Rina Sawayama sends “big love” to Sabrina Carpenter but calls out “cultural insensitivity” of ‘SNL’ performance

Rina Sawayama has shared her thoughts on Sabrina Carpenter’s Saturday Night Live performance, praising the star but commenting on the performance’s martial arts theme.

  • READ MORE: Sabrina Carpenter – ‘Man’s Best Friend’ review: pop’s bawdy troubadour hits the melodic G-spot

Carpenter performed the song ‘Nobody’s Son’ from her latest album ‘Man’s Best Friend’ on SNL on October 18. The performance had a martial arts theme, with Carpenter herself wearing a short white robe and black belt and dancers acting out a fight sequence.

The singer was making her hosting debut on the long-running show, serving as her own musical guest, and also performed her single ‘Manchild’, made reference to the controversy over the ‘Man’s Best Friend’ album cover, and poked fun at her friend Taylor Swift’s song ‘The Fate Of Ophelia’.

The following day, Sawayama posted a clip of the performance on her Instagram Stories, and wrote, “Big love to Sabrina but fellow artists creative teams … if we are clearly referencing a culture, please can you do so with the research, respect and care it deserves. Shoes on tatami is jail.”

Tatami are soft mats used in traditional Japanese rooms, and etiquette dictates that people shouldn’t wear shoes on them.

Sawayama was born in the Japanese city of Niigata and moved to London with her family when she was five years old. While adjusting to life in the UK, she tried to “preserve” her Japanese culture, in part by listening to Japanese artists, and in 2019 Vogue Japan named her one of its women of the year.

At Glastonbury Festival two years ago, she spoke out against The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, previously a director at her record label Dirty Hit, following a controversial podcast appearance on which he mocked the appearance of rapper Ice Spice and said that he watched a racially charged pornography series.

Introducing her song ‘STFU!’, she said: “I wrote this next song because I was sick and tired of microaggressions. So, tonight, this song goes out to a white man who watches [pornography series] Ghetto Gaggers and mocks Asian people on a podcast. He also owns my masters. I’ve had enough.”

She then seemed to call Healy out again during her set at NOS Alive in Portugal a couple of weeks later.

Not long after, former collaborator Charli XCX unfollowed Sawayama, with fans speculating that it was related because Charli was dating, and is now married to, Healy’s bandmate George Daniel.

Charli then addressed the drama on X (Twitter), writing: “Look – this all got a bit crazy – me and Rina spoke about things on the phone just now. My unfollowing (which happened a couple of weeks ago) was over a personal disagreement between friends which we’ve now spoken about.”

In 2024, Sawayama – who released her most recent album ‘Hold The Girl’ in 2022 – said that she couldn’t release her next album “under my current conditions”, admitting: “I feel really trapped and don’t know what to do.”

She told The Independent that, since the previous summer, she had “felt intense racist misogyny in a way that I’ve never felt before,” adding: “In public and private I feel as though I’ve been repeatedly gaslit, disrespected, ignored, even cyber-bullied for calling out blatant racist and sexist behaviour.”

Funny Marco Talks ‘Open Thoughts’ Season 2 And Landing Big Interviews

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Funny Marco is back, and season two of his interview series Open Thoughts promises more surprises, more laughs, and even deeper insight into some of our favorite celebrities.

Ahead of the season’s premiere, VIBE spoke with Marco to get the scoop on what’s to come, and pleasantly, the conversation revealed a man who’s even more interesting behind the camera than he appears in front of it.

“This season is different because I have a team behind me,” Marco said. “It’s more about getting different people’s ideas and thoughts that help push the content. I’m looking forward to seeing the impact of doing something independently versus going mainstream.” That blend of hustle and mainstream reach has always set Open Thoughts apart from its competitors, as Marco has created a whimsical space where guests can be caught off-guard, while still feeling comfortable enough to open up.

As traditional journalism increasingly adapts to social media and personality-driven content, Marco, né Marco Summers, discussed the trend of celebrities gravitating toward streamers and online personalities rather than traditional journalists.

He explained how that comfort often comes from a host’s reputation. “As long as you got a resume showing how you treat people, people will love to sit down with you no matter who you are. It’s no different from Oprah when she had her talk show,” he declared.

For the 32-year-old, his series’ next season marks a moment of self-reflection. Recalling his 2023 interview with Southside and G Herbo, Marco opened up about the viral sit-down and the aftermath of the awkward exchange. Determined to grow from the moment that saw Herb and Southside trolling him on his own show, Marco said he’s learned his lesson: if something like that happens again, “I will be able to speak up for myself.”

There seems to be an undeniable “secret sauce” behind Marco’s access to big names like Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj — two subjects that many journalists have not had a chance to interview. He’s attributed his power to persistence and creating a unique lane. “I just kept DMing them and trying. You have to know who to pick and who you feel comfortable sitting down with,” he said.

Marco also shared insights on his Nicki Minaj interview, which saw Minaj jokingly becoming annoyed with his uncanny style of questioning. “Nicki is a powerful woman… if you don’t want to understand her, just stay out of her way,” he said, framing her as a trailblazer whose influence extends beyond rap.

Although known for her satirical humor online, Marco was rather serious, soft spoken and a deep thinker during our conversation. He touched on the balance between his on-camera persona and his real-life self. “Everybody’s a character… you just know when to pull them out,” he explained. Whether cracking jokes or having a serious conversation, Marco said he’s learned how to “read the room and adjust.”

Open Thoughts returns in partnership with Wave, the creative force behind some of today’s most viral digital series, like 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony. “Funny Marco has built a reputation for creating viral, must-watch moments that cut across culture,” said Tunde St. Matthew-Daniel, EVP of Original Content at Wave. “Bringing Open Thoughts into the Wave Originals network is a key step in expanding our creator slate as we continue to push into new genres.”

He added, “This season will build on everything fans already love about Marco: his off-the-cuff interviews, bold humor, and hilariously awkward conversations with A-list names in music, sports, and culture.” Marco echoed those sentiments, adding, “I’m excited to partner with Wave to take my show to the next level.”

Funny Marco

Kayla James

Looking ahead, he teased what fans can expect this season, which will be more of him trying to “shock his guests” with his questions and not just conduct prank interviews. He wants to “get to know them more.” And whether he ever gets his dream guests such as 50 Cent and Eminem together, or Barack and Michelle Obama — Marco says he’ll approach each conversation with gratitude and curiosity.

Beyond his viral show, the father-of-three hinted at other ventures such as his TV show in the works, plus coming up with more creative concepts online. “I’m working on just creating new content of people seeing me in the spotlight of acting,” he shared. “There’s some scenes that I want to redo and recreate. I always wanted to be Coach Carter, so I’m going to try giving that a shot.”

The all-new season of Open Thoughts premieres Tuesday (Oct. 21) on YouTube and Spotify, rolling out weekly with a star-studded lineup of returning and first-time guests, including LaLa Anthony, Coi Leray, Miguel, and a highly-anticipated reunion with Bobbi Althoff.

Ian Thornley on Big Wreck’s new album and 30 years in the music business - National

Ian Thornley on Big Wreck’s new album and 30 years in the music business – National

by jummy84 October 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Ian Thornley has been leading Big Wreck on and off (mostly on) for more than 30 years now. Founded in Boston by some Berklee College of Music students in 1992, Thornley brought the band back to Toronto and had an excellent run that stretched from 1997 to 2o03. Then came a breakup, a solo career with three more albums, and finally a reunion in 2010, which resulted in five more albums. A sixth, The Rest of the Story, is coming to stores on Oct. 24.

I had a chance to speak with Thornley from his home studio.

Alan Cross: You’re now more than 30 years into a full-time music career. Did you ever imagine this would be the case?

Ian Thornley: Well, I didn’t imagine it wouldn’t be the case, but I never thought that far ahead, to be honest with you. I never thought I’d still be grinding 30 years in. I didn’t think it would still be fistfights in the mud to scratch out a living. If I had thought of it back then, I would have thought I’d be moving on to producing other people and doing other projects — music for film, or something like that.

Going on the road now is a little more difficult each year, and staying out for extended periods of time. We have a little guy at home now, and my daughter has grown. It gets harder being away from home, and sleeping on a bus is difficult. But I still adore music. I’m still obsessed with it. And I’m trying to get better at it. Any way I can keep practising music and keep doing it for a living, I’m gonna do it.

AC: The first Big Wreck album (In Loving Memory Of…) came out in 1997, right at the tail-end of the golden age of the compact disc. Everything about the business has changed since then. Loaded question: How have you adjusted?

IT: It’s not like we were really successful and really loaded and had a bunch of money and then someone suddenly turned the tap off. Our main source of income has always been the road, playing as many shows as we can. We sold a bunch of that first record just before people stopped buying records. I’ve since adjusted my expectations. I think a lot of musicians my age who lived through that, there’s a shot you gotta take. It’s a big piece of humble pie when all the bands that were just before us that really hit — they’re still out there playing shows, whereas we… Well, the last couple of years, we’ve been slowly growing back up again.

Having said that, there was something kind of freeing about it because I didn’t have to serve a master. I didn’t have to keep rewriting (Big Wreck hits like) That Song or The Oaf. I don’t have to bow to any previous expectations about what Big Wreck means.

Story continues below advertisement

AC: How has your approach and sound changed over all those albums?

IT: I think it’s become more refined. The process is still the same. There are little shortcuts that we can employ now, like my phone. I can hum something into my phone when something just falls in my lap, and I’m, “OK, that’s something.” Sometimes I’ll sit here on the computer and start mapping a song out, or sometimes I’ll just record something on my phone and leave little breadcrumbs to visit later. But it’s still waiting for a drop of inspiration. And then you craft it.

As craftsmen, I think we’ve gotten better. I think I’ve gotten better. And I’m better at recognizing a good idea from a not-so-great one. Back in the old days, a lot of the ideas I’d stumble on would turn into something different in the garage the next day when we started beating it around. Sometimes, though, the inspiration can get blurry, lost, when you start pushing it in whatever direction. And then you end up laying it down and you say, “No, I don’t think this is gonna work.”

AC: How much time do you spend chasing that guitar tone you hear in your head?

IT: It’s part and parcel with the chase for the perfect chorus or the perfect verse, a grouping of words, a grouping of notes. The things that make your hairs stand up and give you chills. Today, I think it’s all about the silly rhyme and “Ooo, that was a good hook.” It’s not about all the things that keep me up at night, which are things like the guitar tone. I think it’s all important. Half the juice going into the studio and recording is that, because that can often inspire a different part, or how a phrase gets laid down. Most musicians are reactive and you react to what you’re hearing.

There’s no app.

AC: This album, The Rest of the Story, was recorded at Noble Studios in Toronto, which is a really good studio.

IT: We got lucky. We were going to release three EPs but then decided to do one EP and a full album. We booked the studio for two weeks to get basic tracks for 17 or 18 songs. But Dave (McMilliam, bass) and Sekou (Lumumba, drums) go through their tracks in about five days. Nick (Raskulinecz, producer) said, “You’re going to need to get a truck to get your guitars and amps down here because we’re going to get to use all these goodies.” We ended up cutting a lot of guitars there.

AC: Why is the album called The Rest of the Story?

IT: I just figured it was a good tie-in to Pages, the EP that preceded this. We were going to have Pages 1, Pages 2 and Pages 3, but it became an entity unto itself.

AC: Any surprises?

IT: The surprises are something that happens every single day while you’re in the studio. That’s why I’m the first one in and the last one to leave. And the good stuff starts to happen when someone says, “What if…?”

AC: What’s next?

IT: We gave a few shows on the books for the rest of the year and we’re heading out the first quarter of next year. We’re going out with Live Across Canada, which should be fun. I don’t think we’ve played with them before. And we have some other ideas that we’re discussing as well.

The Rest of the Story is out Oct. 24. This interview was condensed and lightly edited for clarity.

Who left Big Brother 2025? All evicted housemates

by jummy84 October 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Big Brother is in full swing, and there’s been plenty of drama so far.

During Friday’s (17th October) episode of the hit ITV series, it was time for the usual live eviction, with housemates Sam and Nancy chosen to face the public vote after their conversation about Jenny was revealed to the house.

But in a huge twist, no one was actually sent home.

While everyone thought that Sam had been sent home, he was actually sent to a secret room alongside two former housemates.

Sam was shocked to see Farida, 2023’s first evictee, as well as Emily, who was eliminated on the first night of the current series.

Earlier in October, contestant George Gilbert was removed from the Big Brother house earlier due to “repeated use of unacceptable language and behaviour.”

But which housemates have been evicted so far? Read on to find out who has left the Big Brother 2025 house.

Who left Big Brother 2025?

Cameron B – Episode 12

Cameron. Initial

The second live eviction of the season saw Cameron B leave the Big Brother house. He faced the vote alongside housemates Elsa and Richard, while George was originally set to be part of that line-up before being removed from the house ahead of the live show.

Receiving the fewest votes from the public, Cameron B became the first evictee to depart through the front door. On being evicted, he said: “I’m feeling good. It’s good to be out. If you stay in, you’re with everyone again, like your adoptive family. If not, you’re seeing everyone, seeing different faces.”

George – removed ahead of episode 10

On Wednesday 8th October, ITV confirmed that George Gilbert had been removed from the Big Brother house.

A spokesperson for Big Brother said in a statement: “Following repeated use of unacceptable language and behaviour, George has been removed from the Big Brother house with immediate effect and will no longer participate in the programme.”

Prior to his removal, George had been issued a formal warning after making comments about fellow housemate Sam Ashby. It is understood he had also received several additional warnings for unacceptable language. His comments were not aired as they were deemed contrary to broadcast standards, ITV added.

While George was one of the housemates due to face eviction, his removal from the house came before the live eviction could take place.

Gani – Episode 6

Gani wearing a black shirt and trousers, smiling ahead.

Gani. Initial

Gani became the second housemate to be evicted from the Big Brother house after receiving the fewest votes from the public.

While only being in the house a matter of days, Gani shocked viewers when he revealed he married his cousin in an arranged marriage.

“I was so open-minded, even though I was from a religious background. I was always like, ‘Why not try everything?’, he told fellow housemate Jenny.

“From 2022 to 2024, I was literally enjoying and exploring bisexuality. And then at the end of 2023, December 2023, my dad all of a sudden was like, ‘Gani, how long are you not gonna be married. Come on, please marry, why are you doing this?’

“And I was like, ‘No, I don’t want to get married, blah, blah, blah.’ Then my dad asked me [to get married] and I couldn’t say no.

“That is how I got married in January 2024 with my cousin.”

Emily – Episode 2

Emily wearing a black dress and boots, smiling ahead.

Emily. Initial

In a new twist, Big Brother revealed on launch night that one housemate would be sent packing in a backdoor eviction.

Emily, along with housemates Sam and Caroline, had to decide among themselves who should leave the Big Brother house, after a public vote during the launch put them at risk of eviction.

With both Sam and Caroline voting for Emily, she was sent home, despite protesting to stay.

Emily is a 25-year-old political events manager from Northampton, who applied for the show because she loves “doing things for the plot.”

Big Brother continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Slams Prop 50 As “A Big Scam”

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

As California voters weigh Prop 50 ahead of the crucial upcoming midterm elections, Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher to campaign against the bill.

Following Gov. Gavin Newsom‘s ‘Election Rigging Response Act‘, sparked by recent Texas redistricting efforts the benefit Republicans, Schwarzenegger told Maher he thinks “that Prop 50 is a big scam,” noting that “there’s gerrymandering going on all over.”

“Do you know who I want to win? The people,” he said. “The people have to win. See, I’m a Republican, but I’m not a Republican hack. I’m not a political hack. I don’t serve the party, I always serve the people. The people are first.”

Governor Gavin Newsom speaks on August 14, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

Schwarzenegger continued. “We cannot undo something and rip away the power that the people in California have and give it back to the politicians. We fought that for too long. Let’s not do that. Let’s be a good example. Let the Democrats outperform the Republicans, and therefore, because of their performance, win and get the House back.”

Maher quipped, “I don’t think that’s very realistic.”

The former governor went on to champion the independent California Citizens Redistricting Commission that was formed in 2010 with support from Schwarzenegger.

Newsom previously trolled the Twins (1988) actor on social media in August when his co-star Danny DeVito contributed a $1,000 donation to the Yes on 50 campaign.

Lime Venue Portfolio Launches the Big Event Food Survey 2025

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Lime Venue Portfolio has today launched the Big Event Food Survey 2025, a research project designed to explore how food continues to influence, and elevate, the event experience. The survey will represent another year of data on food and events, and will track changing attitudes and tastes within events and amongst delegates.

Food remains a defining part of events, and the survey returns in 2025 to look at how industry habits are changing. It examines the choices behind event menus, the growing focus on sustainability and inclusion, and how food can make experiences more memorable and meaningful for delegates.

The results are always fascinating, often revealing just how central food is to the delegate experience. Previous research showed that around 45% of all event feedback relates to food, a rise from previous years. The findings from this year’s study will once again be made freely available to the industry, providing valuable insight into how organisers, venues, and caterers can continue to raise standards across the sector.

“Food has a huge influence on the success of events, it brings people together, reflects brand values, and creates memories long after the day itself,” commented Jenner Carter, Head of Marketing, Lime Venue Portfolio. “This survey gives everyone in our industry a chance to shape the future of event food. The more people take part, the richer the data becomes, and the more we can develop the best experience for our guests.”

Open to organisers, venues, caterers and suppliers, the survey looks at feedback patterns, budgeting priorities, plant-based trends, food waste and sustainability. It also delves into changing attitudes toward inclusion and dietary choice, providing a detailed picture of where the sector stands and where it’s heading.

To take part, visit: Lime Venue Portfolio Big Event Food Survey 2025. As a thank you for taking part, respondents who share their details will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Love2Shop voucher.

The Kerala Story Director Slams Filmfare Awards, Calls It A ‘Tamasha’ After Laapataa Ladies’ Big Win

The Kerala Story Director Slams Filmfare Awards, Calls It A ‘Tamasha’ After Laapataa Ladies’ Big Win

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

The recently concluded Filmfare Awards 2024 in Ahmedabad celebrated what many called a landmark year for Hindi cinema, with Laapataa Ladies emerging as the night’s biggest winner. The film bagged 13 trophies, including Best Film, while Abhishek Bachchan and Kartik Aaryan jointly won Best Actor, and Alia Bhatt took home Best Actress. However, not everyone was impressed. Director Sudipto Sen, best known for The Kerala Story, has lashed out at the awards, calling them a “tamasha” and accusing the organisers of promoting hypocrisy in the name of art.

Taking to Instagram, Sen shared a strongly worded note criticising the Filmfare Awards and the films that dominated this year’s ceremony. “This year Filmfare truly is an expose of Indian ‘nouvelle vague’… A blatantly plagiarised film… a film which is a tutorial of brutality and a film which did not survive the box office for more than 72 hours took away most of the crowns,” he wrote. “As expected, the best work of 2024 remains elusive. Realised why Filmfare was so vocal against The Kerala Story receiving National Awards. I am happy that this ‘wood’ community does not recognise, invite or choose us.”

Sen didn’t hold back as he criticised the glamour and perceived insincerity of Bollywood’s award culture. “We are spared from faking smiles, faking camaraderie, and most importantly, not indulging in any sycophancy,” he continued. “In the end, I am happy that we are saved from hobnobbing with this tamasha in the name of cinema in Mumbai and clicking selfies in Cannes. At least we are spared from these ugly hypocrisies and fake tapestry in the name of cinema.”

In his caption, the filmmaker elaborated further on his disillusionment with the Indian film establishment: “I never expect anything great from any Indian cinema establishment, particularly when it is media or cinema journalism. Mostly enamored by the glamour and rich world of the stars, exactly the way people from villages and small cities gather in front of Mr. Bachchan or SRK’s house. They actually have zero contribution towards cinema, cinema art, the way world media does for world cinemas.”

While Sen refrained from explicitly naming the films he criticised, many inferred his targets from the context. The “blatantly plagiarised film” appeared to be a dig at Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao. The “tutorial of brutality” was widely understood as Kill, a high-octane action film backed by Karan Johar, and the one that “did not survive the box office for more than 72 hours” likely referred to I Want To Talk.

Sen’s post quickly caught attention online, reigniting debate around credibility, favoritism, and artistic merit in Bollywood award functions. Some agreed with his sentiments, praising him for calling out what they saw as a long-standing culture of superficial celebration. Others accused him of bitterness, pointing out that The Kerala Story had already received national recognition and that dismissing other films’ artistic merit was unfair.

This isn’t the first time Sudipto Sen has stirred controversy. Just last month, he won the National Award for Best Director for The Kerala Story, which also earned the award for Best Cinematography. The film, based on the story of women from Kerala allegedly forced to convert to Islam and join ISIS, polarized audiences and critics alike. While it was hailed by some as a bold and necessary story, others condemned it as propagandist and divisive.

Despite the backlash, The Kerala Story proved to be one of the most commercially successful and talked-about films of the year, grossing over ₹250 crore worldwide. Sen’s strong words against Filmfare now underline his ongoing rift with Bollywood’s mainstream circles — a clash between what he perceives as “authentic cinema” and what he calls “fake glamour.”

For many, Sen’s post has once again raised uncomfortable but necessary questions about whether Indian film awards truly celebrate cinematic excellence or simply reward popularity and influence within the industry.

The Movie’ Lands Streaming Date, Apple’s Last Big Theatrical Push

by jummy84 October 13, 2025
written by jummy84

It wasn’t long ago that Apple looked like it would be making a big push into theatrical releases, believing what has been true for most other distributors: a theatrical release and its subsequent marketing push helps a movie’s cachet once it (eventually) lands on streaming later. It worked with other studios — mixing up the partner on each — on the release of films like “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Paramount), “Napoleon” (Sony), and “Argylle” (Universal). And with “F1: The Movie” in partnership with yet another distributor in Warner Bros., it found its biggest hit to date — and quietly one of its biggest successes of the year at the box office — grossing $629 million worldwide.

Dave Kalema

Apple rewarded that success with a run in theaters that has lasted 14+ weeks, even as the film has already been available for premium rental since August. Few filmmakers get that sort of runway, but for Joseph Kosinski, who certainly did for “Top Gun: Maverick,” they were willing to give him the privilege, and his movie made the most of it.

Now Apple has finally announced a release date for the movie on streaming on what is now just Apple TV (not Apple TV+), hitting the service globally on December 12. It’ll be nearly six months since the film opened on June 27; a theatrical window like that is virtually unheard of.

But that’s no guarantee the same will happen to an Apple movie again. Despite its success, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the “F1” theatrical experiment is over.

Within a matter of months of each other, both Apple and Amazon were reported to be dipping their toes into theatrical releases. After some success with “Air” and a few others, Amazon MGM is now all in, targeting as many as 14 theatrical releases a year and offering them beefy theatrical windows before they land on streaming. The studio is still doing some direct-to-streaming movies, but it has made clear its priorities.

Apple, on the other hand, before “F1” had a string of costly misses and has since been rolling back that approach. The losses for movies like “Argylle” and “Fly Me to the Moon” were well-documented, and the straw that broke the camel’s back was its approach with the George Clooney-Brad Pitt thriller “Wolfs.” That movie was going to have a robust theatrical release up until Apple yanked the rug out at the last minute and said it would drop on streaming after little more than a week. The studio tried to placate the filmmakers by saying it had already greenlit a sequel to “Wolfs,” but director Jon Watts openly said that after the theatrical fiasco, he “no longer trusted” Apple as a creative partner.

Since then, some of its higher-profile films have all been quietly and modestly released in theaters before landing on streaming, if they got a theatrical release at all, a stark contrast to what was agreed upon and stuck to with “F1.” Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” spent a couple weeks in theaters, grossing just a reported $1.5 million, before hitting the streaming service. Paul Greengrass’ “The Lost Bus” did the same, opening in just a few select theaters and did not report box office totals.

Apple is not under the same pressure as its peers to produce for the box office and hope that streaming can pick up the slack. Back in March, a report suggested that Apple TV loses $1 billion a year on streaming and has in the vicinity of 45 million subscribers. It’s fine operating it as a loss-leader and using it as a means to continue selling iPhones.

The company also has never been bound to one approach, and it stands to reason that, if another project on the scale of “F1” with a director like Kosinski attached was on the table, it could pursue a similarly lengthy theatrical release strategy. Some of its upcoming movies sound like they could have that pedigree. There’s the Skydance-produced “Mayday” starring Ryan Reynolds, the Mattel movie “Matchbox” starring John Cena, and the Ben Stiller and Jake Johnson pickleball comedy “The Dink.” Have we mentioned movie theaters need more comedies like that last one?

bitchy | Prince Harry formally requested a Ravec risk assessment & the palace is big mad

In early May, a UK court rejected Prince Harry’s efforts to gain any kind of police protection for himself and his family within the UK. The Sussexes’ security was yanked in early 2020, partially as punishment for exiting the UK and partially as punishment for Harry’s lawsuits against the British press. The withdrawal of the Sussexes’ security was never about the actual threat-level or danger they faced in the UK. Which is bonkers to say out loud – a national security apparatus has no interest in protecting individuals under extreme risk, simply because the childishly deranged Windsors are mad that they can’t control a young family. Harry correctly called this an “Establishment stitch-up,” and security experts in the UK agree. Well, when Harry was in the UK last month, a stalker came within a few feet of Harry at two of his events. Harry had no police protection for the majority of his time during the visit. So once again, Harry is requesting that Ravec order a risk-assessment:

The Duke of Sussex has revived his security battle with the Home Office by writing to the home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, about his case. A formal request has been lodged by the prince with the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) which is overseen by the Home Office, asking for a risk-assessment process to be conducted.

Sources close to the process confirm that Harry has written to Mahmood, having previously been in correspondence with her predecessor, Yvette Cooper. A source close to the duke said that while he recognises his case will not be top of Mahmood’s priority list, he has asked for Ravec to “abide by its own rules” — that a risk management board (RMB) should be conducted for each member of the royal family and other qualifying VIPs every year.

“I can confirm that the duke has written to the new Home Secretary asking for a risk management board to be conducted,” the source said. “While he realises this will not be top of the incoming secretary’s in-tray it is something which should have happened a long time ago. We have had the can kicked down the road for quite a while now but all he’s asking is for Ravec to abide by its own rules which state that an RMB should be conducted each year. The last one for the duke was in 2019.”

Harry used his Ravec legal actions to understand how Ravec functions, to learn who sits on the committee and how they make their decisions. He’s pointing out that Ravec has failed to adhere to their own charter, their own regulations and rules. He’s once again appealing to a government official to break from the Establishment stitch-up and simply do a risk assessment. As you can imagine, this formal request has gone over poorly within the Establishment. Within 24 hours, King Charles and his courtiers (some of whom sit on Ravec) went to Roya Nikkhah at the Times with this:

The Duke of Sussex’s renewal of his battle with the government over security risks derailing his reconciliation with the King. Sources close to the monarch said Prince Harry’s decision to lobby Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, asking for his taxpayer-funded security in the UK to be reviewed “complicates things for the King”.

Harry currently receives “bespoke” protection on a case-by-case basis when he visits the UK after he lost his right to automatic round-the-clock security when he stepped back from royal life and moved to America in 2020. His letter to Mahmood, which was revealed on Friday, will once again make the King wary of contact with his younger son.

“It’s not going to help matters,” said a royal source. “We’re back to where we were.”

In September, the King, 76, and the duke, 41, met for the first time in 19 months, over a private 50-minute tea at Clarence House, following Harry’s pleas for “reconciliation” with his family after losing his legal battle with the government in May.

A royal source said: “The King cannot and will not lobby, that’s inappropriate. His representatives cannot advocate for policy outcomes, particularly in relation to his own family. The royal household representative on the Royal and VIP executive committee [Ravec], overseen by the Home Office, is not there to advocate a position for a member of the royal family. They are purely there as a liaison to the household.”

The source added: “If you put yourself in the mind of a father who is repeatedly told he should and could intervene, that is not very helpful, complicates matters and shows a lack of understanding about the reality of the situation.”

But sources close to the duke have repeatedly said he feels his father should intervene in the process. In an interview after the Court of Appeal ruling against him in May, the duke described the judgment as “a good old-fashioned establishment stitch up”, and told the BBC: “I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff.”

[From The Times]

Harry is only asking for a risk assessment, and this is the reaction. Mind-boggling. He’s only asking for Ravec to adhere to their own rules and the palace immediately rushes to threaten Harry with what amounts to “if you continue pursuing this, we won’t let you see your father again!” Besides which, Harry is correct! About all of it! Charles could intervene, and Charles’s courtiers could intervene and ensure the Sussexes’ security for a visit. Just like they intervened to withdraw the protection!!
