considers William to be a huge disappointment. I really don’t trust William OR Charles here, they’re both clout-chasing Harry and using Harry’s name for their own deranged purposes.

bitchy | Did Prince Harry already register Archie to eventually attend Eton? No.

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Following Prince Harry and King Charles’s meeting at Clarence House two weeks ago, one story has been consuming the British press: “Harry wants to send his kids to English boarding schools!” Richard Eden at the Daily Mail has written multiple stories about this very odd rumor, and now Tom Sykes is getting into it on his Royalist Substack. When the initial story came out, one of the commenters made a brilliant deduction: that the rumors were started by Kensington Palace as a way to convince the Princess of Wales to send Prince George to Eton. Like, Kate is such a copy-keener, so if she heard that Meghan and Harry plan on sending Archie to Eton, Kate will finally agree to it. Anyway, Tom Sykes’s big exclusive is that Harry has already registered Archie for Eton.

Friends of Prince Harry have told The Royalist that Harry has put his son Archie, 6, down for Eton College. This could mean that the children of Prince Harry and Prince William will attend the elite all-boys’ Windsor boarding school at the same time. There are five years between Archie and George, but less than two years between Louis and Archie.

The background to all this is Harry’s visit to the U.K. last week, during which he met his father and, according to a report in the Mail, shared with the king his plans to educate his kids in the U.K. Then the British singer Joss Stone, who recently moved back to the U.K. after time abroad, told Hello! magazine about a chat she had with Harry at London’s WellChild Awards last week.

The singer, 38, said: “He asked about how we were settling back in and was genuinely interested in our move home. He’s just very warm and down to earth, as always. Maybe Harry will move back, too. That would be nice. He was saying how wonderful the schools are here, and how important community is for children. It was nice to share that with him because it’s exactly why we felt drawn to come back—for the kids to grow up surrounded by family, friends, and a strong sense of belonging, and most importantly in a safe environment.”

Now, an old school friend of both Harry and William exclusively tells me, “It’s no longer strictly necessary to put your kids’ names down at birth, but Harry has put Archie down. It’s fair to say he had mixed feelings about the school when he left, but looking back on it, he can appreciate the good.”

Another old schoolfriend told The Royalist: “For William and Harry, Eton is really the only sensible choice when it comes to British schools, because of security. There are so many high-profile and politically exposed kids there that the whole school has ridiculous security provisions already. It’s seven-day boarding, lots of kids fly back and forth at the beginning and end of term, so why shouldn’t Archie? The school certainly wouldn’t be prejudiced against him. Statistically, you have to imagine Eton would be a hell of a lot safer than an American school thanks to their gun laws.”

Harry’s people dismissed the story. I have approached Eton College for comment, but I assume I won’t be hearing from them.

[From The Royalist Substack]

Buried the lede: “Harry’s people dismissed the story.” Now, I think it’s perfectly possible that in 2019, when Archie was born, this was the general education plan, to eventually send him to Eton. But plans change and it’s not 2019 anymore. Still, I’m so curious about all of this bizarre focus on Archie’s education, and to a lesser extent, Lili’s education. Even if you think there might be some whiff of truth to this “Archie will go to Eton” story, why now when the child is only six years old? Why now when Archie has been living in America for over five years? Is this all projection because Kate absolutely refuses to send her kids to boarding school?

After Sykes published all of this, he added this note: “Harry’s team initially brushed off the query in vague terms. However, after publication of this story, a spokesperson for the Duke said: ‘Prince Harry has not put his son’s name down for Eton, nor does he have any plans to do so.’” Dollars to donuts, this whole storyline came from Kensington Palace, right?

The couple arrived together at around 5pm (Sept 20). They greeted well wishers in the backstage area and went to a VIP section. Meghan appeared briefly onstage with Harry as he gave an award to a first responder called Sam Dudley who helps colleagues with their mental health issues via a ‘Peer Support’ scheme. Meghan left the stage after Harry said to her ‘Oh hi hi hi’ and said nothing. She was criticized when she appeared at the same event two years ago for taking the spotlight away from those being paid tribute. Harry also made friends with and kissed the Sam’s dog, Rhonda. There was no sign of Kevin Costner himself at the event. Also spotted in the crowd were Rob Lowe, Oprah Winfrey and Maria Shriver.

bitchy | Angelina Jolie: ‘I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country’

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Angelina Jolie was in Italy over the weekend for the San Sebastian Film Festival. She premiered her latest film, Alice Winocour’s Couture, and Angelina will also receive the festival’s Donostia Award, which is sort of a lifetime achievement award. While Angelina’s film festival appearances always make news, this time, Jolie is making news for something she said during the press conference. She was asked about the state of America at this time, especially as an American artist.

Oscar-winning actor Angelina Jolie, who is at Spain’s San Sebastián Film Festival with Alice Winocour’s “Couture,” was asked a timely question at the festival’s press conference: What do you fear as an artist and an American? The actor sighed deeply and took a few moments to answer before saying, “It is a very difficult question.”

“I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country,” said Jolie. “I’ve always lived internationally, my family is international, my friends, my life… My worldview is equal, united, and international. Anything anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous. These are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. These are very, very heavy times we are living in together,” concluded the actor.

It’s important to note that Jolie’s comment on freedom of expression comes just days after Disney’s ABC took Jimmy Kimmel‘s popular late-night show off its schedule “indefinitely.” The decision came after one of the biggest owners of TV stations in the U.S., Nexstar Media, said it intended to preempt airings of the program following remarks the host made about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

[From Variety]

She’s right. I don’t recognize my country either. It’s like sane, normie Americans are the proverbial lobsters in gradually boiling water. One day, we’re just looking around and wondering when everything changed. It changed in 2016, btw. When a minority of American voters got that orange demon in office. Nothing has ever been the same since then. Angelina is lucky in a sense – she has other places to go and the means to take her family out of America. Reportedly, Angelina is waiting until her twins turn 18 and finish high school (next year) to move out of America permanently. Reportedly, she’s looking to move to the UK, but she also has a home in Cambodia and she does a lot of work in Ethiopia and Namibia.

bitchy | Prince Harry visited with the Duke of Kent & the Kent family during his UK trip

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Just days before Prince Harry traveled to England for a four-day blitz of events, his distant relative passed away. Katherine, the Duchess of Kent, died on September 4. Harry arrived in England on September 8th, but he had exited the UK and Ukraine at least one or two days before the duchess’s funeral on September 16th. Many royalists wondered aloud if Harry would find a way to stay in London for the duchess’s funeral. Alas, he did not, preferring to spend his birthday (the 15th) with his wife and children in California. Still, Harry did something really sweet when he was in town – he stopped by Kensington Palace to visit the Duke of Kent and the Kent family.

The Duke of Sussex has been back home in Montecito for nearly a week, but his visit to the UK is still making headlines. Harry spent four days in the London attending events close to his heart, including the WellChild Awards, where he gave an exclusive interview to HELLO!, and the Diana Award, before travelling to Ukraine on 12 September and then returning to Los Angeles.

Amid his packed schedule, the Duke managed to reunite with his father, King Charles, for the first time in nearly two years – and also made time for another deeply personal visit.

As revealed in this week’s episode of A Right Royal Podcast, a source confirmed to hosts Andrea Caamano and Emily Nash that although Harry missed the funeral of the Duchess of Kent, he travelled privately to Kensington Palace to “personally pay his respects and offer condolences” to the Duke of Kent.

“He has loved catching up with family, friends and colleagues,” a source close to the Duke adds. “His only regret was not being able to stay longer and see more people, but the meetings in Ukraine had been in the diary for a long time and it mattered to him to be there in person to see the Invictus Games Foundation’s growing work and the progress at Superhumans.”

The source added: “The whole trip felt like a real success for everyone involved. His passion for his patronages and the causes he cares about hasn’t dimmed one bit – he’s already buzzing to get back and do more.”

[From Hello]

That’s very sweet. I have no idea if Harry was genuinely close to the Kents, but he did invite them to his 2018 wedding, and that was one of the duchess’s few public appearances in the final decade of her life. Plus, I’m sure Harry saw the Duchess of Kent more like a dear friend to his mother. When you consider the Diana connection, it makes more sense that he wanted to pay his respects and visit with the Kents. I’m sure they understood why he couldn’t make the funeral as well – all things considered, I’m glad Harry wasn’t there. They would have made this poor woman’s funeral all about Harry and his grim, unmoisturized brother.

bitchy | The Secret Service were nuisances behind-the-scenes at the UK state banquet

Donald Trump is not a gourmand. The man loves a Big Mac and french fries. He reportedly likes a well-done steak, hard as a brick, and he loves Doritos. His favorite drink in the world is Diet Coke. What I’m trying to say is that it’s a fool’s errand for world leader to try to impress Trump with a world-class menu at a state dinner. For last week’s banquet in Windsor Castle, King Charles approved of a three-course meal, per NYT: “The menu began with a Hampshire watercress panna cotta, served with parmesan shortbread and quail egg salad. The main course was an organic Norfolk chicken ballotine wrapped in courgettes, with a thyme and savory-infused jus. For dessert, guests were to be served a vanilla ice cream bombe with Kentish raspberry sorbet interior and lightly poached Victoria plums.” Basically, cheese, salad, chicken and ice cream. Which is pretty smart for someone like Trump. Still, there was a major snafu behind-the-scenes, at least according to the Daily Mail:

The lavish Windsor Castle banquet held as the centrepiece of President Donald Trump’s state visit to Britain was hit by a furious behind-the-scenes row, The Daily Mail has learned. The spectacular dinner saw Trump and his wife Melania hosted by King Charles, Prince William and Princess Kate, surrounded by dozens of high-flying business chiefs and diplomats from both sides of the Atlantic. But as the 160 VIP guests enjoyed their three course meal in the refined surroundings of Windsor Castle’s St George’s Hall, tensions ‘below stairs’ were soon boiling over.

Sources have told the Daily Mail that several members of the Secret Service team guarding the President went into the kitchen to oversee the preparation by the royal chefs, and even tasting the food – which some of them felt was disruptive. The guests were blissfully unaware but the atmosphere in the kitchen quickly became tense as tempers began to fray between kitchen staff and visiting American security.

The royal source said: ‘The banquet was a resounding success in the main hall, but there was a disruption behind the scenes. Tensions flared between the chefs preparing the meal and the US security team responsible for protecting the President and his entourage. The chefs, working to plate three courses flawlessly, grew frustrated as US Secret Service agents repeatedly checking and even sampling all the food. What began as quiet irritation escalated into a heated exchange, with raised voices on both sides. It took several minutes for tempers to cool and for the kitchen to return to its usual rhythm. Guests in the hall remained completely unaware of the row, but in the kitchen, it was impossible to miss.’

[From The Daily Mail]

It pains me to say this, but… isn’t this business as usual for the Secret Service? While it sounds like they were going out of their way to make nuisances out of themselves, it also sounds like the palace kitchen team were (stupidly) unprepared for Secret Service to take those kinds of precautions when it came to handling the NotMyPresident’s food. Additionally, those British lushes made a big deal about the extensive wine list and another specialty cocktail made for the banquet. Did Charles not realize that Trump doesn’t drink alcohol? Granted, I’m sure everyone else enjoyed their wine and cocktails, but I’m also sure that Trump was dying for a Diet Coke.

bitchy | After Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension, people are unsubscribing from Disney & ESPN+

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel last Wednesday for saying this on-air: “The MAGA gang [are] desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” Reportedly, there have been conversations all up and down ABC leadership and Kimmel. Every report emphasizes that Disney CEO Bob Iger made the call to suspend Kimmel’s show indefinitely. While everyone is rightly concerned about the First Amendment issues, part of me wonders if, from a corporate perspective, Iger was simply trying to cool the temperature – sort of “let’s hit pause and see where we are in a week when everyone has cooled down.” Maybe I’m giving Iger too much credit though – reportedly, both sides (ABC and Kimmel) are talking and discussions are “ongoing” as of this writing. Well, Disney’s former CEO Michael Eisner has some thoughts about Iger’s (lack of) leadership in this moment:

Michael Eisner, the former Disney CEO who exited the company 20 years ago, criticized the senior leaders of his former employer — and, implicitly, current chief Bob Iger — over ABC’s suspending Jimmy Kimmel‘s late-night show “indefinitely.”

“Where has all the leadership gone?” Eisner wrote Friday in a post on X. “If not for university presidents, law firm managing partners, and corporate chief executives standing up against bullies, who then will step up for the first amendment? The ‘suspending indefinitely’ of Jimmy Kimmel immediately after the Chairman of the FCC’s aggressive yet hollow threatening of the Disney Company is yet another example of out-of-control intimidation. Maybe the Constitution should have said, ‘Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, except in one’s political or financial self-interest.’ By-the-way, for the record, this ex-CEO finds Jimmy Kimmel very talented and funny.”

[From Variety]

The kids won’t know this, but it’s actually a pretty big deal that Eisner spoke up. Eisner’s tenure at Disney was legendary, and his time as Disney CEO saw the company being built into a modern multiplatform cultural empire. Would Eisner have made different choices in Iger’s position? Possibly.

What else? There’s been a lot of reaction from celebrities, Democrats and Hollywood types. I wasn’t expecting this, but Ted Cruz spoke up in defense of Kimmel and the First Amendment. Cruz said that FCC commissioner’s threats to ABC were “dangerous as hell” and “right out of Goodfellas.” Several major Disney-associated directors and stars have spoken up as well:

Within 48 hours of its decision to pull late-night host Jimmy Kimmel off the air indefinitely, the parent company of ABC has once again found itself at the center of a bitter political battle. The company now faces protests outside its studios, celebrities threatening to break ties and political pressure from Republicans and Democrats.

The blowback has been swift. Damon Lindelof, creator of ABC’s “Lost,” said in an Instagram post on Thursday that he would not work with the company if Kimmel’s suspension was not lifted. The Emmy-winning showrunner has a long-standing relationship with the studio, having worked with them on “Lost” for six seasons from 2004 to 2010.

Tatiana Maslany, who starred in Marvel’s “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” which aired its first and only season on Disney+ in 2022, posted a call to her followers on Instagram to “cancel your @disneyplus @hulu @espn subscriptions!”

[From NBC News]

There was a seemingly organic response to Kimmel’s suspension: people really did cancel their Disney/Hulu subscription. At a steady clip too – I’ve seen some evidence on social media that the mass subscription cancellations are scaring the sh-t out of Disney. Remember that Disney also owns ESPN and ESPN+ too – I’m reminding myself to cancel my subscription (which I only use for tennis). Sinclair owns Tennis Channel, so if you have Tennis Channel Plus, cancel or unsubscribe.

bitchy | A.N. Wilson: Prince William is ‘incensed by any notion of a comeback for Harry’

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

In recent months, Prince William has been getting some of the worst press he’s gotten in YEARS. You’d have to go back to the pre-Sussex days to find a time when William was being battered this heavily by his domestic media. It’s well-deserved though, and long overdue. I honestly believe that the energy around William (not to mention William himself) would not have gotten this bad if he had been facing the consequences of his own terrible decisions for years. Instead of saying “actually, William is horrible for what he did to Harry and Meghan,” the press has busied itself with covering for him and excusing him. Instead of saying “actually, William’s schedule belies his laziness,” they’ve gone overboard to praise him for “prioritizing the school run.” Instead of saying “actually, he’s a diplomatic lightweight and it’s a huge problem,” they’ve embiggened him and his pitiful international efforts, giving him every gold star they can for all of his big-boy statesmanship like “shaking hands with the UN Gen-Sec at a cattle-call photo-op.” Well, the Mail’s A.N. Wilson is on the case. This column is AMAZING. Some highlights:

William’s demeanor at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral: There was no mistaking the fact that William appeared angry and unhappy at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral at Westminster Cathedral this week. He looked to have lost weight, too. He gave the impression of bearing the burden of the world on his shoulders.

The main reason for William’s apparent discomfiture: Prince Harry. William’s younger brother is evidently trying to make a comeback. A few days before Trump’s visit, Harry embarked on his four-day, pseudo-royal tour of Britain. He also had tea with their father, and it seemed as if the slow process of a reconciliation had begun. Reconciliation, that is, between the King and his wayward prodigal son – not reconciliation between Harry and William. Of the two sons, Harry was always the boy favoured by Charles – which is one of the factors that has made Harry’s breach with the Royal Family so especially painful for the King. William is incensed by any notion of a comeback for Harry. The sense of betrayal he feels cannot be overestimated. Harry abandoned him and Kate, as well as the Firm.

They’re still trying to blame Harry for Charles & Kate’s cancer: Some have suggested that the stress caused by the savagery of Harry’s treatment of his own family might have contributed to either the King’s or Catherine’s cancer. Whether true or not, imagine that thought playing on William’s mind.

William is furious that Harry is still popular: How galling it would have been for the heir to the throne to see commentators in the Press suggest Harry’s four-day trip to Britain was a roaring success, a reminder of the cheeky chappy royal we have missed, and that his attempts at reconciliation should be welcomed.

Tina Brown’s claim that Charles is pissed at his lazy heir: In the past seven months, the Waleses have had five confirmed family vacations, a fact seized on gleefully by Ms Brown, a former editor of Vanity Fair and the New Yorker, to suggest William was workshy. It would, of course, be a cruel person who did not feel that the Prince of Wales deserved considerable sympathy. His wife has cancer, and both she and William have suffered all the strains this imposes, both on their own relationship, and on that with their three young children. What is more, those who sing the National Anthem, hoping that Charles will be ‘long to reign over us’, do so in the sadly realistic knowledge that the present reign might, in fact not be as long as we would wish. William therefore faces the prospect of becoming King when he is still a relatively young man. Four decades and more of public duty stretch ahead. Why would he not prioritise family life in such circumstances and spend precious time with George, Charlotte and Louis?

William’s lack of deference: It is becoming apparent that William likes to do things his way or, as a senior member of the royal household who has observed the father-son dynamic put it: ‘As direct heir, he sometimes seems to forget, whether by accident or design, that there is a hierarchy and that he ranks one below his father.’ Another source claimed that ‘deference does not appear to be in his vocabulary when it comes to the King’.

Casual Peg: When Queen Elizabeth II died, there was an outpouring of grief which did, quite genuinely, unite the nation. But united us in the recognition that we revered her – her dutiful acceptance of the burden and responsibility of her office without question. William appears to want things to be more casual. He told one interviewer that he would never be royal with a capital R. Yet if you are Prince of Wales, royal with a capital R is what you are.

William’s atheism: Queen Elizabeth was a woman of faith. Her Christianity defined her entire attitude to life. Charles, bafflingly, has said he wants to be the Defender of Faiths. None of us can guess what this is supposed to mean – and when we watch him entertaining fire worshippers and witch doctors in the gardens of Highgrove we would probably rather not ask too deeply. But William has made it clear that he is not a believer. Nothing wrong with this if we are talking of him as a private individual. But, again – as with the military – it is part of the job specification that the monarch is Supreme Governor of the Church. The heavy concerns of history are bearing down on William. Can he adjust the monarchy as he wants to? Can he do so while retaining public affection for the institution?

The Duchy money: Above all, to my mind, does he feel queasy about the £23 million per annum, he derives from the Duchy of Cornwall? Because by hanging on to the loot, he could jeopardise the monarchy. When the public is in love with the Royal Family, it is prepared to overlook their besetting sin, which is conspicuous consumption and lavish living. Does the King really need so many houses – the Castle of Mey, Birkhall, Sandringham and Highgrove? His properties in Romania are all privately owned, in addition to the palaces and castles which go with the job. If the public is in a mood to question the royals and their behaviour – as will happen once more when yet more revelations come out about Prince Andrew and the convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein – then they will rightly ask what on earth makes them think they are entitled to this vast amount of wealth. Particularly if it is in return for just 107 engagements per year performed by a man who does not seem to relish the role.

Oooof: Public sympathy for Kate and for the King – both of them visibly still far from well and deeply affected by Harry’s egregious behaviour – is palpable. But sympathy for them in person is not the same as being sympathetic to the idea of what they stand for…. The King in waiting needs to make a case for it if he is not to find himself booted out by a hostile public. Princess Diana once told me that during the English Civil War in the 1640s, her ancestor Earl Spencer had fought against the King on the side of Oliver Cromwell. This was historically untrue – in fact that Earl Spencer died fighting in the royal cause. But, she went on to say to me, she did not think there would be a monarchy after Charles had died. William will need to work hard and employ his mother’s radiant and irresistible charm if her prophecy is not to be fulfilled. Little wonder he seems so subdued.

[From The Daily Mail]

Wilson also claims that William “is already being eased into his future royal role. The King delegates more to him than many realise,” and then Wilson cites this as an example: William “now oversees the shoots at Balmoral and Sandringham – a key job among family roles.” LMAO. You guys, William’s not lazy, he goes to meetings and organizes the shoots on the private estates!! The thing is, I do not believe William even does THAT. Overall, this piece is steeped in the palace talking points, but it’s actually a huge warning. William isn’t a man of faith, William is lazy, William lacks charisma, and if he’s not careful, this whole thing will fall apart very quickly. And yeah, ALL of this is about Harry, I have no doubt. It was always about Harry.

bitchy | King Charles is ‘thrilled’ about the Trump visit & ‘very pleased with the global optics’

It’s interesting reading the differences between the British coverage and American coverage of the Trumps’ state visit to the UK. The British political media is mostly happy that it’s over and they seem unsettled by how the Windsors ingratiated themselves so thoroughly with the Trumps. The American coverage is more like “well, Trump wants nothing more than to be a despotic king, so he was really impressed with the dumbass carriage ride, I guess.” Everyone’s pointing out that the Trumps were localized, almost entirely, inside and around Windsor Castle. They really didn’t want the Trumps to interact with any of the locals. Meanwhile, the royalists are trying to make it sound like a good thing that Trump is such a huge fan of Prince William, Kate and King Charles. “Nazi-approved” is such a weird flex for British royalty, you know? From Vanity Fair:

The inclusion of Prince William and Princess Kate at such a high level during Trump’s state visit has been “unusual,” according to royal watchers, with both the Prince and Princess of Wales taking on more high-profile roles. As well as greeting President Trump and the first lady at Windsor, which is standard for state visits, William and Catherine were invited to have a private meeting with the Trumps which a Kensington Palace aide described as “warm and friendly.”

“It seems as though Trump has an eye on the future generation,” says Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty magazine. “He’s obviously genuinely impressed by William and who wouldn’t be impressed by Kate. She looked incredible. It seems a lot of effort has been made for the Trumps and the Waleses to spend some time together on this trip.”

“I would expect that William and Catherine would have been quite touched and maybe a bit taken aback by so many compliments,” adds Seward. “It’s very flattering to have someone as powerful as Trump praising you and treating you like a very special friend. It’s unusual for the Head of State to be that personal, but it’s Trump’s style. The royals have to deal with so many dullards, Trump is actually really refreshing. He’s outspoken and quite exciting to be around because you don’t know what’s going to happen. Catherine looked quite taken aback when he praised her so personally. She looked a bit embarrassed, but that’s Trump. I think the royals are probably amused and bemused by it all.”

During Wednesday’s dinner in Windsor, Trump made a point about being the only US president in history to be granted the privilege of two state visits and joked about hoping he would be the only one to make King Charles laugh.

A source close to the king told Vanity Fair that Charles has said the state visit “could not be better.” Adds the source, “I understand that His Majesty the King is thrilled about the visit and very pleased with the global optics of it all. The Royal Family really did pull out all the stops.”

[From Vanity Fair]

“The Royal Family really did pull out all the stops” – again, they didn’t have much of a choice. Charles HAD to do all of this, he was outmaneuvered by Keir Starmer and Trump himself. Charles had to roll out the red carpet and entertain a decrepit old white supremacist with shiny objects. The only real choices made for this state visit were about Prince William and Kate. Kate especially didn’t have to be featured so prominently, she didn’t have to agree to sit next to Trump at the banquet (that should have been a job for Camilla), she didn’t have to agree to a solo event with Melania. Choices were also made to push William and Kate aside, especially at the welcoming ceremony, when the Waleses were literally shooed away and kicked off the dais. So… yeah, some interesting things of note happened for hardcore royal-watchers, but the broad strokes of the state visit are that it was “successful” on both sides of the Atlantic.
