UK events industry adds £11.5bn to UK economy

According to the latest Economic Impact Study published today by the Events Industry Alliance (EIA), the business events (conferences and exhibitions) industry continues to grow, uplifting the UK economy by £11.5 billion business sales in 2024.

Key findings from the report finds the UK business events industry:

  • Adds £11.5 billion to UK economy
  • Economic contribution has grown by almost 6% over last two years
  • Supports over 126,000 jobs
  • Attracts more than 7.2million visitors to the UK each year

The figures unveiled today at the Labour Party Conference in ACC Liverpool, where the EIA joined politicians, industry and association members at the EIA sponsored event – “Backing British Events: A Growth Sector for Labour’s Economy.”

Rachel Swann, chief operating officer, energy division at dmg events and EIA chair commented, “The report quantifies the economic significance of exhibitions in the UK and shows the industry has now exceeded pre-covid contributions and significantly grown from £10.9 billion output in 2023. The industry proves its resilience year on year but still needs support and recognition from the Government.”

Swann continued, “The report is invaluable to us and our industry, particularly in our quest to highlight the importance of the business events industry to the Government as it provides a clear snapshot of industry metrics and direct spending, analysis of the economic impact and the methods used to calculate those.”

The study incorporates data from the Size and Scale Index for Exhibitions (SASIE) report published earlier this year, which revealed 1,145 exhibitions were held in 2024. Based on a total economic impact of £11.5 (€13.6) billion and a total of 132,000 exhibiting companies, total output per exhibitor amounted to approximately £87,000 (€103,000) in 2024.

The events attracted 7.2 million visitors who, along with exhibitors, produce a substantial multiplier spending in hospitality, travel and hotels.

Rachel Parker, CEO, AEV and EIA director said, “The organisers, venues and event suppliers generate 126,000 jobs accounting for £6.0 billion of UK gross domestic product (GDP) and support other areas of the economy further emphasising the impact of the business events industry.”

Swann concluded, “The figures shed a positive light on our industry, it shows that business events are a vital driver of trade, innovation and regional growth across the UK and provides encouraging evidence for the Government to take note of the importance of our contribution to the economy across the UK.”

The report is available for download via the EIA website – www.eventsindustryalliance.com.

Peacock Adds Amazon Prime Video Subscription: Analysis

If we asked you how many streaming services is too many streamers, you’d probably at best say a number you can count on both hands. And yet Amazon Prime Video via its subscriptions has “more than a 100” different streamers you’ve probably never heard of that you can get without needing a hundred different logins and passwords.

On Thursday, Amazon and NBCUniversal announced that Peacock Premium would now be available as a subscription add-on via Prime Video. It means instead of subscribing directly to Peacock, you can get all of Peacock’s content by adding it to your Prime membership (it’s priced at $16.99 per month and $169.99 per year and is ad-free). That in itself isn’t notable, but with Peacock joining the fray, it leaves Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu the only major streamers that you can’t get on Amazon.

Cliff Curtis in 'Chief of War'

HBO Max returned to Amazon not long ago after being away, and Apple TV+ joining the service was a big coup considering the two tech giants are massive competitors and that Apple fancies itself as its own one-stop shop for people to stream whatever they want. Some of the other subscriptions you can add include Paramount+, FOX One, MGM+, Crunchyroll, STARZ, BET+, AMC+, and BritBox, to name just a few.

While those are all streamers that have their own apps you can subscribe to directly, Amazon also has plenty that don’t have their own terrestrial apps you can download and are only available through places like Amazon or other channels. One we previously reported on was Wonder Project, which is the faith-based company behind “House of David,” and today they announced it launches on October 5, just to add to the hundreds of services.

Because Amazon also offers many of these streamers as part of bundles, it makes it that much less likely that you cancel Amazon Prime entirely. It also helps Amazon as a brand, because although Peacock may officially be the home to “Poker Face” and “The Traitors,” if you’re accessing those shows and HBO’s and Paramount’s all through one platform on Amazon, the average user begins to not even be able to tell the difference.

Such is the utopian vision of streaming that many executives have long touted, that there will be one super streamer to rule them all and you won’t have to do guess work to figure out which service has the show you actually want to watch (some people used to call this cable). Amazon is inching closer to being that leader, but they’d have to still make up a lot of ground if it was going to convince Netflix and Disney that they need it. Netflix is dominant enough on its own that other studios — including NBCUniversal — continue to license their content to Netflix, and that Netflix doesn’t need to rely on any other bundles to keep people from canceling. Disney meanwhile has taken great pains (and billions of dollars) to merge the functionality of Disney+, Hulu, and the newly launched ESPN streamer into one place.

But Amazon must be doing something right if even Peacock sees the value of hitching its wagon to the big guy.

Marshals’ Adds Seven to Cast, Including Three ‘Yellowstone’ Alums

The upcoming “Yellowstone” spinoff at CBS is rounding out its main cast.

“Y: Marshals,” which will see Luke Grimes reprise the role of Kayce Dutton, has added seven new cast members. Those include fellow “Yellowstone” alums Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, and Brecken Merrill. The three will reprise their roles as Thomas Rainwater, Mo, and Tate Dutton respectively.

The official logline states:

“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Kayce Dutton (Grimes) joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

The new series regulars include: Arielle Kebbel (“Rescue: Hi-Surf,” “Ballers) as Belle, Ash Santos (“Pulse,” “Mayor of Kingstown”) as Andrea, and Tatanka Means (“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Reservation Dogs”) as Miles. All three will play members of the U.S. Marshals. In addition, Brett Cullen (“Apollo 13,” “Joker”) will appear in the recurring role of Harry Gifford, the head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana. It was previously announced that Logan Marshall-Green would play Pete Calvin, a friend from Kayce’s time in the military.

Kebbel is repped by Independent Artists Group, Untitled Entertainment and Hansen Jacobson. Santos is repped by M88, Gersh, Platform Public Relations and Myman Greenspan. Cullen is repped by Innovative Artists and Lovett Management. Means is repped by Amsel, Eisenstadt, Frazier & Hinojosa Inc. and Authentic Talent and Literary Management. Birmingham is repped by Amsel, Eisenstadt, Frazier & Hinojosa Inc. Merrill is repped by Industry Entertainment.

“Y: Marshals” was ordered to series at CBS in May for the 2025-2026 broadcast season. The series is slated to debut at midseason. The initial episode is being written by Spencer Hudnut and directed by Greg Yaitanes. Hudnut also serves as executive producer and showrunner. “Yellowstone” mastermind Taylor Sheridan executive produces along with David C. Glasser for 101 Studios as well as John Linson, Art Linson, Grimes, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Greg Yaitanes, Michael Friedman, and Keith Cox. Paramount Television Studios will produce. The series will be distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

“Y: Marshals” is not the only “Yellowstone” spinoff in the works. There is also a new series centered on Beth and Rip, which recently added Annette Bening to its cast. Sheridan is also prepping the latest prequel series, “1944,” for Paramount+.
