Kelly Reichardt Interview on ‘The Mastermind’

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

If you asked every Kelly Reichardt fan to blindly predict how the auteur would follow the 2022 release of “Showing Up,” nobody would have guessed she’d make an art heist movie set in New England. But watch a few minutes of “The Mastermind” and you’ll see that it’s a Reichardt film in every sense, even if it externally seems like a departure from the themes and locales she usually prefers.

Loosely inspired by a 1970 news story in which an art museum in Worcester, Massachusetts, was robbed while two teenage girls did homework in the gallery, the ironically titled film stars Josh O’Connor as a working-class family man who ruins his life in record time after making the impulsive decision to rip off his own local museum. Unsurprisingly, the film is far more interested in exploring the psyche of O’Connor’s J.B. Mooney than dazzling you with art heist spectacle, and Reichardt’s long, meditative takes pair beautifully with the lonely moments in which Mooney slowly realizes that he can’t go home — and wouldn’t have much waiting for him if he could.

'The Sea'

But it’s missing one major common denominator of a Reichardt film: a Pacific Northwestern setting. Save for her 1994 debut “River of Grass” (which was set in her native Florida), and her 2016 masterpiece “Certain Women” (which moved the action a whopping two states over to Montana), all of Reichardt’s previous films have been set in Oregon. But Reichardt, who spends most of her time on the East Coast due to her teaching job at Bard College in upstate New York, was itching for a change of cinematic scenery.

“I wanted to get out of Oregon for a bit and have a new landscape to look at,” Reichardt said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “Being from New York and originally from Florida, Oregon was so unique to me and so inspiring and exciting because it just was so different than flat Miami or New York City, where I lived. So that was all cool. A lot of those stories were written with Jon Raymond, and we built a little world out there to work from. And Oregon’s a really diverse state, so you have forest and desert, and we never really made use of the ocean, but I needed a change. I teach in New York on the East Coast, and I’ve lived on the East Coast for a long time, and suddenly I could sort of see the light of the East Coast, literally the light, feel the difference of it [compared to] the West Coast… You can see something when you spend time away from it.”

“The Mastermind” moved the action to Framingham, Massachusetts, and the original newspaper story that Reichardt found about the Worcester art heist gave her a starting point to explore a story about the tragically dated concept of a small town having its own art museum. The setting catches America at a point of transition between an era of middle-class prosperity and the economic decay that was on the horizon.

“I really wanted to shoot something on the East Coast. And this size of city, the industrial town that has little museum, that the sort of middle class residents are keeping going, that’s Massachusetts to me,” she said. “That happens to be a place where I went to art school. And so that seemed right. And the Worcester Museum robbery with the young girls, that was a good jumping off point.”

The role of Mooney wasn’t written for O’Connor, but Reichardt was inspired to work with him after being drawn to his “timeless face” and meeting him through a mutual friend. There was an instant chemistry on set (along with O’Connor’s co-star Alana Haim, who gives a brilliantly understated performance as Mooney’s fed-up wife trying to hold the family together amid his antics). Reichardt said that shooting “The Mastermind” was the best filmmaking experience of her life (“First Cow” is the runner-up, if you were wondering). The fact that it came after the stressful experience of filming “Showing Up” during the pandemic only added to the joy.

What does a filmmaker like Reichardt, who has spent her entire career making delicate, unapologetically uncommercial films, think about the current indie film landscape? The auteur is as stressed as any of us, but she’s not convinced that it was ever much better.

“It always feels precarious, and it feels precarious now. I mean, AI is a threat on every level. That makes life feel precarious, much less filmmaking,” she said. “Who’s going to keep financing films? When you’re putting a film out, you have to compete in this realm with films that are just cranking in so much money that it just makes the smallest film so expensive. But I have to say that’s been the story of independent filmmaking since I started. And somehow, here we are. But I don’t know, to be honest, the whole world seems so precarious. I mean, the state of independent filmmaking is probably not our biggest problem. But obviously I care because that’s what I’m into, and I hope it keeps going. But I kind of always have a feeling when I’m making a film like, ‘Well, this is probably the last one. Can’t believe we’re getting another one done.’”

Reichardt might enjoy a bit of gallows humor about her own career longevity, but she’s hoping that “The Mastermind” isn’t anything close to her last film. She doesn’t need filmmaking — her day job as a teacher is a lot less stressful — but Reichardt said that she has enough film ideas to keep her band of repeat collaborators like cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt, assistant director Chris Carroll, and production designer Anthony Gasparro busy for the rest of their lives.

“I mean, it’s a lot easier to teach than to make films, to be honest,” she said with a laugh. “Filmmaking is super, super challenging. I mean, just as far as the craftsmanship of it, of shooting and editing. And just the idea of visual storytelling is forever interesting to me. And I don’t think I could accomplish it all in one lifetime. I don’t know, you choke, you get better at things. But new challenges bring new trials. And yeah, oh, my God, we still have, if we’re allowed, we have lots we’d like to do.”

A MUBI release, “The Mastermind” is now playing in theaters.

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort Festive Programming

The InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is trading tinsel for tridents this December, unveiling an ambitious holiday program inspired by the myth of “Atlantis: The Lost Kingdom.” The Indian Ocean property, already known for its overwater villas and cinematic sunsets, is transforming into an immersive “Celebration for the Oceans” — a series of performances, residencies, and dining events designed to blend fantasy with environmental reverence.

The resort’s programming, running from Dec. 22 through early January, includes large-scale productions like “Poseidon’s Banquet,” where guests dine over a reef illuminated to resemble a submerged palace, and nightly mermaid ballets staged in the infinity pool. The season’s finale, on New Year’s Eve, culminates in the dramatic “Trident of Light,” a rising ocean sculpture that ignites a fireworks display across Maamunagau’s lagoon.

Michelin-starred chef Tom Aikens headlines the culinary slate, with a 12-day residency featuring tasting dinners at The Lighthouse, cooking classes and a private yacht journey complete with caviar, champagne and a stargazing session led by the island’s resident astronomer. UK artist Florence Super will host ocean-themed art workshops and exhibit sustainable works made from recycled materials during her residency, part of the resort’s ongoing emphasis on marine awareness and conservation.

Programming extends beyond fine dining and art: Santa’s island arrival, a kid-focused Pirate Cruise, and interactive experiences with British children’s entertainers Sharky & George round out the family offerings. Wellness guests can opt for Maldivian-inspired spa treatments, ocean detox rituals or sound healing sessions under the stars.

Over the past few years, the Maldives has quietly become Hollywood’s favorite hideaway — a discreet but ultra-luxury alternative to the usual Aspen or St. Barts circuit. A-listers from Zendaya and Tom Holland to Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have been spotted on the archipelago’s private islands, often sharing sun-drenched glimpses of overwater breakfasts and bioluminescent lagoons. It’s easy to see the appeal: just a seaplane ride from Malé, the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort has positioned itself at the high end of this cinematic escape market, catering to those who prize privacy, design, and curated experience over overt opulence. The property, built across a 35-acre coral reef atoll, has earned a reputation for its immersive programming — from astronomy sessions and sustainability workshops to chef residencies and private yacht dining.

The destination’s rise coincides with a broader shift in celebrity travel, where the emphasis has moved from visibility to retreat. In the Maldives, anonymity becomes luxury’s final frontier — a place where global names can go offline without losing access to world-class cuisine or cinematic settings. The InterContinental’s “Atlantis: The Lost Kingdom” concept plays directly into that fantasy: a self-contained world that’s both exclusive and experiential.

‘Black Phone 2’ Opening to $23 Million

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

SATURDAY AM: Refresh for more analysis and chart… In what has been a heavy-loaded horror year, every other studio seemed to be winning with the genre except Blumhouse. Until now: the horror house of Purge & Five Nights at Freddy’s finally makes a comeback this weekend with Black Phone 2 which in its opening is ahead of its predecessor with a 3-day of $24.4M.

The sequel throughout last night continued to trend up against comps, which is a great sign for a horror film. A -22% ease from Friday today is expected with $8.3M. That’s better than the first Saturday of 2021’s Black Phone which declined -26% from Friday with a $7.5M take. Overall CinemaScore is a B, which is very good for a horror film on that exit poll’s scale. In ComScore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak, women under 25 (who showed up at 22%) loved the R-rated movie the most at 85% postive score and 76% definite recommend along with 13-17 year olds (12% more than Tron:Ares‘ 6% last weekend) who gave it an 88% positive score and massive 83% definite recommend. Overall definite recommend, the barometer for success on PostTrak, is a great 63%.

Audiences are picking up Black Phone 2 in the West, Midwest and South Central. Shared PLFs with Tron: Ares are driving close to a third of the gross with the AMC Burbank the nation’s highest grossing cinema with close to $31K so far.

The weekend’s other starry wide entry, Lionsgate’s Good Fortune, which at net $30M cost as much as Black Phone 2, ain’t faring well with an estimated $6M (we’re still waiting on the studio’s figure). B+ CinemaScore, and a pretty good 59% definite recommend, but nobody is going. At a time when we want comedies to truly make a return at the box office, this Keanu Reeves, Seth Rogen, Aziz Ansari feature isn’t calling the masses out despite good revies at 78% certified fresh and a 77% audience score. The film, an homage to movies like Warren Beatty’s Heaven Can Wait, is playing ala an arthouse movie, on the coasts. Largely guys over 25 (42%) and women over 25 (39%) with hardly anyone under 25 at 19%.

With a 166 million reach across TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X, Good Fortune‘s social media universe is paced 13% behind other comedy norms, RelishMix comping the Ansari directed movie to Naked Gun, Caught Stealing, Joy Ride and Honey Don’t. Rogen counts 24.5M social media followers, Keke Palmer is 23.2M, with full force from Ansari at 11.9M. Reeves is still off the grid for his films. As far as the sniping online, RelishMix noticed “Mixed-negative leaning chatter for Good Fortune hits on recycled looks, AI vibes, and some misplaced casting. Keanu’s Wick-hair-and-beard fatigue is real with complaints like, ‘You’d think Keanu would change his look for this movie. Instead it’s John Wick with costume store wings. Looks lame to me.’”.

FRIDAY MIDDAY UPDATE: Blumhouse is looking at its biggest opening year-to-date after four movies with Black Phone 2, which is shaping up for a $23 million start after a Friday and previews of $10.1M at 3,411 sites.

After an autumn of lost hopes, thank God. That’s $600,00 lighter than the 2021 first installment’s opening, and we’ll take it.

Giving the Universal release some extra power are 1,000 exhibitor PLF screens as well as 170 AMC-only Dolby Cinema screens.

Second place goes to Disney’s Tron: Ares at 4,000 sites with a 65% second-weekend decline, steeper than the movie’s pre-Covid comp Blade Runner 2049, which was down 53% in its weekend 2. The Jared Leto movie’s three-day is $11.5M, and its second Friday is $3.3M. The 10-day running total by Sunday will stand at $54.9M, 10% behind Blade Runner 2049 at the same point in time and -37% behind 2010’s Tron: Legacy (its 10-day was $87.3M) which had the beneficial bounce of Christmas.

Third belongs to Lionsgate’s Good Fortune at 2,990 theaters, with $2.5M today and bad fortune at $6M for the net $30M feature.

Warner Bros’ fourth weekend of One Battle After Another at 2,532 sites is seeing $3.8M over Friday-Sunday and $1M today, for a running cume by Sunday of $61.7M.

Fifth is Paramount/Miramax’s Roofman at 3,370 with a second Friday of $1.1M and a second weekend of $3.65M (-55%), for a 10-day total of $15.4M.

Angel Studios is opening the Matt Whitaker-directed WWII period movie Truth & Treason at 2,088 theaters to $2.2M for the weekend after $1M today. The plot: One teen risks everything to expose the truth as he questions his loyalty to his German homeland. With the Gestapo closing in, he must decide what it really means to be a good German.

PREVIOUSLY, Friday AM: Universal and Blumhouse’s Black Phone 2 dialed up $2.6 million in previews Thursday at 2,900 theaters from showtimes that began at 2 p.m. That’s just under the $3M the original 2021 movie pulled in before bowing to $23.6M.

Black Phone 2 previews are in line with that of Paramount’s Smile 2, which opened in the same weekend a year ago with $2.5M in previews and a three-day total of $23M.

The hope is that Blumhouse, after seeing a lackluster streak in a horror-laden box office year for the industry, can actually get a break and post an opening that’s robust. The Scott Derrickson-directed sequel is figured to land between $20M-$30M. Reviews are solid at 74% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The first Black Phone was 81% with RT critics and had a B+ CinemaScore.

The setup for Black Phone 2 is that Ethan Hawke’s The Grabber is out there in the real world, not holed up in some neighborhood house in 1970s suburbia. Watch out. Production cost for Black Phone 2 is net $30M.

After the less-than-par opening for Disney’s Tron: Ares, and sophisticated adult movies in free-fall (I’m sorry, One Battle After Another is the exception and faring better at a near $58M than everything in its wake, i.e., Roofman, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Caught Stealing, etc.), it’s doldrums time at the autumn box office, though according to ComScore for, from Labor Day through last Sunday, the season is flat with a year ago at $770.7M. It would be nice to finally see a movie meet its tracking forecast.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate has the comedy Good Fortune, directed by and starring Aziz Ansari along with Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen. It’s expected to ring up under $10M at 2,985 locations. The movie cost a net $30 million in line with other Lionsgate movies; the pic, you’ll remember, was impacted by a start-and-stop with the writers and actors strikes. Coming out of its TIFF world premiere, Good Fortune is 79% fresh. Previews last night were $725,000 at 2,500 sites. Note that Roofman, another adult-skewing (largely guys, ironically, for a Channing Tatum movie) title last week, did $1M in previews before posting an $8M start.

Check out our interview below with Ansari at our TIFF studio:

Disney’s Tron: Ares ends the week with $43.4M, a number many were hopeful the net $180M production would open at. This movie is pacing slightly behind another Jared Leto sci-fi property, also with a finite fan base, 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, which posted a first week of $45.4M. Blade Runner 2049 with an A- CinemaScore held at -53% in weekend 2 with $15.4M, and Tron: Ares is expected to be steeper with -60% off its B+ CinemaScore. Tron Ares will keep the Imax and majority of PLFs and their great showtimes this weekend.

This week’s top 5

  1. Tron Ares (Dis) 4,000 theaters, Thu $1.5M (-20% from Wed), Week $43.4M/Wk 1
  2. Roofman (Par) 3,362 theaters, Thu $567K (-23%), Week $11.8M/Wk 1
  3. One Battle After Another (WB) 3,127 theaters, Thu $545K (-19% from Wed), Wk $10.1M (-38%), Total $57.9M/Wk 3
  4. Gabby’s Dollhouse (Uni) 3,049 theaters, Thu $192K (-8%), Wk $5.2M (-21%), Total $28.2M/Wk 3
  5. Conjuring: Last Rites (NL/WB) 2,334 theaters, Thu $195K (-25%), Wk $4.36M (-24%), Total $173.8M/Wk 6

Fulham v Arsenal Premier League TV channel, live stream, kick-off time

Premier League leaders Arsenal head across London to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

Mikel Arteta’s side capitalised on Liverpool’s wobble ahead of the international break and won back-to-back games to move top of the table.

The Gunners will look to pick up where they left off in their first Premier League game back but have found this weekend’s hosts a tricky proposition in recent years – winning just one of their last four meetings.

The break came at a good time for Fulham, who had lost consecutive games away at Bournemouth and Aston Villa, and they will relish the return to West London.

Marco Silva’s side are unbeaten at Craven Cottage this term and hope to have striker Raul Jimenez back fit in time for Saturday’s game.

RadioTimes.com has rounded up everything you need to know about how to watch Fulham v Arsenal on TV and online.

‘The Rainmaker’ Season 2 Details Revealed: Everything to Know

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

The case came to a satisfying end in The Rainmaker‘s finale on Friday (October 17) night. But is there more to come from this book-to-screen world?

The first season of the new USA Network series followed Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan), a brand-new lawyer, as he took on the case of the century against a major healthcare corporation on behalf of his client, a grieving mother who was convinced her son’s death was the hospital’s fault. In the process, he had to go toe-to-toe with his own ex-girlfriend, Sarah Plankmore (Madison Iseman), and the man who’d fired him on his first day, Leo Drummond (John Slattery), on behalf of the ragtag team assembled by Bruiser (Lana Parrilla). All the while, they dealt with a serial killer on the loose, a neighbor’s abusive husband, and nonstop twists in the courtroom proceedings.

So, will the show return for Season 2? And what might a second season of the series entail? TV Insider talked to the cast and creatives to get the scoop.

Will The Rainmaker Season 2 happen?

At this time, USA Network has not announced a second season order for The Rainmaker. However, the ratings were very strong at the start of the series, with 16 million viewers, and it became the most-watched new series for the network in years throughout its run. In other words, the answer, at this time, is a definite maybe.

What will happen in The Rainmaker Season 2?

Creator Michael Seitzman told TV Insider that while he was pondering a second season, he hadn’t quite landed on whether it would involve bringing back the first season’s slate of characters or not.

“I don’t know. I have a lot of ideas for Season 2, but none of them have really calcified yet in my mind, and some of them include those characters, and some of them don’t. There’s a part of me that wonders if we just completely wipe the slate clean in Season 2, and the characters who are not in trouble come back, and the other characters who were in trouble, we treat that as backstory. There’s another part of me that wonders how I could bring them back, but it’s a tricky thing. I have to think about it some more,” he said. “But I really love these characters, so, it’s very hard to say goodbye to them. I also really love the actors who played the characters. It was a very special experience for all of us. We all went to Dublin together. Everybody got very close. We worked really closely together, and we felt very proud of what we created together by the end. So, saying goodbye to the actors is as hard as, I think, the characters.”

Who will star in The Rainmaker Season 2?

A cast list for a second season hasn’t been announced, and, as noted above, even Seitzman hasn’t decided a creative direction for it. However, Milo Callaghan is ready to jump on board if it happens.

“I’m here for seven seasons, so let’s go,” he said. “We’re always having conversations… I hope so. I hope we get the gang back together, and I hope we meet another adversary on the road, and I’m excited.”

He’s not the only Season 1 star who’d like to return to their roles, either. P.J. Byrne revealed that his hope for a second season would see Bruiser’s firm take on even bigger nemeses: “Honest to God, I want to see, now that we’ve sort of got a little jingle in our pocket, if you will, and we’ve finally got the seal of good housekeeping that the world can see we are truly a super duper law firm, let’s go fight bigger, badder humans,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lana Parrilla said she would like to explore more of Bruiser’s personal life in Season 2 and she’d want to “dive into her relationship with men a little bit more, what’s going on there?”

To Stop Misuses of Sora, Estates Are Using AI to Fight Back Against AI

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s been not even a month since OpenAI launched its latest AI video generation model Sora 2, and the issues that have cropped up from its hyper-realistic depictions of both copyrighted characters and real-life public figures have emerged quicker than people can swat them down.

This very morning on Friday, October 17, OpenAI jointly issued a statement with Martin Luther King Jr.‘s estate saying it has “paused” Sora generating Dr. King after users made “disrespectful depictions of Dr. King’s image,” and that it would be strengthening “guardrails” for historical figures. We can only imagine what sort of nasty stuff had to be out there before OpenAI took action.

OpenAI maintained in its statement that it believes there are still “strong free speech interests” around depicting historical figures. We saw one video made by Sora that features the likeness of Dr. King saying he had a dream that one day he could get “that fucking light” to stop blinking above his bed, so yeah, call the First Amendment lawyers. OpenAI also is sticking to the idea that representatives or estate owners “can request that their likeness not be used in Sora cameos.”

That aspect of wanting people to opt-out, as we previously asked several attorneys, is not how any sort of legal right works. The idea that every public figure who doesn’t want their image depicted — especially the dead ones — needs to tell OpenAI to stop before they will comply is mind-boggling. And it doesn’t mean that OpenAI hasn’t already trained Sora on that public figure’s likeness, it just means you theoretically won’t be able to generate that person anymore.

But the AI issues aren’t going away. Someone else just generated a Sora video in the time it took you to read these last few paragraphs. So estates and rights owners are starting to fight fire with fire.

Earlier this week, talent management firm CMG Worldwide partnered with an artificial intelligence company called Loti AI that uses AI to scan the web for misappropriated content and issue takedowns, and the company works with both public figures and everyday individuals. The company’s boilerpate says it’s 95 percent effective at finding AI-generated videos, images, or audio and getting them taken down within a day.

It’s only a handful of clients so far that have quickly agreed to receive the protections, though it will be available to any of CMG’s other clients that ask. The short list of deceased public figures for which it manages the rights and who now get these protections include: Burt Reynolds, Christopher Reeve, Ginger Rogers, Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Raquel Welch, Andre the Giant, Joe Louis, Macho Man Randy Savage, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, David Ruffin, Albert Einstein, Gen. George Patton, Mark Twain, Neil Armstrong, and Rosa Parks.

Luke Arrigoni, the CEO of Loti AI, told IndieWire that it’s not lost on him that they’re using AI to fight AI. But his models are trained without needing to build entire models on all of an individual’s personal assets. The company uses voice and facial recognition tools to identify explicit content, deepfakes, impersonators, false endorsements, and even things that aren’t AI generated, and it automates the discovery and takedown process.

Arrigoni says that, while other companies that have specialized in deepfake detection are now having a harder time considering how lifelike Sora videos have become, the facial recognition tools Loti uses are making things easier to find, even with new videos coming rapidly.

“It is hard to play whack-a-mole at the scale in which Sora is creating the problem unless you’ve basically built a system that automates the takedowns, automates the discovery process, like we have,” Arrigoni said. “We kind of thought the world was going this way, and so about a year or so ago, we started building tools that would make this moment easy to manage for public figures and posthumous estates and intellectual property holders too. [It’s] really practical. What we do, it’s very easy for us to find, and it’s very easy for us to remove.”

Zelda Williams and Robin Williams arrive at the

That might be of interest to Zelda Williams, who quite recently pleaded with people to stop sending her AI videos of her late father Robin Williams, writing, “it’s dumb, it’s a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it’s NOT what he’d want.”

“To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to ‘this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that’s enough’, just so other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening,” she wrote in an Instagram statement. “You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else’s throat hoping they’ll give you a little thumbs up and like it. Gross.”

Arrigoni says Hollywood has been jumping on AI protection services like his, and he’s been taking calls from major agencies and rights holders. He has approached things cautiously yet optimistically to see how they can still collaborate with the tech giants, like OpenAI and Google. And while he has a bullish view that the tech industry is going to establish the rules it needs, OpenAI will need to rethink its opt-out strategy if it wants to play ball.

“Opt-in should have been the only thing. It shouldn’t have even been called a thing. If you want to participate, there’s a safe mechanism to make sure everyone can come on board and it is actually you and not someone also scamming the Sora system,” Arrigoni said. “Opt-out isn’t a good strategy. Opt-out is something that is going to, out of no fault of Sora, people are going to abuse those systems unless people can participate and say, these are the rules that I have for my likeness.”

Michael Mann Awarded Prix Lumière in Lyon

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

The 2025 Lumière Film Festival reached its climax Friday night with the presentation of its top honor, the Prix Lumière, to Michael Mann, celebrating the filmmaker of “Ali,” “Heat” and “The Insider.”

The ceremony kicked off with a surprise message from Quentin Tarantino, projected on the Amphithéâtre’s giant screen. “It seems we have a message from someone,” said Lumière festival director and Cannes chief Thierry Frémaux, introducing an email from Tarantino – one of the first Prix Lumière laureates, honored back in 2013 – welcoming Mann “into the club.”

As he took to the stage to receive his award from the hands of 2024 laureate Isabelle Huppert, Mann was visibly moved. “Now I know why so many directors like Clint Eastwood and Tim Burton are speechless when they come up here. This is fantastic. Thank you so much.”

He went on to recall the moment he decided to become a filmmaker: “The idea to make films entered my life when I was 19 or 20, on a cold and brilliantly clear winter night in Wisconsin after screening a silent film. I was walking downhill from the campus buildings and it was as if the skies parted, then a giant hand came down and said, you should direct films. It’s one of those rare moments in all of our lives when profound truth takes you over and there’s no negotiation, no second thinking, this is what you’ve got to do. And I’m profoundly fortunate to have found artistic work I feel so impelled to do throughout my lifetime.

Mann closed his speech with gratitude: “I receive this wonderful honor with gratitude on behalf of the spirit we all share to make dramatic cinema – and also on behalf of that same imaginative spirit residing within every person here, to be impacted upon, transported by, and aroused by all that cinema does. Tonight will be an enduring memory for me. I am totally, profoundly grateful for this honor. Thank you very much.”

Before handing over the award to Mann, Isabelle Huppert, last year’s laureate, paid homage to Mann, calling him “a filmmaker who listens to his actors, looks at them with curiosity, and offers them roles that both challenge and reveal them.”

“To receive the Prix Lumière here in Lyon is not only a reward, it’s a return to the source — to that original light of which you have become one of the great heirs,” she said. “Thank you, Michael Mann, for continuing to surprise us, to unsettle us, to share our obsessions, and for making cinema a place of tireless exploration, always renewed. Thank you for your demanding, lyrical, and sensual body of work, and for your fidelity to the light itself. May that light continue to be with you. And long live cinema.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger Slams Prop 50 As “A Big Scam”

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

As California voters weigh Prop 50 ahead of the crucial upcoming midterm elections, Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher to campaign against the bill.

Following Gov. Gavin Newsom‘s ‘Election Rigging Response Act‘, sparked by recent Texas redistricting efforts the benefit Republicans, Schwarzenegger told Maher he thinks “that Prop 50 is a big scam,” noting that “there’s gerrymandering going on all over.”

“Do you know who I want to win? The people,” he said. “The people have to win. See, I’m a Republican, but I’m not a Republican hack. I’m not a political hack. I don’t serve the party, I always serve the people. The people are first.”

Governor Gavin Newsom speaks on August 14, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

Schwarzenegger continued. “We cannot undo something and rip away the power that the people in California have and give it back to the politicians. We fought that for too long. Let’s not do that. Let’s be a good example. Let the Democrats outperform the Republicans, and therefore, because of their performance, win and get the House back.”

Maher quipped, “I don’t think that’s very realistic.”

The former governor went on to champion the independent California Citizens Redistricting Commission that was formed in 2010 with support from Schwarzenegger.

Newsom previously trolled the Twins (1988) actor on social media in August when his co-star Danny DeVito contributed a $1,000 donation to the Yes on 50 campaign.

Why ‘South Park’ Suddenly Entered Its 28th Season This Week

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

This year’s episodes of South Park have brought a resurgence of the franchise. Season 27 of the beloved series is a ratings bonanza for Comedy Central, as well as a creative triumph for its showrunners, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and a delight for fans of irreverent topical satire. In fact, the animated hit’s fans have been so laser-focused on every detail of the show that they were quick to notice when Wednesday night’s episode marked the beginning of the show’s 28th season — an unannounced move that seemed to make little sense.

Wednesday night’s episode focused on several current issues, including surveillance, government encroachment on everyday life, and the annoying “6, 7” meme that has overtaken Gen Alpha. It also marked a whole new season of the show, which returned for its 27th season over the summer after a two-year hiatus to critical acclaim and the chagrin of the White House. Traditionally, South Park seasons consist of six episodes and, like most TV shows, have a long break until the next season begins. However, early in the latest run, it was widely reported that season 27 would consist of 10 new 22-minute episodes. All the better for the show’s many fans.

Ahead of Wednesday’s show, fans began to speculate as to why what was expected to be season 27’s sixth episode was being listed as season 28, episode 1. It must be a glitch, viewers assumed, or maybe a maneuver to fulfill Parker and Stone’s contractual obligations, given the retooling of their deal over the summer. It was perplexing for many to find that many of the plot threads set up in the five episodes that made up season 27 were continued as if they were the same season; in fact, nothing from the storylines — Donald Trump and Satan’s love child, Jesus’ entree into South Park Elementary as a counselor — had been resolved by episode five.

It turns out that this is a case of misreporting, a rep for the show suggested on Friday. Season 27 was never meant to be a full 10 episodes, and the showrunners had planned all along for Seasons 27 and 28 to bow at five episodes each, it seems. No announcement was made regarding the number of episodes in season 27 at the time it debuted, Comedy Central clarified to The Hollywood Reporter. This is all despite widespread reporting of a 10-episode run for the latest season. And what the rep told THR tracks: looking back at the press releases for this season, Comedy Central has consistently provided air dates for the upcoming episodes, but has never referred to them as part of a continuous season of 10 episodes.

Yet the latest season has had a perplexing schedule. Episodes 2701 and 2702 aired on the standard week-over-week schedule, but then it was announced that the team had switched to a biweekly schedule before the delayed fifth episode. That now-apparent season finale aired three weeks later, on Sept. 24. It was another three weeks before Wednesday’s surprise season 28 premiere episode.

Could there be more to this that we don’t know? Perhaps. Does it matter, as long as South Park keeps delivering pitch-perfect satire? Not really.
