I Tried 7 Traditional Beauty Tips from Latina Creators

To me, my mom has always been the most beautiful woman in the world. When I was little, I’d rummage through her makeup (and come out clown-faced), waddle around in her high heels, and put on runway shows with my little sister, styled entirely from her closet. I was obsessed with her soft mint silks and the ‘90s maternity tops that fit me like maxi dresses. I’d watch her pop vitamin E pills and spread the oil across her face, pour paraffin wax over her arms, play meditative music, and brush her hair 100 times before bed. When I’d ask why she was so beautiful, she’d always say, “porque mi mami es bella y ella me enseño.”

Crazy Horse Inspired Naomi Osaka’s US Open Beauty Looks

by jummy84 September 7, 2025

Tennis star Naomi Osaka had a lot of fun at the 2025 US Open. Throughout the tournament, Osaka donned custom Nike outfits in jewel-toned shades, and when her longtime hairstylist Marty Harper saw the looks, he was inspired.

“We are always merging showmanship and functionality,” Harper says of the looks Osaka wore during the games. The two first met at a photoshoot, and have worked together for just over five years. “Naomi can come off as very stoic or reserved at first,” he reflects, “but once you get her to open up, you realize she’s simply one of the most tremendous humans ever.”

While the looks the duo created together for the French Open were “cute,” Harper shares that they wanted something a bit more serious for the U.S. tournament. It was a rose motif in the Nike looks that first got Harper’s mind flowing. Then, an inspiration from a much less likely source: a visit to the legendary Parisian cabaret show, Crazy Horse. “I was in Paris watching the Crazy Horse show, and there’s a part in it where everybody was wearing glittering hair accessories. That’s when I realized, ‘We need the roses crystallized.’”

“This look had a nod to Naomi’s Afro-Haitian roots with the curly hair texture, as well as a little bit of Harajuku as well,” hairstylist Marty Harper says.

“This was a really pretty look for Naomi” Harper says. “I wanted the roses to be cascading through.”

From there, things moved quickly. Harper’s friend, fellow hairstylist Clayton Hawkins, suggested professional bedazzler Kerin Rose Gold of A-Morir Studios for the job. They started with Gold 3-D printing the roses in a handful of different sizes before the perfect bouquet emerged. And then came the Labubus. Osaka delighted fans with an entourage of punny Labubus: Billie Jean Bling, Arthur Flashe, LaBillieBu, Althea Glitterson, and Andre Swaggassi, all in collaboration with A-Morir and in keeping with the Naomi Osaka school of style and attitude.

“I wanted to create these ornate, crown-like beauty moments for Naomi,” Harper says. “All I was thinking of was ‘let Naomi come and get her roses.’ Naomi has journeyed: she’s a champion, she speaks for women, she speaks for mental health, she does it for mothers, as well as doing it for herself. She’s opened the door for a lot of young women.”

For the final look, Harper called upon braider Tiana Amani to create the stitch braid cornrows. From there, he created different ponytail hair pieces that Osaka could wear for the walk-on, but easily remove when the game actually started. Each of the ponytails had a different texture—loose and curly, long locs—and were finished off with roses affixed to chopsticks.

The Year’s Buzziest Beauty Launch Serves Lunch

Would Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece be served a slice of Principessa cake? I wondered while stepping into Sant Ambroeus SoHo, where guests gathered to celebrate the launch of La Beauté Louis Vuitton. Instead, LV-etched glassware filled with champagne and spritzes awaited. Just down the street at the Louis Vuitton store, Dame Pat McGrath had spent the morning unveiling refillable lipsticks, shadow compacts, and elaborate leather beauty cases to crowds of beauty and fashion insiders eager for a first look since Vogue broke the news this spring. Now, inside the neighborhood-favorite café, McGrath was finally able to relax with familiar faces after months of working with the house on a beauty line that meant “having, in a way, no limits and being able to push the boundaries,” she said with a smile. “Now, we’re celebrating together—it’s so important to see all of my friends here. I’m so happy.”

The talent in the room alone could have filled a cover shoot: longtime collaborators Guido Palau and Jimmy Paul were on hand, as well as stylists Kate Young and Leslie Fremar, who knew McGrath from their early days at Vogue. “When I was an assistant at Vogue, most of my time was spent on set with Pat and I always admired her,” Fremar recalled. “She’s so creative and always pushes the envelope, and you just knew her products were going to be amazing.” Even her children, she added, have been curious about the line: The packaging is beautiful. The presentation is beautiful. The quality is beautiful. You wouldn’t expect anything less of Louis Vuitton and Pat.

Guests dined on caprese, branzino, and mixed berries served on Vuitton tableware flown in for the occasion. “I do all of my business lunches here because it’s right by my office,” said Young, noting the special touches like dahlias arranged in the collection’s shades and napkins tied with Vuitton luggage tags. Already test-driving the new lipstick, she said, “I really like the color I’m wearing today.” Tomorrow, Young heads to the Toronto Film Festival. This weekend, others will be at the Armory Show and the US Open as the multilayered parfait of September culture continues. As Lauren Santo Domingo put it: “I dropped my daughter off for her first day of school, and then I came here for my first day of fashion week.”

Dieux Founders Joyce de Lemos and Charlotte Palermino’s Favorite Beauty Products

The Lineup is a monthly series where we’re giving you an inside peek at the beauty lineups of the most sought-after experts and tastemakers in the industry. Get ready for a behind-the-scenes look at all the can’t-live-without products that make their worlds go ’round.

I hate to break it to you, but some beauty products are nothing more than Instagrammable packaging. I love aesthetic branding and a shelfie-worthy lineup as much as anyone else, but let’s be real: If a product isn’t giving actual results, I won’t be repurchasing. So when I came across Dieux‘s Instant Angel Moisturizer ($45) and ethereal Forever Eye Masks ($25), I was a bit skeptical about whether the formulas would be as heavenly as the branding. Spoiler: They are, and there’s so much more to this one-of-a-kind brand than meets the eye.

Dieux’s story began in 2018, when Charlotte Palermino, a multi-hyphenate media creative, pitched Joyce de Lemos on the idea of creating a CBD-infused skincare product. Joyce was a cosmetic chemist for brands like Skinceuticals, Versed, and Kiehl’s, so she and Palermino teamed up to create this product the right way, complete with clinical studies and meticulous formulation. Two years later, their debut product, Deliverance ($69), was born. Since then, they’ve built a beloved brand known for inclusivity, transparency, and sustainably sourced, science-driven formulas.

Dieux Founders Favorite Beauty Products

“When I was younger, my obsession with beauty was so different because it was framed around beauty standards,” de Lemos tells me. “Creating products has made me realize how much inclusivity matters. Our entire community is super diverse, so we test on all different skin tones and types, and we try to make sure that everybody feels seen.”

Dieux also prioritizes education, promoting it through the brand’s Skin Bibles blog and Sun-Screener ingredient checker. The brand even shares each product’s sustainability report (something many brands shy away from). So, in the spirit of transparency, I asked Palermino and de Lemos to share their hot takes on the skincare myths you need to stop believing, and the no-B.S. advice to follow instead.

What’s a skincare myth people need to stop believing?

Joyce de Lemos: Let’s get spicy: Comedogenicity. In essence, the dose makes the poison. When people studied comedogenicity, it was a super archaic method where they took an ingredient like shea butter at 100% concentration and rubbed it in a rabbit’s ear to see if it would create comedones. Naturally, that’s a lot of shea butter to put in there! Typically, when you use that kind of ingredient in a formulation, it’s at a certain percentage, like 0.5% or 0.25%. It’s also going to have other ingredients in it that are going to meld with the chemical structure. It’s probably more helpful if they tested the entire formulation for comedogenicity, right? It depends on your skin type, too; what might be comedogenic for one person could be different from another person. So, before you’re quick to get rid of something because it’s on a list that says that it’s comedogenic, just note, it’s probably more helpful to understand if the entire formulation has been tested for that.
