Sydney Sweeney is stepping into the boxing ring—or more accurately, punching it—for what might be her most physically and emotionally demanding role yet. In Christy, the new biopic premiering at TIFF, the Emmy-nominated actress portrays legendary boxer Christy Martin. Sweeney, 27, committed fully to the role, even literally delivering real punches alongside her co-stars. “Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force,” she told Vanity Fair—and yes, she emerged with bruises and concussions to prove it.

She’s also making her case beyond the ring: “I was blown away that her story wasn’t more known on a universal, global level,” Sweeney said of Martin, calling her “one of the most harrowing and inspiring women that I’ve ever met in my entire life.” That emotional weight is underscored by Sweeney’s physical transformation—training for months, gaining more than 30 pounds, and stepping fully into Martin’s shoes.

With production wrapped and excitement growing over Sweeney’s transformative performance, many fans are eager to know more about the film, the true story behind it, and when it will hit theaters. Find out more about the Christy Martin boxing biopic below.

Who Is Christy Martin?

Martin is a groundbreaking American professional boxer who rose to fame in the 1990s, earning the nickname “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.” She’s widely credited with bringing women’s boxing into the mainstream, becoming the first woman signed by promoter Don King and fighting on high-profile cards. Martin won the WBC women’s super welterweight title and retired with a record of 49 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws.

Beyond her victories, Martin’s story resonated with fans for her courage outside the ring as well. In 2010, she survived a near-fatal attack by her then-husband and manager, James Martin. She later testified against him in court, and today she uses her platform to advocate against domestic violence while continuing to mentor young fighters.

What Is ‘Christy’ Starring Sydney Sweeney About?

The film—directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes—chronicles Martin’s rise in the 1990s, her role in breaking barriers for women’s boxing, and the deeply personal struggles she endured behind the scenes. It doesn’t shy away from her survival story after the 2010 domestic violence attack that nearly cost her life, making the biopic both a sports drama and an intimate portrait of resilience.

Michôd described the project as “a wild mix of inspiring underdog sports-world story and personal saga,” praising Sweeney’s dedication: “Sydney trained her butt off to play the part. The beauty of Sydney is that she turned up to work every day with her tail wagging, ready to go. No matter how tough it was, she was like a ray of sunshine.”

Sweeney transformed physically and emotionally for the role, gaining over 30 pounds and committing to a grueling daily training regimen. “I loved it,” she told W Magazine. “I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”

Is the Christy Martin Biopic Based on a True Story?

Yes. The film is a true-to-life portrayal of Martin’s journey, from her barrier-breaking success in professional boxing to her survival and recovery after enduring a brutal domestic violence incident.

When Does ‘Christy’ Come Out?

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025, where Sweeney’s performance drew immediate attention. According to Deadline, a wider theatrical release is slated for later in 2025, though exact distribution details are still to be announced. Filming wrapped in late 2024.

Julia Garner Confirms Madonna Biopic Is Still On: ‘Work in Progress’

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Yes, Julia Garner is still on to play Madonna in an upcoming biopic on the superstar, the existence of which has long been called into question due to a series of delays.

The Weapons actress confirmed as much in an on-camera interview with W Magazine posted Wednesday (Sept. 3). When asked whether she’d for sure be starring as the Queen of Pop, Garner replied enthusiastically, “Yeah!”

“I can’t say too much about it, but yes,” she continued. “It’s a work in progress.”

Garner also shared some of her favorite Madonna songs. “Oh my god, I have so many,” she said, rattling off a list. “I love ‘Borderline,’ that’s probably my favorite … I love all of Madonna basically is what I’m trying to say. ”

She added, “I just love Madonna’s voice on ‘Papa Don’t Preach.’ There’s a lot of emotions in that song.”

The interview comes more than three years after Garner was first reportedly cast to play Madge in the biopic in mid-2022. By January 2023, reports emerged that the project had been scrapped, but the following year, Madonna teased on social media that it was back on.

Shortly before confirming as much to W, Garner said on a July episode of Will Arnett and Jason Bateman’s Smartless podcast that the film was indeed “still brewing” and “supposed to still happen.”

“I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it,” she added at the time of the audition process. “Because I wasn’t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!”

‘Salaam Bombay’ Writer Sooni Taraporevala to Pen Vicky Roy Biopic

by jummy84 August 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Award-winning Indian screenwriter Sooni Taraporevala has been tapped to write “Street Dreams,” a biopic based on the remarkable true story of Vicky Roy, a former street child who rose to international acclaim as a photographer.

Taraporevala, whose credits include Mira Nair‘s “Salaam Bombay,” Venice best screenplay winner “Mississippi Masala,” “The Namesake,” Netflix’s “Yeh Ballet” and Prime Video’s “Waack Girls,” will pen the script for Nirvana Films founder Mauktik Kulkarni, who is producing the project. Indian-American filmmaker Ben Rekhi (“The Reunited States”) is attached as consulting producer.

Roy’s story begins in poverty-stricken rural East India, where desperation drove him to theft and ultimately to flee his home village. He found himself among Delhi’s street children, surviving by collecting rags on train platforms before the Salaam Baalak Trust — a rehabilitation organization established following the success of the Oscar-nominated “Salaam Bombay” — stepped in to change his trajectory. The intervention launched an ascent that would see Roy photograph the 9/11 Memorial construction and secure an MIT Media Labs fellowship. He currently oversees photojournalism initiatives for India’s nationwide Everyone Is Good at Something program, dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities.

“This is truly a full-circle moment for me. ‘Salaam Bombay’ was made in 1987, the year Vicky Roy was born. I was the writer and still photographer on the film, which launched my careers in both fields. I had no idea then that the film would be so successful and would birth Salaam Baalak Trust that would help so many street children like Vicky find purpose and meaning in life,” Taraporevala said. “As a photographer myself I have followed Vicky’s incredible journey and seen his work since 2009. Now, after the film I initially wrote might have changed his life, to have the opportunity to write a film about his life is quite surreal and wonderful.”

Producer Kulkarni, who transitioned from neuroscience to filmmaking, brings experience from his previous work on travel documentary “Riding on a Sunbeam” and maintains an active Los Angeles-based development slate.

“India is known as a land of myths and fantasies. When I first heard about Vicky’s unbelievable story, I was inclined to believe that it was a bit of both. It has been inspiring to get to know him since then and I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring his story to the screen. Given Sooni’s mastery at crafting India-centric narratives for global audiences and her brilliant work as a photographer, she is the ideal writer to bring this script to life,” Kulkarni said.

The Salaam Baalak Trust’s founder Sanjoy Roy is supporting the film’s development, viewing it as an extension of the organization’s three-decade mission to secure basic rights for India’s street children. The timing follows another success story from the Trust’s network — last year’s Oscar-nominated short “Anuja” featured one of their alumni in a starring role.

“We began in 1988 with the singular mission of ensuring street children in India have access to their basic rights. With the help of our patrons, we are glad that we have gone beyond that mission and spawned thousands of success stories. And Vicky is no exception to it,” Sanjoy Roy said. “Coming on the heels of last year’s Oscar-nominated short film ‘Anuja,’ in which another stellar fellow of our Trust played a leading role, I am hoping ‘Street Dreams’ inspires audiences to believe that it is not where you come from, but rather what you do with your life that matters.”
